Excellent value for money. Beautiful house, great location and yummy breakfast. Mark and his staff are great hosts, and the big backyard deck is a great place to relax. No TVs, but if you want that, go stay in a hotel. Make sure to walk around the Kay/Catherine St neighborhood - the homes are beautiful.

We were in town the weekend of 6/12/15 for a wedding. I am soo happy that I found this Inn on trip advisor, it was a perfect fit for my husband and I. We stayed in 'The Snuggery' room and the name describes it, it was cozy small. But it worked with the way they have things laid out. There is a spiral staircase to the 2nd floor in the room and there is a nice size area with the sink and a big mirror to get ready and the bathroom/shower behind a pocket door. I think if you are staying longer than 2 nights maybe choose one of their larger rooms. But this room was just what we needed as we were only in it to sleep. Also, Mark who runs the place was GREAT. My husband's pants split 30min before we had to be at the wedding and Mark went to his house and brought us back needle and thread. Life saver! The breakfast is a must, get yourself out of bed no matter how bad the hangover may be. The inn is also in a perfect location. We were able to walk downtown in less than 10min. We drove to the beach in about 5min. Everything is just where it needs to be. Excellent service. Beautiful historic home. Bike rentals. Relaxing outdoor space. Delicious breakfast included. Clean rooms. Not much more you can ask for. On our next trip to Newport we'll be staying here again!

Originally booked our Sunday-Wednesday stay several months back for a mini honeymoon. The reveiws of the breakfast and steady high acclaim is what made me choose Marshall Slocum over others. I cannot agree more that this was the right choice and this should probably be 4.5 stars. So let's get the few minor issues if you can call them that out first. The wifi is slower than the 3G connection my phone was getting so netflix played but looked grainy. The noise carrys throughout when folks are in the halls (see pro's later tho) especially if your near the stairs and newport water smells like chemicals so bring water. The rooms- We stayed in the snuggery with the staircase and loved the concept of a bathroom upstairs. Something fun for a few days but I would probably not suggest doing it for more than that. This also left limited space downstairs. I would recommend looking at all the rooms and selecting something with proper storage for your things depending on the length of your stay. Since we just came from our wedding we had a lot of stuff so it was cramped til we sorted out our luggage. There are a lot of room options so theres something for everyone, besides how much time are you in the room anyways! your doing vacation all wrong if your there too much! The inn is decorated very well in the common spaces and makes you feel at home and not afarid to use them. You can relax in the dining room and perhaps eat some leftover cake or take your tea or coffee outside on the balcony. Chef and Host Mark Spring is excellent and deserves five stars. He can whip up a great selection of delicious food, book your sailing adventure or suggest a place to eat or lay in the sun. All while he stains the deck! Mark is basically the human Yelp of Newport. The Inn is also spotless and housekeeping comes through daily to make the beds and swap out towels. Walking to town is also easy once you pick the right road since everything is very accessible from kay st. If its too far for you then take one of the bikes but its simple enough and bellvue is right down the road as well where the tennis hall of fame is and just a little more is the mansions. Overall, A great stay in Newport and can't wait to return again!

We couldn't have asked for more from a weekend away, from the friendly service, quality food, a clean and quiet room, and easy access to everything in and outside of town. Hard to detail any one facet - everything just fit together so very well. Also, we stayed in The Cottage room, which is a quaint and quiet option I recommend you also choose.

The Snuggery Room has a spiral staircase. Just saying. In a Newport awash with B&Bs, colonial inns and romantic hideaways, Marshall Slocum will give you pause when leaving to explore that Cliff Walk. Ample parking in a serene backyard setting, set against a rear patio, partially shaded and entirely awaiting a supremely crafted breakfast. Coffee and tea out 24/7, pastries served in the afternoon and bikes available to rent. Lemon poppy cake, get in my belly. Check in is a breeze, and our room - the aforementioned Snuggery - was indeed snug, spotless, stocked with fresh linens and stacked with a gaggle of sites to see in the area. All bulbs worked. The bed? So comfortable, although Kara claimed a dip in the middle. Up the corkscrew, a private bathroom with ample water pressure made me actually want to take a shower. Cavemen don't want showers! Did I mention the breakfast? Pictures below - my eggs were perfectly cooked, and the fruit melange is a piece of art. Instagram that shizz, son; you know you want to. Prices are jaw-dropping considering what you pay at the larger spots down the road, and everything worth seeing is still only a short hop away. Yelp app bonus: a free half-day bike rental for two, just for checking in! Arguably one of the finer surprises, so much so one of the staffers didn't know about it. If you go here, stay here. Grand for a night or two; any more than that and you'll probably want to move in.

My boyfriend and I traveled to Newport for a relaxing weekend getaway. We stayed in the Marshall Slocum inn for two nights and we absolutely loved it. We were welcomed by friendly staff that gave us helpful information and were easy to talk to. We stayed in the snuggery room and absolutely loved it. There is a spiral staircase in the room which leads to an updated bathroom. We walked around the other rooms and were glad to have picked this unique room. The breakfast was delicious. There is a reasonably sized sitting porch where you can enjoy your breakfast, read a book, and soak up the sun. The entire inn is kept very tidy and is decorated with lovely "inn like" items. They have a small shared refrigerator in the main room where you can store items if you need to. We were also pleasantly surprised to find an iPad for use in our room. Free wifi is provided. Overall, we recommended this well kept establishment for a weekend getaway. You will not be disappointed!

