We finally got a chance to try the groaning board, the food is fantastic, the drinks are good, but they close early even on weekends. I would definitely recommend trying this place out. It's great to have a good restaurant in the south waterfront. I would just like to see it stay open until at least 11.

I've ate here twice and both times the food was really good and savory(not in a gross greasy way like some reviews). The first time we ate outside, it's such a treat to have that in SW waterfront now. Our waiter was outstanding and the happy hour drinks are an amazing value, try the sangria for a real treat. Fish and chips were a great portion. I think the cook hooked us up because the menu said two pieces but we each got three which was really cool. The atmosphere outside could use a little music or something on the tables letting people know it's open even when it's not bustling. The window are so dark you can't tell it's open often. Their is a open sign that is faint if you look in the right spot. The other thing that was kinda weird is the chief came out looking like a homeless person in the baggies clothes to hook us up with the great meal he prepared, and It was great. I know chefs many times don't usually get dressed up for work but that was kinda weird to come out looking like that at such a seemingly nice restaurant. The second time we tried the chicken pot pie to go and it was delicious. The problem is it's not a pot pie and not clear on the menu. It does say puff bread, but it also says pie and it's not a pie. You get two tiny little pieces of puff bread with a little cup of their pot pie filling, more like a really good chicken soup. Although I have zero complaints about the taste of the food, it was delicious, just know that you will be paying $16 a small cup of chicken pot filling soup with two tiny pastries to replace the normal pie. Some places could get away with this but not for this menu. Hopefully they keep up the good work and keep improving, it's great to them down here. Maybe they will have to raise the price to have an at least normal serving of this amazing comfort food but it would probably be worth it. I'll be back for sure and hope to update the stars and this review. They could be 5 stars in no time.

We came on Sunday at noon and it was pretty empty, yet our service was incredibly slow. The waiter was nice enough but not friendly or talkative. In terms of the food, it was typical bar food but really salty and didn't match the ambiance, which felt more stiff and formal. Overall odd experience.

Had an ok meal at The Groaning Board last Saturday evening. The place was almost empty which in itself is curious for typically the busiest night of the week. The risotto with fresh farmers market roasted vegetables was very good. The seared tuna Niçoise salad was atrocious. The greens were drowning in dressing. When we mentioned very politely that everything was good except the fact that the salad had way too much dressing, the waiter was incredibly off putting saying that whether it was too much was highly subjective. I guarantee the chef who designed the salad wouldn't want his or her kitchen staff to ruin an otherwise beautiful salad by drenching it in salad dressing. Dressing a salad should be a basic skill. Hiring untrained and unqualified kitchen personnel in foodie restaurants is a shame. Hiring "nice" but combative wait staff in foodie restaurants is a shame. My wife agrees that we would never go back to The Groaning Board. We also would never recommend to others. Thanks for reading.

Finally better dining choices in the South Waterfront! Had a great lunch here, fried chicken and the crab frisée salad were great items! The only disappointment was the broccolini, too much breading and not enough zing.

My fiance and I stopped by the Groaning Board for some drink prior to boarding the aerial tram. We were greatly impressed by the friendliness of the bartender, Joe V. He made us some specialty drinks from the cocktail menu including the Gibbs Street Gimlet, Portland Thistle, Sowa Mimosa, and the Bijou (from the brunch menu). The drinks were refreshing and new and Joe V was great. Also, he let us try some of his strawberry infused vodka.

Went Sunday evening. Looks like a local hang out with older folks. Happy hour menus are great. Tons of creative dishes - like chicken wings with yummy chilantro sauce. Clams were in some type of outstanding broth with a kick. Lamb meatballs were yummy. Braised radishes were little disappointing however. House red was pretty good - fruit forward with vanilla notes. My teen son had a meatloaf, which was excellent accompanied by shredded brussel sprouts and potatoes. This will definitely be one of our favorite hang out place for interesting food and drinks.

Took friends to try it again and was disappointed. Clam chowder is no a chowder, but more like a broth. My friend said it was too salty and couldn't eat it. The salad is very, very small for $11.00 and the cheese plate comes with two tiny pieces of bread. Overpriced and dishes are small compared to price.

