Beautiful location- a wraparound, enclosed porch with a view of a grass tennis court rarely used. The maitre d' was a tad snooty- a turnoff for someone in his position, good thing I was in a pleasant mood. The servers, try as they might, just had too many people on their hands. They were running back and forth, and requests for refills more often than once were forgotten. To our server's credit, she checked twice to see if our food was okay. Of course, I ordered their claim to fame New England clam chowder and crab cakes. The chowder was not hot when served! Disgraceful, in my opinion. But the taste is what you'd expect from comfort food- capable of giving you a warm, fuzzy feeling... For the first 5 or so sips. After, the cream-based taste settles heavily on your tongue, and heavier still in your stomach. The crab cakes were sickly in their oiliness, and dry. Squeezing lemon on it helped, but I regretted ordering it. I wouldn't say I left feeling good or particularly satisfied after. Would I come back? No.

Food was OK, service was horrible. The hostess looked annoyed to have to seat us, we waited 10+ minutes for water (let alone menus) on a hot day. Tables around us were served way before us despite arriving after us. The place was not busy, but the staff was clearly disorganized and/or disinterested. The rug was filthy, just covered in food that no one bothered to clean up. For a $60 lunch for two, it wasn't worth it.

We ate here for a wedding brunch, the buffet had delicious food to choose from, bagels, capers, 3 kinds of eggs, toast, muffins, juices, coffee, yogurts, cereal, sausages, ham, bacon. Ambiance is lovely, parking is across the street and free on Sunday's!

I was a little skeptical about this place but let's just say it was pleasantly surprised. I order a mimosas and eggs casino. It was two eggs over crab cakes with a side of fruit. It was delightful with plenty of flavor. Don't over look this place it was amazing!

We've been here several times; both on and off-season (which often makes a big difference). The food is good but not overwhelming in creativity or taste, is fairly priced especially given its location but the ambiance is poor and dated and service was adequate. We did not leave after this most recent visit claiming we couldn't wait to go back for another meal. Lobster bisque is delicious as is the NE clam chowder, a must for any restaurant in NPT. Their specials often take advantage of local offerings and their menu staples are decent even though the menu is dated "Summer - 2010" on the cover. Food is fair, pricing is fair but the atmosphere is sorely lacking (let's just say the 70's want their leather seated white metal chairs and pink table cloths back) even though it has so much potential. Good, but not great.

My family and I came here for lunch on our way to check out a historic Newport mansion. We arrived at about 1:30pm. There were only about 10 tables being occupied at that time. We had a baby in a stroller with us and were put at the back of the room that faces the International Tennis Fall of Fame Court. The view was lovely and the decor was ok. It was very old looking. It could use some updating, even if trying to keep in line with the historic character they are looking for. It took about 30 minutes for our waitress to come take our food and drink order. We ordered the Lobster Roll, Chili and Chips, a gourmet salad with chicken, a cup of lobster bisque. In addition, as it was restaurant week, I ordered the 3 course pre-fixe menu with a cup of New England Clam Chowder, Clam Cakes and Chocolate Lava cake. All the food was delicious. My major complaint was the lack of attentiveness by the waitress. We were there for almost 2 hours (because the service was so slow) and had my drink refilled once and the time between interactions was excessively long. With hardly any customers at that time, there was no need for this.

This place is rather pricy and the wait staff are miserable. Sorry to be inconveniencing you with my food orders and money. I'll bring it else where next time. The view is beautiful, the outside seating is beautiful but the decor is sooooo out-dated. The food, again, rather pricy, but delicious.

Went to this place after seeing reviews. Was very excited to come here and waiting all weekend for this place. Went here to get the lobster roll as everyone was raving about it. It was not good. The chowder was ok but deff not work damn near $7. The lobster roll was $18 and it was on a small roll deff not worth it at all. The waitress never came to check up on us. Only to get the bill and the place was raggedy. Just didn't like it and I took a big loss coming here. It was my fault for believing my gut and next time I'll just go to Wendy's

Came here by myself while I was in Newport, RI for a wedding. It was raining and this was the closest place in town I could pop in for a quick lobster lunch. Since I was by myself, the hostess seated me in the Casino Room, the bar side rather than the restaurant side facing the tennis court. The decor is very New England and the waitresses seemed like local who know the menu well and can make great recommendations. Despite it seeming like a tourist trap, the other people dining near me all seemed like locals who knew the wait staff well. I ordered the Lobster Salad Plate and Rhode Island Stuffed Quahog. The savory portion of the Lobster Salad Plate was good but I thought the fruit should have been in a cup on the side of the plate rather than part of the salad. The Rhode Island Stuffed Quahog was pretty yummy. It takes about 20 minutes to prepare so be sure to order ahead of time if you want it as appetizer. The food was decent but it wasn't anything extraordinary for New England.

