We came here a couple of times within a few days of each other. Had a Negroni the first time, a Moscow Mule the second. Both tasted perfect, even had the copper cup. The first time I had the beet salad, meh and the loaded fries which were okay. The waitress was very nice, accommodating both my picky friend and my friend with the seafood allergy. We had a lovely time, it is a very cool atmosphere. Hubbs had the special Swordfish which he loved. The second time, we had a pretty good wait- 30-40 minutes with small children. Same waitress. Very nice and though she was very rushed, did not act like it. A smattering of appetizers were shared; excellent calamari, mushrooms and more fries, eh. My clams and linguine were fantastic, Hubb's pork chop was to die for and the bites of fish and chips were very good. Depends on what you order, but we really liked the look and the coziness of the place and the service.

Hidden gem in Charlestown, RI. Great service, food, and entertainment. Fun summer spot with outside deck, horse shoes and bocci. Great winter spot with great live music, cool bar, and great food. The fries are amazing, especially the truffle fries. Highly recommended!

Food is delicious love this place especially for lunch, always has unique specials. Today had lobster corn chowder and garlic Parmesan wings which we're amazing. Draft beer is ice cold served with frosty mug. House wine is French cote de rhone absolutely delicious. French fries with Pecorino - gotta try. Rathskellar in my top 5 lunch spots

There is a lot to say about a place that does everything so well that it seems effortless. My girlfriend and I were greeted cheerily by the hostess...a 30 minute wait awaited us but was directed to the bar where we were served promptly and again, cheerily despite it being busy. It would have been easy to be in the weeds with the crowd at the bar...but they had it right. My GF got a local cider and I got a Dogfish (both served in 22 oz cold glasses...nice). We sat and got the Oysters Rockefeller (nicely done) and a fresh hot pretzel. Both get recommendations. for entrees the fish and chips were perfect for me...lightly battered with two good size pieces and heaping fries. GF got a schnitzel chicken...to me it tasted almost like a panko breading but she liked it...big enough to take some home for lunch tomorrow. Service was on point and friendly...like I said, each part of our experience was well done...and isn't that why we go out in the first place?? We will definitely be back.

Great addition to the small town of Charlestown. The service is wonderful. The speciality drinks are a must- my favorite is a moscow mule (they make em best). Also loved their menu options- tofu burger or go for a regular burger with the healthier tofu toppings. I frequent the Rathskeller, its a great weekend spot to hang out at.

Awesome rainy Saturday post Friday night cheeseburger and beer place. Yes a classic RI establishment back and on track!!

I have been here twice since the disappointing beet salad incident. Both times were much better. I had a salad with salmon the next 2 times and it was amazing! Service has improved- it was relatively close to the reopening the first time I went- so they probably worked a lot if kinks out!

I like that you can call on your way in to be put on the waiting list. I don't know of any place nearby that does that. The loaded fries are my favorite. The service has always been very acceptable and friendly.

Food and service poor. Raw batter on fish & chips, house salad drowning in dressing, burger ordered med-well and came out raw and out waitress was NOWHERE to be found! NO TIP and manager got an earfull from myself and family.

  • J M.

Returned many times now. Well run, good drinks, food's gotten simpler, and better frankly. I think they needed a little time to work out the kinks. Further, there seems to be quite a nightlife out in them thar woods. They have entertainment, sports screens, horseshoes in the yard and more. I still think they can make the food a little bit better...but I'm loving the burgers (with their own spicy mustard) as well as the Ribeye served with a ramekin of clarified butter with a tinge of garlic. A very good steak!! I love seafood, but have honestly yet to be impressed...they could drain the fried fish better....well...wait a minute...ya gotta try the Calamari app. NOW THAT'S good stuff!!!

Wow how lucky is Charlestown to have a chef like Wayne Bush in their town.Wayne was one of the chefs that made the Matunuck Oyster Bar the success it is today. The Charlestown Rathskeller is lucky because he is putting out food WAY BEYOND what the Oyster Bar is putting out today- not to mention the parking freak show out there. The scallops were fantastic as was the flounder. Great beer and wine at good prices and great service. There is a lot that goes into the success of a restaurant- the food should always be the most important as it is here. The location can work for and against a restaurant, and so can the history of the restaurant. Time moves on and most of the poor reviews are stuck back in the past. Nothing is going to please those people. If you love great food- go and get some at the Charlestown Rathskeller.

Can't find one thing wrong with the Rathskeller. Service by Melissa was impeccable, food was amazing. We had burgers and their famous fries with short rib gravy. Ouch! Great beer selection on draft for us beer snobs. Started with .50 cent wings for Sunday football. The only thing I was sorry about was that we didn't get to enjoy all the outdoor activities they had to offer. We will be back!

The Rathskeller hosted our wedding reception this past Saturday. We had a beautiful tent on the grounds with outdoor heaters, a fire pit, two bar locations, outdoor games and some of the best food we have ever had. Butch, the head chef was absolutely amazing and created a buffet our guests are still raving about. The food was locally sourced, fresh, filling, creative and delicious! The presentation was perfect and thought was paid to every detail. Did I mention it was all vegetarian?!! Nate, Tom, Mark and Butch were always available for our many questions and happy to show us the progress of the restaurant and grounds as they worked day and night until opening. There was thought paid to honestly everything, and the group was happy to help us even with last minute changes with the rental company. The fire pit was another highlight of our wedding keeping our guests toasty along with scattered outdoor heaters. The staff was fast, helpful and professional. As soon as we ran out of anything it was quickly replaced and there was never a line at the two bars that were set up for us. We're so happy to be the first wedding at the Rathskeller and I can easily say it was the best wedding reception I've ever been to!!

We'll be back. Cheerful and attentive waitress and excellent food. I had the Grilled rib eye and I would say I've never had better. My husband had the prime rib, available only on Saturday , he said it was excellent. The waitress asked if he would like some horseradish with sour cream also, (it came with au jus), but of course he would! It's the attentive service that makes the difference ! We are lucky enough to live close by, but don't be afraid to make the trip !

