Been in Salem for a couple of years now, and began to check all places regardless of the reviews. Many of my coworkers had talk really well of this place so it was time to check it out. I have to say they are generous with the serving size and the place has a great atmosphere. The food has a TexMex flavor and reminds me of the Torito's Restaurant chain. I order a "Molcajete", and my wife a "Carne Asada Margarita". To drink a diet coke and Horchata. I did not like the Horchata, it had a good flavor but too water down. The food was excellent with lots of flavor. The carne asada was better then most place in town, and the Molcajete remind me of jambalaya. Great place to relax and hang out with people.

I am giving them a five star mainly to off set the people with no taste in Salem. It is honestly probably a 4 star and easily the best Mexican food in Oregon. Certainly the best in the Salem. The service was quick, attentive, pleasant and no empty drinks. The food was flavorful the carnitas a la margarita the steak was cooked to perfection the corn tortillas were tender and completely delicious best guacamole I have had other than my own. We are from San Diego and accustomed to fine Mexican food to include street tacos from Tijuana and have an understanding what good traditional Mexican food consists of( for all of you who actually have a palette, not those of you that think Olive Garden is delicious). The Jiberito is also delicious the pork was moist, the plantains exquisite and the Orange salsa was to die for. PS the chips and salsa had us convinced we came to the right place before the dining experience even started.

I'm updating our review to reflect our ongoing appreciation for the food at La Margarita. Roger and I feel it is the best Mexican food in Oregon! We have our personal favorites--mine is Enchilada Suiza. The chips are fresh and delicious. Servers are attentive, the prices are reasonable. They have classes available if you wish to learn their techniques. My last review noted that the restaurant had become noisy, with loud parties taking over the restaurant. Because we love the food so much, we have gotten around that by choosing our arrival time carefully--early dinners work for us--and we now ask to be seated in the back side area which seems not to have larger tables. My only current complaint is the water--sometimes I skip the margarita and have only water. I think they rely on Salem water which has a terrible taste, apparently it is unfiltered. They could either filter the water or make bottled water available for purchase. Oh, and the hot tea--it comes with a breathtakingly high price--$3.50 for tea bag hot tea if I remember correctly. Have an extra Margarita instead! M

This place is one of our family favorites if we are in Salem. I like to go there often. Their pollo ala crema is the best in the valley. There tortilla are amazing. Parking and all the goofy streest around it can make getting there a challenge but it is so worth it!

I fear for you, Mexican restaurant. How did you get so far from your authentic roots? Like too many of us, you have lost your cultural flavor and zest in a sea of American monocultural blandness. Reconnect! Find yourself again and rejoice in your beautiful and delicious heritage!

The food here is amazing.. Best Mexican food in Salem hands down.. The service is stellar and the Cadillac margaritas are strong. One of my favorite places.

I visit Salem quite often. This time my wife accompanied me and I took her to the best restaurant in town. The chef at La Margarita is inventive and always prepare outstanding dishes. Not your usual run of the mill Mexican-American fare. The service begins with warm, crisp tacos and cabbage salsa. True to its name, the Margarita was outstanding. My favorite dish is "El Jibarito", a slow roasted pork carnitas between two crisp fried plantains and topped with an orange pico de gallo salsa and Mexican cream cheese. Absolutely perfectly moist, tender and flavorful pork complemented by the crispness of the plantains. My wife chose the "Combo Mismaloya", two enchiladas, one shrimp and one fish, with Mexican style cream sauce. The seafood had outstanding mesquite flavor and both the shrimp and fish filet were moist and tender. This is one of the few Mexican restaurants where the chef knows how to cook fish. We both ordered black beans which were flavorful and perfectly cooked. They make their own tortillas but who has enough room after such large dishes. The next time you're in Salem, dine at La Margarita.

Came here for lunch and was put in the back of the restaurant. Well they of course forgot about us and when they eventually did come and take our order....they still forgot about us. The chips and salsa was very average. Small bowls of salsa that wasn't very good. Guacamole was actually pretty good. I got the Suiza Enchiladas and they were good. I would go back, but would like better service.

