Visiting the Yorktowne hotel is like gong back in time. The wallpaper, curtains, furniture and bath are a bit dated but in a good, kitschy way. The lobby, ballroom, and exterior of the building are strikingly grand. It's unsurprising that this hotel once hosted the likes of Hank Aaron and Lucile Ball. The staff is super friendly, the room is spacious, and I would highly recommend to anyone looking to be whisked away to a simpler time. The town of York also appears to be experiencing a bit of a renaissance which should stand as a bit of encouragement for post-industrial mid-size cities across America. I hope to return in the future and I wish this place the very best. Dave

My husband and I needed a place to crash while passing through York, PA late on a Saturday night and I was able to book a room through Priceline Express Deals. I read a few reviews and I feel like people are being a bit too hard on this little piece of history. Yes, the rooms are dated but they are clean, the bed and pillows are super comfortable, room temperature was perfect and the toiletries provided were fabulous. The lobby is absolutely beautiful and makes you feel like you've just stepped into the 1920s. The front desk offers books for your stay, kind of like a library, which I thought was neat. A tip for those needing to park their car. The hotel charges your credit card 10/night to park in the garage across the street BUT the garage is FREE Saturday & Sunday. I highly recommend staying here and experiencing going back in time for a night. :)

Wow. I book this 3 star hotel through a Priceline deal and man, I wish I hadn't. There was nothing right about it. 1. The parking deck is closed so you have to drive the wrong way across a one way to get to the municipal parking deck across the street 2. Big set of stairs when you first walk in. It is dark in the lobby, looks to have been updated in the early 80's. If you are handicapped, good luck with that. 3. THE ELEVATOR FEELS LIKE A HAND CRANKED ELEVATOR. 4. The rooms have ACTUAL KEYS. I'm not kidding. Keys. It isn't quaint, it is panic enducing. 5. The rooms smell damp. There is no pool. Just YEARS of spilled water/drinks on the carpet. The carpet is hard like the airport carpet when you take your shoes off. And stained. And from the 1980's. 6. The bed is RIDICULOUS. MATTRESS IS WOBBLY, hard and soft at the same time. I can't explain it. Bad. I think it goes back to the 1980s also. The bed spread? Gross. The never wash those. In this case, I didn't even want to put my purse down. We have one more night. If I could check out and get my money back I would. Wasn't worth the low low price I paid. Lastly tub is dirty. With hair in it. Not our hair. Bring shower shoes.

Not sure why it is listed as a 3 star hotel on Priceline. This is a very old building and needs lots of renovation. Especially they need to change the carpet in the lobby as well as in the rooms. Also the furniture needs to be changed as well, the sofa is our room was very dirty. The room itself needed much cleaning. The only good thing was the king size bed. The Sheets were clean but the quilt itself needs to be changed. I guess they have maintained everything from the time they opened this hotel. The staff is not that great, the are not friendly. Plus they charge 10 dollars extra for parking in their garage. We got a street parking in 4 spots available few steps away from the hotel. They dont serve breakfast!

I love!!!! This hotel. I could just sit in the lobby all day....the hotel is just beautiful. I felt like I was on the titanic. The staff were great! The night life was pretty shockingly fun ! Who knew? didn't know about the beautiful courtyards and restaurants, bands. We went for the hot rod car show, all the streets were filled with all these beautiful cars. This is a must. Oh and for you people who hate to walk the parking garage is right across the street give me a break! Your probably lazy and fat..

This historic hotel is rated 3 stars on Priceline and we got a room for about $60. Quite cheap. It was a very good value but there are pros and cons. PROS: This historic hotel is a unique experience. You can tell that decades ago it was a high end hotel that was probably the nicest place to stay in York. There are signs around the hotel listing many famous actors, actresses, Presidents, etc who've stayed here in the past. That was pretty cool. Another benefit was that parking was free in the garage across the street. They said that usually the charge was an extra $10 (which is also very cheap for city parking) but the city was currently making it free for a while. Another good thing about his place is that it is walking distance to the Central Market which is an awesome place that houses lots of mom and pop restaurants and gourmet food vendors under one roof. Very cool place. I reviewed 2 of those places. CONS: Because this is such an old hotel that has declined from its glory days, the internal garage under the hotel is permanently closed. This make things less convenient. There is no valet parking meaning you have to park across the street and bring your bags in up a flight of stairs since there is no elevator to get up that initial flight of stairs, this seems crazy but it's because the original garage isn't operational anymore! Another downside is that the downtown area feels like a ghost town. We arrived on a Saturday night around 9:30 PM and there was no one around the city, definitely didn't feel like the safest place to walk around at night.

