High Cholesterol at Whataburger

Calorie intake is the main concern for people with high cholesterol while dining at a fast-food restaurant like Whataburger. Well, you can always try the Lighter & Smaller options from the menu to cut down your fat intake. Opting for grilled sandwich or burgers are preferred compared to double meat or triple meat cheesy burgers which contain high cholesterol.

Foods to Avoid at Whataburger for High Cholesterol

Cut down on your meat intake to control your high cholesterol. You must skip Double Meat Whataburger and Triple Meat Whataburger at all costs. Whatacatch Dinner may sound tempting but the famous fish sandwich is also full of calories and unhealthy fat. Lastly, avoid French Fries and Onion Rings at Whataburger if you are already ordering a burger or any other heavy meal.

Nothing irks me more than bad customer service. As a paying customer, to be ignored or treated rudely, is the worst possible thing and will surely cause the loss of my business, no matter how good the food is. This is my first time at the Burger Basket, and my last. I went to the drive-thru at noon. There were no cars ahead of me. I could see the cashier inside. She saw me sitting there at the ordering window for 5 minutes. No acknowledgment that I was there. No greeting. Nothing. I went to the pickup window, thinking maybe I had the wrong window, sat there for a few minutes. Cashier inside saw me. Nothing. Went back around to the original window. Same thing again. I guess they don't want my business. I won't be back ever again. I will stick to Nancy's.

It's hilarious to me that this place got ranked less because it doesn't accept credit cards and that the decor is outdated.. HAHA! Seriously?? Call me crazy but I don't go to a place called "Burger Basket" for the decor. Stepping into the place, how could you even be that surprised that it doesn't accept credit? OK, stepping off of my soapbox.. Portions are large. As an insatiably hungry pregnant lady, the "small" burger was more than sufficient. Split an order of large curly fries with my husband. Initially didn't think that we would make a dent in this mountain but underestimated their deliciousness because the fries were quickly gobbled up. All in all, this was a great burger joint. But if you like froufrou burger places, you should do yourself a favor and go elsewhere.

I have eaten here many times over the years, as I work nearby. It seems every time I come here it gets a little more... lacking. The portions have dwindled from a huge burger and a pile of tater tots to a pathetic, charred, yet greasy thin pressed hockey puck and roughly 15 tots. The sauce is still good, and overall the burgers taste alright for what they are. What sealed the deal for me tonight was the ketchup. When you leave ketchup on the table from open to close everyday, and dump more into the bottles each night, on top of the old, you're basically serving rotting ketchup. The ketchup was fermented. I discovered this after my son squirted it all over his burger. While his 8-year-old tastebuds didn't detect the soured taste, I truly hope he doesn't end up sick. We arrived about a half an hour before closing, and before we were finished eating, they shut the dining room lights off, leaving us in the dark. I had enough, and we left without a word.

Unfriendly customer service is right. I went through the drive thru late one afternoon, just for a milkshake. There was no one in the restaurant or drive thru at this time. I tried to make small talk and be friendly with the older woman who took my order but she was not having it. As she was handing over my milkshake, I smiled and jokingly said "guess I should have pulled up a little more" since I had to stretch for it. She glared at me and grunted, yeah. This was the extent of our communication. If you are that unhappy with your job, why stay?

It's a guilty pleasure, a gut bomb, a shot of good old America cholesterol. It is what it is! So if you want your tofu and cous cous after your hot yoga session, this Salem landmark is not for you! And us carnivores like it that way. Bring cash, they do not deal in plastic, and I don't blame them these days!

  • IdaMarie D.

What used to be an icon is no longer. Yesterday, the rude dark haired woman who continually slammed the drive through window in my face convinced me of the fact. Our order was wrong. She grabbed the fries out of my hand, slammed the window and didnt return. When she did come back, I told her now our burgers r cold, this wasnt what we expected from the Burger Basket. She said she didnt care and told us to go... As she pointed to cars behind us. Our supposed curly fries, we had waited for were cold and greasy... Tiny pieces.. Looked like they had taken them from cleaning tables. Ugghhh. The time before we went in and the flies were everywhere, we got none of the friendly service we had read about. I WONDER... HAS THE OWNER MANAGEMENT CHANGED? I wouldnt give thier food to my door!! We are done, save yourself... drive on.

