Diabetics at Village Inn

Village Inn is a tough place for diabetics, and you must be extra cautious while ordering food at the Village Inn, especially if you're a diabetic. The food items low in sodium are high in sugar or cholesterol at Village Inn which makes it difficult for diabetics to choose the right food at the diner.

You must also skip the shakes as well as other juices from the beverage menu. Almost all the dinner items on the menu are high in sodium except Grilled Tilapia and 6 oz. Top Sirloin & Toast. Village Hut, oh how I wish I knew about you long ago. Everything is fresh and expertly prepared. These are gourmet, healthy bentos. If you're looking for a heavy, teriyaki bowl, Village Hut is not for you. Daily there is a choice of chicken, or pork. There are 5 + daily specials depending on what the owner gets from the market that morning. Great fresh seafood options, and meat options like filet mignon, or lamb. The proteins are grilled, and served over a bed of Jasmine, or Brown Rice. There is a fantastic Asian slaw on the side, and some fruit for desert. The owner is super friendly. The menu changes daily, so there is no menu listed online. Call in for the daily specials :).

You need to be in the mood for non traditional seating. It has the vibe of a BBQ joint in Texas Cool, funky place. Looks very much like an agricultural outbuilding. Very cute weird little local place. The food is a selection of rice bowls made with mostly-locally sourced meats and seafood. I had their seafood combo, which was quite good. wife had BBQed tri tip and liked it. kids had pork, also BBQed. I sampled everything and I liked it all. A decent go to place. Especially if you're in the 'hood and hungry.

Always a friendly and delicious time, with amazing fresh fish options. Might not be ideal for dine-in lunch on a hot day, then you get takeout.

  • Jenn W.

The owner is friendly and prides himself in using fresh and local ingredients. I had the fish of the day with veggies and rice. All were cooked perfectly and I appreciated the minimal seasoning on the very fresh fish. I will definitely be going back!

Stopped in for lunch. Place is funky and small. Ordered seafood combo - salmon, shrimp and halibut on a bed of rice, plus coleslaw and small piece of watermelon. $14. Food was delicious, fresh, and hit the spot. Proportions were not huge, but for the price it was ok. I will definitely go back for the seafood and also to try some of the other items on the menu (ribs, chicken).

  • B. W.

The ribs were a tragedy. Microwaved before served, not cooked long enough, rubbery, flavorless, no smoke, the membrane was on the back, they were not cut all the way through which made it very hard to separate them because they were so tough. The bbq sauce was pretty good thankfully, because I couldn't have gotten those ribs down without it. BBQ is a sacred thing and this was a sad experience. The slaw was meh the watermelon was fresh the rice was rice. Hopefully the other proteins are better. On a high note they were very nice and the service was pretty good.

What a cute awesome little place. Lots of sitting areas indoors and out. Had a lovely Columbia sockeye bento box. Perfect portion for me, though some might like more--it was truly healthy. Tasty veggies (I would have liked more of those and less of the rice), friendly owner/chef, a nice chewy short grain brown rice. I'm sort of torn on the stars, because of how others read this stuff. It's simple food done nicely, and on that scale, I'd probably give it another half star. Give it a try, you'll enjoy the food and the vibe.

Dog friendly tables outside and good food! It takes a little time if you just show up and order, about 15-20 to get your meal. But it's cozy and the staff is very nice (it was the owner I think), they even gave my pooch a little chicken and rice :) The food is very good, I like the organic tofu, tri tip and the seared tuna, all which come with stir fry veggies. Good daily specials too, usually wild fish or special pork that I think they smoke on the premises but I'm not sure on that. It's hard to find well sourced healthy and delicious food on the west side, but these guys do it up proper!

A Multnomah Village favorite for grab-and-go dinners. When I walked in the first time, I was welcomed to the "smallest sports bar in Portland, or so I'm told" by one of the regulars. With four indoor stools for diners, I think he may be right. Both my husband and I are big fans of their healthy bento meals. It is actually the best meal I've had in Multnomah Village and the one that makes me feel good after dining. Portions are not oversized and they've nailed that magical combination of healthy and delicious. The basis of the bento meals are high quality meat and fish options, although tofu and chicken are offered ( thehutpdx.com/menu ). I can't pass up the lamb when it is on the specials menu and Mr. K is a tri-tip man. Your choice of white or brown rice and the vegetables remain crisp (not overcooked) and I love the kick of their special sauce. Although you have to wait a bit for your food, I consider this a good thing. Beer and wine are served and I don't mind passing the time watching and talking football with the owner and staff. I realize that $12 for bento is a bit pricy, but it doesn't seem outrageous considering the quality of the meal.

