Got a free gift certificate here and wasn't too impressed-- the place was dead on a Friday and they reluctantly sat us right next to the only other couple in the restaurant. Baby Gem salad was super soggy, truffle Mac was dope, and a medium rare steak came out pretty rare but they grilled it for a few more and it was tasty. Wasn't a huge fan of the pork tenderloin-- tasted like canned bbq sauce underneath it. Bar next door looks a little more lovely, maybe there next time!

This place would be a solid "5" in many cities, but in the well-above-average culinary market of Portland is gets 4, which is still damn good. Over all I very much enjoyed and plan to return. For some perspective, it had been a busy day, we were hungry, traffic was bad, and I walked in late and in a less than welcoming mood. But even though walking in with a low tolerance for anything further, the staff and kitchen quickly turned my day around. The cocktails were excellent, the appetizers (steak tartare and yellowfin crudo) were excellent and distinctive, and the entrees were similarly impressive. It is priced on the high end, but I still consider it value. You get what you pay for. There are a number of options within a block or two of the Schnitz and Center for Performing Arts, and this place is now at the top of my area/zone list.

I have never given a 1 star but this is a funny and true story: we arrived early for our reservation at 6:30, we were seated in a great table, the waiter was very nice and we ordered a nice and expensive bottle of wine Caymus 40th anniversary. After 10 minutes the waiter come back with the wine list on his hand and a sorry face politely telling us that the wine was out of stock, no big deal, we ordered another bottle even more expensive. 10 minutes later he's back with an increasingly nervous look on his face, with a drop of sweat falling from his forehead he reluctantly told us that even that wine was not available. My frustration begin to show, while I start looking back at the wine list, finally decided to order another expensive cab and I tell the waiter to make sure that the vintage was the one mentioned in the wine list. Another 10 minutes pass and the waiter come back with an happy face, he tell me that its the correct vintage, but when he shows the bottle I noticed it was not right. Unhappy I show him the vintage and shocked by the news he said that the manager gave him the bottle. Aware of the chance of this happening I had already chosen a replacement wine so he run back to get it. 10 more minutes passed and the young man he's back with a very happy smile, telling me the bottle I previously requested was available after all in the right vintage. Last bottle available of a $180 Nickel and Nickel Rock Cairn 2010. We are so happy until the unthinkable happen. The cork broke, and this is the only mistake that the waiter did, he used a bad bottle opener to do the job and he pulled too hard (I know this stuff cause I worked in restaurants for 20 years and I'm a wine importer now). The manager come happy to our table telling us he was glad we finally have the right bottle until he gets shocked to see the broken cork. He take the bottle and tell us he will get it right for us. We decided to order some food in the mean time, cause its been one hour we are sitting and we haven't got anything but water, and here come the final blow, my wife crave for foie grass could not be satisfied, out of stock as well. At that moment I look at my wife and tell her that maybe we should leave she look back and me and agree, so I get up and tell the waiter that we are very sorry but we wont stay for dinner. While I do that I can see the manager busy with the bartender trying to get the cork out of that bottle. As a conclusion I must say that the manager did not take care of the situation in the right way, after over 1 hour we are sitting at the place he should have at least offered a drink or some food to cover up for the poor experience we were having. At the end we went for dinner at Place Paley and we loved it, foie grass was excellent there and wines were rightly priced.

I am always somewhat suspicious of hotel restaurants but Swank was really quite good. I even ate sweetbreads (Ris de Veau...something I would not normally consider ordering but it was served with an abelskiver and i couldn't resist). I loved it. The calamari was nice and spicy, the lamb dish had a great combination of sweet and savory and the lobster gnocchi was rich, but subtle. The wine steward and I bonded over SLO County wines and he found a great Napa cab for us to enjoy. I told my husband that there are so many good restaurants in Portland, I didn't want any repeats until we had tried more. But that was before coming here...

