Can I give it 0 stars? Do not EVER eat here. The salsa has no taste, the guacamole is from Safeway, the waitress didn't ask if we wanted drinks, and does not talk to the customers except to ask their order, the decor is tacky, no offer to refill chips, and this $6.50 margarita has about $2.00 worth of tequila in it. This is mexican food? No. This is an insult to real mexican food.

We have been coming here for years and years. Now that we live in Bend we don't get to come as often as we'd like. But we always make a point to stop when we are on this side of the mountains. Their homemade flour tortillas are sooo good. And there is something sooo delicious about their salsa we always end up going through at least 3 bowls. So fresh...not like the typical restaurant salsa. The food is great, and we always take a couple of pints of salsa a bag of their tortilla chips and at least a dozen of their flour tortillas. We get them uncooked and cook them up at home on a pan or griddle til they are a little brown. You can get their "gravy" on the side to pour over a burrito or on your tostada! Delish!

Oh man, my boss brought me here. I loved it! I loved the salsa and chips we got when we came in (even though the salsa was a bit spicy, my boss said it normally isn't that hot). I ordered the Nacho's and it wasn't really a normal Nacho. The plate wasn't stacked real high with chips and then everything underneath was naked. Instead they made a nice single layer of chips and loaded the toppings onto those chips including huge chunks of delicious Steak (Beef). My boss got the burrito, that looked really good too! I'm coming back real soon!

Have to go middle of the road on rating this oldest of the Mexican food Establishments in Salem. Only due to their consistency of being inconsistent, that is their only consistency? Sometimes good, other times not so much. But when they are on, this food is the bomb diggity ticket! Their house salsa is the freshest in the area, coupled with great on site made chips "I think? I mean they sure do appear to be." My favorite dish is the pork carnitas. They are hard to find in town, so your options are limited. But they are good here if you love your pork like I do. The frijoles are dry and salty, almost like they were overcooked. Definitely worth a try if you are a gambler. On a final note, I got a case of Montezuma's revenge after my last visit, I mean bad! But, this can happen anywhere at any given time. Hey, shit happens right?

Loved my meal, had the chimi changa and it was great, my wife got the carne asada, and it was awesome. Service was great, salsa was not as spicy as I wanted and they made some that was spicier. Great experience!

It's a bummer that their prices just keep going up, up, up. Their salsa is wonderful. Their food is consistent - the beef chimichangas, beef tacos, and beef fajitas are yummy. The chile rellenos are awful. Their tamales are all masa. I can't detect any booze in their margaritas. Their service isn't anything to write home about, but it's passable. We would go more often, but its just gotten too expensive for what it is - not spectacular, but consistent and good depending on what you order.

I have driven by this restaurant many times so I thought I would give it a try. Well..it was very disappointing. We were.promptly seated and asked if we wanted.something to drink.so that was good since it semed.a.problem in some reviews. The waiter was very nice and service was good. Chips and salsa were brought out quickly...Our order came out in reasonable time and was accompanied by flour tortillas. It was a surprise since in most Mexicans restaurants in Salem you have to order tortillas.. Okay..so far so good My order of a chicken enchilada.and pork tamale.with rice and beans.was a nice portion of food however.the chef must have forgotten about seasoning because it was very bland I used some of the salsa but the salsa didn't have much flavor....if it was fresh then the tomatoes were not ripe and it was very mild..no hot sauce available on the table..the mild orange colored.sauce that covered the enchilada.and tamale didn't help.the flavor of the dish..the chef does not have a good palate. The people who think this food is good authentic Mexican food don't know what good authentic Mexican food tastes.like. If you want good Mexican food don't bother coming here. They really need a new chef. I gave the rating of two stars for the service and the music on the radio in the background... not for the food.

My daughter and I stopped in for dinner on a weeknight. Once seated, we sat and waited for 10 minutes for someone to take our order. I noticed the owner and a waiter talking up front, totally ignoring us. I waved them over. The waiter came and took our order. We had to ask for drinks as there was no offer. We ordered the steak fajitas to share. Once they came out, the looked very fresh and tasted great. The only problem is that they only bought two tortillas. Now we usually tear ours in half when we eat anyways, but I had to order some additional totillas. Again, I had to get someones attention by waving them over. When were were finished we sat for another 15 minutes before my daughter went up and asked for our check and a box. All in all I was not impressed with the service, or lack of, and I probably will not return.

