This is the bakery I have been looking for since I was a kid. Reminds me of my cousin Butch and the family bakery that was in the midwest at one time. The maple bars, turn overs, pastries and everything are ridiculously tasty and MADE FROM SCRATCH! My NEW weekend tradition!

Simply Amazing. Plan on getting a few items, some for now and some for later....other reviews are correct when they say seating is limited, but that's not really an issue, if you can't get a seat just take your pastries to go and take a stroll through the new St. Johns .

WHAT?!?!?! I was told about this place and didn't realize the bakery gem I had in my own neighborhood. We stopped by today to pick up a few treats for later on and WOAH.... I can't believe my taste buds were allowed to have this much goodness at one time! The guy who helped us out was the 3rd generation of this 50 year family owned business. Here's what we decided on: Some sort of chocolate cupcake with whipped cream filling, a tulip cookie, a lemon cupcake, a lemon filled doughnut, 2 cinnamon swirl doughnuts and a marion berry shortbread cookie. Everything is made from scratch and you can totally tell!!! The love and care that went in to every treat can be tasted for sure! The doughnuts were not too heavy, not too sweet, not too anything. They were seriously perfection. I will be coming back here again and again for sure!!!

This place is such a gem and a real deal bakery! Ever since trying it the first time, I can't resist stopping in when I'm in the neighborhood. Everything looks so tempting and they truly have the best of the best doughnuts. They are so genuine and authentic! One time I stopped in and they had 3 different types of fritters! What's crazy about this place is that it's so amazing, and their prices are just about the same as a grocery store. Oh and their cookies are PERFECT. Anyway, you get the point, go check it out!

Best Cannoli in Portland. I do not say that lightly. Plus - excellent employees. True St Johns Gem. A place to come, enjoy the smells, and leave with a delicious pink box of handmade from scratch goodies in which one can truly taste love.

The Tulip Pastry Shop is out of this world exceptional. It has memorabilia and decor of all kinds about both baking and transportation. Their various products such as donuts are very tasty. They are also inexpensive. The lines are not bad, not bad at all. I walked in and ordered the maple bar. It was only seventy-five cents. Everything about it such as the sweetness, the quality of the dough and it's lacking of any fast-food style presentation makes this potentially one of Portland's best places to eat. Nothing feels off about the product. It melted perfectly in my mouth, rather than my shirt. The maple taste was rich. They could have more than one table, but with so many parks and benches, that is not much of a problem. Tulip Pastry Shop is a list topper.

After burgers at Brekkens (I know you love that alliteration), Ron and I stopped off to check out the always delicious cookie selection here at Tulip. After some thought and drooling, we settled on something the proprietor called her "cowboy cookie.". Such a list of ingredients! I remember coconut, raisins, and chocolate chips, but there were more. Definitely a worthy dessert served up by the very friendly person who baked them. Do come and give the treats here a try (didn't think I was going to finish without another try at alliteration did you?).

Still the awesomest old school classic pastry shop in town with seriously nice people running the place. Hello maple bar! Glad to hear they'll be open on Sunday mornings now - perfect treat to redefine the waistline after a long bike ride :) Great to see they have lasted so many decades in a neighborhood that has seriously evolved in so many ways. They've seen it all and we hope they are around for many more decades to come!

Just happened upon Tulip Pastry Shop today and it was such an amazing little shop, made better by the friendly employee (owner?) that met me at the counter. Kat was extremely amazing and awesome and there really are infinite adjectives to describe how wonderful they were. Can't even tell you what I got because I was so delighted with the conversation but I know whatever I was chowing down on was tasty and savory. Go here, you won't regret it. Get the lemonade they make too.

Why hasn't this place gone out of business? Minimal selection, food for fatties. I just can't understand why they can't have fresh bread, more than one donut selection, good cookies - you know, like a real bakery, instead of a museum for cheap american kitsch. Move on.