Mistakes were made for last nights hotel room. This is not a three star hotel. It is as bad as motel 6. Possibly worse? The bed dips in the middle, the couch has funky on it and 3 times in my shower the water got cold, like someone in the building flushed or something. Ugh. The wifi was pretty good

This is a cute hotel full of old character. Apparently it is also pretty expensive but we got a big discount by booking through some website. The front desk was very friendly, and they actually give you metal keys like in the old days. The room itsself was on the 5th floor at the end of the hall. It contained a living room and a king sized bed room, very decent size, and a bathroom which had decent water pressure. The only thing the room was lacking is a refrigerator in case you have leftovers, or since everything closes on Sundays, you might need to find a grocery store and store your snacks over night. Our first night there was a fire alarm which was literally the loudest thing I have ever heard in my life. We exited our room and located the nearest emergency exit. Unfortunately the exit brought us to nowhere and it was very confusing, plus there were extremely elderly people holding up traffic because they couldn't use the stairs. While its not their fault, we probably would have died if there were a serious fire. The location of the hotel was pretty decent, but also kind of shady. I was able to find parking infront of the hotel for free overnight and my car was left untouched. A block in every direction from the hotel leads you into where you don't want to be, which was a turn off, but it was indeed a very interesting time in York. Very close to Amish country and Hershey.

Stayed at the Yorktowne Hotel with great expectations. We will not be back! Upon arrival there is no valet parking, no easy directions of even how to get into the hotel. Went inside, there was no one there, only one staff member at front desk. The hotel was like a tomb, there was no one else there! Checked in no problems, waited forever on elevator while my husband had to drive across the one way street to the parking garage. Arrived to our Jr Suite and almost turned around and walked out. The carpet, doors, furniture were filthy and beyond dated. I actually used a towel to just sit on the sofa. Bathroom was beyond belief, bathtub was filthy. Picture this, pale 1950's style yellow tile around the tub, a set of old plumbing fixture that no longer worked, ones added later worked but were ill fitting and the tub ran all night despite my attempts to turn it off. To go with the old tile was a grey/blue toilet with a white seat and lid. My husband did not tell me until after we left, but when he got up during the night and went into the bathroom there was a cockroach in the bathtub. The bed was very old and uncomfortable, drapes and bedding looked like it had not been replaced in years. My husband actually stated he would not hang those in his garage. There were two TV's in our suite, both were those huge old tube type TV's that I have not seen in over ten or more years. There is no room service, coffee service. Nothing. The fine dining restaurant closed a couple of years ago. There is a diner type restaurant in the front, but really does not have much to offer. I was really excited about staying there as I love historic old hotels with great history, but we will never return.

What a cool place. Lots of character. I booked this hotel on Priceline. I'm always a little nervous when i get an Express Deal and its not a chain. This place was funky(good funky)It looked pretty original like it hadnt been renovated but this is part of what gave it charm and lots of character. I could imagine being there in its heyday. spent 3 nights. Very quiet. really friendly staff. Slightly odd that the sink was in a separate room from shower..but thats ok the price was right....hmm that billy goat in the glass case in lobby kind of freaked me out slightly...man i bet he has some stories to tell

We took a suite on the 7th floor; the hotel itself is fancy with modern amenities. Appliances and furniture are a tad dated but it gives the place charm. Very Stephen King, haha.

I'm sorry to say, but this place is a dump. The rooms are old and smelly. I hear this use to be "the hotel" but they have really let her go. The rooms do not match the warmth and style of the lobby. When I checked in, they actually gave me a dirty used room.

