Workers are cool, owner is just as cool, atmosphere is Clean, comfortable and luxurious. The coffee is strong and quality. I love this local shop. Great place to meet, snack, eat, drink coffee and just chill. #bestcafeintown #doneright #nuthinnegative

I've been coming here for years and it is a fantastic place to just chill out. I never feel pressured or rushed, so it is wonderful for studying or computer work. Never too crowded either, so I can always find a seat even with a group. And when I've been studying for hours and I get really hungry, I always find something good to eat. So glad to have this spacious place in the neighborhood. The recent upgrades to the furniture are awesome - love the new couches.

Staff is very friendly, especially the nice new young man who is there at night during the week. What a sweetheart! He made me the best coffee drink I ever had and had a conversation with me that was great (and cute too). You don't see that everywhere. I see new faces there everyday which is too bad, what's with the overturn? Hope you keep the good ones. Place is very clean, but the music is so boring and slightly repetitive. Just because its a coffee shop doesnt mean yoi have to play the typical stuff. If you want more people to come in, play some more recent upbeat stuff. Can you change it??? Prices are fair, which is nice compared to other places in the area. The staff also keep it very clean! I always see them hard at work. Why is the TV always off? I'm not saying put on the Disney channel but what about some local news? At least on mute.

This place is my jam. Setting: Unassuming exterior (actually didn't find it the first time I went looking). Open, cozy interior with lots of great windows. Clean. Tables everywhere. Various seating options. Outlets are also pretty accessible. Menu: I've only ordered the same couple of things (creature of habit).. The americano WORKS and it's all I'll ever need. They also have gluten free cookies/snacks from time to time, and they have all been delicious. One of the super helpful staff was eager to let me know about the cafe's association with the deli on the other corner (Urban Green - Veg/Terranean Deli: Will be trying soon). Staff: They're perfect. Laid back, helpful, hard working. They do their job, I do mine. We get along fantastically :) Other perks: This place has 2 different reward programs: standard punch card and a national card, Belly. The music varies, but isn't overly blasted or anything. It's always a nice level with the speakers coming from their high ceilings. So yeah, this place has been a dream for this student. Seriously, I don't get work done like this anywhere else. I almost don't want to hype it so I can continue keeping it to myself ;)

I haven't spent much time here other than for my in and out morning fixings, so I can't comment on the food/wifi/music. That being said: The coffee is pretty good. Prices are reasonable. The service can be slow. One moody/rude barista (on multiple occasions)

This establishment is really nice, we find them to be very hospitable for meet ups. The food and coffee is wonderful. The staff is hospitable and helpful.

Great coffee shop. Plenty of tables and comfy seating. Free wifi, bottomless coffee for $3, and clean bathrooms. Staff is always friendly. Never had a bad experience here in coming 3 to 4 times a week for the last 4 months. Nice non-dairy milk and excellent food options.

Service was indeed slow here with only one guy to man everyone's needs from taking orders, making drinks or food, even making change. The breakfast sammy wasn't very good. Microwave egg that was already made beforehand. The mocha wasn't exciting either. No real taste to it, very middle of the road. They do have a lot of seating and I could see people working on laptops and such. I can only wonder if I came on an off day...

As noted in other reviews, this a place where one can stretch one's legs, do computer work, or just plain relax. The baristas and owners are generally super accommodating. However, we found the food selection to be somewhat limited and the background music very annoying after a while. I appreciate the intent to create a relaxing space, but listening to Frank Sinatra for the umpteenth time in the background is enough to keep even the most extreme crooner aficionados at bay. Suggest mixing the music up more (but do nonetheless appreciate it not being overly loud). But overall, one of the best coffee houses in The Pearl.

Urban Grind Coffeehouse is a place that puts an emphasis on free wireless network, an expanded area where you could nod off to, and a lovely bar. The bar has so many coffee drinks. There is a sign $3.00. That eats up any drive for coffee drinks. It's bottomless coffee drinks. Sure there is an expanded tray of pastries and things in glass jars. It is all inexpensive and magazines that are somewhat dated. It's a coffee place that goes between that nameless Seattle many coffee house network and Peet's Coffee. It's a place that is tucked in, slick, modern, but cozy all the time. It's really odd how it has a television set in the corner that is focused on sports. It's a place where you have to pay attention to.

