I've stayed in enough B&B's to know that this is one of the top inns anywhere. It deserves all the accolades that I've read in the past year. Last year I came to Newport on business and vowed to bring my hubby back for a nice romantic weekend. We made good on those plans and spent Columbus Day weekend having a wonderfully restful and easy time. We had the Cliffside Suite which is four rooms two of which has a skylight. There is a fireplace that connects the sleeping and living room. So cool. There is a TV in the living, sleeping and sitting room. Very cool. We had tea. Superb! We probably could use one more day there. Newport is a great place. We were in walking distance to the famous mansions, the Cliffwalk is only steps away and 1/2 mile to the beach. I can't wait to go back. Of course there are other inns to try but my heart was stolen by Cliffside. Please give them a try.

Stayed here in 2004 for our 10th wedding anniversary. Excellent location away from the noise of the docks, yet convenient to see all of Newport. Expensive, but great service and accommodations.

Perfect in everyone way! My boyfriend and I celebrated our anniversary here last fall. The BB was very clean, very updated, and in the perfect location right near the Cliffwalk. Bill and Nancy are so nice and do everything to make your stay unforgettable. We stayed in the Blue Room and loved it- but every room seems great! We will def. be back!

If a picture is worth a 1000 words, I'm posting as many as I can so you can really get the feel of this remarkable Inn. In one word...GO! Choosing any other place in Newport for your stay is settling for 2nd best, at best. I'll keep this short & sweet b/c the only reason you really read the reviews is to see if you should book a stay. Book NOW! Celebrating a belated St. Valentine's Day on 2/23-2/25, every moment was special...from check in to check out. The keepers graciously allowed us to book a different suite for each night of our stay, to experience both romantic rooms (The Tower Suite & The Carriage House). Everything was set to perfection upon entering...the cleanliness, antique decor, fresh cut flowers, classical music, fireplace, swan towels, toilet paper folded perfectly to a point, the plush Italian Mascioni Hotel Collection robes...and that was just the room. Booking those 2 specific suites gave us the romantic privacy we hoped for with their private entrances, but we also had an opportunity to enjoy the common areas inside the main Inn with other guests (Hi Orlando & Noemi, Joe & Allison!) Don't waste your time searching & reading about all the other places to stay unless the only requirement you have is a pool. There is no pool at the Inn, but the 2 man whirlpool spa tubs are a nice substitute after having fun around Newport. Please be sure to look at the photos I've attached for our rooms & the common areas. I took them with future guests in mind so y'all can get a good sense of the property & why it's worth every! single! penny! You're worth it as a couple & you'll leave with wonderful memories of each other! Thank you Nancy & Bill for making our snowy February stay so warm, inviting & delicious!

My wife and I stayed here for here for a short getaway in the beginning of the week in April. She found it listed as number one B&B on tripadvisor and, after doing some more research, booked it. We were not disappointed. The house itself was very beautiful and in line with the feel of Newport itself. It is situated half a block from the cliff walk and just a few blocks from the beach. We stayed in the Tower Suite. It had a private driveway and entrance. It was two stories high with a big bathroom on the first floor. It had a large shower with two showerheads and a Jacuzzi for two, which also had a shower head. The room itself was octagonal with a high turret and windows that faced the aby/beach and filled the room with light. The view was beautiful. There was a fill place by the sitting area right by the windows where my wife and I would drink wine and relax. We always come back to a clean room. In the evening, we would always look forward to the delicious homemade cookies we found nightly (Bill offered the recipe). Breakfast consisted of delicious muffins, fruits and berries, yogurt, individual french press coffee, and choice of the specialty of the day or eggs however you like. Nightly, there was a wine and cheese hour where we would meet the other travelers and hear about their experiences in Newport. The last night there, we were the only guests Bill and Nancy had. They offered to make us our own cheese and meat board with grapes and crackers with a bottle of wine for ourselves. We gladly accepted. Bill and Nancy were both very nice people with an obvious and genuine love for what it is that they do. They are very knowledgeable of the area and its history and are just great to talk to. Bill recommended a scenic drive that he drew on a map for us that was fantastic. The staff was equally as friendly as the owners. The food recommendations were spot on and Bill even gave us advice on parking in town, which is just a short ride away. They even have a cute friendly dog named Cody that we great su when we came in the back entrance. Newport itself is a really nice place to visit. Great food and drinks, lots of history and old buildings, lots of shops for my wife, beautiful ocean views, and the mansions are incredible. They are like walking in beautiful museums of architecture and art. Far exceeded my expectations. I'd recommended the Cliffside Inn to anybody planning on visiting Newport. With such great people, food, service, and location, it's no wonder its rated number one.

