Gosh, this place is so close to earning a five star review. The food is so beautifully presented and the flavors are complex and unique. I love that the chips and salsa comes with three different and delicious salsas. However, the chips were too salty for my taste and I found myself having to scrape a bunch of it off. My husband and I both ordered two different burritos. The chicken burrito was fantastic and was more than enough food for two meals. I also loved that they had Mexican beers on tap. My other small gripe was that the service was a bit slow, especially considering the restaurant wasn't busy at the time. I hate having to spent 15 minutes of my dining experience waiting for a check and waiting for my card to be run. It left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth after a great meal.

I am happy to say, January is a 5 star month! After having beers over at Tap That, the owner recommended going over to The Blue Goose. We did and were we glad! Truly some of the BEST mexican/Tex-mex fusion I have ever had...anywhere! The service is wonderful, the place is comfortable and the food...wonderful! Drinks were very good as was the portions... Put this on your radar and go!

Really tasty food and drinks. I had chips and salsa, a margarita and 2 roasted butternut squash tacos. Totaling $15 ($7.50 each). I can't say this place is very cheap but they have a good spread of food ranging from $5-13. My friend's quesadilla looked terribly good. - There was a gooey fried egg on top! The chips and salsa have separate charges but it's pretty worth it paying for thick, freshly fried chips and 3 types of fresh salsa. My margarita was deceptively strong. It went down a little too smoothly... yuuuuum. It made me think I was back in a touristy restaurant in Mexico again! The restaurant is easy to spot because of all the blue geese painted on the walls of the restaurant. The service is also very on top of it. The apps and salads are around $5-9, entrees are more around $10+ and the 2 taco dishes are $7.50. I was afraid ordering just 2 tacos wasn't going to be enough food but they were fairly substantial. My tacos were made with handmade tortillas with and filled with delicious roasted butternut squash, cotija cheese and salsa. I wasn't super hungry to begin with but was stuffed by the end of my meal. Obviously, if you're a big eater, you might want to order more than 2 tacos but if you want a reasonably sized, smallish meal, 2 tacos will be enough. Supposedly, we tend to eat too much anyway. :p

Yeah...not awful, but not great either. Chili Relleno is dipped in some kind of corn fritter batter, filled with stuff that tasted like ricotta and had the consistency of nacho cheese-whiz. Overly covered in sauce, guacamole, pico, etc. Food seemed like self-impressed SW fusion. Better stuff around the corner at the food carts. One indicator - at 7PM on Thursday evening there was one customer at the bar and zero at the tables. No repeat.

Wholly YUM!!! I LOVE this place! I have never been a huge Tex-Mex fan, but I am now! These were hands down the best chicken enchiladas I have ever had!!! Amazing flavor in ever bite! We sat at the bar and although it is a bit on the noisy side, this place has it going on. I highly recommend the Chicken Enchiladas and margaritas!

After hearing that Esparza's had closed, I was sad. But, to mend my broken heart, I gave The Blue Goose a try. So glad that I did. New Mexican food straight from New Mexico, or at least that's how it tastes. Two things you will find out about New Mexican food, queso and chiles. The tacos were mouth watering and the waitress was awesome. They are on top of everything here. Before our drinks were empty, we had our refills, same with our chips. OMG, the chips...so good! The decor is a bit different from Esparza's and thats probably for the better, since it has more of a fancy vibe, instead of the road side attraction vibe that Esparza's had.

great food, butternut squash tacos were delicious. The only bummer was the margarita was so sour I couldn't finish it! I'd come back for the food.

New Mexican cuisine in the former Esparza's location. A few menu items from the Southwest, including enchiladas (housemade corn tortillas) and dishes featuring Hatch green chile. Pandas drink beer first. Probably four or so rotating beers on tap. Boneyard Diablo Rojo for me. Full bar also available. Green Chile Cheeseburger ($10.50): This New Mexican staple got a gourmet facelift. 8 oz Angus beef patty, aged white cheddar, roasted Hatch chile, marinated tomatoes, and chorizo con queso on a brioche bun. It's served with some mild pickled vegetables. Delicious burger. Lots of queso, not a lot of green chile experience. It is a messy burger, so have a few napkins at the ready. Good service. If you like Southwestern food, I'd give this place a shot.

