Stumbled upon this place when in Newport with friends. We had a large party (8 people; 5 kids). We were seated outside and it was lovely -- very spacious and shaded. The kids were given chalkboards and buckets of chalk to keep busy (brilliant). The views were fantastic, as was the service. The sangria was very good. And my lunch -- the fried oyster sandwich - -was awesome. I'd never tried oysters and was really nervous. It was the perfect choice for a first-time oyster-eater. Perfectly seasoned and delicious. I even purchased two of the restaurants seasoning salts to take home -- unique and so good. Great experience, overall.

We went there today to have a drink. When we were greeted we were told they had just opened and had a limited menu and were opening officially on Friday. She gave us menus and she told us we could sit at one of the high tops across from the bar. And that's where we sat for over 10 minutes. No one acknowledged us or came over to take our order. We just sat waiting. Then we saw another group doing the same thing. One of them went up to the bar and had to order the drinks directly from the bartender. I guess we were supposed to assume upon entering that it was a self serve? There were tons of waiters all running around but I guess they don't wait on tables? It was very odd. We just got up and walked out. The girl at the front told us to " have a good night". Perhaps she could've said .."Did you guys not get waited on, I'm so sorry! Let me get someone for you" probably would've been a better response to two people walking out of a brand new restaurant!

My husband and I live in Newport and go out frequently. Let me preface this review by saying we are happy to pay quite a bit for a good meal, so when I say they are not worth the money, I mean it! We decided to visit Salt Water last night, which just opened in June, and we were extremely disappointed! The raw bar was outrageously priced, which I can't understand when they are located near multiple other, better restaurants with raw bar available. I mean $4 for an oyster?! The food was mediocre at best. Also, we specifically asked the waitress to allow us time to finish our apps before bringing dinner and they came out with our entree just a few minutes after we started eating! We felt like we were being rushed or at a fast food restaurant. The gazpacho was too watery and pureed, and tasted like tomato juice, the halibut tasted like something you would get at a chain restaurant. What a shame this place is, considering the location and the fact that they have music. All in all, not a good experience. We will stick to the Cooke House from now on!

so- we tried but its a no go. the staff is not trained at all..waitress tells us the specials- highly recommends the scallops- then when she comes to take our order tells us no scallops tonight-- even though i think there were 2- 3 dishes on the menu- not cool especially in Newport. Salad served without any dressing on it.( come on people- that is elementary) We ordered one dish without the fish-basically for a vegan- so just some rice and veggies and were charged the 27.00 full price for the halibut dish with no halibut-- not right at all. We saw fresh rolls being brought to everyone elses table- but not ours- asked the waitress and she wasnt really sure about that???? food was very mediocre and prices are high for what you get.. slow service. and the idea of the salt blocks being served again and again with food on them is kind of icky- since they dont really go in the dishwasher.. we wont be back.

Went there when it was not that bust and got a table right away. Took 10 min to get water and I had to go and ask for it. 25 min to get the drinks and they were wrong anyway. My wife ordered a salad and it came out wrong. After an hour we finally got the right salad and the tomatoes still has the stickers on them. At this point we just got up and left. The manager never tried to make an effort to help us out. Do not go here! Also not kid friendly.

This is my first and probably only review, but my experience here was so poor that I felt it needed to be documented. Saturday evening we visited for dinner and were one of the few patrons not to get up and walk out. The restaurant could not get food out of the kitchen. We waited for HOURS for soup and raw seafood as appetizers. The scallop crudo was disgusting and the soup, once finally delivered, was cold. Entrees were no better and after the 3 hour wait to receive them (you read that correctly) most of our party could not more than a few forkfuls because they were so poor. The experience was so poor it made me believe we were on some sort of reality television show. The night somehow got even worse when we decided to stay at the bar and meet another couple who was in the area. The bartender that night was one of the worst professionals I have ever witnessed in the service industry. He refused to serve water to customers because he did not have the time to get it for them, he refused to allow patrons to open a tab, and refused to add any drinks to a tab if you had opened one earlier in the night. At one point he dropped a bottle that broke on the floor and then proceeded to kick the bottle against the wall causing it to shatter even more. And this was in front of customers! Newport has many great restaurants and bars. DO NOT VISIT THIS ONE!

You can't beat the location of this place and they are extremely dog friendly. I would have liked to give this place more stars but the service was slow despite the restaurant/bar being relatively empty. We only had drinks (wine/beer) and it took about 20 min to get them. We also had to leave cash on the table because our server was MIA. We will probably try this place again since I believe they just reopened and are smoothing out their process.

The food was good and the atmosphere is great! We had a live band singing when we were there. The waitress was really nice and upbeat. The oysters were not that fresh . Overall I like this place!

