I have been meaning to write a review about sandwich Express for some time, but never could find the time to do it. Then it occurred to me, what better time than while sitting in the drive thru. Why? Because it consistently takes forever to get your food at Sandwich Express. The food itself is very good, but the service is definitely lacking. The place seems to be run by teenagers have nothing better to do than socialize instead of making your food. It's too bad that the service doesn't match the quality of the food. Today I spent only 6 minutes waiting in the drive-thru. In the past, I have spent over 20 with no cars in front of me and ordering only one sandwich. Today is a good day. But to be sincere... the wait times are known for being fairly horrendous here. I hope this can be an eye opener for the owners. Great food!

We were shut down by the brewery across the street for having a kid. Odd since the breweries in Portland have train tables and toy boxes and are generally considered a safe bet by local parents, yet in Salem that particular joint is a no-fly zone. So we ended up here for a break from the road. Kind of irritated from the last visit we just rolled through. The wife went in and I stayed in the car with the kiddo. Seemed like it took a while just for a couple sandwiches. Can't comment on the service since I didn't go inside. Ordered the Turkey and Cranberry and the Italian a cup of coffee and a side of potato salad for less than 13 dollars! The sandwiches were quite large and hearty, with generous portions of meat, if that's your thing. The coffee was good, round full bodied brew, no signs of poorly brewed coffee like being overly bitter or acidic from baristas trying to save money by cutting back on grounds. The potato salad was good, had some acidity and a bit of tang. (good in potato salad, bad in coffee). What they don't tell you about your "4-inch" sandwich is that it's 4 inches by 4 inches, so your quaint sandwich isn't that quaint. cool! The turkey portions were generous and moist, while the bread had the consistency of a thick slice of wonder bread slathered with a glorified jelly they called cranberry sauce. Where's the tart bite of cranberry? My wife said, "When you bite into a sandwich, you don't want every ingredient to be soft." The sandwich had no tooth to it. The sweetness of the cranberry sauce overpowers the turkey and you forget you aren't eating a jelly sandwich. The Italian offered allegations of cured meats and pepperoncini. I was driving so I couldn't open the sandwich to check so I'm going based on the hearsay provided. Any sign of salami and pepperoni was very muted and the tang of pepperoncini was non-existent. Upon reviewing the menu, the sandwich did have a type of dressing which I figured some of the oil and vinegar may have run in with the mayonnaise, but now I see this dressing was intentional. Their "Italian dressing" tastes exactly like someone collected the runoff from the bottom of a bowl of coleslaw and poured it over the sandwich. Not an unwelcome accompaniment, but it is when it's advertised as "Italian dressing", which is actually a thing. Again, the dressing is the only thing offering this sandwich any personality whatsoever. This sandwich did at least have the hearts of the lettuce offering a small amount of crunch. Overall, you could make a better sandwich at home with whatever odd fixings you have in your fridge for half the price. In terms of eating out, the price is pretty exceptional if you are feeling particularly desperate, drunk or broke. If you are looking for a cheap place to eat at the cost of time and taste, this is your place. If you're looking for a sandwich place with some integrity, this is not.

I used to love sandwich express, but the last 3 times I've been here they have seemed to become extremely lazy. Sandwiches come on the wrong bread with the wrong toppings. And this last time MOLD on my bread bowl!!! I will never return.

There is nothing express about this place. I was in the drive thru for almost 30 minutes. the prices aren't great, either. I did like the sandwich, but it wasn't worth the price or the wait. I got the garlic steak and cheese on wheat. It was good flavor, warm, and held up well. I can't quite pinpoint what it was about the sandwich that just didn't impress me completely. I won't be back, but I wouldn't say "never eat here" either.