The only thing that would up this place in my esteem... is if they also made bagels of a similarly outstanding caliber as the rest of their stuff! That and more tables! But otherwise, I would have to work really hard to find fault with this quaint, old-fashioned, freindly and scrumpsious St Johns bakery! Three large cases of baked goods, a table and two chairs, two stools, and a long bar (were there seats on the other side?) pretty much sums up this shop located on Lombard at the end of downtown St Johns. But there's a lot to choose from. The owner (or one of them - I forget her name) waited on us. This is a family bakery - here since the 1920s if I am correct. She was super friendly, down to earth. Another owner came out later and was also really nice. You feel so welcomed! Prices here are GREAT! My glazed donut was .75. Yes, you read that right. And it was one of the best glazed donuts I've ever had! My young friend had a maple/cocolate glazed, custard filled donut (my bite was delish!, and only $1 since it was a day old). I also ordered some savory items and shared bites with my other friend. New $3, day old 2 for $3 - what a deal. Many flavors... we tried a sausage and a cheddar/broccoli flaky pastry. YUM. I also got a sweet bbq pork bun which I ate as soon as I got home. I am in love and will get one fo those every time I come here! I had a sip of coffee - not enough to judge - but it definetly wasnt bad, or I'd have noticed. I swear - all of this cost around $10 - maybe even less. What took me so long to try this place? What's taking you so long? Get down there now, soon, and often! I will be back, no doubt many times! They aren't open Sundays or Mondays... bumer for us - good for them. And for those of you counting, this is a 5 for the glazed donut as well!

This pastry shop is exceptional. Everything is delicious. Customer service is friendly and fast. Pricing is VERY reasonable. Plus, it's a local independent pastry shop that's been in business in the heart of downtown St John's for decades. My fave: the coconut twists. Sooooo good.

"Just swing by Voodoo and pick up donuts on your way into work" The dreadful line I've heard spew out of my colleague's mouth one too many times. "....but....I have my own local donut shop..." mumbles from mine. "Fine. But It's on YOU if you want to go out of your way." Oh, daaarn I have to drive a whole three minutes to the cutest pastry shop in the world. Get my beautifully made, ultra fresh dozen donuts plucked and arranged by the owner himself all while waiting negative 2 minutes in line. Darn. Eleven bucks cash and I'm out like trout. Colleague comments as follows: "Oh, wow cool Shakespeare quote on the brand stamp..." "Oh, yum, these are really good..." ---pause for two hours-- "Time for another donut...gosh I am such a bad influence." Now, my comments: Rich, airy, golden dough. Homemade, developed maple icing. Beautiful raspberry jam filled centers, perfect white icing. But. Get. This. A pretzel shaped donut, frosted with white fluffy cream and topped with chopped walnuts. Done!

In a panic I needed to get a cake for a party and had never been to Tulips. They had 2 cakes available and I bought both... The two running the shop were both unbelievably sweet and helpful. The cakes were insanely delicious and perfectly made. Awesome little St. John's gem.

My son is a student at the University of Portland, and the first thing I do when I arrive from New York City is stop it Tulip Bakery for the most amazing donuts I've ever had. The quality, is exceptional. As a pastry chef I appreciate all of the work that goes into the beautiful baked goods at this charming spot. I spoke with Kat today and found out she is a third generation baker. My son graduates on Sunday, and I'm thrilled that he is not leaving Portland so I can keep coming to Tulip Bakery whenever I visit.

I tried a wedding cake from Tulip at a recent wedding and was extremely disappointed. The frosting was chalky and crystalline. The cake was bland and very dry. The layers were poorly done with smudges and smears all over! Would not recommend.

No neighborhood is complete without a bakery like this. I've walked by Tulip several times after dinners but they close at 3 so I always missed them. Today I popped in after lunch. Art, the man behind the counter said "We've been here for 60 years, everything is made from scratch and it's all family recipes!" when I asked him what Tulip was all about. The decor is classic car culture memorabilia and we definitely talked about cars for a bit before I ordered. Art showed me some cool photos of project cars he and his son are working on. They had donuts, fritters (2 for $1.50), maple bars, cupcakes and all kinds of other doodads both sweet and savory. I opted for a cupcake-type creation with frosting, a dollop of whipped-cream and a chunk of candy on top with butter cream filling. It was right. My friend ordered a cookie sandwich made with 2 oatmeal cookies and cream filling. I haven't gotten the report back yet. They also offer take and bake pies along with a bunch of other goods I can't name but I wanted to shove in my face. I'll be back for some conversation and treats soon and often.