Given their newbie status in what is undisputedly a culinary mecca of US cities, I was trying to give them the benefit of the doubt as a start up. Wrote an email to them afterwards which is included here. No response at all. I took the time to give them constructive feedback, they couldn't take the time to acknowledge. Too many better alternatives to deal with such deep start-up blues. Meal comments below. A few points from a pretty marginal brunch experience. First the good, wait staff and owner, super friendly and engaging. Good people. The rest isn't all positive, but here we go. After 4 years in PDX and a life of global eating, here are the comments. 1. coffee needs to be consistent and great to amazing to survive any PDX brunch experience. Just get it locally, brew it right and advertise such. 2. Eggs Benedict, totally meh, the meat would be best seared and slightly crispy, hollandaise, not so runny. Salt yes, not too much obviously but eggs need it. Mustard seed is a nice touch. Egg yolks almost cooked through. 3. We were one of two tables, the food needs to be much warmer, both eggs Benedict were room temp at best. 4. Fried chicken "sandwich", truly unremarkable. Try that of pine state, screen door or others and go from there. We couldn't even tell what the black charred thing on the skewer was with the chicken. 5. Salt and pepper in little dishes, nice touch, no spoons so WE HAD TO TOUCH. That's just kind of gross. I'm a public health doctor and continually wondered, " do they just throw all this out?" In pdx, even in locations in need of eateries, to survive and more importantly thrive you need to be better than alternatives. The Groaning Board fails on all accounts.

The interior is very nice. The booth seating is cozy and and pleasant for a party of two. The food was very disappointing. I had high hopes for the advertised "neighborhood pub with comfort food". The burger was way too big and way too rare even though I asked for it to be medium well. The fries were pretty good. Most dishes are very spicy. The fried chicken sand which would be so much better if it were just "normal". Most dishes are just a little too weird. How can you mess up a grilled cheese sandwich? Try adding sausage. I'm not sure how it has gotten so many positive ratings. I won't go back unless the menu improves drastically.

Delicious Brunch! We took the family in today and left very happy, as the food was really good. There were great choices on the menu, many with a touch of creativity, such as flapjacks with orange ricotta. The biscuits with mushroom gravy were excellent and with perfectly flaky pastry. This is a particularly satisfying vegetarian option. The challah french toast was great too. Even the decaf coffee was better than most restaurants can manage. The pricing on Brunch is better than Dinner, which has seemed a bit on the high side for us to be neighborhood regulars. Although, we have been twice to dinner and the food has been consistently delicious. Service was great. We will be back.

We really enjoy this place! The food is delicious, comfortable fare (despite the descriptions that can be intimidating for some). I love the different portion sizes! I cannot wait to try Sunday brunch so I can add all their delicious pickled things to a Bloody Mary! Highlights were the chicken liver mousse and corned beef tongue sandwich. And our lovely server.

So excited to have a new restaurant in the South Waterfront. We went on New Year Eve's and so happy that we did. The staff was very attentive, knowledgeable, and extremely nice. Since it was NYE the chef was sent out a amuse-bouche to start. It was a cauliflower soup and tasted great. We ordered the apple hush puppies and grumolo salad to start and both were very tasty. I had the My Thai cocktail, I really enjoyed it, but unless you love curry this will not be the drink for you. For the main course I had the Alaskan Cod and my fiance had the meatloaf. Both were fantastic, neither of the entrees needed any salt or pepper, the dishes were seasoned perfectly. Our server recommend wine for each dish, which we ordered, and the wine paired very well with the meals. For dessert the chocolate cake was ordered for sharing and it was very decadent and delish. Lastly. the chef sent out another amuse-bouche, chocolate hazelnut cookies, also delicious. During the course of the meal our water was regularly filled, our server, along with other staff stopped by our table to check on us, and the chef came out and said hello towards the end. The south waterfront needed another restaurant, and I am so glad that this is the one that opened as I will be a repeat customer for sure. Also, we were told the restaurant menu is expected to change up every few weeks depending on what is available locally to be sourced.

