To me, this was the best place we ate at in Newport. The food is excellent, the service is attentive and friendly, and the ambiance is rustic and romantic. We came here in the middle of a giant snow snow storm since we were staying in the hotel, so it was pretty dead since the streets were all shut down, but the quality of the service and the food did not suffer. Grand chowder - this is exactly what you want when you come to Newport. Rich and creamy with huge chunks of lobster, scallops, and shrimp. It's a steal at $12 considering how much seafood they packed in here. Crab cakes - no filler here, these babies are all chunky crab. The apple slaw it comes with pairs well and is light and refreshing. Short ribs - one giant short rib over several heaping spoonfuls do sweet potato mashed potatoes and a fried Swiss chard patty. The flavors of everything here are very rich and super heavy. It's excellent, but was too heavy for me to finish. Butter poached lobster - never really though I could call anything poached in butter light, but this dish was both generous in portion, yet light. You get a full lobster, and we got a big boy, and it was perfectly cooked. The mushrooms and spaghetti squash and the perfect accompaniments in terms of flavor, texture, and lightness. Really a perfect dish. I really don't get the poor reviews on this place. We loved everything about it. Should we find ourselves back in Newport, we'll swing by here for dinner again.

So it's 2014, Easter weekend. And we've just had the nicest Easter buffet brunch within memory here. And we've done a few in MA where we live. We stayed elsewhere in Newport but picked here from a few choices for Easter dinner. To start, the valet parking guys outside greeted us nicely. The large room ambience was fine, food was nicely set up, plenty of variety and sectioned into breakfast food, fruit, dinner sides, meat carving station, raw bar (hello HUGE fabulous shrimp, hello!) kids food area, omelet station, and dessert and coffee. They even had potato latkes, who DOES that this side of a real Jewish deli? What an unexpected treat. Good too. The broccolini and carrots were a little on the crunchy side, the smoked shoulder was fabulous, the roast beef looked very rare. Fresh salads, Boursin cheese mashed potatoes, all good. The various desserts looked amazing, I just wasn't in the mood for sweet. Hubby loved the carrot cake. Coffee was good. The thing that earns 5 stars is that nothing was over salted. So rare to find a meal not liberally loaded with salt in everything from veggies to potato dishes to brined meats. Its.everywhere.ugh. But not here at the Viking! We tasted flavor instead of salt-as-flavor in the dishes we had, so really have to thank the chef. Thank you Viking chef! Well played sir or m'am! The staff was responsive to some requests I had, the duo that sang added a little extra something you want in a special dinner, and they had an Easter egg hunt outside for the kids. We will probably do this again and recommend brunch here. Very easy to find, park, and worth the price.

The tea service was lackluster, uninspired, and just a general disappointment. Maybe I'm a snob because in Boston, the land of the exquisite tea, we do it perfectly every single time. I never question the quality of the service or the food. However, this place was a huge let down.

DISCLAIMER: We only ate breakfast here, so I would assume the cook (who is supposed to be fantastic) is only there for lunch/dinner crowds. The problem was that everything was just too overdone with spices/flavor. It is almost like this restaurant is faux French. My eggs were overly greasy, my hash browns were greasy and super garlicy, and the coffee was burnt. Service was fine, nothing special. Love the Hotel Viking though.

I had my tea party themed bridal shower here and it was absolutely perfect! When I was looking online for venues the Hotel Viking's One Bellevue tea room really stood out. The space was bright, beautiful, not Victorian, and served Afternoon Tea! Sign me up! The bridal party was in charge of picking the location and, lucky me, they chose this spot. The staff was awesome. Need a trash bag? One showed up in two minutes. Dietary restriction? Substitution came without a problem. Everyone was raving about the blueberry scones still being warm and they were so so delicious. The only thing I would have changed is no matter how many people were at the table the same amount of food came on the tea tray. So the table with two people got the same amount of food as the table with six. Since they paid per person I think the table with six should have got more tea sandwiches and pastries. Those tables demolished the tray where as the smaller tables had plenty leftover. Everyone seemed full and happy though! If you are looking for a bridal shower location, I highly recommend this spot. I had about 20 people and it could easily fit up to 30 if you are having a bigger event.