We stopped in for dinner last week. The seats are roomy, and we got seated right away. We ordered a three meat burrito, and a variety plate which was supposed to have a chicken tamale. They gave me a pork tamale, with a spoonful of chicken on top of it. The tortilla chips smelled stale, and they charge way too much for add ons for your meal. For example, sour cream.. A dollup is 1.75... really? The food came pretty quickly, less then 5 minutes. Which tells me that most of it was premade, and just warmed up. The enchilada sauce tastes like it was in a can, it has the whole chef boyarrdie, pack full of preservatives flavor to it. Hubby said his food tasted pretty plain, but had to stop eating it when he found a moldy piece in his burrito. We won't be back. Ever.

I love going to Casa Baez. They make the Wally burrito that is incredible. It is everything you could ever want all rolled up in a soft delicious tortilla. The guacamole is terrific and flavorful. I enjoy seeing Gerardo's smiling face every time I walk through the double wooden doors. I can't get enough of Salem Oregon's Casa Baez!!

When you order and your meal comes out in 2 minutes, you know your eating at a glorified cafeteria. And in accordance with cafeteria standards--the food was bland and monotonous. However, the service was pleasant and the hand-made flour tortillas were amazing! I'd consider ordering the tortillas for any cooking I do at home, but...that's about it.

Like I said on Los Baez's review....LOVE their house made flour tortillas/chips/salsa/and their re-fried beans are AMAZING!! But then again, I prefer the thick beans as opposed to the watery ones. Been going here since I was a little kid and I try to make it there every time I go to Salem. Yummy!! This location has done some remodeling and has brightened it up a bit, huge improvement. :-) Never had a problem with the staff, but most of them know me by now.

Casa Baez is an excellent Mexican restaurant located right on Lancaster Drive in Salem. The atmosphere is spacious and comfortable. The service is friendly and attentive. The servers do all they can to make sure you have enough tortillas and salsa. The tortillas are homemade at Casa Baez which makes all the difference in the taste of their dishes. The real strength of Casa Baez is their menu. Casa Baez offers a large and well organized menu. The menu allows customers to customize their own Mexican combinations or chose from among Casa Baez's own imaginative combinations. For example there is a "chicken combination" which consists of classic Mexican dishes all cooked with chicken. However, the menu at Casa Baez is not just limited to combinations. There are many entrees to chose from. Casa Baez is vegetarian friendly and offers quite a few all vegetable dishes. There is something for most any lover of great homemade Mexican food at Casa Baez in Salem, Oregon.

This one is a tasty restaurant. Normally, a very good place to go. The last time I was there, however, they took our order and we were drinking sodas and eating chips. Pretty soon we began to notice that people who came in after us had, eaten and were leaving and we were still sitting there. It was then, when the wait staff seem to notice too, they didn't say anything to us but kept looking our way in a concerned manner. It must have sparked them to turn in our order as shortly after that little awkward incident our food arrived. It was great but after eating that many chips we boxed it and got the hell out of there. I might try it again but I'm reticent.

30+ years of eating here and still my favorite. The cubed beef and the gravy is incredible not to mention tortillas. Service is always good and atmosphere is nice. Restrooms could use some updating.

Food was ordinary, until I bit into something hard. It was a plastic closure commonly used on bags of lettuce. I showed it to the waiter when he picked up my plate and the only thing he asked "Was it on the inside or outside?". That's all. No apology. I expected at least a simple I'm sorry when we checked out, but nothing. I wasn't looking for a free meal but was put off by their attitude.

Decent Mexican food at a so-so price. I get an odd combination when I go. Flour tortillas, a scoop of rice, beans and a side of gravy for dipping. The beans vary, but I like them when they are prepared properly. And the rice is very good. Other places have bland, flavorless rice but this is by far my favorite. The chips and tortillas are very tasty. They are home made and are always hot when we get them, but the salsa varies. A lot. Some days it's very watery and flavorless, and others it's on the verge of unbearably spicy for me and I chug half of my water before my order is taken. It's rare to get that perfect bowl of salsa and should be treasured when you get it. I personally don't care for the meat here The chicken is sometimes grey, oddly textured and flavorless (which seems to be a common theme here). I got a chicken chimichanga last time I had eaten here and it was almost inedible. But my mother seems to enjoy the chicken enchiladas. The price seems to be a bit much though. $9 for a bean burrito? Oh dear. My family are considered as regulars/ friends and are always greeted by the owner with a smile and promptly led to a table. I have been coming here for about 10 years and I don't think I've ever had to wait a second to be seated. I see some of the other people who have reviewed here have had to wait a while for service/food. I've never experienced anything of that sort so I'm hoping it was just a one time thing for you. :)

My wife, kids, grand-kids and friends have been eating here for 25 plus years. Rarely do we have to wait for a seat, and the food is brought to us shortly after ordering. We are on first name bases with the owner and most of the long time servers. They will always ask my wife if she wants some fresh coffee. The food is our favorite in all of this area. I don't know who this "Jeff J" guy is, but he either just simply did not like the style of food, or as one other reviewer said, from another establishment. Why someone would be that mean and rude seems suspicious to me. This is a family owned business and has been here for over 30 years. Who else can say that.