The Lobster Roll was AWARD WINNING and it tasted like it. While traveling the east coast, I stuffed my face with lobster rolls everywhere I went and La Forge has the best!! The ambiance is a nice warm, hunker down kinda place where you just want to relax and get lost for a bit in there. The server was sweet as pie and made the dining experience even nicer by being so helpful and friendly. After you eat, be sure to go by the Hall of Fame next door and see this beautiful tennis court!!

If you want to see old school Newporters... this is a glimpse into the past ! Good is good, ESP the lobster rolls.... the specials are always fantastic... Friday and Saturday nights they have LIVE PIANO Cabaret! If you have a good voice and have liquid courage... ask Dave Manuel at the piano if he knows a tune ... and away you go. This place is like Cheers... most are regulars... and thats the most special part about this place ! COMFORT FOOD !

We came here on a Friday night in December after a nutcracker performance. Two adults and two children. The main pluses were that it had nice festive decorations. It was very busy. In terms of food we had onion soup, cobb salad, and bangers and mash. The soup was comparable to Restaurant 99. That is to say not bad. The cobb salad in appearance was disappointing as it was made with slices of Turkey deli meat - which struck me as a bit lazy. For reasons described below it never really got eaten. The bangers in the bangers and mash were undercooked and raw inside. My husband ate them anyway because he was hungry. Service had one high which was that the server brought the kids meals out quickly. It was disappointing in that we never got water (despite requesting it and other tables around us having water), and had to chase our server around the restaurant in order to get the check. It was obvious that the kitchen and server was overwhelmed. The biggest low though was the management or in particular the management's hostility in the face of customer complaints. There was a santa claus wandering around the restaurant. waving at tables My two five year olds approached him and were told by the Santa himself to go away as he was only there for an adult tour group. They burst into tears and had to be taken (in tears) away from the restaurant, while we tried to explain that sometimes people pretent to be santa and that of course the real santa does indeed love kids. We complained to the manager about this and she was keen to emphasize that this was not her fault and not her responsibility. That was really all she was keen to emphasize. As it was due to the five year olds who were weeping outside, we had to leave the restaurant not having finished the cobb salad or our drinks (which we had of course paid for/tipped for). And no efforts were made to help us deal with the situation. In general (whatever your view is on the need for people dressed as santa to not make children cry), my view is that large tour parties are always, perhaps, going to cause difficulties for other guests. It is part of management's responsibility in accepting these large bookings to accept responsibility for the negative effects that sometimes these large tour parties bring for other guests and try and actively manage the situation.

The food was just OK: Raw oyster was too gritty-probably bad prep crab cake-mostly cake, not much lump, taste was fine Lobster bisque: quite salty Lobster roll: tiny, but I have to agree the amount of meat was not too bad, and it taste good (meaning if you just put fresh lobster meat in a bun, that's how it tastes), but just can't see why it's $19 Service was quite slow, though the place was only 10% full. surroundings: next to a historic tennis hall of fame and got charged $0.75/person for it, but the place look out-dated like a country club house 50 years back in time. Conclusion: not really worth the walk from the water, needs more reviews to show the true quality

Everyone raves about the lobster roll/salad. One word: unimpressed. Though I will attest to the clam chowder being delish! Nice to sit by a beautiful tennis court but I'd rather be watching ppl play, than staring at an empty court. Just saying...

La Forge sits inside of the Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, RI and it is a great place to grab lunch when the weather is good The outdoor tables sit right around a novelty grass tennis court which provides a nice ambiance. Overall, the food is good, the prices are reasonable (for Newport), and the service is pretty good. La Forge is one of those places that isn't going to knock your socks off because its amazing, but it is going to deliver a good meal at a good price and that is good in my book.