Hubby and I thought we'd start the day off with a breakfast at One Bellevue -- they make very nice Greek omelets -- with table outside to enjoy one of the last great days of summer. Got to the restaurant and if the hostess were any slower in seating people, we would have had to check for a pulse. Actually, we later discovered that if she wasn't bussing tables as well, maybe she could have done a proper job dealing with the front. We asked for a table outside. No can do. Seems the restaurant didn't have enough staff available to open the outside, which is only open during warm months anyway. Food was okay but it was a huge disappointment. There were two Romanian guys working to staff an entire dining room, which wasn't any fairer to them. A hotel that can't staff up for holiday weekends? One has to wonder.

Had lunch here. Beautiful location and excellent service however the food left a lot to be desired. I had the crab cakes and French onion soup. The crab cakes were HEAVILY breaded. Maybe 3 pieces of lump crab? Very disappointed as this is a seafood haven. The French onion soup was ok. The servers and host were very friendly and made the experience enjoyable.

After an awkward start of having to get the hotel attendant to find a host/ess to seat us, we had an enjoyable and relaxing lunch here at One Bellevue. My husband and I had the Spring Carrot Soup as an appetizer. The presentation was simple and beautiful - the orange soup with green parsley oil drizzled over the top and a dollop of lemon creme fraiche in the middle made for a lovely and colorful start to our meal. The soup was delicious. It was rich and light and the lemon creme fraiche was a tasty treat in each bite. When the soup was gone, my husband asked if we should order more! For our lunch entree we shared the Monterey Chicken Sandwich with a side salad. The sandwich was simple, fresh, and nicely flavored. The salad was a refreshing mix of greens, chopped asparagus, sun-dried tomatoes, and sunflower seeds. But the star of the show was the dressing. I have no idea what kind it was but I licked my bowl clean! The service was appropriately sparse but attentive throughout the mean. The menu was very limited, but what the place lacks in variety it makes up for in flavor! Everything was on point and delicious.

Good service, underwhelming food. Decor: very nice and fitting for a historic hotel. The dishes were clean and surrounding area was quiet. (Our group (4 people) was the only one there for lunch.) Service: Outstanding. While the server didn't know the difference between a saucer and an appetizer plate, she was attentive, quick and very polite. Food: Horrible. The burger was cooked, as asked (medium), but the mushroom/onion topping was cold and congealed. The side salad was wilted and drenched with a ranch-like dressing, even though I had asked for balsamic vinaigrette. I felt slightly sick after lunch. We mistakenly stayed even though we wanted a brunch menu (only lunch and dinner menu available). Manager: the manager was looking at wine selection in the next room and didn't bother to come check on us, even though we were the only guests in the restaurant. Overall, very disappointed with what should have been a nice dining experience.

On vacation recently my husband, sister , brother in law and I went into this restaurant for desserts and after dinner drinks. It was late about 9:45. We took seats at a table and were ignored by the staff. If it was closed fine the staff could have let us know. We left. I sent an email which went unanswered. It may have a great history but no future.

Just went here tonight! On a little New England getaway, and this was our tastiest meal so far and by far! The scallops are incredible! The manager is a pleasure as well. He really knows how to treat customers and just seems very genuine. But, there's sometimes a but, our service sucked. Our waiter was missing for long periods of time. Our drinks took forever. Our long island iced tea came out as a regular iced tea. The shrimp cocktail must have been fresh caught because we could have fished the shrimp and brought it out faster. We were about to leave when the manager saved the day! He was so nice to work with! I'm glad we stayed because it was incredibly yummy :) Hopefully the server was just new and will learn in time. Def worth a stop while in Newport!

Dirty plates, dirty water glasses, dirty teacups, stray hair on linens, bug in milk, mediocre food at best, and most importantly unapologetic staff. This is the worst high tea experience ever.

Decided to go based on location to our inn. Ordered mutiple apps but only one stood out which was the tacos, but I would've preffered a corn taco instead of flour. The grilled octopus was a little too tough and the potatoes on the side with the mustard sauce just didn't go with it. The salad was decent and the asparagus "fries" were disaapointing and overly battered. Service was friendly and quick to start with but ended with waiting excessively long for bill. Attempted to check out the upstairs bar and found a poorly put together patio with limited selections and no view from the roof.

