Overpriced, small portions, fried clams are gritty. If you want great seafood, go to the Matunick Oyster Bar, or the Two Ten in Wakefield, aunt Carey's is good too. The best clam cakes in all of New England is the KP grille in Rehoboth, MA. Light cakes loaded with clams!

Just picked up lunch there .... Super disappointed !! Ordered fish sandwich ....lettuce was brown and no tarter sauce !!! Grilled cheese had cheese that wasn't melted , cheeseburger dripping with grease ...... Not was I was hoping for :(

Oh my gosh never again! I paid $15 for the most measly lobster roll that came with no sides or anything. The butter was orange! What kind of butter is orange? What are there's people feeding me? And one pathetic pickle on the side. I took a picture, the roll looks bigger in the picture than it actually is. Also the meat didn't taste that good. I'm from Connecticut ok?! Like, I get better lobster rolls for less INLAND. Don't waste your money.

Exactly what I was looking for...after a day at the beach all I ever want to find is a simple little fried seafood shack. Voila. The Hitching Post hit the spot. I asked for some fried clam strips and hot sauce on the side. The teenage "chef" curiously asked if I'd like to try his specialty of frying up some jalapenos with the clam strips...I gladly accepted and am almost regretful that I said yes. It was ridiculous...thin slices of jalapenos battered and fried, mixed in with the clam strips. Now I'm going to be chasing that dream at all future clam shacks. Even the hot dog that my mom wanted was a darn good hotdog. Grilled up with some caring little knife notches to let the juices flow and served on a new england style bun. (Written in 2012, just realizing this sat in my account un-posted)

I've been here a few times and the clam fritters are so good that I have eaten them knowing full well that I'm mildly allergic to clams. My mom went to the Hitching Post today and said it was "the best clam chowder" she has ever had, which is high praise from a clamaholic like her. The location of this place is convenient and the long-time family ownership makes this a local tradition. I've noticed some of those giving poor reviews talk about things like French fries, chicken sandwiches, or cheeseburgers, which really are not what you should be ordering at a place that sells generous proportions of fresh seafood. In short if you like generous portions of fresh, delicious seafood (especially clam fritters and clam chowder) definitely go to the Hitching Post. If you want to complain about a chicken sandwich, go to KFC.

How anybody can give this abomination of a restaurant a good review is beyond me. I dont mind paying for expensive food if it is actually good but the food here is embarrassing. I went there with friends, we were a party of 4 so we ordered a variety of items on their menu and everything was terrible. The chicken fingers were clearly frozen and microwaved, there were only 4 of them in the $7 order!! The $10 cheeseburger was bland and made my wife nauseous, probably bad meat. I ordered the "hot" lobster roll for $15 and OMG what a joke! It wasn't even hot, the lobster meat had a tough texture and they just put it in a cheap Hot Dog roll that fell apart. We also had the $12 half order of whole belly clams which was another mistake. The clams just tasted like batter and were served on a tiny dixie plate, the portion was pathetically small. My friend ordered the clam chowder which I didn't try but it looked gross and he did not enjoy it. Then to top it all off, the waitress handed us a bill for $77 and we paid with $100 bill and only got $8 back, when we asked why that happened she said the bill was for the wrong amount and didn't give us back any money... sketchy! We talked to the manager and she just went in the defense and denied how sad their food is. I don't get how anyone can't take pride in this horrific restaurant. Avoid at all costs!

My family has been living in charlestown for decades and the hitching post has always been a summer stop off as its just down the street from our home. I brought my husband here for lunch last week and was very disappointed in the quality of the food. We both had the cheeseburgers he had the onion rings and I had the fries, and we ordered soft drinks. Nothing had any flavor and everything was clearly frozen... The soft drinks were flat and the ice had melted into the drinks. For a lunch meal that was way over $20 I say skip the hitching post and take the drive to watch hill for St. Clairs Annex... same type of food but much better service and quality of food.

