Everyone told me it's the best authentic mexican food you'll find in Oregon. Well i finally tried it and it was ok. Far from authentic. Typical American - Mexican fare as far as im concerned but portions were generous and a value.

For the endless Mexican food options in Salem, La Hacienda Real does a pretty stand up job as a local chain. Of all the handful of locations, this one on Commercial I've found serves up the tastiest renditions of their robust menu and is by far the most popular of the bunch. The interior is a little tacky, but that's common with a lot of themed Mexican establishments. It's pretty spacious, groups and families should have no problem dining here and the parking is also very solid. It seems a bit more packed at lunch than any other hour, though I've been known to dip in here for a quick dinner or two. One will find the menu is pretty Americanized, which is not a terrible thing. Every once in awhile, one could use a helping of queso fundido ($6) or a spread of chicken taquitos ($9). I would do my best to avoid the Mexican pizza ($8) which for all experiences has been pretty dreadful, presentation and sloppiness included. Once you get past the colorful desserts (Who has ever heard of a churros a la mode, apple burrito or cheesecake chimichanga? Props for the creativity.), taco salads, and endless nacho combinations, there is the heart of the menu - a dazzling array of platos especiales, which any Mexican food loving patron would appreciate. Here are some of the better ones: * Mole Ranchero ($14): Three juicy pieces of chicken (with the bone) smothered in a rich mole sauce, with rice and some pseudo-boring frijoles to boot. * Mexican Trio ($26): This platter of skirt steak, chicken breast, and Monterrey shrimps seriously reminds me of Olive Garden's "Tour de Italy" but with a la raza vibe. Surprisingly, the meat has always been cooked quite well and the seasoning is just right. The price tag is highly questionable though. * Enchiladas Colorado ($11): If they do anything well, it's enchiladas. The colorado sauce is a tad sweet at times, but the soft corn tortillas make for a nice bite. * Pollo a la Parilla ($13): There is something about nicely grilled chicken breast with a fresh flour (or corn) tortilla that drives my appetite toward a Mexican craving. The Pollo Jalisco is a very decent alternative. Sure, the prices are going to be a little out there for Salem folks but that comes with the approachable ethnic chain territory. The extra star goes toward their service, which has been the reason why I can count on coming here and being treated well. The food might not knock your socks off, but it's a far cry from the less stellar options in town.

While visiting family in the Albany/Salem area we stopped here for dinner, we were craving Mexican....food was damn good! Homemade tortillas were the best, followed by the delicious beans & rice! The portions are huge and the service was great! When you first sit down they bring you chips with salsa and also a bean dip with cabbage, at first I didn't try the cabbage with the beans but once I did, we had to ask for a second helping of the beans & cabbage.

Gracias - very delicious and now I'm stuffed. VERY great and attentive service, good food and delicious drinks. I like the decor - busy but not tacky. Really enjoyed the bean dip and the tortillas.

This is my go to spot for mexican food in Salem. As noted in a lot of the other reviews the homemade tortillas are legit. I'm a fan of grabbing lunch to go from here too. Quite often they have lunch specials for $5.95 or $6.95.

Thank you Yelp! It was a Tuesday night, not typically the busiest time for dinner establishments, but this place was hopping busy and the parking lot was full. That is usually a good sign. Nonetheless we were seated promptly without delay. The service was attentive and friendly. Despite how busy they were, our food came very quickly, and all at once. It was outstanding, everyone in our party of five was super pleased with their dinners. Clean, fast, friendly, yummy, and obviously well-liked to be so busy on an off-night. Obviously there was a good reason. Also, we spent less money here on our party of five than we spent on a party of two at a hipster diner/bar in Eugene the day before. Prices are excellent, and portions are more than adequate, we were all full. This place is pretty far off the I-5 corridor, but we diverted here based on Yelp reviews, and after this experience we will probably always stop here when passing through despite the detour.

