My partner loves this place...but since I don't eat chinese food -- I just go and sit with him. So this review is based on ambiance and tea. Their tea is typical chinese fare. Good, not great. The environment is OK -- its a very open space -- with lots of color. Kinda feels though it was decorated in the early 1980s and hasn't been updated. I once ordered their grilled cheese. It was the worst grilled cheese I'd ever tasted, lol. But I can't blame them, since I ordered a grilled cheese in a chinese restaurant. Although how can one mess up a grilled cheese? Go here and find out yourself!

Its a shame that no one has reviewed the Hong Kong House along Commercial Street, as its one of the few (perhaps only) places in Salem that serves Chinese dim sum. There is a lot to be said about this place so lets concentrate on the positives: * Outstanding service: The owner is super friendly as are all of the waitresses * Dim Sum: Its not the best in the world or anything, but impressive for the fact its in Salem and the variety is decent. * Ambiance / Interior: The place looks bigger than it really is. But from the outside it looks like a big castle along a hill, almost too hard to miss. Despite the dark decor, there is plenty of space for big groups and couples. This could be a real power house if it had more business. For all of the positives, there are bound to be a couple of negatives: * Standard Chinese American Fare: This is to be expected in Salem. Its not entirely their fault as there staff here probably makes up 10% of the Chinese population already that the majority of the patrons here aren't Chinese and probably aren't appealed by the more authentic dishes. * Lack of business: There isn't nearly enough people that could be visiting this place. The lunch hours have been near dull as tumbleweed could easily roll in as the staff waits in the corner for some action to happen. Dim Sum has a solid showing, but that only lasts for so long. Is it too inconvenient to visit? Is it too creepy for some folks? Its really needs a spike somewhere or this gem is going to be lost the graveyard of good Chinese restaurants to leave Salem.

I've been to this restaurant numerous times in the last 3 years. I enjoy going inside or take out. There has definitely been a reduction in the amount of people I see inside dining, but those are the times we live in and I'm happy to still patronize them. Their crab puffs are amazing. I love there sweet and sour chicken. The chicken is pieces of chicken not processed chicken shaped. Their pork fried rice is another favorite of mine. Very tasty. You can order pretty late too. Most nights as late as midnight or one in the morning.

I just realized that I mistakenly wrote a review for this place. I thought I was reviewing Kwan's at the time. I've actually been there at this point, and it was an adequate if unspectacular experience.

Absolute waste of time and money. Went for dim sum and the experience was almost enough to swear me off dim sum.

Went here today. . . it wasn't bad, although you already know the story of how old this place is and all. . . my dad said he used to go here as a kid when it was the last place south of town you'd see. The owners have since then changed hands, I finally decided to try this place for myself. I found that it's the type of joint that serves somewhat decent value type chinese food. Not saying it was excellent but it wasn't bad. The service was pretty good, the soup and tea was pretty average. The only thing that was kind of sub par was the fried shrimp, pretty much little shrimp with huge fried cakes around them. But for a lunch type place where you can get you're fix of sweet n' sour pork or chow mein for a cheap price, this may be for you. . . but for a nicer, fresher atmosphere with fancier dishes. . . go somewhere else.

I'm Chinese, and to my palate, this restaurant offers American Chinese food. Ordered crispy duck. It was the MOST greasy duck I've ever had. and many of the pieces are bones. A few edible pieces are saltier than the rest Then house special chow mein. It turned out to be CRISPY noodles ( I didn't know!), and it mostly had bean sprouts and peas, bland. The last one was spicy beef. Yuck! The staff was nice by replacing the crispy noodled to wet ones. Will NEVER go back in regards of the food

This place is good for three things, and three things only: fried shrimp, sweet and sour chicken, and cheap beer. Have I tried other things on the menu? Yep. Did I like them? Nope. Do I still keep coming back? Why yes, yes I do. The fried chicken is artery clogging with it's thick, crispy coating. The chicken has a neon-red sauce, that reminds me of my culinary idol (Chef Boyardee's) tomato sauce. The chicken definitely came from a package, and was tossed straight into a deep fryer. And the beer, for those of you who keep asking, is definitely not micro-brewed on site. To top it off, the decor is deplorable. It doesn't matter. It's delicious, cheap, filling, pick up is fast, and it will keep me coming back time and time again. Thank you, Hong Kong House, for a guilty pleasure that lives up to my expectations.

