House of Good Fortune We have been going to the House of Good Fortune for many years. It is without a doubt the absolute best Chinese food in the area! They suffered a few hick-ups a couple of years ago when the original cook passed away and the owner moved. The younger generation has taken over and revamped the menu. Many more selections! We visit about once a month and always with another couple so we can order a variety. With one couple, three have favorites. BBQ Pork and Crab Puffs to start. Then Sweet and Sour Shrimp, Mongolian Chicken and Prawns with Lobster Sauce. I am the odd one. The Chow Fun special is great and I have ordered it twice. Happy Family is great. So are the Mushroom Beef and BBQ Pork with String Beans. All in all, we have never had a bad meal! Our kids like the Mushu. Other dishes including Good Fortune Special Egg Fooyung(Beef, chicken & shrimp.) and Four Treasures are great. Another couple will drive over an hour just so they can enjoy the great food. Their beer and wine selection is very limited but OK. We are always greeted with a smile and a hug. The service couldn't be better. We tend to arrive about 7:30 and linger. They close at 9 but we often don't leave until 9:30. Never a complaint. All in all, if you want great Chinese, go to the House of Good Fortune in Sherwood.

Can I give them less than one star? We ordered from here tonight and you would think that they couldn't mess up a simple order, but we were wrong. I specifically asked for crab cream cheese wontons, steamed rice and noodles. We get home and there is fried wonton strips in the box. Instead of simply saying this was an honest mistake and we will fix your order, the lady on the phone argued with how the order was placed. We've ordered from here several times and we call the crab cream cheese wontons with no issues. Needless to say, after 10 minutes of arguing, we were told to come pick up a new order. When my best friend goes inside to pick up the order, the manager hands her a menu and says we don't call them crab cream cheese wontons because they are too confusing for person taking the order on the phone. Tell the person (me) who ordered next time to call them crab puffs if they want their order right. I'm a little confused as to how someone confuses the word crab with plain fried wonton strips. If I wanted crab puffs then I would order just that, but I did not. Every place we order from (even my best friend's mother who is Japanese) calls them crab cream cheese wontons because they are crab placed in wonton wrappers. Don't be rude to your customers and next time add more than a teaspoon off mix to the "crab puff".

You know I wanted to rate this place higher but I couldn't find it in my little heart to do it. It has so much potential with it's menu and the staff is incredible. However, it all came down to taste my friends...I decided to try the combination dinner since it offered choice of soup, 4 fried shrimp, 2 wontons, fried rice, noodles and 1 protein for $11.95! Well the portion size was great but my twice cooked pork was drowning in it's sauce. I asked for it extra spicy to get no spice (maybe there was but I was expecting flaming hot that I would regret it in the morning hot). The shrimp was heavily battered that I eventually peeled off the batter to taste the nice fat shrimp hiding underneath the batter. the bland sweet & sour sauce was saved by the hot mustard the owner poured into it. The noodles were equivalent or a tad better than what you expect to get at Panda Express. The fried rice is heavier on the egg side, which I didn't mind. Overall the atmosphere is great, service was incredible but please lay off drowning the main entree in sauce.

My family has been eating here for several years and I can say with good confidence that they are very consistent in the presentation and quality of their food. As others have stated, you can get better Chinese cuisine at other places in the greater PDX area but, given that there aren't a lot of choices out in this section of the burbs it wins. It's a bit American style Chinese (from my experiences with places like Good Taste in downtown PDX) but the flavor is always good. Occasionally the dishes seem a bit on the salty side but they do claim to use no MSG in their food. I can't really speak much to the feel of a sit-down meal here as it has been probably 2 years since I've actually gotten a table but, their to-go service is very prompt and I've never seen a mistake in anything we've gotten as take-out. As an added bonus, the staff are always polite and friendly.

We have been going here for 12 years and it has gone down hill in the last two years since the owner got ill and past away in December 2012. His sister took over it seems she owns the Murray Hill location also and the god there was not as good. Now this one has gone downhill along with the service. The prior owners wife was forced out and the service and food quality show. Will not be back

My favorite Chinese restaurant. I love this place! Great food, good tea and a friendly staff.

The Good: This restaurant has potential to be better than all the other Chinese restaurants in the area. They have a better menu (one without a hamburger) which includes seafood dishes and authentic Chinese soups. The Bad: The fried rice was terrible. It came out yellow - the main ingredient was the yolk and with every bite, all I could taste was egg. Try: the sizzling rice soup. Yum. Don't Try: the fried rice. Or just get it modified.

My husband goes here more than I do. I think it's ok, but it's not first on my list of places I want to eat in Sherwood. If I want Chinese take out - this is where we would get it.

Most things lack flavor at this strip mall Chinese restaurant. We've tried it about 5 times, every time hoping against hope that it's gotten better. Their staff is friendly and service is fairly quick.

