We had a party of seven and everyone had an enjoyable experience. We all split more than a dozen rolls between us. The chef honored our request by plating them by vegetarian, cooked and raw. All the ingredients were fresh. The one cooked roll with the soft shell crab was excellent! The avocados were fresh and the warm roll with the banana was an interesting experience. I had dinner at Sogo just a week prior and I would choose the Plum House over them easily. Sogo seems to have become complacent. Still good, but not as good as they used to be. Continuing with the Plum House. A few minor details of the overall experience prevented me from giving five stars. First, there is no website or menu available online. It is 2014,businesses need to have their info online. Second, the owner/chef was a little too chatty. I don't mind the chef coming over and briefly discussing the food but I really don't have interest in hearing about the troublesome air condition. Last, the bathrooms need an upgrade. I can only speak for the men's room. It was not dirty but it needs some cosmetic improvements. Maybe if the restaurant is successful this is something the owner can put some money toward. The last thing I will mention (not affecting my rating)is that it was almost completely dead. Only one other table was seated while we were there between 6-730 on a Saturday evening?!? This might have to do with the restaurant is not easily visible driving down the road. I would recommend the Plum House. Good sushi and it's BYO! Good luck to the Plum House! cheers!

I just want to say I don't know how I uploaded a picture of my own face, and I seem unable to take it down, so embarrassing! Please people, put up some pictures of the very nice food!

Although I was very sad to see the previous restaurant closed, I am thrilled that it was replaced with such a wonderful place. The food was phenomenal. The owner personally makes the sushi to order, and during slower times (lunch) he loves to chat with the customers. He was a pleasure, and very open about sharing information about the food. They dont cook with MSG, or salt. They use organic vegetables in their foods, and I believe most of the food is all handmade. He is a very experienced chef, with many years on his resume of making wonderful food. I am not a fan of ginger but the ginger made with the sushi was obviously fresh as I could smell it across the table, and the homemade ginger dressing on the salad was heavenly, so much that i had to stop myself from licking the bowl! The kitchen set up allows you to engage with the chef who is a friendly and engaging woman. The only negative thing I can say is that the soda machine seemed to be broken and my soda was flat. However, it was quickly replaced with lemonade and I was a happy customer. I strongly recommend this place!

The good: Some of the rolls were ok while others were subpar. The bad and ugly: I do not think I'll be returning here. The owner did try to be as accommodating as he could but sort of felt some of the staff was not quite so friendly and took a long time between ordering and delivery. Tried Sweet Heart Roll which seemed saturated in sauce, a-1 roll which also was not quite up to snuff and another roll which the name escapes me which was more of a dessert (had bananas or plantains in it). I was with a group as well and found the shashmi to have been frozen and thawed (it was still frozen to a point) and someone found clear plastic in their dessert. Nothing seemed fresh at all and I didn't feel the greatest later on that evening.

The worst sushi I ever ate. Ordered the seafood soup for two it was loaded with tofu and it had 2 pieces of shrimp and 2 scallops and fake crabmeat for 7.95. The sushi was mostly stale rice and stale seaweed with a small amount of seafood. I ordered take out and when I called and complained about the seafood soup I was told that shrimp is expensive that is why I got only two pieces. Will not order from this place again especially when there are great sushi restaurants within the area. Also the ginger was pink which means food dye. When you open a new restaurant you should wow the clientele not disappoint.

Great place! Sushi was good, very filling. Chicken teriyaki plate was so plentiful, had to take the leftover home. My twelve year old loved the place. Very good service, friendly staff, and the owner was a hoot.

This place was great. Lots of vegan options, fast service, delicious food. Also it's BYOB which is a nice change of pace.

I have read a few bad reviews of this place. I stand strong by my first review. This restaurant has the best sushi I have eaten in Pennsylvania, hands down. When I first moved out here from NY I spend 6 years looking for a sushi spot to call my own. That 6 years of going to countless sushi spots. All paled in comparison to this place. I go there at least once a month, and do take out at least 3 times a month, and go often with my entire family and I have never had any issues what so ever. The food is always fresh and delicious. Now that they now have a Chinese menu I am excited to see how they do!

Sick as a dog thanks to the sushi chef who was coughing all over the food. Visibly sick. ..when I asked him if he was sick he told me yes...very bad cold! 3 days later, my son and are in bed. Makes you question their overall cleanliness.

I'm shocked at all of the five star reviews for this place. I just got back from a pretty bad dinner experience at Plum House. The service was slow and the sashimi was frozen. My party joked that the time in between ordering and receiving food was so long because they needed the fish to thaw - well one of my dining companions bit into a piece of tuna and it was actually frozen. A couple of the special rolls were OK - the A1 Roll (tuna, salmon, yellowtail, and tempura flakes topped with a couple different types of roe) and the Sweet Heart Roll (spicy tuna and tempura flakes topped with tuna). The Volcano Roll (pan fried yellowtail, tuna, salmon, seaweed, smothered in chef spicy sauce) was far too saucy: the roll tasted like slightly spicy mayo - you couldn't taste the fish. Overdone with the sauce. I would definitely recommend people spend a little more at Sogo for much better sushi.