The hotel viking in Newport continues to disappoint. The service is fair at best, the food is mediocre and the rooms are shoddy. We were on the rooftop for the Fourth of July. We had a reservation, yet they had no table for us. They ended up seating us at a counter, the food was cold and the waitstaff were overwhelmed. Would not return. Totally overpriced.

I would love to give this place a zero star if I could. Coming from NYC with my great friends to have a nice restaurant experience on our lovely vacation trip, our night was completely destroyed by their unprofessional, disorganized, terrible service. So four of us came to the restaurant with reservation, took about 20 min for waitress to take our drink order, another 20 min to take our order. We were cool about it since the waitress said "appreciate your patience" meaning she was aware that it was a long wait. We ordered their restaurant week course menu, then it took AN HOUR to get our first appetizer. Plus she brought my food wrong insisting "no! you ordered this!" when I said "oh I ordered something else." My friends and husband also went "no, she did not order that" so she went back to get my dish, although now I feel I really should have said I did not remember what I ordered because it took goddamn long. We complained to the maitre'd or perhaps the manager of the restaurant, and he said he'd give us another bottle of wine to make up for it. Then when our waitress came back to give us a bottle of wine, she was visibly upset. After our appetizer, the server came to clean the table and ask if we are ready for the dessert. We had to laugh since we saw other customers who came later than us were getting their dessert after several course meals and we haven't even had our entree. Then this waitress came back with our entree, and she did it again. We had vegetarian friends so one of them ordered the dish from the appetizer section to be his entree. She brought him a dish with appetizer portion. She gave me cod when I ordered salmon and said "it's salmon!" and obviously it wasn't. I have to say-the food was really good. But the service was beyond intolerable that made our whole dinning experience uncomfortable and enenjoyable. We had to leave after spending two and a half hours of miserable humiliating experience. We canceled our dessert which we were not even sure if we could get by next morning at that point. We really don't know what that was all about. We were really patient and be totally nice about it until we finally told our waitress we want to just get check and leave canceling our dessert. We apparently did not look like their regular customers or the locals, we might look a bit young for their restaurant, but it is still unacceptable to be treated like that. Not sure if that was the waitress or the kitchen or really us. But guess what? Screw them. Eff this place. We'll never come back.

Wow!!! This place is absolutely awesome! If I ever go to Newport again, this is my dinner place. Food was freshly made, lots of local ingredients, beautifully blended together. The chef paid attention to all of my dietary restrictions. The seafood chowder was divine! The best I've ever had. Highly recommend it to anyone! Especially for dinner. Breakfast was good, too, but dinner exceeded all of my expectations.

Has every other person who reviewed One Bellevue gone to a different restaurant?!? I love this place and go there at least 2-3 times a year. The wait staff is always attentive without being overbearing. The food has always been well prepared and commensurate with what I'd expect in an establishment such as the Viking. One thing that surprises me is that if there was a problem I didn't see any of the posters say they attempted to resolve it with the hotel manager. I once had a problem at the Viking (not the restaurant) and they did such a great job of rectifying it that I was made an instant fan! btw...the eggs Benedict is the best I've had and as a matter of fact I always ask for a third egg and extra sauce which I'm given at no charge.

We were told to go to the rooftop bar at The Viking but instead looked into the restaurant and decided to come here. When we first arrived the hotel reminded me of The Driskill in Austin (one of my favorite spots) but when they took us into the dining room it was quite bleh. The front bar area was very generic and the dining room just felt very dated, and not trendy dated. We were shown outside where we were immediately obsessed. A fireplace and a musician playing Neil Young covers, yes please. The staff was very friendly and nice although a bit slow. The salad portion was huge compared to what I would have expected - and delicious. The risotto was also delicious. Portions in general were large. When you go somewhere "fancy" like this you expect expensive and small portions so we were impressed. I'm excited to go back here.