I came here for lunch with a friend We had a 12:15 reservation and the place was totally packed. By about 1:00 the place was empty. The lunch menu here is a little on the spendier side but about right for a downtown place called "Swank". Lots of sandwich options and pasta options, salads, etc. First off I have to say that the service was fantastic - there was a little weirdness at the beginning because I think we were assigned two servers, but they figured it out and then our server was really great. I ordered the mussels with squid ink pasta and my friend ordered the risotto. My pasta was really delicious but the mussels were, well, I decided not to eat most of them because they tasted kind of off. They didn't taste obviously bad so I didn't want to send them back and waste such delicious pasta, but I was a little disappointed because I LOVE mussels. I assumed they'd come with toasted bread but they did not - I'd recommend that as a great addition to the dish. The risotto was REALLY rich and quite delicious. I had a few bites of my friends and almost had food envy :) I'd love to come back to the "swine" side of the house for happy hour and a more casual dining experience. Overall, a solid lunch location, but maybe avoid the seafood or ask when it gets shipped in.

I had breakfast at Swank several times, as I was staying at the Paramount hotel during a business trip. Service was prompt and friendly every day. You will get a complimentary, kind of rustic doughnut. It's very rich, of course, but tasty. The goat cheese omelette is really good; the potatoes (I believe they are fried in duck fat) are delicious. Portions are generous. Coffee and juice are fresh. You can really enjoy a quiet and satisfying breakfast while you read your paper. Perfect.

We came to SWINE for cocktails and stayed for dinner at SWANK. A "Swanky" atmosphere, with very efficient and professional service. The main dishes were pretty spectacular, and even with a few minor flaws, it was a our best fine dining experience in Portland. APPS: * Roasted Pork Belly with cheddar grits, poached egg & pickled radish - nicely done with great balance of flavors, colors & textures. * Yellow Tail Crudo - good, but the the vinaigrette was heavily applied and was not our favorite. MAINS: * Confit of Halibut with green beans & wild rice- perfectly cooked being both tender and flaky. Honestly, THE best I've ever had... and epic plate. (NOTE: calling it confit is a misnomer, as it's olive oil poached and worth every penny!) * Pork Tenderloin with bean cassoulet, house sausage & mushrooms - Not really a cassoulet, but maybe a modern interpretation. Yet, it was cooked perfectly with great flavor and texture, especially the fava-like beans. * Swank Burger with truffle aioli, cave aged gruyere, bacon, arugula, pretzel bun - cooked to spot-on medium rare with a good house grind. It was tasty, but a bit rich for us. The fries were excellent. * Seared Sea Scallops with roasted cauliflower & salsa verde - good flavors, but a served a bit cool for our preference. SIDES: Truffle Mac & Cheese - well cooked and good cheese flavor, but too oily at the bottom of the bowl. Fingerling Potatoes - this was the only real disappointment, as the potatoes were undercooked and the sauce was broken. Crisp Fried Brussels Sprouts with blue cheese, pepper bacon, hazelnuts - great flavors and balance. We ate every bite. PS - yes it is somewhat annoying that the restrooms can only be accessed by the lobby elevator, but that did not diminish our dining experience.

The food here really is good! Which is most important. However, I gave it an A-OK rating just for a couple of things that bothered me, but might not be a biggie for others: A) The ambiance is a little off because of the separation of the Swine Bar from the restaurant. B) It did feel way too much of an 'afterthought' as part of the hotel then a restaurant all on it's own. PLUS....the bathroom is only accessed by taking the hotel lobby's elevator down to the hotel's lower level housekeeping floor C) The vibe n the restaurant just wasn't inviting or ambient --there wasn't a lot of activity, and no music. Not really romantic, or a great place for a big group dinner. This however, is a great restaurant if you are traveling out of town for business and want a good meal solo, or a quiet place to have a client meeting where you can actually have a conversation and hear each other.