I've been coming here occasionally for years, simply because my friends who like it invite me. I have no idea why they keep going back. I had lunch there today, so here's my review combined with today and past experiences. The food is the most bland Chinese food I've ever had anywhere. Even things that are supposed to be spicy have no flavor. Things that are supposed to be sweet are tasteless. The soups are somehow greasy. The fried rice is an unnatural color of yellow and the sticky rice isn't even sticky. The egg rolls are the size of your thumb. The won tons are oily, and the tea isn't even good. Not even the tea! There, I said it. Today was as expected. But also not enough utensils for us, no water refills, the food came out at different times than the rice and sides, and the blonde waitress is basically lifeless. I'm sorry, but 2 stars instead of 1 simply because the place is kept up nice.

My daughter and I went there for lunch yesterday at around 12:30. It wasn't terribly busy so we were seated promptly and water and hot tea were brought to us right away. After that things became terribly slooooooow! It appeared that there was only one waiter (and maybe one cook?) because it took almost half an hour for our food to arrive. I will say that House of Good Fortune has the best Hot and Sour soup of any I've had, and for the most part the food is pretty good. But goodness, something needs to be done about the service!

The best Chinese in the Sherwood/Newberg area. The Kung Pao chicken and the low mein are really good. Much better than anything in Newberg. Not fine dining Chinese but a really good place to take your family for lunch or dinner. Good prices and LARGE portions. The combo plates will feed two people. We always have tons of take-home when we leave here. Enjoy :)

Nice place for lunch, service was prompt and friendly, food came hot/quick and tasted good. Spring roll and fried won-ton that comes with lunch special was a little wimpy departing from expected. I would come back but wouldn't go out of my way. Ordered side of spring rolls and these things showed up about the size of my thumb..... Looks like something you'd get at costco in a frozen bag of 50

Food is good but customer service is not so good. Not very friendly and takes a while to get food.

We live in Sherwood and are so happy to have a Chinese food restaurant so close that is so good. The service is always great too which is nice. Hot and sour soup is delicious and all entrees we've had (General Tso, Lo Mein, Orange Chicken, Broccoli Beef, and Sweet and Sour) are a hit. Their dinner entrees come with rice and wontons too and those are yummy as well. Serve tea for free with any meal too!

Had the pork dumpling soup...it was delicious. Broth had tons of flavor, was fresh and yummy! Would definitely try this place again. A+

We were in the Neighborhood today and stopped by for lunch. I found out it is owned by the same folks who own the one in my Hood (Murrayhill area). The Egg Drop soup is much better than the Murrayhill Location and the Kung Pao was quite delicious, although a bit greasy and there were too few of the dried peppers. The Sweet and Sour Chicken was good, I appreciate the fact they use only white meat in their Sweet and Sour Chicken. Overall It was OK, I would certainly go back, but I would not make a special trip out there. The odd thing was that one entree came out way before the other, does that mean it is fresh made? No idea. It seems clean and the service was top notch.

  • Amanda B.

Cheap enough and food is decent enough. When I'm in the area it's a good place to meetup with friends because no one ever seems disappointed with their entree. Service is a bit slow though. But that just probably depends on the time of day you go.

It seems that finding a good Chinese restaurant in the Portland metro area isn't as easy as you'd think. I wasn't holding out much hope at this place either, but was pleasantly surprised. It is definitely Americanized Chinese food, to be sure, but we thought they did a decent job at most of the dishes we tried. We got our standard 3 dishes that we often use to judge the restaurant: Orange chicken, Dry sauteed string beans, and Mongolian beef. They hit it out of the park with the green beans - they were fresh, still crisp, not too oily, and had a good amount of garlic and ginger (is it ginger? I'm not sure). Even the kiddo loved these. The Mongolian beef was solid, and had good flavor, and wasn't overloaded with green or yellow onions, and the vermicelli was still crispy. We all liked this one - no leftovers! The Orange chicken was the weakest dish, and we wouldn't get this one again. The pieces were far too large to eat without a knife, and you couldn't really taste any orange flavor in the sauce. Thumbs down on this dish. We had to ask for chopsticks (always a sign that Asian folks don't frequent the place), but service was good and really fast. It's definitely not amazing cuisine here, but we found it to be the best Chinese food around here.

Maybe Its because I've been going to this place since I was a teenager, but it seems to be a notch above most Chinese places in the area. Yes it's your typical Americanized Chinese food, but not so heavily laden with grease. My husband loves their general Tsos chicken, I am a fan of their hot and sour soup, chicken chow mein, and Mongolian beef. Have liked everything they've made and their service is always very friendly.

I'm new to this restaurant having only eaten there twice, but I will say they are very friendly and the food, for the most part, is good. The only exception I've found so far is their fried shrimp which was way over cooked and soaked in grease, leaving it heavy and feeling like a lump in my stomach. I won't order it there again. The Kung Pao chicken was fairly good as was their lo mein. I haven't tried anything else.