This place has recently revamped their menu and this was our first time trying some new items. I had the fish tacos and I was blown away by how good they were. Really just good food all around. The wait staff was excellent and if I was a richer person I would have tipped more (Sorry wait staff! I'm not rolling in it unfortunately). We got our food quickly and they made sure we always had enough chips and salsa in the meantime. The only draw back is how expensive the food, and especially the alcohol are. I really liked it and it is probably my husbands favorite place to go when we have out date nights.

Delicious! The Enchiladas are to die for! Cute intimate hole in the wall. Great wait staff, and the location is wonderful too!

I had the steak Enchiladas for lunch today. For the most part I found them pretty bland, some salt and hot sauce did help out with the flavor though. This seemed like a typical Mexican restaurant to me (not necessarily a bad thing). Down to the fact that you pay at a cash register by the entrance (not complaining but why is this the case at every Mexican place I've been to?). The prices were fair, and the staff was friendly. Serving size was around what I expected. One major benefit is that their salsa that comes with the chips actually has some kick to it, unlike many other places.

Well the food is pretty good, overpriced but pretty good. Here's where it gets bad the service is terrible!! Like the worst service I've had in.... 6 months. One of the people I went with hated her food and didn't even eat it. Our waitress never checked back. A friend order the glass of wine and it didn't come until dinner did...really??? The poor service will make me not want to go back. I dont want to pay that much money for bad service! :-( maybe I can try the express... the service can't get any worse.

My bf and I LOVE La Margarita (and La Margarita Express!). They have excellent, friendly service and their food is always great. We have been here around 5-6 times and every time has been wonderful. I love their suiza combination, the verde burrito, and their fajitas. They have great prices for the quality of their food and are an authentic Mexican restaurant. We highly recommend La Margarita!

Without sounding like Rachel Ray (who I desperately hate), YUM-OH! Having read all the Yelp reviews prior to dining here, I was a tad intimidated. Being a person who loves "Mexican" food smothered with sour cream, cheese, and Cholula, I was certain that I would encounter a "soup nazi" like situation. Never to be afraid to eat, my brother and I attempted the (seemingly) impossible today. We entered the establishment just 30 minutes prior to closing for lunch and were immediately seated and greeted. We received a menu for specials and a regular lunch menu. We oo'd and aah'd over the choices and we settled on the following: enchiladas suiza (me), enchiladas verde, and we split a mushroom and cheese quesadilla. The salsas provided prior to the entrees were nothing to write home about, but the chips were hot and fresh. The glasses of water were not run-of-the-mill Sysco, but instead had a delightful modern feel. The quesadilla arrived promptly and it tasted just how I had expected it: like sauteed mushrooms and cheddar. I would have loved a fantastic salsa to dip it in (or Cholula), but nothing came with it. The enchildadas ROCKED, though. My brothers verde was a delight, with obviously grill cooked chicken (as opposed to the mysteriously shredded stuff found elsewhere) basted with sauce crammed into a soft corn tortilla and smothered with tomatillo sauce. Mine were just as terrific, minus the additional sauce basting of the bird before being crammed. The suiza? Out of this world! I took a chance and requested Cholula and was told they have Tapatio. Just as fine, but the server never brought it. Considering it was nearing closing time, I'm sure she forgot. No bother, as I tossed some chip salsa on the things and they were still great. The beans were better than most other restaurants--normally I order entrees sans the sides, but this time I actually ate the beans. The rice was that same orange flavorless kind--what makes it orange, exactly??? I'm eager to return for dinner. Too bad tomorrow is Thanksgiving!

Stopped in a half hour before closing time after finding a good recommendation on Yelp. Prompt and attentive service. The selection of Tequila was great as were the margs... Chips and sala were bottomless as were our appetities that night. Main course was excellent...chicken enchiladas in cream sauce, chile rellano and beef enchiladas...perfect. Typical Mexican atmosphere, plenty of room, good downtown location, plenty of parking on the street... I wouldn't hesitate to repeat.