I stayed at the Hotel Viking for four nights and ate here four times for breakfast, which was included with my rate. The food was really good. I had the Newport Omelet with lobster twice and the weekend buffet twice, which included eggs, sausage, bacon, potatoes, yogurt, pastries, bagels, bread, fresh fruit and an omelet station with a chef. The servers were all very nice and helpful. I'd definitely recommend this restaurant if you're looking for a nice place to have breakfast in Newport.

This was my fine dining experience alone and I was not disappointed! I was actually surprised that there weren't more people here. Excellent service. My waiter was very knowledge and offered wonderful suggestions for my meal. AND he was handsome!! Bonus points! I got the char-broiled steak tips which had a good seasoning/flavor to them and a side of mashed potatoes. I thought it was a little weird that the steak tips came with fries but the fries were so good I didn't mind it! They have an interesting cocktail menu that I'd like to try in the future. All around good experience.

Terrible experience. Waited 20 minutes for a waitress to come to the table and they were not filled! Very unprofessional. The front of the house was very disorganized and frazzled. My husband and I left and saw a line 20 people deep waiting to get a table. Hope they have a lot if time!

A warm summer night. A good bordeaux. A reservation. And... a toddler. For a weekend night in-season, One Bellevue wasn't busy. They sat us right down. Much to everyone's relief, upon glimpsing the tiniest member in our party they brought a booster seat right out. Kid friendly. Hallelujah. A beautiful old-world dining room. Live music. A beautiful evening. The menu? If you've been to a restaurant in the US in the past, say, 40 years, you will know what to expect. Some steaks. Some clam chowder. Some chicken. After answering some questions the server took our order. Special requests were graciously accepted. Spinach instead of potatoes? No problem. Lamb well done for the pregnant lady who wants not a single pink fiber? No problem. The appetizers came and we lingered. We passed around the tomato salad. Stories were brought out from a decade ago. No rush from the wait staff. No rush sort of turned into straight up being ignored. It feels we waited for the better part of an hour for the main course. Our littlest one decided the jazz band was good to dance to. Good thing we weren't in a rush. Finally the food came out. We ravenously tucked in. A perfecto roast chicken. A ribeye they probably needed a pickup truck to bring in. It was good. With one exception. The expectant mother's lamb was pink. Maybe even a little red. Not so bad for a dedicated carnivore, but not the charred match stick she had wanted. It was graciously taken back for more fire. And when it came back? Still pink. So they took it back again. This time it was brought back by the manager who apologized and took it off the bill. And it was as grey and lifeless as a pregnant woman could want. A mistake fixed as far as we were concerned. We left into the warm summer night pretty happy. Was it a blemish free, time efficient experience? No. But we were fine with lingering. Would we go back? Sure.

This is an afternoon tea review, just so you all know. At $15 per head, you get what you pay for. The sandwiches were soggy, with muted flavors and sub par ingredients. The truffles didn't pop at all; they were just uninspired gobs of chocolate. The service was attentive but not exceedingly pleasant. I expected more out of an afternoon tea in the Hotel Viking, and I was sorely disappointed. If they started charging $25 per and revamped their tea set-up, I'd go back. But until then, I'm sure there are other places in Newport to get a nice afternoon tea.

We ordered the blueberry pancakes for breakfast, which were described on the menu as having "maple syrup and whipped cream." The pancakes were not fully cooked (batter inside), the maple syrup was probably Aunt Jemima, not real maple syrup, and there was no whipped cream. They should have done far better for $8. Then add $4 for the bottomless cup of coffee.

Disclaimer: This review is a compilation of two experiences, one in the bar, and the other in the restaurant, albeit at breakfast. ********************************** Stopped in the bar after having had dinner at the Black Pearl. I was with some traveling companions, and we wanted to watch the end of the first half of the NCAA Championship game. Ordered a Grand Marnier, and the bartender poured a very, very generous (3 oz?) snifter. He was equally a prince in filling wine glasses. That said, the place was dead, and their were only a pair of other bar patrons. The next morning, with a different set of mates, I ordered buttermilk pancakes. Now one of my sons has given me the ultimate buttermilk pancake recipe that has real buttermilk and melted butter, and I have astronomical standards. What I've learned is that the batter practically has to be prepared fresh for the quality to be right. There is a noticeable difference between pancakes made with fresh batter, and say, the same batter that's been sitting up for 30 minutes. Saurday morning afficionados will know exactly what I mean. So what do I get? 3 five-inch disks of cardboard. Yuck! It was like they'd been sitting up under a hot lamp for a couple of hours back in the kitchen somewhere. If you stay at the Viking, One Bellevue is a great place to launch and return to, but avail yourself of the better restaurants of Newport!