Easily the best Mexican restaurant in the city. The food is phenomenal (and reasonably priced, the drinks are great, and the staff is wonderful. The decor is so fun, and really makes you wonder how long it took them to decorate! I usually get the enchilada meal, which is my favorite. Their fajitas are pretty yummy too, and the tortillas that come with them are to die for. Definitely recommend La Hacienda.

La Hacienda on south Commercial Street in Salem: We went here for dinner yesterday at 4pm, and the restaurant was not crowded. I'm fifty-nine years old, and this may have been the worst table service I've seen ~ ever. We asked for salsa seven different times, and the things we ordered never did get to our table, all at once. I thought it was a comedy show; my girlfriend was not pleased, at all. I worked as a waiter during HS, all thru college and while starting my first company until age 26, so relatively familiar with the process of covering a table! I don't believe I've ever written a one-star YELP review, but this experience was notable. We'll never go back, stating the obvious.

The chips, salsa and beans are excelente! Great lunch time specials. Expect a wait on Friday and Saturday evenings but they do a great job of getting people seated. Excellent service!

  • Marissa L.

Phenomenal!!! Mom and I got the veggie enchiladas and sis got the veggie fajitas! Both were amazing. Best enchiladas I have ever had. The tortillas are homemade and you can taste it in every bite. If I weren't just visiting I would come back once a week! Also the Cadillac margs were delicious! No skimping on tequila ;)

  • Jade W.

They are good, service isn't terrible but the food can sometimes be blah. I'm not crazy about spicy foods, but I do love Mexican food (quite a problem sometimes) however as long as I inform my server they're usually really good with keeping it calmer for me.

Very good Mexican food! Found a gem in this restaurant. The homemade flour tortillas are delicious! Party of 5 and everyone loved everything! Extra hot salsa is very good also! We will be back! Try the fajitas!

Amazing food, handmade tortillas, friendly staff - what more could you want? Every meal I've had at LaHa has been outstanding. I'd recommend it to anyone :) Favorite dish of the month is the steak Fajitas!

WOW. So i'm from Southern California. Coming across the best Mexican food I've ever tasted didn't come to my mind in Oregon. Hand's down! Drink's, Food, Cleanliness and service all 5 Stars...

My go to place for great Mexican food when I lived in Salem and every time we are in the area. They make home made flour tortillas that are so great it's hard to eat the factory made tortillas again. The item that I order the most is the Chicken Fajita. Best I ever had and it comes with there house made flour tortillas. The chips are served with salsa and a plate of beans and a cabbage pico de gallo.

Food was good. Staff was nice and knowledgeable of the menu. Portions were small. Not worth the cost of the meal.

The Spinach Enchilada with no cheese was good and my wife enjoyed a chicken and beef taco, but the service wasn't too friendly. Still looking for a good Mexican place in Salem Oregon.

  • Rob M.

Overall very disappointed. This has historically been one of my local favorites, but the last two visits have been disappointing. Eight family members joined me tonight for my birthday dinner. Six of the eight of us had cold entrees. This is something that I experienced the last visit. It seems to be a recurring theme and it appears that staff do not take the attention to detail that is necessary to maintain consistency.. Value and quality is not a theme for this restaurant.

Was not impressed. The service was terrible. The food was so salty and not very tasty. Will not go again.

I swear this place has got to be one of the best Mexican food places I've ever been to--and it's in Keizer which has got to be one of the worst towns in Oregon. I get the pork fajitas with flour tortillas almost every time. They're incredible. The tortillas are made in the back and are probably the leading cause of heart disease in the town. Tip the tortilla lady.

Good food, good service. Nothing outstanding. Nice big margaritas. I like the refried beans that come with the chips n salsa.

  • Shelley W.

Wasn't bad, wasn't great. I felt the prices were relatively high for what I was expecting. Some unique menu items in the $18-25 price range which you are unlikely to find at other Mexican restaurants. I had the enchiladas Vallarta this time around for $10.95. Was one of the less expensive items on the menu. Soft drinks way expensive in my opinion. I stuck with water. There is such a thing as being checked in on TOO many times. Two different servers checked in on us 4-5 times just to see how things were going. I don't think either was aware the other one was doing it. Personally, I'm an introverted "fill my water and leave me in peace" type of eater. Check on me more than once and I'll think it's overkill. But that's just me. Nice atmosphere, quick to be seated and served, food came out quickly. Would not be my number one choice for a spontaneous "I feel like Mexican food" kind of night, but overall not a bad experience.

