Stumbled across this place on Friday and was impressed with the selection, willingness to allow us to try as many flavors as we wanted and their sorbet choices which was described as dairy free, gluten free and vegan friendly. As my girlfriend is lactose intolerant she enjoyed a strawberry, lime and mint sorbet and I got the bourbon vanilla ice cream. Both were excellent. We returned to Newport two days later and I decided to Yelp for the best ice cream place and we ended up back at Cold Fusion. This time she went with raspberry sorbet and I got salted caramel ice cream, both excellent again. Highly recommended.

It's an east coast v. west coast gelato throw down! Not really, but I'm a Californian who lives in an area packed full of gelato options, so I was definitely curious to see how the product is handled in the east. Overall, they didn't disappoint. I kept in mind that this shop is smack dab in the middle of the busiest, most touristy area of Newport, so that would account for any lines or inconveniences in parking. The shop itself is small, simple and quaint. The jovial gentleman behind the counter was more than happy to hand out samples and was a good salesman. Over my ten minute wait, I didn't see a single person walk away empty-handed, and believe me, there were some indecisive people in line. The gelato itself was a little more creamy and a little less sweet than I'm used to. I enjoyed the vanilla bourbon the best. The only let down - and maybe this was just a matter of timing and what they had in stock - was that they just had four options and two of those were takes on vanilla. Whatever the case, it's a reliable option for a sweet treat while you check out the shops!

Delicious gelato, friendly service and they even allows dogs to come in with you. Well done Cold Fusion

We came in the off season, so the gelato choices were quite limited. I had a really good Spumoni, it's a unique flavor that you don't see too many places, so I was thrilled to order it! My boyfriend's chocolate hazelnut was pretty standard. It was priced on the higher side of most gelato places, but it's a tourist town, so it's expected!

Hit or miss with their gelatos. Nice consistency and interesting concepts, but lacking in depth and flavor. Someone else mentioned they're like ice cream rather than gelato, but even ice cream has more flavor. I tried the amaretto fig, which was nice enough if somewhat weak. I mean amaretto! Fig! These are bold, exciting flavors and I could hardly taste them! I was truly disappointed in the salted chocolate which was somehow simultaneously chalky and bitter and flavorless. Like they used cheap baker's squares for their flavoring! I couldn't finish it. Someone else mentioned their sorbets are good, and I will still try those, but like anyone who's tried authentic Italian gelato, Cold Fusion doesn't hold a candle. So sad, they seem like a great business and I'd love to support them.

Thanks Lee! Your kindness and amazing customer service made my day! I feel like a part of the family every time I walk in. If you want some spectacular ice cream or gelato you have to try this place!!! Especially liked their lavender honey!

On a hot day like today, Cold Fusion was perfect. The $4.31 for a small gelato was well worth the expense. The peanut butter brownie gelato was creamy, indulgent, and refreshing. The staff was very helpful and offered to let us try whatever we wanted. (The blackberry merlot does taste like wine, fyi). I will definitely go back next time I am in Newport!

gelato is apparently a controversial subject; i personally prefer ice cream more, but there was no way in hell i was gonna wait in a 20 person line at ben and jerry's, and i like supporting my local businesses. the two people working behind the counter were clearly the boss and his employee; the boss was jovially handing out samples left and right, whereas the employee was passive but pleasant. i ended up going with the madagascar bourbon vanilla (the boss winkingly threatened to card me), which was not as boozy as i would have liked, but was still good. i have a tendency to like my boozy ice creams, and this one was just mediocre. my friend got the apple, and it tasted just like applesauce, but in gelato form. intriguing. all in all, this place hit the spot, but was pricey. -$4 for small cup/cone -$5 for medium -$6 for large -cash or credit -small shop, little space to sit

Loved it! I have a daughter who is dairy free, and they had so many delicious dairy free sorbets! Staff was super nice, and there was no line, unlike Ben and Jerry's.

The true gelato snobs may not be impressed, but I had a great experience. I was most intrigued by the combination of flavors: chocolate covered strawberry, peanut butter brownie, blueberry and lavender, chocolate and hazelnut, maple and habanero (which was my favorite). I thought every sample I had was delicious--maybe not angels singing level of good, but I definitely made the "oh wow" face. In addition, the servers were extremely friendly, upbeat, and nonjudgemental when it came to giving out samples. They even participated in an ice bucket challenge by providing the materials for a customer who asked if he could dump ice water over himself in front of their store. And finally: the amount of gelato per serving is truly American! Huge scoops, well worth the price, and I look forward to returning.