Went for dinner a few days ago during restaurant month. Well worth it. Made a reservation at swine and get there to find out swine is the bar and swank is the restaurant. The open table reservation through Yelp said swine I show it to the girl at swine and she looks at us like we are crazy and making it up. Told swank is where we need to go, same place two sides. Anyways, the steelhead with veg was very good, wines by the glass above average and the salad was light and fresh. The dressing needs a little more flavor but everything else was very good so pick your battles. Nice vibe, fireplace, clean and good service.

This place was a great find for breakfast. First there was no wait to be seated. All of the wait staff were wonderful, friendly and attentive. I had the duck hash with fried duck egg - absolutely divine! We also had the bottomless mimosa. They did not skimp, and we definitely felt that we got great value for the money.

Great experience here tonight, I don't know why Portland Monthly was so equivocal. We started out with housemade ciabatta with salted butter, then had an assortment of artfully arranged crudo (yellowtail, scallop, octopus) and a delicious salad of lettuce, labneh, red onion, peaches and cherries. Then, we enjoyed the salmon of the day, which was served with coconut rice and Dungeness crab salad, and the bavette steak. Everything was fresh and accented with seasonal fruit and veggies. We also loved the complimentary saffron chocolate truffle at the end of the meal. Although we liked Tasting East, the space's previous incarnation, we greatly enjoyed Swank and will be back.

Great atmosphere. Great location. Bartender was knowledgable and cordial. Good wine selection. We were the only ones in the place so we were a little hesitant but pleasantly surprised by the food. We had he halibut and the presentation and taste was superb. Will come back.

My wife and I attended a soft launch dinner with two of our dear friends. I've been to a handful of these launches, and I have to say that this one, by a large margin, was far, far better than all of the rest combined. When we arrived, we met our friends next door at Swine, billed as a whiskey and moonshine bar. Decor was suitably themed with a tip of the hat to a southern country and western look with some fun Restoration Hardware fixtures and somewhat modern/rustic design. It looks like they are going to provide a Bottle Service as there was a wall of half finished locker rack shelves. The drinks were great and the staff was even willing to mix up a couple of our own recipes. After a drink at Swine, we moved over to Swank where we were promptly seated (we had a reservation) and ordered another round of drinks. We proceeded to spend a good 10 minutes with our waiter talking about the menu, and the Chef's off-menu selection. We chose 2 plates from each of 4 courses. As our courses arrived, we marveled at the presentation and then were immediately wowed by every single bite. Perfectly prepared, beautifully presented, and wonderfully delicious. Over the next few hours, we shared some amazing dishes. Every one was amazing, the standouts being the sweet and spicy calamari, the sunflower seed risotto, the planked salmon, and the grilled greens. The beef bavette was absolutely stunning and so well prepared, that we had a very difficult time believing it was bavette and not filet mignon. The wine list is impressive as well. We asked the manager about the corkage fee for your own bottles and he indicated it would be $20. The wonderfully diverse staff was cheerful and excited, and operated very well together. As long as they don't lose that, they will do well. If they can keep things up, this place is going to be extremely popular. We certainly had one of the best evenings out we've ever had in Portland. Our Heartiest Compliments to the Chef, the Manager and the staff at Swank! Bravo. From the pre-launch web site at portlandparamount.com/di ...: "Swank, will be a lively regional bistro where local flair and classic preparation will meet. Featuring a menu built around local, fresh products and crowd pleasing dishes, Swank will offer breakfast, lunch and dinner 7 days a week. Room service is available for breakfast."

A good spot to have cheap bottomless mimosa if you don't mind having cheap champagne & the long wait.

Beware, this place is ridiculously overpriced. Went here with my girlfriend one evening when Ringside was booked. The ambiance was nice when we arrived, however our server was totally MIA. When we did get service, we ordered wine and salads. The salads came on large flat circular plates which barely fit on the table. I understand they were trying to be artistic but it was very unpractical. We ordered entrees and when they arrived, we were shocked at how tiny they were. In the end, the bill was about $120, which we reluctantly paid. A few hours later we picked up takeout from another restaurant since we were so hungry. Not worth the money.