I recently attended a tennis championship in the adjacent Hall of Fame, and although there were sandwiches and snacks for sale at stands within the complex, my mom and I decided we'd rather have a nice sit down meal. Instead of venturing out to God knows where for lunch and then heading back for more matches, we thought we would waste less time (and take in the lovely view of the tennis court out front) if we dined here at La Forge. When we first walked in and asked if we could sit outside by the court, the hostess told us to go see the other hostess in the back (there's more than 1 hostess?). When we asked the second hostess if we could sit outside (mind you we were just there and saw several empty tables), she seemed unhappy and begrudgingly seated us outside. After a near eternity of not being waited on, a passing server asked us if anyone had helped us yet and we said no. She went to check on who our server was and apparently our table had been overlooked. No one had been assigned to serve us. What poor organization. A very nice server finally came over, apologized for the confusion, and helped us immediately. From that point on it was smooth sailing. Our food arrived relatively quickly. We both opted for the famous (and fairly expensive) lobster roll that Giada had enjoyed on her visit here on Giada's Weekend Getaways. The portion of fries seemed a little stingy, but the lobster roll was tasty. The bun had been lightly grilled in butter (I could taste that luscious and fattening touch) and the salad itself was very lobstery with a hint of nearly-brunoise celery for crunch. Nicely seasoned, we both enjoyed our lunch, although albeit after a rather annoying wait and attitude from the hostess. It's very convenient to dine here if you are at the Hall of Fame, but I certainly wouldn't seek it out otherwise. The view WAS very nice from our table outside, but if you sit inside, what's the point?

Took my parents on Veteran's Day and we had a really wonderful experience. Beverly our server, was the key to it all. Accommodating, courteous and spirited, she made our lunch really pleasant. My elderly parents have a hard time going out but she made them feel welcome, which in turn helped me relax. Oh yeah, and how 'bout those fried clams??!! Righteous!

We stopped by for a late lunch and were seated in back by the grass tennis court. We were promptly given menus and drink orders taken. I had a chicken BLT. Two others had salads and one had the Shepard pie. The food arrived shortly after. The salads looked good. My sandwich was as described on the menu. The side order of cole slaw was large enough for two. I would definitely return.

We've now been to this place twice and both times tried different dishes and have been very pleased. Bangers & Mash were excellent and plenty for lunch the next day. Fish & Chips were a huge order and fresh. Don't forget to try Not My Father's Root Beer Beer. Devine. Ask to sit on or near the patio and enjoy what Newport offers. The Newport Tennis Hall of Fame.

I personally enjoyed the food here. The interior is kind of depressing looking, like it has seen better days for sure. The service was great - my whole family was served quickly and the waiter was friendly. The food itself was pretty delicious. I had seafood fantasia and no complaints! It hit the spot and was delicious. Unfortunately, my mother got food poisoning. We went out to eat back in June, and she is STILL getting over it... after weeks and weeks lost and spent at the doctors, our entire summer has been shot. :( This review would have been much higher but I just can't see myself ever going back after watching my mother get so sick.

The atmosphere and service rate this restaurant 5 stars. Proximity to Bellevue Boulevard and the Mansions is a huge factor. Free 2 hour street parking nearby is great, too, but you have to get there before Noon. The 1880 Casino, the first by that famous architectural trio McKim, Mead and White, is a spectacular setting in which to have lunch. Get a table on the rear porch or courtside. My folks and I also were clean platers today at lunch, although the lobster on the cold lobster roll was a little dry in an of itself. Otherwise, 5 stars! The meatloaf sandwich was devoured by my stepdad. My mom loved the grilled tuna and cheese. All of the sides were great, too, including the fresh fruit. And the prices were very reasonable, especially for Newport. Will repeat!