I love this place. The flavors are inventive and so far everything I've tried (Five Chinese Spices (*****), Passion Fruit Mango (*****), Cake Batter (***), Nut Brittle Something (***) was at least good or better. So fare my favorite is the Passionfruit Mango. As other reviewers have said it's a bit off the main strip, but well worth the trip.

I was strolling around Newport yesterday and stopped in here. The gelato is great! Very creamy and flavorful. I got a pint with mixed berry and another tart berry which I can't remember the name and it's awesome. Try this place out. It's great.

I don't know if I'm just being a gelato snob here, having traveled to Italy and eaten ample gelato there several times, or if Cold Fusion just is not as good as it gets. I will start by saying that I have bought the Peanut Butter flavor in the pint several times at my local Whole Foods. I definitely have enjoyed it and consider it to be a good, frozen gelato. Going into the shop on thames, its bright and the service is extremely friendly. I got the espresso flavor. To me it was barely strong of any type of flavor, and the speaks to the fact of how gelato is made in US as compared to other countries. However, I have had great gelato at Dolce Gelateria, it's all in how it is made. It seems to me the way cold fusion makes it, their gelato loses a lot of it's flavor in the process. The consistency is that of a great gelato but I was not really impressed. I understand you can't get that close to the real thing unless you are in Italy. However, the team was flavoring samples at my local whole foods recently and I was startled when I found out I could not have the cappuccino chip flavor, why? Because it has gluten. Being confused as to what would make it contain gluten, the worker replied "the chocolate chips". Hmm? Normally chocolate chips don't contain gluten, and if there is nothing else in the gelato with wheat, it makes me A. wonder what type of chocolate chips this place is using and B. maybe the staff are just ill informed. This is the experience that kind of put me off, being that I know most ingredients that contain gluten and chocolate isn't one of them.

We happened to be in Newport on the first day of the season for cold fusion and I was really excited because I LOVE gelato. They weren't fully stocked but had plenty of flavors to choose from. I got Elvis and Xanadu and both were really good. Nice and creamy and really delicious. It was a little chilly so the place was empty and we were able to take some time to talk to the manager who gave us the history of the company and some information about Newport since it was our first time there. It was overall a really good experience. I would like to go back to see it in peak season and try out some new flavors.

DELICIOUS best gelato I have had this side if Italy!! You'll love this place. It's absolutely worth a try and the servers are patient and they will let you sample a few gelato until you get the perfect one for you while still keeping the line moving so you are not waiting in line. A great experience overall!

The gelato was delicious. However, the service was unparalleled! We walked in and the owner immediately offered us samples. He made suggestions based on what was popular with other people and provided sample combinations of favors. Do yourself a favor and skip the chain shops down the road and treat your mouth to refreshing gelato and friendly service.

Creme Fraiche and passion fruit is another excellent combo!! I would like to try the cantaloupe and cake batter gelato next time. I was bummed they didn't have their boozy flavors...last time those were among the faves. Is it just me or have their portion sizes gotten larger? I got a large with three flavors and it was huge!! Had to share it with my twin. But definitely get either two flavors or three flavors - like I said, it's all about the flavor combos when it comes to gelato.

Tasteless gelato, waste of calories. I was pretty irritated at wasting calories and money on this. Do NOT walk by Ben and Jerrys for this place, no comparison. I tried chocolate strawberry, sweet cream, and strawberry in a waffle cone. None of it tastes like much of anything. The waffle cone was so thin it was barely able to hold the gelato. very disappointing. I don't give out one stars too often but this deserves it. The kid working the counter was nice so that is worth one star.

Meh. Good, not great. I'm probably biased because I've had a lot of real gelato from Europe, and this is just NOT real gelato. It's ice cream. It's good Ice cream... But still.... My husband got the chocolate hazelnut and he said the flavor was good, but it was icy/ freezer burned. I had the Belgian chocolate and the texture was good but the flavor was nothing too special. Service was friendly and prompt but I have to deduct points for the product they offer... A bit on the pricey side at $4/ each for a small cup...