Wow, this place is so so good! This restaurant occupies Esparza's former location on 28th, and continues Esparza's Tex-Mex themed cuisine (well, with the hatch chilis, perhaps it's more NEW Mex). But holy crap, this place is so immensely, vastly superior to Esparzas. The name is an homage to the tile entryway to the restaurant, which says "The Blue Goose", the name of a long forgotten restaurant in this location The food is really incredible. I suppose I should caveat what I'm going to say about the food by pointing out that Tex-Mex food is a rustic cuisine. Tacos, enchaladas, chili, and the like. It's cowboy food, and cowboys are not fancy (well except for Buffalo Bill Cody, who was quite the dandy). But The Blue Goose's interpretation is refined and fresh and flavorful, emphasizing smoke and chilis. A friend of mine and I started with the smoked chicken wings, which are smokey and delicious and covered in a bright chili-lime sauce. For main course I had the smoked chicken burrito, which was covered in a deep, rich mole style sauce. It was over-the-top, 'so good you'll wanna slap yo mamma' delicious. My friend had the Enchalada Stack with smoked chicken, which was even better than my dish. As the name describes, it's a stack (of corn tortillas) layered with chicken and other goodness, and topped with avocado, pico de gallo, and a freakin' sunny side up egg! The fresh, delicious corn flavor of the tortillas shines through, with a backbite of citrus and smoke. This is some of the best Tex-Mex/New Mexican food I've ever eaten. I can't wait to go back to try the tacos and the brisket. Go to this place! If you loved Esparza's, you'll love The Blue Goose even more (my dining companion can attest to this). If you think Esparza's sucked (like yours truly thinks), you'll be surprised by what Tex-Mex can be.

I had an excellent experience at the goose last night with friends that I've had for a lifetime. I ordered the Prawn and Brie Soft Tacos. The combination totally exploded in my mouth. The burito was a grand Budapest. The third entree was a layered beef brisket was mouth watering. Thank You Portland for an incredible experience Sincerely a very happy customer.

What a treat! Started with chips and guacamole, plus it comes with three salsas. We had a great waitress who guided us through the menu. We had both enchiladas and the butternut squash tacos. All three dishes were exceptionally good. We were satisfied and looking forward to coming back. Please add Iced Tea to the menu!!!

I'm currently sitting that the bar of The Goose basking in the afterglow of one of the finest meals I have ever eaten. I must admit, part of my experience of the food is bound to the feeling that they have perfectly captured my life travels in the food they serve. First, they begin with a foundation in traditional New Mexican food. Then they twist the concept until the dish they serve is perfectly balanced between the traditional and the experimental. The food makes me remember the traditional recipes of my family in Albuquerque while concurrently experiencing surprise at how our food can be updated for a contemporary and trendy audience. I had the Brisket Enchiladas. Everything was perfectly cooked and freshly made. The homemade corn tortillas were soft yet firm while also being extremely flavorful. The brisket was worthy of the best smoked brisket from Texas. The red chile was spicy but not overwhelming. It was perfect for those of us who treasure both heat and flavor. The specialty cheeses and green chile aioli add a sharpness to the meal without overpowering it. To my surprise I only mildly missed pinto beans and rice. The grilled corn more than made up for their absence. Various members of my family are in the restaurant business in Albuquerque. They run well know establishments. The whole family prides ourselves on our recipes. As the inheritor of this tradition I'm particularly proud of what New Mexican food is and what it can be. I could never have imagined that a restaurant in Portland, OR could evolve our cuisine into something so amazing. The recipes here could teach New Mexicans precisely what our food could become if we were to embrace the best aspects of the experimental and fusion food culture. I highly approve.

Um, hello most delicious tacos I've ever put in my mouth! We came here on a Thursday evening when The Goose was operating a limited menu due to Hood to Coast coming up. I was bummed since I really wanted to try the burger, but instead got some brisket tacos that rocked my world! I wasn't super impressed with the guac (honestly, I can make a better guac) and was a little bummed by that, but the taco was SO GOOD. Service was prompt, non-invasive, and friendly. I'll definitely be back here to try more tacos and some day, that burger!

  • Chris S.

Tasty food, friendly servers. Try the grilled corn. This is not, however, Tex-Mex as claimed by Yelp. It's far too frou frou chichi for that. I would call this New Mexico-style food.

I grew up 90 miles from the border of Mexico and this place felt like home! Oh my god, the tacos were so delicious. And I had a bite from my friends Green Chile burger, dayumm. I had the pork shoulder taco and the pork was perfectly tender and seasoned. The corn tortillas were authentic! Amazing chips, salsa, and queso. Plus the margaritas..don't even get me started. Blood orange & ginger?! Kiwi, rose! Yes. Just yes.

Been here twice now. I've had the beef brisket tacos both times and I like that they are so unique for this town. Smokey but not too smokey, full of flavor which is critical for me since I eat everything pretty plain. The homemade chips are to die for, so addictive!! Husband tried the green chili burger this time. Looks like a big hot mess to me but he said it was awesome. It held together even though it was a drippy packed burger. Super rich so he paid for it later with a little heartburn but that's just him and he says he'd do it again. It's not going to be your every day burger but best green chili burger he's had since Colorado. I'm simple. I'll keep coming back for tacos and wonderful chips. The only odd thing is the limited menu at the bar and outside in the summer, burger is not on it.

This place is off the charts and above 5 Stars people. OMG is an understatement. Food, service, price, atmosphere, everything was absolutely perfect. 1st time here. Saw the ratings, reviews and pictures and have been wanting to come here. If you have not yet been here, get up and go. We had quesos, guacamole and grilled corn cobs for apps. Then the stacked enchiladas x2 with brisket and asada tacos. All for $20 per head plus tip. Best meal in 4 weeks of eating out in Portland folks. Don't miss this place.