Beautiful renovated. I wish the appetizer menu was bigger. There was nothing to "share" between our party.

My son just had his wedding here at the Rathskellar yesterday in a tent outside. The food was absolutely excellent, service great, wonderful outside heaters on a slightly cool October night, huge fire pit going. I can't say enough how the owner and his staff did a fabulous job for my family and friends for this wedding!! Highly recommend it.

Beautifully renovated and reopened after 10+ years. The food was delicious. The beer on tap selection was extensive. Our waitress was spot on. The manager was making the rounds from table to table to check on things which is always a good sign. It's my new "old" favorite spot for dinner.

I'm so glad I found this place and it seems as if everyone I mention it to remembers the old RS. It was 100% new to me an I can't wait to go back. Lets face it this area of South County doesn't have that many decent places to grab food. I went with my son ( 5 yr old ) after a day on the water because I was NOT going home to cook. Solid service from the time we walked in the door until we walked out. The staff were friendly, the food was on point and they have a decent beer list. I had the Garlick/Parm Wings and the Stuffed Mushrooms, both great. Oh and Thank u a million times over RS for doing a non-seafood based stuffed mushroom, not many places do them this way and they are slamming. My son had simple elbows and butter which according to him were great. The waitress was awesome with interacting with my child when at the table( Not all do this). I will say the table next to me ordered the fries with the gravy on them and typically that isn't my taste but they looked amazing ( Maybe it was out of hunger ) We will be back for sure.

Really like this spot. I like the drive down to Charleston, especially on a chilly mid-winter day. Love the fact that this place has a real, working fireplace (not gas, not a wood stove, not a pellet stove but a real stone hearth with logs all a-poppin' and crackling- worth the price of lunch just for the smell alone!). The layout seems practical; family friendly dining room on one side, bar on the other, far enough removed where you almost don't hear the wailing children that folks seem to enjoy bringing to restaurants for some reason. There are a few high-top tables in the bar area, right near the fireplace where you can sit and eat your meal as well. And although there are nearly ten TV screens throughout the bar, it's not so loud that you couldn't ignore them. I'd say that the volume must have been completely off in fact, as all I heard was the classic rock mix coming off the satellite- which I personally have no problems with. The food: Normal, American pub food. No fuss, no muss. And you know what? This day and age; that's really saying something! We had the Clams casino appetizer. I would have loved maybe 2 more on the plate, as they where delicious, but the price was fair enough, so I'll not complain on that point. The beer selection was more than adequate, with some REALLY reasonable draft prices. Whether you're into micro-craft brews or the American standards- they've got the beer for you. I had the Buffalo wings and they were great! To be honest, I had wanted to try the "Honey Mustard" wings, but they were running a special that day and you could get 6 (buffalo) wings to $3. Or 12 wings for $6! So I chose the 12, and you know what? ...Too much food! I had to take half home! Maybe it was all those great French fries I had. Or maybe it was the fact that my wife couldn't quite finish her "Bacon Blue Burger", even though she found it superb. My wife doesn't even like pickles, yet she ended up putting those "house made" pickles on her burger. And when the bill came we were pleasant surprised at the total- how often does THAT happen? Hey, I had never been to the old Rathskeller at this location, so I can't compare it to that- but I'll tell you this- -I'm looking forward to my next trip down to Charleston because I'm getting thirsty and hungry...

Sure, YMMV (your mileage may vary) but I am definitely not feeling that the 1 and 2 star reviews were appropriate. Or maybe things have improved considerably since they were written - I'm not sure which might be the case but the place is a definite 3-star and leans more towards 3.75 so it gets the bump to 4. And yes, I review with a critical eye and consider EVERYTHING about the experience - not just "the menu is a bit light on tofu items so I gave it 2 stars." Really? Our visit was Saturday, 03/15 and it was our first time there. We arrived around 8:15 pm and had a 20 minute wait. Building, décor, ambience, lighting, music: All a solid 4 stars. Be clear however, this is not the spot for a romantic dinner. It's a little louder than that - heck, Aerosmith was playing through the speakers on the front porch as we walked in - that should give you some idea on what to expect. Plenty of TV's in the bar area. Booze: 4 stars. Lots of beer selections and plenty of beers on-tap so that everyone's desires should be well met. Food: 3 stars. Apps: My wife started with the Roasted Beet Salad that had mixed greens, dates, goat cheese, toasted hazelnuts, honey lime vinaigrette for $7.95 - WINNER. That salad was EXCEPTIONAL. I had cup of pumpkin lobster bisque. It was okay. Flavors were delightful (yes, I said delightful) but lacking in actual lobster meat. Dinner: I had the Crab Stuffed Flounder with basmati rice and citrus beurre blanc at $23.95 and it was pretty good. My wife had the Seared Scallops with tomato butter and saffron green pea risotto at $24.95. Again, pretty solid. Staff, overall friendliness and vibe: again, a solid 4 stars. Very nice bartender where we waited for our table. Waitress was pleasant and provided solid service. Location: Again, what the heck? This place is right next to East Overshoe. Yeah, it's out in the woods but that should not deter anyone. It was fun and the food was good. Will we go back? Definitely. I am looking forward to sitting outside on what appears to be a pretty nice stone patio that has its own outdoor bar.

Got the point Judith flounder dish which was excellent! The atmosphere is a tad loud, and the establishment is clean. Reasonable prices. I would eat of you're in the area- but quite frankly its in the middle of nowhere.

Read about the place on trip advisor. Punched it on gps and thought : are we going in the right direction? Once we found it, it was a gem ! Awesome food and service. My husband ordered a burger, which was hand formed an cooked to perfection. My Cobb salad was tasty and plentiful. Loaded fries were a great appetizer. We sat outside on a beautiful day. Bocci and other games are available on the beautiful grounds! Highly recommend.