The staff is friendly, the food is fairly standard American Chinese. I usually get take out, so I can't comment on the speed and quality of table service, but my order is usually ready to pick up when they say it will be. Prices are average. The cooking is pretty consistent which means some stuff will always be salty and swimming in greasy sauce and other dishes will be pretty good. My favorites are the wor wonton soup, and the dry cooked string beans with pork. But I avoid anything with beef since it's often been kind of gristly. Portion sizes are generous. The interior is spacious, the decor is very kitschy Chinese, but the whole place looks kind of run down and in need of a cleaning. Like others said, I couldn't help noticing the huge sign in the lobby about how they are one of the top 100 Chinese restaurants in the country, or the top one in the area, etc. I think at some point I tried looking it up online, and couldn't find anything to back it up. So, nominally 3 stars. But after I looked up their score and report on the Marion county website, I decided to take off one more star (and I also decided not to eat there again until things improve).

I'm from HK and I'd drive up there from Eugene just for their Dim Sum! My friend from mainland China loves this place too! We did not have enough of their Turnip Cake, ordered a few order to take home. If you are not unsure about this place because of the previous review. I can tell you, the Dim Sum here are AUTHENTIC, DELICIOUS and not too greasy. Some of the Dim Sum dishes, no matter where you go, are always going to be greasy, you just have to pick and choose. Never tried their entree menu, only Dim Sum, so I can't comment on other food.

I ordered lunch from here today because I didn't have a whole lot of time to be gone from work and it's literally like 2 minutes away. I called in my order and was told that it would be ready in 30 minutes. I get there 30 minutes later and see no employees anywhere... A few minutes go by and I finally spot someone and tell her I'm here for a pick-up. I tell her my name, she says okay and walks away, I'm assuming to go get my order... She disappears for like 5 minutes, and then finally comes out with a cart full of food AND my food order that she promptly plops on an empty table. She disperses the food on the cart and walks right by my order and disappears again. No joke, she was in the back for 10 MINUTES (I seriously think she was back there doing dishes) before she came back out and rung me up. Oh no, it's okay, I totally don't mind cold food. And work can go fu&k itself, cause lady at Hong Kong house has dishes to do before dealing with customers. She was the worst. And I'm not gonna be wasting anymore time in this establishment anytime soon.

Their portions were much smaller this time than they used to be. The egg flower soup, on the other hand, has improved! The food was delicious, as usual. I'm never disappointed with the taste. The service was better this time than previous times we have gone in. We will probably always go back, because their food always tastes better than most other restaurants we have been to that are "chinese". Nothing about this place makes me leave going "wow that was amazing" but I do leave happy and glad we went. I would give them one more star if they hadn't shrunk their portion sizes on the family style dishes.

at one time the owner said that this is one of the top 100 Chinese restaurants in the United States, well let's just say it's one of the top 100 worst Chinese restaurants. and by the way I sent a letter to the owner saying just that. everybody makes their own choices and you do see a lot of people going there, but they don't have a clue how real Chinese food is supposed to be prepared. by the way I would be dubious about how clean this kitchen is. I got a slight look at it, not my cup of Tea

This was our only option for dim sum in Salem that was near our hotel. The restaurant looks outdated inside and out. The staff was pleasant but the food came out slowly. The stir-fried items were better than the dim sum. We appreciated that the food was not too greasy. Not sure if we would venture this way again.

The worst place in Salem. The bartender literally skipped every song that I paid for on the jute Box. I'll never go back. She was not nice.

I'm sad to report that my experience with Hong Kong House was terrible. I ordered dinner online, family style for a family of 3. The food was a strange color, everything had a tint of red to it. By the time my food was delivered (45 minutes after the proposed time) it was cold and wet (it was raining out side and containers were left open). My husband who rarely complains threw the food in the trash. We will not go back.

HK House was one of the few restaurants open during Christmas. I decided to try it out anyway despite the mediocre reviews. We were seated right away and the waitress was very nice. We ordered a lo mein, crispy duck, and crab puffs for an appetizer. Upon hearing my order of crispy duck, the waitress muttered something about taking "an hour" and walked away. My husband and I looked at each other and asked, "Is she coming back?" The waitress came back a few seconds later and happily wrote down my order for crispy duck. After about 10 minutes someone came out and told me, "Someone before you ordered the duck so we're out of duck." This was 12pm. One hour after opening. I guess you have to order something quickly before another customer does, in case they run out of food. I settled for a General Tsao's chicken instead. After about 20 minutes of waiting we wondered where our appetizer was, and instead of our appetizer, our main dishes came out instead. Oh well, no big deal, I thought. As long as we don't get charged for the crab puffs. Now to the food. The chicken wasn't trimmed and covered in fat. The sauce was decent though. The rice that came with the entree was about a day old and dry. The lo mein was incredibly bland with sparse bits of chicken. We weren't checked on one time during the course of our meal and I was finally offered a refill of water when the food was finished. We were quick to receive the check though. TMI: I was treated to a couple unwelcome trips to the bathroom a few hours after. Must've been the sauce? I've always wanted to eat Chinese food at a cheesy restaurant and I'm glad I checked this off the bucket list. Not recommended.