The atmosphere at this coffee shop is so relaxing and perfect. There are plenty of couches and chairs for different groups to mingle and hang out without being too close to any other strangers. This is THE place to go if you need to catch up with a friend or on work. The long haired male barista is super friendly and was humming along to the Counting Crows, "Big Yellow Taxi" when I came in and even recognized the couple and recalled their drink preference that came in before me. This shop understands the craft of good coffee, and great customer service. Thankyou!

I absolutely remember my first visit here, when things around the street were not quite yet built out... I probably came to patronize within a month or two of their first opening..... and found the space like an open gallery.... wonderful for this immediate area, which doesn't have too many go-to solid cafes. I'm a fan of their color scheme, their lay-out, and for filling in the gap where a cafe was needed. The coffee was solid but i cannot say that it was a huge standout in taste or bouquet (sorry). Huge area for ensuring your own personal space, and interesting architectural look in this part of the Pearl.

Coffee is nothing spectacular. Cute place but rude barista. Would not frequent here if it wasn't for the location.

Great coffee shop! Plenty of seating and plugs. $3 house coffee.. BOTTOMLESS! They also have some delicious food (falafel wrap, hummus, gluten free baked goods, etc). Other than that, the WiFi seems to kick me off every half an hour. Despite that, this place is a great place to study.

The atmosphere at this coffeehouse is nice enough, with walls painted either orange or green, and a good amount of seating. Some of the furniture is showing its age, though, with tattered upholstery and dingy chairs mixed in with cleaner furniture pieces. There's a ramp leading to the entrance, making this a wheelchair-accessible location. There are a bunch of signs on a wall, raising awareness about dyslexia. These observations lead me to think that the owner is a caring person... ...but service on this Sunday morning came without a smile, from a woman who I presumed to be the owner. (Of course, I could be wrong about that.) This isn't to say that service was mean...just not friendly. The coffee itself is entirely average. Portland coffee snobs will be quite dissatisfied, but others will accept it for what it is.

I ordered the panini special brie, pears, onions and it was inedible. When I looked online for reviews of this place I saw it gave someone else food poisoning and I am not surprised. Service was so-so and scattered and the place feels like it hasn't been cleaned in awhile. This is my first and last time here. I was looking for a place to do some work but was inspired to move on.

The friendly new owners are redecorating and refurnishing the place. Urban Grind is large, comfortable, relatively quiet, and is my favorite place to grab a coffee and get some work done.

Went in to get a cup of tea before my workout. Strange ambiance. Place was nearly empty. I've never seen a TV in a coffee shop before. I ordered my tea which was $2.75 and was then told abruptly by the woman (I assume she was the owner) that there is a $3.00 minimum. Are you f***ing serious? She tried to sell me a .25 mint. I didn't want candy at 8:30 in the morning. I just wanted to drink my tea before my workout and not have to be told how much money I have to spend at a certain place. I told her that I'll just go get some tea some other place and walked out. She screamed at me, "Are you serious! After I poured your tea?!" I didn't respond. I couldn't believe that she is so near-sighted as a small business owner to lose me as a customer over a quarter. I walked down to Nossa Espresso Bar where my same cup of Rooibos tea was $2.25 and they proudly took my debit card! I'll never go to urban grind again and now I know why the place is so empty in the mornings.

Not the worse coffee, but I wasn't anywhere near impressed. Go to Barista if you want coffee in that neighborhood. They are by far the best coffee I've had in Portland in the past two years.

Lunch here is an enjoyable affair. The menu is simple, valuing quality over quantity. Their grilled cheese is the best I can remember eating outside my own kitchen (going here with the choice of pepper jack and cheddar). The side of fresh veggies was ideally complemented by what I assume is a house-made ranch, peppery and rich with dill, it was delicious enough to overcome my usual disdain for the typically underwhelming dip. Their coffee is pleasant, neither acrid nor watery, just not wowing. The space is an eclectic hodgepodge of everything that makes Portland fun. Lime green walls, architecture blending the feeling of galleries and industrial loft spaces, fun art on the walls, and all manners of secondhand chairs and tables. A decent, though not abundant, supply of outlets make it pretty easy to find a comfy corner to set up shop, and the friendly staff make you feel right at home.

I am a coffee fanatic and like to support local coffee shops vs. corporate coffees... Urban grind has a very good neighborhood coffee shop that is very friendly to its customers and are very friendly to dogs, which is important to me. I love going there for a coffee and a pastry, I look forward to it. The Internet here is fantastic, if you are looking to do some work a way from your home or office; it's a great place to connect and also meet clients and friends. They have done a great job with the layout, the coffee and food.