After enough Westins and Hyatts, you start to forget that hotels can feel like homes, that they can have cool furniture that isn't cool just cuz it's new, but rather precisely because its old and storied The Yorktowne is a good reminder. It's also a good reminder of all those people in the world who live in places like York I don't think they read yelp very much

On a recent trip to Lancaster County, Pa we wound up finding this historical gem in a city that is no stranger to history. The Yorketowne Hotel was built in the mid 1920's and has been host to so many famous people over the years it's a veritable who's who in influential people- Margaret Thatcher, Hank AAron, Micky Mantle- the list goes on and on. Rather than gut the building like other hotels have done, the Yorktowne has maintained much the same look as it had in its heyday. Twenty foot ceilings in the lobby complete with wood panelling, the original elevators and even the original brass mail system chute for dropping correspondence from any floor to the lobby was maintained. The downtown location is perfect- in a safer area of York, you can walk to many nearby restaurants and read the many historical signs as you stroll the streets. The rooms very clean and although not modern with the flat screen televisions we have gotten accustomed to, they did have smaller tvs and offered free wifi. The staff was very friendly and recommended a restaurant which we thoroughly enjoyed. Valet parking is available in their garage at eight dollars per night. Overall, you can't go wrong here for a nice stay and relaxing sleep.

Stayed here recently while in town on business. Lots of history here for sure. The elegance of yesteryear abounds. Our room was clean, reasonably up to date, and quite comfortable. As noted in another review, you might say the Yorktowne is not exactly crawling with concierges. If you expect that level of service, you'll be happier paying 3 times as much at the Ritz-Carlton. Our interactions with staff, though few, were quite pleasant. Nestled in the heart of old York, parking is right across the street, though a bit tricky to get into and not free. If you have cause to be in York, and can appreciate the grandeur of Roaring 20s style architecture, inside and out, give the Yorktowne a shot. You may be pleasantly surprised.

Update: interactions with staff were pleasant. Free wifi in lobby. Breakfast in attached restaurant was okay, although it was also shabby and looked somewhat unclean.

I wasn't impressed. "Historic" is just another way to say "really old." The room was a little stuffy, and even the furniture in the room was "historic" and worm. There is a parking garage, but you have to have an attendant park your vehicle for you. If the attendant isn't right there you have to go find him/her and that makes parking a real pain. Street parking is a little shaky partly because of the area and partly because it's metered so you need to pay attention to the hours in order to not get a ticket. The woman working the desk was very nice and helpful, and the restaurant there is pretty good, but I'd still rather stay at one of the chain hotels on 30.

My husband and I were married here in November 2011. We absolutely loved it. The hotel is classically beautiful. If you're looking for something modern, look elsewhere. The rooms and decor match the classic feel of the building. Not only was our wedding planner, Layla, an absolute joy to work with, but everyone at the hotel was very pleasant and made our wedding day (and night) unforgettable.

This hotel is full of so much character and old world charm that I desperately wanted to be able to give it a good review...but that won't be the case. In my opinion, there are only 4 things a hotel should do well: - be clean - be safe - provide means for a comfortable night's rest - provide acceptable basic amenities While we found the hotel to be perfectly clean and safe, the latter two were seriously lacking. The bed was incredibly firm (although, for some, that might be perfect) and the pillows were incredibly lumpy and hard. Both my husband and I woke up with various pains in our necks, shoulders and back from a very uncomfortable night's sleep. As for the 'basic amenities,' I'm not referring to a pool (although there was none) or a fitness center (although I hear that is incredibly lacking), we're referring to the very basic here: the bathroom. The toilet ran all night...but, even worse, there was practically no water pressure in the shower. It took us FOREVER to get ready in the morning. My husband normally tops out at 15 minutes in the bathroom to get ready. Due to the water essentially dripping from the shower head, he took 45 minutes. Other callouts: Breakfast is not included Parking is not included, although is available at a garage across the street (and will cost $10/night, charged to your room) On the flip side, a few pluses for this property: The hotel staff was very polished, professional and friendly Wifi was not only free but of good quality for a hotel - I've stayed in many a hotel chain offering free wifi only to find pages not loading and signal strength not being strong enough to stream a movie. Neither was the case here. It's a little hard to complain since we got our room for a steal from Priceline, but we won't be making an effort to stay at this property again.

