Pros: Fresh fish, a real nice good crisp to the Fish and Chips, super friendly service, and a sweet outdoor seating area for chillaxing in. Cons: Although everything was done very well, nothing was "Amazing" to push this restaurant to the "5" category. We left the restaurant very happy, but we weren't picking up the pieces of our shattered expectations. Bottom Line: It's good!

Just remodeled so it's a little better atmosphere but the food is the same. Ok pub grub nothing to write home about.

Excellent out door seating area. Yummy lobster, oysters and beer. They have entertainment on a schedule and karaoke (hard to find nowadays) that may be worth the drive. All in all- a good haul.

This was a disappointment. The menu looked great as did the reviews which is what brought our group to The Cove for drinks and dinner. While waiting for our table we ordered drinks which were entirely too strong and tasted as though they were made with the well liquor. We were seated next to a group of a dozen college aged kids who were drinking heavily and speaking incredibly loudly...certainly not an atmosphere for a nice dinner. When we asked about the outdoor seating we were told we could only sit there if we ordered fried food. That seemed strange to us and since not everyone wanted fried food we stayed put. Our table ordered a few different options: Fried Mussels: Tasted like they'd been frozen and thawed. Mushy and drenched in a cream sauce. Definitely NOT worth the $12 price tag. Fish and Chips and Strips: Exceedingly greasy even for fried fish. Certainly nothing you couldn't get cheaper (and fresher) from any number of fish shacks near the beach. "Rib Eye" Steak and Crab: This was a complete joke. The piece of meat served was certainly not a rib eye, it was a flank steak at best. 1/2" thick and gray all the way through despite having ordered it medium rare. The "Crab" on top of the steak looked like tuna salad and smelled the same. This dish was so bad it was sent back and nothing new was ordered. Service was just okay. Our waitress didn't go out of her way to make us feel welcome. All utensils were removed before our food arrived which was odd and delayed us from eating. I would skip this place. It might be fine if you're college aged and don't mind drinking lighter fluid cocktails and eating greasy OVERPRICED food. If you're looking for seafood and awesome service in the area try Matunuck Oyster Bar. Had we known The Cove would be so awful we would have gone back there.

I wanted more out of my meal. Like many others, I felt that food was "decent" "not amazing" and "ok pub grub." 3 diners - one big fan of the Portuguese stew, 1 "meh" on the crab and rib eye, and 1 "meh" on the burger and fries. That said, it was a long and varied menu if all you're looking for is feeding a crowd at the end of the beach day. I expected more out of the meal because the decor was so nice. Didn't see it before the remodel, but new decor mod and chic. 4 stars if the menu could also get an upgrade.

I have been to the Cove a few times and I have found it to be average at best. Last time I was in I split nachos with a friend and had the chicken philly cheese steak. The nachos lacked the generous amount of cheese and toppings offered at other south county establishments. The chicken philly was OK but I hoped it would be a little bit bigger. The beer was cold and that is important. The reason I gave 2 stars instead of 3 was the service at the bar. We found the bartender to be a little abrasive. Maybe we caught him on a bad night. The restaurant itself is in a great location, especially for tourists. The inside is pretty standard for an Americana beach-town restaurant. Nothing too special.

Food was yummy and very filling. Our waitress was as fast as lightening. Amazing. Definitely go there.

I've had a mixed series of meals here, usually all with decent services. My first lunch involved a mushy, earthy tasting crab cake sandwich. Most food is heavy and greasy, if appropriately priced. I also remember an oily bisque, but snappy sweet potato fries. So, a mixed series of meals, but an okay experience overall.

Decent food with responsive service. Had the Cajun swordfish sandwich with a side of sweet potato fries - was very satisfying. Grill pizza however was a flop! This place is all about the locals around the bar on a Saturday afternoon. Might go back for lunch but not for diner.

Hands down the best place in Charlestown and the surrounding area. Great food, drinks and atmosphere. LOVE karaoke on Friday nights. This place will always hit the spot no matter what you're craving.

DID THE STAFF WRITE THE RAVE REVIEWS ON HERE?! I have been vacationing in Charlestown for over a decade now and time and time again my friends and I give the Cove "one last chance." This summer was the last straw! We are done and here is why... As children our parents NEVER took us to eat there and when we got older and ventured there for lunch we discovered the food is nothing to write home about. Regardless, we figured it could be a great dive to grab drinks in--but we were wrong! Aside from Travis, the staff is MISERABLE and uptight. We arrived there on a Saturday night (with our parents in tow) and found there wasn't even music playing and though we poured money into the juke box and bar the older female bartender was rude and we had to practically beg for service. After only a few drinks she cut us off for singing Gotye. NO SINGING AT A DIVE BAR? I really cannot deal with that. Seriously, avoid avoid avoid this place, save yourself the frustration and just go to The Breachway. Better food. Better drinks. Better service. Bottom line: The food isn't good and the staff makes you feel like they wish you were elsewhere. So, do them and yourself a favor and just go elsewhere.

