Great Sushi! Had the salmon avocado hand roll and it was perfect, we also had the kamikaze, rainbow, and a Philly roll and the sushi was fresh and delicious. Though I thought the rolls were a bit small they were very tasty. Loved the BYOB since we already had a wine bottle in the car. Will definitely be back.

About 3 stars. I've been to this place 3 or 4 times. In my opinion, it's hit or miss kind of place. First time we went for sushi which were ok but not much impression. Another time some coconut soup, rolls & vegetarian fried rice -it was pretty good. Third time ...I have no recollection because it's that uneventful kind of meal. Today, I ordered vegetable lo main to go- while the noodles were cooked ok there were barely any vegetables-maybe 4 semicircles of paper thin zucchini, few broccoli, some remnants of carrots and mostly canned little corn & chestnut. Should've made a picture of it. Meh kind of place.

Honesty I don't get the 3 1/2 stars 4 maybe. The service was ok, but the fish is so fresh. This place is great for both sashimi and speciality rolls. I recommend the amazing roll that lives up to the name. I use yelp for everything, but it absolutely wrong when it comes to this place. We never would have tried here if we went off the reviews and I am so glad we didn't.

Tried Salmon Tariaki and Pad Thai shrimp, both were very good.

With how often I eat here I am long overdue for a review of this little gem. The sushi lunch special is excellent value and always delicious. I highly recommend expanding into the specialty rolls as well they never disappoint. Tiger roll is my absolute favorite. I can't speak for anything but the sushi because I haven't ordered anything else in the probably 50+ times I have been here because it is just that good, there is no need. Keep up the great work!

It's a really cute place in a strip mall. I ordered the red curry with shrimp. There were lots of large shrimp in the dish, which was great because usually you get only a few. The veggies also seemed fresh. I just wish the flavor and spice of the curry were more on point. My husband ordered the chicken with garlic sauce, and it was really good but it came out lukewarm. Most dishes were around fifteen dollars. There are no free refills and it's BYOB.

Han Dynasty has become the 800 pound gorilla in Chinese dining in this area. It's authentic and Americanized menu, along with the quality of its food, has helped it grow into the powerhouse it has become. Once upon a time, Exton was home to the only Han around. Now that it is so popular, getting food to go on a busy Friday night we had over an hour wait, forcing us to seek other options as we were hungry. That's how we ended up at Unami. I'm not a sushi eater but am told it's an excellent sushi restaurant. I wanted only Americanized Chinese to go. The food came out quickly so we were on our way to take it home to enjoy. The Won Ton soup was disappointing. Mushy noodles, so-so broth. Egg Rolls were great. Crispy, tasty. Excellent with the hot mustard they included in your bag. General Tso's Chicken was good. I know it has a billion calories but it was done just right. In fact, it could have been even a little more spicy for our liking. Shrimp with garlic sauce was fair. Not spicy. Shrimp was so-so. Sauce so-so. Not great. Judged against Han in particular, for Americanized Chinese specifically, next time I'll pass and just go to the best in the area. I'll just do it earlier.

Best place for sushi, soup and all kinds of Asian dishes. We probably order from here once a week.

Disclaimer: I am not a sushi connoisseur. However, I know when sushi is good and I know what I like, and this place fits the bill! I typically get take out for lunch, and you really can't beat the sushi lunch special here. For $11.50, you get 3 sushi rolls and your choice of Miso soup or a green salad. I've had both (and both are great), but my preference is the Miso. Very, very good! As far as the sushi rolls, I usually get a spicy tuna, spicy yellow tail and spicy salmon. All are very good and not spicy at all. In terms of value, you can't get better quality sushi at this price anywhere around. This place is my official "go too spot" for sushi, and I will continue to frequent it in the future.

This restaurant is very overrated. On the yelp search it said Hibachi but when I arrived there was none. Waited for 5 minutes to be seated. Then got seated and I was brought a flat diet coke. Asked for water 3 times before arrived. Ordered gyoza appetizer and was 6 little pieces for 6 bucks. Ordered teriyaki steak for 18 and had to pay extra for a small cup of rice. $29 bill for a meal that was for a child. I could have ate 3 of these meals. Went to pay and had to wait another 5 minutes and cashier was unhappy that I had a $3 yelp coupon. Find somewhere else. Going to order a pizza for dinner now

It's a solid 4-star joint. Not 5 stars, but 4. Sushi was fresh and there's a pretty good selection. But I would avoid going here on a date in the evening. I tried this and they like to pack you in next to other tables even if the restaurant is mostly empty. Also no music makes it an awkward place to eat. A few simple tweaks could go a long way. But ultimately, I'm addicted to their sushi and may need to attend therapy.