I like coming here. The food is better than most with large portions. I love the way it is decorated. Beautiful and colorful. My daughter loves to see them make the tortillas and they taste yummy too. They serve beans and slaw with the chips and salsa which I think is neat. My family also enjoyed it.

Being from Texas, this didn't work for my palette. I found the food bland, the service lackluster and the menu confusing. I had chicken fajitas and they had a weird almost curry-like spice on them and my man had the tacos al carbon...which looked more like enchiladas. i will say, though, the weird been and coleslaw thing they brought with the chips and salsa was amazing! the highlight of the meal.

Best Chicken Carnitas ever..and hard to find elsewhere. Tender n juicy with just the right amount of spices. Tortillias made fresh in house n the result it simply delicious! Always get a great welcome n fast service. By far my fav place for mexican food at a decent price!

  • Thomas F.

I came here about a month ago with my friend and thought the food was outstanding. The salsa is some of the best I've ever had and my carnita burrito was big and flavorful. This is my favorite Mexican restaurant in Salem and I hope to come again soon.

Very clean. Attentive wait staff. The food was consistent Americanized Mexican food. If you need a little more spice in your life, ask for the spicy salsa.

This is truly a treasure, Great, consistent food, wide variety in menu and very friendly service. The chips, salsa and beans served with every meal are the best in town. Now the best part...homemade fresh flour and corn tortillas. Wow are they ever great. You can't beat the service, price or food quality.

Best margarita in Salem hands down!! I made it a point one weekend to try numerous Mexican restaurants in order to find the best strawberry margarita and la hacienda won my vote hands down !! It was the only place that had strawberry seeds in the margarita showing me that it was fresh and it was blended to perfection. La hacienda also has the most amazing homemade tortillas and salsa, I would highly recommend la hacienda to anyone looking for a perfect margarita, delicious meal and fun clean atmosphere

Good chips and salsa. Menu is large and overwhelming .. Steak en jungo (sp) is fantastic but HUGE. We eat here at least 2x a mo (my in laws love it) the staff is less than pleasant. Maybe it's me by I always feel like they hate me. But the service is fast. So I will overlook the friendly factor. I also love the homemade flour tortillas ... Mmm

Back in1992, there used to be a Mexican restauranat right next to the Phoenix Inn on S Commercial. Now there lies a Walgreens....then one day it was gone, and I was saddened by the disappearance of my favorite Mexican place in Salem. I don't remember the exact date, but that is when La Hacienda opened, and we stopped in to visit, and there were the people I truly enjoyed interacting with back in the good ole' restaurant. I was once again happy. Their food is consistently great, and the service is always quick and excellent. I have never had any dish here that I didn't like, nor has anyone I ever dined with here been disappointed. I don't live in Salem anymore, but I do love to stop here whenever I get a chance when I come to visit. Oh, and they do make a great Margarita as well :-)

The Hacienda is a great place to visit if you need you're looking for a Mexican food fix! The meal starts with crisp tortilla chips and sides of salsa, pico de gallo and a refried bean dip. I ordered the Camarones a la Diavlo. The spicy sauce, tender shrimp, flavorful mushrooms and onions were an excellent choice. To top off the meal my camarones came with fresh handmade tortillas. I could eat them alone and be one happy girl. My one hesitation on rating this place 4/5 was the crowded seating. They had us stuffed into that restaurant like sardines in a can.

Had been craving Mexican for a while and this place hit the spot! Delicious tortillas, hearty quesadilla, fairly strong tequila sunrise and I love that the chips come with not only a nice chunky salsa, but a chop salad and beans as well!

