Today I had take-out from Tong-D's at approximately 2 o' clock. I never would have decided to come here, despite the fact that I have been living in Barrington for a few years now, were it not for the fact that I was a. on my bike and b. going to Shaw's. There is no way of knowing that this place exists from the road! I am surprised they stay in business. I was greeted by a young man who was very polite and helpful. Their menu was surprisingly limited, but that is fairly common for a more upscale restaurant, so I kind of had the hopes that this would indeed be a little more upscale. The interior was very clean, modern furniture, sparkly accents, and high fashion magazines in the waiting area. :) I ordered the Garlic Bok Choy dish with tofu. My food was done in 5 minutes. That set off a little warning for me, but I was already charmed by the young man, so I felt content with my purchase and set off. So, unpacking my food, my appetizer of 2 leek spring rolls are delicately sitting on top of a doily in a tiny little box which was very cute and tasty, and yes a little bland, but at least they were crunchy and cute. My main dish tasted like it had no sauce! And half the box was filled with rice. It was so bland I didn't finish it :( I also didn't understand that there was no choice of noodles or rice, because none of the other menu items had noodles. I really wanted to like this place! I won't say that I dislike them quite yet, because I want to give them another chance. So I just feel so-so about them.

Solid, but not great. As other reviewers have said, dishes here are not spiced/seasoned very well, compared to really good Thai. Spring rolls and calamari appetizers are good, fried won tons are mediocre. Pineapple fried rice is good, the other entrees we've had are just OK.

I have been traveling back and fort from LA to east coast. I have trying so many Thai food all over the country. Tong-D is the best place to go. They have the best service, everybody is so nice. And the food is so authentic. I have read some bull reviews about this place, and they are probably from the people from the other thai restarant who wanna destroy the reputation of this place. Dont believe them, You'd better try by yourself and you would know that Tong-D is way much better than other Thai restaurant in town.

I like the food here a lot. They are especially sympathetic to my vegetarian diet, when I ask them to alter dishes. I'm a big fan of the Pad See-Ew and the Pad Thai here.

What a nice place to have right in Barrington, where I live! The dining room is very pleasant and the staff unfailingly sweet. I love the food. Their curry sauces are delicious. The portions won't gag you. They had soft-shell crabs!! Reasonable prices. It's the best Asian option in the area. You won't be sorry.

Been here many times, taken all of my friends and family, everyone agrees this place is a 10! Don't leave without trying the coconut rice - I don't even like coconut and I'm a huge fan! But you really can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Go and enjoy!

My girlfriend and I both love thai food, and of the dozen or so places we've been to, this is undoubtedly the best. The sauteed green beam appetizer is incredible, and for entrees my favorites are the garlic choy and the yellow curry. All of the food is delicious. The setting is pretty casual, since I think they mostly rely on take-out, but it's still nice-looking for a neighborhood restaurant. The service has always been good as well, and even the drinks are pretty tasty (try the mai tai). Prices are what you would expect for thai, mostly in the $10-$15 range, but it's totally worth it. The only bad this about Tong D is that all thai you have thereafter will seem worse.

One of the few good eat-in/ takeout restaurants (or any kind of restaurant) in Barrington - the food is really tasty and the staff is extremely pleasant and enthusiastic. Looks like a walk-in clinic from the street but it is rather cozy once you get inside. We will definitely be ordering from Tong-D on those nights that we don't feel like cooking!