ZOMG! This is my new favorite Mexican place. First, lurve the décor, the bar is vintage like something out of Carson City in dark wood, cow skulls hang from ceiling with lighted eyes. The margaritas are strong and not too sweet made with agave. 1.5 of them put me under the table. The chips are fresh and made in house and served with three homemade salsas. The waitress was super nice to refill the chips piping hot fresh so we could devour more salsa. I ordered the papas starter and it was covered in queso with chorizo. As many others have said, the queso was definitively a highlight. My friend's enchilada was two meals with an avocado and egg on top. Oh, I have to say my absolute favorite dish with the corn or elote which had the best cojito and ancho chili sauce on it. I am afraid it maybe seasonal as is the heirloom tomatoes that I am definitely going back for next week.

The food as good and well priced. The atmosphere was good, though the outside seating needs to be upgraded. The servers were five stars, really; their service was great. Here's why The Goose only gets three stars: their bartender. My wife and I have never had a more rude person wait on us ever (and that's a big statement since we're both in our mid 40s). 'Mr I've got Tattoos and a Beard' (very original) made us a couple of margaritas that were not so great. I asked him if he could just add a little more tequila into mine and, bang! went his attitude! He immediately took a posture of 'are you questioning my bar tending?' I left him alone at that point, not saying another word. Two minutes later they guy comes to our table and slams a glass of tequila on our table and says, 'Here's your drink!!!'. We didn't say a word and just stared in shock. He returns to our table a minute later and slams down a $6 bill!!! WTF?? Again, we didn't say a word but then thought to get a manager involved. The manager was very nice and apologized for his behavior. Bottom line: food good, food servers great, manager very nice, bartender very rude and should not be in a customer facing position with his fragile emotions.

About a week later and we figured we would check out the place again. It was running smoothly the first day but they were our of the brisket plate and had limited soft drinks. Both of those items have be fixed. Since they were out of the brisket on our first visit I ordered that and my wife had a smoked chicken taco. We got the chips and salsa again as well. The chips and salsa were really good. The smoked brisket with porkbelly beans...... Was not as great as I thought. The beans were very very good. But the brisket was just good... Not great. Compared to the other items we have had it was. On the bland side. And there was a lot of it too. This dish would have been really good with about half the meat, some more salt, spices. I DID eat it all though. My wife's smoked chicken taco......Wow!! So here is what I have learned so far... Order ANY of the tacos.... You will not be disappointed.

So. Good. Everything we have ordered here has been so delicious. The Blue Goose had been operating in Esparzas old location for several months before I made it by - they are closed on Sunday/Monday which seems to be the days I crave Mexican food. I've tried tacos, quesadillas, and both chips & queso and chips & guac. They were all so. good. I would go there regularly just to grab chips and guac and dip and a margarita. (Though the margarita was a little small for my tastes.) I haven't had an opportunity to try the outdoor seating yet but the few times we've been we sat at the bar and had great service. It's unportland of me to say so, perhaps, but I don't even miss the roadkill hanging from the ceiling. Blue Goose cleans up the joint, and presents something tasty.

We loved The Blue Goose! I had really liked Esparza's, and had been sad to see it go, but that this is what has come in its place more than makes up for it. They kept some design elements and a similar cuisine - but really upped the ante. It's much more modern and fresh looking inside, with a fun, youthful vibe while still seeming refined. And the food was great. We had the queso and several varieties of taco - their housemade chips and tortillas are amazing. I also had a strawberry basil margarita which was perfect! On top of all this, we received such kind service. My elderly grandmother was with us so we had to wait for a booth, which took some time - but they were very apologetic and considerate - keeping us informed of how much longer it would be, bringing us drink menus, etc. Everyone from the host to the waitress to someone I assume might be a manager, and even the bartender were just unfailingly friendly and pleasant. I will definitely be back, and I'm bringing friends!

So good! The chili relleno was so delicious!! Spicy and flavorful. The chorizo queso was so good, the guacamole was fresh and yummy - the arugula avocado salad was very fresh and delicious with just the right amount of spice - the house margarita was excellent too! Definitely will be going back!!!

My wife and I came in early about 4pm and so it wasn't too busy, but the server was outstanding. Not a great place menu wise for vegetarians, but our server had them make her a butternut squash burrito, which my wife thought was outstanding and I had the Brisket stack and it was so good. Had a few Margarita's and they were very good. Normally there is too much mixer or too much tequila, but we both thought it was the perfect drink. Great music in the background, we will be back.

We got there almost 9:30. We didnt know they close at 10:00. We stay there untill 10:30 I felt so sorry for the server when I found out closing time later. Service was fantastic. Food was very good that homemade toltilla chip and sala was sooo tasty I had to make it togo becuase we didnt finish next morning it was still good.