One of my favorite places to eat! Love the homemade tortillas, love the bean dip, love the salsa, love the food! I haven't ever ordered anything there I wasn't pleased with, and they have a wide variety of margarita flavors too (many are seasonal, which I find cool). I usually order some tortillas to go as a snack - they really are heavenly food day or night. The plates are rather big, so generally I get two meals out of one dinner. I usually order as such and avoid things that don't reheat well, or eat them at the first sitting. On weekend nights it can be pretty busy, but it's well worth the wait. Just call ahead and see what their timeline is like. They also do pick-up to-go food, which is also awesome. PS - All of their locations serve fantastic food. I've never had a complaint about any of them.

Always great. We love to get their fajitas, chicken en mole, and enchiladas. Freshly made tortillas are great. Take out orders are a great way to go on busy nights.

One of our favorites. We probably eat at LHR 1-3 times a month, and have for at least the past seven years. Very rarely do we have a problem with service or our orders. A favorite is the chicken fajitas. Large enough for us to share. We love their cabbage that accompanies the retried beans, salsa and chips that are served before the meal.

This is my favorite Mexican place in Salem, period. I love to eat in and dine out here. The staff is always very nice. The salsa and bean dip is amazing here. I have to remind myself not to fill up on it it before the main entree. This place is just one of my favorites, the food always tastes so fresh! The food is not even close to bland and everything just tastes delicious. Benefits to ordering out is you get extra tortillas and a free bags of chips and salsa! I was a little disappointed as I had found a 6 dollar off coupon for dinner but found it only works when dining in. Still I paid the full amount as it was take out and didn't mind as this place is that good. Also if you order a large container of salsa the container is very large, be prepared to have a ton of chips on hand. This is my one stop shop for Mexican food in Salem and nothing in town comes close!

I had the pork fajitas and it was awesome! My partner had the shrimp enchilada and it was gross. The service wasn't the best but I will go back again.

I ate dinner here while in Salem on business, I was thoroughly impressed. I came in at the peak of dinner service, the parking lot outside was packed but somehow there was no wait. The hostess was friendly and efficient. Once seated they immediately brought me a plate of beans and shredded cabbage, a bowl of salsa and a basket of chips. this honestly was enough food to fill me up. The beans were delish, my favorite preparation: some mashed some whole and all together very creamy and delicious. I ordered a rocks margarita. It was perfect, not too sweet, not watery, Just right. Again, I could have just stopped here. This was plenty of food. Instead I decided to go ahead and order a sizzling plate of chicken fajitas. YUM! The chicken was cooked perfectly and the onions and peppers were not overdone, just right. OK, now for the best part: HOMEMADE TORTILLAS. Dude, so good! This dinner was served with a heaping plate of guacamole, sour cream, cheese and lettuce. Such a good meal. The decor in this place is a little cheesy and over the top, but honestly that's not why your here. This food is solid and the service is very attentive and friendly. If I ever find myself back in Salem I will make an effort to eat here again.

What is it with Mexican restaurants around here? We moved here from the southeastern US a few months back and have found Oregon Mexican food to be just abysmal. Everyone that I've spoken with around here has immediately (emphatically, enthusiastically) recommended La Hacienda Real, so my husband and I decided to try it out. Twice. Sigh. Our first time, we started off with cheese dip, which happened to be a bowl of something that resembled melted swiss cheese. No peppers, no spices, nothing. It immediately seized up in the bowl, too, and to eat it on a chip you'd have to cut yourself a slice. Unappetizing. The entrees came with cheddar cheese on top (really?? Cheddar cheese in a Mexican restaurant? TRY AGAIN.) and were similarly unappetizing and not flavorful. Spices, people! Use them! The margarita was a bright spot, and the service has ranged from spotty-to-decent. The tortillas were tasty and we liked the bean dip. Our second time that we tried LaHa we had the exact same complaints: bland, bland bland, but I don't think it's limited to this particular restaurant. The dearth of delicious Mexican food seems to be a Salem-wide issue. We tried La Margarita a few times and it was marginally better, but all in all it's been a pretty disappointing go. Almost as bad as our search for good BBQ. WOE.