My father lives in York, so I never expected to stay here. I just stay on his couch when I visit him. However, he had a serious heart attack at the end of January ( ydr.com/mike/ci_25539009… ) and I stayed in York for the two weeks he was in the ICU. Dad's wife and I alternated staying in the room and staying at the house, but then there was an ice storm that made it impossible to go back to the house for a couple of days. We found ourselves at the Yorktowne. I have to say that after spending 48 hours in the ICU, wearing the same clothes you've been wearing, and eating only what you can get in the hospital cafeteria (which wasn't bad, actually... great salad bar), any hotel would have been a welcome change. However, this place was fantastic. The beds were comfortable, our bathroom was spacious, there was wifi. It was elegant and old-fashioned. The nachos at the bar downstairs were delicious! And this place is full of history, which they've proven with the little signs in the elevators that list the famous people who have stayed there. The only ones that come to mind right now are the New Kids on the Block. ;) But trust me on this, stay here. The only con is the way the parking is set up... valet only, so sometimes you have to wait a few minutes for your car, but this was not a problem.

Stopped in yesterday to look around the place as a possible wedding venue. First impressions mean a lot and the first thing I noticed was an old, musty smell. This in itself was very off-putting to me. Next, I walked around and looked at several of the ballrooms and they look very old and dated; however, maybe they would look nice when all dressed up, but things were just laying around on all the floors. Then, I walked over to the front desk to get information and let me tell you I was not impressed. The guy at the desk seemed like he just rolled out of bed; his shirt was all wrinkled and his name tag was not on straight. Also, there was a maintenance guy sitting in the room to the right of the desk with his feet all propped up on the desk chewing away at his gum. We asked for information about having a weeding and the desk guy advised that they do not have any information at the front desk and that he might have a business card for the Banquet Director, but was unable to produce it and provided us with another business card and wrote the information on the back. Honestly, after this visit I would not consider this place. If the people do not take pride in how they look (clean up and iron your clothes) or care that a potential customer is standing in front of them (toward maintenance guy who shouldn't be lounging around in plain sight) then why should I bother using them.

I have a room here which when I reserved, was told they would bring us a roll out bed to sleep an extra person. This is not a roll out. It is a sleep sofa that is itchy, smelly and a flimsy mattress with metal poking me through shifting sheets that appear to have crumbs in it. It's 12:45 am and I am dreading the remaining time until I can leave. Very concerned whether these are bed bugs that I might take home in my clothes. But we stayed 2 nights. Last night I slept on a bed giving my relative this sleep sofa. Poor guy, so sorry to have him slept on this last night. Another awful thing is the bathroom had 4 small towels. We have 5 people in our stay. Not enough towels for us. And they only offer 1 small bottle of shampoo & 1 conditioner. And today when they cleaned our room, they did not provide us new shampoo bottles so we had no shampoo for tonights shower. This morning we really needed coffee. They had a small pot with supplies to make 2 cups of coffee. But there was not enough instant creamer for 1 cup of coffee so only 1 cup was made. They need to offer more creamer & sugar packets in the room. And we went out to dinner with a box of food but there is no refridgerstor to put this food in. And the cleaning staff threw out my water from last night and they do not have any bottled water in the room so that if I wanted some, had any. Don't most hotels offer a water bottle at the very least? Wow, this is really bad here. I can't believe how low the standards are. The wall paper is peeling off in the bathroom. The ceiling appears to have water damage in a corner next to a window. The toilet handle must be held down the entire flush to flush. This hotel dearly needs major renovation. I do not think they get much business, I have not seen any other guests while here. But I can't believe that in such a slow time, they gave us such poor accommodations. I am so itchy and this sleep sofa smells so bad. But I do not want to disturb my sleeping family to pack up and move to a new room at this hour or ask them to bring up the roll out bed I was quoted to be sleeping on. We have 2 adults, 1 teenager and 2 children. So we need 2 1/2 beds. This is not what I was quoted or expected.