Fabulous!! Such a joy to have the Rathskeller back. The staff and management are friendly and engaged. The food still has the standards from yesteryear with the freshness of new updated recipes. Great food, great atmosphere just what we needed around here. Welcome back Rathskeller.

The Rathskeller....back again after a long hiatus. Writing this is like writing history using 'B.C.E. and A.D.' I was a customer at the 'Skeller in the 'B.C.E' era so I can reflect on just how bad it was to how good it is now. Growing up ten minutes from this restaurant made it one of three local eateries my family would travel to for a quick lunch or a leisurely dinner. Back in the day, their fries were something to behold: hand cut, greasy to the point of being saturated to the core almost, and likely cooked in beef broth or something meaty. As evil as all this sounds, they were pretty damn good! I always enjoyed the period murals and knowing the meaning of the sign above what is now the old restaurant entrance...no, I'm not telling you! BTW, Elaine Porter did a wonderful job replicating and restoring the prohibition era murals-a detail I couldn't overlook! Onto the food: It was on a busy Sunday night that we decided to venture out for our inaugural return to the Rathskeller with another couple, making two people in the party Ratherskeller B.C.E attendants. We liked the decor-a freshening up while keeping things 'authentic 'Skeller' was nice to see. We didn't wait long for a generously sized booth, adding a chair for the five of us (4.5 if you're specific about the ten year old). The waitperson was very pleasant and solicitous-a good sign! Drinks were decent with nice beer choices on tap. The 'mistake' was ordering a large fries with gravy-what a behemoth! Insanely large portion doused with beef gravy and beef bits-not for the faint of heart. My entree was the flounder which was just fantastic. I'm lucky enough to know most places worth their salt won't serve you lame seafood being minutes from the source here in RI, so I say with complete confidence that the kitchen knew what to do with a fresh piece of fish! Everyone else enjoyed their dishes and drinks so all I have to add is, we'll be back!

We went the Friday before Christmas and had THE BEST time. As someone who prefers to frequent the "usual" list of places when they come home, I gotta say the Rathskeller has definitely been added to that list. We waited for our table at the bar, which was decently packed but not completely overcrowded - the bartender served us right away and the beer was cold and delicious. We ended up at a table near the Stag/Moosehead in the room with the bar. We split a bunch of appetizers, including the absolutely DEELISH calamari and the yummy mac and cheese. I then had the cowboy burger which was freaking amazing. Like, best burger I've had in a LONG time. And the fries really completed the meal. In addition to the outstanding food, I really liked that the place is comfortable enough where you feel right at home, but the service is still exceptional. Seriously, our server was great - totally knowledgeable and there whenever we needed something. Can't wait to go back and really hope this places stays around.

Worst hostesses ever. We were a party of 5 adults and two children. Took them over an hour to seat us after group after group kept coming through the door and getting seated before us. They finally offered us back to back booths which were useless for conversation. Finally they had a table for us and when we asked why we were still waiting the hostess said they had other things going on so we needed to wait . The food was good but the totally incompetent hostesses ruined the evening. You work in customer service ladies try smiling and being nice to customers. Based on this visit I doubt I'd return.

I have really been rooting for this place, since it would make a nice dining option for the area. I have been twice and have to say that they still have quite a few kinks to work out. On the plus side, the renovated restaurant is very cozy and has a nice atmosphere, albeit on the loud side. The menu is that very traditional Rhode Island surf and turf kind of menu, and the selection is rather narrow. Unfortunately, at dinnertime most of the sandwiches and burgers are off limits, so you are basically stuck with the large and somewhat pricey entrees. The worst part about my experiences was the absolutely careless and sloppy service. There is chaos as soon as you walk in, and a gaggle of hostesses and servers hanging around the middle of the restaurant. After a long wait for our food, our order was botched. Unfortunately, they got the kids meals wrong, so the waitress served the adults and went back to put in the right order. The grilled cheeses arrived 20 minutes later, after the adults had already completed most of their meal - alongside hungry and restless children. We got a brief "sorry 'bout that" from the server, but were shocked when we got our bill and had been charged for both the correct kids meals as well as the ones that were sent back. It took two tries and several minutes to get the correct bill, to the point where the rest of the party left and I waited at the table to resolve the issues. I would have expected some kind of discount for messing up the kids' meals, but by the end I was too frustrated and exhausted to make an issue of it. Perhaps this is an issue that will be worked out over time. I am in no rush to return, but I will update if our next experience goes more smoothly.

The rathskellers menu doesn't have much of a variety to choose from and if you do not like seafood this is not the restaurant for you. There are only 5 burgers to choose from with only one choice for a chicken dinner. You also are not able to order lunch all the choices sandwiches for dinner, which also only leaves you three to choose from. So If you want to come eat the food is a little pricey, but if you want to just come to the rathskeller to drink, them the drinks are fantastic.

Nice and clean place with a friendly staff. Food was good, the burgers and basic pub food was very good. Fancier dishes were good but too busy with the flavors. It was packed on a week day night early in the evening! Waitresses were working hard but still stayed cheerful. If you haven't been here yet check it out. It is better than the cove by 10000% and so much nicer vibe. And did I mention clean? Overall a very welcome addition to the Charlestown restaurant scene!

This place is where you go for a great bar, good selection of beer, bartenders that actually want you there. Food was good overall, don't go here on a diet. Then....you go out back to an adult play land. Started with horseshoes (professional grade set up), sand volleyball, firepit half the size of a car and cornhole. We'll be back.

Heard this was a. " go to" place many years ago. Pretty much agree with the majority of folks that there is nothing special about the place. The fries were supposed to be a big deal, they were kind of wet and leaking more oil than Poland. Burger was ok, menu was old. Inside was all new but kind of stark like a basement. Makes you wonder if people from RI ever get out.