My boyfriend and I stopped at Salt water for a Bloody Mary to kill time before our parasail cruise. The bloody Mary's were really good and the staff was very kind and prompt. My boyfriend had a few seasonal beers as well, I would say they had about five on tap. The bartender also gave us complimentary fresh hot biscuit that were the bomb and there was some good live music playing as well.

Solid menu options varying from great seafood, sandwiches and the personally recommended raw bar, tomato/motz app and Cowboy Ribeye. Service was not rushed nor too complacent. Good selection of local brews. My company enjoyed a Riesling sangria that she loved(not too sweet and crisp). We over did it because the Ribeye could have easily been shared amongst 2-3 with an app. Good venue if you are outside. Hidden away from crowd noise in the busy wharf area and offering tasteful live music. Prices are reasonable but raw bar options are a little pricey for the selection.

It's hard to sometimes write a review on a restaurant in a tourist town. We recently spent a week in Newport and I have been coming to Newport for over 20 years with my family. As usual, most restaurants had a huge wait and almost every restaurant on the warf did not seem to want to take a party of 5. So, we decided to try Saltwater, which appeared to be a new restaurant. My first impression was actually from a couple of nights earlier, when we stopped their for a drink, the places seemed pretty full and most of the tables were full, so we figured...why not? We made reservations and were quickly sat down but not as quickly taken care of. It felt like our waitress was the only waitress in the restaurant and the back-up was the host. Yeah, they looked really busy, but it was a long wait for drinks, bread, a welcome to Saltwater. After we placed our order for drinks, we had to wait about 10 minutes, which made our wait to get our drinks about 30 minutes. When my dad's drink came, it was warm...not room temperature, but warm and it was a draft. Which made me think that the drink sat for a while, which actually was true because all the drinks tasted watered down when we got them. As for the food....well, my brother loved the oysters, he said "they were the best he had all week" which was the highlight of the meal but just for one person. The caesar salad was just a couple of pieces of un-cut romaine, 2 croutons and a little to no dressing. The lobster rolls were mostly celery and the fries...well, try not frying them in duck oil because they were terrible, even after we got a fresh order (which came out cold). Again, I feel bad giving this negative review, because the staff did seem to try really hard but the overall managment seemed to set-up the staff to fail from the start.

Wow, what a surprise. On our first visit we had a party of 7 and because it was a Wednesday night I (incorrectly) figured we could get into any of the usual Bowen's restaurants one celebrates birthdays. Unfortunately there were long waits everywhere so we were thrilled to stumble upon Saltwater and were happily surprised by our experience. The view is just beautiful (quintessential Newport), the atmosphere is relaxing and don't worry if you forget a sweater, as after the sun goes down their smart heat lamps keep you cozy if needed. Max was our first visit server and we agreed he's the best server in Newport. Detail-oriented and we never had to look for him because he always appeared out of nowhere at just the right moment. Top marks. Our 2nd visit we had Claire, who was also an all-star with personality galore. We also appreciated the manager, Katherine (sp?), checking in on each table both visits. She was fantastic. We all loved the food (really varied selections) and that you felt equally welcome whether you're there for a full meal or simply a bowl of chowder or gazpacho. After reading the below reviews I'm not sure if we got lucky (twice?!) but had a less than normal wait for the food despite the tables being full. Can't wait to return and really want to try their breakfast.

I'll start out by saying Jessica, our kind, attentive, waitress is the reason for three stars at Saltwater (as she was a 5 star aspect of our experience). The food was more like 2 stars, except for the clam chowder, which was easily one of the best clam chowders I have ever tasted. Between the calamari, burger, lobster roll, and other items ordered, none were very memorable, though I would definitely come back for a drink or two, the clam chowder, beautiful atmosphere, and welcoming live music.

I understand that this place just opened, however it was an absolute mess. To start, a manager should be on the floor at all times. The kitchen was also extraordinarily slow and when our party got there, only 3 other tables were seated. We waited 50 minutes for our food and the table next to us got up and left because their food was taking so long. I am not sure who the chef is however he needs to figure out how to get the food fired and out the door MUCH more efficiently. Our food was also extremely dry and my friends over easy egg was flapping like rubber when she held it in the air. It feels as if no one who works here has ever been in the food service industry and they need to hire more experienced staff. The service was also so slow everyone around us was disgruntled and they even cut our bill in half. There was no option to give it zero stars so we had to give it one. I almost felt guilty and socially irresponsible to not warn the party of 17 that walked in as we were leaving. I legitimately went out of my way to create this Yelp account on my iPhone at the table to attempt to give fair warning to all patrons of Newport to steer clear until they have figured out how a restaurant should be run. All in all we were wildly underwhelmed with this experience. It's a beautiful spot and we hope they get their sh*t together.