I have never been here before. We had a coupon so decided to give it a whirl. When we first walked in the place was about half full and the other half were pretty much all dirty tables. There was nobody in line and nobody out cleaning. The parking lot is absolutely terrible though. Square and tight parking. Saw a Ambulance come in and he couldn't park in the lot so he went and parked up the road a bit on the street. The food itself was quite good. I got a smoked turkey footlong. I really liked the bread, it's quite wide and was fresh and tasty. The toppings were a bit skimpy compared to like Subway, but the sandwich is so big it would take a lot of toppings to make it look good. Anyway I left full and fairly happy. Anyway, overall I would give it another try sometime. 3/5 because of the terrible parking lot and the dirty tables and soda counter.

Stopped in for a quick sandwich and almost didn't stay. Tables were dirty. Floor wasn't swept. Windows were filthy. The gal that waited on us didn't greet us, just looked at us like she could care less. Obviously not a happy employee. Our 3 year old grandson was really hungry, so we didn't want to try to find another place. Sandwiches were bland. My daughter and I both had a lot of stomach upset the rest of the day and night. Would never stop there again!

I am absolutely surprised at all the negative reviews. Although a agree with the terrible parking, this place has some of the best sub sandwich and fries I have had in Oregon. I first tried this place about a month ago and have been back at least 3 to 4 times a week since. I highly recommend giving this place a try.

Decent place with decent food. Much better than subway for not much more money. They are very busy for lunch which is OK. I only give then three stars because my wife's coffee creamer was expired by two and a half months. I am not sure how that is even possible except by pure neglect and lack of diligence. Makes me wonder about other things. That is a VERY long time for something as simple as creamer. When brought to their attention we asked for non expired creamer which they didn't have so they gave us milk instead. Milk would have been fine the first time, but how nobody noticed this is beyond me. They should be checking dates and making sure expired food products are not reaching customers. Besides that everyone was friendly and everything was good. Nice atmosphere and good place for lunch.

BARF. I feel sick as I write this... and fear that I may lose what little food I was able to consume. Ordered a pepper jack chicken with garlic fries (side of ranch) and a small sprite. Also ordered a garden veggie salad with ranch for boss. Sprite: They were out of syrup. So glad I waited until I got back to the office to find this out. Trashed it. Chicken sandwich: Found what appeared to be a mouse turd in it. Seriously--I don't know what else it could have been. Tossed it. Fries with ranch: Good fries, sour ranch. It was also very lumpy. My ranch didn't match the ranch of my boss--who said his was just fine. But he tasted mine and agreed it was sour. Fucking lame.

5 stars? really for Sandwich Express? Yes, been coming about twice a month now, and they've really turned things around. They literally have THE BEST veggie salad in town. Hand's down. And it's quite big, for only $6.99. A steal! And when i'm hankering for a good veggie sand, I order their Gardenburger. Again, quite good! Service is usually now more proficient, and not as slow as it used to be.

Best place for a Caesar salad. I love them. Good price lots of food. Their bread is good. Slow service. Sometimes I wait twenty minutes or more for a salad. But worth the wait.

In a world where Subway reigns supreme, this sandwich option almost deserves all 4 stars I gave it. Subway has conditioned the masses that a $5 footlong is the standard. The footlong here is an entirely different ball game! It's huge!! Ok, negatives. Service isn't terrible. It's non-existent. I always feel like I'm putting the cashier out by bothering her. The sandwich delivery consists of tossing a basket on your table and walking away. No greeting when you walk in, no "thank you" on the way out. If the sandwiches weren't great, I'd avoid this place entirely. The sandwiches. Great. Lots of options, tasty, fresh bread. The sandwiches are very wide and they put a good amount of meat and veggies on there. I can barely handle the footlong anymore! To wrap back, if Subway is your sandwich expectation, keep driving. If you're into a good sandwich and don't want any attention from anyone...this is your place!!