What an amazing and wonderful experience it was to stay at the Cliffside Inn. The people: Bill and his staff have magnificently perfected their skills at making a guest feel at home. They are extremely polite, charming and welcoming. We arrived in the afternoon, and as soon as we entered the Cliffside Inn we were greeted immediately, our bags were taken off our shoulders, given a quick tour of the house, shown a map of the surrounding areas and all the attractions we should take part of. Everyone was amazing and it shows that they love what they do. The location: We have only amazing things to talk about the Tower Suite we rented for the night. It has a separate entrance and its own parking. The first floor is where you'll find the beautiful bathroom. It has everything you may need; shower cap, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, makeup remover towelette, and all Aveda products! This is the first location I've encountered which carries these amazing products. The second floor is beautiful as well. There's a fireplace and really comfortable queen size bed; we slept like babies. The entire house is quiet and amazing to just relax and unwind. There's a TV with local channels available as well as a private whirlpool tub. The room was extremely clean! The ocean view from the room was spectacular. The experience: Very intimate. It's definitely for couples looking for a romantic 1 or 2-day stay. Everything is so nicely decorated and charming. The Cliffside Inn is very fancy without trying too much. They also have a great wine selection. The breakfast: Offered in the mornings from 8:00 until 10:00 AM. They rotate their specials. During our stay, their special was pumpkin with pecans french toast and bacon. They also do offer coffee, cereal, muffins, juices, and if you don't want their french toast, they could change it to eggs made to your liking. Overall: I would URGE everyone to stay at the Cliffside Inn. Highly recommended.

My sister and I stayed here a few months ago - it was her second time and my first, but we already booked again for the fall. Nancy, Bill, and all their staff were truly wonderful and made us feel so st home. The breakfast is delicious and the cookies they leave by your bed at night are sooooo good. I highly recommend the Cliffside Inn to anyone planning a trip to Newport - the location can't be beat!

Recently, my wife and I stayed at The Cliffside. We hadn't stayed there since the new owners bought the inn. They did a great job refurbishing the inn. Pryor to their buying the inn, we had stayed there before their purchase and found the inn to be in need of repairs and updating. Well, the inn looks fantastic. It just has to be the best and nicest place to stay in Newport. While we were there, being the off season and not being busy, Nancy sat with us in the library for about 45 minutes before we went to Restaurant Bouchard for dinner. That was very special. But, we found Bill and Nancy to be great hosts. Our room was excellent and breakfast was fresh and tasty. Can't wait to go back.

There is a reason why the Cliffside Inn sits on top of the list of Newport Bed & Breakfasts. We spent 2 nights here in the midst of a February snowstorm. The hospitality shown to us by Inn owners, Bill and Nancy is truly outstanding. It's all about the little things like helping with my bags at checkout knowing my shoulder is hurt based on a comment I made at checkin several days earlier, cooking a special breakfast for my partner with her food allergies and telling us all about the history of the house. The service here is THE BEST without even mentioning how great the accommodations are, and they are wonderful!! We stayed in a 3rd floor suite called St. George's. The room was warm, clean and tastefully decorated with a view of the ocean and Eastons beach. The Inn is right next to the famous Cliff Walk and mansions are less than a mile away. Bill said the 3 headed shower in our suite is the biggest in Newport. We have no reason to doubt him...There was a nightly turndown service, fresh ice nightly and a bountiful wine list To choose from for in room delivery. My sweetheart and I can't wait to go back again.

1st rate all the way around, it's so nice to get what you expect and deal with warm, charming professionals. While passing thru Newport, stayed 2 nights for our wedding anniversary, stayed in 'The Loft.' A little small, but we knew it would be going in because it was on the top floor, and it didn't matter because the quality was there and we're suckers for skylights. Comfortable furnishings, great bedding, huge whirlpool tub, super-clean, outstanding location just a block from The Cliffwalk,' excellent breakfast, run by some really nice people who get that it's a hospitality industry. Yes, it's a little pricey overall, but not for the Newport area and the value is there. It may be years before we get back to Newport again, but I wouldn't even think of staying elsewhere unless The Cliffside was booked solid (and even then, I'd still try to negotiate a sofa...)