"What foods these morsels be..." These are classic and timeless pastries made simply and beautifully. The dough is so light and mouth melting. The icings taste like they were made in small batches at home. It feels like it's been there forever because it has. You'll feel nostalgic for every early memory you have of lovely donuts and pastries. Often good food is about the way it makes us feel as much as how it tastes. So good.

I no longer live in the St. Johns neighborhood (alas!), but I still do weekend visits to my old stomping grounds on occasion. So many things to recommend about St. Johns, but Tulip Pastry Shop tops the list. I've used this place for my husband's birthday cakes before (they've always done a wonderfully creative job and the cake is delicious), and I always popped in when I had cash for a little treat. Of course now they take debit/credit as well so that makes it even easier to feed an addiction. Surprisingly no one has mentioned their shortbread cookies, which is why I felt compelled to write my own review. These are the best cookies I've ever had. I DREAM about them. They're $3, which in my opinion is extremely reasonable for a very large, fluffy cookie laden with buttery goodness. The texture is absolute perfection - soft and a tiny bit crumbly. The family who runs this business is always friendly and eager to please. Definitely feels like a very special place with very delicious baked goods. It's worth a drive to St. Johns! Go run around Cathedral Park, grab a slice at Signal Station Pizza, and have some dessert at Tulip Pastry Shop. You won't regret it.

This place has the best maple bars anywhere. They're made with real maple, and the doughnut recipe which they are based on (and which is used for their other donuts) is a family recipe dating back decades that provides just the right combination of crispiness on the outside and flavorful yum on the inside. I have a hard time going anywhere else for a doughnut because this place has spoiled me so thoroughly. Jaymz makes amazing cakes, too. Call ahead at least a few days to a week and he'll get the creativity flowing. Their loaves of bread are excellent, their shortbread is excellent... they have sausage rolls - also excellent. The hardest part about this place is that it closes at 5 most days.

Great little bakery. Absolutely lovely miniature cakes. I like their rye bread (Though, don't rely on them to have anything specific). This is a place to order things or just show up and see what they have on the shelves. Hmmm... and donuts. Perfect little buggers.

This is a classic local business of which Portland is so proud of supporting. The business started in Seattle and moved south to Vancouver and then finally settled here in St. Johns. The really cool thing is that the hand painted Tulip Pastry sign has traveled with them to each new location and the business is still owned by the same family that started in in Seattle. The window display changes frequently and is a museum in itself especially when the owner puts out some of the old toys she has saved over the years. I echo the other comments that the maple bars are a food group by themselves. I have not been as impressed with some of the other selections. I am looking forward to trying some of their cakes.

I'm such a fat kid for this bakery. Everything is from scratch (and trust me, you can TASTE the difference) and they customize birthday cakes. What could be better than a 1st birthday dinosaur shaped cake made of green icing? Not much my friend, not much. Also, the people that run this bakery are so much fun. They'll totally chat you out the door (in a good way) and very much make you feel welcome. Make sure you take cash, no credit cards at this old gem!

I may have the my new favorite donut spot. Angel food batter for the donuts...heavenly!! So much better then the places down the street. Plus they do cookies and pastries and breads OH MY! Seriously I have not had a bad item from this place, cream filled horns, spinach and mushroom pastry, swirl rye bread done with rye and english muffin bread. Needless to say I plan on trying most everything here diet be damned. Why only 4 and not 5 stars? Because they want a life with their business and they're only open Tues.- Sat. Needless to say this will take some planning on my part to cover all the days of the week.

YUM! I hadn't been to Tulip since I was little and then I only remember the iced Tulip cookies. Well, today I was in St. Johns and in need of an afternoon pick me up. I was really hoping for a chocolate chip cookie but they didn't have any...so I settled for a Maple Bar! OMIGOD THE BEST EVER! Also, the staff is super friendly! I'll be back tomorrow!

Tulip Pastry Shop is a picaresque little bakery, that is nestled in the lovely "suburb" of St. Johns. The employees here are some of the friendliest people I have ever met in my life; and it's nice to find a bakery that hasn't given in to corporate greed and expansion. This place even used to be my mother's favorite pastry shop-and when it came to pastries, that woman was hard to please... But everything here is so delicious and the prices are so good, that she would always leave satisfied. These people definitely know what they're doing; and certainly know how to run a business. The pastries are some of the best that I've ever had- But be warned: They make everything in the back of their shop, so once the pastries are sold out, they're SOLD OUT (Until the next day, that is.) I bring people here every single time they come to visit Portland, and it's always a big hit. Yay for Tulip's!!!