Sandwhich Express is playing a trick on you. Yes, they serve sandwiches, but there's nothing express about the service. The service at Sandwhich Express is so slow, it makes you wonder what you waited in line for. Waiting in line is what you're supposed to do at fast food restaurants, but at Sandwhich Express, you'll be sitting at your booth long enough to forget that wait staff didn't take your order, and you also had to wait in line just to order. Try not to count the number of times the model train makes a full circuit around the building while you wait. At around 10 circuits, you may start feeling forgotten or just depressed. After you get your food, though, things rapidly improve from sub-par to par. The sandwhiches are only slightly overpriced for what you get, and the quality of food is comparable to or slightly better than other non-fastfood restaurants that serve sandwhiches. Their beer battered fries are much acclaimed, and are probably in the top third of deep-fried fries you can get anywhere. Perhaps the most enjoyable part of Sandwhich Express is the impressive mural which stretches around the inside wall of the building, featuring many historical Oregon buildings. They have a newspaper clipping on the wall that you can read while you wait to order. You'll have time to read it several times over. For those of you wanting a more convenient option, Sandwhich Express offers a drive through. The drive through may be the fastest way to get your food. I went from entering the drive through to exiting with my food in just over 12 minutes. Getting to enjoy Science Friday on NPR was much better than watching a toy train circle around my head. To sum up Sandwhich Express. Lackluster Service. OK Food.

I'm not surprised at the complaints about the service or lack thereof, but I am surprised people are not digging the sandwiches here. Went in on a weekend afternoon and there was nobody inside. No customers, no employees at the counter. Eventually someone came up front and we placed out orders. My friend went with the 4" and I went with the 6". Turns out I could have gone with the 4" also because the sandwiches are really wide so they're a lot bigger than a typical 6". I thought the sandwich was excellent. Went with the fries as well and they were solid. Service was definitely slow for a sandwich shop, especially considering we were the only ones in there. Places like Jersey Mike's slice the meat and cheese after you order and still get your sandwich to you very quickly. I love the irony of this place having "express" in their name...it's like if McDonald's changed their name to "Healthy Meal". The prices are pretty high as well, but it was a good sandwich and in the end that's the most important thing.

My six inch sandwich was huge because the width is like three inches! I got the garlic zest Philly. Green peppers very fresh, lots of cheese, a pronounced garlic flavor. The price is a pretty spendy almost doubling Subway. The big drawback was that it took a long time to get our food. And there isn't anyone here so i don't know why. Definitely not for people with. 30 min lunch. I don't even want to imagine what it'd be like during the lunch rush. A business like this can thrive or fail and I'm afraid they may be leaning toward the latter if they keep this up.

Surprised by the negative reviews. I have never had poor service here. The sandwiches are great. Soft bread, the 6" is about as filling as a 12" at Subway. The heated cheese steak sandwiches are fantastic, the zesty garlic sauce is great as well. I also like their beer battered fries, and their soups. Much better than Quiznos or Subway in terms of selection, quality of bread, and portions. It isn't as fast as the cold garbage from Subway- but it's worth the wait!

So this was the third time I've been here. I was just going to go the Carl's Jr. that's on the other side of the road, but their little sign changed my mind. 6" Cheese steak, fries, and a drink for six bucks. I figured I'd give it a third try. The first try was near the store opening and I remember they screwed up our order. In compensation, they gave us two free subs. I was so unimpressed with the food at the time, though, that I gave those subs to someone else. No word on their thoughts. The second time was on a quick lunch break from work. I went through the drive-thru and can agree with the other reviewers; the drive-thru time was rather long. My biggest complaint with that trip though was that they didn't really list the ingredients very well, and so my sandwich was covered with an incredibly creamy sauce that rendered the whole thing inedible. I'm not a "sauce guy" in the first place, and usually order it dry, which I would have if I had known, but I even tried to eat this, since I was in a rush. I threw the whole thing away, it was just horrible. So now, two years later, I figured I'd give it another go. I tried the cheese steak, without the sauce and the garlic-fries. The woman taking my order couldn't have been less interested and was not very forthcoming with anything, but I didn't really expect much out of her. That's more of an aside than anything else. When the food finally came, I was...not dismayed, but just uninterested. The fries, first off. They were crisp and hot, but if there was garlic anywhere near them, I didn't taste it. They were a little over-done, but appear to have been made fresh. The sandwich though...well. If that was a cheese steak, I don't know what the heck I was eating in Philadelphia. The meat was a tasteless meat that I believe was roast-beef. It was warm, but not hot, and I've literally had better at Arby's and Subway. It wasn't bad, it was just bland. The onions and green peppers on it were fresh and they were plentiful, but I took most of them off as they seemed to be ends and rind. The cheese was there, but it was oddly tasteless as well. Overall, I ate about half of the six inch, most of the fries, and had a few sodas. I threw the rest away when I realized I was just eating because it was there, not because it was any good or that I wanted it. I gave it three tries. I will not give them another. They aren't horrible, but when there are many other finer choices, I am not about to waste my money here.