If you're looking for a great burger joint, the burger basket makes a fantastic burger. It's simple and classic. The meat is fresh and formed each day. The tots are the best in town. They'll make you a shake right there on the spot. They're cash only- get over it.

    (5)
  • Georgia May G.

Good hamburgers! You can taste the quality, just wish they had a medium sized burger instead of small, large and extra large. The tots taste good too.

  • Fawn R.

This would be my favorite burger in Salem if they just used salt. Their neat is delicious and they have great onion rings but their curly fries sick. And service at this place is terrible. I love right by it and I have never had anyone but the owner treat me with any kind of respect. The ladies behind the counter are always slow, rude, and sometimes down right nasty. I always get my food to go because it's never really clean inside. The fake decore usually has food, grease and other little pieces of gross on it. Bring cash because they don't accept cards and the atm costs 5 bucks. It really does need some tlc. I'd frequent me often off want concerned with cleanliness and crappy service.

Stopped in here on my way back to Portland. They have a sign for drive-thru so I tried that... I stopped at a window that seemed to be the right spot and began looking over the menu. After about 5 minutes of waiting I peered into the window and gave a little wave to the girl at the counter. She kind of just glared back and ignored me. Giving the benefit of the doubt and assuming they were too short on staff to handle a drive thru line( there were a good amount of people inside), I pulled around and went inside. I shouldn't have wasted my time. The place was depressingly unclean and just sad. The staff was less than enthusiastic, borderline rude, and even the customers seemed ashamed to be in there. Because I just needed a quick meal for the road, I tried to order a fish sandwich. I didn't even get that far because they don't accept cards. Can someone say tax evasion? This is the only reason I can think of why a business wouldn't accept plastic! Well I left after that and thank God because I probably would have gotten sick. :( Step up your game Burger Basket.

  • Rebecca W.

Food was good ..there are no signs for cash only..many patrons getting cash out of the atm..what a rip...then after you have spent money eating and paying to get money out of the atm they want to charge you 29 cents for a cup of water to go...never again

This place is awesome. It's unique, has delicious food, great service and puts you in a happy food coma. I got the cheeseburger with cheese fries and a caramel butterscotch milkshake. You seriously can't go wrong with what I ordered. Unless of course you don't like cheese fries. The lady that took my order was so sweet and made sure our food was perfect and to our liking. I was in heaven and could have eaten more if I wasn't so full. I don't live in Salem, but if I wanted to get this meal again (which I have been all the time) I'll make the trip to Salem for a repeat of this meal.

  • Laura S.

So I've eaten here a handful of times, mostly when I have actual cash (they do not take credit cards) and happen to be on the right side of the street to get in. I have only ordered the bacon-cheeseburger and fries, the price of the meal is a little more expensive than average take-out fare. The burgers are alright. Handpressed, lopsided, greasy as all get out, but pretty tasty. The fries are a little lacking. They remind me of the fries at Red Robin, but not as cooked. The drive through can be a real hassle. Because they "hand make" every burger, it tends to take about three times as long as a normal drive though, so be prepared. I have never been inside, but every time I get in line there seems to be at least a handful of cars in the parking lot and customers seated at the windows. I'll still probably wind up here once or twice a year, when the craving for a really greasy burger hits me.

Ate there last month, great regular burger, fries very ordinary, friendly staff. Went there Sat, 9/13/14. I was looking forward to a giant hamburger this time, advertised 1/2 pound meat, What a disappointment. We ordered two regular burgers and one giant. When they came I could not tell the giant from the regular. I asked the waitress which is the giant, she snapped, the one in front of you. I swear, mine had no more meat than the regular and either the cook screwed up or it is a scam, doubt I'll ever go back as we have far better burger places in Bend, Oregon.