This is a review by a vegetarian I've been in Tulip several times now and have been impressed with the quality and value of most items. Muffin, turnover, cream filled donut are all delicious. The cream puffs a little less so but still nice. The garlic bread I bought once was right out of the over and really fantastic fresh bread. But some of he garlic had burned on top. Tulip is a great little bakery to have in one's neighborhood. It's not quite destination baked goods but who the hell cares; if every 'hood had one of these no one would have to go looking for a good donut

Above average bakery goods with a bit of humor, and a lot of history. I Love the tasty maple bars, and the regular-ass glazed from here. They have baked goods that are holiday and event specific, and make cakes to order. The place has been family owned and operated for ages, so don't expect some 60 pound freakishly tiny person in skinny jeans and an attitude. You may get attitude, people have bad days, but for certain, you will get sweet treats. The window displays are also worthy of an on foot detour, even if the theme hasn't changed from the last time you saw it.

I was astounded by the kindness that was shown me today at Tulip Pastry Shop. I had never been to this little place before today, but my roommate had mentioned several times how she loved their half chocolate/half maple bar filled with creme. So I stopped in to grab her one after she'd been having a bad day and noticed as I was about to go in that the door said they only took cash or checks. I started to turn around and the man inside with an apron on waved me in enthusiastically. I entered awkwardly and informed him i couldn't buy anything due to the fact I only had 65 cents. However, when I told him why I'd come for just one donut he enthusiastically informed me that he could make me a deal for my 65 cents. So I got my friend's donut (which later made her day) and my heart was warmed by the generosity I was shown by the man running this quaint little shop in St. Johns. Voodoo who? I'm pickin Tulip.

We ate donuts both here and at Voo Doo while visiting Portland. This place was a million times better. The donuts were the best I've ever had and the owner, Art, was so sweet to my kids and to us. This is a wonderful, family-owned bakery. Do yourself a favor and stop by. The half and half donuts were amazing!

The Tulip Bakery, also around since the beginning of time, or at least the beginning of my time, was out of a lot of stock on a late Saturday afternoon, but we managed to score a few sweet and savory pastries and a loaf of bread. Our intention was that these would make up the basis of our Sunday morning breakfast, but some of the treats were not destined to survive that long. My personal favorite was the "Knot", a pretzel-shaped donut with icing and nuts. These people make Voodoo donuts seem like rank amateurs.

Best Maple Bars in St Johns. Maybe even in the world. Go early. Go with cash. I bring friends & family there before the farmer's market -- I've never heard a complaint only major compliments. Maple bars look deceiving. There doesn't appear to be much frosting but its the perfect sweetness ratio to the dough. Go there. You won't regret it.

I don't really share the "these are waaaay better than Voodoo" opinion. In fact, I like Voodoo donuts a bit better. However, this is a family pastry shop with friendly folks, and there's no line. So if you're in the neighborhood, want donuts (or cookies, or a variety of other pastry options), and don't feel a need for loud music, funky decorations, and tourists, this is a great option.

I've been here twice and both times the owner has made small talk with me while serving me delicious pastries. My daughter just likes to lick the frosting off the cupcakes but I don't mind because they are very inexpensive. Maybe next time I'll just ask for a cup of frosting. Chances are, he'd serve it to us with a smile!

Among the very few original St. John's establishments from my childhood, still alive and kicking. Along with Wayne's barbershop and of course the twin towers of Power, Wishing Well & Portland Rose, these are the sole survivors there in No Po proper. There are the franchise places still going (DQ, Burgerville, Freddie's, Les Schwab), but you really gotta root for the mom-and-pop type places. Of course Slim's is still alive and kicking as well--but in name only. This is NOT the Slim's of yesteryear... I was delighted to see Tulip was still in business this past March, and they were, in fact, the ONLY bakery that I called (and I called lots of 'em), that could get me champagne cake for my sister's b-day, on a very short notice. Truth be told, since I weaned myself off of donuts and other sweets while in adolescence, I haven't had much of a sweet tooth save for the very occasional craving. But this Champagne cake was unlike anything I've ever tried--- moist, delicious, light, and a little bit fizzy! The cake was a HUGE success for the b-day party, and was nearly instantly devoured! The only downer was that, while I was picking it up, some knucklehead stole my fishing pole out of the back of my truck. But blame for that can't be laid on the uber-groovy Tulip Pastry Shop. That's just vintage No-Po, fo' ya!!! Well done folks @ Tulip! We're so very glad you're still going strong.... ps: It's insanely amusing to see so many other Yelpers give special love to Tulip's maple bars..... those were my faves as well back in the day, along with the obligatory apple fritters...