I've eaten here frequently with co-workers. They have good sushi lunch specials. However, I'm never going back. I ate here with a group of 8 yesterday. Two of us ordered sushi specials and the rest of the group ordered cooked entrees. One of the sushi rolls (yellowtail scallion) that my co-worker and I ordered was BAD. We reported it to the incredibly unfriendly server. She didn't apologize or offer to remove it from our bills. Also, I asked to have seaweed salad in place of green salad (included with the sushi lunch special) and was told it was an up charge. I wasn't expecting to pay the full price as if I ordered it as an appetizer. $16 for a terrible lunch and subpar service.

In town on a business trip craving sushi, so of course I turn to Yelp. Well, what's funny is that I looked at two other sushi places in the area before this one, both of which had higher ratings. Umami's sushi menu blew the other ones out of the water for me. I didn't even get past the current sushi specials, I already saw what I wanted. I call in a to-go order with the friendly girl on the other line. My pick was the Bumble Bee roll: shrimp tempura, spicy salmon, avocado, kiwi, wrapped in soy paper, topped with spicy mayo and honey wasabi mayo. That second mayo seemed interesting. I ordered both sauces on the side just in case. Picked up my order and redeemed my Yelp check-in discount without any trouble. The sushi itself was great! The sushi chef was good and followed instructions, putting my sauce on the side. (It seems this doesn't happen as often as it should.) The kiwi gave it a slightly refreshing kick to balance out the spicy mayo. (Honey wasabi was NOT for me, yuck.) Since I'll be on business here for a while, I'm naming Umami my go-to for sushi.

Good food, definitely the best Chinese food/sushi in the area. The basic stuff, General Tso's, fried rice, dumplings, etc. are well made. Nothing that's particularly inspired here, but if you want a good take out place, or sit down this is it. I wish they delivered.

Have been back to Umami a number of times over the years. Almost always find the food to be very good to excellent quality with average service. Portions are small to average size. Given that prices are also at the higher end of Sushi spots, I think this is generally a get what you pay for type of spot with consistent food quality.

I took a friend of mine to dinner here Friday night (10/04) and it was a pretty good experience. The waiter was a little timid and I had some difficulty understanding him at times, but the food was well-presented and delicious. I ordered the kamikaze roll and the spicy salmon; my friend ordered shrimp dumplings with fried rice and the Godzilla roll. Although we both used chopsticks, it was nice to see the standard fork and knife on our table in case anything happened (I am unbelievably clumsy with chopsticks). I liked the atmosphere of the place, although it seemed sparsely populated. I guess not much goes on in Exton on a Friday night. I would definitely go back.

Umami is a great sushi place. I have gone there several times and have not had a bad meal. I prefer sushi but my parents have eaten the chinese dishes as well and werent disappointed. Umami is great for those who love sushi but dont like the high prices of other sushi restaurants. Tonight we got one of their special roles the pacific ocean which was delicious and had excellent presentation. Byob is great because it cuts the bill down significantly. I definitely suggest Umami for sushi lovers in the chester county area. Reasonably priced and great sushi!

We went here to celebrate my grandfather's 83rd birthday, after reading the reviews we were pretty excited, that quickly changed once we got to the restaurant. The waiter was rude and made us feel as if we were unwelcome. A few of us ordered Pad Thai (which was OK) and salmon (which was also just OK). We ordered a steak for my grandfather and it was very dry and you had to have teeth of steel to chew it!! My grandfather tried hard to just eat it and not be rude- but I had to complain. When I did, they took the steak back and brought a plain piece of chicken on a tiny plate (I have never seen anything like this before at a reputable restaurant(- the waiter was really rude about it too. When another waiter came over to ask what was wrong and I tried to explain, she interrupted me by walking away half way through the conversation to answer the phone and never came back. I have been to many Japanese restaurants all over the country and I can honestly say that this was by far the WORST experience.