5 stars for the sorbet... Minus 4 stars for cleanliness!!!!! Add 1 star back bc I didn't get sick & gosh darnit, I LOVE their sorbet I wish the stupid place was cleaned & that I could UN-SEE the NASTINESS I saw in there!!! So conflicted! My stomach says "love" & my brain shouts "ick!!!" 2 cases of sorbet/gelato: one had an active gnat flying around in there. The other had TWO dead, smushed flying ants... Along the sides... God knows how many are buried in the actual gelato. GROSS! One of us pointed them out to the server & he just ignored it! Didn't even acknowledge he heard it! Worse yet- he kept serving like it wasn't there. Did he clean it? Nope. Maybe he wa saving it for cleaning time? Either way. Nasty. There were also flies & flying ants everywhere. Every other store had their doors open, why did this place have so many bugs? Does anyone care? The workers sure didn't. Seems like the owner doesn't either (as the workers didn't keep the place clean) The gelato I find mediocre. Not impressed. But the sorbet- so good! The best I've had! I don't even like sorbet! I discovered cold fusion gelato bc they served it at hemenways. The raspberry & the mixed berry were SO delicious, I called hemenways after the meal to ask where they got it... Then made sure to stop by when I was in Newport. The first visit, I didn't notice any nastiness- got the strawberry rhubarb which was delish!!! I don't even LIKE rhubarb! How amazing is their gelato when they get me liking two things I normally wouldn't like: sorbet & rhubarb! But alas, now I can't UN-SEE what I saw. The place is disgusting. Please sell ur stuff in the grocery store so that I can scoop my own!

WWGD. That stands for What Would Giada Do. I guess what Giada DeLaurentis does when she's in town is to visit Cold Fusion for some Gelato. Many customers mentioned it, and there's a Newport magazine article documenting her visit taped to the window of the store. Giada or no Giada, this place is definitely worth a visit if you're craving a yummy frosty treat. There were about 30 different flavors to choose from. Some basic flavors like cheesecake, chocolate and raspberry, but also some pretty interesting flavors like maple bacon, chocolate vanilla, fluffernutter and Cassia. There were also some different sorbets to choose from and the menu board listed choices like milkshakes and sundaes. Cash only too. I chose the maple bacon and chocolate vanilla. The small is a good-sized serving--you can get one or two flavors. The maple bacon was delicious. Smooth maple flavor--not overly sweet at all. There were real bits of smoky bacon--just enough to make it interesting and add a bit of chewy bits. The chocolate vanilla was also really good. It was almost like smoky vanilla chocolate stout--if that makes any sense. Also quite tasty. I don't know if it's seasonal, but the price was very reasonable at $2 for a small. WWADIN. What Would Aimee Do in Newport? Easy, visit Cold Fusion.

They have a wide selection of gelato. The gelatos we have tried have all been good. I would say however the place is small and there isnt much seating, so expect to be walking while eating, or finding a place to sit. The service isnt so great. I have yet to meet a friendly employee, but I am sure when you work at a place in Newport you probably get sick of being nice to people. That aside the prices are pretty reasonable and we find that a small is more than enough.

This is the best gelato I've ever had. And, as some of you know, I'm a food snob. I'm not into the fluffy, crazy sugar-filled versions like 'cinnamon strawberry cheesecake bubblegum cotton candy cookie swirl'. rather, i prefer the sorbet types, and the mango still had pieces of mango in it. the orange tasted like a creamsicle and rocked as much as the mango. waiting with baited breath for a ny opening or else it's a 2 hour drive for dessert every night.

My local Whole Foods recently started selling Cold Fusion gelato behind the counter. I purchased the mint chip gelato and was disappointed because it didn't taste any different than regular ice cream. It's frustrating when a place tries to pass ordinary ice cream as gelato when in fact they are two different things. The truth is authentic gelato has less butterfat, less sugar, and less air than ordinary ice cream. There should be noticeable differences between it and regular ice cream. Perhaps the other flavors resemble gelato more, so maybe I'll try another flavor next time.

Researched ahead of time places to get ice cream in Newport, as it was turning into a particularly warm day. Decided on Cold Fusion as it seemed to offer the best of both worlds (sorbet and gelato). People, real gelato is smooth as butter and tastes so luxurious that you want to coat your body in it, just to make the neighbors jealous. We tried almost every flavor and waited to be impressed.... sadly, I'm still waiting.

Really wanted to try this place after seeing it on Food Network, but didn't get to in 2007. Fast forward to 2013, almost didn't get to again, but insisted on it. When I went none of the flavors I wanted to try were there. Everything that was there was generic. Nothing special. I almost wanted to walk out with nothing. But got something anyway. I got coconut and Madagascar vanilla. Honestly, underwhelming. I've had better Haagen Dazs really. Supposedly the flavors change every few hours. Wish I knew that.