Food was okay. Service was horrible. We waited forever for our food, and our check, and for them to get our money. They never refilled our drinks.

I've been eating here about once a month for the past 24 years, and don't plan on ever stopping. I think this is the best Mexican restaurant in all of Oregon. The wait staff, cooks, owner, are all fantastic. My favorite dishes: Enchilada Combination Tequila Shrimp Halibut with fruit I was very surprised several years ago when I had Tequila Shrimp the first time. A I was paying my bill, I asked Pedro (the owner) if he ever shared his recipes. I expected him to chuckle and say "no", but instead, he called the cook over, and told him to tell me how to fix it. I still order it's frequently (even when it doesn't show up on the menu), but I also sometimes fix it at home. I strongly recommend La Margarita to anyone wanting a very nice Mexican dinner. The food reminds me of what we got vacationing in Puerto Vallarta several years ago.

My husband and I randomly stopped here on a drive from Portland to Corvallis. What a great little find. We went for lunch so it was not super crowded but we could tell that it looked like a fun place at night. We sat close to the tequila bar and the server was making fresh juices for what I assumed were the house made margaritas. I didn't get one but should have! I had the shredded chicken salad and the meat was sooo tasty. The portion was a perfect size for lunch and the price was amazing! I was so happy that we stopped here as oppose to a fast food chain because we would have probably spent twice as much at one of those places. I hope we can go back the next time we are in Corvallis for dinner.

This review is mostly about the poor setvice we experienced when we had dinner here on Thursday night . There were four of us and we were sat in the smaller back section of the restaurant where we're almost completely forgotten. After being seated we were brought a small basket of chips that were mostly little pieces. We weren't ready to order drinks just yet, so the wait staff said she would come back. She did come back, 15 minutes later! When she returned with our drinks, we had to ask for water. We asked for additional chips and this time we got a bigger and fresher bowl. Our order was taken and we explained the order split. I was surprised when our meals arrived in "shifts" rather than all at once. It took a full five minutes for our complete meals to arrive. And then they weren't correct. The food was delicious and was not a disappointment. When our bill arrived it was one bill even though we had explained our split, AND, we were charged for the more expensive meals that we didn't order. I will go back again, maybe the wait staff was new, maybe they were having a bad day, none of the staff looked happy or friendly that night, in fact I can't recall seeing a single smile from any of the employees. Come on La Margarita, I know you can do better.

We were grabbing a bite to eat before going to a movie so didn't have a lot of time. We were the only customers and it took a while for the waitress to return to take our order. Only a bite or two into his dish, my husband got a bite that had a paper substance in it. After digging through the shredded chicken he was able to pull out almost a whole piece of paper towel. Although my food tasted pretty good, the thought of what might have been on that paper towel disgusted me that I couldn't eat my dinner. We were comped his food and charged for my mostly uneaten dish. (Only had water to drink).

The food here is nothing short of amazing. Especially the Jibarito, which I notice there is no picture which I shall remedy. I used to live in Salem and came every Sunday evening. I moved north but I still come whenever possible. The staff is friendly, fast and attentive. I come here for any occasion. Large groups or small family dinners. Five stars. All the time every time.

  • Tracy D.

The food here was blah. I was looking for a great authentic mexican food restaurant, and found a messy, overloaded plate full of overcooked rice and tasteless beans. My Carne Asada was cut way too thick and had no flavor. Chewy, too. :(-

In the past I have always loved the food and drinks at La Margarita, but the service and experience last night was not good at all. The waitress was so glued to the new iPhone ordering system that my friend and I thought she was texting right in front of us at first. It's convenient technology, but eye contact and a smile is still important. Also, it did not prevent our orders from being wrong. My basic tacos were surprisingly bland, and overpriced for two traditional (read: smallish) tacos. I'm okay with paying $20 for a meal if it's delicious and the overall experience is worth the price, but unfortunately La Margarita did not deliver. Hopefully it was just on off night.

