After a very busy day at a crowded event it was perfect to stop by for a quiet dinner. We ate at the bar, game was on, and Sandy was delightful. I had the salmon on the cedar and and it was divine! Dan enjoyed the lobster risotto. We found the prices and quality were on par and would highly recommend for dinner with two or an intimate gathering. Wonderful!

dinner tonight with several co-workers that was really good. started off with the winter-citrus salad that was a spinach base with goat cheese, walnuts, cranberries and oranges. I expected s citrus taste, but thought the dressing was a little overwhelming. toned down a bit and this would have been a 5 star rating. Main course was the sea scallops served over Mac and cheese and spinach. I must not have paid attention to the menu because I didn't realize it came with Mac and cheese, but it was surprisingly good! Very filling. I couldn't finish the pasta.

Loved my first time here. I had the short ribs which was juicy and tender. Great flavor with the sauce. We also had the three course meal which included the house salad, steak and frites, and carrot cake. Everything in the house salad was super fresh and crisp, the vinaigrette was flavorful yet not over powering. The steak was cooked a perfect medium and seasoned well. The carrot cake dessert was moist and delicious . My one gripe would be the service. It was slightly slower than I would have liked. Definitely would come back again.

Expensive for the service. The food is just ok, nothing to write home about. I was impressed with lunch. I thought the turkey club was great however pricey. We had our engagement dinner here, and while we spent well over 2K on wine, and dinner for all our family and friends, there were a number of little things I thought were unacceptable. My husband had to ask repeatedly for more water as did most of our guests. They gave us no bread plates or appetizer plates. We were looking to show off, after our engagement, this place did not do the job.

Very disappointed. I called the day before a dinner meeting with a client and was assured there would be a vegan option that the chef would make....had no idea the only option would be a side salad with sour dressing. The waitress was fine when I said it was ok and I would just make dinner when I got home. Will not be back.

Happy hour food specials rocked! Sat at the bar and had the fried Gouda with blueberry sauce, and the pork with house made barbecue sauce with Boursin polenta. It was awesome! At 7 bucks each it was a great deal for what we got. Especially the pork. It was a rich pork belly, and the polenta was fantastic. I would return for that dish. We split the Duck ragu, it too was excellent. The drinks were tasty and well made. The popover and the cheese biscuit that came with the entrée were warm and tasty. The food here has improved immensely over the last year.

Needs to have something a little more enticing in menu, ambience and service to make it worth our while

Loved it! This was a lovely summer for outdoor dining and the atmosphere was fabulous. I have eaten there 4 times this summer-2x's happy hour, 1 lunch and 1 dinner. I was not disappointed. The pricing is high for lunch and dinner but so was the quality of the food and service. The prices and food offerings at happy hour were reasonable with nice appetizer offerings. I cannot think of anything I had and did not enjoy. Definitely going back.

This is a great place to take customers or colleagues. The patio is awesome. I recommend the pork chops or the beef pasta. The portions are a little small, but the food is tasty.

whoa... went here for the first time and all I can say is STICKER SHOCK. This place is not cheap if you want a steak. The food was good but wow, not cheap. Google their menu first for the prices before you go just in case its more than what you want to spend. I can not justify more than two stars based on the high prices when there are better places for a great steak and crabcake for much less but the food was very good as well as the service.. two stars but bumping up one star for the quality and service.

I have been here more than once and the food and service has been very uneven. For the pricing level it should be better. The meals I have had have not been good and on our last trip we were given a $50 gift card to compensate us for both the food and delivery of same.

I met two girlfriends for lunch here about a week ago. We had a wonderful experience. The food was great. I had a large tuna sandwich and a cup of soup. It was perfect. The waiter we had was fun and we made jokes with him, and it was fine. We paid separately for our meals. For the tuna sandwich with chips, two drinks, a cup of French onion soup and a dessert my bill was $28. It always amazes me when I read these reviews from people who complain because the restaurant did not cater to their unusual food requests. I can't believe everyone expects every restaurant to serve special dietary requests. If you are one of those people who have a special diet don't you think you should go check out the restaurant first before sitting down and ordering? Whatever... This was a very nice place, warm atmosphere, good food well priced. I would strongly recommend it.