I can't believe i'm giving a gelataria 3 stars... Lets start with the gelato. Pretty solid..I sampled pumpkin and mango which were both delicious but decided to stick with my normal gelato flavor, hazelnut. They had many traditional gelato flavors along with fruity sorbets. My only complaint with the gelato is that it immediately started to melt. Service - Just okay.. A bunch of teenagers were working behind the counter on a Saturday night. The girl who served my ice cream did a terrible job and gelato was all over the side of my cup. Since the gelato also started melting immediately I was left with gelato all over my hands. It's sad to even waste one drop of gelato. You can pay with either cash or credit. Also when ordering a small you can only get one flavor. Some places let you do two, but not here.

  • Robyn F.

The Gelato and sorbet here is pretty good. My big peeve about this place is the fact they FINALLY started to except credit cards, but only if you spend over 10.00. Okay, I'm not going to spend that kind of money when I just want one scoop of ice cream. Secondly, if you're going to post the 10.00 minimum bull crap, make sure to be consistent with the posting. Long story short, I went in there today expecting to use my card, saw the "10.00 minimum" sign, and then I ran down thames (Roughly 5 blocks) to the Bank of American ATM -- Ran back to Cold fusion, ordered by chocolate sorbet (Which is amazing, I do admit) , and while ordering some guy took out his credit card and paid for a Lime Ricky (Which is 4.00, I think), and the girl didn't say a thing to him. I was a sad panda, but at least my Chocolate Sorbet was delicious.

Delicious, very flavorful gelato. The teens serving let us try as many flavors as we wanted and were observant enough to notice when we were ready to order even when as the place filled up. We arrived on an unfortunate day, though, as none of the flavors were unique, we were hoping. The 1-flavor small cups were more than enough to satisfy our dessert stomachs. Salted caramel chunk and pistachio are recommended.

Salted Caramel and Belgian Chocolate for my husband; Maple Habañero, Coconut Chip, and Peanut Butter Chunk for me. Lee, the manager (who hails from Orange County, NY!) was effervescent and personable, making the tasting, selecting, and enjoying Cold Fusion Gelato experience one that will struggle to be duplicated. We can't recommend Cold Fusion enough!

How could I not love a place where the man working behind the counter let me and my boyfriend try as many flavors as we wanted. I'm pretty sure we tried a tiny spoon of almost all of the gelato and sorbet flavors at Cold Fusion. It was a hot day and the icy gelato was satisfying, cause all I was craving was something fruity, with that tart tang. I ended up getting a medium; peach mojito and fusion fruit. The two flavors did have the fruitiness and tang that I was looking for. At the same time it was sweet and addicting, sticky. The sorbet was just the right consistency, smoother than ice and light enough to eat the whole thing. After a while though, the tartness vanished and the two flavors melted together into a saccharine soup, still enjoyable but on the verge of too sweet. And my date got a small of the amaretto gelato. His was smooth and creamy, but not heavy like ice cream. It tricked the tongue into thinking that it was consuming ice cream, but the belly knew better and was able to take more than a smaller dose had it been ice cream. The amaretto flavor was subtle and fragrant, but still tangible and delicious. We decided that it would be extraordinary, had it had little amoretti or biscotti pieces nestled in the gelato, adding another texture and bringing in the surprise of crunch. But nonetheless, it was delicious and satisfying. The experience was great; the product was great and the staff (of one, at that moment) was friendly and patient. I was really grateful of that because when there are so many flavors to decide from, it takes me ages. He did not rush us and he also indulged us and let us taste as many as we wanted. The flavors that we got to try ranged from rose to coffee to apricot. Some resonated better than others, but the quality of ingredients and process, as well as the invention of flavors was apparent. I would love to try every flavor listed on their website, even the savory ones. Each is unique and creative, and quite frankly sound delicious.

Great gelato and cappuccino drinks in the heart of town. They have a good selection of favors as well as sorbet. They also serve very generous portions at reasonable prices are accommodate requests for a sample taste. Good location too.

Why would anybody go for pink berry or Ben and jerry factory made sugar when they can get home made incredible flavors and taste every one before u decide. Best in country.

This place is amazing. I can't believe how good this stuff is. It pops off your palate. The different flavors are amazing. And these people stand behind their product - really encouraging samples. You cannot go to Newport and not go here.

