We made reservations at this restaurant for my mother's 70th birthday. At the outset, we were told that they couldn't accommodate us at one table, which we understood. The problem came when we arrived at the restaurant and were immediately greeted by less than courteous service. When we asked if we could set one more place at our table so that all the adults could sit together, the waitress was very rude and said she couldn't have that many people at a table, it would be too tight. We said we didn't mind, we'd rather sit together, and were told that there were going to be several large parties so it wasn't possible. It was true - they seated 4 large parties in one room and it was tight. BUT an adjacent room sat COMPLETELY EMPTY for the entire evening. The food was just OK - lobster was overcooked, escargots had a soggy, greasy puff pastry laid on top of it, and the prime rib wasn't seasoned properly. The shrimp and scallop linguine was good, and so was the sea bass. The crab succotash on the seared scallops was too sweet. One of our servers was pleasant, but all in all, it was a tense, unpleasant experience. We made the best of it but it was disappointing that what should have been a celebration was clouded by poor service, and bad attitudes from the hostess and one of our servers. I think that a review of a restaurant should reflect how likely it is that you would return given your experience. We will not be back and wouldn't recommend it.

This little gem has been around for years, and should not be overlooked when one is considering a night on the town. I have always had the most pleasant service each time I dine at The Loft. The menu is not edgy, but is consistent and delicious. The salads are always super fresh, and they accommodate any special food requirements. Love that it has that old Lancaster city feel.

At one time The Loft was one of my favorite restaurants in Lancaster Pa.My wife and I stopped by two to three times a month. This was in the late 80's to 2000. Lancaster has grown since then and has lots of choices for fine dinning now. So after 6 or 7 years we went back to our old stand by. Service was good. Food was to say at best average no fine dinning at all. I had the scallops, small, under seasoned, served with mashed potatoes???? Wife had filet Mignon she said not much taste she did not think it was a good cut of meat. Son Had the veal he said it was under seasoned, poor cut very poor.. sons girl friend chicken said it was ok. As you can see by my post not happy at all. Its a shame for a fine place like the Loft to go down hill, will not return. By the way at one time the loft was the place that set the standard for fine dinning in Lancaster Pa. Now I think they set the standard for what not to do. My son told me they turned the heat down and it was cold one the girls. I had a jacket on so I did not notice If I did I would reduced my tip by %.

My husband and I went to The Loft last night after catching a movie. We wanted something a little fancier than normal, as we were celebrating our 6 month wedding anniversary. I was in the mood for seafood and he had no preference, so we searched for seafood restaurants in Lancaster and results showed The Loft Restaurant. Upon entering the building, we were met with a very steep staircase that led to the restaurant. Inside, there were bathrooms immediately to the left, followed by a walk-in closet area where one could hang their coat. We were seated immediately, and noticed that there were only two other tables that were occupied. It was about 7:45 pm on a Monday evening, so we weren't expecting a full house. Within about a minute of being seated, our waiter came over, introduced himself and offered us a beer and wine list. After his recommendation, we ended up ordering the Sweet Riesling, which was very good. He also let us know about the meal specials and gave us about 5 minutes to peruse the menu. He came back then and took our orders, coming back out within about 5 minutes to give us our side salads, served with either vinaigrette, bleu cheese or ranch dressing. I chose ranch and my husband chose vinaigrette. The ranch was very creamy and I am almost certain that it was homemade. My husband's dressing was also very good! The salads were not just iceberg topped with some veggies. I had a good mix of field greens, topped with grape tomatoes, red onion, green pepper and cucumber. Everything tasted fresh. About 10 minutes after completing our salads, our food arrived. The total ticket time was about 25 minutes, but the presentation was superb and the quality was even better! I had the scallops with crab succotash and mashed potatoes. My husband had the dinner special, which was pork loin with an garlic and herb gravy and duck with a raspberry glaze, with a mashed potato puree. Both meals were served on narrow rectangular plates. The servings were certainly not huge, but I had no room for anything else after I finished. The scallops were perfectly cooked and had a balsamic glaze over the top, which complimented the fresh seafood nicely. The mashed potato puree' unlike a review by another diner, was amazing! It was most definitely not made with instant mashed potatoes. These potatoes were fresh, buttery and topped with fresh parsley. Our waiter checked in with us one time while we were eating to see if we needed anything and the bartender/hostess, who was behind the bar for the duration of our stay, made polite conversation as she asked us how our meals were. At the end of the meal, our waiter brought us two dark chocolate-dipped strawberries, which I assume was because we were celebrating our 6 "monthiversary" and had no room for dessert. Even the strawberries and chocolate were delicious and fresh! My husband and I will definitely be back. The service was wonderful and attentive, the atmosphere was quiet (I'm sure this is unsettling to some people, but I spent my adolescence in Germany, where restaurant eating is quiet, intimate and about the food rather than the loud screaming that tends to make up the American dining experience), and the food was SO delicious! The price was also extremely reasonable. For 2 glasses of sweet Riesling, a scallop entree, duck/pork entree, and a wonderful experience, we paid $66.50. Now, I normally wouldn't spend this on dinner out, but even an Applebees dinner would run about $50, so I can't complain a single bit :) Eat here. You won't be sorry.