We ate there twice in the last week, and the food is great. We had terrific service. FYI, the Peking Duck, the Green Curry, and the Sushi all have to be some of the best around.

We've tried a lot of sushi restaurants and are constantly on the lookout for new places. This place beats all the other sushi/Japanese restaurants in the area. The service is excellent with a great selection of rolls and Japanese dishes. The sushi is OUTSTANDING. First, it's not just rolls on a plate, but it's presented with an artistic flair. They make the rolls with the freshest fish and ingredients and the taste just wows and amazes. We've been there a couple of times since they opened, tried a variety of the dishes and everything was phenomenal. From the spring rolls and the crab rangoons (AMAZING!!) to the sushi and pho noodle bowls.

Best Sushi I've ever had! And I've had a lot. Good service, cool atmosphere, incredible presentation and very reasonable prices. Still amazed there is sushi this good in Exton, PA. Do yourself a favor and go try it, I guarantee this will be your goto for sushi for now on.

The dining experience was a bit awkward as the entire staff of six or so stood behind or just in front of the bar and stared at the customers. We were the only customers at the time, so we got all of the staring. I couldn't tell if they were just bored, waiting to see if anyone needed something, or were trying to hustle us out despite the restaurant having only four or so tables filled when we left. The food was perfectly fine as was the service when the waiter was at the table. But, the staring was kinda creepy.

Food is great. Pick-up service is awful. At least 50% of the time the order is wrong. Recently we have been checking the order in the restaurant instead of driving home just to find out the order was screwed up again. The last example was we ordered $83 worth of food. We thought this was high since our pickups are usually around $60. We had 3 orders of steamed dumplings. We pay and open the order at the counter and no steamed dumplings. Instead they had down 3 fish dumplings. We were told "you will like the fish dumplings and to take them." Only issue, we didn't order them! Had to wait another 10 minutes after we already waited an extra 15 minutes on top of the 15 minute wait time they told us. We just wanted to leave so we asked them to credit us back the fish dumplings so we could just get out of there. We find out that 3 fish dumplings, not 3 orders, but just 3 were $27 dollars! So they wanted us to pay $27 for something we didn't order. No apology, no credit and for this and several other screw ups no more business.

Was a regular on take out with everything being great all the time. Then I tried eating there a couple times with pretty slow service and a couple order mix ups. Then I found a hair... Sayounara Umami :(

We visited here after reading positive reviews--but were sadly disappointed. We ordered 4 sushi rolls. All 4 were smaller than average for the money, with very little rice. Flavor was average with barely any "special sauces" for the specialty rolls. Their specialty rolls are not particularly creative; nothing sticks out as "must haves." Also, this place is not dedicated to sushi or Japanese cuisine; their menu contains as many generic "Asian plates" to satisfy the non-discriminating American eater. We were also surprised that the hot tea was not complimentary as it is at many other Asian restaurants. Though not an unpleasant experience, we were disappointed with the simply average flavor and small portions. We won't go back.

Food was fine and price was okay. The only sushi I ever ordered there was the uni on special, which was considered cheap, but they were fresh. I 80% of the time ordered the Singaporean rice vermicelli, which has many shrimps and the noodles were cooked just right to my liking. I dined in before but the food was not delivered quite quickly/reasonably quickly. The staff was okay but you can tell they are not quite professional, with attitude kind of like they are there because they have to be there to work. They are not particularly interested in taking very good care of their customers, but maybe it is because of their language barrier (often they speak in ways which may be considered rude to people here). So, i would just order takeout instead.

My boyfriend and I have been here a number of times. We always sit at the sushi bar with a bottle of wine. The sushi chefs are great. The food comes out quick and everyone is polite. I love the spicy tuna roll. My boyfriend always gets shrimp tempura and Boston roll. No complaints here!

Def the best sushi joint in West Chester/Exton area. Sadly I found this place only a week or two before moving out of state. Went around a typical dinner time on a weeknight. Place was rather busy but service was fast. Got seated and drinks out within minutes of arrival. Sushi ordered and made not long after. Sushi portion was huge compared to some of the other places I've eaten. Must try sushi place if you live in that area. Not as overpriced as some of the others in the area

I was really hoping this would be good and fresh sushi as I need a local sushi fix somewhere besides Wegmans. I ordered Shumai which was just ok. I ordered Summer Rolls which I normally love however these were so dry and the shrimp inside were either straight from the freezer or old as they were totally powdery. I couldn't even eat this appetizer. I ordered a sushi roll that had "crunch" on the outside and this was so soft and mushy that it just added to the mush flavor of the whole role. I threw $34 in the trash can. Bummer.

