Today (7/30) I dined with my wife at Sakana for the first time because we had a craving for some good sushi. We are pretty unfamiliar with sushi places in this area, so I reviewed Yelp and narrowed it down to three places, M, Miso, and Sakana. I ended-up choosing Sakana because they had an advertised lunch special where you order three (3) rolls, get a cup of soup, a side salad, and it costs $10.50-ish. My wife and I don't eat a ton for lunch, so I figured that this would do the trick for the two of us, and it did! Food: The three rolls we ordered were the Spicy Tuna Roll, Spicy Salmon Roll, and the Crab (Kami) Roll. The Kami roll had imitation crab in it, which I am not particularly fond of, but the flavor was still remarkably good for something I have a negative predisposition about (3/5). The Spicy Tuna Roll was the best. It had some nice, little 'crunchies' in there which really added to the texture, and the fish tasted fresh. our favorite by far (4/5). The Spicy Salmon Roll was also very good. Again, the fish tasted great, and the spicy sauce was really well balanced (4/5). I typically like to go to sushi places with several people, so we all can order a wide variety of specialty rolls and sample each of them. Usually though, i like to go to a place first and try their 'basic' rolls because if they can't even do that right, then I do not want to come back and waste my money. I will definitely be back to Sakana because their rolls were good. The Onion Soup was excellent. It was super-well seasoned, and the flavor was subtle enough where it didn't overwhelm my palette. I would order this soup again, even if it didn't come with my meal. The salad was also nice. It was a ginger dressing which had nice flavor. The texture was a little lumpy, but I don't think that is abnormal. Food: 4 / 5 (with the potential to be a 5 when I come back and try some specialty rolls) Service: The service was really sweet. I don't know if that is a qualifying rating for service, but I am using it. Our server was really polite, very efficient, and just very pleasant. She didn't necessarily do anything above-and-beyond that 'wowed me', but this was definitely above-average service just based on how nice, polite, and sweet she was. It goes to show you, that I am never looking for anything wildly over-the-top with my server. I just want to be served in a polite and respectful manner. Service: 4 / 5 Atmosphere: I really liked Sakana's atmosphere. It was a little bit intimate/romantic, and classy. This could easily be a great date for a nice night out with a significant other, or it could also be a place to go with a larger group of people and have some good times. The only thing that bothered me a bit, is there was a slight odor. I find this to be pretty consistent with places that decide to have carpeting instead of tile or laminate floors. I think carpeting in a restaurant is a little gross, and always smells. Spill something once on it, and you will never get the smell out. This was a bit of a bummer, but did not reflect the quality of the food in anyway -- which was a relief Atmosphere: 4 / 5 (5/5 - 1 for the smell) Price: For $14, my wife and I ate good quality sushi, soup, and a salad. Not only that, but both of us were satisfied at the end. We had originally considered getting a dessert (either the ice cream tempura or the banana tempura), but found that we were perfectly satisfied with what we had already consumed. This price is the essentail equivalent of going and getting a couple of meals at McDonalds, but it tasted waaaaaay, waaaaaay better. Because of that, I feel like I got a great value, and will definitely return to try some specialty rolls. Price: 4 / 5 Final Thoughts: After researching the three major sushi places near where I work, I settled on Sakana, and I am glad that I did. I will likely never drive out here from Camp Hill, but I will definitely bring friends and family here, or even co-workers if we want a special night out for some sushi because I know this place serves up quality. I would also like to note that the hibachi looked, and smelled AMAZING. I think that I will be stopping back for their 7.95-8.95 Hibachi Lunch special in the very near future.

Clean, good service, good rolls, byob! Wish they had hot and sour soup. But everything was tasty

Yum. I came here with my mom a week ago for sushi. Normally when I go out, I order three different rolls--and I'm usually pleasantly stuffed. I didn't get even close to finishing the three and I was so full! I made my mom eat a few pieces off my plate. The rolls were huge, and very delicious. The eel was perfect, and everything else was absolutely wonderful. The restaurant itself was very pretty...very open and simple and clean. I'll definitely be returning.

Food wise - the sushi is not as good as was when it first opened, but there is still potential. The bathroom is absolutely atrocious, which says a lot in itself...