[Note: I'm tempted to just write "CLAM FRITTERS!!!" over and over again until I reach some sort of character limit, but will instead try to be more informative.] I've been coming here for about 30 years, and whenever I go to a different ocean town, one of my main goals is to see if I can find clam fritters (a.k.a. clam cakes) as good as the Hitching Post's; I generally don't even like seafood, but these fritters are an exception! If for some reason you can't live off of fritters alone, the burgers have always been a good "shack-style" dinner, and the lobster rolls have been a hit with the wife. The upgrades to the property over the years have been well done, including supplementing the picnic tables with a nice garden area in the back and a small, indoor dining room. If I had to give some advice/feedback, I'd say: 1. Be aware that the chowder is RI style and is clear; if you like your clams to be clothed by New England style cream, you may be shocked to see naked clams swimming in the broth. 2. Don't come here looking for a salad (not that we normally do, but once you bring a guest on a more restricted diet, you'll notice it's not on the menu). 3. Because of going to the Hitching Post since birth, I spent years of my life getting blank stares on other seashore trips asking restaurants if they have "clam fritters" instead of looking for "clam cakes". All in all, a perfect place to stop at after a day at the beach (ordering outdoors means no need to worry about wet/sandy bathing suits or beach hair)! ;-) P.S. CLAM FRITTERS!!!

I have been going to the Hitching Post for fifty five years and it is the best restaurant for Clam Fritters I have ever found. The lobster rolls are also good and there might well be other things that are great. I don't know because when I find someone who makes something better than I have ever had I stick with that one item. SO if you love Rhode Island clam fritters( aka as clam cakes in less sophisticated circles) this is the place for you. They are the best I have ever found and I now live three hundred miles away in Baltimore MD but whenever I am anywhere near the Hitching Post on Old Post Road in Charleston and it is summer, I am dragging who ever is with me to get some of the clam fritters that are to die for.

I've eaten just about everywhere in south county but have never been to the hitching post. After my experience today I don't think I'll go back. My chicken sandwich was a piece of pre cooked chicken on two slices of soggy white toast with a piece of iceberg lettuce. The chowder was among the worst I've had in RI to date. The fries were soggy and my sister in law found a giant hair in her fish sandwich. Top this off with the fact that we had to wait nearly 30 min for this horrible food. My wife asked if they were catching her fish! Finally my terrible meal was nearly 30$. Far too pricey for such a terrible meal. No wonder it said no refunds on the window. People must complain all the time.

I've been going to this restaurant for over 10 years, but I will not be coming back! I don't know if it's new management or new employees but their service has definitely gone down. The portions sizes have drastically decreased and the price has gone up! I was so disappointed the last time I went, there were barely any fries & cole slaw on my flounder platter. I'm sure I'll be able to find a new seafood place that gives me my money's worth!

Ok food lobster roll was very good and fresh RI chowder was bland and watery. Only decent food for that area other wise u need to go to westerly or Wakefield. Nice place to eat outside.

Let me just say this: it is a long cold winter waiting for the first Friday in May to be able to gorge ourselves on the "Hitching Post Special". True Rhode Island clam chowder, chopped quahogs in the fritters, golden lightly branded fried fish, DELISH cole slaw, golden fries!

Excellent RI style clam chowder (clear) perfect amount of potatoes, onions, and plenty of clams. Lobster roll was heaped with claw meat and lightly dressed so the flavor was PERFECT. Fries were tasty and fresh, and other roadside food was great. Very nice outdoor seating area as well as indoor dining. Wait time can get long, but well worth it!

Ok, this pains me to do this because I'm local and a big fan, but I have to. Went to Hitching Post last night with the family, looking for some fritters and chowder, and had a bad experience. I'll try to be brief and to the point, but just let me start with this....I don't usually complain about food. I will eat just about anything. In fact, I will eat a taco, sandwich, or an entire fried chicken off the back of a truck if I am hungry. Anyway, the cakes (fritters) were mediocre but ok. The chower was terrible. The lack of seasoning made it taste like a fishy clam broth, and salt & pepper did not help. Neither my wife and I could finish it which is odd for us because we both love clear chowder. We were really dissappointed. I know it's the end of the summer but please guys, please don't fall into a bad trend. You're one of the very few local places left that we enjoy for this type of food.

Ok fried clams/scallops, great clam fritters. Extra star for the nice little garden out back with tables and chairs to eat them on. The lobster rolls looked great and i wish i'd ordered that, so I hope to be back there this summer to try those. Service was a little slow on a busy fourth of july weekend. But a solid place to stop after a nice day at the beach when you are craving something fried.

