On our way east to sisters after getting up at 5 am I was ready for a little cheat on my diet. We pulled off the freeway to see what there was to see. Checking reviews I saw a place I had gone to years ago called the sassy onion..however not being familiar with the town and my location I couldn't figure out which way I needed to go. We just happened to be in the parking lot of Rock-N-Rogers.My mother said "this place is packed..how about this place, check the reviews" despite the dismal reviews the place had the right look for a road side jem. We ventured in. The place was indeed packed, but then again applebees is packed every night, so i had to see. We were seated in the back in a comfy booth, apparently the floors are sticky, eh their old, maybe dirty..i'm not eating off the floor. The menu is large with a good diner variety. my mom and i have been on this raw food vegan diet, so meat was our mistress we were going to cheat with today. The server was friendly and recommended the eggs bennedict which i always waffle on if i don't know the place, and she very graciously said they could make my mom a burger. She also said you gotta get the stuffed hashbrowns. oooooo myyyyyyyy gaaawd. i'm about to have a food stroke, i'm totally drooling thinking about it. it's worth getting it once for sure. yes, the food didn't come out in 5 min..i don't want instant food. cause instant food means microwaves or a giant piles of food that sits out. and something as delicate as bennedict needs to be freshy fresh. That was a great benny, i would have liked a little bit more lemon, but it was a well executed benny and the hashbrowns were like a loaded potato. it was delicious. The burger..oh my..hand formed delicious, completely hard to eat and just what we wanted. The bill wasn't hefty and we totes got into a food stupor coma.

I really wanted to rank this place higher. Real home made milkshakes, the 1950's environment is great, Burger & Fries the good old fashioned way. I love places like this. However, be sure to know that the age and lack of maintenance and care has given it a run down feel and smell. It really needs some TLC by the owners. I guess I should add one more star to make it a Four because the of their people being friendly......nope I just can't do it. It is ordinary and not better than average so I'll leave the ranking at a Three Start.

On our long drive back to Sacto from Portland, we wanted to get outta the big city before rush hour, so we nixed the plan to eat something really good in Portland in favor of getting on the road a little ways before braking for breakfast. I've had the burgers and shakes at the other Rock-N-Rogers location and remembered that experience fondly, so after we cruised past this more freeway-friendly location, we pulled in. Service was appreciably earnest, but it was wayyyy sloooowww! We tipped big anyway, but the kid who waited on us really seemed to struggle with memorizing the canned/scripted pitches, such as reciting what types of toast they had. He was incredibly nervous. Poor guy! I hope he's acclimating. I got the corned beef hash with eggs. The serving size was just right for me. A two-egg breakfast would be just enough to fill me up, but not too much to put me to sleep for the next eight hours of driving home to Sacramento. But, would the corned beef hash not sit well in the tummy? I guess it was benign enough, but it looked rather unlike any corned beef hash I've ever seen. It was burnt around the edges and tasted burnt. It was a one-star breakfast, and the slowness of the service knocked us off-pace to make it home on time for a planned engagement.

We had a great breakfast here.Big portions and terrific service.I checked Yelp before we ate and I was a little hesitant because the reviews weren't great-So I really want to throw my 2 cents in-TOTALLY would come here again...We brought our girls 15 & 7 and they loved the decor...It was such a great meal I hope others give it a try and see for themselves!

Service was great, no issue there. It is decorated in nostalgia 50s decor. The place is dirty and old. It took almost an hour get our food which is just basic diner eats. My biggest issue is the racist "nostalgic" "art" they have hanging near the ceiling, visible to only a few booths. Obviously based on how obscured it is placed, they know on some level it is offensive ... This makes it even more offensive to me that they knowingly still made the choice to display it. It is totally offensive and unacceptable in this day and age. It made my family very uncomfortable and it is the sole reason for the one star. We won't be back.

Been going here for years. They have the best shakes and great burgers. Servings are large so usually share a meal. Love them.

We go here occasionally and the food is ok, decor is 50's oriented but the place needs a good deep cleaning. Their loaded baked potato and burgers are the only thing we order. The fries however are always soggy and almost cold. It's better than Denny's I still have never ever figured out why his burgers win best in town ?

YUM! I'm in town visiting family and staying about a block away at the Red Lion. I was looking for something light and tasty, also a quick walk from the hotel. Soooo glad I found this place! Service was super friendly. They offered me water while I waited for my to-go order, I declined. I ordered the fish n chips. I putted around while I waited, they have a fun collection of memorability, appropriate for a 50's style drive-in. I was extremely impressed that my food came out in less than 10 minutes and did NOT taste like "fast food". Had fun while I waited too. The fish was amazing, just the right amount of breading, the chips were crinkle-cut fries, also very fresh. There were a couple of options for the chips, the "breaded" ones were noted as a favorite, but I like thicker fries. It also came with some VERY good coleslaw that had a little bit of horseradish (I think) spice, not too much, but the perfect amount. My to-go bag was perfectly equipped with ketchup, tartar sauce, salt, napkins, lemon slices, and a fork. I absolutely will be back - probably, tomorrow! I have zero complaints.