As far as quick reviews go it did have quite a nice atmosphere for hibachi, the chef was very nice even if he did drop his cooking utensils a few times this is one of the top places for hibachi in the area. Sushi wise they do not have a huge selection, they really have nothing in the way of combos and dinner specials, although their chef rolls weren't too bad, generous portions of fish and a very fair price. Some of us had a mix and match sharing hibachi and a few rolls which made a good meal for two. Hibachi wise... better than say Tokyo diner but I wouldn't go there for sushi alone.

I decided try try Sakana last weekend after being told that there was a 45 min wait at another restaurant. I was with 4 adults and 2 infants. We were seated right away. We ordered apps, 6 rolls and a cooked meal. Everything was very tasty and reasonably priced.

We ordered take-out, which might be part of the problem. We got a chicken and a shrimp Hibachi dinner, one w noodles one w fried rice. I wish there had been more veggies (like at Saporo East in Camp Hill) and both the shrimp and chicken were overcooked. The shrimp was still tasty but the chicken was dry and tough. I expected better. The soup that came with was not our cup of tea; the menu claimed there was a shrimp appetizer but I guess you don't get this with takeout? The salad was terribly basic but I think that's common for japanese restaurants. I think that the overall cost of dinner ($42 for everything, they didn't give me an itemized bill to keep) was very overpriced. I also tried the sushi sampler appetizer and was not at all impressed. I'm a sushi newbie but if I had to base my opinion of raw sushi on this, I wouldn't ever get it again. I was told 20-25 minutes and I actually thought I was late, but I had to wait 5-10 minutes, and the wait was for the hibachi dinners which he was clearly cooking to death. I'll be looking for someplace else near Progress area for good Hibachi, we won't be going back.

Best sushi in the area, in our opinion, and we've tried most of them. The pieces of fish are much bigger than you'll find at other local spots, and they have a great selection of rolls. If you get a spicy salmon hand roll, you'll get big pieces of salmon with some spicy mayo mixed in -- not the minced mush that you'll find elsewhere. Personally, I can't recommend this place enough. Staff is very nice and attentive. Decor is excellent compared to places like Fuji Do or Tokyo Diner. Prices are very, very reasonable. Check it out.

This was my second time at Sakana and I will be going back. Good service, good food. We wanted sushi and hibachi so they let us order the child hibachi and it was a very nice size and only around $8. They have some interesting rolls but I ordered the sushi appetizer $6.95 for 4 large pieces and the fish was fresh and delicious. BYOB and nice decor

It was a nice place, clean and nicely dimly lit. Food was excellent quality, some of the best salmon sashimi I've ever had. I had a sashimi appetizer, sunomo, and green tea ice cream. Very fresh foods, but some things could have been made better or more reasonably priced...my sunomo was a little bland; could have had more vinegar and sugar and also was pricey for the amount I got. Ice cream had some annoying ice chips in it. However, sushi/sashimi was great. Service was a little slow but then again we were a huge group. Service was very polite however. I'd recommend it for people who live around that area but personally I'd go to Benihana for hibachi (closer to me and better in some ways..Sakana was a bit of a drive for me.) All around, Sakana is alright. I would stick to the sushi and also hibachi, since I heard the hibachi is good.

This is a nice restaurant to eat at for the atmosphere and cleaniness alone. The food is a mixed bag, but considering the cleaniness of some of the other japenese restaurants in the area, this is a safe bet. Again, I was in the mood for Hibachi and my wife sushi, so we ate at the non-Hibachi tables. An ironic thing happened though. The wife got the sushi, which was pretty standard according to her. The hibachi, while being cooked for others at the Hibachi tables with fried rice, came out to me from the kitchen with noodles. Again. Another place that serves noodles with their Hibachi. How hard is it to fry rice? Has to be one of the easiest japanese cooking things to do, especially compare to Sushi. So this was 2 restaurants in a row I got noodles with my Hibachi. The chicken and vegetables were standard, nohing amazing, but at least they gave me the usual Hibachi sauces. Next time I am sitting at the Hibachi table. I would definitely try it again based on their decor and atmosphere. They have a dimly lit romantic setting, with nice lights and artwork. Ther service was ok, note great but not rude. Prices were a little on the expensive side compared to other places. 3 stars for the setting, 2 stars for the food.