I would actually give this place 3.5 stars if that were an option. We called ahead on a Saturday night for 6:15 and when we got there, the place was empty. After we had been there for a while, the place started to fill in, but were a bit surprise that it was so empty at that time on a Saturday. What I really liked was that there were a lot of options for me. Being a vegetarian it is sometimes hard to find a place that has more than one choice if any at all. At Tong-D, practically every menu item had a tofu option in place of the meat. I was very excited to try some new things! The food came very quickly. Not sure if that's a good or bad thing, but it was kind of surprising to get our food that quick. I ordered the Yellow Curry with Tofu and Coconut Rice. It was ok. I was hoping for some amazing flavors, but it was just ok-not all that flavorful. I appreciated that they had an organic beer choice-Wolavers Pale Ale. My husband ordered Crispy Pad Thai. He kind of felt the same about it-just ok. He'd had better at other places, so he rated it a 3. They didn't have a kids menu, so we ordered two starters for the kids. Philly Cheese Wrapped and Crispy Wontons for the kids. They both really loved the PCW! It was nice to go out and have options for the kids other than grilled cheese, pizza, or burger, ya know? Overall the experience was good, but to say it's "Fine Thai Cuisine" well that's a bit of a stretch. We would go there again. It's close to home and has a lot of menu options.

I actually had a really good time eating here with my family. The food was comparable to some of the better thai places in Boston and the waiting staff was friendly and talkative. Coming from Boston, I have definitely had better Thai food (at cheaper prices), but I was really impressed with Tong-D, being located in good ol' Barrington. Give it a shot. Food: 3 stars Surprise: 4 stars

This Thai restaurant has superb service and fantastic food! Visited this place almost every weekend for the last four years and have never been disappointed! If I could take this place with me the next area I move to I would do it in a heartbeat. I would move this place before I would move my own home

  • Ed W.

I agree with Laura and Christina...absolute hidden gem. I had the peanut massamam curry with chicken as recommended and it was great. My wife had the boar with spicy basil, also fantastic with a nice spice to it. The coconut rice was pretty good too. The kids got the pad thai and that was very good. This is a place that I will definitely be visiting again....especially since it is only about 6 minutes away from Bristol.

Consistently fresh ingredients and great service. You actually get the spice level requested, not a watered-down version. Love the Flank steak in any dish but especially in Panang Curry. It's tender, not chewy, and there's plenty of it! Best Thai place locally with unbeatable prices.

We've always gotten great carry-out from Tong-D. Orders always correct. A little frustrating you have to use cash for anything under $15-20 though. Overall a great choice for Asian food, by far the best in Barrington

Update: I decided to give Tong-D another chance last night. I ordered the Fried Won-ton and Krispy Pad-Thai. My wife got the coconut calamari and some sort of chicken dish (don't recall the name). All items were very good. The krispy Pad-Thai was tasty, but a little out there on the texture side. Next time, I will try the normal Pad-Thai. Added bonus to this were shrimp included in the chicken dish. No blandness in last night's meal.

Glad this place moved in! I've been back twice in two months and will certainly return. I like the feel of the place. There's space to move and not be too close to neighboring tables. The decor is dim and lovely - some might find the swarovski crystal sculpture dangling in the center of the dining room cheesy but I dig it. Comfy, simple chairs! But seriously, get rid of the miller lite tabletop ads on the reverse side of the dessert list. Service was attentive but timid. The food comes out lightning fast... a little too fast. The menu is a brief two pages, but that's just fine by me because I'm there for the curry. I've had the red, yellow, and mango curries. I noticed they used canned pineapple but everything else was very fresh and crisp. Love the coconut rice choice. The scallion pancake appetizer was tasty with a fantastic peanut sauce; my dining companion said he wanted to bathe in it. For dessert - the fried ice cream had sauces that were too cloying but the fried banana was great - ask for a side of coconut ice cream. Prices work for me - got an appetizer, 2 entrees, 2 drinks, and a dessert for 50 bucks.

I've gotten takeout from here a handful of times and it has always been good! A nice change from getting pizza when we don't feel like cooking. We love the pineapple fried rice and beef teriyaki. I find the food to have a good flavor and it is not greasy like I find Chinese food to be.

It's been a while, and we've ordered from here several times since our first experience. I now think that Tong-D has perfectly acceptable food. Somehow family and/or our Thai craving kicks in on Monday's when our preferred spot Siam Square in Riverside is closed. We order Tong-D and have had our Thai craving satisfied.