What a wonderful addition for the downtown restaurant scene! I decided to go in Tuesday night and ended up there again on Thursday night. The salads were so fresh and the dressings were perfect. Their version of tomato salad was excellent and I loved the lightly battered and fried fresh mozzarella. The watermelon and nectarine salad had beautifully melded flavors and the steak was cooked rare to medium rare and the sauces I could not get enough of. This will be my new hang out.

After a terrible experience and another brunch spot we happened to walk past swank, didn't think anything of it and kept walking but as we past the doorman he says to us,"what are you two out doin?" We reply lookin for a place to have some brunch and beverages. He of course says well stop walking that way it's right through these doors. Off sheer enthusiasm we of course did and we were pleasantly surprised. Bottomless mimosas and great duck confit potatoes!! Also some of the best eggs Benedict I've had. To cap all this of they had two phenomenal waitresses there that made the whole brunch worth it. We will be back and tell everyone we know. Excellent service fantastic food and and all in all great dining experience!

The wife and I had dinner here tonight because the food was recommended and it was her birthday... out of the gate the first thing we noticed were the two chefs standing outside the door smoking cigarettes for everyone too smell, as non smokers your policy needs to be, make your employees go across the street to smoke to smoke, it absolutely stinks, so not a good first impression, upon being seating our waitress obviously was having a bad day or couldn't wait too leave, the customer service just wasent there, overall the food was perfect, in which no doubt was made by the cigarette wielding chefs whom we hoped washed up before hand, as a result probably won't be back.... The experience just wasent there for the price you pay..

On 9/28/14. What a wonderful and memorable meal. Fortunate enough to entertain my brother in the wine cellar with an amazing Ono and avocado appetizer, the best tomato and mozzarella salad ever and followed by wonderful entrees. I chose the pheasant and my spouse and brother chose the beef entree. All were prepared with the perfect blending of sweet and savory. An awesome chef's inspiration. We finished with a hazelnut chocolate tort. With the perfect wine it was one of the best meals any of the three of us can remember. Please keep Swine viable. You won't regret it! Lorie K PDX

We stopped in on a whim on our way back from the art museum and so glad we did. Our cocktails were in a word perfect. First course Hamachi plate with Octopus. Holy tentacles Batman. We haven't seen suckers like this since RiffleNW. A++. I had the lobster gnocchi and hubby tried the tuna. Again gold stars all around. Entrees were beautifully plated, tasty, and full portions aka I wasn't left hungry but didn't need a doggy bag. The whole menu looked amazing and if it wasn't on the pricier end I would've ordered it all. Service was slow start but once we got our drinks things went smoother. We will be back if anything just for the tentacles and drinks.

This is my second time to Swank and I have finally made a decision about the review - good quality food and preparation, but the overall food direction seems a little murky. I am not sure if they are trying to be farm to table with freshness and local producers first (duck from Vermont, King Salmon from Alaska that they say is line caught, but the season has yet to come so definitely from a year ago or farmed - I stayed away), or are they trying to be more classic in there presentation. Still up for debate. Overall, the staff have always been very polite and helpful. When questions asked of the menu, answers are given or found out. I do feel picky about asking where there food is sourced, but the waiter did tell us that they were proud to try to be as local as possible. Love the space and ease of parking in the cinema garage across the street. The space is modern with a wonderful view of the courtyard at Director park - lively scene at night. Now to the food - we had six of us so I will touch on some the selections. The Foie Gras served whole and grilled was fantastic as always. The oysters from Netarts were perfectly cleaned and served with a wonderful and not overpowering mignonette which let the sweetness of the oysters shine - one of the best mignonette I have had in Portland. The beet salad with Troutdale produced beets was nice, clean and fresh with a perfect test of earthiness. Entrees - duck superb, but could have had the fat a little more rendered - just picky that way. Scallops - simple, fresh and cooked perfectly. Rib eye steak, painted hills, was a little on the thin side for me, and slightly med rare to medium, and definitely had rested too long because it was Luke warm when it got to me - also it came with fiddleheads which could be left off this plate. Overall, it is a place I would recommend, they just really need to define their cuisine and go for it. Food: 34/40 Atmosphere/ambience/decor: 17/20 - primarily because the bathroom is a journey to get too. Service/staff: 19/20 - like the manager making the rounds and checkin in Value: 17/20 Total: 87/100

