While large, the burrito was unflavorful. On the other hand, the service was fast and attentive and the bathroom was (surprisingly) clean. Maybe I just picked the wrong toppings and salsa. I wouldn't go out of your way to eat here, but if you are starving while shopping at the nearby grocery store or Walmart, it's one of the more healthy fast food options available. Bottom line: you get what you pay for and nothing more.

Pathetic. The food is ridiculously over priced and subpar at best. I ordered a burrito, which I was very disappointed to find out how small it was for $7. It was disgusting. It was gritty and absolutely terrible. Also ordered chips and cheese dip, the chips were stale and the "cheese dip" taste like cream cheese. Got a side of "salsa" that was more like pico de gallo. The "cheese dip" and "salsa" were in tiny little cups, not nearly enough to eat with a bag of chips. I will NEVER eat at a Cilantro again. What a waste of $35, including the meal my husband ordered. Taco Bell tastes better than this!!!! DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY AT THIS PLACE.

So as a little birdy might have told you I love Cilantro's. We were heading to Newport beach this past weekend and we were starving. I came to my senses and remembered a little conversation that one of the girls that works in the Providence location told me that they just opened up a new branch in Newport! YAHTZEEE! It ended up being perfect, 10 min from the beach. The food was SUPER fresh and even better news is that they didn't measure anything with a spoon like they do in the downtown Providence location! Our plates were super full. We even had leftovers for the beach. I read a previous review stating that this place wasn't clean and I would have to disagree. Eating in dirty places creeps me out, and this place was very clean. Our table, floors, bathrooms and most importantly the serving station was SUPER clean. I would have to say this is my favorite location so far. The only reason why I didn't give it 5 stars was because I am so used to the old prices from a couple of years ago. The prices have increased quite a bit. I guess that's what happened when demand goes up.

Big burritos, good burritos. Try the curry chicken. You can't beat the price here and a customized burrito is always nice. There's not much more to say about it.

Cilantro Grill is a copy-cat of Chipotle. But that's cool with me, because Chipotle is awesome! They have the exact same serving/ordering line and all the same exact ingredients. It's fresh, fast and cheap. For more info on Cilantro Grill :see Chipotle. Nothing much more to say, other than, one time I was here and I saw a pretty lame attempt at a protest when Bush was coming through by here. It was like 10 unorganized people milling about trying to chant, but lacking the rhythm to do so.

Delicious. Choose from burrito, tacos or quesadillas, with 3 or 4 types of meat, 2 types of beans, plus all the rest. I ordered the hard tacos, which come as a set of four. You can mix it up, as i got two chicken, one pork and one steak. It was very filling for lunch. Military discount after 4pm.

Went on a Monday night for a quick burrito bowl. Service was fast and the ingredients were very fresh. It was take out and the service was friendly and made sure everything was well attended to. Got the brown rice, adobo grilled chicken and guacamole bowl with other fixings in there. Yummy and spicy

This place is almost identical to Chipotle. I ordered the soft taco entree with spicy steak. The meat is definitely spicy. It was very good. I would come back for the tacos.

This place is great when you're looking for something quick, delicious, and satisfying. He portions are more than enough, I usually order the salad when I'm in town. The price is great for the grand portions given.

Yummy, quick, and satisfying. Love that Cilantro offers delivery, it's so convenient on days we need to order lunch at the office. I always go for the deconstructed burrito bowl. Good portions, low price, and very filling.

I cannot believe how filthy this place was. Every table was dirty the floor disgusting and every employee of in the kitchen somewhere. The line where food was located so gross I left before placing an order. If the board of health walked in it would closed down. Stay away

This small fast-foodish sorta-Mexican place is similar in Chipotle in the style of assembly line they do for making your burrito (or tacos or...). They advertise they use fresh local produce - thumbs up for that. It's not a clean or as franchise-ish in appearance as a Chipotle though. I had a steak burrito. It was pretty good. There was more fat and grissle in the steak than I would have liked, but I pulled those pieces out and tossed them back in my basket. The guacamole tasted fresh. Service was friendly and professional. Price was pretty reasonable (a little higher than I usually pay at Chipotle, but I'm willing to pay a little extra if it's for fresh local produce). Overall, not bad. I would be happy to go back here and have another burrito. (Maybe not the steak next time).