Warm atmosphere and friendly staff. Rolls were a nice size for a good price. Fish was fresh and tasty. I will be making this place a regular stop on dining out adventures. Only four stars because only one Hibachi chef was on duty on a Saturday night so someone in our party who doesn't eat sushi was limited to what they could order. Aside from that great overall time!

My husband an I decided to try Sakana since it is closer to our house than Benihana. The sushi was great and the spicy salmon for my Mexican Roll were huge and tasted great! The only issue I had with the sushi was making up mind on which one to choose. The chicken was seriously the best I have every had. I really liked the atmosphere and the staff were wonderful. The only drawback is that they do not serve alcohol so you have to bring your own, unfortunately my husband likes Sapporo which is a Japanese beer and apparently Benihana is the only place to get it. We will definitely be back to dine again at Sakana and I would recommend any Hibachi and Sushi lover to try it out, it was cheaper than Benihana as well.

Travel all over the country for work and this is as good a Sushi stop as I have found. Fresh sushi. Good service. Love that it is BYOB...means bringing your favorite wine. Great for the family, date night, or with friends. We are there 2x a month-never disappoints

Sakana recently changed hands and is under new management. The food quality remains quite good. They've rearranged the interior a bit, opening things up. There are even a couple of tables outside now. From speaking with staff, I learned that the menu is going to receive an infusion of pan-Pacific dishes. Jones Salpan, the new owner-operator, reportedly has a wide repertoire, including Korean and Filipino cooking. According to a recent Facebook post from Sakana, they will be offering complimentary appetizers with hibachi dinners, as well as "sushi tasting packages." The latter has my interest piqued. I'm very interested to see how things progress. Finally -- almost forgot -- Sakana is ramping up its promotional efforts, including with Clipper Magazine. As of this review, they have three coupons in the latest edition, including one for a $5 off a check of $30 or more.

I came to Sakana on a Saturday night and the first thing I notice was how packed and lively the place was. We were instantly greeted with a big smile and a welcome. First thoughts of our waitress was how friendly she was. She greeted us and introduced herself. They have great amounts of sushi selections! I decided on the Mt. Fugi, Blue Mountain and some basic rolls while my date ordered a shrimp and chicken hibachi meal. As we waited, I noticed just how lively the hibachi side was. I could hear the laughter and claps from the crowds as the hibachi chef did his show! The sushi was just simply delicious. Our hibachi meal was also great: nicely cooked and seasoned and the portion was huge. This has to be one of the best places to eat in Harrisburg. The service was great. Our waitress was very attentive and kept our drinks filled. The vibe in the restaurant was a warming one and the place itself was very clean. The food was a complete success! Simply delicious. We also learned they do deliveries and take out! We will be back for more sushi and to try the hibachi side. Will definitely be seeing more of us!

We came up on a Saturday and had a party of 18 for my mothers birthday. We made reservations and they accommodated our party quite well even. We had hibachi and sushi. The lemongrass beef sticks were succulent. The onion soup and ginger dressing salad that accommodated our meals were refreshing. For sushi we had the Mt. Fuji as per recommendation from our waiter. It was very good and was topped with baked salmon, yummy! For hibachi I ordered the salmon and it was very good, very delicious. The chef was very entertaining and humorous. All in all it was a fun time celebrating with family. We will be back!

I put in a pick-up order last night. The call was during peak dinner, so when I was informed that it would take 45 minutes that was not problem. If only it took such little time! I arrived at the restaurant right at the 45 minute mark. The place was extremely busy, so I grabbed a seat at the bar and tried to get someone's attention. 15 minutes later, someone finally asks me if I'm waiting for an 11 top. I say "no, I'm waiting for a pick...". Before I finished my sentence the server walked away. Thinking that he was going to grab my order, I sat patiently. 10 minutes later, I am flagging down someone AGAIN. The person I got said he was working on the order. 30 minutes later....flagging someone down AGAIN. Miraculously, my order is finally ready! They take 20% off my order for the wait. When I get hime with the food, of course the hot dishes are lukewarm to cold. Some of the sushi is fine, but others are tough. The service was atrocious, and the food, well, may have ben average if I had received things at the proper temperature.

Update! Sakana is under new ownership so we went back to see if things improved. They have! The chef was personable, entertaining and made great food, too! I now would recommend coming here with family and friends. We will be back!

One of the best sushi. You can tell the ingredients are fresh just by the taste of the seafood. Waiters wetter attentive, my water was filled up all the time.