  • Jacqueline H.

Awful. Terrible. We were 3 of 5 customers In the restaurant 2 hours before closing. The owner and (assuming) his wife were less than enthusiastic to help us. He did proclaim everything was fresh and delicious. It was the opposite. Their chicken breast sandwich was basically a McChicken if not worse. The owner, his wife (?) & the cook sat at a table and talked about how Obama is a nigger and everything was better before Obama Care etc... Seriously disappointed with the experience. I would never recommend eating here!

By far the best burger on the planet. Any of you idiots posting bad reviews about this place are expecting a high dollar restaurant. It's fresh meat, fresh fries, great portions. If you don't have cash on you your an idiot you should always have a little cash on you. I love this place and have never had a better burger hands down. Anyone I've brought here is hooked for life. My friend in florida begs me to send him burgers in the mail

If you like burgers, shakes, and fries, then you'll love Burger Basket. They also have an assortment of other sandwiches and offerings. Most of which are very good. This is by far one of the better places to get a burger in the salem area. And at some of the best prices. Hand made patties, hand cut fries, and old school decor. What could be better. And they're open til ten so stop going to Mc d or to bk when you get late night burger munchies. You'll thank yourself in the morning. I'm sure the negative reviews have come from people who think red robin or applebees make the best burger. This place is good. Enough said.

Thank you, Burger Basket. Thank you. Thank you so much for not taking credit cards. Upon entering a swarm of flies was having a mixer in the middle of the restaurant. Kind of gross but I wouldn't have given up on the restaurant on that alone. The place looks like it hasn't been updated in 30 years. There was no music playing. It just seemed, I dunno, like a restaurant waiting to die or relive the glory days. I ordered a burger and fries but I was wanting to leave more and more by the moment. The lady at the counter asked me a bunch of questions "1/4 pound? 1/3 pound? Half pound?" "Lettuce?", "Tomato?", "Thousand Island?" This burger order was turning into twenty questions. How about "What would you like on that" instead of this madness? I'm thirty two years old, I'm pretty set in my ways on burger toppings at this juncture of my life. I pulled out my credit card and was told they don't take credit but I could use the ATM machine in the corner of the place. I told the lady I wasn't going to pay an ATM fee for a $7 lunch. She said she'd take $2 off my order. I told her "No thanks" and left. What is with these weird business owners that don't want to take credit. They don't want to pay a 35 cent fee per transaction but they'll take $2 off my order? They'll risk alienating younger consumers who live on plastic so they can, do what, exactly? Save $60 a month? Insanity. Any good business owner takes plastic because we young'ns don't carry paper. I didn't eat the food. I didn't buy anything. I'm confident enough in my assumption of the place to give it one star. Maybe their food is out of this world, but I doubt it. One star for flies, lack of credit card machine, apathetic service, lack of updating, etc.

Clean, independent, big menu of fast food. Perfectly eatable. Cheap. Waitress speaks Russian, English, Spanish, and entirely likely more.

    (4)
  • Roger T.

Way over priced! Don't know why they don't take plastic! Cash only! More durty tables than clean. Dont think they believe in seasoning anything. Burger was original but the rest of their huge menu is your norm frozen out box versions of meals. And the flies, oh wow the flies. Be prepared to fight them off with whatever you got they are relentless! I really do want to like this place but ugh! Frustrating to say the least!

  • Kevin M.

Not gourmet, but good. With fresh burgers, plump fries and creamy shakes (cherry chocolate ftw) all starting at under $3, expect accordingly, and expect to be satisfied. The sights, smells and sounds harken back to '70s, which seems fitting for Salem. Not a tip jar to be found yet the friendly staff delivers your food and busses your table. No complaints.

  • Erin H.

If you love greasy, flavorless burgers, undercooked fries, and the fact that you can't use your debit card, then you'll love this place. You'll also love it if you enjoy sticky tables, unfriendly cashiers, and really bad milkshakes. I guess it's worth trying once. I mean, not EVERYone hates it. But hey, millions of Americans love McDonalds too, so what do I know?

