We were out shopping in Pottstown and in the mood for Mexican food so we let Yelp point us to Don Julio in Douglassville. I was curious from the mixed reviews what to expect but what we experienced was super-friendly service and large portions of authentic Mexican food. I had the flautas and the wife had her usual chiles rellenos. The little one wanted tacos and when asked flour or corn, she replied corn. The waiter smiled and said most kids prefer flour and he was right - she turned up her nose at the corn tortillas but wolfed down the flour in seconds. Their food reminds me more of the Mexican food you get in the midwest rather than what I refer to as 'East-coast Mexican' but either way, we ate until we were stuffed and brought enough leftovers home for a meal or two. Super cheap too!

We're from Arizona and this place was the best Mexican food in this area. It has the most authentic Sonora taste. Some reviews with negative comments obviously have no idea what authentic is supposed to taste like! One person on their review stated good Mexican food in texas!!!! Yuck! That's not authentic Mexican that is Tex-Mex, FYI...THERE IS A DIFFERENCE! but I wouldn't expect anyone in PA to know the difference! I'm sad that they closed it was again the best-in-class for Mexican food around here. The staff was courteous and helpful! I wish them well on future endeavors, my entire family and I wish they were still open!

Decided to give Don Julio a try for the first time last night and it was really great. My husband and I went late afternoon on Friday for an early dinner. We were actually the only people eating in, which worried me for a minute. All worries went away very quickly as soon as we started our meal. Started with homemade tortilla chips and a green salsa that was very yummy. My husband and I both decided to eat somewhat light and order burritos. The shredded chicken burrito was delicious. It came with a homemade salsa and we ordered guacamole on the side. Both were fresh and delicious. The burritos were a good size. Not huge and stuffed with fillers like we have had a other places. It was just enough food for a lighter meal. Give the Mexican style lemonade a try. Fresh squeezed lemonade on a warm summer night with dinner was perfect. The only very minor thing that could be changed, would be for the restaurant to turn the music down a little. It was pretty loud. We will definitely be returning to Don Julio again soon.

This place is horrible. We just went and picked up take out. After having to wait over 15 minutes for the counter person to wait tables we received our food. We live less than 1 mile away and by the time we got home the food was cold and absolutely tasteless. For the price that you pay you would expect, at least, warm food. The food was so bland that I am about to take it back. Do not go here.

We tried it for the first time the other week. The food was very tasty. Typical strip mall spot, but they decorated it cute. Nice tables. Great fresh salsa. Interesting chips. A bit unusual as they were thick, but not hard. Not my favorite kind of chips, but fine. Fresh and good guacamole. It had too much onion in it for me, but if you like onion in your guacamole, you would probably like it. Waitress mentioned that next time I could ask for some guacamole without onions and they will make me a fresh batch. Very accommodating! My boyfriend and I tried various things since it was the first visit. Great tacos. I liked the enchiladas as well. All the various chicken and beef offered in the dishes were good and had great flavor. I liked the shredded chicken the best. Terrific re-fried beans with more flavor than most. Many choices on the menu. The waitress mentioned that they recently updated the menu. I'm not sure what the old menu was like. Service was very friendly and attentive. Great new place! I will definitely go back soon. Second visit was good as well!

Went back after they had been open awhile and while things have gotten better, I still wasn't impressed. Service has improved. They bring two lovely salsas to the table. Tasteful and spicy. The chips are...gross. Ordered carne asada nachos. Beef was dry and chewy and there was barely any cheese on them. All other ingredients were generous. The bad cap on a mediocre meal was having the server write in "tips cash only" after processing my credit card. Good thing I had change. That would be a great thing to tell folks ahead of time. I do want to add that their lemonade, I assume made fresh, was delicious. Not too sweet and very good.

My wife and i tried this place few months ago out of whim for something different. The experience was so so. It was a chilly evening that day and the restaurant had its door open, making the whole place colder than one would prefer for a sit down dinner. Nacho's were different than any other place. not sure what to make of it, didn't taste bad at all, but something different. Definitely did not seem fresh. We were offered free margaritas and they were excellent. the entres were tasty, but not warm/hot. I'm so used to having mexican food served on a hot plate, I was quite surprised to see that the plates here were pretty cold. Probably making the food cold pretty fast. Another thing that caught out attention was how fast the food came out. Normally, at a sit down restaurant, it takes a good 10-15min for the food to be made and brought out to you sizzling on a hot plate. Our food came out within 5mins or ordering... regardless, This place is definitely worth a try.