We spent a wonderfully relaxing weekend in the Carriage House at the Cliffside Inn. We checked in late and our room had been turned down with homemade chocolate dipped cookies on the bedside table. It was a lovely treat after a long drive! The room was immaculately clean, the bed and linens were beyond comfortable and the whirpool tub - perfect. The towels were so soft, there were Aveda bath products available and, as someone who wears a bit of eye makeup, I appreciated the makeup remover cloth and special dark towel. A great touch! Our room included beautiful period furniture piece and gas fireplace and beautiful ocean views. The inn has grounds that are even lovely in the dead of winter. There is a beautiful fire pit that they light each evening, which I'm sure is spectacular in the warmer months. The inn really is steps from the Cliff Walk. Our breakfasts were delicious and varied. On our first day we had lemon ricotta pancakes with fresh blueberry sauce and on our second we had breakfast quesadillas with fresh pico. Delicious. We also enjoyed the wine hour, which featured delicious appetizers and also had Guinness for the holiday weekend. The staff was so friendly and attentive. They made great recommendations for things to do that avoided the St. Paddy's festivities (per our request). They remembered where we had dinner the night before and asked how it was - little things that just make you feel welcome. We will absolutely be back to the Cliffside Inn!

The Cliffside Inn and it's new owners, Nancy and Bill, epitomize the bed & breakfast experience of getting away to a place that, in another life, you'd love to call home. The pictures on the website speak for themselves, so I'll just cover the home and rooms by saying they blend classic Newport elegance and modern day luxuries. We visited on a particularly cold winter weekend, but the inn always felt warm and inviting, with the crackle of a fire in every room, and the smell of all kinds of gourmet treats constantly wafting from the kitchen. Each morning starts with a more-than-generous breakfast, with options ranging from homemade baked goods and granola, to a variety of freshly prepared entrees like crab cake eggs benedict or pear and cranberry pancakes. The coffee and tea are local blends, which is just another seemingly insignificant but ultimately charming detail to which Nancy and Bill pay attention in an effort to immerse their guests in the Newport experience. Guests can return later in the day for tea and hors d'oeuvers in the living room. This late afternoon tradition may be common at some b&b's, but is certainly not done as well as at Cliffside. The offerings seem endless, and can change with the request of a guest, or the inspiration of the inn keepers. The night time turn down service just caps off the personal touch Nancy and Bill bring to Cliffside, with the blinds drawn and a small treat like a chocolate-dipped cookie waiting bedside. The Cliffside Inn is a magnificent place to call home for a few days, where you can check your real life at the door, and fall seamlessly into the care of inn keepers who embody the mantra of "we aim to please", and have a home that is a direct extension of this philosophy. I don't mean to gush, but I believe that superior service deserves equal recognition, and Nancy, Bill and the Cliffside Inn provide a truly remarkable experience. I can't imagine staying anywhere else on our next visit to Newport.

I had the most amazing experience at the Inn. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. I felt like I was at home. Our room was amazing as well. It was so comfy and cozy. I loved that it was right near the cliff walk even though it was freezing out. I would defiantly stay here again. My boyfriend and I needed a nice romantic getaway and it was delivered. I also liked that breakfast was included. That was very yummy. They have a great cook!!

Decided to try Newport RI for my 25th wedding anniversary. Words can not describe how we loved the Cliffside Inn Nancy and Bill were a delight, the house was incredible. The decor kept with the age of the home, but with all the modern day luxuries. We stayed in the Grosvenor Suit The bathroom was recently remolded INCREDIBLE !!! They offer different packages for special occasions, we opted for the Romance package. It included a bottle of champagne, a dozen roses, chocolate dipped strawberries, and truffles. It was an extra cost, but for the small amount they charged. It was worth it !!! Our last night there, they covered our bed with rose pedals and a Happy Anniversary sign. They went out of the way to make gluten free breakfast for me. Oh !!! And at 5pm It's wine time. Even made me gluten free snacks. I fell in love with Newport, but more with the Cliffside Inn. Thank you, Nancy and Bill ! Love Anthony and Lori Mergola