Coffee was good, but you will definitely get the stereotypical rude, snob barista attitude here.

Urban Grind recently became my closest coffee shop, which is an important consideration for a guy who works from home. It's a fine coffee shop, and in a smaller or less coffee-oriented town would likely be worthy of 4 stars. It's good enough that I go here more than any other coffee shop, but I wouldn't drive or walk out of my way for it. The atmosphere is the best part. Laid back staff, nice tall ceilings, different seating options to accommodate laptops, lounging, studying. Enough power outlets. Neon green paint that seems kookie but somehow still works. Interesting art that rotates. Music that changes depending on which barista is closest to the music machine. Baristas with better than average taste in music. Friendly owner guy, who seems to care about the coffee and food he serves. Can't give it 4 stars because: (1) They violate credit card policies by requiring a minimum charge, and have no ATM on site. I completely get the math behind transaction fees and low-dollar transactions, but then charge an extra dime per cup for Christ sake and spread this cost out over all transactions! Making it difficult for your customers to buy ONE of your most basic items (i.e, a single cup of coffee) makes no sense...you come across as cheap, and are taking your own business issue and making it a problem for your customers. (2) Breakfast sandwiches are on the bland side. They come in two varieties, regular and 'spicy', the difference being a barely discernible layer of picante sauce on the latter. They're also pressed in a panini press, but you'd never be able to tell by looking at them. No evidence of 'pressing' or toasty goodness as you'd expect. I like you, Urban Grind, but if you could fix these few things, I think I could love you.

  • Don M.

Typical Portland service, and by that I mean you stand there forever until you tell the server standing 8 inches away from you that you are there so they will acknowledge you and take your order. That has happened all 3 times I've been there. The drinks are good, but the service sucks. They don't really have many places to sit for such a large area. They have a lot of chairs that are uncomfortable to sit in because there are right where everybody stands in line, or are in a circle with 3-4 other chairs and are generally taken up by a person working.

    (2)
  • Elena M.

For what it's worth, I like this place. I've been a half dozen times so far and plan on going back. Large space that is big enough that kid customers and non-kid customers don't bug each other. Good coffee, nice staff (at least in the afternoons), good food.

    (4)
  • KYo R.

As chill as the atmosphere is & as good as the coffee is, I'd love to rate this place better. The one thing that gets me every time I give it another shot is the funk the staff's in. Is it a burden to make a sandwich, I guess I could bring my own? Like I said, the coffee is good and the building is historic with a lot of character, but staff, come on, generally speaking you're trying a little to hard to snub the clientele in your pursuit of "hipness". If any of you aren't like this, I apologize & I'll keep an open mind the next time I come by.

The cinnamon roll tasted like sugary bread, and the cappuccino was just bad. Great atmosphere and decent prices, but the quality didn't measure up to what you get anywhere else in Portland.

  • Nicole H.

My new favorite place. Plenty of cozy couches and chairs for reading/relaxing mixed with great tables and chairs for working. Super friendly service. 3 versions of chai - sweet, spicy and "magic" which is a combo of the two and was delicious. I did not have anything to eat, but it looked like they had plenty of options.

    (5)
  • Theresa H.

Great lattes, delicious lunch and treats, and most importantly, lots of room and tables! Urban Grind is my new favorite place to study and enjoy a nice chai latte (they offer both spicy and sweet). Even when the place is packed there are chairs and tables open. It's a little pricey, but aren't all the coffee shops in Portland? They offer tons of options for food and drink, including wine and happy hour! This means you could spend an entire day there: coffee and work in the morning, wine and relaxing in the late afternoon. Unlike some of the previous reviewers, I have only had pleasant encounters with the baristas. They may not go out of their way to strike up a conversation, but they have always been pretty friendly and bring the food right to your table. The only complaint I have is the temperature: I know that the baristas get hot, but opening up the doors when it's raining and 45 degrees outside is not pleasant for the rest of us. Brr. At least I ordered tea that I could keep refilling.