Second floor access is via chairlift. Staff is very kind and has a good sense of humor. Food is quite good, especially the oysters. A bit high in price of entrees. Would definitely recommend, though, if you're looking for a good German atmosphere..

Excellent, I've never had a bad experience here in 14 years. From lunch to elegant evenings you'll love it. My favorite are the fried oysters, but that filet with crab is awesome. Definitely a locals place.

"Craig M." appears to be a spam/fake review. Firstly, he says the only reason he gave 2 stars instead of 1 is because the server was great, but THEN goes on to say that he would expect better service! Secondly, the food at the Loft is and has always been FRESH/HOMEMADE, so the fact that this person claims they had INSTANT potatoes either makes him a liar or he has an incredibly super bad palate. I have dined there many times and never had any issues with food quality or the service. Third, you can see that out of 12 submitted reviews, he is the only person to leave anything less than 3 stars. This place does have some older (well paid- not your buffet/cafeteria/diner crowd seniors!) diners, but there is always a nice mixture of ages when we visit. I believe the lift chair is there due to LAWS stating that you must have handicap accessible entrances, and due to the smaller size of the restaurant they did not have room for a ramp or elevator- it is on the SECOND floor! Unfortunately SIX of these reviews got FILTERED out of the rating, for what reason I don't know, seeing as they are obviously ALL legitimate reviews by legitimate people! Something is VERY VERY wrong with these "filters". This person should be an obvious filtered review because it is Craig M's ONLY review, there is no profile photo or details, the person just recently created their account, etc. MEANWHILE, the reviews that got filtered were made by people WITH profile pictures AND completed profiles (obviously real and honest people) whom also have written various other reviews for different types of businesses of varying types and with various ratings over a number of years! Anyway, the best things about this place are the fresh bread and salads that come with the meal, the classic menu, the freshness of all the food, everything IMO is seasoned and cooked perfectly. There are some higher priced restaurants in Lancaster that I would never eat at again because of the experience I had with overpaying for less than quality food, and this is NOT one of them. You get everything you pay for and more here.

Best restaurant in Lancaster, Pa. Wonderful food, great service and excellent drinks. The specials; often fish are usually great. I love the prime rib, the filet served with a mushroom sauce. My wife loves the Sea Scallops served with crab succotash and mashed potatoes. In winter the chefs Macaroni and cheese is a special treat. We often get it instead of a desert. The service has always been attentive and friendly. We often ask for a piece of fried goat cheese on our salad or a side order of succotash and they are always happy to make our evening special. Drinks are generous and well mixed. I like to sit in a booth in the bar room. This is a quiet, intimate restaurant. I feel like I am coming home when we eat at the Loft.

We just returned from another excellent dinner. The service, the food and the ambiance is all perfect. Love the staff, friendly and attentive. The food is always great. And the atmosphere is a cozy loft with touches of European decor. Highly recommend!

OMG...dated place....dated menu....great waiter.....Saturday nite at 8PM the place was 20% full. There is a reason for that. Signature dish of filet mignon and crab imperial was mediocre at best. I doubt if it was filet mignon and it was unevenly cooked. The Crab Imperial was nothing more than mediocre crab cake. I had Schnitzel which I have eaten at least 200 times in my life and this was the worst I ever had. It was soggy with grease and oil and the egg was over cooked..Hello, this is a german restaurant...how could you screw up schnitzel. Salad and vegetables in the meal were not fresh. This restaurant reminds me of the other Lancaster mystery resturant like Lombardos and Stockyard...all 3 are staying in business because of the inexperienced pallets of the over 70 crowd. Don't drink too much as the flight of stairs is scary !

A first time here...Nice inside...not a place you would notice driving by.You have to know it's there and hunt it down!Once inside up a long flight of stairs it is nice inside. The bread and salad average. The food was good...I had the duck...I have had better but it was still good.Husband had the Sea Bass special he enjoyed! I thought the presentation could have been a little better.Drinks were nice and strong!Be careful with that flight of stairs!!!

The Loft is receiving two stars for one reason, our waiter. He was great in a poorly run place. For the small place that The Loft is, I would expect better service. It should not take 1.5-2 hours for appetizers and a entrees. The food was poorly seasoned (if seasoned at all), the service was slow, and the menu was dated. The "special" Mahi wasn't seasoned at all, and relied completely on the stuffing for any type of seasoning. The scallops were decent, but the "whipped " potatoes were definitely instant and not homemade. This place is definitely for the older crowd (60+) as the lift chair on the entrance steps would indicate. If you're looking for a quality location for your dollar, this is not the place. I have no qualms with paying the price for the food we ordered, but I was none too happy with paying the price for the food we received. I will not be coming back to the Loft nor will I recommend it to anyone.