My wife and I are in town for a christening, and pricelined for a decent hotel deal. When we got the Yorktowne (stole is probably a better term), I got a little nervous because it wasn't a chain and they have some suspect reviews on other sites. As I drove into the valet, I quietly prayed "please don't let this place be a dump." My prayer worked! Before I tell you why I love this place, you need to understand some things: I REALLY appreciate older architecture and design. I believe that it is a true shame how we have lost sight of some of the unique features that used to exist in our older cities and instead opt for the big-box, lowest-bid design aesthetic of suburbia. Now that I have offended anyone who lives in suburbia, let me continue. The Yorktowne is NOT a Marriott, a Hilton, or any other chain hotel that is engineered to create a repeatable experience. The Yorktowne IS something from the past. A big, beautiful, grand hotel from a hundred years ago. The lobby is beautiful, done in wood paneling (the tasteful kind, not the cheesy 70's version). The mail chute still works, which is cool, and the elevators are old... but I like them that way. We stayed on the eighth floor which gave us a wonderful view of the city, in a room that was spacious, well appointed, and comfortable. The ceilings were high, in both our room and the wide hallways. The entire hotel gives a sense of space, and is quite nice. My only issue with the Yorktowne is the desk chair in my room is a little less than comfortable... but that is ok because I can move to the love seat that is pretty nice. The staff has been great (so far), quite attentive, personable, and helpful. From the valet, to the bellhop, to the front desk... I need to stop gushing. Bottom Line: No, this isn't the chain that you are used to... it is so much nicer, enjoy the beauty of the place, and allow yourself to imagine what hotels could be again.

I found myself in York for a show at the Strand theater. The Yorktowne Hotel is a convenient block from the theater. I originally booked online and upon check in, I asked the person at the desk to apply my AAA discount. This miffed the front desk person and was greeted with exasperation since they had to redo my check in process. Mind you, it was Tuesday and the place was empty. Not a good start. The hotel prides itself on a list of famous people that have stayed there. The list is in the elevator. These people are mostly from 30-40 years ago. This is also probably the last time they renovated the rooms. Drab is the best way to describe the rooms, hallways and hotel in general. I'm realistic in the quality of a hotel bed but the bed was probably one of the most uncomfortable I've ever TRIED to sleep in. The best thing I can say about the Yorktowne Hotel was that it was walking distance to the theater, so if that's your reason for going to York, this is your best bet and unfortunately ONLY bet. The Valet Parking was reasonable at $8 a night and despite the mostly negative review, the room was only $108 minus taxes and such. So I don't feel to put off by the so so accomodations. The show was good and I had a good dinner in town all within walking distance.

My brother had his wedding here in June 2010. It was Yorktowne's first same-sex wedding. The staff - right down to the Parking Attendents - didn't give one noticeable inkling of concern beyond making sure that our family and guests were treated with the same respect and dignity that any other guest would receive. The lobby was stunning, embodying a perfect old school charm with a beautiful piano as the central piece. The bedrooms were also very nice. I liked the wall paper, the bathrooms, the high-quality sheets, et al. I was most pleased when I saw that the handi-capable room was more than adequate to meet the needs of our mother. All public spaces we used were impeccably clean. The bartenders were heavy-handed when pouring mixed drinks. And the food at the reception was mostly good, with a few exceptions that were more due to my taste likings than actual food quality. The only thing I didn't like were the hallways in the residential areas. They were old school in a non-desireable, horribly drab way. They were just downright boring. And I was not the only person in our party to voice that same opinion. We all felt that, with as much money as they charge, they'd work to make sure every element of the facility matches exquisitely. But the hallways just seemed better fit for the set of an old western film. But, overall, I was thoroughly impressed and pleased with my experience at and treatment by the staff of Yorktowne. I don't think I'd want to stay here if I were visiting York. But I'd hold a large event here any time.

Shot a movie in York this past fall - stayed at the Yorktowne Hotel for 4 weeks - really enjoyed the place :) its an historic hotel so yes - its old and outdated and...old. But my room was awesome and i called it home for a month. Very quiet (which was what i needed since we shot all hours of the day/night never having a set sleeping pattern on set) - i was never bothered by anyone - staff was super great - valet was awesome. they got to know me so i parked my jeep right up front the entire time i was there. housekeeping loved me - because i never really asked them to clean my room - just hit me w towels every friday. Both restaurants were nice - the old restaurant reminded me of the dance hall in the Shining. Bad ass!!! the elevators were the turn of the century old - max capacity 7 per elevator - pure awesomeness. Not much to do in York - really nothing to do unless youre shooting a movie. So if youre looking for the best hotel in York - stay at the Yorktowne.