Like a lot of locals that remember the hey day of this place, I awaited the reopening of the Rathskeller with great excitement. The old Rathskeller was an institution in town. The food was always good and cheap, and the french fries were truly legendary. Even its odd remote location added something adventuresome to the experience. It's a nice quaint quiet ride there. There are two things you could always count on at the old Rathskeller, terrific burgers and fries and other fare at a decent price, and rather surly, swamp Yankee service and attitude. Nobody really cared for the food and place was just so good... Unfortunately most of the lousy service has remained while the food, and especially the prices have gone south...I have never been one for fancy dinners, and a good burger and fries was my usual at the old Rathskeller. The new place has a pretty good selection of burgers on the menu, but nothing special in comparison to what I have seen in other local places. (No where near as good as the Mews tavern in town). Although the mushroom and onion with Swiss burger I got was tasty enough, it ran $8.50 alone, no fries or chips on the side. And this was no half pound burger either, but perhaps a third of a pound. Personally I have never seen or had a burger anywhere at that price that didn't include a side of fries, or at least chips. Just about anyone that orders one is going to spring for the small fry at $3.50 and the owners well know that and take advantage of it. In all fairness now, the small fry is a good size like the old Rathskeller was famous for, and they were really good fries, but NO, they were not the same great ones that the old tavern did so well. ( I don't care what they or anyone else says, they are not the same, nor as good). As for the service, the old tavern seemed to have a thing for waitresses with an attitude, and that often disappeared after the food was served to well after you were in need of something extra, or your drink went dry. Although my waitress was attentive enough, the same old attitude of not really giving a shit seem to be present in force. Like the old place, I would have just accepted it all of the food and price was on the same level of the place in its heyday. But trust me it is far from it. Overall I wasn't impressed with the new Rathskeller at all. And its my opinion that you won't be either. (Despite the number of rave reviews. I'm sorry, but I just don't get it. Just being kind to the history of the place, or friends of the owners perhaps). The menu has some of the most expensive prices I have seen anywhere for an old time family tavern type place that doesn't bill itself as fancy. And for what I saw of the portions on other tables, they didn't make up the difference there either. I consider the new Rathskeller expensive, and not at all a decent remake of the old legend. Don't bother unless you are feeling particularly nostalgic and just can't resist...

I've been to the Rathskeller 3 times in the past 2 weeks. This place has it all. Great food with a bit of a twist. A good wine selection and interesting and unusual cocktails. The renovation came out amazing. A great blend of old and new. The waitstaff provides friendly excellent service. I'll be going back again and again!

Wow...really? Several locals have been giving this place the "high five" lately, so I stopped by to see what all the excitement was about.. The old Rat was a townie fave in its hey day, so it has a very local following. The building has been completely renovated, but it has the "artistic charm" of days gone by. In other words, what might have worked then..doesn't work now. The renovation has an old and tired theme. Then again, if you like character pics of old boxers (not the dog) painted on walls then this place is for you. The menu looks and reads like it has been around for 50 years. Vegetarians and healthy eaters beware! It is a carnivores delight and with hefty prices to match. $17.95 for a chicken entree is on the "cheap" end of their dinner selection. Keep in mind that this is a family style dining/basic pub grub establishment. One would expect the cost of this experience to match the food fare. I don't typically pay up for an entree that I can easily make at home, so I just had a burger and fries. It was decent, but nothing special. Overall, the menu is a bore. The beer selection is limited when compared to other local taverns. With the exception of the big screen TV for sports viewing (which you can find just about anywhere these days) the "ambiance" is so..so. I didn't find the atmosphere particularly inviting.

Returned for a second visit tonight with my mom! I am changing my star review from 4 to 5! The food was just as tasty! We were seated in the bar area, although skeptical since last time I was here we were forced to deal with the extremly disruptive vibrations below from the potato peeler. Much to my delight, tonight we didn't have to deal with our table and chairs vibrating! It only made my second trip here that much more fantastic :) I can't wait to visit again in the next couple weeks and enjoy some food outside on the patio and possibly catch a local band for some good tunes!

Nice place, great service and the waitress was fantastic. Had the Beef Stroganoff was good but they need to add some beef next time as there was very little beef. Entrees are overprice for what you get. You have to pay extra for the bread also lol, What kind of place is too cheap to serve you bread with your entree?

I can't say enough good things about the rathskellar! I remember going there as a kid and now I'm so happy to be able to bring my kids there! The fries are always a must! But I've never had a bad meal there yet and we are frequent flyers. The reason for finally making my review is we went the other day and not only was our food delicious as always but our waitress was fabulous! She took such special attention to not only our food and the overall experience but took special attention to our kids, offering them crayons and remarking on her pictures. And if your not close by, it's worth it for the trip! It's one of our top favs to go to! There's not many restaurants that are worth a second trip but the rathskellar definitely is --- and its worth many others after that! Stop in now!

Original review: This quite little place was a lot better than I thought. Friendly people and relaxing place. They have a good selection of Whiskeys on the menu and serve it in the proper glass too, which is great. The only reason I gave three stars is the food is good, but really bland. There seems to be a lack of seasoning. I had a meat loaf dinner special, which lacked any seasoning in the meat. The meat was a bit dry too. Mashed potatoes and veggies were good, but lacked seasoning. I thought maybe it was just my dish, but my girlfriends fish and chips had the same problem with seasoning. Crispy exterior on the fish, but the flour/and or the fish was not seasoned. Seasonings like salt are suppose to bring out the natural flavor a of food, but there seems to be a lack of salt. I will return and try something else. Maybe it was an off day for the kitchen staff, but the good Whiskeys are enough for me to give it another try. Update review: I went back and gave this place another try. The burgers are really good. Seasoned well and cooked the way I wanted it. The greatest thing about the burger other than tasting great. They don't come with a crap load of fries. I don't like it when I get a big burger and a huge side of fries; I also dislike fries too. You can order the fries separate, which is awesome. I look forward to returning and trying some other dishes. The Pichard's Double Chocolate Bourbon is really good. Live music, good burgers, and awesome whiskey. This is my kind of tavern.