First off, let me just say I worked through high school as a dishwasher at a Chinese/American restaurant in a small town in Oregon... so of course I like House of Good Fortune. Is it real Chinese food, nope, but is it good Chinese/American food, you bet. My wife and daughters love this place because it is consistently the same and the food is good and priced well. We have never had a bad meal here and continue to enjoy it.

Maybe I just wasn't fortunate the day I went and just had bad luck, but I did not love this place, no matter how many people tell me that it is wonderful. My man didn't like it either, so I know I wasn't just being moody and that it wasn't just my dish. Mediocre food and even worse service. I keep telling myself I'll try it one more time since a lot of people seem to like it, but I haven't been able to bring myself and my wallet back yet. If I do, you all will be the first to know.

This is our favorite Chinese food place. The Sesame Beef is our favorite dish. The house chow main is excellent as well. The owners are warm and welcoming. We live four hours away but always have to eat here each time we visit.

Looks like they may be for sale which is a shame as they are one of the few restaurants that does NOT double as a video poker cesspool! What's next? Massages in the back?

This is the WORST Chinese food we have had so far in Portland. We hoped it would be good based on some of the reviews and because they have been in business for so long. We had orange chicken, Kung Pao Chicken, fried rice, Moo Goo Gai Pan, and sweet and sour chicken. The orange chicken did not come close to tasting like orange chicken (it was in some strange brown sauce). The kung pao was not even a bit spicy. In fact the two dishes had the EXACT same sauce on each. The gai pan was pretty soggy and no flavor. The sweet and sour chicken was at least as we had expected; it had the correct sauce and pineapple. The fried rice was bland and looked like it came out of a rice-a-roni box. We were so embarrassed to have even tried this place, as we took my parents for Father's Day. Never again will we take our family to a restaurant we have never tried.

I was disappointed by the food at House of Good Fortune. Now, if i approached this like any other American Chinese restaurant with flowered wallpaper in a suburban neighborhood, then I would have expected the bland lunch special that was drown in a syrupy sauce with a very mini portion of rice. But no, I had heard from some coworkers that this place was one of the best around... so my expectations were higher. Though the staff were friendly and the restaurant was clean (and busy), I dont think I will come back here.

Excellent Sweet & Sour Chicken...the same with the chow mein w/ the meats. Their special fried rice was the opposite....eggy/yellow with no soy sauce flavor, mushy instead of "fried" Decor was like every strip mall Chinese joint from my childhood.

This restaurant is a local taste of Chinese food, and it's popular with folks living in the area for a conveniently located change of pace and a night out. Objectively, it doesn't favorably compete with Portland's best, but my family and I have been here several times and we've enjoyed our evenings here. We've not encountered poor service, but service is understandably slower when the tables are filled. I'd recommend it to folks living nearby. If your tastes are more demanding and your pockets are deeper, perhaps this isn't your best choice, but you could do considerably worse. I think it's worth your consideration.

This is one of my favorite Chinese restaurants. I love all the soup dishes they have, esp the sizzling rice soup.. The food is always well seasoned and tasty. They do have their own favors unlike most Chinese that we are used to but very good in my opinion. Never had a problem here. The owner and staff is very attentive to your dining experience. I wish all restaurants had a owner like her.

Went here for the first time Monday, it looks like the place is closed from the outside but it was very much open!!! We were greeted by a very sweet women whom I later learned was the owner and our server for the night. The food was hot and fresh, tasty and priced just right. One thing that turns me off about places is a run down building with old decor and uncomfortable seating. House of Good Fortune was completely opposite of this, with a fresh look and light background music. Like others I can't say this is the best Chinese food around but I'll be going back again in the near future.

Since moving to Oregon 12 years ago, I have been looking for at minimum, a satisfactory Chinese food place. This place is way above the satisfactory mark. I always find the service to be fast and friendly. The prices are very reasonable and the drinks don't skimp on the alcohol. I've been for lunch and dinner. The only item on the menu I'm not a huge fan of is the pot stickers. Just a thick wrapping around the meat. Otherwise I enjoy coming to this place and drive from one town over to enjoy it.

Had the dinner combo with Kung Pao Chicken,. Very good value. I always get potstickers from HoGF. This time a few were brought to the table overcooked./slightly burnt a little and two were open with their filling out. They were good enough to eat and I was too hungry to send it back or complain. Kung Pao was great and the sweet and sour soup was very good. Egg roll and the shrimp were not drained enough, pretty oily. Fried rice was a little bland and did little for my meal. Service was good and our empty plates were removed promptly.

We ordered takeout from House of Good Fortune. While the staff was pleasant and we were given exactly what we ordered, the food was sub par. The fried rice and mixed veggie entree were good but the sweet and sour chicken was bland and soggy. The Kung Pao chicken was grisly (I ended up throwing it away). Perhaps there are dishes that this restaurant excels at but I did not have the pleasure of sampling them. We will not be ordering from them again nor would I recommend them to others.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