Wonderful ambience and conveniently downtown location. We went for the $29 Portland dining out promo which included a choice of salad/soup, an entree, and dessert. My friend had the wild green salad, half chicken, and a combination of blood orange & coconut sorbet. All were very delicious and tasty. Not much appeal to me as far as the entrées included on the promotion. I opted for the grilled foie (appetizer) & Apple bread and a side of root vegetable gratin. Both were deliciously rich - maybe too much. Swank does a wonderful job. Their service is exceptional!!! Loved out server who was able to describe the dishes in detail! Nothing really blew me away but it was still VERY good - I would encourage others to dine here as well!

Restaurants that service hotels frequently get a bad rap. Swank proves the exception. The manager, Scott, personally came to our table and welcomed us to the restaurant. The menu has enough variety to develop a favorite and the staff is very friendly. Their sister bar swine has really nice small plates and equally friendly service. We will definitely be back,

Old faces, new doctors. New lifts procedures to liven up and be ready for the world. Oh wait, this is not a review for a cosmetic surgery clinic. But it's close. The space has been home to at least 3 other businesses. While most of them are great and have tasty things to offer, they did not last long. I'm hoping this one would. We came here as it opened almost a year ago. I believe it was at the soft opening through a friend. I'm quite impressed by the selection and spread that they have. Well, we ordered a lot and sampled almost everything. It was great. The service and quality of food was impeccable. I somewhat frowned when the head chef announce that he was leaving a few months after the store opened. But, that was some months ago. This place still looks like it is still booming. I recalled them having a dark decor like they have never repainted from the previous establishment. Changed the light fixtures and call it a day. I did not mind it as it is dark and roomy. My kind of design. Sometimes I like to be Swanky. Maybe I should try to get down and dirty and try Swine sometime.

When I initially looked around it a small intimate place to collect my thoughts but have a well methodically organized meal I came across many restaurants. Yes swank was part of that list. When I asked locals while on my excursion through the portland museum of art they all narrowed down the choices . By flipping a coin my luck landed me at swank. When I walked towards it it seemed dark and gloomy , so to me that was perfection. I was greeted by a lovely hosted who asked if it was just me today. Most places look at me weird but am I really the only one who loves a meal alone. Lol . I guess I must be. The ambiance was perfect. Small and intimate but with large windows and a view of the busy street nightlife of portland. I was brought water almost instantly. I took a look at the menu and narrowed down my choices. I started with the cocktail. A restaurant needs to have a strong cocktail. And swank did not disappoint. I had the sparrow. It was yummy, granted anything with whiskey wins me over. The sparrow had an orange peel as a garnish and was light plum in color. This truly was a beautiful drink . Not only did the deep times of the Wiskey hit the pallet but my nose was on a constant high when drinking. Although the the taste and the smell are very different they seem to compliment each other. I was in love . For starters I asked for the sea salt and pepper calamari. It was exquisite. I'm very picky with my calamari but the blend of spice and citrus paired with the fresh octopus left me wanting more. It was a tad salty but to each their own. It was topped off with sea salt and a spring carrot and spinach finely diced into a sauce. For my main meal I went with the seared duck. It was my first time trying something new and different . My waiter made sure that I try something that the house calls a signature dish. When it arrives the proportion was nice and perfect for a first time duck critic. Lol. There was a well ban aced of cheese on the plate to go with my dick as well as tossed baby cabbages and what seemed like grits. The proportions where small but extremely flavorful and fulfilling. For desert I decided to try the olive oil cake. I wasn't sure if this was going to be good or not as I also have never had that. When I asked the host about it she seemed to not have an answer for me. I took a risk and went for it. To my surprise the cake was actually four portions of mickle sized croutons. Slightly disappointed but over all the ap and the main made up for it . Will I return next time I'm in Portland? Most likely. Be ready to open you wallets for the meal though. But it's worth every penny!