My friend and I were driving around Barrington to find somewhere to eat. After looking yelp, we decided to try Tong-D. What a pleasant surprise! I love stumbling upon new restaurants when they're actually good! We really liked the Pad Thai and Mango Curry dishes we had. The Thai iced coffee was okay, not the best I've ever had. Most importantly, save room for the fried bananas. They come with 4 pieces and ice cream, making it perfect to share with someone. I've been back several times and foresee many more trips in my future.

  • Sam A.

Agree with most posts. "Want to love this place, but cant", "Taste is blah", "Go to Siam Square in Riverside". I would say it is this is not even thai food. It is very westernized, maybe for our Barrington Elders's taste-buds. Very very blah. Thai staff, great friendly service, but tried it once, and no more... too bad.

My family eats the fresh rolls like they are vitamins. We've had fun ordering whatever the staff recommends and we have always been very happy with the selections. The standby Pad Thai and the likes are good but what fun is that? Tong-D (trans: Good as gold) seems to be a bit more authentic and as such the standbys seem a little bland so have sum fun and order blindly and keep an open mind. They do a good job.

My friend and I went to Tong-D for lunch on a Sunday. We were the only ones there, so the service was super-fast. Like another reviewer, I've never been to Thailand, so I don't know authentic from Americanized. I did, however, spend my first 47 years in New York City, eating at virtually every kind of restaurant. And I have to say that our experience at Tong-D was much more consistently palatable than it seems to have been for other reviewers. We kept it simple: pad thai for me and pad see ew for my friend. Both were cooked just right (for us): noodles neither mushy nor gummy; sauces tasty but not overpowering; overall deliciously satisfying. And then we had dessert: mango sticky rice. Yummy! The perfect balance of sweet and slightly salty rice with perfectly ripe mango. (It's a seasonal special, so it's not always on the menu.) As others have mentioned, the staff were attentive and friendly, and helpful in making decisions. My friend and I are vegan, and there was no problem communicating our dietary requirements and getting our dishes egg-free and without fish sauce. The dining room was very pleasant, and surprising to find in a building behind Ace Hardware. All in all, I give Tong-D two thumbs up. :)

  • Andrew A.

Tong-D just opened behind Ace Hardware on County Road, and it is a very welcome addition in Barrington. We got take-out and found it just so-so, but there was a lot of potential and it was still their first week. The pad thai was satisfying but had too little chicken (only a few pieces) and the noodles were a bit gummy. My wife got a bunch of appetizers - some rice-paper wrapped shrimp, which were fine but unremarkable, some coconut calamari which was basically the same thing you'd get in a mediocre Italian restaurant, and some very tasty Tom Ka Gai (coconut/lime/chicken soup). The soup was definitely the highlight. We'll go back, but I'd love to see them narrow down the menu to some more distinctive Thai food, and drop the throw-away appetizers.

We finally had a chance to eat here, and it was great! So glad they are nearby in Barrington. So far we have only tried the fried rice and the pad thai, but we look forward to getting through the entire menu!

Nothing wrong with the Thia food here, but go 10 minutes down the road to Siam Square in Riverside and it blows this place away!

I wanted to love this place, but I just can't.The staff is super friendly....unfortunately the food is just SO blah. There is no other way to describe it. I've tried it a few times, but each time I was seriously disappointed, each time every dish was beyond bland.

  • Sheri L.

We tried this place as we discovered it in the coupon book. We will definitely go back. Authentic? Who knows or cares. It's good food, reasonably priced (especially for Barrington), and it's different from burgers or pizza, which is what we wanted...something different. The servers were very attentive, but a simple directive from us that we were not in a hurry, and we wanted drinks and an appetizer first was sufficient for her to not hover, but she paid attention and caught our eye immediately when we were ready to order. Food came fast, my order was definitely HOT, it was chili steak, and my husband ordered his specifically more spicy. They are very accomodating. I'm sure people find the food bland because if they make it too hot there will be complaints. Simply ask the server to tell the chef to spice it up a bit, no problem. We definitely plan to return.