I literally don't understand howwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww there are ANY low reviews for this place. This is my go-to Gelato spot.. I dream about this Gelato - All Gelatos are judged by this Gelato and in fact I have YET to have a Gelato that is better than this place. I have eaten at the white horse tavern and I don't know this for a fact buttttttttttttttt the gelato I had there tasted suspiciously similar to Cold Fusion Gelato I cant say for sure it was Cold Fusion but I am almost 99.99999999999999% sure it was... If its good enough for one of the oldest tavern buildings in the United States.. trust me its good enough for you... It has an epically creamy texture, flavors for daysssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss.... and best part you can sample sample sample until you find the flavor that is right for you.. Can't beat that with a stick ;p

I have tried Cold Fusion before but never really thought twice about it until the last visit I made. Apricot/Rosemary gelato was intoxicatingly delicious and the Pink Grapefruit Sorbet was a perfect palate cleanser - sweet enough to enjoy but just a little bitter to remind you that yes, that is real grapefruit in there. I went for the kiddie size and seriously considered getting a second cup when I finished because it was so tasty. I will definitely be more proactive in getting to Cold Fusion more often in the future and would highly recommend you do the same! Cash only.

Great gelato and great service! We were so disappointed that Cold Fusion was closed during the week before Memorial Day, but as we were walking by, we noticed someone in the window. We knocked to ask when they were opening (there was no sign), and the guy was nice enough to let us in and serve us without being officially open! The gelato was some of the best I've ever had. The chocolate raspberry was my favorite flavor, and they were nice enough to let use try several. I will definitely come back!

As gelato goes, this place is pretty good, better than average for sure. A nice little neighborhood spot in what is mostly a tourist trap. Take the next feedback knowing that I am particular; I've lived in Italy and in the top 3 cities for food in the US--I have strong opinions on gelato and have even made my own before. Texture, vibrant taste, and creativity are things I look for. They have a modest but interesting selection of gelatos and ice cream. The dark chocolate I found a little crumbly and hard to eat with a spoon and tasted a bit more like chocolate syrup than real chocolate. An interesting twist would have been to have cocoa nibs, red peppers, or sea salt bits in addition to a rich chocolate taste. The raspberry chocolate could have had more of a fresh berry taste and tart finish--this was more sugary than I would have liked. The cappuccino flavor seemed light on expresso flavor but was otherwise good. In general, I would have liked to experience more of the spirit and essence of the ingredients. While not life-changing, it's still pretty good after a hot day:)

So so so so so good! I'm pregnant and have to stop myself from eating this everyday. The variety of flavors is amazing and everything is homemade!

I took a trip on Columbus Day to Newport and forgot my wallet. I was getting by on my stash of quarters throughout the day until I walked into Cold Fusion Gelato with travel weary feet around 5 pm. I picked through my pocket for quarters, and when I turned to leave the manager asked me what I was looking to order. I told him I just wanted a coffee but didn't have enough quarters left. He jumped from his seat and demanded that I have a seat and enjoy his famous cafe lattes. The machine was beautiful. It reminded me of what I saw in Italy in sweet shops that sold coffee. The manager brewed up just a delicious cafe latte that boosted the spirits of this weary traveler and sold me on the hospitality and beauty of Newport.

One thing that has always peeved me about gelato places is how pretentious they can be - I never quite understood the "no toppings" concept that accompanies most of these European-style frozen dairy/non-dairy product shops. What makes Cold Fusion Gelato worthy of five stars transcends the simply elegant assortment of gelatos (ranging from sweet potato to triple chocolate, everyone will be satisfied with their non-gritty, creamy selection). Cold Fusion gives customers the option of adding toppings...or a veritable homemade ice cream cone...to their gelato orders. The red-velvet, while exuding Southern decadence by itself, is only enhanced by bits of crushed Oreo. After all, this is 2013, and it's about time cookies and cream got a make over...red velvet cake batter with chunks of America's favorite cookie? Now that's a treat Europe should learn to enjoy.

Excellent gelato! I love ice cream and this was one of the best ice cream and gelato experiences I have tasted. The flavors are creative and wide ranging. The servers are knowledgable and clearly enjoy working there. Be sure to stop by!

I really liked how smooth and tasty their salted caramel crunch gelato was. Also liked the fact that I was offered (without having to ask for it) to try other flavors. I didn't give five stars because many of the flavors had nuts in them, limiting the choice for those who can't have nuts.