Before I begin, allow me to give you some background - I live less than a block away from this coffee shop; and have visited there several dozen times in the past 6 mos. This review is not the bitter rantings of a lone bad experience - but rather a thoughtful reflection based on many many visits. As I said have been to UG at least 50 times in the past six months - I don't particularly like the place, but it is so damned close to my house. It is a nice location, tons of seating (though it is often occupied freakishly early by the laptop brigade) and a nice, open feel to it. I have mild complaint about the quality of beverages - they are for the most part just fine, occasionally excellent, and with equal regularity, poor. The place looks pretty dingy behind the counter near the food prep, so I usually avoid eating anything from there; when I have dared to the result were predictably mediocre. What really gets under my skin about this place is the lackadaisical service - and inept management. The process behind the counter just defies reason, as if it were a contest to do simple tasks the most complicated way possible. Order more than one item/drink and in my experience, 75% of the time they complete the first item, and come back with a blank slate: "what else?"; then repeat the process for each item. It seems like a minor issue - but have that experience over and over, or god-forbid there is a line - and even the most placid Buddhist monk would be muttering curses under his breath. Some other tips: A NY Times is $2.00 by the way - it says so right on the cover. When I hand you a bill - look at it, it has numbers which indicates the denomination; so you can give the correct change. When I pour part of my drink out into your garbage, it is not because I wish to make your life difficult - but because you ignored my "please leave some room" request. Try making a new pot of coffee before you run out of it - this saves time: yours and mine; you are after all if nothing else, a coffee shop. Sure my review is a tad obnoxious - but snap out of it Urban Grind! You have a lot going for you: a great space, a nice location - I offer my opinion only because I wish you success!

The employees here think they are a little too cool for school... Portland , the NW for that matter is FULL of great coffee shops, this place is a dud. If your looking for rude, slow service good news, this place is perfect for you! I hope this place shuts down and if attitude doesn't improve, it's only a matter of time and it will...

    (1)
  • Katherina A.

They have a cute inside and nice feeling but they scalded my latte - a huge pet peeve of mine! And the pastries were stale. There are too many great coffee houses in Portland to ever drink a scalded latte.

    (2)
  • Ann G.

Two shots of espresso with rice milk is my favorite, iced seems to be the way to go to allow the smooth, richness of the coffee to come through. Service is super friendly in a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. There's ample space to spread out on couches and tables by yourself or for meetings.

  • Amy D.

A good little cafe with decent coffee and service. If you avoid the yuppies then you can have an interesting conversation with the Baristas and soak in the atmosphere. It's a tiny rebel spot in the world of REI and pearlites with it's lime green walls and cheap beer. If you want to know the hours... it is: M-F 6am-8pm and 7am -8pm on weekends. And the art this month is all from the employees. In the little back secret room is a great collection of photos from a PNCA graduate dealing with Craigslist Casual Encounters. The main floor is a group of stark black and white travel photographs. And near the sofas are a group of collage photographs.

    (4)
  • Andrea S.

Okay - so they've changed. The service has been a lot better lately! And their lunches are a really good deal. The wi-fi is free, and they don't care if you park there for hours using it. I will keep going :)

    (4)
  • Mandee P.

I give one star because of the horribly rude staff. I didn't even get looked in the eye when I ordered and when my boyfriend asked about a pastry, they made him feel like he was such a burden and didn't even ever find out the answer. I will never come here again.

    (1)
  • Sarah P.

I can honestly say this was the worst cappuccino I have ever had. It was HUGE, first of all, and the foam was just plopped right on top, carelessly. I can't tell you how the espresso tasted, because it was so diluted with milk. Gross. Yes, I'm a coffee snob, I've worked with coffee for more than 3 years, so maybe i'm being harsh, but if you love really good coffee, go an extra few blocks over to Barista. It is the same price, and 10 million times tastier.

    (1)
  • Irene C.

"Coffee should be served hot as hell, black as night, and strong as love." They are not effing joking. Their coffee is black and strong . . . and strangely thick. I feel bad for those sensitive to the peristalsis-inducing effects of coffee because Urban Grind coffee in pretty much a cup of E-lax for them. Despite all that, I can't seem to stop drinking the stuff. Is there such thing as coffee-drunk? Decent place to study with the free WiFi, seemingly quiet when toddlers are not roaming around off-leash (Seriously, people. . .handle your children.). Service is kind of a crapshoot . . . it took about five minutes to be noticed to take my order, and then it took about 15-20 minutes for them to heat up a pre-made panini. Albeit, the turkey panini was pretty flippin good, but seriously. . .20 minutes. Plus, it's walls are green and doors are orange. And they have cool lanterns.