Enjoyed dinner at Umami. I had the Agadashi Tofu which is fried tofu. very tasty. We also had a Udon bowl which was very tasty. Service was attentive and not overbearing. Prices were ok.

BAD attitude to customers! I used to come here a lot and always order the lettuces wrap, but there was once that the lettuces wrap served became very less even not enough for wrapping two lettuces leaves. I told this to the manager (mid-age male) to bring his attention for avoiding this happen next time or to other customers. However, he told me it was the same serving amount as always without really listening to me and he suddenly left the table when I was still talking to him. I was shocked by how he reacted to customer's suggestions. His reaction was even not close to polite! This is the place I will never go ever!

I can only speak for two things here. Their wonton soup was flavorful but they use a thinner noodle than most so two will definitely be looking for more if you share it. Also, their general tso's chicken was mainly breading, stay away from it ($11).

This place is wonderful. Food is great, sushi is fresh and tasty, a great place to dine. Don't listen to the few poor reviews this is the best in the area. Noodle bowls are really good, as is terriyaki, and shrimp dishes. Love this place.

Ambiance - 4.5 Stars: I do like the interior of this restaurant, cool decor. Modern but still classic at the same time. Its comfortable. More upscale than a traditional Chinese restaurant. Service - 3 Stars: Their service isn't great. You do have the ask the wait staff for something multiple times, and they will forget portions of your order. Some of them don't understand or speak English very well. Food - 4.5 Stars: Umami has an interesting menu, most of it is what I would consider modern Asian/American, comparable to PF Changs dishes. It's more of an "Asian Bistro", definitely not authentic Chinese or Szechuan. With that being said, their food is still very good. Everything is prepared well, and seems fresh. It's not your normal Chinese take out restaurant where you're not sure if what you're eating is actually chicken or not. They have a nice variety of Asian foods, some of which are a fusion of multiple areas. Some Thai dishes, some Japanese dishes. A lot of really good choices. I have not had their sushi, only their hot dishes. Plating - 4 Stars: They plate their dishes quite nicely, aligning with the more upscale feel of the restaurant. Cost - 4 Stars: It's slightly more expensive than your standard Chinese fare, but the quality justifies the price. I would recommend Umami to anyone looking for an upscale Chinese restaurant, and is looking for something similar to PF Changs but with a bit more traditional feel. Overall very good, a solid 4 Stars.

Had take out for dinner. My son found a band aid in his crab rangoon. Doesn't get more disgusting than finding a bandage in your meal. Pass! Pass! Pass!

The "Taco Bell" of Asian cuisine! This place is not even close to good, and the offerings are not even remotely creative. We arrived with two bottles of Sake that should be served cold. The waiter immediately removed them from the table and took them in the back. I assumed that he was chilling them for us, as we just purchased them from the State Store a few doors down and they were room temperature. Alas, not only was our first bottle brought to the table at room temperature, but the second one as well. No hot towels either, which is nice at the beginning of a meal that you may need your fingers to eat. We also had to ask for chopsticks. Not cool. Now for the food - Totally tasteless Spicy Tuna Tartare, bland and uneventful Kamikaze Roll, mediocre Philly Hand Roll. We didn't even bother with the sushi, since what we were served was already unpleasant. About a mile east is Sakura, with all the amenities, and great food. We will never be back to this place.

We been going to Umami for a while, but last time my daughter and I order sushi, which smelled fishy. We returned it and manager/owner gave me such an attitude, didn't bother to apologize and started to argue with me, trying to prove as wrong. This was our last time; we will never come back to this place.

I was hard pressed to visit Umami since my standby sushi deal at Hibachi Downingtown is hard to beat. But I can't have a local sushi place that i haven't at least tried. So I grabbed my son and we ordered the sushi/sashimi love boat. Prices here are pretty standard ala cart, but the love boat is a pretty good deal fro two people. Almost more than we could eat. Nice selection of very fresh fish, and they where willing to substitute - including some uni!! Service fast, presentation excellent. Ran about $60 for the two of us. Umami deserves a visit if you haven't been yet - they are a BYOB also - which is a plus.