Soooo pleasantly surprised. I had the brisket enchilada, and yes, I was skeptical; however, they won me over. Bravo to the chef! That was one of the most scrumptious and delicious enchiladas I've ever eaten... A huge compliment considering I was raised in southern New Mexico where enchiladas are not considered a food, but an everyday ingredient. I cannot call the food "authentic," but I CAN call that enchilada fricking amazing! Definitely coming back. Cheese and chorizo dip, and green chili cheeseburger were a little less impressive.

  • Karen R.

Service was great! Atmosphere nice. Food a disappointment. Salsas were bland. Guacamole was bland. Enchiladas topped with egg. Good addition having the egg but overall very bland and over use of smoke flavoring. Tacos had little texture and no bold flavors. Caesar salad was good. Probably won't return.

Went back again, this time had the burger. WOW. I was a sceptic considering I like my burgers very American and trashy and in all honesty I probably wouldn't have ordered it. But WOW. The taste was familiar but all so different. The marinated tomato tasted like candy in contrast to the subtle heat from the chorizo cheese crack the burger was saturated it. The burger meat itself was top quality and cooked perfectly. The bun was also a perfect match to suck up every dribble of cheese left on the plate. WOW. The pickled carrots and peppers were a great accompaniment.

The Goose is now one of my favorite places. First visit - the drinks are a little pricey, but they're made from top shelf ingredients so it's not unreasonable. They have some innovative takes on margaritas (chiles, etc.). I went with a friend, planning to split the green chile cheeseburger, but an examination of the menu motivated us to split the enchilada that included pork shoulder. All I can say is - holy mackerel. What a great meal! Even after splitting the dish, we were stuffed. The salsa is excellent, the guacamole is excellent, the chips are outstanding, the drinks are damn good. I will be back.

Soon after the Willamette Week released its '50 Plates', I visited Blue Goose with my wife and good friend. Unaware that yet another restaurant touting New Mexican food was open, I was pretty excited. The supply to meet the demand of New Mexican cuisine has surely sprouted legs in Portland, and with that comes several restaurants brave enough to say they make it. However, they know full well native New Mexicans like myself will go there, expecting the culinary nostalgia that authentic New Mexican food brings. Alas, Blue Goose falls ridiculously short of authentic. I can't even call their food New Mexican. Yes, I'm referring to that heaping mess of a "green chile cheeseburger" that Wilamette Week gave the nod to. (Sorry WW, just ... no.) Yes, i'm referring to the green chile cheese fries. Yes, i'm referring to the level of and flavor of "spice" they offer. NONE of this is authentic New Mexican food. The only way a person could ever think that any of Blue Goose's "New Mexican" food was genuine was if they had never even stepped foot in New Mexico. I think their attempt at making New Mexican food begs the question: is the owner from/or has ever lived in New Mexico? When arriving at the Blue Goose Yelp© page, I noticed that Blue Goose says it's a Tex-Mex restaurant: perhaps it's better they stick to Tex-Mex. p.s. Everyone seeking New Mexican food (or just good food in general!) should go to La Panza or Pepper Box Cafe - places run by native New Mexicans with legitimate New Mexican cuisine, drinks, and atmosphere. Not to mention authentic green chile cheeseburgers, ones that does not entail ruining it with chorizo con queso, which is not New Mexican at all.

Favorite new restaurant. The chef is clearly talented. I crave the dishes obsessively. I've been back several times since it newly opened. The place itself is aesthetically pleasing and all the servers are charming. If I had one wish I would recommend smaller tapas, only because I want to try everything when I'm there but that gets expensive and excessive. Smaller plates could accommodate that.

  • Yesenia R.

This place is amazing! Everything is made fresh to order. We had chips and salsa to start followed with adovada tacos and a pork burrito. I wanted to lick the plate! Must try at least once in your life!

Blue goose, yes please! While I had never heard of New Mexican cuisine before I am now a huge fan. Had dinner out with the ladies during their soft opening. We started with the fresh homemade chips and three tasty salsas, the potatoes and thirst quenching margaritas. The salsas all had different flavor and depth and it was fun to mix and match. The potatoes, think Poutine but somehow even better! I ordered the Carne Asada tacos which were delightful and the butternut squash tacos are something dreams are made of. I can't wait to go back and try the rest of the menu!

The food was amazing! It is one of the best burritos I've ever had. The only issue we had we orders chips and salsa, I am fine paying for them, yes they card. It was very good and our waitress asked us if we wanted some more salsa so we said yes. Well then the bill came and they charged use an extra $3 for the second helping of salsa. It's fine that they charge but she never mentioned it and we didn't ask, she offered. Will I go back? Yes! The food is great!