Had lunch at Groaning Board today. I understand that they haven't been open very long and that they are still trying to get everyone trained and acclimated. The menu is small but varied. Lots of fresh options. I had the pot pie. It was an interesting take on an actual pot pie. It was more like a chicken stew with a couple of flaky, buttery biscuits on top. Kind of a cross between a pot pie and chicken and dumplings. It was flavorful. The servers didn't know the menu very well and couldn't answer simple questions about soup selection or salad ingredients. Service was also a bit slower than it should have been based on how busy (or not busy) they were at the time. I didn't order any cocktails, but in looking at the cocktail menu, there were some interesting looking drinks in the $9-$12 range. A couple of bucks higher than what the same drinks would cost in many other Portland spots. There were also multiple misspellings on their food and drink menus. Something that doesn't go with a $12 cocktail price tag. It is a very nice space and has a ton of potential. I attribute most of their errors and inefficiencies to being a new restaurant. After they iron out the wrinkles, they should be a great addition to the South Waterfront. I live in their hood and expect to try it again at different times to get a more well-rounded impression.

I was very excited about this place since I live in the neighborhood. I had a glass of wine which was a little pricey but very nice and the pasta. The pasta desperately needed salt or spice. Additionally it came out lukewarm. I was disappointed. The service was great. It's still new so I plan to return to give it another chance. I hope they improve their seasoning.

This is possibly a better spot for a drink or dinner than lunch. Chicken pot pie was pretty plain, not very hot upon arrival and $16. I asked for some bread and received a small plate with a few thin slices, was surprised to see $4 charge. The service was good, maybe a bit over eager. Overall this feels like a new place with inexperienced but well intending staff. Hope to see this place mature over time.

My husband and I have eaten at The Groaning Board twice. The interior is nice. One night we were sitting in one of the side room and one of their emergency lights came on and was glaring down on us. It took a few minutes for the waiter to come by and then he had to get someone to turn the light off. A bit annoying, but it was resolved. The first time we ate there we shared the endive and frisee salad with dungeness crab and the Fried Chicken Sandwich with honey vinegar aioli. The chicken was good, but the aioli ruined it. There are so many places in town that make great chicken sandwich es and the one at the Groaning Board is just blah. The salad was decent, but I had to work hard to find the dungeness crab. The second time we went I had the salad again, my mistake, I was still searching for the crab. My husband had the Corned Beef Tongue Sandwich. He didn't like the flavor of it and it was not what he expected. I wouldn't call it comfort food. I feel he's a chef trying to make a mark for himself in a neighborhood where we just like a basic decent meal. I really don't plan on going back. I live in the neighborhood and I like to support business's we have here, but the chef needs to add some old fashioned comfort food. Please start with that chicken sandwich. Keep it plain and add some cheese, lettuce, tomato and a special sauce that is not sweet.

Went with a group of 10 from work for happy hour and we were all eager to try the newest restaurant on the South waterfront. It was a really disappointing experience. First, there was a guy going around asking us what we would like to drink. Turns out, he was only getting us water, even though we gave him our drink order and he did "OK" as if he was getting it for us. Next, it was nearly a half hour of sitting at our table before we even met our waitress. She struggled with taking our drink order and seemed frazzled by the concept of sperate checks. I also noticed menu items listed cheaper on their website than on their physical menu (e.g., chicken pot pie is $16 online, $18 on physical menu) and my coworker was charged $0.50 more for his beer on his bill than the price shown on the physical menu. Drinks and food showed up at the same time. The consensus on my side of the table was that the food was mediocre and portions were small for the price. My macaroni and cheese was bland, my coworker's roasted cauliflower appeared raw, my other coworker found the flavor and texture of the egg and corn bread unappetizing, and desserts were small and flavorless. Bottom line: Terrible service and overpriced mediocre food. We won't be making a second trip.

Ambience is nice but the food was bland. I had the risotto and it tasted like nothing. It was a Wednesday and on those nights they have half priced bottles of wine so that was good! Service was good but one of my friends orders was wrong. Need to improve the food.