Kinda cramped inside, but oh well. Tables are small. But the tortillas are very good. The service is usually very fast, efficient, and friendly. They refill those free chips/salsa in a flash! It's usually very busy inside, but you really can't tell in regards to the service -- as its pretty consistent -- so this is a very good thing. Mexican food is mexican food is mexican food, which is the case here -- but its above average. Worth a trip!

Another example of "good for Salem" but not great. When you compare this to other restaurants in Salem, they do a good job of preparing a plate of flavorful food.....except for the tortillas which are bland at best. But, like the other Salem area Mexican restaurants, the offerings are overly cheesy and greasy. So if that is what you are craving, it works. However, for those of us conscious of blood pressure, cholesterol, and waist lines, then this is a once every other week place at best.

  • Julia H.

I'm pretty sure this is the best Mexican food you can get anywhere, Mexico included. The homemade tortilla chips, bean dip, and fresh salsa are so undeniably good that you will be stuffed before your dinner comes. To say the menu is extensive is an understatement. My personal favs are the chicken fajitas (Fantastic!), or any of the combo items. The margaritas are pretty tasty too. The moral of this story is that this is the best place ever, and you should go there NOW!

When we have the urge for Mexican food, it's a rare event for us to choose a location other than La Hacienda. It can be a bit crowded for parties of 5 or more, but the service is always prompt. One of my very favorites is the mocajete - a thin Mexican stew with chicken, beef, vegetables and a bit of a kick. Their tortillas and salsa are some the best in the area.

Worst Mexican food I've ever had. My girlfriend and I chose this place for date night. The cheese on her food was canned queso, and still cold. The middle of her burrito was partially frozen. I had enchiladas, and the enchilada sauce was just canned tomato paste. The rice and beans were still, some how, sub par. How do you mess up rice and beans? I have retold my experience to many people. I will never be back.

Fajitas are fantastic! Service is a bit hit-or-miss but homemade tortillas make up for it.

You would think that we would go to Salem, OR to look at the capitol; but, my friends and I went to try a mexican restaurant. Greeting: it feel like it took a little while for a host to come and seat us. At one point, we almost sat ourselves; but, when she came she was pleasant and nice. Decor: walking from the outside to the inside, I really felt like I was walking into a restaurant in Mexico. The design and decor made the atmosphere 100 times better! I enjoyed the theme. Service: decent. Took a little bit for the server to greet us, but that's ok. By the end of the day, we were taken care of and the service staff was very nice. Food: we were served tortilla chips with refried beans and salsa to start off. we order the macho burrito (rice, beans, cheese, and meat with a sauce ontop. served with lettuce sour cream and tomatoes), tostada colorado salad (meat, beans, lettuce, cheese, tomatoes, and you could add sour cream and guacamole for extra), and tacos al carbon (meat, tomatoes, onions, lettuce, cilantro, and guacamole). We all enjoyed our dishes! my friend and I dont like refried beans so the server gladly changed them for black beans. Miscellaneous: The bathroom was extremely clean and the decor (again) was awesome...even for a bathroom. If i was ever back in Salem, OR, then i might just come back and try the different dishes. But, don't take my word for it. Go out and try it!

This is my favorite Mexican food fix ever! I love the homemade tortilla's, rarely do you find that anymore, and the service is always top notch and fast. My favorite is the Molcete, sort of a soup that is to die for. The seasonings are fabulous.

Tastes just like every other mexican restaurant---greasy, cheesy, saucy yum. Nothing spectacular, and all the food kind of tastes the same, no matter what you order. Definately American-Mexican food. Good handmade tortillas.

I'm pretty much going to echo what everyone else said: good to very good Mexican-American food with good service and a huge menu. 4 of us went here on a late Friday night. It was late enough that it wasn't at all crowded. Waitress was good and prompt with refills and orders. I decided to stick with the basic chicken burrito, which came with the standard beans and rice. It was pretty tasty and I had no problem devouring the whole thing. Everyone enjoyed their meal and there weren't any leftovers in sight at the end of the evening. The menu is almost TOO extensive. Another reason I kept it simple and went with the basic chicken burrito ; ) For laughs be sure to check out the picture of the dish that's an entire fish, head, eyes and all. (My friend: "Umm, nobody here order that please. Thanks") I wouldn't mind at all going back if I get the chance.