The Blue Goose serves up your classic Tex Mex cuisine with a modern twist. A unique and fun place where the food and service are absolutely top notch. The owners have really taken the time to transform the space into a warm and eclectic restaurant & bar with an awesome vibe. With an amazing collection of unique tequila's behind the bar, the bartenders can mix up a mean pretty mean margarita! Try the Cucumber & Prickly Pear margarita - delicious. I went with a larger party of 6 and there was plenty of seating at the rear of the restaurant. We ordered a ton of food to share. Items not to miss out on are: The Smoked Chicken Wings, Chorizo Queso with tortilla chips made fresh TO ORDER, Green Chili Cheeseburger & the Roasted Butternut Squash Tacos. My dinner at the Blue Goose was absolutely perfect and I look forward to eating there again very, very soon!

The place looks great, dark wood but a lot of light. Had the stacked smoked chicken enchilada which was very tasty, very filling and fun to eat. Melba got the carne asada tacos but doesn't like rare meat, so the waitress gladly let her switch to smoked chicken tacos. Seeing on the menu that tacos were 2 for $7.50 but these are huge with quality ingredients. Had the deep fried corn on the cob, which was good, but the best part was the hot red sauce that we save for out our entrees. Still, the best part was the service, very nice people.

  • Brent C.

Effing delicious. It's kind of like Tex-Mex and New Mexican had a crazy delicious baby, and from that culinary womb springeth forth red chile brisket enchiladas. And pork belly tacos. And a Green Chile Cheeseburger that... well let's put it this way. If you don't think the burger at The Blue Goose belongs on a Best Burgers of Portland list, it's because you haven't tried it yet. Also noteworthy: the queso dip (straight up Tex-Mex delicious) and the smoked chicken wings (small portion, but still worth ordering). There are so many regional variations on Mexican cuisine across California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas, that when something from one of the other styles pops on the radar, it's worth celebrating. Personally, I believe New Mexican food is the most underappreciated regional cuisine in the country. So, The Blue Goose-- a restaurant most people don't even know exists--deserves high praise. As good as it is, this place is undoubtedly the worst marketed restaurant in Portland. First of all, are they called The Goose (as in their official Yelp profile) or The Blue Goose (as most people refer to them as)? Well, I would check their website, but they DON'T HAVE A WEBSITE! I believe the place is actually called The Blue Goose, named in honor of something or other about the blah blah blah, I have no idea. All I know is that it's impossible to find online AND the name of the restaurant gives you no indication of what kind of food they serve. The place is kind of small, so a party of two is going to have a lot better luck here than a large group. If you're a twofer, then sidling up to the bar is usually pretty easy. If you need a four-top, then you'll have to wait for one of the booths to open up (an endangered species at this place). And a large party will have to sit at the community table at the center, which is going to be a crapshoot.

The space is really pretty. They did a great job in there (the bar is a heavy beautiful piece even without the extensive selection of mezcal and tequila on display). The queso is just as good as everyone says it is. The burger (covered in queso) is tasty, the grilled corn is solid, and the house margarita is just what you expect. Why, however, in the world would they make their al pastor with pork tenderloin? I ordered it, took a bite, and immediately thought I was given the wrong meat option. It was about as dry and lame as boneless skinless chicken breast cooked with a can of pineapple. I asked the server, and she said "that's how we make our al pastor." So...poorly. They make it poorly. Also, I have rarely seen hostesses so not-very-good at their jobs. A flock of well-dressed, pretty, smiling girls with no knowledge of how to properly handle a waitlist. It's a small dinning area. At most you need an anchor and a runner (for a busy night). Tables should not be glaringly empty as you wait to see if 3 parties that walked away to wait at a different location are maybe, possibly coming back even though they didn't answer their phones.

What a treat! The food was delicious and we will be back for sure. A little dessert like a sopapilla would have been a great end.... Although we were pretty full of goodness. I wish we took pictures of the stacked chicken enchiladas. I guess we're going back for more.

Oh I love me some Tex Mex. It was a real bummer when Esparza's closed...that is until I found out that the current restaurant in the same location is Tex Mex. Recommended by my brother, I tried the smoked brisket enchiladas, which were to die for. Everything else we ordered were equally as excellent. The decor is a subtle Tex Mex, very comfortable. Our server was absolutely superb. I'll be back!

The pulled pork tacos here are the best! Also, the waitresses were so friendly, I thought they were going to stop working mid-day and just sit down with us for a drink or two. Even though I stayed outside with my dog, the vibes all around on this place was top notch!

I've eaten at the Blue Goose now several times, and each visit brings more tasty and delicious cuisine! The fresh fruit margaritas are amazing and the selection of tequila is the best I've found in Portland. Hands down the best Queso I've had...could just have that alone...but goes better with the homemade chips. The bartender and the staff were really nice and helpful too. Looking forward to my next visit one day soon! Enjoy...