This place means well, seems like it's going for that Chipotle/Qdoba fast food experience. I like that theres a choice of tortilla, can't recall any place that does off-hand. Had the grilled chicken burrito, it was good, not great. Definitely spoiled by the other burrito locations in the surrounding areas. For what's it's worth, it's a good take-out experience if you don't have time to sit down. It's priced around those you'd see at a chain burrito place. They do their best with their service though. Also, they have various discounts and deals so it's worth a shot.

We flew into Providence and it was already hours past lunch but we decided to push forward and eat once we were in Newport. By the time we were in Newport I was starving! So we ate at basically the first place that looked good and by good, I mean fast! I got a steak burrito and it was really amazing. Had I not been so hungry the burrito would have probably just been really good and maybe not amazing! All the ingredients were really fresh. The price seemed to be about the same as a Qdoba or chipotle pricing so you are looking at like a $7 burrito. My mother had to the tacos which she also really enjoyed. It will be interesting to see if this little Rhode Island chain makes it to some more states.

Since I'm vegan by choice and gluten-free by necessity, I generally find Mexican food is not an option. Most authentic places cook with animal fat, and it's hard to order a burrito without a flour tortilla or animal fat. I might as well ask for a bowl of iceberg lettuce and some salsa. I can eat that, but that's not worth a trip to a restaurant or food truck. So, while some people give this place low reviews, those people are not among those of us with dietary limitations who sometimes benefit from eating at chain establishments, since they have gluten-free and vegan options available. (You may have to check their website first to find out about the vegan options, but they have info about the gluten-free stuff in the store, on the bulletin board.) I order their 'belly bowl', which is all the joy of a burrito, but without a shell, in a bowl. I love it. Sure, I could reproduce that at home, but who is going to go through the trouble of preparing 20 different ingredients the way that Cilantro does? Bonus: their tortilla chips and guac are vegan and gluten-free, AND the chips are not fried in oil used for frying anything with flour. So I can eat those! So, yes, this is not the most authentic place ever. However, it's one where I can eat, and the food is damned tasty, the portions are huge, and it's all fresh and wonderful. And cheap to boot!

I eat here more than twice a week, and I must say the staff is superb. They make my order before I even am stuck in the long line! They never fail to impress me! When you go try a belly bowl, they're just everything you want, in a bowl!

I gave it four stars because I have a good and a bad encounter with this restaurant. I attempted to order delivery and unfortunately, the website is not up to date with the restaurant itself. After my delivery process was completed and confirmed, the store called me and told me that delivery was not available on a Sunday. The order was canceled and I was told I would be receiving a refund. When I called them back after a missed call, the associate on the phone was very rude. I wish I had asked her name. Anyway, long story short, the G.M. Matt was the best and easiest manager I had ever encountered. Not only was he very helpful in giving me my refund right away, he was very nice and generous on the phone. There needs to be more managers like him everywhere and he deserves to be in a superior position. The 4 stars is for him and the 1 missing star is for that rude associate.