Clean rooms! No "smells". An owner who takes pride in their business. I rarely give out 5 stars and this place is justified to warrant it. They go above and beyond to make sure your stay is great! No false pretenses here. True authentic warm welcomes to everyone. Thank you for a wonderful reprieve from a very hard time in my life. I sincerely appreciate it.

After reading great reviews for this B&B, we decided to give this a shot on one of our many trips to Newport. We frequently stay at B&Bs in Newport and the larger New England area, therefore have a very good idea of what is good, and what leaves much to be desired. While we really want to give a good rating for this inn given the friendly inn keeper, but we cannot ignore the shortcomings in service, accommodation and location. 1. First, we were misled at the time of booking (we used booking.com ) regarding the type of room we were booking (Captain's quarter's, The Snuggery etc.); the one we got was not even in the photos (The Postcard). We were shocked at what we actually got when we got to the inn. Misleading guests reflects very poorly on the establishment. Actually, for lack of transparency, I would not even rank this place. If you ever do willingly choose to stay in The Postcard room, please know that it is on the top floor and there is just one tiny window that overlooks the street. The room is perhaps the smallest they have. The bathroom while tiny is modern, but the water pressure is unreliable. The mattress is soft and thick (the best bit about the room). The heating is modern and reliable, and can be adjusted as needed. 2. The housekeeping service was very disappointing for an inn that prides in fantastic service. Our used dirty coffee mugs were left in the room after housekeeping had left & never removed until we took them downstairs ourselves. 3. Even though we stayed 2 nights, our toiletries were never replenished & we had to buy our own for the second day. These are red flags in very basic hospitality and service. 4. The breakfast provided while excellent in itself (Mark is a great chef) was just 1 entree with juice, coffee and tea, unlike any other inn we have stayed at & hence the below average rating. Bed & breakfasts are known for hearty, delicious, large breakfasts, so this was disappointing. 5. Additionally, there is no afternoon snack/cookies/pastries or tea offered which once again is unusual in comparison to other inns in the area, but we did not take this into consideration during ranking (being lenient). 6. The yard furniture in the back porch was in horrid condition, which cannot be excused- it just needed paint to be presentable (like ones put out in the front porch). While not much can be done about the brown grass at this time of year, certainly one can run a coat or two of paint on the yard furniture to make it somewhat presentable. This indicates to us apathy on the part of the inn keepers and less than complete attention to basic presentation of the accommodation. 7. The location is not very convenient for a stroll into the wharf/downtown area, at least not at this time of year. One needs a car, which in comparison to other inns in the area, is a disadvantage, since they are a 5-minute walk or less, from downtown. People need to know this and other guests have also mentioned this point on other travel websites about this lodging. We agree with them. 8. Like other inns in the area though, they do provide free parking at the back of the lodging, which is good. We hope our review will help both future guests in making an informed decision, and the inn keepers in improving the services.

Great location off the beaten path, but not too far from shopping and the best Newport beaches!! Summer isn't the only times to go... Special nights makes a special weekend!! Happy holidays!

Adorable quaint charming inn on a lovely residential street in Newport. Sferra blanket, beautiful antique farmhouse furnishings. Bright airy space not cluttered or stodgy or dark like other inns. Easy walk to mansions, cliff walk, upscale shops, tennis hall of fame etc etc. owned by a young chef and his wife both hotelier vets they do it right. Fresh baked salted caramel chocolate chip cookies were waiting for us when we checked in. A made to order gourmet breakfast -with about 8 options - was a luxurious thing to wake up to. Our choices were the omelette with Caramelized onions, Portuguese sausage and cheddar- Mark the chef/owner gladly obliged when I asked for egg whites (at many b&b's they would scoff at such a high maintenance request) my fiancé went for the blueberry stuffed French toast. The filling was perfectly sweet but not too sweet and clearly home made. There is a great deck where breakfast is served with brand new furniture and awning and both high and low top tables. Atmosphere is friendly but highly intuitive and not invasive. We will recommend to any friends visiting the area and will be back again.

Stayed in the captain's quarters. This place is well worth the high prices, the highlight being the personalized breakfasts prepared to order every morning. Kept clean and classy all the way. Downside would be distance to the downtown area.

Stayed here in the room called "the Snuggery" with the boyfriend a couple weekends ago. It's really an amazing room - the first floor is just the bed, nightstands and closet, while the second floor which is accessed in the room by a winding staircase is the bathroom. So cool! The innkeepers were very nice. Very professional. Breakfast was great. There was blueberry bread pudding one morning that was heavenly. I've read reviews on other sites where people complain there was nothing for breakfast except a little fruit. I didn't find that to be the case at all. My theory is they simply slept in so late that by the time they moseyed down, there was simply nothing left. The inn is also located right in the middle of everything. The main streets are a short walk away. The Viking Hotel was just down the street. All in all an extremely good value. We've decided this is the place to stay when in Newport!

Great B&B for an INCREDIBLE value The perfect place for a couple's weekend (or mid-week stay like us) The rooms were large, the bathroom was a girl's dream (your own personal make-up desk!), very little room to room noise, and great decor! There is no TV and that's what we loved about it! The atmosphere and service were incredible, it is very clear they have thought of every little detail and really care about the service they provide. The B&B is very close to all the happenings of Newport - Thames st/the wharfs (walking distance and I'm no walker) but tucked away on a quiet street, which is PERFECT. All in all I would recommend this B&B and if we're ever in Newport, we will certainly be staying here again!