  • Alex B.

Some items are a tiny bit better than you'll find at the other Mexican places in town, but prices can be a little more too, and service is slower. Interior decor is fairly blah (compared to several local places with murals and lots of colors). So overall, this place is just another of a bunch of fairly interchangeable, nothing-to-write-home-about Mexican places in Salem.

    (3)
  • Chris W.

For Mexican, this gets five stars from us. Excellent food and our service was great (unlike another reviewer I just read). We really liked the use of mesquite sauce, distinct and different for Mexican. My wife's "caddilac margarita" was really good. We would come here often if we lived closer.

    (5)
  • Mira N.

Good tequila selection and margaritas. The pre-meal salsa is flavorful (unlike some places in town that do better overall meals - I'm looking' at you, Casa Baez!). If you like mesquite grilled, well, everything - then you'll like this place. Me, I'm not into mesquite - and it's difficult finding something on the menu that doesn't have that distinctive mesquite-y-ness. Fortunately for me, they seem to have the beef and mango special regularly. It may sound like an odd combo, but it's actually remarkably delicious and the differing flavors really enhance one another. So, if you're into mesquite, check it out... however, if you want something a little different, trek a few blocks north to La Margarita Express (just north of the bus mall), which has Salvadoran food as well as the standard Tex-Mex fare.

I haven't had Mexican food this devoid of flavor since elementary school lunch. Everything seemed like it came right off a Food Services of America truck or something. The guacamole was pastel-- I'm guessing one part avocado to eight parts mayonnaise. The saving grace was decent service and complimentary chips with salsa and pico de gallo.

This is my fourth restaurant while in Salem, OR... I have to say that I am from Austin, Texas where there is an authentic Mexican food restaurant on every corner. I am not ashamed to say that I am a Mexican food snob and I find it interesting how many Mex. restaurants I try and nothing compares to home. Now, La Marg was very good and everyday should end with a Margarita. I tried the enchiladas with the famous Mexican cream sauce and I am still trying to figure that one out. The rice and bean are tasty and everything tastes fresh.

  • Diana H.

This is my favorite Mexican restaurant. Ever. Ever, ever. Their pico de gallo is unparalleled. If you're hungry, order from their combinations - not your typical. I get the burrito combo: a burrito (HUGE) filled with grilled steak, accompanied by a chicken soft taco with some sort of wonderful salsa on top that tastes like pineapple. I know - interesting combo, but it's delicious. The soft taco combo is also delicious if you're not as hungry. Their Cadillac margaritas are AMAZING. Pedro, the owner is usually around, and if you're not careful, you may just receive a complimentary appetizer of chips with refried beans, melted cheese, and sour cream on top. Who could resist??

  • Rick D.

Visiting Salem and checked out Yelp for local recommended Mexican place. Yes, the service is fast. Yes, they have a great tequila selection. But their "special anniversary margarita" (came with the glass) was WAY too tart as if they made it with some kind of concentrated mix that wasn't mixed properly. An ordered combination that was supposed to come with a cheese enchilada was delivered with a chile relleno. A chicken tamale had 2 shreds of chicken in it. The mole sauce was watery. The fish taco had a nice mesquite smoke but the corn tortillas tasted raw.

  • Dave M.

Great Margaritas that pack a punch. Being from New Mexico, we weren't expecting the authentic feel or great cooking that La Margarita delivered. Great place, if you're looking for homemade tortillas and a larger variety of Mexican food options. Not too spicy, and the mesquite grill was good.

  • Diana G.

Good family restaurant. This has been a go to for my family for decades. Their specials are pretty tasty, and surprising for family Mexican restaurants, good sized. It is comfortable, simple, and quick. The service is alright, and you won't have any regrets about the food. Last time I had their special: Stuffed pepper with vegetables, pork, walnut sauce, and covered in great cheese and pomegranates. I was psyched. They also have some great chips, but only have the salsa of the day to try them with. *Their fried ice cream is literally just cornflakes on ice cream. Don't be tempted.