The positive reviews here are baffling... I was warned by countless people not to ever go to the Village Hut because it was, in their words, "literally the worst food in Portland!" but I'm not that much of a food snob and thought people were simply exaggerating... boy was I wrong! First, it is a cute place, and walking distance to where I live, so I was actually excited about this. When I went in, it was not crowded, only one person there, a friend of the owner, and the owner himself behind the counter. I ordered the Wild Alaskan Salmon bento with brown rice. The first warning sign should have been when I saw him take out the frozen piece of a salmon and take it into the back patio, where they have the microwave! After about 10 minutes he then asked again, "what kind of rice, white or brown?" I said brown and he whipped that up in 60 seconds, threw the microwaved salmon - that was "cooked" barely to room temperature and completely dried out - on with two rotten apple wedges and a dash of flavorless cole slaw... Worst food I've EVER had in Portland! Seriously. Having to give it at least one star is more than the Village Hut deserves... Portland is supposed to be a foodie town, so how anyone could make such dreadful microwaved crap here (and charge $14 for it!?) and still stay in business is beyond me, but I will never be going back to Village Hut again! And that makes me sad, as I was really hoping to find a cool little place within walking distance that I could enjoy. I should have heeded the warnings though, and SO SHOULD YOU!

I've been living in this country for 3 years, and "Village Hut" definitely gave me the worst food cart experience I have ever had! I spoke English slowly and politely to her, and the young blonde girl who working here speak to me with obvious disgust and angry face. After I said "for here please" to her, she said "go sit down!" just like she is training a dog! I ordered wild salmon plate. She didn't cook the salmon, but used the microwave instead. The inside of that tiny piece of salmon is still cold, so does the brown rice. I found several fishbones in that fishy salmon. The side fruit- one piece apple wedge is not fresh too. Its surface was brown and soaked ...that nightmare meal cost me $14. Almost twice as expensive as a normal food truck. I controlled my temper, paid, smiled and left. I found she is more polite when she is talking to English-speaking costumer. I'm not sure about whether she used microwave to heat the not fresh salmon and overcharge me because I'm a foreigner. I'm 7 months pregnant, and feel stomachache after eating at "village hut". I hope my stomach hurts is because the food was cold instead of the bacteria in that fishy salmon..."Toxoplasma" can hurts the baby badly....oh...I don't know why I entered that hellish place...

Delicious, healthy food. The owner is awesome. We had such a nice night eating in their fireplace nook and even felt great after our dinner out because of the wholesome food.

3 things that surprised us: the unique seating, the evident good humor, the cozy hospitality. We were a group of six , disparate ages and backgrounds negotiating some tricky relationships. The owner was wonderfully accommodating, the vibes were good. We would have been happy to pay twice for the magical evening, a tribute to what the right setting and good food and gracious atmosphere can make happen.

I have been contemplating going here for a while and I'm definitely glad I finally did! My fiancé and I both got the chicken bento and it was amazing! The lunch size was just enough and only $6 but next time I will get a bigger six just so I can have left overs

They have amazing seafood, bento meals, and beer on tap. My vegan friend comes here with me and always can get something made for her. The seating outside is dog friendly, and so are the owners. I live within walking distance and go here as often as I can.

It's like a big food cart. Fun little Multnomah Village location. The interior is small and quaint with a comparable patio. You cannot be in a hurry. The order is taken and prepped by one person, who is running the show. She was reportedly a little flurried due to a previous customer. Super busy little place. No doubt about that. People like it here. The food is great. Fresh and yummy. Smaller portions than I would like. I guess we should all eat less. :D

This place is brilliant. I just moved across the country, and have never felt so welcomed. Both the owner of this tiny hut, J, as well as a regular there made sure to welcome me and my friend to the area. They were very out going and made our food decision quite easy. J is one hell of a cook, on top of a conversationalist. The food was fantastic. Needless to say, I will be back.