Two strikes your out! Worst food around. Tried two different location, both are a waste of money and very disappointing. Not only the food was bad, but they charge you for everything. Extra mayo. $.50. Cheese.$.69. Onion rings (four of them) instead of fries. $2.99. A total of $24 for two bugers. What a rip off. Waitress was nice but did not tell us about extra charges. Never been charged for added mayo or cheese anywhere else we eaten. Very surprised they didn't charge us for the glass of water we had! Wish I could have given them minus five stars! Save your money and eat else where. They suck!

  • Kathy S.

The waiter was wonderful. The eggs were good, the bacon delicious. The pancakes looked like they came out of a magazine. But that is it pretty to look at, however I believe they were remade and reheated, they were so tuff you could hardly cut them with your fork. Taste was greasy, my dogs could play Frisbee for days with them.

When we lived in Salem, we visited this diner quite often. But since moving to Hillsboro, it is a hit'n miss for when we can make it to this restaurant while travelling through Salem. This Sunday we stopped by on our way home from Bend. This was a much anticipated visit, but afterwards we had regrets. I don't remember the restaraunt ever being so hot. There wasn't any air conditioning and nothing to block the sun (like curtains). There were fans, but not pointed at the booth, so there wasn't any relief from the heat. It wasn't easy to eat under those circumstances. When we left, our car that was sitting in direct sunlight was actually cooler than the diner. Another observation: Right after our dinner was brought to us, I saw the girl that served us, go out the front door to a blue/silver van. She picked up a toddler that was naked and walked around holding him and smoking a cigarette. She was out there for about 20 minutes, and for most of the time she had her hand on this kid's naked bottom. My wife and I lost our apetite's and could not finish our meal. Our kids had their backs to the window, so they didn't see what we did. To be fair, I'm hopeful that this girl washed her hands before serving anymore food, but I can't be certain. Her display, even though that she was probably on her own time, should not have been in view of other customers. This experience has shown how this restaraunt does not have the same character that it had when we frequented it before we moved.

Horrible service!! Dirty place. My fiance and I like to travle and we like to try new places to eat .. we had eatin at both Elmer's and the Sassy Onion, two great places for breakfast or lunch, and figuring we were two for two on great places we thought we would try rock n rogers... looked nostalgic, and like a dinner worth trying. We were wrong. place was empty, but we just figured it was 2pm and we'd just missed the lunch rush. The staff, all three of them, standing idle except for the hostess in grossed In a phone call just starred at us near the wait to be seated sign... we waited for a few long uncomfortable moments as they all came out and took turns looking at us, and then returning to doing nothing without so much as a hello or she'll be right with you or one moment please.. we left never having never tried the food.

The car outside drew us in! I ordered the halibut burger, one of the specials of the day. It was good even though I was skeptical that it was really halibut. One of the complaints about the place that I read about in Yelp was the dirty floor. Indeed, it wasn't perfectly clean, but it wasn't grimy dirty, either. The inside decor of the restaurant could use a little improvement. It looks as if the stuff on the wall had really been there since the 1950's. Our server, Alessia, was a sweet girl who worked the afternoon shift. She was very helpful, especially when my wife ordered the avocado burger and it didn't have any avocado in it. She responded immediately with a plateful of sliced avocado. If I were a local, I'd go back. One of the customers today was actually a regular, judging by the way he and Alessia were talking.

Terrible servers and the service is way too slow. The guy serving simple shouldn't be in a service oriented job he doesn't have a good temperament for it. Overall bad experience.

On the recommendation of coworkers, I gave Rock-N-Rogers a shot yesterday. I ordered the bacon cheeseburger with battered specialty fries. Little did I know I would be getting a burger the size of my head. The burger was stuffed full of lettuce, onions, tomatoes, and special sauce. Unfortunately, for all it's goodies and steaming hotness, it seriously lacked flavor (the bacon did not even make up for this complete lack!). Burger Basket has more flavorful burgers. The battered fries were really good, and that helped save the meal. They had come right out of the frier and were practically bubbling still. Dipped in a little ketchup, there were delicious. They only have one size of soda, 20 oz, and it comes in a Styrofoam cup. I can never drink more than about 10 oz of soda, so this really wasn't a problem for me. Though I am a fan of Pepsi, and was sad to hear they only serve Coke products. About an hour after eating as much of the meal as I could, my stomach told me I should have eaten less, but this is no ones fault save my own. Can't say if I'd be back or not, I really like burgers with flavor....