UPDATE: I am obsessed with this place. I have been going every week, sometimes 2X's a week. The mac n cheese is the BEST I have ever had. Ever. and.... its $4!!! The 1/2 portions on the entree list are MORE than enough, and the staff there (David in particular) are amazing. The French Onion soup, it also the best I have ever had. Its a great place to cosy up to in the winter. Its always nice and warm inside, and the comfy couches are so inviting, its near impossible to get out of them after eating comfort food, and sipping on wine. Yum! What a hidden Gem here in Newport. Yes, the Viking is a HUGE hotel for Newport standards, but the restaurant is a cute little place. It has a nice outdoor patio (with heat lamps for the cooler nights). The food is really good. I had a sweet corn and fennel soup followed by the Tomato Salad with big fat Croutons. They also offer 1/2 portions which is awesome, cause really? Who wants to eat an enormous plate of food in the middle of the day? Im really happy my friend brought me here. Im looking forward to going back and trying some more of the menu! Oh, and for being at the Viking, its a lot cheaper than I thought it was going to be. THAT was a nice surprise.

i first reviewed this restaurant a year ago, as it is down the street from our home, hence convenient. my husband and i always enjoyed it, and found the food consistently good and reliable. last night, we were a party of six, and not only was the service missing in action, the kitchen was off. while it was a sunday night, it IS season, and if they are not on their "A" game in July, well, 'nuff said. my caesar salad was made with iceberg lettuce. iceberg. bottled dressing. i suspect the lobster salad was made with frozen lobster meat, for it did not have that fresh, abundant taste. a huge disappointment. crab cakes looked amazing, and our guest pronounced them wonderful. they have recently done some landscaping outside to visually open up the patio area outside the restaurant. nice idea. lovely patio. it was raining last night, or else we would have been eating there. i am truly hoping we caught an off night, and we will try this one more time, but i must tell you, what a dramatic spiral downward in the service and food . please guys, pull it together. you've been too good in the past, to ruin it for your future.

My husband and I stayed at the Viking again this year. One reason is the location and the other is one Bellevue. Dinner was wonderful...lamb chops, swordfish, salmon. Portions are huge and beautifully presented. We dined outdoors on the patio which was very pleasant. I suggest candles or lights on the tables which were not offered. By the time we finished dinner, we could not see to sign the check. Otherwise, terrific.

UNREAL!!!!!! The soft shell crab was incredible, the french onion soup was made perfectly, the ahi tuna as the main was memorable and the truffle mac and cheese was unreal we licked the bowl after. We finished our dinner off with guiness brownie which was the perfect ending. I'm def having dinner there again everything on the menu sounds delicious cant wait to go back. Service, atmosphere and cocktails were on point.

It's rare that I can say I just had "the best" something or other, but I had that experience twice during my meal at the Hotel Viking's restaurant. Full disclosure: the chef and staff knew I was there as press, but I don't think that had much effect on my experience, except perhaps getting the chef to tell me the secret behind his phenomenal curried butternut squash soup. Creamy, layered with flavors both simple and complex, the soup blew me away. I almost asked for a vat to go. There weren't many vegetarian entrées on the menu, so the chef threw together an amusée, which the waiter assured me he'd have fun creating. And I definitely had fun eating it. I started out with a gnocchi dish that was the second of my bests that evening. Never before have I had such wonderful gnocchi -- perfect consistency and grilled slightly on each side. Morels and other delicious ingredients rounded out the dish. I wasn't as thrilled with the main entrée, which I owe more to the fact that I'm not a huge fan of artichoke hearts than a fault on the chef's part. Even with one of my not-so-favorite vegetables at the core of the meal, I still ate every bite. A trio of fresh gelati followed the meal -- each tasting as if they'd just been made seconds earlier. I rolled off to my hotel room more than sated and fell into a deep slumber. I'd definitely drive another six hours for another meal at One Bellevue.