My girlfriend and I visited the restaurant Valentine's night. I wasn't sure if the menu was going to be a pre fixed menu or not, and it was. They pretty much covered the usual suspects on the menu, filet, prime rib, crab imperial, lobster tail, scallops you get the point. The mushroom goat cheese with phylo was a great concept however it was just that, I felt like it needed something to bring it all together. I had the raw oysters, they were fresh plump and salty from the James River. We each had filet prepared medium and it tasted delicious and came out perfectly cooked. I paired mine with a lobster tail, which was a small chick tail, however the meat was tender. My girlfriend paired her filet with crab imperial and was delicious as well. We had a peanut butter mousse pie which tasted great but had a hotel presentation. There were a few things that irritated me about the night however didn't ruin the night. First of all the table we were sat at was completely in an obtuse area of the restaurant. We had a spot light shining directly down on us, wedged in between the wall and a larger group. We were positioned to where sitting there we were left staring at a booth with another couple sitting 4 ' in front of us on a very busy walk way separating the 2 areas. I felt like we were kinda stuffed in the middle of traffic. What I didn't understand is the restaurant wasn't at full capacity and there were these beautiful , very large booths that looked romantic and cozy and out of the way that sat empty for some time. At one point the waitress even walked past the table and bumped into the wine list and the corner became wedged between my chest, her and the guy sitting to my left lol. We also sat down at the same time time another couple sat down and they had their bread 20 minutes before I had to flag the hostess down for ours. Her reply was " aww have you not talked to your server yet?" lol. We looked around and both agreed where we sat made us feel very out of place. I didn't want to slam the food though because of it like many people on yelp would. In fact we would give the place another try, just would request a corner table or a booth. The atmosphere is really nice and the prices are reasonable. I am sure I would have given another star if the table and position we were in didn't blow.

Such a nice surprise!!!!! We really really enjoyed our meal here. The decor is very cozy, although the room we were seated in could have been a bit warmer in temperature. I ordered the French onion soup- it was a different take on it- the broth was lighter but overall very tasty. My husband got the mushroom soup and neither of us liked it at all. It was tangier than expected- maybe a little too much lemon? Our salad greens were cold and fresh. I ordered the Australian Sea bass special. It was FABULOUS. Barramundi is one of my favorite fish! they prepared it with scallops and shrimp in a butter sauce. The scallops and shrimp were small, but tasty. Served with a baked potato or veggie of the day, which was asparagus. I would have preferred both. :-) My husband ordered the prime rib. it came out on the bone, which was new to us. It was absolutely delicious!!! Seasoned perfectly. We both loved it. One of the best prime ribs we've ever had. I was not a fan of the bread served at dinner. The first basket had a white loaf. It was warm and soft, but very dry. The second loaf was a rye pumpernickel loaf which was better. I hate rye, but enjoyed the bread. Apparently the chef is also the owner, which is nice. They close when he takes vacation twice a year. Our dinner was the first night open after their winter break. So everything was fresh, which is something I always worry about at other restaurants. Dessert was good. I got the frozen peanut butter pie, which was more like peanut butter ice cream on a graham cracker crust. I enjoyed that. My husband got the Kahlua creme brûlée. I wasn't a fan, but I only like traditional vanilla creme brûlée. We will DEFINITELY return, and I hope everything will be just as fresh the next time we eat here.

My dining companion and I had New Year's Eve reservations and at 7:45 the place was packed but we were shown right to our table. The menu was limited but seemed to have something for everyone. I had the oysters on the half shell ($13). The half-dozen were large, fresh and delicious! My dining companion enjoyed his escargot en croute ($11). We both had the fillet with lobster tail ($39). The fillet was among the largest I've ever received for Surf and Turf. The tail was 5 oz. All was prepared as requested and sumptuous! A complimentary chocolate mouse in a chocolate cup with berries was included. The meal also came with a salad. Service was a bit slow but well-paced. There is no separate staff to bus tables so the wait staff and hostess must do that. The place is not large and tables are a bit close together so more staff would probably just add to the confusion. (Top shelf Martinis, BTW, are $10) The Loft has a long history and excellent reputation in Lancaster. The crowd, somewhat more "mature," are probably regulars and have been there many times. As for me...I'll be back to try more of their faire!

I just took my fiance to The Loft for her birthday. I am from Lancaster and realize that this restaurant has been there for years. The problem is, I haven't. I will tell you, the service was impeccable... our waitress and her assistant made us feel special. The meal was superb...she had the scallops, while I had the cobia. The dessert, too, was fantastic. If you're living in or visiting Lancaster, take advantage of this treasure in Lancaster city. You won't be sorry!