My wife and I have a solid routine when on vacation - and that routine includes getting ice cream in the evening, after a day of sight seeing. There was no place better for this than Italy, where we would make finding the best gelato in every city a competition. But usually in the US, we find just regular old ice cream and enjoy it fine (bu it's not the same). Today in Newport we found the best gelato outside of the old country. We tried so many flavors (and the girl behind the counter was very kind in humoring us) but we settled on peanut butter cup/cake batter (me) hazelnut/sea salt chocolate (her. Everything was so good and tasted exactly like the name. We each got a small and they really pile it on. Very large servings. Walk right past Ben and Jerry's and check this place out!

My new obsession...gelato. And despite being a balmy 50 degrees and windy, I didn't let that stop me from indulging while in Newport. Employees are friendly and will let you sample a bunch of flavors until you find "the one." For me it was chocolate coconut. It was almost dark chocolate and slightly bittersweet which the sweet coconut paired with perfectly. Portions are HUGE (especially since I came back to NYC and paid the same price for 1/2 the amount) and easily enough for 2 people to share in a small cup. Now I don't know why (time of day, day of the week, off season?) but the gelato was 50% off when I went around 8PM on a Saturday so my small cup was only about $2.15. Sweet....literally.

I give this place 4 1/2 stars. Only because it is the third best gelato I have had in my life. (First is Mondo Gelato in San Diego and then a place in Phoenix). I love their sorbets so much but their gelatos are so good too. I'm sad they close for the winter.

Luscious, silky, creamy gelato. Giada ate here during her trip to Newport. The flavors change daily, and on any given day there are about a couple dozen gelato choices and about a half dozen sorbets. The flavors I went with were mudslide (chocolate with Kahlua, Bailey's and vodka) and toasted sesame and honey. Wow. Both were exceptionally good, but the toasted sesame and honey especially was incredibly unique! Flavors I would never had considered using in a frozen dessert, and now I have no choice but to attempt my recreation of this tasty treat. Wish me luck :)

The place has won a lot of awards. They deserve it, for real. The cinnamon...so good. The gelato here is quite creamy and flavorful. They had a special on the lemonade B1G1 free, which was fantastic for the day - it was sunny and a bit warm. Great way to cool off. Come, take a seat, relax - you're in Newport.

I stopped in here while browsing shops along Thames street..there was a great selection of flavors. I definitely had to try some! The man helping me was very accommodating; he let me sample a plethora of flavors before I chose tarimisu. (Spelling probably not correct, lol) cute little shop. All in all I would stop in again it was just quite expensive.. But with great quality often comes a higher price.

I'm an enthusiastic home ice cream maker, and consider any travel I do as an excuse to find excellent ice cream places. Cold Fusion is as good as anything I've had anyplace -- visited 2 times in a week. Standout flavors for me were Apricot Rosemary gelato and a Key Lime sorbet. Made me so sad to see people eating from Ben and Jerry's down the street. Why, people? Did you also go to Newport to shop at the Gap?

i'm a gelato/ice-cream magnet, on the attracted end. was drawn in from across the street after dinner. although there weren't a huge myriad of flavors on display, there were enough to turn me into a kid in candy land. some of these flavors were VERY innovative too (ex. basil and curry, anyone?). was tempted to have a taste of a couple of the exotic flavors, but the place was too busy and i dared not hold them up. the line... i mean, there was no specific line, it seemed. got to order and stuck w/the mainstream stuff: cherry choco chip and choco strawberry. can't say either of them were memorable. just way too sweet and way too cold. i thought the gelato are supposed to be "warmer" than ice-cream, and while i prefer those on the colder and firmer side, this was a bit too cold. and i am speaking from a hot july/august night. i can't decide if $5 (was it more?) for those two-scoops is considered "inexpensive", or "moderate". probably somewhere in between.

I needed a break from stalking Sunny von Bülow's old haunts, so we stopped at Cold Fusion for some "gelato." My friends who live in Newport were going bonkers for Cold Fusion, so I figured we might as well try it out. The "gelato" they serve is more icey than creamy... Think chocolate sorbet. They definitely do have some interesting and fun flavors, and the counter guy was really nice and friendly in allowing us to have as many samples as we could stomach, but overall, I don't think it's the best I've ever had, or even really in the Top 10. They do give you a lot (although you do kind of pay a lot too), so that's a nice benefit, and the place itself is decorated in a cool/hip way. There are definitely, however, better places to have ice cream/"gelato" in Newport.