The few times I have been here, I have never seen it extremely busy. I think at best there as been two people working. I personally haven't had the long wait times others have experienced. However, the quality of the sandwhiches I have eaten is very high. Love the fresh bread and ingredients. I like the Honeywheat, so that is the bread of choice I have had each time I've been here. In my trying to eat 'better', I'm glad this shop is close by so I avoid the typical burger places, like the one across the street. **Updated review to correct the 'wi-fi' option that is available here

I like the Mac and Newberg stores but this location stinks. No one ever seems to work out front. There is no bell either. I guess they think its ok to just have customers stand out front waiting while we can hear them laughing and playing around in the back. This is a common occurrence here. The food here stinks as well. The other locations have great sandwhiches. For some reason the Salem store gets stale bread that is way too dry that the sandwhich is painful to eat. There is huge inconsistency in the quality of sandwich here as well ranging from crappy to tolerable. Owners, please fix this location or close it so you don't ruin your reputation more than this location already has. I will not be going to the Salem location ever again. Yuck!

Ick. A friend and I went here and ordered two veggie sandwiches. The iceberg lettuce, not-ripe tomatoes and other assorted gross and not fresh vegetables were unappetizing, to say the least. The bread was rubbery. To top it all off, the lady who brought us our food was sneezing and coughing and wiping it all on her shirt. We accidentally left the sandwiches on top of the car after stopping at a rest stop (we left our dogs in the car and didn't want them to eat the sandwiches). Oh. Gee. Darn. I will not be back.

We chose Sandwich Express to support a local business and to fill our bellies on the road. The parking lot and store were empty on a Friday evening. Upon arrival it appeared as if the restaurant was ready for closing because a large section of the dining room's chairs were up and closed signs were placed on the tables; even their signature toy train was turned off. We checked the business hours twice; they were open, but it appeared as if they were closed. If the dining area were fully open, we could see how the restaurant space would be welcoming to eat in. Sandwich Express eerily reminded us of Beaverton Sub Station ( yelp.com/biz/beaverton-s… ). Sandwiches range from nearly $5.00 up to $12.00. They serve cold and warm sandwiches. The warm sandwiches are heated on a panini press but served without the obligatory panini marks. Thanks for squishing my sandwich, but I know how to do that myself. Why take the effort to use a panini press and not develop the grill marks, when there's other equipment on the market that will heat a sandwich without the grill marks? The sandwich meats were nothing to rave about and it's doubtful that their "baked chicken" is prepared in house. They serve previously frozen french fries; nothing special. Their bread reminded us of Subway Sandwich, but without the overwhelming smell that permeates from the restaurant. We've had better service and better quality food at better local sandwich shops for less. Turns out, Sandwich Express is like Beaverton Sub Station, but modern, more expensive and less satisfying.

This is the dirtiest restaurant in Salem, the tables are sticky and dirty. The plates they use are sticky the floor is dirty and also sticky. The service is slow and the workers are very unfriendly. Sandwiches are good but over priced.