I don't get it - I simply don't understand how there can be so many 5 star ratings of this place. This restaurant is only a 10 minute drive from home for me and I had high hopes and expectations after reading Juan C.'s review. Unfortunately I was very disappointed. There are only a few things that I consider myself worthy of being a critic of, and sushi is one of those things. Some specifics... The selection was very slim, but I should note that the owner (whose name is Sing) did indicate that they have only been open for 2 months and that the selection could be expected to grow over time. All of the following items were not available: Uni, Salmon Eggs, none of the "good" Mackerels (they did have some of the prepackaged standard Mackerel which I will not touch), Quail Eggs, Albacore, Surf or Giant Clam, Ankimo, Toro. The salmon was good, the tuna was good although one fella in my group received some tuna sashimi that was literally still frozen hard. The Tai (aka Mudai, or Red Snapper) had a very good look and texture but the taste was definately not right. Note that if you want to try good Tai in the Lehigh Valley then I recommend Kome where you should try the Mudai and the Kin Mudai. I do want to note that Sing recommended the Kimchi soup if you like "spicy". I did get an order of the Kimchi soup and I will say that if you like spicy then you will like the Kimchi soup. This was the best item that I had at Plum House and it was a very large portion too. Hey Juan C. (and everyone else for that matter) if you read this review and really want to get some top notch sushi then go to Shumi in Sommerville NJ. Make a reservation at Shumi to sit at the sushi bar and put yourself into the hands of Ike the owner and sushi chef - in case you are not aware this style of eating sushi is called "omakase". You will walk away from the Shumi omakase experience with a new benchmark of comparison. Look Plum House isn't terrible, if I lived in walking distance of Plum House I would go there on rare occasion to quench a sushi hankering when I don't feel like driving anywhere.

Loved the tempura shrimp, seafood delight and orange flavored chicken. Nice place and very friendly owner. Place is highly recommended. We'll definitely come back.

My husband and I moved to PA last year and one of the things we had to give up was sushi.... UNTIL we went to Plum House. We have been there several times and each time makes us go back again! My husband always gets the sashimi and loves it. I get maki rolls. We have never been disappointed. And we are used to Brooklyn restaurants! One of the best menu items has to be their teriyaki. I don't like teriyaki but ordered it after I found out that they make their own sauce and only use organic, fresh, and no bottled ingredients. Oh my! It IS fabulous! My new favorite since then is to order the appetizer order of tempura shrimp and the veggie teriyaki. As far as the complaints of the wait and the staff- all is made to order, this is not McDonald's- use the time to talk and enjoy your friends.... While there is a moderate language barrier, we have found the staff to be very willing to help in any way. Remember the Japanese culture is reserved. We plan on enjoying Plum House meals often and wish them success!

My wife an I have eaten there a couple times and have been pleasantly surprised each time. Last visit I had a few a la cart sushi and teriyaki steak. The fish was fresh (white tuna, mackerel and forgot the other), but it was the teriyaki that stole the show. The steak was a quality cut and the sauce was fantastic. I licked the plate clean. The owner came to chat with us and told us the sauce is made from scratch from quality ingredients, no bottles and no shortcuts. For the whiners, we all understand this place in not in the same league as Kome. If you desire toro and giant clam dinner (but no parking), then go to Kome, that place is great and they have a great selection of sake. If you want a quality Japanese dinner walking distance in College Hill, Plum is a good choice.

We just got home after a dinner at Plum House and I had to post my compliments. We weren't fans of the previous 2 restaurants at this location, but we hope this one has some longevity. The food was great and the service was very friendly. And the kimchi soup was a perfect remedy for the cold walk from our house. We'll be back often. Thanks!

Supposedly this place is only a few months old, and I was so excited by the reviews, that ended up being highly disappointing. The service was slow, and I figured out why.... because they have to thaw out the sashimi. We waited an hour after ordering. It was frozen fish, prepackaged raw fish, ugh. They did not have uni, toro, or good hirame. 1 friend, his dish, was still frozen, and another friend found a plastic wrapper in her dessert! It's small, street parking only, and the tea wasn't even hot, just colored green. That must be why they give free sake, to ease the pain on your belly.

I'm sorry to say that this was some of the worst sushi I've had. Thankfully I started with only one order of SpicyTuna. Hardly any fish & pretty tasteless. Service was indifferent at best. Hopefully they'll get their act together as they're in a location that's competitive. I wish them the best.