If you have already booked a room here, don't let my review convince you NOT to go, but I have experienced better. The place is unique, and the lobby is nicely decorated as previous reviewers have mentioned. You also need to understand that "historic" really just means "old", as the rooms are definitely old and haven't been redone in a while. The shower was interesting. We couldn't get consistent water pressure or temperature. Also, it was impossible to shower without soaking (and I do mean flooding) the entire bathroom floor, and I'm not really sure why. The toilet was also oddly low to the floor. The front desk staff was very nice, and they even had safety pins when I asked as a last resort when I needed one. Also, the hotel is valet parking only, so just be mindful of that. It's also right on the edge of some not so great neighborhoods. We didn't have anything horrible happen, just be aware of your surroundings. We stopped by their restaurant (the one on the first floor, I think there is another one, too) for breakfast in the morning, and the price was nice, and the food was good, but service was slow, and we were supposed to get complimentary mimosas and pastries, which never showed or were mentioned (and as I said, service was slow, so by the time we realized that wasn't happening, it was kind of pointless to even ask for it and wait even longer).

Went to Yorktowne Hotel Commonwealth Room during restaurant week in York, PA. --Slow service 1) Ordered a glass of wine. It was brought out and placed on a side board. 5 minutes later it was presented to me although the wait staff were just standing around. This happened many times throughout our visit. 2) Got there at 6:45 didn't leave until 8:45 and we had to tell them to speed up because we needed to leave. There were hardly any people there so I have no idea what took so long. 3) Ordered the snapper soup. It had an over powering taste of cloves. 4) VERY small portions. Hubby ordered some lamb and received 4 small medalions for $38. --Dead & no atmosphere: Very few diners and the folks who were there were elderly. --Dinner for 2 couples was $194 without tip. WASN'T WORTH IT! Read this and then get a table at the Left Bank or Blue Moon IF you have to stay in York. --Terrible waitstaff: Not knowledgeable about the menu. Ordered a martini and I was told, "I'm not sure we have that. Are you sure? I could check." I told her to forget it. I didn't feel ignored I just felt that they had no idea how to handle a room.

We have purchased numerous gift cerfiticates online, "Buy a $50 gift cert. for $25". (Advertised on the radio) The meals are nicely prepared, but certainly overpriced for the area. Our first time here, we had an extremely devoted waiter who waited on us like we were the Rockafellers. The 2nd time we ate here, we had a young waitress who did not notice when drinks were low or when we were ready to head out - and there were not many patrons, so we felt a little ignored. Will we go back? Definetely. With these $25 for the price of a $50 gift certs, it makes it worth while.

Pleasantly surprised... My wife and I went, it was a place she wanted to try and had a gift card. The menu, while not large, did allow for several options. I went in not expecting much and was quite surprised by the elements. While my meal included a vegetable medly, it was very gourmet. Broccoli and carrots can be pretty eh. But what I received was not mere fake rounded baby carrots and broccoli. But of a very garden style nature, unusual variants. (Including purple brussel sprouts.) Service was excellent, and they allowed for some personalized customization of the menu. Ordering a few sides and sauces off the other menu items. My wife was also introduced to the "chocolate martini" - it was love at first sip. Haven't been again. It is a bit pricey, and that might be a detractor. Intend to go again.

If you are looking for a nice place to stay and don't care about getting your Hilton points, stay at the Yorktowne, It is one of the last grand hotels left, and their prices are reasonable. I have stayed there and have had guests stay there and they have had nothing but great things to say about it. It was sold from local ownership recently so has undergone some changes but it has much innate beauty just look around the lobby at the detailed woodwork you don't find today. Lobby Bar is the best bet. The downstairs bar doesn't have much of a scene, but they have great food. Make sure you don't miss the tomato bisque!

I think they still have the original beds from the day they opened. Same with the linens. The coffee maker is from Kennedy Administration. The surrounding neighborhood is a crack den. Smells like a retirement home. Nice staff though!