Another excellent meal from one of the most reliable eateries in the region. Crab and corn chowder unique and delicious, perfect comfort food for a cold Fall evening. Scallops were excellent, though mustard sauce overwhelmed their delicate taste if used to much. Mint creme brulee surprisingly good with just a faint mint taste. Thanks, Jen, for superior service!

One of the best places I've ever eaten at in Harrisburg. And you don't have to drive into Harrisburg, just another plus. I had thier special- Scallops and gnocchi and it was divine. Everyone else I was with had the steak salad, which really was pretty run of the mill, actually. Branch out, try something a little different and I think you'll be happy and keep coming back. The atmosphere is pretty typical upscale restaurant but I loved how nonchalant and silly our waiter was during dinner. I think there is a mismatch between decor and attitude, but I liked it. Extensive wine list but our waiter wasn't that knowledgeable- if they had a sommelier, I didn't know about it, although I would have loved to talk to one. When I came for breakfast with a larger group, I found it nothing special except the presentation. But really, eggs are eggs, just go the colonial park diner. Overall though, this will be my go-to upscale restaurant in the area. But just for dinner.

Attractive setting and excellent food! We had the crab cakes and filet. The crab cakes were wonderful. The filet was very good, but we deducted a star since a wooden skewer was lodged in the filet and had to be messily removed. The sides were very fresh tasting. The bathrooms were even very nice. Nice selection of wine and beer, we'll be back! As other reviewers noted, it is very loud at times. They have panels on the wall to absorb the sound, but there were a few times that we couldn't hear each other across the table.

One of my favorite places in Harrisburg to stop off and have a drink after work if the weather's anywhere near nice. Nice location, nice decor and a very nice outdoor patio (which was recently expanded), complete with fireplace. The food, in short, was excellent. The Kobe burger I had is hands down the best burger in town, bar none (although the chef and I have differing ideas on done-ness, I will admit he was right and I was wrong in the end.) The 5-spice Short Ribs were also extremely good. Everyone else has always had good things to say about the other dishes we had, especially the fish and steaks. They have a good variety of appetizers, including fresh oysters, which I have had twice now, and both times were excellent. Deserts, while nothing spectacular, are well done. The Creme Brulee was textbook perfect, the Nutella stuffed "French Toast" was very good, and the Chocolate Fondant was awesome. The service is excellent. Their servers are obviously very well trained; they are polite, attentive and unobtrusive. Their wine cellar is very well stocked, although a bit pricey. But then again, when was the last time you went to a restaurant with a good wine cellar that wasn't pricey? The good thing is, if you need some advice on choosing some wine that is, shall we say, less pricey, then they are more than happy to help you select something without making you feel like a cheap bastard. And that's a good thing. In the end, the best thing about Mount Hill is the bar. Their head bartender, Brad, is a very knowledgeable person. He knows his wines, beers and spirits very well, and they have an excellent selection to choose from. He's turned us on to some new things that we would have never heard of otherwise. It's worth it just to go to the bar and ask Brad what's good. He won't steer you wrong. UPDATE: 2/25/13 Unfortunately, Brad is no longer the bartender at Mount Hill. I understand he's moved on to a bar downtown somewhere, but I don't know which one yet. (If you find him, let us know!) So, the Mount Hill bar is just another average small bar now, although they still do have quite a good beer selection.

Went to Mount Hill for dinner last night. First visit in about two years. I would have to say they have made serious improvements. The food was outstanding and most things on the menu have a slight twist from the ordinary which makes it interesting. For example I had Shrimp Scampi with Filet Mignon. My date had Scallops which had an interesting mustard based glaze/sauce. We both enjoyed our meal. They have also installed sound deadening panels on the walls. That is much appreciated because the first time I was there I found teh noise level to be unbearable but now it is pleasant. I will say the prices are a bit on the high side but you get what you pay for. In this case, the quality is top notch.