We love the food from this restaurant. We have been getting home delivered hot yummy Chinese food from Hong Kong House for at least 10 years. Always yummy. We have gotten to know the delivery driver, who has been delivering food to us since we first ordered. At that time we were living outside Salem kind of in the country. It was a long ways to bring us hot food...but no questioned asked. We tipped well to help the driver with gas. Our favorite menu items : Peking Pork, Goney Glazed Walnut Shrimp, Spring Rolls, Egg fu young.... We have eaten many different items on the menu, all good. The above list are the ones we go back for because we get cravings for them and they are consistently good. If you want good chinese take out, this is the place to call. You will find yourself going back again and again.

This place is amazing. Hands down the best Chinese food in Salem. I recommend the Kung pao chicken or beef. The sweet and sour chicken is amazing as well. The food is delicious and it's affordable as well. If you're looking for cheap delicious Chinese in Salem then Hong Kong House is for you.

OK - this is one of those guilty-pleasure places. The food is really not that good, but for some reason I really like it. It's greasy and a little sketchy (the house rice looks a little like the leftovers scraped from customers' plates, however good), but I keep coming back. I also love the fact that there is a really divey bar section; it's fun to go there to hang out and people-watch, and get some deliciously gross, greasy Chinese food. The Mongolian beef is my favorite dish. Don't come here for a date or a nice meal out... it's more of a fun, divey, greasy kind of experience. In a good way. It's also good for ordering Chinese for a movie night-in with your honey.

First time using Hong Kong House and Lounge. I ordered Bo Bo Platter, Moo Shu Pork and Egg Flower Soup (delivery orders need to be at least $20.00.) for myself as I stayed at Phoenix Inn. I called Hong Kong House because it was in the hotel guide as a place that would deliver. When I called, the address for the hotel was wrong on the hotel information and even though the person on the phone KNEW where Phoenix Inn was, she had me hang up and talk to the front desk to get the hotel address and call back, which is really the only complaint I had. I ordered my meal and was told it would be approximately 45 minutes. (An hour, but close enough). The delivery guy was nice enough. The food lasted 3 meals at the hotel. I had some for dinner, and put the rest in the fridge for the next day. The egg flour soup had great flavor, and was a bit thick, but really seemed to go down well and sooth the cough/cold I had. The Bo Bo Platter had 2 beef on a stick (tender, well seasoned), 4-5 fried shrimp, 2 parchment chicken, some bbq pork. The moo shu pork seemed like a lot of veggies/cabbage, a little pork, but it was very good. The wrappers that came with it were unusual, but when filled with the mixture it was delicious. I think I would order from there again. They have a decent menu, and good prices.

Had a tasty assortment of entrees. Cashew chicken, Mongolian beef, Kung pao chicken, lemon chicken, sweet & sour pork and chicken, beef with broccoli, house fried rice and white rice. The spicier dishes could have used more spice, but everything had excellent flavor and large shareable portions. Nice find to stumble upon! This was my first time at Hong Kong house, and I'll be sure to come back!

Best Chinese in Salem. Order the weird stuff and dim sum and you'll be good. Other places are better for crappy American Chinese like golden dragon. If you order the legit stuff you'll be happy.

Effing disgusting. The ONLY reason that I agreed to eat this food was because they deliver. The sauce on the beef and broccoli tasted, straight up, like beef gravy from a Hy-Top brand packet. The pancakes that accompanied the mu shu pork were those shitty rice paper wrappers. My fortune cookie said, "You will be greatly sorry you ordered this food." No, really, I hate that I love my husband so much I will endure this shit for him. Lucky for me he doesn't read Yelp so he doesn't know just HOW much I hate this faux Chinese garbage. What a waste of money.

I was so disappointed, after finding this place a month or so ago, it has became a regular stop on my way home from work, tonight I worked graveyard so I decided to order delivery while I got ready. I placed my order at 7:30, hopped in the shower, and got ready. 8:10 no food :/? So I called to check on my order, the lady who answered the phone told me my order hasn't been started yet as they just received. Knowing things like this happen I proceeded to explain I placed the order at 7:30 and that I had to leave for work at 9:15. She then finds the correct ticket, realizes it should have been done but informs me it will be another hour. Finally we get it worked out that she can have it ready if I come pick it up... Guess what I go pick it up and wait another 15 minutes, get given the wrong order which I don't notice until I am at work... So I was not impressed by your service or the refusal to give me a discount for my trouble.