I am an avid traveler and consumer of TripAdvisor content. Although I rarely provide feedback, I thought I would give back to the TripAdvisor community today and submit some highlights and lowlights from last year's stay at Cliffside Inn in Newport RI. That said, as I sit here at my laptop having unpacked my bags and loaded my pictures on to Facebook, I must admit that I have ABSOLUTELY nothing to report back in way of "lowlights"... so ... what I will attempt to do here is to simply state the facts without the hard sell in hopes of still being able to add some nominal value to your search. FACT #1: Cliffside Inn is VERY clean and VERY new (I believe it was renovated in 2010) yet it is warm and inviting and retains the wonderful colonial charm you would expect of a Newport Bed & Breakfast. FACT #2: Nancy and Bill (the owners) are kind, respectful, and honest people living out their dream of providing Newport locals and visitors alike with a top-notch B&B experience. Simply put, they care about their guests and will strive to exceed expectations. Nancy's thoughtful recommendations including the Cliff Walk and Ocean Drive at sunset, MADE OUR TRIP. Nancy also made last minute reservations for my fiancé and me at Tallulah on Thames, one of Newport's famed restaurants (thanks again, Nancy). FACT #3: Cliffside Inn's wonderfully landscaped backyard is just footsteps away from the start of the famed Cliff Walk (a must see). Cliffside Inn is also a short drive from Thames Street (a hot spot for restaurants, bars, shopping, etc) and an even shorter drive (3-4min) from the start of Ocean Drive and many of the famed Newport Mansions (additional must sees). FACT #4: The room (I can only speak for the "Tower Suite") was PERFECT. "Perfect" as defined by SUPER clean with modern amenities and tastefully elegant colonial décor. It is a two floor lighthouse-like tower with the restroom on the 1st floor. The restroom is massive and includes a HUGE jacuzzi for two plus a separate full sized stand-up shower stall. The bedroom, which is upstairs, is quaint yet elegant and features high ceilings and a wall of bay windows overlooking tree tops and a partial view of the ocean (beautiful and serene). FACT #5: A bonfire is lit at sunset for guests to enjoy. Additionally, hors d'oeuvres and light refreshments are served upon arrival and breakfast is served in the mornings (we missed breakfast unfortunately but the strawberry cream cheese muffins Nancy saved for us were darn good). All in all, our stay at Cliffside Inn was nothing short of amazing. I would strongly recommend Cliffside Inn to anyone, especially no frills couples in search of a quiet romantic weekend getaway. My fiancé and I are ecstatic that we found the inn and hope to return regularly. Thank you TripAdvisor community (and Nancy, Bill & "T") for making our visit to Newport so wonderful! See you again soon!

Cute b&b that's close to the water/cliff walk, but pricey for what they offer. They offered the same 4 breakfast options for both the Saturday and Sunday I was there. The have "high tea" for an hour in the afternoon, which wasn't too veggie friendly and wasn't very good. Disappointed in the food here, but location is good. We stayed in the St. George's room which was tiny and expensive! I think it's worth splurging and staying at the Chanler instead, or finding a better deal.

Bill and Nancy have done an outstanding job capturing the charm of a New England bed and breakfast. From the moment we arrived (late!), we felt welcomed by Bill, Nancy, and of course, Cody. Having stayed at many highly rated establishments, we can say we were delighted with the amenities and character of the Cliffside. This is a guaranteed five star bed and breakfast and will stay on the select registry for years to come. Our accommodations were well appointed and the decor outstanding down to the finest detail, from the in-room fireplace, the jacuzzi for two, the chandeliers, door handles, moldings and the pull chain toilet in the foyer . When they heard that we were celebrating our anniversary, we returned to our room to find rose petals in the shape of a heart on our bed. Breakfast and afternoon tea in front of the fireplace were highlights of our stay. The food was outstanding, especially the tangerine muffins. While it was a snowy weekend, one of the only one we've had this winter, we did make it down to the cliff walk, only a short way down the road, where people were cross country skiing. We highly recommend the Cliffside and look forward to returning in the near future. Perfect for a romantic weekend getaway!

Nice amenities especially their breakfast and afternoon tea. The house and rooms are really WARM (near suffocating - had to open the windows for some air circulation) and that's coming from someone who likes to crank up the heat. A fireplace in every room makes it very romantic! It's also a nice and very short walk to Newport, R.I.'s famous "Cliffwalk" which wraps around the outer edges of their historical mansions overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

Between health scares and personal issues there was no rest to be found for a weary soul in the metro Boston area. I knew I had to escape. It was then that Fortuna, a weekend cancellation, and a forfeited deposit afforded me the opportunity to seek R&R at the Cliffside Inn in scenic Newport Rhode Island. The Cliffside was an idyllic escape. Located just steps from the historic Cliff Walk and not far from the beach, this inn offered just the retreat I needed. Each room in this historic B&B was different and my room (the library room) was so comfy and cozy that I hardly wanted to leave to explore the rest of Newport. At the Cliffside, high tea is served at 4PM. Little tea sandwiches are served along with savory and sweet treats and of course tea. Breakfast on the front patio was delightful and there was the slightest view of the ocean. My only complaint is that the television was SO SMALL. Otherwise, a great place to go for relaxation.

A romantic B&B located right next to the historic Cliff Walk in Newport, RI and Eastman's Beach. Each room is different, it's hard to have a favorite. With gormet cofee and tea service delivered to your room each morning, it's hard to convince yourself to leave the room. The 2 person jacuzzi tub was spacious and marble shower luxurious. Have breakfast on the front veranda and ask for a picnic lunch to go. Inkeeper Stephen Nichols will take care of your every whim. A definite favorite.