The greatest authentic Mexican food in the area, I'm from 40 miles north of Mexico in az and I know what Mexican food should taste like. And Don julio 's is excellent.

I came here not really expecting much because of the location and I was not surprised. I sat down alone in the restaurant and the only waitress many times would rather sit and talk to random people working there or friends who stopped by rather than help me get a refill on my drink or check on my food. Beyond the lacking service was a food that was sub par to the point that I really had difficulty getting it down despite my level of hunger going in, I had a pepper stuffed with cheese, of which the cheese was not even remotely warm or melted but more like a partially warmed hot pocket cheese. The steak that came with the meal was charred, super thin and dryer than a desert. Considering I had ordered one of the more expensive menu items I had higher hopes especially considering some of the Spanish restaurants in Reading area are quite tasty, Don Julio's however was not one of these establishments.

I'm spoiled by living in Richmond, Va. where I think the Mexican, Latin food is as good as it gets in the East. This is pretty good, certainly rather authentic and it's got a nice appearance both outside and inside. Their sauces are good. I thought all the dishes looked terrific. My burrito and sides were fine. I think anyone looking for authentic good Mexican food will be very happy.....it's A-OK....good stuff !

This place just opened last week so we gave it a try. Guacamole & chips were very good. We had chicken flautas and beef burrito. They both were very tasty. Another plus is that it is BYOB. The staff was friendly - a little slow - but they just opened. Only complaint is that they don't provide free chips and salsa. We will return again.

Had the Chorizo Burrito the first time. I asked them to make it spicy; they did and it was good. Nice to have a good local Mexican restaurant.

Heard good things about this place so decided to order take out. Large portion sizes at reasonable prices. Food itself was average and on the bland side. We had two chicken burrito dinners and a chicken enchilada dinner. Menu is very busy and similar to a chinese menu. Been open for business a while now, was told 10-15 minutes when ordering on the phone. We ended up waiting 40 minutes. Was offered 10% off for the wait which was a nice gesture, but we already had a 10% coupon. We were hoping it would knock our socks off, but it was just an average experience.

Ate here a week or so after it opened. Service was horrible but I chalk that up to being new. However, the food was marginal at best. I've had better Mexican food at Taco Hell. I used to travel to Houston, TX a lot so maybe I'm just spoiled from the Mexican food there.

I read the reviews and was apprehensive in going here. I'm glad I went. The place was very clean, the food was excellent. It is definitely authentic Mexican food. Service was good although there were only 2 tables occupied. I will definitely return again.

I went to try this restaurant with the family and the Food was not hot and didn't taste that good , service wasn't good either , they have to supply salsa with the chips and make sure they refill it once it s empty . They have a lot to improve !!! The only good thing was the cake (tres leche) the flan wasn't that good .

Our new favorite restaurant! Food is wonderful authentic Mexican. Generous portions and very reasonably priced. Enjoyed the carne asada burrito, enchiladas de pollo, and the tostadas and each time it is my favorite! The waitstaff is friendly and accommodating. Say hi to Caroline she is the best.

We've been looking for a good Mexican restaurant in the area but weren't having luck. Then we found Don Julio. What a delight! I was pleasantly surprised when we walked in to find an extremely clean and nicely decorated space. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. I found the menu a tad overwhelming, but she was more than happy to help me decide what to get (Tostadas with pulled chicken). My husband and I both enjoyed our meals. He had a burrito. The menu felt authentic to me as did the preparation. The food seemed very fresh. I loved that instead of offering apple juice for my son, they had watermelon and cantaloupe water to offer - much healthier! Another poster commented that they did not provide free chips and salsa but they must have changed that because we did get chips with 2 different dipping sauces. I also felt the price was extremely reasonable. For me, my husband and son we spent less than $30 including tip and all left full (but not stuffed and feeling icky, as I find with a lot of Mexican place). Overall, our experience was great and we'll definitely be back.

Not good at all. I ordered Chicken Chilaquiles without guacamole and without beans, what I got was rolled up tortillas with nothing in them (not just a little chicken, literally just toritillas) covered on sauce. When I said it wasn't right, the waitress told me I ordered chicken enchiladas. No, I didn't but even if I did there is still no chicken inside these. So they took it back, and I got my chilaquiles, but with beans and guacamole all over it. The food once I got what I ordered was good, but the poor service and frustration aren't worth it.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