I used to eat here occasionally about a decade ago. It's been awhile. I always liked their burgers and fries. Nothing fancy, but good food. When I went online to find their hours, I was surprised at all the bad reviews. After that I really felt compelled to go and do my own review. The first thing I noticed when walked in was a number of flies hovering in the middle of the room. Made me cautious about swallowing one as I made my way to the counter. After ordering, I looked around and noticed at least a half-dozen tables that needed clearing. Finding a clean one to sit at was harder than it should have been. These tables remained uncleared for the majority of my visit. They seemed busier than normal. They also appeared to be short-staffed, with only one person manning the counter, the drive through, and the dining area. I ordered a "giant" burger (1/2 pound) and fries. My food was ready in a reasonable amount of time. The fries were not as hot as I would have liked. But the burger was great, just as I remembered them. These burgers have a very homemade taste which is still with me an hour later as I write this. Someone else said in a review that the food was greasy. But they said that as if it was a negative thing. I think it's a valid component in the homemade taste when you're talking a burger and fries. I will go back. These burgers are somewhat unique. It's worth putting up with the small negatives that I encountered. And I figure if I had caught them at a less busy time, things would have probably been different. Keep in mind they do not take plastic. So bring cash.

This place is a joke... 10 dollars for a 25 minute fiasco in the drive through. Fries were mushy and sans salt. Hotdog fell apart .... Coke was regular and not diet. Cheeseburger order was wrong. So disappointing. Shame on me for being lazy and not wanting to turn left on mission to the DQ. I was so hopeful for potential.

Delicious chicken strips, and tater tots! The chicken strips are so flavorful and seasoned so I recommend that if you're not a burger person like me. I have also tried their chocolate shakes and they are yummy. The only downfall is the "cash only" policy. They do however have an ATM. Also, the ketchup tastes weird and 'vinegary' if that makes sense..other than that its a great place to eat with the family. It's like a high end fast food joint where everything tastes fresh and you DON'T have to wait an hour to get your food.

  • Mira N.

The burgers are less than memorable. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about the curly fries -- quite possibly the worst I've ever had (both times I've tried them). As if the soggy, unsalted poor excuse for a carb wasn't bad enough, they charge $0.75 for a small container (couple tablespoons maybe) of fry sauce. I took the fries home, added some cajun spice and salt and broiled them, but they were still lousy. The burger was just OK - sloppily put together with less than quality ingredients. I'd like to be able to recommend this place as a decent alternative to fast food -- alas, I cannot. You're better off heading across the street to Carl's Jr.

  • Jando S.

This place is one of the most popular places in Salem, yet one of the most unnoticed because its not your traditional fast food / hamburger spot. As a family owned and operated / mom & pop business, it doesn't have the dazzle or the appeal to rope people in. What does bring people in however is their delicious burgers. They're large and can be customized in a variety of ways -- with all the essentials, even an over easy egg or sauces. The milk shakes are rather large, full of ice cream and flavor. Not the fanciest place ever and they only accept cash.

    (4)
  • Alex R.

Good, simple burger. Curly fries are the type you would find at a fair.

  • heather d.

If you are in Salem, GO HERE!! In my opinion this is the perfect All-American burger. Fresh, simple and yummy. I loved the fries too, but I had to take away a star for the ridiculous 75 cent charge for the tiny side of fry sauce or ranch -- like 2 Tablespoons, tops.

  • Mark B.

I'll give Burger Basket four stars, but I am being a little charitable. I almost give them three due to consistency issues. When Burger Basket kicks out a good burger, it's very good. The patty is probably hand made and has a nice texture. I've also had mediocre burgers from them. If you plan to try Burger Basket, you might want to try them at least twice. More often than not, the burgers are excellent with an occasional miss. The french fries are average and maybe a little mushy. Burger Basket's dining environment improved greatly when it went smoke-free several years ago.