Let's call it 3.5 (will we ever have that option?). Nice looking outdoor seating, decent entertainment, comfortable bar area. Don't sit behind the beer taps tho because none of the bartenders see you without a lot of effort. It wasn't a great start but I was sitting next to folks who reminded me of my parents so that made me happy. The drink sounded great (kind of a fancy wine spritzer) and it was a large size but not overly tasty. On the other hand, the fried oyster BLT was quite good. The bread is needlessly massive but the filling was great and about the right size once you combine it all onto a half a sandwich. Homemade chips were decent, service improved. I think they may have gotten their act a bit more together from the earlier reviews and I wasn't inside except to use the restroom, so may be worth another shot for those who had a bad experience previously.

So as Casey said below, I was part of the group of 17 and wish she told me how her experience was prior of us sitting lol the restaurant is really nice however we did wait an hour for our food to be prepared. I understand that they want to be fancy and serve their food on blacks of pink salt, but they should KNOW that not ALL dishes should be served that way, for example, I ordered the European breakfast, which is prosciutto, mozzarella and an egg... Whyyyyy would you put that on top of a black of pink salt... My prosciutto is salty enough, that block made it even saltier. I couldn't even eat it. The pancakes I would have to say are really good, the sea salt caramel with bacon bits I recommend. This restaurant just opened from what I have heard, so definitely don't expect the best of the best and hopefully they change it up and become better.

Great location right on the water in Newport. Pricey but right on par with the rest of the restaurants in the area. Loved the diverse cocktail menu and was definitely impressed by the wine list. I got a lobster roll and the kitchen accommodated me by making a fresh batch with no celery upon request. They didn't skimp on lobster meat at all and the bun was buttered and had sea salt on it which was delicious. I would definitely return!

Great chef but terrible management. After waiting almost 2hrs food was tasty but cold. Tank next to us left after waiting very Long for cold burgers. This was my 3rd visit since we were staying on our boat at the marina. Not going back as 3 for 3 visits were long and disappointing.

Save your time and money! Service and food was horrible and management doesn't seem to care or have a clue!

We arrived after checking in and heard that it had just had a "soft" opening. The menu was a little limited but the pancakes with salted caramel, flatbreads and saltwater parfait were all excellent. The wait staff, particularly Beth Casey, were warm, welcoming and engaging. On our last day, they changed to a new, more extensive menu and the food took forever for everyone - but was still very good when it did arrive. I think they'll do well once they get the kitchen straightened out.

Beautiful spot on the harbor in Newport. I had no idea it was a brand new restaurant because it was such a great experience. I ordered a lobster roll that came with house made chips--delicious! The buttered bun was salted with Salt Water's signature salt blend which gave the hearty lobster roll a little something extra. The chips were the perfect accompaniment but they will substitute fries if you're not into chips. Details like the mason jar water glasses, signature salt mix, and succulents on each table gave the restaurant a homey feel. The sangria bar was a nice touch and they all looked delicious. I can't wait to go back!

The food was delicious and fresh. Our waiter Cathal was friendly and helpful. The ambience was lovely and relaxing. We purchased several bottles of their proprietary blend of salt, lavendar and lemon blossoms. One for ourselves and two as gifts.

A restaurant/bar right on the water like this place has potential to be a great place for a drink or meal. We sit down hoping to have brunch and a waiter tells us a waiter wouldn't be able to get to us for 15 minutes. There were many, many open tables available. We left and ate at a nearby restaurant.

Unfortunately I had a truly dismal experience here. While the physical restaurant was nice that is the extent of my positive comments related to salt water. When we arrived no one greeted us so we opted to sit at the bar since we knew we only had an hour. Service was a mess. All the food was delivered cold. The lobster bisque was inedible! It was dark brown, beefy and salty. I ordered a sandwich that was never fired and thus never eaten. The Cobb salad arrived with bacon bits and peeled tomatoes and exceedingly tiny for an entree sized and priced salad. The wait staff was not helpful when asked for salad dressing three times. The management was unsympathetic when addressed. Please save your time and money until this place figures itself out.

After changing hands from Pier 49, Salt Water is losing customers daily. We have tried to eat here on several occasions and each time, with a dozen open tables, they turned us away saying they were waiting on private parties. Went over to Benjamin's and continued the conversation with other customers who have had the same experience. Salt Water you have no sense of customer loyalty. We loved the Pier, but Salt Water has left a bitter taste in my mouth!!

Go to the lobster bar just 100 yards down. Better view and an exponentially more attentive wait staff. Prepare to be ignored if you come here - especially if Erica is your bartender.