Thai food is my favorite food, but this food is not the best. Most of the dishes are too bland, without enough flavor. There was one dish in particular that seemed to have little spice in it (I think it was the ginger chicken, but I'm not sure). The coconut milk dishes are not as rich as I'm accustomed to. The menu is very short -- I've never seen such a small selection of dishes in a restaurant. On the positive side, all the ingredients are fresh. The dining room is elegant but has a spare quality. The chairs are wide, but they're unpadded, and for some reason I found them a little uncomfortable. The best Thai restaurants I have found in the area are Siam Square in Riverside and Thai Taste in Swansea. Added later: I should say that I have never been to Thailand, so I can't really say that I know what authentic Thai food tastes like. However, I've eaten in a dozen or more Thai restaurants here in the U.S., so I have some experience. This is the blandest Thai food I have eaten. If you read all the reviews, you'll find the word "bland" over and over again. As of this writing, Yelp is filtering (hiding) 23 reviews. Several of them look like shill reviews, but some of them look authentic. Yelp's review filter is out of control. I can see them filtering ten percent of the reviews, but half of them? That's crazy.

Delicious Thai food! I've been here 4-5 times over the last year and have always been very impressed with the quality of their dishes. It is clear they make an effort with the presentation of their food. The restaurant is small, but they have decorated in a modern way. Definitely a hidden gem!

Surprisingly delicious. Having lived and survived on Thai in Chicago, I was expecting to be disappointed... This place is DIVINE! Flavors are not for those looking for heavy on the palette (ie much salt, heavy curry, etc) as many a US Thai spot. Not stereotypical Thai preps, much more gourmet--subtle. Portions are not large, but 'tis a well balanced, intricately flavored dining experience. Bravo! Favorites include the beef salad, tilapia with lemongrass, spicy basil, spicy green curry.

  • Sean K.

Consistently great food. Wish the menu was a little larger, but the food is always fresh so I guess that is the sacrifice. Appetizers (calamari, dumplings are great). All dishes I have tried are fantastic. Unfortunately, sometimes the limited selection means a favorite entree might not on the menu. Great service, nice owners.

    (4)
  • Nan B.

Ambience -- pleasant. (Chairs COMFORTABLE!) Service -- polite, if a trifle slow. Food -- excellent on my side of the table (Spicy Basil Pork with Fried Rice). Others in my party were not as satisfied, unfortunately, but still interested in returning!

We have only dined at Tong-D for lunch, enjoying the Prix Fixe Lunch offering. For $9 you receive a Green Salad with Sesame Dressing, which is a small-sized salad with a tomato slice, onion strips, and carrot shreds, and a very tasty but not too bold Sesame Dressing. You also get your choice of an appetizer from a list Chicken Lemongrass Tom Yum Soup, Spring Roll, Chicken Wing, Dumpling, Edamame, and a Chicken Coconut-Galanga Soup. And finally, you get to choose from a nice selection of main courses. I have not been able to choose anything other than the Chicken Lemongrass Tom Soup since it is one of my favorite Thai dishes and I like to sample it and compare to other restaurant's offerings. Tong-D's offering is quite solid - up there with some of the best I've had. I have had several main courses, including the Spicy Basil Leaf with Chicken, the Salmon Teriyaki, the Spicy Green Curry, and samples of the Three Delights. All of these main courses have been quite good and easily represent what I am looking for - creative, spicy, and well-presented dishes that make me want to eat Thai food every day - even for breakfast sometimes. The inside is well-designed, clean, though a little on the smaller side, the wait staff has always been good, and you can get in-and-out for lunch in under an hour. For those seeking an adult beverage, there do not appear to be any draft beer choices, however there is a good selection of bottled beer including some of my favorites - Singha, Chang, and Sapporo. We do attend during the slow times of the day and rarely see Tong-D at full capacity, perhaps because it is a little hidden from the main drag, so we always get at table quickly but, in all, for $9, the creative and tasty lunch deal is a nice deal that is hard to beat. Why not give it a try?