I found this place on Yelp because I needed a birthday cake for my husband & daughter. We are visiting from out of state. Great place! Fun people working here and very helpful! We ordered the cake and ended up buying some pastries to take home. They were awesome - very much reminded me of bakery items that I grew up with and haven't found in a long time. The cake turned out beautiful and delicious. We bought more pastries and they were also delicious. We will return here whenever we come back to Portland.

So I second everyone's "They are amazaballs". Though I special ordered a cake from them and the worst thing happened. They forgot. I showed up and they couldn't find the order. Not only did they apologize a million times they offered to not only give it to me for free but to also bring it to my house. (I was running late and the get together was starting soon). We all makes mistakes....but they handled so well and cake was still AMAZING that I would recommend them to anyone looking for some baked goods.

This is my favorite bakery. They do solid, good, old-fashioned baking. They'll try any sort of cake - they've made us Volcano Cakes, complete with burning trees, Wii controller cakes, Christmas cakes, birthday cakes. Always delicious and lots of fun. Their bread is the best in Portland - light, soft, and NOT SWEET! I'm so tired of overly sweetened breads. My husband says their rye is the best he's ever tasted. I'm partial to their multi-grain and english muffin. I go out there weekly now to get fresh bread. And their donuts - just amazing. Other donut places have good donut batter, but the oil they use to cook them will be cheap or old. Not so with the Tulip. Perfect every time. Great yeast and cake donuts, no oily flavor, and they do delicious icings. My fave is the coconut twist.

ah, tulip, how do i love thee? nutritious? no. modern? hell no. completely adorable and kitsch? yes! apparently the donuts are awesome, but i haven't tried them myself. what IS awesome is the selection of old-school birthday cakes. i've found it the best-bet for bringing to a friend's birthday unannounced. you know, hypercolored frosting flowers and plastic decor and whatnot, and their named scrawled out in script...perfect! they also have adorable and season-specific sugar cookies. and a perpetually-seasonal window display. they also happened to love my dog and would come out to bring her a peanut butter cookie, which was terribly sweet. the guys here - all generations of the same family - are great, super-friendly, neighborhood fixtures. it's a cornerstone of st. john's culture, for certain.

This place doesnt even deserve one star but there is no option for zero stars so... stopped by here on our way to frolf based on the great reviews on here, which apparently they are paying people to give good reviews because their doughnuts taste like dirty cardboard. My friend got a half n half bavarian cream and it was ICE COLD like they just pulled it out of the fridge. I was too scared to eat my apple fritter so I just tossed it. DONT GO HERE! Whatever brain damaged people that wrote the good reviews obviously dont have taste buds.

I love this little place. We make a point to wander around in St. Johns every once in a while just to see what's new. Of course Tulip is not new at all and that's one of the things I love about it. @Amber, your Bavarian cream must have been in a cooler. Otherwise, it would have been a soggy, sloppy mess and toxic to boot. Educate yourself, girl. You were scared to eat the apple fritter? You should be scared to eat warm dairy. The apple fritter is my favorite and I always have it heated. It's delish. I love the home baked bread too. Sweet little place. I'm always happy to support small businesses.

I feel bad writing this review, because I really want to like Tulip Pastry. It's in a great funky part of Portland, the family that runs it are as friendly as noted in other reviews, and it's the kind of hole in the wall establishment you want to support. Unfortunately, the birthday carrot cake I ordered was not good; dry cake and too sweet frosting. I could have lived with the frosting, but a dry carrot cake, can't do it. Maybe there are better items to stop by for if you live in the neighborhood, but if you are going out of your way to order a cake for a special occasion, go somewhere else.

I ordered a custom cake for a birthday on short notice. It was BEAUTIFUL and a surprisingly good price. I cannot recommend this place enough.