It pains me to give this place a poor review. I have been wanting to try it for sometime and finally made it for lunch during the week. 4 of us go for lunch around 1pm. It isn't very busy and we are seated almost immediately. No problems there. One of the things that attracted me to Mount Hill Tavern was the old building. Based on the decor and the nice patio and outdoor deck, I would easily give it 4 stars, but the food and service has to be top notch as well. I can't say I was at all impressed with the food. First, it took at least 10 minutes before our server showed up. I thought this to be odd since it wasn't crowded or the lunch rush. When she finally showed, you could tell she was less then thrilled and wasn't very pleasant. Not rude, just not how I would want my employees to act in front of customers. So she takes our drink order. 3 ice teas and a water. It seems as if it takes quite some time to return again. In fact, we had all looked over the menus and knew what we wanted to order before she returned with the drinks. She did at that time mention the specials. It would have been more helpful had she done that BEFORE we decided, but no big deal. I ordered a 1/2 blackened chicken focaccia sandwich with a grilled caesar salad. Everyone else ordered the tuna salad and either a soup or salad. It took quiet some time for our food to arrive. Again, it wasn't busy so we thought it may be slightly quicker, but it wasn't a deal breaker. Food arrives and looks OK. It appears as if they grilled the romaine in my caesar salad which i normally like. I noticed the dressing. It was almost non existent! But the worst part was that they grilled the lettuce so long, it was wilted and soggy. Not being picky, I dug in. The small drizzle of caesar dressing i did get was tasty, just hardly any of it. On about the third bite, I tasted something I never want to put in my mouth again. A whole anchovy! YUCK. It was hidden so I never saw it. Now I realize that most caesar dressing it made with anchovies and I'm fine with that. That doesn't mean I want to eat whole ones. It would have been nice if they would have put that in the description, but again, not a deal breaker. The sandwich was just unimpressive. It had almost zero flavor. It was just meh. Honestly, the best part of my lunch was the crispy potato chips that were served with my sandwich. Everyone else shared the same feelings about their lunch. Lettuce was wilted and soggy from over grilling. Caesar dressing was minimal and everyone else thought it was odd with whole anchovies on the salad. Tuna salad sandwich reviews were "bland" to "just OK". Service was poor. Bill was about $50 plus tip. Not out of this world, but the food just didn't hit the mark, and the service was poor. I would probably return to have a cocktail on the deck or patio and enjoy this old building and the decor, but I think I'll pass on the food.

Lovely location. Entrees had appealing presentations and the menu has some seasonal changes. Grilled Reuben, Kobe burger, crab cakes, and fish & chips were great lunch options. Some dinner entrees pricey for what you get.

I really enjoyed my evening out at the Mount Hill Tavern, I decided after looking at the menu that going for a starter, soup and salad which all sounded very appealing and ended up really enjoying a variety of tasty dishes. We went for the crabcake (best crab cake I have ever ordered), the spicy chickpea soup, the seasonal lettuces salad... amazing with fresh greens and sugared walnuts, the fried calamari salad... another instant favorite and topped it all off with desserts that were very fresh and nicely presented. Nice atmosphere built inside a expanded stone home with a modern twist. Very friendly managers and wait staff as well. Our whole party enjoyed their meals, the first courses more so than the entrees but still really delicious, I look forward to dining there again.

Amazing food & Drinks. Great service! I was starting to think Harrisburg was void of fine dinning, but this has to be the best restaurant in Harrisburg. A must try for those truly like to dine on fine food.

SERVICE: Was contacted by the owner after my 1 star review to bring my group back. I attempted to go a few months ago by calling ahead for a group of 12 for happy hour and still experienced the same basic issue: 1 bill for groups.....sadly I had to drop the owners name and then got a change in the attitude on the phone. We needed to cancel due to rain (patio was all they could do to accommodate us). Went back yesterday with 10 people. I called in advance again and although there was no attitude, I see the 1 bill for a large group policy had not changed although the owner stated that it had after my 1st post on this site. I must admit we had good service from what I think was the manager and she didn't give us any issue with splitting the bills. It's important to note that I had a gift certificate from the owner that had his name on it, so it's near impossible to know if the service was contrived of not. I will give her the benefit of the doubt, so I raised the rating by a star. Consistent good service is the key to having people return. We will try them again and I'll provide another update later. FOOD: The food was good but but I wasn't overwhelmed. Calmari wasn't the best I've had - just ok, the wild boar burger was very tasty, artichoke dip good, cheese board - ok but too small, breaded gouda with blueberry compote was insteresting (good), and the oysters where very good. OVERALL: Great venue, improved service, decent happy hour menu although only $1 off drinks all equals they're working on improvement. I'm cautiously optimistic. Call ahead with a group.