Just left and renovation and new menu is legit. Older blonde hostess perhaps owner, incredibly rude. Had a party of 8 spent $300 on drinks and dinner and this woman was nothing but straight rude. Hate to write this because we love the Cove but not right. Be kind to your patrons we are not all tourists.

Great food, the veggie baked fries appetizer with lettuce, salsa and hot cherry peppers were unique and tasty. Philly Cheesesteak grinders hit the spot. Clean, good value. Great staff

Super service, Narraganset on tap, and excellent food!!! And the PICKLE the perfect ending to the perfect meal. Small dill chips cut thick with the right amount of crisp and flavor. (The coconut shrimp app was amazing too)

  • Ilisa N.

Lovely food, lovely service. It's basically elevated bar food, so head in there with realistic expectations. The kids' meals were ok, fries undercooked but they didn't mind because they're kids and ketchup fixes everything. I had crab cake salad. Great salad. Lots of veggies, tasty dressing, but pretty small. The crab cake was good sized, but not well seasoned. Pretty bland actually. It was the excellent service that elevated the meal from mediocre to memorable. Our waitress was sweet and funny, and attentive without hovering. It's funny how service makes such a huge difference.

Great place! Got the fried calamari and the salmon BLT and they were both fantastic. The patio is great for a summer day after the beach and the plates were HUGE! A bit pricey for not 'gourmet' food but it was great anyway. Just the kind of food you want after a morning at the beach. Will definitely come back!

  • Patricia R.

We're always looking for a casual restaurant with good food...The Cove is just that! We ordered the Calamari Giovanni as an app which was cooked to perfection (love banana peppers!). The chowder was awesome- nice and creamy with amazing flavor. And for entrées we had the Seafood Primavera which is loaded with scallops and shrimp tossed in a delectable Alfredo sauce and the fish and chips which is made with light and flaky cod with just enough batter fried nice and crispy. Overall, delicious. Satisfied with the meal? Absolutely! Only complaint (which isn't really one) is we ordered way too much food!!! Huge portions!

  • Patrick C.

Great find!!! After walking in, I thought it would just be a bar with a few tables. I was wrong. Our waitress was adorable, and great service! Seated promptly. Food was out within minutes. Got the fish & chips & strips - the food was not overly fried and the batter was tasty. Finished up with the berry crisp which was delicious. Only problem was that I was in a food coma.

Food was generic and don't try staying after 900PM, if you do the wait staff turns into Dusk Till Dawn... RUDE AND WANT YOU TO LEAVE! Never again.

Decent seasonal beer selection if you're not a beer snob, good food, fair prices. Nice for a pit stop for lunch or a causal dinner.

Excellent food. Fast friendly service. Reasonably priced. Go early to avoid any potential wait. Definitely will go back again.

The Cove is my "go to place" in Charlestown. We have a small cottage just down the road and over the past year while renovating the place, I've eaten here many, many times. We have brought family and friends to the Cove over the years and everyone always has a good time. The food is consistent, and generally very good. Have I had a few "misses" over the past year? Yes, but overall the Cove is a wonderful local restaurant. My favorite's at the Cove are; Calamari Giovanni, Lobster Bisque, Crab Cake Sandwich, Grilled Pizza and Whole Belly Clams (usually a special). What's the best thing about the Cove? The staff. Attentive, knowledgeable, and just plain nice. Anytime I wanted something a little special they would try their hardest to make sure it was taken care of. And once when the kitchen sent out a "miss", the staff went "over and above" to make it right. After I saw how the staff reacted to a poorly executed special, I became a regular. Kudos to Melanie and Marissa. It get super crowed in the summer (as do almost all of the restaurants in the area), but the pace assumes normalcy after Labor Day. Drinks are large, prices are reasonable, and staff treats me like family. What's not to like?

Great little place tucked away in a cool part of Charlestown. Great food and outside deck. The salmon BLT is amazing and the fries are great. Fun entertainment on the weekends including Karaoke on Friday nights. The only complaint is the smoking on the patio.

  • Amy G.

Went there with my children and my step mother. I ordered the seafood pasta dish. It was a large portion filled with shrimp, scallops and calimari. The fish and chips my 14 year old ordered were also cooked perfect. Service was great and the food came out fast and hot. They don't have a kids burger on their menu, so I ended up paying $9.99 for a hamburger for my 5 year old.

I was introduced to this place years ago by a friend and have been returning ever since, the food and atmosphere are great and their clam chowder is the best and my gauge for judging all others. Highly recommended!

The Cove is listed as one of the better restaurants in Charlestown, so my boyfriend and I decided to check it out during our weekend stay. I'm not quite sure what the fuss is all about. The décor is typical of a local New England seafood restaurant. There was no wait and our waitress was very nice and attentive. Everything sort of went downhill after the food arrived. We ordered the nacho appetizer, which was a plate full of tortilla shells covered in hardened cheese. You had to dig into the middle of the pile in order to get the hot melted cheese. We ended up pushing the plate to the side half eaten. I ordered the shrimp and scallop scampi entrée, figuring I couldn't go wrong. The shrimp themselves were beautifully cooked, but the scallops were under cooked and resembled big balls of gelatin, and the scampi was flavorless. As expensive as this meal was, I'd rather find a clam shack off the highway somewhere than return.