I stand by 4 star rating for Tong-D (only because it takes something uber special to get 5 stars), but today I tried the Lemongrass Tom Yum soup. The soup was the appetizer for my prixe fixe lunch and was out of this world! If I was at the restaurant (I got carry out) I would have told them to cancel my pad thai order and bring me more soup. It was that good! Do yourself a favor and give this delectable appetizer a try!

I love love love this place. Clean, super nice waitstaff, and delicious food. My go to is the Garlic wok with shrimp. If you want it a little spicier, they're more than happy to accommodate you. Always an enjoyable experience.

My wife and I come here pretty regularly, usually during the week, and we're always served quickly. There is a younger female server that usually serves us and she is always nice and smiling and has given us great suggestions when we've asked for them. The decor is very pleasant and tasteful too with I imagine is cultural for whatever food I am eating (Thai?) I am not big on spicy dishes but my wife is and we haven't come across a dish yet that we have not liked.

We've ordered pick-up from Tong-D a handful of times and are so happy with this reliably fresh and delicious neighborhood Thai restaurant. The fresh rolls are perfectly crisp and fresh. The pad Thai is great and all of curries I've ordered today have been flavorful with high-quality ingredients. This is sure to be our go-to restaurant for pick-up on nights when we don't have time to make dinner.

We returned to Tong d last night and it was even better than our lunch visit. My husband and I love Thai food and this was by far the best we have ever had. All the food is prepared with great care and presented beautifully. The beef teriyaki appetizer was outstanding and the chicken Pad Thai was excellent. I met my husband there for dinner after an exhausting work week and it could not have been better. The atmosphere was relaxing, the service was great and the Mai Tai was exceptionally good. I can't wait to have family come to town so I can share this delightful restaurant with them!

I have been getting takeout from Tong-d for a few years now and it is generally one of the most consistent restaurants of its caliber in terms of quality. The food is not revolutionary but it is good, with fresh ingredients. Now I have never dined at Tong-D so I can't vouch for the in-house experience, but I always feel like I get a good value to go. Thai food is one I often crave so it is really great to have a consistent option so close to home. We love the fresh spring rolls, the coconut rice, the curries, and the pad Thai.

This place is really cute, clean, and offers some really good Thai food! their prix fixe menu is 9 bucks for soup, salad and an entree. Pretty good considering you can very easily leave with left overs. The chicken dumpling soup is so good! The place is kind of hard to find, tucked away behind shaws/cvs, but once inside it is very clean and bright. Ample parking, and comfortable waiting area. The servers are very friendly, attentive and make sure you always have water! Really enjoyed my lunch here- it was a bit slow for lunch time, but it was a Monday....I can see myself coming back!

I've been going to the Tong D since they opened. I have mixed feelings about the place. I want to like the place. Nice people working hard. You can get lunch with a cup of soup and a salad for $10. I like the "dairyless" chicken coconut soup that most Thai places call tom kah. At dinner time, I get crispy pad thai, a dish I've never seen anywhere else. I like their coconut rice as a side. I think the curries are watery and portions are small. I've had the yellow and green curries with chicken. I added red pepper flakes just to give them some taste. Some one sent me a negative comment once that I was way off calling the portions small. Look at the pics! I tried their chicken soup with dumplings a couple times. It's not like Chinese wonton soup at all. The dumplings or little wontons in their chicken soup with bean sprouts are mushy. The bean sprouts don't help flavor the broth much either. I thought their crispy shrimp special in home made peanut sauce was awful. The peanut sauce tasted like peanut butter and those red hot cinnamon candies we all had as kids. I scraped it off the shrimp, and left the rest. I thought the wild boar basil, which is about as wild as a Perdue chicken wasn't much better. The eggplant was soaked in oil... Dripping. It's spicy and there's a strong ginger taste. I found it very hard to eat. Ginger and Basil don't go together in my book. Lastly, a green bean appetizer that was six or seven dollars was about a dozen small beans. I was disappointed. The place is expensive for what you get. You can spend $40 on take outs, and get a surprisingly light bag to take home. I don't agree with all the rave reviews of the place, but then again, I've sat there and listened to people debate over which wine to have with their tofu! I think they need to get a little more main stream with their food and quit trying to be so fancy. I don't think Thai food is gourmet. I don't like gourmet food in its little elf portions anyway. It's definitely a world cuisine, but the ingredients aren't expensive and the cooking process isn't a whole lot different than say, Chinese food, yet the portions are half the size and it's more expensive. Think about it. I can eat Cambodian and Vietnamese too, and most of the time, the places are cheaper and with better food. There's competition out there. I'm just saying...