My husband and I moved to Newport a few weeks ago and have been out and about walking the dog every night. Cold Fusion is our evening splurge... It is sooo good we just can't say no! They don't mind us bringing our dog in to order and they even give him a little vanilla. We absolutely love the selection of favors and service. If you've read my review before... The kiddie size is back!!! No complaints about this place! The gelato is amazing and can't be beat for ice cream and gelato lovers! And if you plan to be in town for a bit, get their frequent buyers card! It's well worth it! Lastly, the staff is always smiling and accommodating! This is a Newport Must!!

I love gelato and my gelato machine is one of my most used kitchen appliances. However, this was not great gelato. I chose the Belgian chocolate, chocolate hazelnut, and blackberry merlot. I tried the rum raison (not enough punch) and candied ginger (had a strange artificial flavour). The Belgian chocolate had great flavour but also had that yucky film on it from being in the fridge too long in addition to having that fridge smell and taste. It was, honestly, kind of gross. The chocolate hazelnut needed more nutty flavour. The blackberry merlot had ice crystals in it and didn't rival the blackberry cabernet from Ciao Bella in flavour. I think the flavours are mostly there. They just need to work on texture and freshness. That film on the Belgian chocolate was frankly gross and was enough of a turn off that I wanted to send it back but I was already in my car and down the street. I won't return.

Every year when I visit Newport for a week, I plan to eat gelato here every day. I've never accomplished that, but I did stop by three times this past week and enjoyed myself immensely. It is, over all, excellent gelato. Individual taste being what it is, your experience at Cold Fusion will primarily depend on how much you enjoy the flavor of what you have chosen. This, however, should not be a problem, as the super friendly staff is happy - happy - to give you as many free spoonfuls as you care or dare to request. So, Fiore di Latte and Cheesecake were not to my liking; too sweet for me. Chocolate Vanilla tasted like plain old chocolate to me. No problem... why don't you taste Caramel, or Green Tea, or Cherry Chocolate Chip or Rum Raisin or Lemon Creme... or... or... Yeah, half rum raisin and half Madagascar Vanilla. Awesome. If you can't find a flavor or two that you love, me thinks you don't actually like gelato. The flavors change daily, or perhaps even more frequently as it is made by hand in small batches, right in town. This means that some people are delighted to find something new to try each day. Others are sad to find that their favorite is not available on a particular day. Me? I've never had a problem finding something... awesome. Why not 5 stars? Two reasons: it is very expensive, with a small dish running $4.25 with tax (and how can you not tip people this pleasant and enthusiastic?) So basically $5 bucks a pop for a little dish of heaven. And, they seem to have a chronic issue with keeping the stuff cold enough. This year, the A/C is shot and they're waiting for parts, but truth is, I've been getting intermittently soupy stuff from this place since they first opened. Of course, that doesn't stop me from coming back, and back, and back.

Great selection of gelato- lots of flavors. My favorite are the hazelnut, chocolate, and peanut butter (especially mixed together!). They give you alot for the price too. They just started selling this stuff at Whole Foods too. Note that its Cash Only at the Newport location. ooo and their sorbetto is really good too :)

What a great story: former Wall Street exec leaves the world of finance to start his own business selling homemade gelato and sorbets. Sells them to tourists during the season and shuts down the shop to work with local restaurants and develop new flavors during the winter. If only Bernie Madoff had followed in this guy's footsteps. I would have gladly invested in this place, told all my friends to invest, developed diabetes eating all the stuff, and then thanked him on my way to the pearly gates. I tried the wild berry and blood orange sorbet. BF tried the cake batter and oreo gelatos. The wild berry was very good; the blood orange was a bit more subtle. I have a feeling you'd want to test a few before making your choice. But the cake batter gelato was outstanding- literally tasted like fresh cake and frosting. The person helping us seemed seriously happy to be there in a "YAY FOR YOU EATING THIS AWESOME GELATO" kinda way. Definitely check it out next time you're in Newport.

I was born and raised in Italy and this is the first time I had cold fusion Gelato. I must say so far it has come the closest to the real thing that I had tryed alse where. The hazel nut is the exact thing that I had from the motherland

My fiancé and I stopped in and had a nice experience. We are vegan, so we opted for sorbet, and I was pleased to see more than just one flavor. They had 6 flavors we could enjoy, which was nice. The girl even made sure we didn't have extreme allergies, since sometimes spoons cross contaminate. We had the raspberry chip and blood orange, which was very refreshing on a hot day. Cute place, nice service. Not sure what more people are looking for. It's not a trendy shop in Italy, nor should new england tourists expect it to be.