My boyfriend and I have eaten here frequently the past two years. The food is very good and the manager/owner is very friendly. However the service is horrible. Every time we go we always end up with the same 2 servers. One is a male and one is a female. They aren't friendly and basically just throw our food on the table. Tonight when we went I was placing my order and the server cut me off before I was even done. I was trying to tell him no onions when he cut me off and of course my rice had onions in it. I've had this server numerous times and was honestly afraid that if I sent my food back he'd spit in it. So I ended up having to sit there and dissect my food which caused me to not even want to eat it. My boyfriend and I have decided that if we purchase Umami again we will only buy take out so that we don't have to deal with the horrible service. I think it's pretty bad when the servers make me feel so uncomfortable that I don't want to eat there.

Pleasantly surprised! We have not had much luck with sushi restaurants since moving to the area...lots of overpriced mediocrity. While still a little pricey, the taste and quality were way above average for what we've experienced. They also have plenty of rolls, and non-sushi options to choose from. Service was a little slow, but they were packed. We will be back!

While living in West Chester, I tried several sushi places in Chester County on a mission to find the best one. I finally tried Umami the last few weeks I was in West Chester and was SO HAPPY I found it! However, was very sad I did not find it sooner. We got 2 regular sushi rolls and 2 special rolls - I believe we got the Lover Roll and the Naruto Roll for the special rolls. My car just broke down so our family dinner was cancelled and I was looking for something to brighten my spirits. We looked up nearby sushi restaurants and Umami came up. We went on a weeknight and it was not too busy. The service was very quick and friendly. This is by-far my favorite sushi restaurant in Chester County. A must-try! Sushi is delicious, fresh, and satisfying. I was extremely happy after dinner.

Clean and pretty inside, very busy on a Sunday evening. I ate the tom kha gai, which I try everywhere I go. Here it could have used a little more lime juice, but the chicken in it was excellent. Good summer rolls come with a different sauce from what I'm usually served elsewhere - this one was not peanutty at all. Skip the egg roll. My four-year-old loved the shrimp mango salad with the killer basil dressing - very good if you're looking for flavorful but not spicy. Sweet potato tempura roll and tuna avocado roll were pretty standard. Penang curry was delicious and spicy with a good variety of vegetables in it. Redeemed my check-in offer and have no regrets about this place!

This rating is based on sushi alone (spicy salmon, crazy, green dragon, spider rolls). salmon- worst I've ever had. crazy- don't like eel but it was ok. green dragon- same thing with the eel. spider- Enjoyed because anything fried tastes good. Left a huge tip cuz I won't ever be back. Service: Sushi guys/makers were friendly. Waitress told me "whatever" with a blank, not necessarily disturbed, face when I asked if we could change seats to the sushi bar. I thought it was funny but my family thought it was rude. (I'm sure she meant "whichever") Overall, not worth the sushi price and experience. Went here out of convenience but definitely regretted it afterwards. Also the oysters weren't fresh.

My wife and I have eaten there twice now. There is a slight language barrier, but the staff is very helpful and attentive. Try the sushi dumplings - great! Had the duck - not bad and the Panang Curry - very good. Will try the sushi on my next trip. Nice ambience and decor. Will be back!

  • John M.

My review is based on my experience with their sushi. I was apprehensive about this restaurant, since the menu depicted a mix of chinese and japanese dishes. This is a significant indicator of price setting and low quality food.. Usually these kind of businesses (mixed asian cuisine) take advantage of those who do no see this difference. Regardless, the sushi was mediocre at best. A critical test of sushi quality is the sashimi (raw fish slices). The tuna (maguro) was dark and immediately smelled, which is a sign of age. This is irresponsible, if not setting a bad example of true quality sushi. The prices were too high for the amount of rolls and cuts you received. I paid less for orders of rolls in Washington D.C. and Japan. This is a restaurant that takes advantage of individuals, who are ignorant to a relative, better sense of asian dining. This may sound counter-intuitive, but Wegman's sushi is of higher caliber. That was not a joke.