Disclaimer: over the years I have known many people who worked here both in the back and the front of the house, a long time ago, my mother waited tables here. La Forge has a prime address and is an historic landmark. One might think that it is purely a tourist place but, do locals that eat there? Yes and no, it's popular with "new Newporters and the Navy crowd, I think the townie following has slipped a bit. When I worked construction, this was our first stop for egg samiches and coffee milks, that's milk with coffee syrup, a RI delicacy. This past Saturday night I had to have baked stuffed lobster, "had to have" as in it was a moral imperative. My mortal soul would be in peril if I did not partake in this summer ritual meal. As I ran through the mental check-off of list the usual suspects for obtaining a well prepared stuffed Homarus Americanus, I decided to head to LFC, partly for nostalgic reasons, party because the restaurant is a value in an over priced market, and mostly because at 7 pm, on a Saturday night in August many of the obvious places would be a long wait. I had thought about getting the clams casino as well, but that would be slightly redundant choice, instead I opted for the steamers cooked in white wine and herbs. The clams were prepared much as I expected, in Newport restaurants they also offer the dish Portuguese style, that includes chourico, onions and green peppers. Without the suasage the dish is lighter, that was a better compliment to the lobster. The broth was tasty enough to eat as a soup, or use for dipping the steamers, I also made use of the drawn butter they were served with. I was a special still a good value at $12.00. The lobster was stuffed with sea scallops, shrimp and more lobster. The breading was a bit heavier than I like, and the "select" (1-1/2 lb) sized crustacean was slightly over cooked. When they over bake the lobster it makes it harder to get at the claw meat, it sticks to the shell. That isn't such a big deal since most of what you are eating is easy picking, by far baked stuffed is the easy access way to eat lobster. Bottom line: $29.95, a decent baked stuffed lobster. We also ordered the pan fried filet of sole. With this dish the heavy breading over powered the delicate fish. It was also oily, not a tragedy, but it could have been better for $15.00. Kids meals here are not on a printed menu and $6-7 they have chicken fingers, which come with steak fries that are tasty. La Forge has 3 dining rooms, a typical bistro, a pub, and more traditional dinning room. They also have outdoor seating, which is good for people watching and car watching. There are some nice machines in Newport, seeing a Bentley or a Maserati in Newport on Bellevue Ave, go figure. There was a piano player, and while he wasn't Neil Diamond, a good thing that, his shtick was campy enough to get $5 from me. A martini is $8.50 here and they have reasonable beer choices, wine choices are not that choice. Two more of the sour apple martinis and I might gone into my Fenway mode "Ohhh, sweeeeeet Caroline..." thank goodness that didn't happen. Summary: Service is variable, luck of the draw on the server you get really. It's a solid lunch, dinner alternative, year-round in the City by the Sea.

Enjoyed a lobster sandwich just like Giada right next to the pristine grass court. Beautiful location and very tasty lobster roll but its very expensive. Service was quick waitress was kind enough to take a picture of us when we requested even on a busy Sunday.

After moving my daughter into Salve Regina University, the family decided to head down Bellevue Ave to seek a place to have lunch. We were first greeted by a young lady who asked if we would like to sit inside or on the porch. I said porch sounds nice as it was a beautiful day. We were then told to proceed to the back of the restaurant. When we got there, an older rather frazzled appearing woman with wild dark hair, not even looking up from the seating chart, asked us if we wanted outside or porch seating. I made the mistake of stating outside sounds nice, only to be rudely told well we have a table of nine ahead of you and the woman then proceeded to yell at a couple of waitresses. I then said the porch is fine ... She walked away and we didn't know whether to wait or follow her. Finally, we were seated. It took approximately 10 minutes for a waitress to approach and take our drink orders and since it took so long, we also knew what we wanted to eat so we also ordered our food. It was another ten minutes before the drinks arrived and about another ten before the food came. Our drinks were almost empty but the waitress put our food down and hurriedly left. Only after we had finished eaten and sucked on our remaining ice cubes to add moisture to our mouths did she come over to ask if we would like more drinks. The food when it finally came out was quite good; however the treatment left a bad taste. As we left, an older gentleman behind the bar wished us well but by that time it was too little too late. With so many wonderful restaurants in the Newport area, we will not return to La Forge, which is a shame because we have four years of many weekend visits to Salve Regina.