So I really wish I could give them at least 4 stars. I gave 3 for several reasons. I think they have the potential to be great. For this location they need to keep the menu a little more basic....skip all the unusual additions to what they say are basic comfort style foods. This is more of a neighborhood place...not a destination restaurant. The meals I've tried have been good but might be better toned down a notch from quirky, then the prices maybe could drop a bit. They could possibly then be a true neighborhood place that the neighbors can afford to eat at regularly.

Try this local out for Brunch. Haven't been to the SW waterfront in a while and wanted to check out what is happening inn the area. The entrance to the restaurant is somewhat office building like, but they have done a good job of the interior with cool light fixtures, but a little funky and cold layout of the tables. The space is concrete and hard wood, and the sound echoes a little. The service was very pleasant and Johnny on the spot. Friendly staff and quick to respond to our needs. The food leaves a little bit to be desired though. The Bloody Mary was spicy, with a limited tomato juice base. The coffee was hot and rich - kinda important for a Brunch for me. We started with Blood Oranges and Honey yogurt - kinda disappointing. The Honey yogurt was only a small dollop, and was very thin with watery consistency. The eggs Benedict with pork cutlet was OK, needed spice and the pork was a little cool for the dish. The hollandaise sauce was a little broken. The hash with Sausage was actually nice with thinly sliced potatoes. I would like to say I would try again, but it is out of the way for us. There are so many great brunch locations in Portland, and so The Groaning Board has a long way to stand out in this competitive town. Atmosphere/vibe: 15/20 Food: 28/40 Service: 18/20 value: 14/20 Total: 75/100

Brand new place in the South Waterfront. A real restaurant! Replaces the sushi restaurant that was here for about six years. This neighborhood needs a good place to have a nice casual meal that isn't Subway or a burger. We went on the third night they were open. Nice eclectic interior with great light fixtures, beautiful wood slab community table and cozy high backed booths with lots of privacy. Made my reservations on Open Table. Our waitress Sam was great we were her first ever customers! She described the food as "American comfort with a twist". The chef is Italian. Great basic dishes with local ingredients and quirky spins. I had Grilled Cheeses which was a grilled cheese with a homemade sausage in it. Yummmm. Came with housemade chips that are delightfully light with a sweetness to them. My hubby got the pork and beef meatloaf. It came with a surprise cheese filling. Again, yum. They have a great bar menu and we had their version of a margarita. More orange than lime with a big mono ice cube. A nice twist on the classic. We will be back! Maybe we will sit at the cool bar next time! I hope they stay busy.

A nice addition to the south waterfront neighborhood. The Groaning Board offers an artistic take on comfort food classics. I have been here a few times including brunch, lunch, and dinner and they have many tasty options. For dinner, I loved their warm castelvetrano olives with thyme and blood orange as an appetizer and the Pumpkin Cavatelli was delicious. At brunch, I enjoyed their savory take on Eggs Benedict. Their house-made Bloody Mary mix is made with roasted veggies and has a dark smoky flavor. Their burger and fries are a tasty option as well, and the fried chicken sandwich on the lunch menu is so moist and tender. Their service is warm but a little awkward and the menu (and beer list) keep changing. They're still working out a few kinks, but I'm happy to have this place in the neighborhood.

This place is fantastic and a welcomed treat to the neighborhood. Great drinks, good ambiance and a delightful spin on classic entrees. My only suggestion is that they had more healthy options.