There is queso in Portland. Let me repeat: THERE IS QUESO IN PORTLAND. I just moved here from Austin, where queso is its own food group, and spent the months beforehand stalking Portland Mexican restaurants for queso on their menus. Almost none have queso, and those that do terrifyingly call it "cheese dip." NOPE. But I made a new friend, and as I was lamenting to her how much I missed queso, she mentions this new place that just opened! Blue Goose reminds me so much of Austin Tex-Mex, which is very New Mexican-inspired anyway. Lots of the menu items feature green or hatch chiles, the tacos are served street-style, on a corn tortilla and with crumble cotija instead of shredded cheese, and there's even a spicy margarita on the cocktail menu. My house margarita hit the spot perfectly, and my friend's jalapeno-pineapple (I think) margarita was delicious, with just enough spice to be interesting. We split orders of the smoked chicken tacos and the butternut squash tacos, both of which were wonderful. I'm not usually into veggie-only tacos, but the butternut squash was the real winner for me. The street corn is generous enough to share (one ear cut into 3 pieces), and the queso is pretty damn good. It's advertised as containing chorizo, but that seems to mean just a few crumbles at the bottom of the bowl. I almost thought they'd left it off, but the queso doesn't need it anyway. The service was pleasant, if a touch slow, and the prices were very fair. I can't wait to go back.

Yep! I agree with the other 5 star reviews - this place is DELICIOUS! The place I've been searching and searching for in Portland and alas have found Really tasty tex-mex - I guess you can say New Mexican food. We had the Butternut Squash tacos, the stacked Chicken Enchiladas and the corn - oh and yes - those chips - AMAZING! Tons of flavor and just down right satisfying. Had a margarita while waiting for the food and that was on point too! My only critique was that the music they were playing was loud and sort of electronica which didn't really fit the ambience but service was great. Oh and one odd thing - I left my backpack there and tried calling several times and phone did not pick up (this was at 8:30 at night) so that was slightly frustrating but outside of that the food wins big! Had a meal and paid double the price at another Mexican place in town and this wins by a mile!

Wow - amazing food! Been back several times and the food and drinks are always consistent. Very flavorful and wonderful proportions of food. My go to spot for Mexican!! I've tried so many items on the menu and they've all been truly my favorite, until the next time! Try the chicken skin tacos and the corn on the cob!

Chips are homemade, crisp and hot. Not free. 3.5 for chips & salsa. I'm of the opinion that chips & salsa should be included at a Mexican joint. Had a margarita-lime, it was standard nothing special. The al pastor tacos- first it was a perfectly cooked pork tenderloin, but the pineapple was cold and part of a relish on top. Not al pastor! That being said the home made corn tortillas were thick and delicious. Good and efficient service. Will not be my go to Mexican joint but definitely worth trying. Will go back to try the burger and queso. Rating: Food 3 Service 4 3.5 total, so I'll round up.

Really good food and drinks..all drinks are made with fresh fruit and sweetened with agave. No nasty margarita mixes here! I had the smoked chicken tacos, they were excellent! We also got chips and salsa, which came with three different types of salsa, all of which were very good! The only reason that I can't give 5 stars is because we came with a group of 12 and they couldn't accommodate us all sitting at one table, we had to sit at separate tables, so it's better for a small group.

Food and drinks were delicious. Unfortunately the service and experience was so incredibly rushed, and consequently unpleasant, I don't know that I'll be heading back soon.

We stopped here for dinner last night after reading the reviews and wanting to see what the old Esparza's had become. They have done a beautiful job renovating the place and it had a great feel to it. We sat at the bar. I had a honeydew habanero Margarita which was awesome and the pollo verde tacos. The smoked chicken in the tacos was tender and delicious and the warm house made tortillas were incredible. My husband had the brisket enchiladas and loved them. Not sure what Matt M was talking about in his review last week but our Margaritas were perfect with top shelf tequila and the bartender who waited on us was very attentive, nice and knew what he was doing... I went back and checked Matt M's other reviews and they all complain of being shorted on the booze~sounds like he may have a problem unrelated to this restaurant). We enjoyed everything about this place and plan to put it on our list to return to soon.

the service was great but I wasn't overly impressed with the food overall. The chips and salsa were great. the chips were fresh and in house made. The corn on the cob appetizer looked awesome and delicious, but i wasn't that impressed with the taste. I also ordered the chile rellanos with side of corn tortillas. The cheese inside the peppers was salty and looked like a vomit. It should look like melted fresh mozzarella. I frequently ordered this at various mexican joints and I have never had an issue with the cheese until now. The corn tortillas were thick and I couldn't tell if I got the corn or flour tortillas. The presentations were great but they need to work on the taste.

THE BEST smoked pork belly tacos I've ever had, hands down. Will make the +one hour drive for them again, and again, and again.

We randomly stopped by here on a Friday night while waiting to sit down at another restaurant. I have to admit that I was pleasantly surprised. The atmosphere is laid back and the staff does a good job to maintain this vibe. The food and drinks are reasonably priced. We will be back for sure.