A regular favorite. Visiting is like coming home. Our regular drink orders are remembered. The best Cadillac margarita on the planet.

  • Dustin C.

Food here is OK, an that is a big ok, mkay? Portions are small, drinks are awesome though. So have a lot of those then order food! I had to take a dump at mid meal, the bathrooms are shared with other business in complex though. So make sure you get the door code or you will be "shit out of luck". Be sure to use the (pooping friends network), and scout out a place elsewhere to do your major downloads.

Best Mexican Food by far!!! The closer to the border the better the food, so when we moved to Oregon...we were not very impressed with the Mexican food here. Could not find great those great flavors in Oregon. Had the pleasure of trying La Margarita Saturday, AMAZING! Rice was fluffy with rich flavors, beans have the refried taste like your abuelita made. Think we will go back tonight and try another dish.

This sort of hole in the wall has been a favorite for decades. Friendly, consistent, reliable. I LOVE the enchilada suizas ... grilled chicken with a Mexican cream sauce. And I really appreciate being able to have black beans instead of standard refried beans. Pedro does a great job. And having a grill means there is just that extra bit of flavor to the specials, to chicken, etc. And a qualifier, I like Mexican food that's flavorful, but not spicy. I get that here. There are lots of Mexican restaurants in the area that just dish up the same plain stuff from a big pot and give you a giant plateful. La Margarita goes beyond that with more flavor and fresh tortillas. And their fish specials are excellent, too. If you can do it, enjoy a margarita, too. The Cadillac? Oh my. Flavor and only one gives me a nice buzz, they don't scrimp on the tequila. Summertime fresh strawberry margaritas are most excellent, too. Always friendly and fast, clean and tasty.

I love Mexican food and they passed the bar with their home made tortillas. My first time visiting I had the carne asada plate and what made me want to come back was the hot sauce they provided me! A homemade delicious combination!

Was visiting Salem for a few days so this was the first of 6 meals in town. It was a very nice start. The highlights: -comfy ambiance. -fast good service -amazing nacho's -margarita's in pitcher format The one caution I'd give is to beware how much you eat. 2 of the 6 of us had upset stomachs from over eating, but honestly, thats our bad.

Wow! The enchilada suiza was out of this world amazing! My friend ordered the huarache which was also delicious. All washed down with one of the best blended mango margaritas I've ever had. Good think I'm working this off at Yoga Escape tomorrow!

This is our "go to" place for Mexican food in Salem. We've been coming here for years. The drinks are very good. We have lots of favorites on the menu. The chimichanga is always very good, as are the quesadillas. And one family member is a particularly big fan of the enchilada suisa. The chile relleno is one by which others can be judged. The menu includes some gourmet type of entries you aren't likely to find elsewhere. Try the El Jibarito if you want something delicious and unusual. Really good. Daily specials often offer you dishes that are as novel as they are tasty. This is more grilled and gourmet mexican food than traditional texmex or am mexican fare. But it is good stuff. Service is fantastic. Pedro, the owner, puts on great food and drink classes. Check it all out.

  • Brigitt H.

I only ever order one thing at La Margarita: Relleno Combination, which is a chile relleno and a chicken enchilada swimming in the best cream sauce I've ever had. I literally get this every time. We come here often - the waitresses are friendly, the food often comes lightening fast (though we suspect this might be because our order is the same and might be made as we walk in!), unless it is particularly busy. We are happy to eat baskets of chips and salsa while we wait. The margaritas are strong, and delicious. The only thing we are ever disappointed about is the inconsistency of the guacamole. Sometimes it's perfect, other times not so much. But still our favorite mexican restaurant in Salem!

  • Katey H.