May 23, 2014 In the latest edition of "Laura's Lunch," I decided to take myself to Cilantro Mexican Grill, which is located just down the street from my office. The reason I was all hopped up on the thought of Mexican food was because on Wednesday people from my office were eating it. Being the suggestive eater that I am, I decided that I absolutely needed to have Mexican food as soon as possible. I called in my order mainly because I'm lazy and hate waiting for things. I ordered a large quesadilla on a smoked pepper tortilla with barbecue chicken, sautéed onions and peppers, pico de gallo, cheese and sour cream ($7.55). Since my order wasn't nearing my personal $10 maximum to spend, I decided to throw in a small bag of chips and salsa ($1.50). I was quoted a total of $8.62 and told that it would only take five minutes for my order to be ready. I headed down the street and pulled into a parking space. Of course, since I never ever look down, I stepped right into a huge puddle. Dragging my soaking wet foot inside, I saw that my quesadilla was being packed up. "Perfect timing," said the guy behind the register. A girl began to cash me out and asked me if I wanted chips and salsa. I told her yes (and wondered why she was asking since I had ordered it over the phone). She then quoted me a total of $9.16. I asked why and she told me that the phone dude never added in my chips and salsa. These chips and cup of salsa were starting to be a pain in the butt, but I had no idea what was to come. I cashed out and she asked me if I wanted a bag to put my chips and salsa in (the chips were in a small paper bag and the salsa in a small plastic cup). I said no because I had every intention of balancing the chips and salsa on top of the quesadilla box all the way back to work. Mind you, I have never balanced anything in my life. I pulled into the office parking lot, carefully balancing the chips and salsa on top of the quesadilla box until I reached the employee entrance. A man I'd never seen before let me in. I thanked him and took a sharp left around the corner and that's when it happened. I dropped the salsa onto the rug in the hallway. The cup of salsa overturned and made a SPLAT sound like someone dropped a watermelon off the top of a building. It was absolutely disgusting. What made matters worse is that it made the rug look like something out of a crime scene. The unknown guy behind me just froze ... and then started laughing. Due to the way the salsa fell, the cover was still a bit underneath the container. The laughing man did his best to slide the cover back under the salsa, flip the cup and then handed it back to me. I ran to the break room to retrieve napkins, but he found them faster and scooped up the salsa for me. What a gentleman! As flattered as I was, I never wanted to see this person again since I was horribly embarrassed, but as it turns out he works in the same department I do. He works the night shift so I never see him. Awkward! As he left the office he said, "Enjoy your lunch," and then started laughing again. Alright, back to business. There were a few more inconveniences that took place (no utensils, I forgot to get a drink, I couldn't find napkins, etc.), but on the whole the food was "meh." I really enjoy Mexican food and on this Friday-that-had-the-appeal-of-a-Monday, I wanted something awesome. The chips actually had a weird taste to them. I don't know what it was, but my guess is that there was either too much salt or they were too greasy. Either way, something was up. As for the salsa - yes, the floor salsa which I actually consumed - it was just ok. Perhaps it would have been better if it hadn't been scooped off the carpet outside of the men's room. I got the "medium" version and I will say that it had a medium amount of heat. The quesadilla was a really good size, but I wasn't wowed by the flavor. The veggies inside made everything gloppy and for some reason the quesadilla was lava hot. I know that it was freshly made, but the foil surrounding it definitely did its job of keeping in the heat. Because of this, the sour cream melted and disappeared, leaving none of its awesome flavor behind. The most flavorful ingredient was the barbecue chicken, which was cooked perfectly but the taste overpowered everything else. Minutes from the office: One. Cost of the meal with drink: $9.16 for the misquoted meal and $1 for a soda from the office machine. Will I go back? Yes. I definitely want to give this place another shot. My meal was good and for the amount of food I got, the price was appropriate. It was my own clumsy fault for destroying the salsa, so I'll try and be more careful on my next visit. Bad customer service!!! While I was in line, the cashier kept chatting with this military dude even after he got his order and did not even look at us who were waiting in line! Nachos were stale and the burrito was cold.

Trash...I'm from Texas so i have fairly high burrito standards and cilantro's just wasn't up to the task. Like others have said, my burrito was extra cold. Nothing was warm. Plus, even with 'spicy' salsa and extra jalapenos there was zero spice. Took about half a bottle of cholula chipotle to fix that. Realized a couple bites in that I had missed the queso and perhaps that would help the situation. Went back to get a side of queso and received some sort of grainy gravy-like substance. Literally the worst queso ever. Cilantro's worked in a pinch to quell my burrito craving but even taco bell is better than this.

I probably won't go back. The place was filthy. Every table in the there was dirty and the floor was disgusting. The girl behind the counter didn't give 2 s*+ts about what we wanted. The chips we stale and the rice not cooked. Took one bite and left. Very disappointing seeing I love Mexican and there's no other place like that in the island. Oh well off my list..

This place is crap. Seriously, go eat ANYWHERE ELSE. There's a 7-11 across the street where you can get a hot dog, You should do that before you eat here. I realize you might think I am indulging in hyperbole, so let me be completely clear - this place prepares actual garbage and "serves" it to you on little plastic baskets, and you are invited to eat your "meal" in a grimy, barren dining room with your plastic fork and knife. The food is horrible and would be overpriced even if it was decent. Staff is ugly in every way imaginable. The whole place is filthy. I would call and ask for my $10 back but I'm sure they wouldn't give a rat's ass about my complaint. Hell, they probably need all the rat ass they can get for their disgusting little buffet of crap.