Pub food standards are alright, but not exceptional, and the servers are decent though overtasked in a space that's busier than you might expect it would be. Just OK, which still makes it a top choice in the area.

I search for a place like this. First the food, the ling and clams are the best I have had bar none! Loaded with clams and the sauce is to die for. The rest of the menu you cannot go wrong as well. Tough to pick another spot in the area that is that good overall. The beer selection is good it would be nice if they had some more local selections. I love the fire pit and games. Go and hang out, have fun and enjoy. It is not hard to accomplish that in this place.

My husband grew up going to this place. We were thrilled when it reopened. The beer on tap is fantastic. Love that there is a digital readout of the temp of the beer displayed in the bar. So they have always been famous for their French fries. You can get these giant plates of fresh cut fries to share. We get the mini and it is a generous plenty for two. Bummed that often they are not hot and even taste like the cold fries were refried. We send them back more than half the time. They could really learn something from McDonald's. You'd think they'd care more about the quality of their signature item. Hit or miss on the entrees. Kitchen seems frazzled when the place is busy. I'd like the daily specials to be more straightforward. They're trying to do too much and would be better off sticking to the basics. We are rooting for this place and just wish they'd step it up a bit. I like that it's a fun place filled with folks of all ages.

This place is great. I was told by coworkers that the "old" Rathskeller was awesome and an area staple. After they reopened, I went with a coworker for apps and drinks. We enjoyed some live music and a toasty warm atmosphere on a cold winter night. The loaded bacon fries were AMAZING! And I'm not a huge fan of fries, but holy smokes! I then returned this summer with my aunts, who are unfamiliar with most of South County. We sat on the patio and were surprised to see how busy it got for a Wednesday evening. The dinners and apps were great, drinks were inexpensive, and the service was friendly. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that you can play horseshoes in the yard while waiting for your food!!! I will definitely return!!

Got the point Judith flounder dish which was excellent! The atmosphere is a tad loud, and the establishment is clean. Reasonable prices. I would eat of you're in the area- but quite frankly its in the middle of nowhere.

This historical, backwoods, former speakeasy, secret landmark is an absolute gem. We've been going for years and years. We loved it in its earlier heyday. We are thrilled and delighted that it is back in finer shape than before. Our recent visit was highlighted by Cristy B, our server, that was attentive, friendly, warm and professional. The atmosphere is lively and spirited. The food is really excellent. Kudos to those that brought this institution back. And an enormous round of applause to Ryan, for running such a well-oiled machine.

I came in for the first time last night off a recommendation from a friend. We were told that there is generally a wait (which is a good thing) but we were able to be seated almost right away. They have several sizes to coincide with their wide ranging beer selection and each beer came out ice cold. We ordered a soft pretzel for an app and the mustard that came with it was delicious and super spicy. The fish and chips and pasta fresco that my friends ordered looked really good. I had a thai-ginger chicken wrap that was wrapped with lettuce instead of bread. It was a cool concept and it was much lighter and airier then a normal wrap. The only thing I was confused about was the french fries. Everyone there raved about them. I ordered a plain mini fry and didn't find anything special with it. Next time, I'll have to try the truffle ones. Maybe they'll change my mind.

When you're driving through the dark, lightless, and forested roads of South County, you don't quite expect a large and lively looking establishment like Rathskellers to suddenly illuminate the surroundings. But that's exactly what this bar does. Situated in what almost seems like the middle of no where, it's a little like a small adventure to get here. But once you arrive, you're in store for a good time--and probably a bit of a wait if you're looking for a table. Rathskeller does do this cool thing where you can call ahead and be put into a waiting list. So then the wait wouldn't be that long. Once you get inside though, you have a great range of food (restaurant and bar options) and drinks. I've only sat on their bar side so I'll report on that. It's a lively area with large flat-screen TV's brightening up the walls, streaming whatever sports or news is on. Accompanying the screens is also a funny collection of taxidermy: deer heads, black bears, little rodents, greenery (okay that's not taxidermy, but it creates the scenes). I've tried their famous fries with delicious gravy. Word to the wise, a plate of that is big enough for at least two, maybe even 3 people. Wow. But pretty satisfying. They also have pretty delicious oysters from their raw bar. They also have a decent amount of beers to choose from with different sizes. It's not as big of a variety as say Mews or The Malted Barley per se, but it's still a good variety. My favorite part of Rathskeller's though is their outdoors area. They have room for 3 horseshoe lanes, a lane of bocci, picnic tables and patio bar seating galore. And then further out there's a large fire pit surrounded by chairs, a small outdoor stage, and then a cash bar! Continuing on an interesting trend, Rathskeller is a family friendly bar. Last time I went, I noticed that whatever families came with kids, all the children were gathered in and around the sand volleyball court all playing with each other while the adults all relaxed in the outdoor stage area and fire pits. Really quite awesome.

Worth the wait! The fries steal the show any way you get them. So delicious. The menu has good options for all. Our family enjoys the pretzels, salads, pickles, German sausage platter, fish & chips and bread basket. The atmosphere is casual and service is good. Go enjoy a fun evening!