Recommended by a friend for "the best lobster roll" she had ever had, we dined here on a Saturday late evening (after 8 pm). First, the name of the restaurant is confusing as there are 3 names on the awnings at the front: Crowley's Pub, La Forge and The Porch. The restaurant was very quiet and we opted to sit outside overlooking the tennis court. As we were led through the restaurant to the court area, we couldn't figure out if the restaurant was an irish pub, an english tea garden or a french restaurant based on the mixed, dated decor. There was a wedding reception at the far end of the court which could be heard throughout the dining area. Our waiter was very friendly and helpful. My friend had a craving for fish and was hoping for a meaty fish like sea bass which they did not offer so settled on Sole Newport which is a fillet of sole stuffed with baby spinach & fresh native lobster meat with a spring onion & garlic cream sauce. Served with mashed potatoes & roasted asparagus. I came for the lobster roll so stuck with that decision. We were offered bread for which I accepted but my friend did not. It took a while before the roll arrived but when it did, it was piping hot and delicious. It took another 10 minutes or so for our meals to arrive. My friend thought her sole was ok, not the best she's ever had but did enjoy the mashed potatoes. I'd have to say the same for the lobster roll. Nothing special about the taste and texture of the lobster salad or the roll it was served on. Overall, our dinner was just OK and we have had better. We just had higher expectations based on it's location and our friends recommendation. Would probably not return given the other options in Newport.

Visited last night with my nephew who is in Newport at an amazing boat building school. In this very Irish bar/restaurant we were pleased to find a piano player/singer well known to all the local patrons. Delivering well; Randy Newman, Billy Joel and Elton John, Leonard Cohen. Lobster roll & lobster salads were good and freshly prepared, including a very good blue cheese dressing & warm-from-the-oven rolls. Chicken parm and chicken salad sandwiches were also appreciated. Great for all ages: we were all delighted by a wandering 18 month old as well as a couple eating at the bar that got up to dance to their favorite song. All this amid road maps and street signs from Erie and the obligatory green hats and the likes A pleasant and welcome find in Newport!

Great lunch place down the road from some of the mansions. We were looking for a simple, homey, hearty meal and came here for the French onion soup and the meatloaf sandwich. The soup was 100% on point. The meatloaf itself was excellent and came with a rich gravy with and overarching flavor of flour. Probably not the best execution of the gravy in terms of proper technique, but damn was it good. Ended up finishing it with a spoon. This place isn't anything fancy, but it's a solid four star place for being excellent and what it does.

We ate a late lunch here 6/26/15. The hamburgers were very good and the outdoor seating gave us a view of the continuing congestion on Bellevue Ave. The beer was cold and the server attentive. We were very satisfied.

While i was visiting Rhode Island for a wedding we ended up walking towards this place after wandering from the cliff walk..... Long walk This place is also connected with the tennis hall of fame. Although we did not go through the museum we did get to sit court yard! I never knew that originally tennis was played on grass i have always known it to be played on astroturf. It wasnt too busy when we went so we were allowed to sit courtside. I believe i was an extra couple bucks. And it goes towards keeping the grounds clean.. Our waiter told us that they do still play some matches on the grassy grounds which is pretty neat and very nostalgic! Aside from the great view we ate some amazing food! I had the lobster roll and it was delicious it was my first time having one. I was worried about all the mayo. But it really didnt have a lot of mayo in it. Lots of fresh lobster on a delivious roll!! If i ever eat another lobster roll it will have very high expectations. The waiter also recommended the quogue appetizer and boy was he right. I loved the way it was presented in a clam shell very appropriate and delicious. Highly recommend it!

We only came here for lunch because our friends chose it. It was below average. The server had no idea how to approach/communicate to us. The food was so bland, we needed tabasco sauce to give it taste. All four of us had a sub par lunch. How do you mess up fried chicken? Cobb salad? Time for them to move on and let somebody else give it a try.

Waited too long for service. 15 minutes and no one checked our table. Got overlooked when a large party behind us got seated. Server Made good with a free drink! Awesome lobster salad plate so fresh. Satisfying p&p Reuben. Get an outside table. Great tennis views. $$$ worth it

When I visited the East coast last month, I had a few goals in mind: 1) see family and friends; 2) eat a lobster roll. I ordered the lobster roll here and OMG it was delicious. Chunk after chunk of sweet lobster meat in a roll with a side salad, it hit the spot. Thanks La Forge!