We were rescuing a new "hot" dog from a shelter in Salem, to add to our family, so Mrs. Burgerdogboy suggested I "rescue" a burger on the way home to add to my waistline. Point taken, mission accomplished. I'd been to Rock N Rogers once before, and for this old guy, RNR fits the bill for old timey diner. I went with the "International" burger, so named because it is two type of cheeses, cheddar and the "international" Swiss. I opted to upgrade the side to an order of O-Rings. You'll read in other reviews that service can be a little pokey and the prices are a little spendy. Right on both cases, but neither drawback contributed to my enjoyment of the hand-made patty cooked and dressed to my order, as well as the over-sized crispy rings. A new dog, and a great burger. A fine day all around.

This is the most disgusting of the two remaining locations in Salem. The floor is so greasy and filthy that you'll slip while walking on it. My man and I were daring eachother to lick the floor for $50. I came pretty close, but considering just how filty it was, I knew I'd catch something. Anyway, the last time (over a year ago) that we ate here, we both ordered the crispy chicken salads (we're lovers of salads with chicken strips). Unfortunately, we were privy to the "chef" asking the waitress how to make them. Seriously. How hard is it? Well, pretty hard apparently because he left off the shredded cheese. Yeah. You will leave this place smelling like old grease, just so you know.

Small location, even compared to their smaller South Salem one. But I like their food. Inside this place, it always seems dirty, probably 'cause the decor is mostly a white canvas. Service is generally good. Great baked potatoes! Worth a trip.

Going in the wrong direction! A restaurant with so much potential and tradition, but I haven't seen that the current owners either appreciate that or care. I have been eating at Rock N Rogers for 20+ years, its sad to see that the service has really gone down hill. The food, is still really good, assuming your order gets taken before you decide to leave or that the order is right once you get it. Service just doesn't seem to be a priority. The restaurants are showing their age. They are supposed to look like a 50's diner, not be worn out like it all exists from the 50's. You can re-upholster the furniture and still have the look of the 50's, it will just look fresher and more inviting. The Hwy 22 location seems to be the flagship location, but even its stuck with its 70's decor, imitating a 50's diner I truly love the food at Rock N Rogers. I love the idea of the 50's Diner. The current owners need to take it more seriously and make Rock N Rogers "The Place to go", make it the tradition it once was. Don't just take our money, reinvest it back in the locations, make the locations look like you went back in time, not like its just old and worn out. Definitely improve the service, go back to the employees wearing the clothes of the time and paper hats. I really hope this local icon can change the direction its going and be a place I want to take my grand kids to experience. I am afraid if the don't, this local icon will be gone forever.

Visited this place for lunch yesterday with my roommate and I'll give it at least one more try. The decor is outdated but in a kitchy way a 50's diner should be. There are some cool signs on the wall with the original prices for the 1957 Bel Air, and old newspapers underneath the glass on the tables. I like it, but it certainly doesn't scream "fine dining." The service was good and our food came promptly. The milk shakes are big enough to split between two people-we split the strawberry and it was amazing. I ordered the battered specialty fries and they were delish-I had them add cajun seasoning for extra flavor. My roommate had the onion rings on the side and they were tasty but enormous. They are heavily battered and pretty hearty to eat with a burger, but they are huge slices (you get 4 big ones) so they are hard to share. Make sure to ask for mayo and mustard etc. because otherwise your burger will come naked. Ranch was an extra .50 and we left there spending $38 between the two of us for 2 burgers and a shake. It is spendy, but really my main complaint is that my burger was flavorless and way overcooked. She didn't ask how we wanted our burgers cooked when she took our order-I should have seen this as a warning sign. It wasn't inedible, but it was chewy. The other half of the burger is still sitting in my fridge and I'm not excited about eating it because of how well done it was. Maybe it was an off day for the cook- I will give this place one more go before I jump ship completely, but at this point an All-the-Way Five Guys works for me.

At Rock-N-Rogers, its the 1950s all over again with the checkered decor, the oldies jukebox, and even the convertible mounted on the poll in the front of the place. Burgers here have always been large and scrumptious keeping tradition with what has been a staple in Salem for many years. Prices unfortunately are still in the 2000s decade, to which may bother some folks as the burgers are well over $10 each platter. The milk shakes have to be one of their best assets as its made with whole ice cream and plenty of milk. Service has dimmed down to high school standard apathetic teens who pour coffee with little to no eye contact. Recommended for all visitors to get a piece of Salem's history.

Great 50's decor, large portions and good food. For me the milk shake and burger combo is the way to go. Long time Salem area burger joint. Everyone knows about Rock-N-Rogers, can be busy at lunch time.