Very nice setting and atmosphere...good (not great) food... good service... phenonomal beer selection. Only real complaint is that the patrons tend to be on the stodgy side so younger, although well-to-do, customers may feel a bit out of place.

Visited a week ago with friends and family. Everything was average for the place and pricing. The table we were sat at was right near the server station so there was a lot of them standing right behind our table when they weren't serving theirs. Our appetizer course was delicious. Our table had the fried calamari, cheese board, and crispy smoked gouda. Next, myself and another had the crab and grilled corn chowder, again extremely good. But the excellent food seemed to end there. Three of us had the NY Strip and none were done as specified. And for the cut of meat and the price, the meat was tough and cold. To top off the problem with the steaks, the server neglected to bring steak knives. When my other half asked for one, he brought one for him and him alone. He ended up sharing his knife with the others. One would think to bring a steak knife when a person orders steak, and then especially when a diner asks for one, to bring the others at the table one as well. The rest of us had no issue with our food (wild game burger, crab cake, chicken, and two pasta dishes). Drinks were very slow in coming, though not sure why (almost wanted to order two at a time) and spent most of my entree without one. For the price, food and service should be excellent. Will probably not go back.

Excellent restaurant that met all my needs. I ordered the sirloin steak which was cooked perfectly. The sides (mushrooms and fingerling potatoes) served as a great complement. The place is upscale, but is not "stuffy" and I enjoyed the atmosphere.

I mentioned to the hostess that I was vegan and she sneered, should have left right then and there. But I figured soup and salad would be fine for lunch. I then told the waitress I was vegan and ordered the roasted tomato soup. I was informed that the tomato soup is made with beef stock with an attitude of You idiot don't you know tomato soup is not vegetarian. Ok house salad. Now something for my son. Kids menu at an upscale restaurant has English muffin pizzas? The hostess told my son that the kids meals were small. The prices were quite big. $12 for a kids fish and chips. And this is at lunch! The staff made no effort to make suggestions for a vegan meal, in fact they made me feel like I was putting them out. After ordering and reflecting on the attitude, we canceled our order and left. I had really wanted to try this place based on friends recommendations and was really disappointed.

This was my first visit to Mount Hill Tavern...what a huge disappointment. It started out badly when I order a "featured" appetizer of Fresh Ahi Tuna Roll $7.00. It was cold and there was so little tuna it just tasted like rice roller up in some nori. Bad. My husband ordered Salmon cooked on a plank with Kale. It was the smallest piece of Salmon (farm raised I am assuming since there was no mention to the contrary) and a little bit of mushy looking Kale...32.00 Everything was presented nicely, but really isn't any excuse for ordinary food with a big ticket prices. The restaurant also had on the menu a Kobe Beef Burger. This is doubtful and misleading. Attached in a link to back this up. forbes.com/sites/larryol… I would never recommend Mt. Hill Tavern for dinner to anyone. Lunch? Can't say.

Traditional American fare with an upscale presentation. It's hard to top Mount Hill in central PA. I was slightly disappointed that they only had one lamb fish left at 6 pm but he chicken saltemboca was very nicely prepared. (Last time I was there they only had one Cuban sandwich left come to think of it. I guess it is good the chef only buys what he thinks he will sell that evening) The wine list is considerable and there are bottles in all price ranges. The servers are knowledgeable and on the spot if not a little informal for an upscale restaurant.

I've been here for lunch several times and you can't beat it if you want a nice sit down restaurant in the area. They have a lunch special that is $10 for 1/2 sandwich and soup or a salad which is a decent price. The food is decent and commensurate with the price. Wait staff is nice and attentive. You can make a reservation but it's never crowded here during lunch time, there's outdoor seating and ample parking. If you are in the area I'd recommend it but I would not recommend driving more than 8 miles to eat lunch here.

  • Diane W.

Both the wine and the appetizers are overpriced, The calamari was so cold we had to send it back, but the two little pieces of breaded mozzerella weren't all that warm either. The room we were placed in had about 4-5 tables in an enclosed area, so the noise was deafening. Outside dining might be a better option over this room. The pear salad was horribly overdressed--it was all I could taste and I might as well have been eating straight iceberg lettuce. My pasta arrived lukewarm and the chicken very overdone, with the pasta being undersauced and too al dente. The ribs appeared to be tasty, as was the fish and chips.