Yum! Its a cute place and service was super friendly. Staff are young college kids. We got to sample almost all the flavors! Price was reasonable. I've paid a lot more for gelatos at other places. I got the Madagascar Vanilla gelato and Mango berry sorbet. I wanted to be bad and good at the same time ;0) It was gone in like 10 minutes! My friends got the early grey tea infuse and cake batter gelato. The other one got hazelnut (double yum) and vanilla too! We were all satisfied with our purchase :0) I like it too b/c it's not on the main strip of the shopping/food area. It's a little bit further (few block) from the hustle and bustle of the main road.

Dakota Fanning was here. At least, that is what the gelato artists suspect, based on a recent sighting (she came in and ordered a milkshake and realized it was cash only -- the horror! and dashed out the door...)...And frankly, if this gelateria is good enough for Kotes, then it's good enough for me. I think the flavor medley and taste quality are excellent. The cheerful decore is befitting of the resorty happy vacationland. The cheery disposition of the gelato artists was befitting of the decore. On the cycle churned round and round in a cheery circular motion! Those of us in our family who are not on the mama milk diet loved the raspberry (tangy! tart! tart! tangy!) flava of sorbet, and the peanut butter and chocolate flavors of the gelato. Coconut was tasty gelato, as well. I'm not going to prattle on about the flavors, though, because that will get me salivating and feeling all sorts of sorry for Dakota who apparently doesn't carry cash and therefore can't partake of the cold fusion.

  • Noreen G.

Good treat on a warm day! Not the best gelato I've ever had, but definitely milky and tasty.

I give this place 4 1/2 stars. Only because it is the third best gelato I have had in my life. (First is Mondo Gelato in San Diego and then a place in Phoenix). I love their sorbets so much but their gelatos are so good too. I'm sad they close for the winter.

DELICIOUS best gelato I have had this side if Italy!! You'll love this place. It's absolutely worth a try and the servers are patient and they will let you sample a few gelato until you get the perfect one for you while still keeping the line moving so you are not waiting in line. A great experience overall!

I love this place. The flavors are inventive and so far everything I've tried (Five Chinese Spices (*****), Passion Fruit Mango (*****), Cake Batter (***), Nut Brittle Something (***) was at least good or better. So fare my favorite is the Passionfruit Mango. As other reviewers have said it's a bit off the main strip, but well worth the trip.

They give you alot for the price too. i'm a gelato/ice-cream magnet, on the attracted end. was drawn in from across the street after dinner. although there weren't a huge myriad of flavors on display, there were enough to turn me into a kid in candy land. some of these flavors were VERY innovative too (ex. basil and curry, anyone?). was tempted to have a taste of a couple of the exotic flavors, but the place was too busy and i dared not hold them up. the line... i mean, there was no specific line, it seemed. got to order and stuck w/the mainstream stuff: cherry choco chip and choco strawberry. can't say either of them were memorable. just way too sweet and way too cold. i thought the gelato are supposed to be "warmer" than ice-cream, and while i prefer those on the colder and firmer side, this was a bit too cold. and i am speaking from a hot july/august night. i can't decide if $5 (was it more?) for those two-scoops is considered "inexpensive", or "moderate". probably somewhere in between.

So so so so so good! I'm pregnant and have to stop myself from eating this everyday. The variety of flavors is amazing and everything is homemade!

I'm not into the fluffy, crazy sugar-filled versions like 'cinnamon strawberry cheesecake bubblegum cotton candy cookie swirl'. rather, i prefer the sorbet types, and the mango still had pieces of mango in it. the orange tasted like a creamsicle and rocked as much as the mango. waiting with baited breath for a ny opening or else it's a 2 hour drive for dessert every night.

i'm a gelato/ice-cream magnet, on the attracted end. was drawn in from across the street after dinner. although there weren't a huge myriad of flavors on display, there were enough to turn me into a kid in candy land. some of these flavors were VERY innovative too (ex. basil and curry, anyone?). was tempted to have a taste of a couple of the exotic flavors, but the place was too busy and i dared not hold them up. the line... i mean, there was no specific line, it seemed. got to order and stuck w/the mainstream stuff: cherry choco chip and choco strawberry. can't say either of them were memorable. just way too sweet and way too cold. i thought the gelato are supposed to be "warmer" than ice-cream, and while i prefer those on the colder and firmer side, this was a bit too cold. and i am speaking from a hot july/august night. i can't decide if $5 (was it more?) for those two-scoops is considered "inexpensive", or "moderate". probably somewhere in between.