No. Just, no. We went for fish and chips last night due to the fact the another restaurant in Charlestown was fresh out. Our waitress spilled an entire tray of drinks (or first drinks before we had ordered) all over my mother, she was completely soaked from head to toe on one side of her body! My sister's shoes and mine were completely drenched in red wine also. And my 100% leather purse was splashed along the side leaving marks. We were not even offered a free beverage or any compensation at all. Not even my poor mother who was drenched in red wine was offered a drink for the inconvenience. We were nice about it when we could have caused a stink, but out of the five people in our party ALL of us have been in the restaurant industry, two currently still are servers. Just because we didn't freak out doesn't mean we should not have been compensated even a tiny bit or even offered a compensation, we would have likely refused anyway. I mean at least a drink for the person that wore the beverages would have been a classy and professional gesture. Bottom line - they should be ashamed of themselves for not offering to take an order of fries off the bill, I mean how much could fries possibly cost to make? Give away a potato to let your customers know you're sorry you soaked them? No, not the Rathskeller. Instead, here are some cheap bathroom, brown kraft paper, non-absorbant, crispy paper towels for you to attempt to dry your feet and sandals with. Enjoy your mediocre food and have a splendid wine-soaked night! We will absolutely never be back.

Speak easy The Rathskeller restaurant was first started in 1933 but before that the building had quite a reputation as a speak easy during the probation era. All kinds of stories about vast amounts of booze going through here, all illegally of course. The original Rathskeller had great food but was a dark and pretty scruffy looking place. Being in the middle of the RI woods probably didn't help. For some reason the restaurant closed in around the year 2000 or so and remained closed for over ten years. The restaurant opened again about in 2013 and was extensively renovated and cleaned up. I sort of miss the dark and scruffy feel but there is no doubt that the new look is pleasant. Still has the wood beams and cool archaic atmosphere, but now is much brighter and cheerier. The strange kind of pseudo vaudeville art looks a bit out of place and forced but the rest of the interior is quite lovely. Of course the main reason for a restaurant to exist is the food and the food here is still superb. Quite a diverse menu, with conventional burgers and the like as well as some great seafood. To finish off your meal there are massive and wonderful desserts. The venerable old building has seen lots of changes over the decades, some good and others not so good. But new incarnation of the Rathskeller is apparently working out pretty well judging from the crowds on most nights. A cool restaurant with a lot of history that is worth the effort to find.

We liked the décor here and the service was friendly, but the food was not good. This is the first time I have had brown lobster bisque, not very appealing. I didn't finish it. My friend said the Caesar salad tasted like nothing, and the pretzel was ok but the dips that came with it were gross. Who eats pretzels with bbq sauce anyway?? We had a couple beers and that was fine but I thought there would be more German/Belgian beers on the menu. It is out of the way so I would probably not go back unless there was an event going on.

Great place just off the beaten path with great food, spirits, atmosphere and open space. Upon approaching it the size will fool you. It's bigger than it appears to be inside and done just right. The bar is separate from the dining area so no real noise from the bar. Outside patio is nice and most tables have an umbrella though some don't. Found that kinda strange but hey to each their own right. Bar is big and roomy and bartenders are friendly and polite and have many suggestions if your not sure of what u want. Just be prepared to give your ID if you want a Moscow mule for the copper cup it comes in. Imagine that people steal the cups lol. The bar has a very wide range of different spirits and whiskeys which I love since many don't. The burgers are great here and come just how u asked for them and cooked to your liking. Not loaded with fries thank God and they even make there own chips. It's restored nice inside for such an old building and love the decor in the place. From the wooden beams exposed to the bear on the wall. Will definitely be back for more and you should to.

This place is off the beaten path, but well worth the visit. The menu is plentiful. Try the Flounder topped with Lobster, or the Blackened Swordfish. Both amazing. The drink menu is equally impressive!

Went here for something to break up the ride back from Moho. The general consensus of the group was it was good pub food but nothing 5 star worthy. The service and atmosphere were the usual fare though this place is trying to be a classier type pub with moderate amounts of "colonial pub" decor is I guess what one would call it. It is bright inside and spacious. But in the dead of winter what doesn't feel spacious in south county. I had the scallops which I found fabulous. Others in the party had the fries which were a hit and the corn chowder which was a miss. According to the waitress the outside is something to look forward to in the summer with lots of activities and such but for today it was all put away so no word on that in this review. Overall I would say this is a step up from a bar and a step down from a restaurant. Very confusing. Which on the topic of confusing good luck finding this place without gps... It's way off the grid from a RI standpoint. 10 min from closest major road.

Had a great night! Due to call ahead we did not have to wait long for a table. Got the loaded fries for an app and the fish and chips for dinner. Both were great! They make a mean Moscow mule but be forewarned. They take your ID to ensure they get their copper cup back! Totally worth it.

Pretty good food. Had some pork belly tacos and chicken parmesan sandwich which were both decent. Fries were good, but didn't get the hype. Homemade but a little overcooked (think potato sticks). Buffalo wings were average. Pretty cool that they have a bocce court and whatnot, probably fun at night.

Always a wait, no matter when we try to go. One night 45 mins. Finally got in another night, called ahead and it was only 15 mins. No reservations. Parking was ok. Packed but able to get a spot. Staff was friendly, hostess nice. Waitress very nice, not smothering, timed her return trips to our a table a bit longer than normal. Burgers were great! Almost a 10. Maybe 8-9. Not worth a trip back though for the wait. Had great pickle chips and when we asked for more we got a huge pile of them... However, unknowingly got whacked a few bucks on the bill for them!! Burgers were priced about right. Bar Looked fun and spacious. Really casual... baseball caps and camo on some. Much older crowd, not many kids if any. Also really hard to find off the beaten path! Still good for a couple to hit the bar and wait for a table, and outside is reall nice.

I love the quirky old time speakeasy atmosphere. Love the drunken looking elephant mural, the swanky dancing girls, etc...they are the real thing...old murals not retro-painted...therese are originals...a trip through time. The drive to find the place is half the fun..better for those with a good GPS. otherwise, you better makes notes on Mapquest directions or something...very easy top get lost looking for the place. When you get there, it's hard to believe how active it is in there when it is so remote. We went on a Monday night and there was a guy singing and playing the guitar..what places have that on a Monday? It was nice. The place is famous for great fires, but I try to avoid them. I had the vegetarian black bean burger, which was great, and others in my group had fish dinners and burgers. The burgers were perfect (they said). Out appetizers Yankee chowder was fabuous. It was the kind other restaurants call Rhode Island or clear chowder. They also have a cream-based chowder, but we didn't order that. We split 2 salads between 5 people and it was sufficient. They didn't mind us asking for extra plates. The waitresses were friendly and professional. They coordinated themselves with each other well...sometimes helping each other at their other stations to keep things moving. At times everything stopped for different tables to have"Happy Birthday" sung to them. The waitresses seem to all be friends and look like URI girls. At least it seemed like that to me. We had a great time...the drinks and coffee were also great.