Ambiance gets 5 Stars and the owner seems cool. I tried the Halibut as they were out of the Tri-Tip; very fresh and flaky. As a few Yelpers have mentioned, the portions of fish are a bit small, but overall a decent sized plate for $14 when you factor-in the delicious brown rice and sautéed vegetables. Service took a little long considering I was the only customer, but seems appropriate for the laid-back feel of the neighborhood. Nice beer selection.

I love this place, great beautifully cooked food, whether you go for the Tri Tip, Halibut or if your lucky enough to be there for Steak being on the menu take that and a glass of red wine. The owner J is super nice and friendly. Its great to go somewhere like this which has a nice mellow vibe, and outstanding food. They also have a good selection of beers coming through. Cant recommend it enough!

I visited the Village Hut when they participated in a fundraiser for local nonprofit Store to Door. The food is delicious, healthy and fresh. It is a small place but they make the most of the fun space and outdoor seating. Friendly service, great local place. We will definitely be back.

i recently stumbled upon this little place in the multnomah village area off of capitol hwy. they do bentos, chicken, organic tofu, steak, hamburgers, fish and homemade soup!! they have painted hills brand beef and free range chicken and good ingredients and care about quality and homemade goodness which is very rare these days!! i am gluten free and usually eat whole foods. when i explained this to the owner/cheif he didnt even bat an eye just accommodated! i had the ahi ahi seared tuna with brown rice and stir fried veggies. sooooo good. and the homemade soup was to die for! i took some smoked ribs and homemade coleslaw and rice home to my hubby, with a beer to top it off! the homemade bbq sauce was so good my bbq expert and picky eater of a husband said"this guy knows what hes doing!" the inside is a quaint little seating area and has a couple other private seating areas in the adjoined building. its quirky barber stools and dentist chair in the back with an electric fireplace make this place a fun date night location or just a hangout!!

Incredibly fresh food and wonderfully friendly service. Ordered the halibut special and my companion ordered the tri-tip. Both get the strong recommend. Every dish comes with a well-sized serving of rice (brown rice available) and a nice Asian slaw and a slice of watermelon. The menu has a nice variety. Definitely one of the healthiest restaurants I've ever visited, which I appreciate.

Went here for the first time tonight. The steak and thai tofu were both spectacular. Expect to wait a while for your food but it is COMPLETELY worth it. The best that Multnomah Village has to offer.

Went there about 3 weeks ago around like, 830- I was starving. To the Village Hut's defense, it's not their fault that within the last 1.5 hours of closing all they had left was the chicken, and maybe some beef. However, the food wasn't anything in my opinion I couldn't find by ordering a bento at another place down the road. My chicken, steamed brown rice and asian slaw were all decent, I did appreciate that the asian slaw was actually sliced apples and not drenched in sauce. No diet coke beverage choices, just regular...man, I was craving a coke. My meal arrived with the last 2 slices of chicken being very over cooked- so much I could not chew them, and I do not like wasting food ;) The service, or lack thereof, pushed me to say aloud "We are not coming back here": -No greeting when we walked in from the high school-aged girl. She did see us enter, too. -No "Do you have any questions about the menu?" etc. She just stood there and stared at us. It was waaaay weird. I wanted to like, run out with my hands in the air. -When we did finally order, she told us to take a seat anywhere, but if we could stay closer that would be preferred. Mind you, we were the ONLY people in this tiny establishment to begin with. -After dropping off our meals, I wanted to ask for salt... but she immediately headed back inside behind the counter to probably see if her BFFE had replied to her text. Bottom line, it was very clear she was more interested in her phone than us- and the food was not so impressive to warrant me risking changing my opinion thus far. Maybe if I go with a group next time at say, 5pm, I would have better luck. I'm fine not returning though.

I have tried this place twice and each time has been disappointing. First, the food is way overrated and overpriced. You would think that for the price you are paying, you would get a decent portion of quality food. Instead, you get a small portion of blandness. The only thing that is really nice is the patio, but it is really not worth the money to sit there and not get good food. Second, the owner is kind of pushy. If we don't want beer, we don't want beer. Don't push us to purchase something we do not want. I don't think I will come here again. There are other places in the Village that are better and more down to earth.