  • Jess H.

Fairly comfy seating. Several outlets for plugging in.... but...woman behind counter is sooooo unfriendly -part of the appeal of any place is how the staff respond and make you feel.Coffee was no bueno

  • Thomas W.

There are many, many choices for lunch within walking distance of my workplace, but it is Urban Grind that gets the majority of my business. For one thing, the layout and decor are as far removed from my work as possible, being a very informal cafe with comfortable sofas, delicious coffee and tea, grapefruit soda (which is a huge plus for me!) and the most amazingly eye-opening paninis in town. Let's not forget the service: the staff here are always awesome, friendly beyond words and more than willing to make special order paninis a beautiful reality. I don't think I have ever seen a'one of them in a bad mood or in any way expressing anything less than the desire to make sure their guests are comfy and happy. So, after you grab your sandwich (with a side of their delicious curry, when they have it...if they have it...man I want some right now...!) settle on down with a book, your MP3s, or a copy of the Mercury and just let the stress seep from your feet. It is usually calm, and a welcome oasis from anyone's workday. Now, what would make this a 5-star score? Well, bringing back the Greek panini would go a long way towards making the Urban Grind perfect in my eyes. You can't just make the world's most "ZOMGood!" sandwich, serve it to me a few times, and then pull it away! Still, I do not begrudge them my business, and am more than willing to make alternative orders... ...but wow...that was one tasty panini.

  • Sean T.

This place is nasty. Don't go here. The kitchen area is dirty and it takes forever to get anything and beyond that when the hipster guy behind the counter went to make my sandwich he was wiping his snotty nose with his hand and then went to make my sandwich without washing his hands. Gross.

    (1)
  • Reid B.

Tasty coffee, good folk, and a really nice space in general. It's a great place to work from, with solid wifi and bits of food to tide you over. In fact, it's probably a bit too good of a place to work from, since I often lose track of time and stay too long.

    (4)
  • Kristina K.

Free Wi-Fi! Great drinks! Service can be hit of miss. We'd had service by one barista who didn't know the meaning of happy or smile, but we've had other baristas who are so pleasant that you want to spend all morning and afternoon on the couch. I recommend the iced tea with sassafras. It taste like root beer. Yummy.

  • Chris W.

Good coffee, wifi, music and right off the streetcar. Decent pricing too.

  • Michael L.

Remember I always write reviews from the "you can take (me) out of Gresham, but you can't take (said town) out of me" perspective. With that. I felt very comfy at UG. It did not have that stuffy-puffy Pearl feel. (Although I did get a smerk look while parking my truck from the Pearl Jogger Chick dressed head-to-toe in matching Pastel Purple Nike gear.) Staff at UG made me laugh, was fast, and the Mocha was hot and delish. I loved the sunlight beaming through the high windows as I read the paper. Perfect way to kick the morning in the butt.

  • Oday S.

These guys got it right for the most part. The interior is great. It's your typical industrial-chic space, but with very playful pistachio green and chocolate-purple walls and sherbet-orange doors. The layout includes something for everyone: big, sturdy tables near numerous outlets for business/school activity; window seating, again near numerous outlets, for more casual pursuits; and comfy leather couches for chillaxation. Patrons tend to be Pearlites, business folk, and the occasional art student. Lots of coffee and tea drinks to choose from. The coffee drinks aren't Portland-great, but they're pretty good. There's also beer/wine, bottled beverages, and blended icy things. Food isn't given as much attention as it probably deserves in this location, but it's all fairly quick, no-nonsense stuff like muffins, tarts, and sandwiches. Other than the short-of-perfect status for the coffee drinks and food, I've left off a star mainly due to the female barista that is often behind the counter. Really, really bad customer service skills. But they tall guy, who I think owns or manages the place, almost makes up for that.

    (4)
  • Ally S.

This was the worst coffee house I have ever been to. The lady behind the counter was extremely rude and rolled her eyes at me when I said hi and asked for my coffee. We walked out of there right after that. I would never recommend this place to anyone.

    (1)
  • Chris J.

I would have to agree that Urban Grind *does* have more of an Eastside vibe than a Pearl vibe, that's for sure. The interior is cool and hip, yet funky and eclectic. The music is awesome. The couches and bench seats by the window are comfy and cushy. The coffee is really good, in my opinion. The staff was extra friendly. There is only ONE bad thing about UG, and it isn't even the fault of UG at all, but that would be the parking in the area. It's such a BITCH to get a spot anywhere around here. If you live in the neighborhood and are within walking distance, you're set - UG is a great place to spend several hours soaking up the (really fast) wifi and enjoying the music, coffee and overall very cool vibes.