I'm a local that loves mexican food. I've been here many times but I've finally had to give up. It's never very clean, but the kitchen area by and large seems sanitary. The problem to me is the staff turn over and lack of training. Over the years the staff turn over has increased in frequency. The last time I was in the woman began to make my quesadilla and started to put the filling in by her gloved hand - no spoon, just digging into the toppings and smearing them into my dinner. I had to walk out and haven't been back. Another time I could see that the guacamole was really old looking - grey, dark brown around the edges. Instead of scrapping off that part, the server went right to that part and spread that on my quesadilla. I said something and he said "it's ok, that's just how guacamole is." I think I asked that they remake it without the guac. It's a bummer because the food is simple, generally fresh and priced well. Still don't go though. Better places in town.

Never again..... I was sick for 4 days after eating there. The cleanliness of that place was horrible. Food prep and cross contamination is not something that is known by the employees, because I asked one and she had no idea what I was talking about, as she took the meat spoon and scooped my chicken with it. Please please please STAY AWAY!

Stop by for the two for one deal. Buy one burrito and get one free (on certain days, for students and military). The burritos are tasty; however, they can be a bit spicy when least expected. Overall, good Mexican...for Rhode Island.

Yelp has my rating spot on: Cilantro is A-OK. Aquidneck Island is admittedly limited on places to get a delicious burrito. There is Tito's, El Grande, Diego's, and Sapo's Freaky Burrito - however all four of those restaurants lean towards sitting down for dinner. Cilantro fills the "fast food" convenience here. To be honest, Cilantro is just a knockoff of the popular chain Chipotle. I think that the people who work at the Newport location are really nice and are extremely generous with their food portions. I usually grab vegetarian burritos and unless I had a huge appetite that day, I barely finish my meal. I think their guacamole is pretty good too, to boot! Cilantro also has frequent customer cards with 10 punches getting you a free burrito, a big plus for all us burrito lovers out there. Given the choice and time I would pick Sapo's Freaky Burrito over Cilantro but since it's just so much easier to just run in, get a burrito and leave I often go to Cilantro's more.

Saturday Nite Rager in DA Cut U Wake uP neeDing to Get BURRITOFIED. In the sun, on the porch - it's a Jamestown sunday and you yawn and say lazily, "I really want Chipotle right now." Then you remember the few chances you've given Warwick Chipotle and their lame burritos with either under or over cooked rice and you sigh. Why can't it be California right now? Or New York? Nevermind. Task at hand: burrito-ville, population you. Mmmmm they are SO GOOD, and they are a perfect triple meal all rolled up in one. Best yet, it's portable! Portable, wrapped up, fun little fun. A bun of fun. I agree to go to Cilantro Grill because it's not far, and it'll give me a new thing to Yelp. The Goods: - 30 Min Door to Door from Jamestown (takeout) - Submissive/sullen yet attentive server (just the way I like 'em) - Options at the end to add in chopped jabeneros, fresh cilantro and a squeeze of lime - Grilled chicken is very good, just like at Chipotle - Guacamole is pretty creamy and fresh (though, $1.60 extra) - Chicken burrito deal $4.99 with a fountain drink - really can't be beat price-wise - Choice of tortilla: wheat, flour, tomato, spinach - Grilled onions add nice sweetness (though not much punch) and peppers too - Really effin big and cheap The Bads: - Our burritos were COLD! It was unfathomable. We couldn't figure out what the culprit was... did they freeze the lettuce? How the hell.... - I wouldn't want to eat inside there, it's kind of icky vibes - They're bland, overall. I'll endeavor to explain why/how this could be, here: ----- Rice is very buttery and not much cilantro flavor in it, could have more zing ----- Salsa - I can't even remember it: they need to offer an array of heat choices (like Chipotle!) so you're not stuck with icky bland tomatoes, need a green sauce option ----- Guacamole could be more lime-y It's NOT the "Best Burrito" (What was the Providence Phoenix thinking??) it's the ONLY burrito.... in Southern RI. Stay tuned for Hacienda Burrito de Jamestown, I see an unmet need and I'm dreaming up a business plan.

This place is great.. really tasty fresh ingredients and very low prices considering the portions.. basically Rhode Island's Chipotle knockoff. I hear they get all their ingredients locally which is cool. these taco nazis who ate a burrito in Austin once and now feel the need to tell the whole world their favorite spot isn't the "real thing" need to get off their taste bud high horses.. I've gone to lots of hyped Mexican places in TX and Southern CA and Cilantro holds it's own for what it is.. a small burrito chain in Rhode Island. I'd give it a 5/5 simply out of thanks for being the only real burrito I can get around here but the (over)staff(ed) is made up of a gnarly bunch of derelicts who seem like they completely loathe working. I don't know who's in charge of hiring but there's gotta be some better talent around. Besides that, highly recommended

Well, if this were San Diego then I'd say this place serves just about the worst burritos in town. But this is Rhode Island so by that standard the burritos aren't too bad. The burritos are a bit bland, the service is okay, the store is relatively clean. Prices are okay, not terribly expensive but not stupid-cheap either. Bottom line: If you immediately outside gate 1 and desperatly need a burrito at that moment, Cilantro's provides a passable option.