I love this place, the food is tasty and prices are reasonable. I stop in a couple times a month to grab some meals to reheat at work, I love that the staff puts my meals in my own reusable containers.

I love my neighborhood just because there are places like this. We have been visiting Jay at his hut of good food for almost 3 years now. The food is healthy and fresh! You may have to wait a little bit but think of it as going to a friends house for a leisurely dinner not fast food! You'll meet interesting people and expect great conversation. A true locally owned business that you will want to come back for. Don't' order the chicken unless you are under 5 - not because it is bad but because it is the least interesting thing on the menu. Go for the fresh fish or beef. The ribs are a MUST TRY! Ask the person working what they just finished preparing or what they recommend and then try it! The beer and wine is limited in variety but not in quality and will pair well with the food.

My friends and I walked up to Multnomah village to get my friend's bike fixed, and we went to Village Hut before we walked back home. A little overpriced. The food was okay, nothing fantastic, especially not for the price. There was some odd spicy sauce that I was given, never found out what it was. It wasn't bad, simply not what I expected. You get two slices of apple, that isn't that great. I personally didn't like the slaw, but one of my friends ate my portion and really liked it. Service was prompt. The owner, and I'm thinking his daughter probably, were very friendly and attentive.

I love this place. The owner is super friendly and will chat on slow nights. We always run into nice folks here finishing up their food or waiting on take-out, and it just has the greatest neighborhood feeling, which is refreshing. The food is simple but delicious. Aside from soup and the occasional special, it seems that every item on the menu is the same - rice, veggie stir fry, slaw, and your choice of protein. The beef is consistently outstanding and never overdone in my experience. My partner loves the salmon, though the tiger prawns were a little rubbery the time I got them. I recommend for a casual dinner or take-out!

Having recently moved our office to Multnomah Village, I was searching for a great quick and easy lunch spot. I often never leave my office or always bring food back but today I was so glad I ventured out to the Village Hut because I found what I was searching for. This place is so delicious! When I walked in the door of this great find I was greeted with the most warm welcome from the owner working hard on all the lunch orders. The smell was heavenly and the dishes that were laid out looks so scrumptious. I seriously could not decide what to eat EVERYTHING looked spectacular! I chatted it up with a wonderful local gentleman along with the owner and his family and I really enjoyed my stop in, I need to get out more often. I ended up with the Salmon and the very wonderful owner let me sample some of his amazing chowder too. I love to eat fresh and local and feel good about what I put into my body and the Village Hut makes it easy to eat right on the fly! Feeling good after lunch!

The food was delicious - I am a sucker for bento and this is easily one of the best I've had. The service was fun and relaxed and eating in a hut made me feel like I was on a much needed vacation. My new go to spot!

This place looks like SW's very own beach shack but there has been efforts in the last year to include cover from the rain and a fireplace for warmth. Get the fish. The owner is very good about getting the freshest to your plate. I typically get whatever is in season. The slaw is the first I've ever liked. There is no mayo involved. The portions are just about perfect, just enough room for desert. I always walk across the street to Ottos and Antia's for a $5 strudel!

Sorry to rain on the locals' parade but if all I want is brown rice (can be made ahead of time) and grilled fish (shouldn't take more than 6 minutes each side) I should NOT have to wait for 40 minutes. Oh, and did I mention that there were only 2 people ahead of us? I get laid back and low key but one of the components of the food service industry is service. Yes, the girls were nice but after 30 minutes when my husband went in to say, "What's up?" they asked what we had ordered. Spacy is not good in a restaurant. Additionally, if the food had been amazingly flavored and interesting then I would not feel so put out but seriously....it is a piece of grilled fish. I can do that at home. Calling it an Asian fusion place is a bit misleading- there's no fusion. Plus, it's not inexpensive- another factor that would lead me to expect more. Two standouts- the coleslaw was bright and fresh with great flavor as was the sauce that accompanied the meal. Unfortunately, the sauce comes in a thimble so you can't even cover your fish with it. Huge disappointment overall and we won't go back.