The restaurant was fortunate enough to hire Dolce Debbie out of Tampa. Amazing they were able to get her as she is a well trained chef with impeccable credentials. Her signature Gnocchi was a hit in Tampa and it is here. The Pork Belly is done as one should - with the perfect bit of savory and sweet. Shrimp and Polenta ground pork stuffed shrimp wrapped in bacon on a bed of creamy herbed polenta. This is a dish that would be southern but it is too delicious to be ignored. House made Cesar dressing is tangy and upscale but traditional. True to local - daily specials from the Farmers Market - today a local brandy for a cream sauce. For those who want to come here for Nachos and BBQ sauce - well - the restaurant has changed. Service was pleasant. Decor is cute. Food is amazing. I suspect in two years we will be back with the James Beard Award. Good move to get this Chef. She is turning it around

Super awesome space, great decor! Our waiter Matthew was so awesome, super outgoing and had great recommendations. Donny, I believe is one of the chefs and brought us out watermelon sorbet, which may have been the best thing I've ever put in my mouth. The food was good. Mac n cheese was delish. Onion rings and side salad were a bit bland but not bad. Service gets a 10! Food gets a 4. Will def be back.

Holy fuck batman. I had the brat and creamed cabbage. Wow there big fella. I came in my mouth on first bite. Can't speak for the rest of the menu but f that meal is a judge it's all super good. And the wait staff is super friendly.

This place is a train wreck waiting to happen if things don't turn around fast. At first when they opened, they tried to be trendy/upscale, and there is a bit too much of that kind of food in the neighborhood. It didn't work, customers dwindled and since then they change their menus every couple weeks but don't update the website to match what's actually being served. Look at the neighborhood, they are the ones that are going to be frequenting your restaurant and becoming your regulars. Their are a lot of people living here that are going to college at OHSU or work there. You need to start offering regular staple items such as big healthy salads, sandwiches, pastas, no one else in the neighborhood serves those. We went here for HH yesterday and it was awful. The pulled pork sliders and nachos had some nasty sauce on them that they tried to present as BBQ sauce. It smelled awful and it tasted awful and in no way was it BBQ sauce. The whole restaurant reeked the smell of it and we left with our clothes smelling that way. Yuck! Why does the chef feel they need to ruin something as easy as BBQ sauce? You are not good at inventing your own recipes so if all else fails go to Sysco or Costco and open a bottle decent barbecue sauce! I have listened to so many people in this neighborhood talk about the bad food here and betting this place will close it's doors within a year if they do not start listening to customers. You also need to have a staff. On 8-22 you knew that Zidell yards was having a big event with fireworks and so on and there were a lot of people wanting to go to your restaurant and standing outside and you closed your doors early because you said you didn't have enough staff. A good manager would've planned for that evening. Unbelievable! 2015-102

Great concept but dishes taste gross. Even after menu revamp the dishes are hard to stomach. We really tried to like this place since its local. Wrote to the owners: no response. Contacted owners via website: no response. My guess is that the crappy chef must be blackmailing the owner in exchange for working there because the food recipes and ingredients are terrible. Or, chef has head injury and is on the lease. You figure it out.

Me: "Why are there white spots floating in my water?" Waitress: "That's the sanitizer. Don't worry, it won't hurt you." No offer to replace the water. I now look at my soda with a very cautious eye.

Came here with 20 others for a fun dinner. Had really high hopes - the msnu is delicious sounding, but ultimately disappoints. It took about 2 hours to get through dinner; I had to order a soda twice before getting one at all, and it never saw a refill yet everyone was asked repeatedly if they wanted more water. Hush puppies looked good but not in the same quantity nor plating as in photos here - fewer, and they ran out so we didn't get enough anyway. Turns out, they were the only thing that people really seemed excited about. Cheese balls were like miniature popovers that just lacked flavor. Risotto was okay, but spent far too much time under the heat lamp or the warmer. Could tell based on the streak made by wiping residue after plating; it had become solid and skinned over. While it tasted alright, it was way too salty. Others who ordered the same didn't finish it or did so out of hunger and later commented it was overwhelmingly salty. There wasn't a lot of flavor, other than salt. Salt was the common element in dissatisfaction: even the burger was panned as being liberally bitch-smacked by the ubiquitous mineral. The meatloaf got good reviews, though did not look anywhere nearly as good as the photos here, which is a shame. Mac and cheese is pretty good. Would definitely like to eat more of that. Fish entrées were similarly appreciated by several, the grilled cheese looked disappointing, and judging from the amount left on the plate, tasted the part as well. The restaurant didn't seem terribly busy, and the table was booked well in advance, so I'm not sure how you run out of popular items (ran out of hush puppies, ingredients to make a 'signature' drink) and deliver them so haphazardly: auctioning off dishes as they come out 5 to 10 minutes apart is really cringeworthy. Also, the one cocktail with campari? It was passed down the line and it took 6 people passing on it to find someone who could actually drink it without making stinkface. I know cocktails are hit-or-miss, but campari is like a mother's soothing hug: it makes everything better. I wish the restaurant the best of luck - it's a cool space and has some good concepts. The execution just needs a bit of work.