Relative to Barrington, RI this is a 4 star restaurant based solely on the quality and flavor of the food. We have done take out for years from here and always remarked at home on how good the food is. We ate there last night and decided to eat at the restarant, looking back on the experience I can't help but giggle. It's an odd layout, very bright lights, tables are closely situated to one another and the help just stands there and stares at you from like 5 feet away, it is a very odd set up and results in a hurried sense without much privacy of conversation or relaxation. Again the food is rock solid, the exotic salads are woderful, as are the wok dishes to name a few.

  • Jaclyn P.

I'm really happy to have a Thai restaurant so close to home. The servers are very friendly and service itself is perfectly good. The menu is definitely "Barrington friendly" and lacks some of the more exotic offerings that I like to indulge in when dining out for Thai. The Pad Thai is a good portion for the price and my husband said the Tom Yum soup was really good. Some of the other entrees seemed a bit pricey but there are affordable options, for sure. Overall, I think Tong-D is a great option for dinner when you don't feel like cooking but still want a tasty, satisfying meal.

I LOVE this place! It's tucked away in a secret little corner in Barrington, but their food is always consistently fresh and their servers always friendly. Any of the starters are fantastic - the pork dumplings, scallion pancakes, or philly cheese wrapped are my personal faves. For a meal I usually get the spicy basil leaf with beef or peanut massaman curry with chicken...mmm... It is a tiny little place though, so be forewarned you won't walk into a huge swanky super busy chinese place. This is a simple small cozy thai place with delicious food. Nice ambiance, very clean, but don't be surprised if you show up at 9pm and are the only people in the place. If you like Thai food - definitely give it a try!!

I would give Tong-D a 4.5 if I could. It is an amazing place, if not a little badly positioned. I have been going to the place for 4 years now. The people are nice ( and don't correct you if you pronounce the names of the food wrong) they have great food, and the portions aren't the size that you would give a football player. I always leave here happy (and stuffed). So, what I have to complain about is that the location is bad, although close to everything and that the outside could be landscaped, but other than that, this is a great, low-priced place, and other reviews that say it is too expensive or like that are inaccurate

  • Doug W.

We had lunch here. The food was reasonable in price and quantity. Had the spicy basil and spring rolls. Both were good. I liked the restaurant and will come back again. The lunch menu was 9 or 10 for an appetizer and entre. There is parking and they have a takeaway menu. Service was very good but it was not very busy.

Don't order take out....we ordered food and they gave us a 15 min expected time. We show up in exactly that time and they accidentally gave our food away to other people..... Their solution was that they offered to call the people who picked it up and ask them to return it.....are you kidding?! Cold and already opened food that someone else already took home? Horrifying.

4 stars just for the spicy green curry. That stuff is delicious. I want to lick my plate! I did try something else once and I agree it was a bit bland. I stick to the green curry now. My husband likes the salmon teriyaki. The lunch specials are reasonable and you get appetizer, salad and entree. Service is always very good.