I like this restaurant. They once again have the number one combination, which is incredible, including a taco, chili relleno, enchilada, chili verde and chili colorado. with beans, rice and handmade flour tortillas. Overall, this restaurant has very good food...excellent chips and fresh salsa. I do suggest including guacamole as a side with the #1-to perfect the taco. They will provide additional HAND MADE flour tortillas on request. I generally whip up a couple of burritos for the road, since the #1 is overwhelming. They also have a decent beer selection including Bohemia. Currently, 1/2 price on the weekends. They have a second restaurant in Salem and another in Roseburg. They are very comparable in consistency. They also have a flat screen tv in the back dining room in case you happen to be there during a game etc. Lastly, I have to say that jeff j's review appears to be written by a competitor or a complete d.b., since it is patently false. I hope that jeff j goes back to DC, (well known for the finest Mexican food), since Oregon wants to abort him!

Our family has been (intermittently) visiting Los Baez restaurants in Tigard, Salem, and Eugene for over 15 years. Los Baez, Titos, and now Casa Baez still provide the key items that will keep us coming back for years to come: tasty salsa, homemade, to-die-for tortillas, tender shredded beef (think enchiladas), and friendly service. I took my uncle in on a Saturday around 4pm a couple of weeks ago (having not been in for 4 years), and we were treated like royalty. The manager seemed genuinely interested in our satisfaction, the food arrived less than 10 minutes after ordering, and the tortillas.... ah, the tortillas. I actually would go there to eat just the tortillas - plain. They are that good. Suffice it to say I was comforted to find the expected high quality food, surprised by the speed of service and appreciative of the attention paid to us. And to any naysayers who might think we must have been dressed nice, or spent a lot of money, or been Latino, etc - nope. So, if you have had a bad experience here - I am surprised, sad, and would strongly urge you to give it another try. If you've never been - go! You won't regret it.

Casa Baez is not worth eating at under any circumstances. There are quite a few mexican restaurants in Salem and this one is the one to avoid. I went here with my wife one day because we were both craving mexican food and we saw the sign while driving on Lancaster. The restaurant is very spacious and the booths are comfortable but that is where the pleasantries stop. The menu has quite a few options however they are all WAY OVERPRICED for mexican food. I moved to Salem from Washington, D.C. and noticed that Casa Baez prices are more expensive than any mexican restaurant I went to in D.C.(thinking about cost of living)!! Not to mention more expensive than anywhere else in Salem! On to the food... the chips were cold and the salsa was bland - which might be a plus for those who do not like spicy salsa. I ordered a carne asada burrito (my wife is a vegetarian and I was craving steak) and have never been more offended from food than I was here. First impression, decent sized burrito but not worth $14 - is any burrito worth $14?? The burrito was packed full of onions and little else, which is not necessarily a problem except that I ordered a carne asada burrito. The "carne asada" they served in the burrito was scarce and tasted as if it had been cooked a few days prior and had been frozen. I thought I was getting freshly grilled steak, much like you'd get when ordering fajitas but it wasn't even remotely close. I don't consider myself to have a gourmet palate and sometimes wonder how chefs can discern fresh from frozen, but there was no guessing here. I should have known the place was bad as I've never seen more than 3 cars in the parking lot. Don't waste your time going here, there are plenty of mexican restaurants in Salem to choose from.

Decent food and excellent service. We got the fajita for two with a mix of beef and chicken. The chicken and beef were about average but the overall dish didn't offer enough spice and flavor. The salsa was ok but the chips were pretty good. Overall, it's decent food that's a bit over priced.

Good food? Who knows. We came in at 5 pm, thinking we had plenty of time to make a 6 pm meeting. Mexican food - what could go wrong? There was hardly anyone in the restaurant, and at least two servers. No problem, right. WRONG. 35 minutes later the waitress tells us our meals will be right out. "We only have one cook tonight, the other didn't show." 15 minutes later, still no food. When we ask a different waitress, she tells us they are just starting to cook our meal. We get the manager. Tell him we have to be at a meeting in fifteen minutes, and if the food does not come out in 3 minutes we will be forced to leave. 3 minutes pass, we get up to leave. Do we get an apology? An offer to buy us our drinks and guacamole, anything? NO. We get a rude guy demanding we pay for our one drink and bowl of dip. This place has zero idea what customer service means. They could have at least told us when we walked in that they were down a cook and to expect a wait.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