    (1)
  • Brian C.

Decent food although it's definitely not cheap, the wait is too long, and they use lots of garlic so I would advise against eating here before you go out anywhere. It's nothing too fancy - and the fish is usually overcooked for my preference so I often feel like I should have just cooked at home instead. It's nice to have a bento option in the neighborhood and I know good ingredients cost more money but anywhere but SW Portland and this place likely wouldn't be in business long.

The Village Hut serves the healthy, fresh food that I often crave but don't necessarily eat often enough. On a recent trip the special wild salmon bento with stir fried veggies was heaven on a plate. Especially after spending the afternoon walking around the village, "studying" in Starbucks, and working up an appetite. Salmon, brown rice and vegetables are just fundamentally satisfying. The opportunity to eat such hearty, healthy food and enjoy a beautiful sunny day on the patio was very welcome. I could take or leave the asian slaw and the special sauce that comes on the side. One is too bitter, the other too spicy. I don't care for the dark meat used in the chicken bento so I think I'll stick to the seafood options in the future, even though they're more expensive. It's a great place for lunch, and I have never had to wait more than 10-15 minutes for food.

This is a really unique little place. Just popped in for a snack and a cleansing ale. The young guy running the place was super friendly and basically made up a dish to satisfy our desire for scallops and shrimp. Simple but tasty stir fry over rice. I will go again to actually have dinner. My companions really liked the ice cold glasses.

  • Jim B.

Ate there today for the first time and I'll definitely be back. I'm not sure why people are complaining about a long wait. First, I had my food in around 5 minutes...that's not bad in my mind. Second, I don't want my food to be ready in 60 seconds. That means it's been sitting there. I had the pulled pork with organic white rice, both of which were very good as was the slaw. My only complaint was I didn't get enough sauce for my liking...but I'm sure I could have asked for more. I'll definitely be back.

Great food. Some of the best in outer SW Portland. The owner and his employees are really nice. It gets busy later in the day, so be prepared for a bit of a wait most nights for dinner

Hidden little gem! Very fresh food and friendly service. If you're looking for a healthy and fresh bento style dinner, Village Hut is your place. The owner is very nice and combined an entree for us because we couldn't decide what meat/fish we wanted. Always nice to go somewhere and have great customer service.

What a cute place- and if you think you've had "bento" at one of those crappy teriyaki places you are in for a serious treat. Everything was super fresh- I got the halibut bento with fresh caught halibut, brown rice, asian slaw (no mayo), and a nice wedge of watermelon. The sauce they use is not your typical teriyaki sauce, it is really nice with a little kick that was not too spicy for my son, who loved his shrimp bento. Ithink there were about a dozen proteins to choose from, including painted hills beef, pulled pork, St. Louis ribs, several types of seafood, and of course chicken. Other people have talked about the owner being super friendly and he totally was. Really nice guy! I don't live too close, but I am sure I will be back at some point!

The Village Hut is a nice change and different kind of place for the SW neighborhood restaurants. This place is not a dressy formal place, and this place absolutely not a fast food chain. It's a casual cozy restaurant that serves organic and healthy food with affordable price. I had the lamb plate that came with rice, coleslaw, and fruit. The lamb was tender and perfectly cooked to my taste. The rice and coleslaw were good side dishes for this meal. The price tag for my dinner was $10 and it was a full meal. I also tried my sister's scallop and it was amazing. The scallop was sweet and juicy. It was just perfect and I will get that next time. They have a nice outdoor seating and there was a guy who played music when we were there. It made me feel like I was not in SW Portland. The owner was nice and friendly. We had a good dinner there and we will be back for a visit to this hut, very very soon.