Food fabulous- Service/ Ambiance a bad night's dream It saddens me to write this review regarding a hotel I have been fond of for these many passed years. Unfortunately, last night we were treated to a Dr Jeckel/ Mr Hyde experience in their dining room. Where in the past, they had booths, plants and a romantic ambiance, we were greeted with emptiness of small tables and large open floor space. More resembling a version of a Holiday Inn versus than a romantic boutique hotel setting. Business was slow at 8:30 which makes the poor attendance of our server that much more inexcusable. Water glasses never refilled, empty wine glasses never removed ( though she did try sell us another glass twice). No bread available. No suggestions for an alternative. And the music. 60's rock? We asked it to be turned down lower 3 times. Speaker was right over the table. With all the empty tables to choose from already a bad decision by the management Food was incredible but at the prices their asking, ambiance and service must also be of similar standards. Shame on the Viking to dummy down the small things in a time when it counts most

This review is specifically for the tea service. My friend and I went to afternoon tea last Friday, and I was completely unimpressed. The server, while pleasant, didn't remember some basics - like spoons. Sort of hard to stir your tea with no spoon... and the sugar came on a swizzle stick. Great for penny candy, horrid for tea. The food was uninspired, and not tea-like at all. Chunky chicken salad, cucumber sandwiches made with left-over crudites (really? diced cucumber? and mozzarella? and balsamic vinegar?), and shitake-onion sandwiches (with crunchy, not-rehydrated mushrooms) - all under-seasoned. They did cut the crusts off - I'll give them that. Coffee cake was tasty. Scones ...were not scones, and were not fully baked. Raw pastry with "lemon curd" (more of a lemon-flavored foam) and "truffles" (a wad of melted baking chocolate held together with chopped walnuts) were not the way I wanted to end the meal. My friend found that she was still hungry, and ordered a club sandwich - which she said was great (I can attest to the fries being wonderful), so it's not all the food, just the tea service, that's not up to snuff.

I had many drinks here, and a few meals as well. The hotel staff is quick to point out all the awards they win and how great the chef is, but honestly I was a little underwhelmed. On my first night, the power was out in much of the hotel so they were working with a limited menu (steak or salmon with gazpacho and shrimp cakes and berries with cream). I didn't care for the gazpacho or shrimp cakes, and the steak was inedible. I like butter, and I like salt, but this was so buttery and oversalted that I only ate a few bites before I just couldn't take it anymore. I understand that the kitchen wasn't in top form, but then don't serve anything. There is no excuse for oversalting like that, especially when you tell me how fantastic and award winning the chef is (again, some more). But accidents happen, and clearly circumstances were not ideal, so I can give them a pass on that. A pet peeve of mine is when food comes out prepared differently than it is described, and no one mentions any substitutions. (For example, the sandwich I ordered to my room - strike two) I sat in the lounge and had the onion dip which was very tasty, and they were fine with swapping out chips for sliced veggies for me. Their award winning chili was not my thing. Too sweet, not spicy at all with giant chunks of meat, covered in cheese and melted (like French onion soup). That part was great, duh, but not the healthier option I had envisioned. The bar manager Dave is an absolute doll though, and definitely contributed to two very boozy nights while I was there.

This restaurant is located within the Hotel Viking, which is a 4 star restaurant in this city full of trendy upscale nice places to eat. This place I ate breakfast at well staying here and what a mistake. The interior is very nice and tasteful for this hotel. the staff thinks they are working at the Ritz, acting snobby like they are doing the customers a favor. The menu for at least breakfast was ordinary not creative items and they also had a buffet type set up. I opted to get the buffet and was disappointed. The food was over cooked and was worse than bad diners I had eaten at on Long Island. The bad service along with the bad food would make me think twice about eating here for any meal. Try one of the hundred different places to eat within walking distance. As for this place, skip it, it is not worth your money or time.