One of our favorite restaurants! Great staff, amazing margs and to-die for tacos. I highly recommend their arugula salad (so flavorful) and literally any of the tacos - the tortillas are hot and freshly made. I will say that they can be a bit too spicy for me (and even my boyfriend, who can really handle spice!) and I'm always SO FULL when I leave - but maybe that's a good thing :)

Blue goose rules! Amazing New Mexican dishes that make me practically drool just thinking about them. I cannot recommend the grilled corn, stacked chicken enchiladas, or stuffed peppers enough! Spicy, intense flavors that will keep your nose running and your heart pounding. Seriously delicious food at a very reasonable price. Friendly staff and great service too!

We had a very disappointing experience here the other night. It was a beautiful evening and we were looking forward to eating at one of their outdoor tables. However, the hostess informed us that they only serve a limited menu outside; to get the whole menu, you must eat inside. OK, we'd be happy to but please don't put us at a high table perched on uncomfortable stools. A booth with uncomfortable wooden seats will be much better. Would you like a beverage to start? Indeed, a nice IPA would be great. You're out of that beer? OK, I'll have something else. How about the hard cider you have on tap? Sorry, you're out of that as well. A margarita will be fine, and it was very good, I have to admit. Now for the food: The chips and salsas were tasty but overpriced. $7.50 for a handful of chips is outrageous. Then we waited almost a half hour to receive the entrees. I ordered the chicken posole burrito. It was gigantic but kind of a strange mishmash of ingredients and a soggy burrito. My husband, who likes very spicy food, ordered the stacked chicken enchilada. It was slathered in an extremely hot verde salsa that was so strong it completely overpowered the other tastes in the dish and sadly obliterated any flavor the egg might have imparted. I'm sorry, but there are just so many wonderful places to eat on that street and in the neighborhood. The Blue Goose will be very low on our rotation list.

This isn't a five star review for the establishment (although it is quite good), this is a five star review for the corn. 5 bucks for a piece of corn may make some people think twice but DON'T. Holy crap. Soooooooo good.

I had the brisket which was awesome. A side of potatoes and cream cheese and some bacon wrapped chili peppers for an appetizer which were really good. Beer selection is OK mostly Mexican .

First visit since the Blue Goose moved in. Nicely improved decor. Intriguing menu. Three of us. Had the chips and salsa to start. Very good. Then the corn in chile oil and cotija cheese. Also very good. I then had the beef brisket tacos. Absolutely fantastic. My wife had relleno of the day - butternut squash and goat cheese. Very good. Son had stacked enchilada with chicken. Very large portion and he ate it all - must have been excellent. Servers were sociable, pleasant and attentive. Highly recommend The Blue Goose. We will be back soon.

Okay, I don't know what the food "is" here (Tex-Mex? New Mexican? Neither, really). But it's good....the queso is good, the tacos are decent (tortillas are kinda weird). Whatever. The reason I give them three stars is because they can't get their service together. I've been 3x. Each time, there are open seats/tables - yet they make you wait. The tall blonde appears to be the worst staff manager (which appears to be all she does) I've ever witnessed. Every time I go, we just end up standing around waiting for them to seat us at one of the (open) tables. Very inefficient. And getting annoying.

I am very sad to say that the Blue Goose was a huge disappointment! We arrived around 5:00 PM on Saturday night (their second day open) to a nearly empty restaurant. The hostess was strangely awkward and the whole place felt uncomfortably quiet. The waitress came around and right off the bat told us that the soft opening had been the night before and they had run out of food. She next told us that they could offer everything listed on tonight's menu but were out of the brisket. I thought, huh out of brisket? They have only been open for an hour! We were surprised to see that they had removed the old four top tables in the center of the restaurant and replaced them with high top tables that were more conducive to a bar. We really thought it was more of a bar environment than restaurant. We ordered chips and salsa to start. There were 3 salsa types: a basic pico, a tomato based salsa, and a chili verde. The salsas were good..nothing great....just good. My husband ordered the stacked enchiladas and I ordered the chicken tacos. The food was SO hot with the hatch chili's that I was unable to finish mine. And then the smoked flavor of the chicken was so strong that's all I could taste (for the next 24 hours as well even after brushing). I went through 1 glass of water and 2 diet sodas! By the way.... No fountain soda was available only caffeine free diet coke in a can. My husband who LOVES spicy food said his was WAY too hot. All he could taste was the hatch chilis and no other flavors. We thought, well maybe we will let the waitress know what we thought so when she came around we mentioned how excruciatingly hot the food was. As we were speaking the owner walked by and the waitress said, "hey you might want to listen to this". We explained that we had anxiously awaited their opening but that the food was simply TOO HOT. So hot I had 3/4 of my taco left on my plate. The owner was very pompous, rolled her eyes, and said "we will try to cool down those chilis" and walked off. We live in the neighborhood and faithfully support the local restaurants. We were so sad to see Esparzas go but were thrilled when we learned a new place was opening. I would think an owner would want to hear our thoughts.....more so the chef! Did he taste his food? It was unedible. I'm not sure why she thought by blowing us off was good business. After all, this place is in a neighborhood and would be supported by the locals. Seems like she would do anything and everything to please especially on the second night! Needless to say we won't be back. Very disappointed!