    (5)
  • Marty X.

This place is way better than it's east side counterpart. Although I've had a barista roll her eyes at me when I ordered an Americano, and had my order royally screwed up once, I'd get coffee here again. I'll probably skip the food and stick with the drip.

    (3)
  • J E.

Very mediocre. What others have said about slow and unorganized baristas is true. The place is also dirty. The table next to us went un-busses for an hour. I'd go to Barista or elsewhere if in the neighborhood.

    (2)
  • Charlie C.

This is such a spacious and comfortable place. I love their breakfast panini. It wasn't spicy enough for me; then again, I have a high tolerance for spicy food. I will definitely come back for that panini. Their iced americano was good too. I didn't have a problem with the baristas. One of them brought my food to my table, which was a bonus because I was expecting to retrieve it at the counter. Prices weren't too bad, considering it is in the Pearl District. Overall, good place to spend your entire day working on assignments.

    (4)
  • Darius M.

One of my mobile offices around town. Great coffee and snacks (you can even get some good sandwiches if you're really hungry) and the staff are always welcoming. There is plenty of seating space and a large back table if you need to meet with a big group of people (8-10 people).

    (5)
  • Arun R.

Great place. Very comfortable and roomy. Perfect for working or studying. The tables are sturdy and they have many cushioned chairs which can be really comfortable if youre working long hours. The food is great too. I had their savoury tarts and sandwiches. Really nice place to chill out or to do some serious work. The background music is just right. Not too loud to the point that it becomes intrusive.

    (5)
  • Scott T.

Excellent coffee, friendly people, cool environment and lots of comfortable seating. I didn't have any food and for once I didn't have my laptop with me (I think they have free wi-fi) but it's the kind of place you can hunker in and work/read for a long time.

    (4)
  • Liz G.

This is my backup coffee shop (coffeehouse northwest being my absolute favorite). Everything here is good, just not great. The coffee is good, but not great. The sandwiches are good, but not great. They get points for being fairly large and having lots of seating options (comfy leather chairs and couches, regular tables and chairs, a huge table and chairs), sandwiches, and beer and wine (i've only taken advantage of this once, but it's comforting to know it's there).

    (4)
  • Justin S.

Amazing place to relax and bring your kids. Large area for kids to play and free WiFi and Internet.

  • Leah T.

I am torn on this place. I love the location (close to work and the pearl shops), I love the atmosphere inside (casual, people working on laptops everywhere, great lounge couches and chairs), and the coffee is quite lovely...really...YUM. My dilema is with the baristas...there is one that is fun and friendly and he is always a joy to deal with...the others have this air about them that makes me feel like I should somehow feel privileged to be in their presence or something. I think overall, great place to meet up with people, grab a cup of joe, sit and chill. But don't go for the service...you'll be disappointed I suspect. Maybe if they took a more laid back approach...or more friendly...I don't know...there just seems to be a chip on their shoulders a lot and so they loose a star with me. But all in all...I continue to go back and get their coffee cuz, well...I am a sucker for coffee...that's really the only reason...coffee.

Located in the heart of the Pearl District, Urban Grind Coffee adds a little grunge to this stuffy stretch of NW. Urban Grind feels more Eastside than Pearl, so it's an inviting place to sip some coffee or tea and rest your feet after strolling through the snooty patootie boutiques.

So, with a million and one competitors and servicing a "Pearl" demographic, ya think service might be important to this coffee shop? I brought a business meeting mid afternoon - slow time. The gal at the counter completely ignored us - choosing to focus on her paperwork, while we were an obvious interruption. She hardly conversed once she decided to help us. Another obvious inconvenience - whoops, didn't heat up enough milk, so gee, you get a couple ounces shy of what you paid for. The whipped cream on that latte - the screeching music clawing its way out of the speakers literally drove us out for good.

i liked the interior very spacey and nice sitting areas....not a "pearl" sort of nice...a real people nice.....and when I say "real" people i mean cool people.....maybe I would even say trendy people cool......anyhoo the guy who made the drinks was super nice and we chatted about his tattoos and he was even sporting a local tattoo shop t-shirt!!! I love local businesses supporting each other!!!! Go team! Ok on to the coffee.......uhmmm i was excited about the concept of a mocha with a twist of orange but I was slightly disappointed :( It was nothing special.....though I do have to say that I think the guy was new and maybe is still in training?? I will go back to see and if you ever happen to be stuck in the pearl and need a breath of fresh air and not air tainted with the whiff of armani/fake tan head here....and if I offended anyone from the pearl....i am sorry but you know its true...