Although my favorite Rhode Island summer sea food stop is Aunt Carrie's in Point Judith, the Hitching Post is not a bad alternative if you don't have time to drive all the way out there. While no clam fritters will ever equal Aunt Carrie's these are definitely acceptable and superior to anything you will ever find in a chain restaurant.

Great burgers. Great roadside stand type of place. Open in the summer. That said seems to be pretty expensive for a drive up place, lobster roll is very good also. Can't beat it after the beach! Throwback but in a good way !

I love this place. When I get back east from California, if I am in the Charlestown area I always make a special trip here. I have been going here since I was kid and its wonderful the family keeps the business going. What do I go here for? CLAM FRITTERS! You can't get 'em on the West Coast like this! Also love their chowder, whole belly and fried clams and lobster rolls. The Hitching Post is open in the summer only and primarily does take-out. There is a nice grassy area with picnic tables where u can have a relaxing lunch or dinner. The restaurant is set far enough back from Route 1 which greatly reduces the traffic noise. I hope to get their again this summer :)

There for me in my time of chowder, clam cakes, and ice cream need. Chowder comes RI style only - clear broth. Clamcakes/claim fritters better than average - lots of clams, crunchy shell, soft inside. Enjoyed eating outside - quality gardens. Can't beat locale on Post Rd. Service was fast. Counter help helpful enough. Nothing fancy about the menu, but your typical seafood classics. More creativity to menu and some lawn games for the garden would have bumped up to 4 stars.

My friends and I ate in the dining room (actually, the little-known dining room) on Saturday. I had a lobster roll, which was very tasty. It's the best lobster salad I've eaten since the Mermaid closed. I am very, very much in favor of the clam fritters. I'd never heard of such a thing before, and well, yum-a-riffic. However, for me the standout were the onion rings: 100% perfection-salty and crunchy and tasty and yummy. They were like the Platonic ideal of onion rings. I would definitely go back, and I have recommended it already.

I have been a customer of this restaurant since i was a kid and as of this year 2015 the clam fritters have changed. This place had the absolute best clam fritters until i tried them this year. In the past these fritters were on the smaller side loaded with clams and very light and moist excellent clam flavor and just about melted in your mouth. When i returned this year i found them to be very disappointing they were $3 more for a 1/2 dozen twice the size they were in the past but very doughy hardly any clams and lacked their original clammy flavor from the past. In my opinion i loved the way they made them in the past. I have to say that is not my favorite clam fritter spot anymore and will have to explore to find another restaurant that makes them the way the original Hitching Post used to make them.

I think now a 3rd generation in charge - the most delicious clam cakes and RI chowder around. There is a small indoor seating area and they do a great job with takeout. The food came a lot faster than other places like the Breachway in Weekapaug, and the servers were super friendly - coming out a couple of times to check on us and make conversation. The lobster rolls were also delicious. No booze.

Have driven by for 8 years and finally stopped. The meal was quite tasty and service was good. Scallop roll and onion rings were top notch. The outdoor dining area is pretty and clean. There's even a garden oasis tucked away from the busy road. It's the perfect spot to stop after a beach day or outing.

The food took a while, but it prepared fresh for you. The chowder was perfect and the fried shrimp were great. My wife had the fish sandwich, which she is still raving about. The reading was light and not greasy at all. As usual, the kids had burgers, which they said were better than "daddy burgers." We'll be going back.

The food here might be good, it might even be great. They might have the best darn fried clams in all of Charlestown, RI. I will never know. Because after more than 40 minutes waiting for our food, we left. Our waitress seemed kind, if possibly a bit simple, and although she did pop in once to tell us our food was coming, for the most part she disappeared for 15+ minutes at a time. I began to think we had been sucked into a black hole of fried food when out of desperation we actually opened the kitchen door and asked about our order and the kitchen workers had no idea we had even ordered. So what happened? Did she eat my lobster roll? Give my kids' french fries to a passing motorist on Rt.1? We decided to leave at the 45 minute mark and only then did she come running after us as we walked out. She still did not have our food, and she was completely perplexed as to why we were leaving. We got some sad slices of pizza down the road. So the moral of the story is if you go here and the older, kindly, but clueless waitress is your server, just leave and get pizza.