Pretty good restaurant, good service and food is good, I usually go to the one in Keizer but a friend from church took me here once and it was pretty good too. I always order the chicken or steak fajitas!

When you walk in, you see a beautiful Latina woman making fresh tortillas on the grill. Hand made and literally the best I've ever had. I strongly suggest you tip her on your way in or out. Her tortillas make me thank God I'm not gluten free. My server came immediately. Very fast service. Best salsa and tortillas I've ever had. And that is saying a lot. Lunch special is only $5.95 and was worth much more. So delicious. I'll be back. Update .... I order the lunch special and it was a cheese enchilada. The cheese inside was not melted. At all. It was cold shredded cheese. Isn't it supposed to be melted? Is this why I'm only paying 5.95? If I could rate them on salsa and tortillas alone 5 stars.

I'll believe this is the best Mexican restaurant in the city of Salem the other one is Cancun. I had the tamales with black beans and rice. it was really good. service also and chips were very nice. There flour tortillas were spot on. They were served with shrimp fajitas and the same side dish wonderful food. don't forget to tip the lady who makes the flour tortillas.

Four stars is quite a stretch for La Hacienda. The decor was quite cheesy, but I wasn't there for the decor. I was there for a big burrito and I was hungry. While we were waiting for our order we were service chips and salsa with beans and a mexican cole slaw. The salsa, beans and cole slaw were delicious! Our food came out rather quickly. My wife ordered a taco and a tamale. The tamale was worse than a tamale from Costco and the taco was served in a pre-made taco shell. I was surprised to see a pre-made shell at a restaurant where the tortillas are made fresh. We could have gotten a better taco at taco bell. Ouch! My Chipotle burrito was pretty good. However, the chicken was over cooked and the sauce was not on the burrito? The beans were good but the rice was inedible. Finally, the service was quick, but our waitress was short with us. She never made eye contact and seemed annoyed every time she came to the table. We left full and now have tummy aches :(

This is the BEST mexican I have had. PERIOD. My Family and I have been coming here for 12 years since our move from California. The flavoring of the food (beans, rice, sauces) tastes AUTHENTIC. Coming from a latin family...I know my spices. Best tortillas in Oregon. If you're looking for overly seasoned, quantity over quality, nasty mex, go somewhere else. This is as good as it gets for a restaurant. The only negative is, as previously mentioned, you might smell the food on your clothing after you leave for a while after. I personally treasure the aromatic momento.

Very nice decor and the air conditioning worked great. However, the service was slow and it was by far the worst Mexican food I have ever eaten. I had the seafood chimichanga which was mostly tortilla, and filled with a soupy mess with a few small pieces of seafood. It was topped with velveeta-ish sauce. The rice was horribly bland as were the beans. I ate the chimichanga but really did not enjoy it. My husband said his food was really bad as well. Thank goodness we were just passing through Salem.

  • Kate W.

Always great. We love to get their fajitas, chicken en mole, and enchiladas. Freshly made tortillas are great. Take out orders are a great way to go on busy nights.

Fajitas are fantastic! Service is a bit hit-or-miss but homemade tortillas make up for it.

Always go here with friends! Seating is fast, service is friendly! Food is prompt, huge plates full of goodness! and scrumptious!! I am not a huge mexican food fan, however I LOVE La Hacienda Real!

  • Adam T.

  • Kaye F.

    (3)
  • Erin H.

Tastes just like every other mexican restaurant---greasy, cheesy, saucy yum. Nothing spectacular, and all the food kind of tastes the same, no matter what you order. Definately American-Mexican food. Good handmade tortillas.

This is my go to spot for mexican food in Salem. As noted in a lot of the other reviews the homemade tortillas are legit. I'm a fan of grabbing lunch to go from here too. Quite often they have lunch specials for $5.95 or $6.95.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