Decided to give this place another chance, couldn't look past the convenience of the location close to my apt. I stood by the cashier for a few minutes. The lady behind the counter seemed to be walking around picking up stuff but didn't bother to greet me or even smile! She finally came around to take my order (still not smiling). I ordered the special panini of the day (prosciutto brie and pear) and waited for about 10 minutes. I found the bread to be very tough, hard to chew. The prosciutto was just oily and soggy, on top of some sauteed onions. The brie had a pungent smell. The reason I am doing this update and giving it a one star is because 2 hours later I now have food poisoning! Nausea, cramping and diarrhea! Had to excuse myself from work (more like run out of the office) and now I am home writing this review.

A Haiku Review of Urban Grind Coffeehouse: Served from a burner. Sure does taste like Maxwell House! Go to Barista.

This place could be great but. . . Will never go here again! Walked up to order coffee and the 2 baristas behind the counter were in conversation about personal drama barely turned around to say hi to my friend and I then turned back around to finish their conversation about how she was so mad she could put her fist through the wall. . .that's great :/ We walked out.

Fast, friendly service. Nothing fancy, but at least you know what to expect. Good macaroons.

Decent coffee. Rude, indifferent, burdened-by-every-customer seeming staff. Literally all 4 times I've been here this is what I've wanted to say to the sour-faced jerk behind the counter: "I'm so sorry I'm here for a coffee beverage, please, let me bow my head in shame and leave this *coffee shop* and I shall never burden you again." I am always pleasant, know what I want, order it quickly and 'correctly' and say 'thank you' but I can't seem to get them to be at all, even seemingly, pleasant in return. I live near by, and I always figure I can kill them with kindess in the form of CASH TIPS. You know, be nice, leave them a nice tip, and then maybe they'll remember the next time I'm in and not treat me like dirt. But, alas, I get treated poorly each and every time. Wasted tips on worse than poor service. Simply put, Urban Grind is nothing but a bunch of hipster jerks that have better things to do than interact with the likes of their customers. I'll happily go a bit further to Barista (amazing, btw) or Sisters, where the coffee is just as good/better, and the staff is friendly and not put out by my mere presence. I'd have to say skip this one, which is a shame, because it's a cool place inside, and the coffee is tasty.

This place is my favorite coffee shop in Portland. It's very spacious, has the fastest wifi in town as far as I can see, the staff is friendly. It's in a great neighborhood. They roast their own beans and I have yet to find a better tasting expresso in the city. Their morning brew is amazing. Love this place. Couldn't recommend it more!

Solid cup of coffee. Friendly staff. Good beans. Nice space. Check check check check. No cold brew, though, if that's yer thing.

Very nice barista, but the service was excruciatingly slow for a morning that was not busy. I would not recommend stopping in before work, unless your day has a flexible start time:(

Really bad tasting coffee. Good bagel. Bad coffee. Service was fine. But I ultimate threw away my latte after three forced sips. Way below expectations for any locally owned Portland coffee shop.

Wandered by this coffee shop and stopped in for a smoothie. The lady at the counter was friendly and relaxed and the place had plenty of seating. The menu was a little small, and it would have been nice to have some better scenery out the windows.

While visiting Portland I thought it would be cool to do a tour of the locations used in Portlandia, and tried out Urban Grind. The coffee is fine, but the barista was downright rude to me. Also: Indigo Girls playing in the background? Wow.

Nice: Soft chairs. Outlets. Happy music. 300 mbit/s. Not Nice: Took a minute to figure out the internet, but once we did, it was productivity time.

Today was my first time here. I ordered a 1/2 caf coffee with almond milk and vanilla flavoring. It was fine; it was coffee. The staff seemed friendly enough. The reason I came here was because I read online that there was plenty of space for virtual workers to set up shop and work. Upon arrival there wasn't any seating... which is probably a good sign for the business! There is also 2 hour maximum paid street parking. I will probably try to find another place to work from before I return.