Although the menu is pretty short, the fish & fries were really good.. The fish was perfectly cooked and the tarter sauce was very tangy. Even the cole slaw was good, and I don't really like cole slaw. Good service, too.

We finally made it out to try the food at The Groaning Board and let me just say WOW, we loved the food!! We shared the poutine fries that are topped with pork green chili and yellow tillamook cheese curds and I will be dreaming of them until we eat again (see what I did there)?! For the main event I had pork and beef meatloaf accompanied with potatoes, brussel sprouts, black trumpet mushrooms dijon, bacon and cream and crispy shallot!! It was so good! My sidekick had the hanger steak with chard and onion rings, also a great dish!! We had a gift certificate to use and forgot to bring it along with us and I was secretly glad we forgot so we can go again really soon! The service was excellent too!

The ambiance was nice. The waiter was kind. The food was cold, and under seasoned. We had to ask for salt and pepper and had to wait... And wait... But the waiter did replace my husband's meal. Over all we were unimpressed and will not be coming back.

This place did not start off so well as I live in SOWA and have tried it a few times but they have revamped the menu recently and I'm happy for them - and for me that they did. They're almost there, they really are. Apps are great especially the hot chicken bits and hush puppies but the portions are too small for the price. The servers are friendly too but not the best for sure - have had many errors over time from different servers. It was rumored when they opened that they would serve brunch but looks like that didn't develop. Too bad, I think that's something that could engender them to the neighborhood because there are too many other options during lunch and dinner. Pretty hopeful and confident they'll continue to improve but they are not a 5 star yet.

Our service was absolutely top notch, very attentive, friendly and helpful. Meatloaf was great, so much flavor and perfect texture. Chicken and biscuits were amazing as well as the standard burger, fries were pretty amazing as well. Definitely don't leave without the s'mores dessert, fantastic. We also had a few drinks, including the flamingo and some grapefruit honey concoction that you definitely could order 7 of they were just so good. The sangria was a little sweet for our tastes but still quite good. Overall definitely recommend both food and drinks from this spot!

I just moved to the area and I'm glad to have discovered this place. It has a nice ambience and the happy hour is fantastic. Lots of great small dish options. I do wish the main menu food selection was a little bigger, and that it offered some more options that aren't fried, but maybe I only say that because the food they have is great, so I wish there was more to choose from! With that being said, I've never had anything I DIDN'T like.

For a fresh new Restaurant, I believe they are doing great!! Love that they change the menu to include fresh, local, in season produce! Their burger is delicious as is their fish and chips! Hush puppies are yummy and today I had some puff pastry with burnt honey and orange sugar that hit the spot! Will keep coming back to try new things! Keep up the great work!

A new place which opened up on the south waterfront, had some good reviews on yelp so a bunch of friends decided to go and check it out. Its an interesting place, the decor is unique and looks inviting. They have an interesting menu, and a bunch of quirky dishes, but sadly they don't live up to expectations in terms of taste. for starters we got beef belly tartar and the brocollini which were decent, and the endive and frisee salad which had way too much dressing and very little crab meat. For the mains I got the Alaskan cod which had way way too much lemon in the base of the dish (fregola) and the cod itself was not seasoned enough and had very little salt. Plus three of us got the cod and the size of the fish was very different for all three plates. The mussels were ok and the pork meatloaf was ok, but nothing spectacular that will keep you coming back for more. All in all I was disappointed. For the prices they charge the food isnt up to the mark, I can get much better fare in Portland. However they are a new place, so I really hope they improve as they go along.