Four of us went for dinner and we had a great time. The entrance is ample and it has some nice tables and chairs outside.... The indoors you have a choice of the lively bar with lots of "energy" or the more laid back dining room. During the warm months, outdoor seating on the patio is available. The four meals we had were excellent....Swiss Burger, Fried Flounder sandwich, Fish and chip and Reuben sandwich. Their fries are amazing as well as their chips. Overall a great dining spot in So County.

We feel so lucky to have this place close to home! We love the food and the drink selections! Good wine, Moscow mules and a large selection of draft beer! The atmosphere is comfortable. We come with our 16yr old son often and we all can enjoy it here. I also like that there is outdoor seating & activities available. Parking can be a bit tight

I am forever grateful to my cousin-through-marriage for introducing me to this place. After a less than stellar outing to the Hot Air Balloon fest nearby, she went "Hey, there is suppose to be this really fun bar in Charlestown, let's go check it out." Punch in the address in the GPS and behold, the Rathskeller, an awesome bar/local food/live music/outdoor games establishment that saved our evening. We arrived around 6:30 and there was a 45 minute wait. No problem though, as there is plenty to do to occupy your time while you wait to be seated. We headed to the bar and grabbed some frosty, ice cold 22 oz mugs of beer, then went out back to see what all the hub-bub was about with the outdoor games. They had horseshoes, cornhole, volleyball, bocce, a firepit, numerous picnic tables, and a spot for a live band. How cool! We played cornhole for a bit, then eventually were seated on their outdoor patio. Their menu had the usual pub fare, with a local food twist, and we each decided on an order of fish n chips, clams casino, seared scallops, and their hand-cut fries with short rib gravy on top. Everything was delicious and we cleaned our plates. I would go back here in a heart beat and the only complaint is that it's not closer to where I live (but that is my own damn fault).

This is my first review, and I regret that it's a bad one. I'm 48 years young, so you can imagine that I've been to my fair share of bars over the years. And dealt with some really poor bartenders. I've been a "local", and a regular customer of the Rathskellar since the old building - 20 something years ago. I can't believe that they choose to employ a barmaid as poor as "Jill". I think that's her name. She's the one with the partially shaved head. Mind you....I have nothing against head shaving (I have 3 daughters, and they have lots of tats and piercings). This girl is the worst bartender I have ever witnessed in my life. My wife and I (of 26 years) watched and waited while she ignored us repeatedly, and I finally asked if we could leave. I have never had such a hard time getting a drink in my life. It's a busy bar, and I understand that, but this girl has a real knack for socializing with everyone but the customers she should be focused on.....RIGHT IN FRONT OF HER. It's too bad that she made our experience very stressful instead of a nice night out. We hardly get a chance to go out, since we've been raising our kids for the last 25+ years. The bill was. $120+ by the way. This crazy chick should NOT be the face of this otherwise upstanding establishment. Go there if you choose, and see what I mean...We weren't the only ones who were pissed off. And it wasn't that busy.....

The definition of a two star review mirrors my exact thoughts about this place, "Meh. Ive experienced better." Firstly, I think that for the area, ANY restaurant that isn't a chain, or a take out place is a great addition. Now on to my experience. I went with a party of 5 on a Saturday evening- so the place was a little crowded at our arrival and was packed when we left. Food - They have a list of sandwiches on their menu. Apparently some of them are served during lunch times, and not at dinner. This fact is not mentioned on the menu (annoying). Their menu is primarily steak/beef and seafood.I don't eat either, really, and ordered a chicken club. I subbed out the chips for french fries. The meal was okay, I mean.. a chicken club is a chicken club. My dad got the days special: steak stir fry. The steak in his dish looked exactly like steak ums, and was gray. Not brown. Not red. Gray. And who uses shaved steak in a stir fry?? It was pretty clear from our own experience, and from tables around us, that the star of their menu is the fries. They ARE good. Service - What annoyed me about my server was when she brought our meals out, she realized she didn't sub out my chips for french fries. Instead of just giving me my meal with chips, and get a side of fries for me, she took my meal away to fix it. Which would have been just fine if she was quick about it. She was gone for a good 7 minutes. And there's nothing more annoying than having everyone at the table eating, while you sit there waiting for your meal. Im sure she was busy and all, but really... how much is a handful of chips that you couldn't have just gave them to me? Kind of left a bad taste in my mouth.. pun intended- as by the time she came back my sandwich was no longer hot. Atmosphere - Its new. Its nice. Its supposed to be like a speakeasy inside.. Its not. Its typical family restaurant decor. Was it great? No. Was it good? Yeah. Will I be back? If Im lost on those backroads and get hungry, maybe. But probably not.

I hadn't been to the Rathskeller since I was a small child - sometime in the 70's. but I have been eager to get down there since it's re-opening. I went early evening with a couple of friends for appetizers and a couple of drinks before we moved on to part two of the evening. The wait staff is very friendly and the grounds are an awesome spread of horseshoe pits and other fun group activity entertainment options. We had the fried oysters, mussels and oysters Rockefeller. The fried oysters were buttery smooth delicious and golden brown. They were drizzled with tobasco aioli, mint and lime and had a side of fennel slaw...fantastic! The mussels were sublime. They were sauteed with beer, bacon, sweetcorn, tomato, and tarragon which provided an excellent dipping opportunity for the order of extra bread you will need upon tasting this sauce. The Oysters Rockefeller are broiled with fresh herbs, butter, and absinthe and taste as good as they sound. We were not expecting to order all seafood, nor did we expect for it to be so delicious - A++ to the folks at The Rathskeller for doing it right. I will likely upgrade this review to 5 stars after future visits - but wasn't prepared to go that high on one visit with only ordering appetizers. There is so much opportunity for fun and good times here that I see it becoming a regular stop.