I had a great salmon bowl dinner here last night, and a great beer(Firestone Walker Union Jack IPA). The salmon was bright reddish-pink, like wild salmon should be, and perfectly cooked. The brown rice was great, as were the sauteed veggies and the asian-ish slaw on the side. The location is very small, and when I arrived, there was one guy working. As a result, the orders stacked up and 30 mins later, I was most of the way through my pint of beer and wondering when my food would arrive. I wasn't really in any hurry, but I can't imagine being willing to wait that long if I went there at lunchtime. I can tell that these guys really care about the quality of the ingredients they use, though, and the back patio was really chill to hang out on. I am deducting a star for the insanely-long wait for the food and for the cloud of flies that were swarming around the semi-covered back patio. For now, I'm giving them 4 stars. They may earn the 5th one on a return visit. :)

I admit I love the healthy food choices they offer and the relaxed environment...as well as the fact the cook bought us dessert from Otto's and Anitas across the street and they feature local wines. The reason I give it 3 stars is because this is my style of cooking at home and I know a lot of others who do the same, I expected something really exciting from all of the great reviews. Brown rice, veggies, priced a little too high. I also found out the next day that my card had been charges for an extra $10. Oops. Yay for healthy eating tho!

The perfect place to eat in the village. Cozy little huts in the back allow privacy. The food is delicious and fresh and the portions are just right. First time experience was great and i will be going back for seconds!

Once you've found this place you will start to hate yourself a little for not stopping earlier. A few local guys run this place and are easily serving up some of the tastiest grilled foods in the southwest. I also had these guys cater my wedding rehearsal which is one of their new budding businesses, and everyone at the event was super impressed. Not only do you need to stop in here for some dinner and a beer, but think about having them cater a special occasion.

We love the Village Hut, and it's our go-to place in SW Portland. The food is satisfying, healthy and always cooked with care in reasonably-sized portions. When we go in, they always remember us and spend time talking with us. There are lots of cozy corners to sit in while you're there, sometimes sharing with other neighborhood residents. The place is super well-maintained and unique. Our favorites are the ribs, the halbut or salmon and the filet mignon, which is the best steak I've had in my life, but still really affordable. Keep it coming, Village Hut!

This place is right next to my office. I can get a local Oregon beer I've never heard of with my lunch. They make their very own sauces, and have at least 20 types of bottled hot sauce. It's grilling outside 7 days a week, no matter the weather. I locked myself out of my office and was able to conduct a business meeting here with no problems, just a casual, chill lunch spot with tons of flavor with a watermelon slice on the side without fail.

Best food in the village! No really it is that good. Seared tuna, and scallops on rice (brown or white of course). Great veggies too. The meats are always great and the people there are so damn friendly its hard not to go back day after day. Beer, wine and sodas for drinks are all you need and sometimes they have freshly baked desserts to finish it off. Oh and there is usually a bit of mango thrown in (canned or something it is so good). Yum! I know where I am going for lunch today....

Seriously the best food in the village. $3 pints on the newly installed taps that will rotate the brews. The food is so fresh and in the future my order will depend on what the chief/chef/server/busboy/everything tells me he picked up on that particular morning. There is so much good stuff on the menu it is always a hard choice as everything is top notch. The portions are perfect for lunch or a light dinner and the price is more than reasonable. As an added bonus, you can sit out back in the small area with your furry companion. Primo.

I love the concept of Village Hut - casual, healthy, fresh food. However, I guess I wasn't expecting to pay $40 for two people (without drinks) - quite steep for the portions of rice and fish we ordered, and the "side" of fruit that came with my husband's order consisted of a total of two small apple slices. The slaw was tasty and It's a cute spot, I just was not impressed enough to visit a second time.

Why didn't I go here sooner? Perhaps I did, the stock chicken bento just didn't win me over. Although it's fresh chicken, comes with sides, and sauces it didn't do it for me. The chicken will save you from taco bell or any derivative of fast food at only $6. The Village hut turns it on when it comes to the higher end items. All the vegetables and produce are superbly fresh. My favorites include a wide selection of their fish, sea scallops and if I'm feeling caloric some of the BBQ ribs. Save your soul from fast-food purgatory, and get some real food at the village hut.

So delicious! Food is simple, almost plain, but totally yummy. You choose the type of meat or fish, or tofu you want, add a rice, asian slaw, and a bit of fresh fruit, and you get one seriously awesome, healthy meal. Prices are more than reasonable for the quality of the food. And a big thumbs up that the owner shops for everything himself and buys Painted Hills beef and other sustainably raised products! Definite go-to place in the nieghborhood!