Very nice and big restaurant inside. The environment are good. Big parking lot. They have sushi bar and lots of hibachi table. The hibachi chef were good entertaining the guest at the hibachi table. And the food were good. The sushi also good . And also BYOB. Definitely good place to eat. Will come back for more for sure.

The hibachi show is good, the regular beef is pretty good (they also offer fillet mignon). The sushi was very good. The wait staff gets overwhelmed and makes errors and service is slow when the restaurant gets busy.

Pretty good sushi here. We ordered the 5pc sushi appetizer, ESPN roll and a Mt Fuji roll as well as a hibachi dinner. The sushi had generous slices of fish, which tasted fresh. The soup wasn't a miso soup but an onion/mushroom type broth. The salad dressing was nice and refreshing, typical of sushi restaurants, but the salad itself was a bit lacking, simple ripped up iceberg lettuce. Strange fishy odor was coming from the kitchen.... The rolls were made nicely. Tight and didn't fall a part when bitten into. Good flavor as well. The hibachi chicken was a bit dry and the fried rice had way too much garlic. I'd definitely come back for the sushi.

Best sushi in the area. Not the best service but definitely worth going. I'm not a fan of the hibachi but my husband is. I go for the Rock n Roll - eel, shrimp tempura, and cream cheese are the highlights. Smoked salmon sashimi is very good.

I stopped by here a few times when I visit Harrisburg and I must say that their sushi is by far the best! They have a wide selection of specialty rolls; the ingredients are fresh. The food has been consistently excellent. I love that they've added new appetizers and specials to the menu that you can not find anywhere else. I love the sakana salad and lemongrass beef skewers. So delicious! Great ambience, friendly staff and great prices. I will definitely be coming back.

This isn't the worst place ever. But I'm not coming back, for sure. We tried hibachi dinner here. First, it is BYOB, so that's worth mentioning. No problem with that - I just didn't get it from the web for some reason. Next, an employee or manager or someone kept eerily staring at the window at people. Or at the people in the restaurant. That was...strange to say the least. Food wise, it's nothing to come back for. The onion soup was decent, but I've had so much better. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't good. The salad lettuce was fresh, but again, nothing special in terms of hibachi salads. The hibachi cooking part was the real problem for me. The shrimp were vastly overcooked - I've been to so many hibachi places I know the order things should be cooked by heart. Shrimp shouldn't be left on for the whole entire time. They had a hard crust on the edge. Ugh. Steaks were fine - not the worst quality meat, but fairly fatty and both the normal steak and filet seasoned with an exorbitant amount of soy sauce / teriyaki. The rice was actually frozen rice - we could still see the ice chunks when it was thrown on the grill. Having fresh rice is really important to fried rice, so that was dissappointing. To follow it, again, it was doused in soy sauce. The veggies were the worst though - normally one of my favorite parts, I couldn't even eat them. It was like drinking a shot of soy sauce and chasing it with undercooked broccoli. To end it all, it was fairly expensive in terms of hibachi. I am comparing of course to prices out of town, but also in cities nearly 5-6 times the size of Harrisburg (both in Cincinnati and Orlando I can get hibachi meals like this for 2/3rd the price). So that was disappointing. Nothing to come back to. Maybe their sushi is better?

I have been to Sakana several times and have received consistently excellent food and service. Unlike some sushi places, the menu here has multiple pages of sushi rolls to choose from. I usually go for rolls that are cooked and they have a great selection. On top of the fabulous and flavorful sushi, the hibachi is also top-rate. The proverbial icing on the cake is the fact that Sakana is byob. Nothing better than a white wine paired with sushi or sashimi. Happy eating!

Best sushi in Harrisburg hands down. Have tried all the other sushi places and nothing compares. Plus it is BYOB so how could you go wrong.

We just moved here from Philadelphia last week, where food quality and taste is above the national average (undisputed). Good sushi is hard to come by. Excellent sushi is practically unheard of. For the quality and amount of food that you receive, the prices were cheap, in my opinion. We're used to paying so much more. The owner and staff were pleasant, warm and very welcoming. Special requests on your favorites are welcomed. When quality, fresh ingredients meet at the corner of cost effective, you'll find me there!