This place is not worth your time. My base is about 100 yards away from this joint, and I won't be going back. I called to place an order, and they told me I would have to pay by credit card. I asked if I could just go in and pay by cash, and the employee's response "if you can get here in the next 10 minutes" with a surly tone. The dining room was grimy and poorly decorated, the kitchen was dirty and appliances were akimbo, as if there had been a recent earthquake. The burritos tasted like rice and hot sauce. I could not taste (or see) the meat, and there was very little of anything else in there either. I have heard good things about Cilantro, and I may have simply had a bad experience but from now on when I want quick food near work I'll go to Bamboo.

One of the more confusing places I've been to. The food was good. No complaints. Similar to a Chipotle, Moes, or Baja Fresh. The vegetarian burrito and guacamole were both great and tasted very fresh and homemade. The inside of the restaurant, however, was terrible. There's a very obvious spelling mistake on the menu. The dining area has no decoration at all and has lots of open space where it seems strange that there are not more tables. When I went there, the floor was dirty with things that could have easily been picked up by an employee (plasticware, napkins)... and it wasn't busy enough to justify any level of uncleanliness. The garbage can was tiny AND over-flowing... trash had to be set on the counter next to it and it looked terrible. Overall, I would recommend this place to someone looking for a place to get a quick , fresh, inexpensive lunch.... just get it to go.

I like this place. It's simple, easy and reasonably priced. I also found it clean and organized well. The food is good but of course other reviewers might make the comparisons to the best burrito or taco they ever had to what they ate at Cilantros. As far as I am concerned that might be a bit unfair. This is not fine dining, but a healthy alternative to fast food.

Great service, fresh food, and amazing options. It never fails to disappoint my stomach and I'll keep going back 3-4 times a week as usual. A fantastic spot for a great, healthy lunch or even a fun quick dinner with the family.

We live just around the corner from this place. We just moved in a month ago. We have been there many times. The food is always fresh and delicious. Burritos, nachos and tacos is what you will get. We have always had outstanding service here, however Jessica has served us the last 3 times, and she does an excellent job. As mentioned, they do cater to military and college folks for discounts. $30 and you can feed a family of 6 plus drinks, without discount. Also, the place is always clean especially the serving line,as noted before (except for Carrie and I wonder when she went in there, it has always been clean when I've been there over the last 4 weeks.. Would suggest this place to anyone. Cilantro Mexican Grille might be an emulator, but if you want fresh delicious food for a good price, go there.

I ate here a few times for lunch, but didn't think it was anyplace special. At the same time, I heard from some friends how awesome this place called "Chipotle" was. After eating at a Chipotle once, I realized that this place is an imitator. Big burritos, fast and relatively cheap: that's all you really need to know.

If I wanted Chipotle, I would have to drive off the island and head west to one of the few restaurants (currently only two) in Warwick or Cranston 45 minutes away. Or drive north to Boston which can be over hour away. On the other hand, for a quasi-Chipotle experience here on the Island, Cilantro Grill is the best! The ingredients are fresh and the place is fairly clean and inviting. The portions are extremely generous especially when you order the bowl version san burrito wrap. When my wife was expecting and in labor she made me stop by Cilantro on the way to Newport Hospital so we can have a decent meal before the long wait in the delivery room. We checked in the hospital at 2pm and the baby was delivered by 10 PM. We were so glad that we had a nice hearty meal beforehand. (Baby was happy too) Cilantro offer numerous discounts for military personal and college students. The price is fairly reasonable for size of our meal.

Definitely below Chipotle, Qdoba, and Moe's but still pretty good. Service could have been a little quicker.

Great place to get a filling bite. The price is a little bit high but the ingredients are quality and the service is always fast. The chips they make for your side option are really good!

Pretty good burritos at the goin rate for such a thing. If you've been to chipotle then you've been to cilantro as well. Good stuff, nothing to write home about, but pretty solid nonetheless.

  • William B.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