Holy Guacamole! Ok....well, I didn't have guacamole with my meal but those I was with could vouch for how good it was. The food here was amazing. This isn't your typical Mexican restaurant menu. We went on a weeknight right at 5pm when they opened. We immediately got seated, served chips & salsa and water. Since we hadn't been here before and their menu has A LOT of options, we took our time looking over the menu, but of course ordered drinks. I noticed they do house-infused alcohol so I had a peach daiquiri infused with the peach rum they make in house. It was really great! The waitress was more than happy to answer any questions we had. I ended up ordering the La Jibarito. It was really good. The carnitas was really tender. The description said fried plantains. I excepted the typical fried tostones I would get other places, but the plantains with this meal is what I'd consider the maduros (or sweet) type of plantain. It was still really good. I can't wait to have a reason to drive back down to Salem and go to dinner here again. I see other reviews that had bad service but we didn't have that problem.

  • EM F.

Came here all through college! While the menu has changed, everything is delicious. I love the tortilla soup! They make their own tortillas, and you always get hot chips and two kinds of salsa when you sit down. They've been in Salem for years, and they are one of the best things about Salem.

  • Brian R.

Pretty typical Mexican food, about what you would expect for a casual place and the $. Great chips and salsa and friendly and attentive staff. Apparently the free suckers at the counter are only for kids. I was cut off mid-grab. Good suckers too. Not the cheap little Dumb-Dumbs you get at bank but full on blow pops!

  • Aimee M.

I am giving this place 4 stars due to the pitcher of margaritas ($25)! They were good and strong and very tasty. In my opinion, the food is lacking. I ordered the chalupa/steak special and it arrived cold....everything on the plate was cold. Not worth $12 to me. We were with a party of 12 and none of us had truly spectacular food. The service was good and quick. The staff wasn't overly friendly, but OK. I think there are better food options in Salem, but definitely stop in for a pitcher of margaritas!

  • Michael H.

La Marg is our default restaurant. It's only a 20-minute walk from our house, which is part of why we eat there so often. But the food is excellent, the service is first-rate, and the drinks are very fine. As other reviewers have noted, Pedro Rosales, the owner, runs a tight ship. We are regulars there, so he knows us by name. We typically have our food within 15 minutes of walking in the front door. It is always well-made and tasty. The service is some of the best in Salem: always polite, always cheerful, always quick. Although I can't prove it, I think the complimentary appetizer Diana H. mentioned is only given to regulars (possibly only regulars who tip well). The staff there works hard, so don't forget to reward them. Pedro makes trips to Mexico City every year to see what the latest trends are in upscale cuisine. We are the lucky recipients of his research! While the menu certainly has all of the things that you would expect a good Mexican restaurant to have, the daily specials are where Pedro's field trips show up. Our favorite dishes are cheese enchiladas (an excellent benchmark for Mexican restaurants), chile rellenos (sigh...), and enchiladas de queso con salsa verde (nicely spicy). If you are a tequila connoisseur, this is the place for you, as La Marg has a very extensive list of tequilas, including tasting options. The Cadillac margarita cannot be beat (although we keep trying to find one better!), and there are a number of others that they serve that are almost as good. They also have a good selection of Mexican beers, including Negro Modelo, Pacifico, Corona (of course), and others.

Definitely one of the best Mexican restaurants I've ever been to! The chips and salsa were wonderful and so was the carnita dish that I ordered, which came with a plantain, guacamole and cilantro. I will most certainly be returning soon.

Just a comment on another persons review. Tracy D. says the tortillas here are not homemade, but I have been there when they are making them! As for the carne asada, when I've had it, it was delicious! La Margarita always has the best mexican food around!

Great Mexican food, great margaritas. The portions are good for the prices and their guacamole is just heavenly. This is the perfect place to come with a group of friends to enjoy some authentic mexican food, good service and great menu options.

Been here twice in my short stay in Salem, and I've been quite pleased both times with the food and the service. Tasty complimentary chips and salsa, delicious mesquite smoked chicken tacos, smokey flavorful black beans, delicious mojitos (they'll do it with no sugar, too, light and delicious!) I highly recommend them!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization.