Very close to the beach. Excellent clam strips, fries and crab cakes. Kick ass pirate at the door. It would be nice if the patio opened before 6pm though.

$6.99 for a chicken sandwich and fries on a Monday night. How can you go wrong (right)? The chicken was overcooked and came with a blob of stewed tomato on top...gross! The French fries tasted fishy, so they were clearly fried in the same oil as the fish. They're limited amount of draft beers are pricey compared to other area establishments. On the one positive note...the bartender was nice.

Don't waste your time at one of those fancy places on the water that charge you for the views. This is the place to go. The service is great, food outstanding and ambience is what beach life is really all about.

The cove is a pretty good restaurant. A little pricey for bar food but I've never been disappointed. Service is always good. Family friendly atmosphere.

This fine establishments earns 4 stars by may reviewers...a clear indication of of its loyal crowd, which says something. I have been in many times and I always find the bar tenders to be the highlight of the trip...always gregarious. The food...hit or miss, which likely a result of high turnover rates in the kitchen and seasonal fluctuation of business intensity. Consistent...yes. A great bar stop after the beach...yes. A great meal....

Great Beach Restaurant, off the beach. Family Run, local cuisine, good prices, innovative food, helpful staff and nice surroundings make this a real catch. The place is packed during the summer, but during the winter, the locals know you can get a great pasta with a nice Pinot Grigio or a great salad with a seafood dinner. Their fried Calamari appetizer with banana peppers and olives is spicy and delicious, worthy of a taste. Entree's catch your eye with specials every day and lots of choices. Just a great local place to go, sit down, have a satisfying meal and a spend some time. The deck even keeps the bugs off for you so you can enjoy South County's beautiful weather while you eat a crunchy salad, some nacho's, panini sandwhiches or some baked scallops topped with buttered crumbs.

I've never been wowed with anything I've ordered at The Cove and over the years, I've ordered quite a few different dishes. In fact, sometimes I've actually hated what I received. Having said that, it is the only sit down restaurant in the "downtown" (!) Charlestown area and so it is convenient. Their wings are not bad. My husband is happy with the Fish and Chips platter. The salads can either be plentiful and satisfying or wilty and brown. I'd say you're most safe with a simple sandwich and fries. There's no talented chef in the kitchen (to my knowledge) and so it's ok in a pinch, but not an excellent dining experience. The service is can be excellent or lousy -- depending on who your waitress is. It does have a nice big bar with big screen tvs -- though I've never sat there, my daughter and friends have and it's fun.

Food and decor, 3 or 3.5 stars. A decent option, especially considering the lack of good options in the immediate area. Comfortable and casual with a warm beachy decor. It's a paper placemats and heavy wooden tables kind of a place. They have a varied menu including seafood, fried food, burgers, sandwiches, pasta, soups, and salads. Lots of options for seafood-lovers and haters alike. Decent prices. Crunchy fries and big basic salads or bowls of soup come with your dinner. A good selection of beers on tap. The specials include things like stuffed flounder or fried oysters. The Cove is nothing extraordinary but it's an okay choice for a solid dinner after a day at the beach.

After the hurricane this place was serving spoiled sea food. Even on a good day, it is an average bar with greasy food and so so service.

Always busy, local place in Charlestown. Popular with families. Good seafood and friendly service. Nice outside area in the back. Be prepared to wait on weekends in the summer for dinner. Can be loud, very casual place.

Excellent establishment in Charlestown, chowder is the best in the area and flavored with dill which is unique and.....really delicious. Burgers are great, with a char-grilled flavor. Pasta Carbonara and Vodka Penne are both tremendous, with great portion sizes and can be altered to your taste. Overall, very reliable, high quality ingredients.Best pub grub and pasta for miles around ! Very worthy of a visit !

We have been going to The Cove since it opened. The waitresses are always helpful. The food is very reasonable and the specials, especially during off season are always a treat. We really enjoy the homemade desserts by Ginny. It is a nice place to bring the family and we make it a point to go there at least 2 or 3 times a month.

We just had dinner at the Cove with about 30 people, ranging from small children to octogenarians. I was a little nervous about the confusion this would cause the restaurant, especially since my family gatherings are always a little chaotic. But the Cove couldn't have been more accommodating and organized. They had everything perfectly set up upon our arrival and were very flexible with the comings and goings of the people in my party. The food was amazing...the chowder was fantastic and the broiled scallops were delicate and yummy. Everyone else was also really happy with their choices. There wasn't one single problem or complaint among 30 people...which is really incredible. They brought the food out at synchronized times...and were really on top of all our drinks. They also made the birthday celebration for my 87 year old aunt very special. The servers and manager were so helpful and friendly, which made for a really enjoyable evening. I'm already looking forward to next summer so I can go back to have some more chowder!