We love the Hut. Heading over there right now. These guys are giving out topline gourmet meals at very reasonable prices. Always friendly and relaxed. Imaging somebody serving you a Painted Hills filet mignon and seared ahi with some excellent wine, in your backyard.

Love Village Hut! So tasty and healthy. The owner is super helpful and friendly, and you can tell he takes pride in the product he puts out. If you're in the area, check out the Hut, you'll be a regular soon too. :)

This place is a warm weather place only. We made the mistake of going here when it was like 20 degrees out and had to share a small room that had an electric heater with another table. We had to keep our coats on while we ate. But the food and service are worth coming back for (when it's warmer, of course). The food is served with rice and veggies and asian slaw. I had scallops and my husband had garlic shrimp. The scallops were a little lackluster but the rest of the food was good and the teriyaki sauce to poor over it all was great. The service was great. Just remember to bring a jacket if it's chilly outside.

Fourth time here.... food is fresh and delish and it's as good as it gets. Jay not only makes sure that these killer bentos are top notch, but that service is friendly and casual! Must try if you haven't.

Now this is a nice place for lunch. The Village Hut is kind of like a food cart, except you can go inside to eat. In fact, it's a couple little buildings with tables. This collection of tiny buildings has some good bento- I got pulled pork and brown rice, and it was tasty. The guy who runs the place was really friendly and let me try a couple sauces so I could see how spicy I wanted it. The pork was slow cooked all day so it was nice and tender. The meal came with some really good Asian slaw and apple slices. I like that this place is really close by; I gotta go there more often.

Come here for highly casual food that is very well prepared as long as the great owner, Jay, is cooking. It drops to 2 or 3 with some of the subs, but it is usually Jay who works 100 hours/week or more. Servings are good for for portion control- a little small for a larger appetite. Funky fun outdoor dining. Micro toilet. Dogs OK on the outer edge. GREAT steak bento, but everything is good. Enjoy

the food is good, the service is terrible. I waiting an hour for a bento. An hour. And it's expensive. I was about to leave when my order showed up. Waste of time. The owner reminds me of Artie from the Sopranos. A little too friendly to the point of annoying.

First timer on a later Friday night. The proprietor was awesome and attentive. Food with wholesome, healthy and tasty! Had a great variety to choose from and a very decent selection of wines. Great funky little place. Not cheap like a bento spot, but worth it.

OMG! We live within walking distance of this place and have walked past it a million times. This particular night we were headed to Lucky Lab for pizza and beer, but stopped at The Village Hut instead. The food was to die for! The scallops & halibut were perfectly done, accompanied by brown rice & the best slaw I have ever tasted. The finish was a nice wedge of watermelon. It was just the right amount of food with wonderful attention to detail of preparation. My only minor complaint woud be how long it took to get the food. All in all, well worth the wait!!

I went to the Village Hut for the 1st time today. Jay had ham and 15 bean soup today. He gave me a good taste and I couldn't leave without getting some to go. The free range chicken bento sounded so good I had to have some of it too. He gave me 1/2 jasmine rice and 1/2 brown rice. It was really good. I really like their slaw. The soup was really, really good. The ham was moist. When I make soup with ham in it, it gets dry. The carrots in the soup were perfection. I can't wait to try other things on the menu and he seems to have a lot of non bento specials. I'm not really a big bento fan but I may have been converted.

Cart-like atmosphere with the nicest owner and great bento style food. Not inexpensive but they use high end ingredients and purchase their meat and fish form New Seasons. Cold slaw with no dairy and in season fruit thrown in. Very good clean neighborhood dive.

This place has amazing food! If you haven't seen it, it's the little yellow hut across from the pet store in the village. They have amazing pulled pork sandwiches, think luau not Texas BBQ. Amazing. My fiance picked out a bento with seared scallops and seafood on a bed of rice? Anyway, both meals were surprisingly flavorful, hot and served fast. The menu is short but has a little of everything. Everyone should stop by here for lunch at least once.

We live within a block and love this place. Not a huge variety of flavors, but great cuts of fresh , well-seasoned meat and seafood with friendly service. A couple of rotating tap beers and a decent handful of wines round out the menu, and the patio is great rain or shine (part covered). You can also get take-out and save a couple bucks, but I like the vibe here.