So yummy and the staff was top notch. Super helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. I liked that it was classic Mexican with a bit of a flare. Definitely want to go back for some tequila tasting. The one bummer...and it's kind of a big one in my book. You have to pay for chips and salsa. Big thumbs down for that.

My husband and I had a date night at the Blue Goose a couple of weeks ago and it was awesome. I am so happy we got a recommendation to check it out. They have a great potatoe dish that they made vegetarian upon our request. The chile dish was top notch and the drinks were perfectly strong. Our absolute favorite dish was the corn, I wish I could eat it everyday. I will definitely be visiting again very soon!

Great place! I've had almost every one of the entrees, and they're all amazing. So much depth of flavor. Chips and salsas are great, strong margaritas, good service. Best southwestern style food I've had.

What a pleasant surprise! I went to Blue Goose with some girlfriends after having drinks down the street. We shared the queso with chorizo which I am totally obsessed with now and I had the sweet potato tacos for myself. They were HUGE and I ended up bringing one of the tacos home to my husband. Pleasant waitress and they did a good job re-doing the interior of the space. They were out of the Tequila Moscow Mule and Guacamole, both of which I had been planning on ordering when I sat down, but I guess that means I'll just have to go back!

This may be my new favorite eating spot in Portland. Their food is amazing. Flavors to die for. Great spices and hand made tortillas were unreal. Great improvement over the old establishment that was there. I had the blood orange margarita and the cucumber margarita and both were very good. They use great tequila here and not the cheap stuff. I will definitely be coming back for more on a regular basis.

This place is amazing. They smoke their own meat so it ends up being incredibly flavorful and melt-in-your-mouth delicious. The chips are piping hot and freshly prepared, the drinks are original and tasty, the apps are friggen bomb (especially the corn. Eat it. Trust me.) - this is not the place to go if you're seeking chips from a warmer or a plate of flavorless beans and rice. This IS the place to go if you want creative, scrumptious, face melting, flavorful Mexican food. Order one of everything!

  • Sarah M.

Blue Goose is outstanding Mexican food! House smoked meats, tortillas and infused tequila! We can't get enough of the stacked enchiladas with sharp cheddar cheese and a perfectly fried egg on top! Wowzers! Go before it becomes the next Por que No and lines form down the block! Trust me it's headed that way ...

My wife and I each had two tacos and traded so we could find out what we liked. Both the Smoked Chicken and the Porkbelly tacos were really great but a bit heavy on the Hatch chiles. The corn tortillas themselves were incredibly silk soft, possibly the best in town. The bartenders on both of our visits have been great. Nice addition to a neighborhood already loaded with great spots

Wish I could be more enthusiastic about this restaurant. We arrived at 5:00 - nobody else in the place - and were seated at an extremely uncomfortable table at the very back of the restaurant where all the wait staff congregate. We thought maybe they were saving the more comfortable booths for larger parties...but, no. Parties of two came in after us and were seated there with no problem. The Queso was lukewarm and, frankly, tasted like it came out of a jar. Chips and salsas were good. The relleno was just OK. The goat cheese filling was barely warm, and there was WAY too much of it. It was smothered with a lot of ingredients, which just overwhelmed the entire dish. The margarita was too sweet. Tacos were fine. Service was basically good, but it was awkward listening to the constant conversation between the wait staff who hovered near our table for most of our meal.

We went with friends last night. It was the best Tex/Mex I have ever had and I lived in San Antonio for a brief time. The chips are warm, the salsas are fresh and the stacked beef brisket enchilada was amazing. This is the location of the old Espaza's which was an iconic restaurant but the new owners, Matt & Kristine, have really taken this place to a new level. Warning...the spicy ketchup is really spicy. Have a water or beer handy.

No repeat.

This place is amazing! Everything is made fresh to order. We had chips and salsa to start followed with adovada tacos and a pork burrito. I wanted to lick the plate! Must try at least once in your life!

So good! The chili relleno was so delicious!! Spicy and flavorful. The chorizo queso was so good, the guacamole was fresh and yummy - the arugula avocado salad was very fresh and delicious with just the right amount of spice - the house margarita was excellent too! Definitely will be going back!!!

Service was great! Atmosphere nice. Food a disappointment. Salsas were bland. Guacamole was bland. Enchiladas topped with egg. Good addition having the egg but overall very bland and over use of smoke flavoring. Tacos had little texture and no bold flavors. Caesar salad was good. Probably won't return.

This is just terrific food. The smoked pork shoulder, the brisket, New Mexico chiles, all amazing. I highly recommend the stacked enchiladas...they even remembered the fried egg. Bravo. Service is friendly too.

Enjoy...

One of my new favorites. The portions are huge. The flavors are unique and the space is cool. Great before a show at the Laurelhurst theater

  • Smar T.

  • Jennifer F.

  • Erin M.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