I am from Los Angeles and I used to having almost anything able for delivery. This is actually the only Chinese restaurant I have found so far that delivers in my area in South Salem, however they do have a very expensive limits before they will allow deliveries. The food I did order for delivery was good. I opted for an appetizer sampler variety to try their food. I was more interested in sampling their wonton soup, however I have grown a custom to a brothy style soup with just wontons in it and not a lot of extras. They offer a war wonton soup that has so much going on in it I wasn't very pleased with what I received, although it was tasty. Overall for the price I paid and the convenience of the delivery service and the amount of food I received for what I paid I will return for additional services at the restaurant and I'm looking forward to enjoying a dine in experience as well.

I still don't understand the negative reviews. My family has eaten there twice and we have ordered delivery four times, tonight being delivery. What consistency it has been. This is very delicious food. I feel it's high quality and deserving kudos. We ordered Mongolian Beef/mild for our kids, Sesame Chicken, BBQ Pork Fried rice and Mar Far Chicken, plus spring rolls. Everything was perfect and delicious as it has always been. The prices are very reasonable for such delicious food. Our delivery arrived before the 45 min. stated. He was courteous and friendly. Thanks again for the great food Hong Kong House, even as delivery!

This restaurant serves fake Chinese food. Tastes really bad. The service was bad as well, server did not know what dish they had and had to search the menu.

This was the worst food that I have ever eaten- seriously. I could not even finish one egg roll because I could not bite through it. Seemed like it was stuffed with wood. Kid and I ordered two Bo Bo platters and all of the items were absolutely disgusting. I have never had more greasy and inedible food in my life. The bbq pork was the best thing on the platter but was bone dry stale and tasted like a hot fart. Really horrible.

Best chinese food I have had in Salem which isn't saying much. I'm a big fan of General Tso's Chicken and Mongolian Beef. Hong Kong House does this pretty well. Their 4 Treasures is also a pretty good pick if you like General Tsos. They will make it spicy if you request it which is always nice. They also deliver and do take-out, which is pretty nice and beats just having Pizza as a delivery option. Wish I could give it 3.5 stars.

Fairly normal white trash chinese food. Tasted well and was super spicey to my request. Seedy bar attached to the other end though. Price was cheap for the amount of food we received.

Ok, let's get down to business and get a real review on the food here. Despite the dilapidated 1970's exterior, the food is surprisingly good, with one exception. Don't quote me on this, but I'm almost certain their deep fryer is a septic tank filled with oil discarded from the local burger king, taco bell, Wendy's, mcdonalds, and whatever fast food joint I may have forgotten - eeks! I felt my arteries clog up in one single whiff of the crab puffs. So really, if you want to eat here, make sure the food you eat doesn't go anywhere near the fryer! Again, otherwise, the food was surprisingly decent and a sure way to induce a food coma.

After looking at other reviews, the last time anyone commented on this place was in 2008. Unfortunately I think things have changed for this restaurant and not for the good. We were the only people eating in the restaurant - there seemed to be more people picking up their food than dining in. The two waitresses spent more time on the phone than they did us... we were out of tea and instead of a refill she gave us our check. I think the best time we had was readying the Chinese Zodiac... the sheep will bring trouble.

Hands down the best Chinese food in Salem. I can't speak for the Dim Sum that the previous reviewer seems to be referring to (though I do plan on enjoying it in the very near future), but the dinner and lunch are fantastic. I would HIGHLY recommend you try the following dishes: Crispy Eggplant with Tangy Sauce Chinese Mushrooms in Garlic Sauce In case you can't tell, I'm a vegetarian. While they don't have a LOT of options, the ones they do are actually quite good. I've had their non-vegetarian fare too back before my current state of eating, and even then, I was very impressed. Best sweet and sour anything I've found. The service is fantastic, too. Some of the waitresses don't speak English very well at all and can make ordering difficult, but it's only really been a problem for me once. They're all extremely friendly, and the owner now refers to me as the one who loves the crispy eggplant. All in all, highly recommended.

This place is awesome! The crabpuffs(crab rangoon or creamcheese and crab wontons to some people) are a must do on the menu! Dont forget to ask for sweet and sour sauce to dip them in - the red sauce they serve them with is ok but i do not prefer it. All of their food i have had is fantastic. The place is a little run down and all but the food more than makes up for it. Try the paperwrap chicken, mandorin chicken, seaseme chicken, and dip some wontons in sweet and sour too!

Try their dim sum! This restaurant is a hidden, sleepy little gem in Salem, OR. My husband and I are from Idaho and no one serves dim dum in the state of Idaho (very disappointing). Every time we travel through Salem, we make it a point to stop in for their dim sum to get our dim sum fix. Hong Kong House has fantastic dim sum! Fresh, hot, tasty, perfect dumplings and dim sum dishes. The ingredients are so fresh and everything is hand made upon ordering. Salem's best kept secret! Service is excellent and the prices are very reasonable! Hong Kong House is a must if you like dim sum.