I brought my family here on a Saturday at 6:00 pm. At 8:00 we received our meal after several other tables that were seated after us were finishing their meals. We asked our server for an explanation, in which she was apologetic, and offered a discussion with management. Management was Ugly-spirited, unapologetic, and told us we were lucky To have the table we got. Food was mediocre at best.

I was in Newport for a few nights and this was the best meal by far. I wish I had skipped the White Horse Tavern my last night and gone back to La Forge. They have a more upscale side to the restaurant and a more pub like side (we sat in the more upscale side). There was good live music which was a nice touch. My parents, husband, and I split some appetizers and entrees - calamari, stuffies, clam strips, lobster roll, and scallops in a blood orange-cilantro sauce. The calamari was perfect and the banana peppers were a nice touch and I enjoyed the spicy red pepper sauce. The lobster roll was tasty but what really blew me away was the scallop special - the sauce was divine and it was a good amount of scallops. The spinach was also tasty. I liked that they had a cocktail menu which is something I appreciate when I want to try something new - the UV cake vodka and coke was like dessert in a glass. The server was friendly as well. I am definitely impressed with this place. And it's worth noting why we noticed this restaurant - we were walking down Bellevue, exhausted after the Cliff Walk, and our dogs noticed the big bowl of water beside their patio. They were happy to find water and we looked over their menu which was enticing. The dog treats were a nice touch as well. Good pick doggies.

It didn't start out well at all. We were seated by one person, and then another came and chastised us for not reporting to the front desk to be seated. Then my wife's wine came with a fresh lipstick mark already on the glass... It got better from there though. Our waitress was very friendly and made sure the glass was replaced immediately. The food was delicious and filling.

While on a quest for lobster rolls but not quite willing to check out the seafood fest occurring in a different part of Newport, we stumbled upon a sign outside LaForge Casino Restaurant which hawked their version of the lobster roll. So in what seemed like serendipity, we wandered inside. La Forge has a couple of different compartments: some basic tables in the front, a small bar section and a number of seats both inside and in an enclosed patio. The seats near the patio have the best views as these look upon the grounds of the Tennis Hall of Fame. If they're playing on the center grass court, you could easily sit and watch a match. While eating lobster rolls, of course. Although distracted by the idea of lobster rolls, I went for the potato skin appetizers first. These are almost a meal in themselves. A single appetizer comes as four servings (appears to be two potatoes split in half) and are topped by cheese, bacon and onion. Greasy, decadent and almost perfect. I was pretty much ready to call it a meal after this, but realized I'd also ordered the chicken cordon bleu with greens as a main course. Of course, this was an even larger serving but was very well done. The chicken was cooked to perfection and the potatoes were perfect. These were the mashed potatoes with the skins mixed in and salted perfect (not too much). As a random sit-down meal, this is a pretty good choice and there's great views across at the Hall of Fame. Now just have to make it back to actually try the lobster rolls......

I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by this place. I have walked by the entrance many times but never went in. This past Sunday I thought I would venture in and try it out and I am glad that I did. Once we walked in we were promptly greeted by a host. When we indicated that we wanted to sit outside by the tennis court, we were told to go to the send host further down. I suppose they need to do this as the layout is not traditional. The restaurant is longer from front to back. So, we had to make our way through the first series of dining rooms to the back area where we were greeted by the second hostess who promptly seated us outside. On a side note: this place is MUCH larger than it looks from the outside. Up front, there were two dining rooms and a bar. In the rear, there was another bar, an inside dining room that looked good for groups or parties, another inside dining room in an enclosed porch (with many windows) and the outside seating by the tennis court. Here is where it gets good. We ordered the lobster rolls. They were on the expensive side at $18.95 each, but it was the best lobster roll I have ever had. It was literally stuffed and overflowing with lobster. So much so, I had to eat most of it with a fork. Also, it wasn't swimming with mayo which is another plus. As another yelper mentioned, the serving of fries wasn't overwhelming, but I found them to be just right. Also, the seating outside by the tennis court was great. A must try for lunch and we will be back to try it out for dinner.

Yummy lunch - I usually get the steak sandwich and a bunch of oysters. If you visit the the Tennis Hall of Fame, go there for lunch. My mom (does not live in New England) eats a lot of lobster rolls when she comes to visit and she really likes La Forge's lobster roll. Nice salads, too. Sit outside.