Hibachi dinners are pretty good here. The majority of their "crab" sushi rolls use imitation crab (or crab stick)... which I'm not a fan of. When ordering take out, I usually add a good 15 or 20 minutes to the time that they claim it will be ready, because it usually takes at least 45 minutes for them to prepare 2 hibachi take out meals (at 4pm when there is only 1 table of people in the place). Overall the hibachi is good, but I wish they used actual crab meat in sushi rolls and I wish service wasn't so slow.

I spent 37$ on an order and only half of it was delivered, When I called the restaurant they wanted to argue with me about it. The first person I spoke to told me he would keep it as a credit for me for when I ordered next. I told him I was not sure I was ever going to order from them again. I asked to speak to the manager. When she came on the phone she agreed to send out my salads. Then they had the nerve to call back and say they checked their cameras and they had proof my salads were in the bag they sent out. You've got to be kidding me. I'm asking them to send out to salads of iceberg lettuce and they have the nerve to fight with me like this. Like I would lie about two salads! I will never, ever order from them again

After working at an authentic Japanese restaurant while in college in Denver, I doubted the quality of any sushi/Japanese place in HBG. I was very impressed! The cuts of fish are large and rice was appropriate size and not over flavored. The rolls are also impressive to say the least. Hibachi was excellent and entertaining, but i missed the mustard sauce. Staff was incredibly friendly and prompt as well. Traditional Japanese food was excellent and they've added some Asian fusion dishes...lemongrass beef was served on a skewer and we couldn't get enough! This place changed owners recently and it seems to have evolved a bit. ...I ate WAY too much!!!

We greatly enjoyed our dinner at Sakana! The dishes were delicious, and the food was of great quality. You can tell that they really take care in the overall taste and customer satisfaction of the food, which is awesome! I would have to say that all of our dishes were tasty, and our favorites so far were the Lemongrass Beefsticks, Mt. Fuji Roll, and Special Seaweed Salad. So delectable! There are so many other dishes that we definitely want to try as well, and we are looking forward to visiting again soon! I left Sakana feeling so stuffed, and as an added bonus, it is a BYOB!

I don't go to many Chinese restaurant but I like coming to this place. The people were friendly and got a show from the chef it was neat and the food is good. I had the shrimp and chicken from the hibachi part of the menu and I would defiantly get that again. They accommodate to taste or if it not cook to there liking. It is a pricy but well worth it if you want to go for a special occasion or just for some good food. I would go again.

Love the hibachi, just don't like certain aspects of it...the fried rice is always done first and gets cold by the time the main meat entree is ready. I find myself trying to awkwardly pick at it while the chef is still cooking. I don't want to be "one of those people," but I also don't want cold food! Otherwise, everything is delicious!

Best sushi place in the Harrisburg area hands down! They use larger pieces of tuna instead of ground tuna for their spice tuna rolls - which is a better consistency for me. There is plenty of variety to choose from. Even if you are not a raw fish eater, there's plenty of cooked food to choose from as well. The prices are fairly decent - I usually get two rolls and the mochi for dessert. After tax and tip I pay $20-22 bucks. Lost a star for not having a liquor license. =[

  • Mike T.

This place has gone downhill. Dirty, nasty, grimey. A place serving raw food should focus on being clean. The sushi chef was cleaning his station with a rag that I wouldn't use to clean a toilet. Taste off the fish was off. End result...horrible stomach pains that started on the ride home. We will be sticking to Sapporro and Miso from here on out.

This and M sushi house are my current places for sushi in Harrisburg. It used to be Miso, but their rolls were just too sauce-heavy and a bit pricey. Sakana's rolls are simply more tasty, with more fish! Waitress service is just -OK-, but Sushi chefs Peter and Van will hook you up! Have not tried the hibachi.

I will give this a 3.5. The rolls were decent and a decent price. Service was fine. Did not get hibachi.

Best Japanese hibachi in south central PA. Hands down. Better than Sapporo or Benihana; more for your money and the food tastes better, in my opinion. Try the noodles, they're less filling than rice and delicious! Great sushi as well. I always get the hibachi salmon, which has yet to disappoint. Make reservations for Friday or Saturday evenings for dinner after 6pm, as it fills up quickly and stays packed. Never tried take-out, it's better to dine-in. That's the point of hibachi anyway, the experience of the chef cooking in front of you. No liquor license so they offer two complimentary beers.
