Still in search of the hard-to-find Munik Indonesian spice packets in Harrisburg, we stop in at Little Saigon Food Market. A fairly large market with a decent selection of items, we spent some time wandering through the store. Unfortunately they did not carry Munik (even though I was told that I could find the spices there). They did have almost every other Indonesian brand of spices there, though. *sigh* But we did find some nice Vietnamese cakes in the refrigerator and bought a few other things like ginger and shallots (they had some really nice small ones there in the red mesh bags). I'll definitely go back here if only for the cakes.

This is a typical Asian supermarket - a little shady, a little dusty, and has pretty much everything you need. They have a pretty good selection. I wouldn't buy any fish here because they don't seem fresh at all - stick to their frozen stuff. The market itself is probably only 3 stars, but it gets another one for its Vietnamese beef jerky. It's AMAAAZING. It's always tender and flavorful, and I always bring tons of packs back with me to Philly whenever I visit Harrisburg. I've yet to taste better.

I've been going to Little Saigon for about 6 months now. Although I think Eight and eight has a better selection of groceries, Little Saigon also has a lot to offer. They have very friendly employees and they will help you find what you need if you're not able to locate them yourself. They've got a pretty good variety of Asian condiments, noodles, spices, and mixes -- Filipino, Malaysian, Thai, Vietnamese (they are after all, called Little SAIGON), Chinese and some Japanese. Beware of their condiments and mixes though -- make sure to check the expiration dates on them. When I went today, they had quite a few items that expired in 2007 (!) but were still on the shelves (almost all of the Lee Kum Kee condiments were expired!). I'm a bit wary of their frozen selection too as some of them don't have packaging/expiration dates so you can't really tell how old they are. Their vegetables, for the most part, are fresh but Eight and eight has a better selection (I'm just waiting for them to re-open at their new location). If you're into Vietnamese food, try out the restaurant right beside it (also called Little Saigon). It's not as good as Rose's but I still love it.

Little Saigon is your typical Vietnamese / Asian supermarket. It's located right off of Paxton Street, near the intersection of 29th & Paxton and with easy access to i-83. they have all kinds of imported stuff from the orient, mostly korean, chinese, vietnamese, thai and indonesian. they have some meat and fish and fruits that i've always been suspicous about, (is it fresh or not, and if it wasnt would you tell me anyway, even if i asked politely?) i used to get certain types of food here, like oxtail and triple. sometimes they have it, sometimes not. there are sweet cakes, soy milk, longan, leche, durian, clam meat, fish, squid, cocount milk, crab meat, fish crackers, pineapples, corn, mie, noodles, .... pots, pans, plates, steamers, wonton skins, potatoes, cucumbers, carrots, single eggs, tomatoes, tarot, jackfruit, tofu, spring rolls, beansprouts, lettuce, jalapenos, bread rolls, vietnamese hoagies. a vietnamese hoagie is only 1.75, but well worth it is mega spicy and sweet at the same time. its basically a roll thats glazed wit ha sweet sauce, sliced orange & white carrots, sliced pork and jalapeno peppers. DELICIOUS!!!! they do have some types of indonesian herbs, spices and ketchup, seasoning stuff like that. but i have noticed short-dated items, and at least 1 item that had the expiration date blacked out (it was expired). Little Saigon is a staple of the community though. they guys who own this also own the jumbo buffet building next door, it also has a quiznos, Xpose nail salon and car repair shop, Autorizon. These people are seriously nice, they teach me one word of vietnamese each time I go there. And they usually have three indonesian people there too, so its cool i can practice my indonesian skills, which are terrible. They have bulletin board when you first walk in that has various ads and messages in vietnamese that advertise cars for sale, apartments and houses for rent, nail salons available, church services, transportation and so forth. There is usually a lady at the cash register, and they only take cash, credit or EBT.... and it actually IS wheelchair accessible. pulling out of this place and trying to turn left is impossible, but parking is usually alright. update 6-23-08 this place is under new ownership, they've changed things around, lowered some of the prices, but not make the vietnamese subs to-go for only 3 dollars, but ill tell you its not quite what im used to, good but not great.

Attached to the restaurant, this store is great to waste time in either before or after your meal. They have a pretty decent sized candy section where is the majority of my time and money is spent in. They always have a table right as you walk in with the standard saran wrapped plastic mystery dishes, and most of the time fresh basil or some other leafy green. They have a pretty decent fridge section with various drinks and frozen dinner items. I'm partial to the Pork and Chicken steamed buns. Decent prices but unless you are spending over 10 dollars they don't accept credit cards.

Visited the market today. Was looking for Sobe noodles. Actually managed to find them as well as a bunch of other yummy things. I have not been to an asian market before so this was a new experience. The staff did their best to help when asked. The place is indeed wheelchair friendly. The ramp out front is a little steep and the metal railing is pretty much broken but its very wide and we made it fine. I was so impressed that the one lady pushed the cart out to the car for us. I will return here. Still not sure what alot of the stuff was. lol but fun.