Great food, great service. A little loud if you want to have a conversation. We were there at supper time so it may be quitter at lunch. Very clean and interesting décor. I have been there in the summer and there is great outside seating. I had a beet salad with salmon that was cooked perfectly. I would definitely go back. They were kid friendly and had a decent kids menu. A little pricey but the portions were good.

Waited almost an hour to be seated in a booth that was open the entire time on a Tuesday night. There was a huge area power outage and this was one of the few restaurants open for business. Our server was great. Caesar salad was ordinary and beet/goat cheese salad was tasty w hazelnuts and figs but was lacking dressing so flavors were not "tied together." Oysters were tasty but better at other nearby favorite spots. Performers were great and bar looked to be a happening night spot. Overall, not worth it - many other area restaurants with reliably delicious, local fare that are well worth waiting an hour for. Such a disappointment when a new dining experience backfires!

OK, so I've been cycling past this place for a couple of years and seeing as how they've sunk a good chunk of money into renovating the place, I finally decided to give it a try. My wife and I decided to sit outside on the patio, as it was a beautiful early summer afternoon. Being so far out in the boonies, it was quiet and you could only hear Mother Nature's ambient sounds in the surrounding woods. I tried the Rathskellar draft special, which was a raspberry wheat and my wife had a Guinness. Both were fresh and very thirst quenching. For starters, I ordered a half dozen Oysters, they had three choices, so I got two of each. Fresh, cold and with the right amount of brininess, they didn't last long on the ice covered plate they were served on. We also ordered the Beet Salad, which turned out to be a wonderful combination of Goat Cheese, sliced Dates, Hazelnuts, Mixed Greens and Roasted Beets all tossed in a Honey-Lime Vinaigrette. I'll be getting this again. For dinner, my wife chose a Steak, Portobello Mushroom, Onion, Arugula and Bleu Cheese Wrap, which kind of shocked me, because my wife never orders steak. She absolutely loved it. I ordered the Hanger Steak, which came with Mashed Potatoes, Sauteed Zucchini & Summer Squash, and the kicker was a Bleu Cheese Fondue drizzled over the sliced steak. By now, I'm thinking to myself, why didn't I stop in here before? Service was good, but the waitress never introduced herself when we first sat down. A tiny flaw in an otherwise stellar Rathskellar inauguration.

In the midst of the 2015 winter from hell in RI my friend and I decided before the next storm closed in to escape on Valentine's Day for lunch. In RI if you have to drive more than 10 minutes to a restaurant it is "out of the way". I must say this is a bit of a drive for us natives but well worth the effort. The restaurant was busy because of the "holiday" and an afternoon URI basketball game. The menu offers mostly pub fare but today their specials for V day included a Cajun gumbo which I had to try. I looked around at fellow diners and every dish looked wonderful and piping hot(I insist on having my food the temperature of lava). The gumbo was comprised of tender pieces of white meat chicken, sausage, rice, and fried okra. The best part were the fried oysters which were melt in the mouth delicious. The service was friendly and prompt but not overbearing. I am looking forward to another visit to this wonderful place albeit a little out of the way.

This place keeps getting better and better! Even though the summer season has ended, the Rathskeller continues to entertain and deliver some great food and drinks. I was at the Fall Fest last weekend and it was a blast. We competed in the cornhole tournament and got to taste the delicious Octoberfest fare in the tent down back. They have a pint night planned tonight that I am very excited for. They have had some menu changes and I love the newly added German Sausage plate. My favorites still continue to rock as well. I still put their Reuben (only served until 5pm) against anyone out there. They have added a Raw Bar that offers some great local oysters, littlenecks, and jumbo shrimp. I enjoy hitting up the Buck-A-Shuck from 3-5 Monday thru Thursday. Keep it up Rathskeller!

I ate here last night for my friend's birthday. I did not know where we were going, as we took the back roads, and at one point I thought, "is this a real restaurant or are we just going to eat in someones house and get raped and killed in the middle of nowhere?" Well, luckily it was not that at all! Suddenly after driving through all residential streets, a large illuminated building appears with a packed parking lot. Despite the number of cars on a Friday night, we didn't have to wait! Maybe it was the surprise of the location, or the lack of expectations, or perhaps the good company with me...but I thought this was top notch! It's a tavern and restaurant with a 1930s theme and art, so basically a big pub, in the sticks of Charlestown. So putting that as your baseline--now you can rate it. My friend and I had the pork chop special, what a portion!!! I had not expected that, so good, we took home because it was so much. My friend the birthday girl got the surf turf which was portioned fairly and looked incredible, according to her it tasted just as great. We wanted to try the "famous fries" for an appetizer which I now actually think should be famous. This is a hidden gem. I don't write a lot of 5-star reviews. Maybe it was just a great night, but I was impressed, and I can't wait to have an excuse to drive down and go back! Theres plenty of other things on the menu I would like to try.

Fabulous!! Such a joy to have the Rathskeller back. The staff and management are friendly and engaged. The food still has the standards from yesteryear with the freshness of new updated recipes. Great food, great atmosphere just what we needed around here. Welcome back Rathskeller.

No.

Food was good, oysters were great and the backyard game ambiance was certainly entertaining. Would def. return.

Hard to find, but worth the trip! Great food. Bar service very attentive. Good Happy Hours too! A local spot worth visiting. Pricing very reasonable.

Great meal after a long, hot day. The cheese fries, clams casino, and whiskey selection were highlights.