We went to this place for my girlfriend's birthday, with a group of about 10. The experience started off well, with a call that morning offering to customize the menus to read "Happy Birthday" and allowing me to preorder a dessert for the Birthday Girl. I was very impressed with the service I received before I arrived. The service once we arrived was a very different story. Our server seemed nice enough at the beginning, but from the point we ordered appetizers for the table, things started to slow to a crawl. Our meal didn't arrive for about an hour, which was frustrating because the place was dead. What made it worse, was that we were seated so we could see into the Kitchen, and nearly everyone commented on the amount of people standing in the kitchen doing nothing... while we sat hungry and waiting. If slow wasn't bad enough, I got to watch the Chef - in the white smock (not just a cook) constantly shove food into his face while he was cooking our meals and never once wash his hands. That's unsanitary and unprofessional, and I would have walked out had it not been a birthday. When the food finally arrived, my meal was cold and undercooked. The table ordered everything from Steak, to burgers, and a few orders of fish, and sadly no one enjoyed their meal. We then had another long wait for the check, where I was less than thrilled to see "Gratuity Included" to the tune of 20%. (I know this is customary with large groups) I understand that some restaurants are more expensive than others, and price is not the reason that I won't be returning. That being said, this place is expensive, and paying that much for bad food (cooked by a guy with no regard for sanitation) served at a snails pace by an inattentive server who gets a guaranteed 20%.... Never Again.

We had guests in from the Bay Area and wanted to have a nice dinner so we went to the Swank side. What a dinner! The attention to detail from the server to the attention given from the chef was immaculate! We had several items off the menu, the Ris De Veau was out of this world, our guests thoroughly enjoyed it, even if they aren't fans of offal. Every dish that we had was perfect. I can't wait to go back! We have also had happy hour at the Swine side a few weeks ago. Again, it was just a great time. It was the opening night, so of course, there will be a hiccup or two, nothing unforgivable. The Sous Vide hot wings are epic! Good imagination on the drinks, as well.

This place is amazing. My wife and I heard that it was opening so decided to give it a try. We were very impressed by the atmosphere, and the food did not let us down. I'm a huge fan of the calamari and the cocktails were perfect! Will definitely be coming back again.

Swank opened recently so we had to try it. The food was really inventive and very, very tasty. The service was a little off due to a server who was just too chatty. The atmosphere was quite nice, and it wasn't too noisy to talk. All in all a great experience and we will be back. If you go, be sure to step across the lobby and try Swine, which is the casual dining/bar version of Swank.

I am back! Elyse at the door is more or less perfection for the front of the house. We came in to look over the menu and she was so lovely we grabbed a seat without even needing to look at the choices. She had our first course order in almost before we sat down. Our server Ben continues the theme of excellence. Asparagus salad, ahi tuna and scallops, yum!

This is a perfect location, right across from Director's Park and the Fox Tower. Swank is the restaurant while Swine entertains a whiskey bar. We came here on a Groupon on a hot summer night, and the meal was amazingly seasonally, locally appropriate fyor the 100 degree temps. First, the decor is modern, dark wood, with chandeliers. The margarita I had was refreshingly salted on the rocks and strong. The highlight of the meal for me was the heirloom tomato and nectarine salad garnished with basil at $12, it was served on a long rectangular white plate easily split between 2-3 people. With the heat, I was not exceptionally hungry so I ordered a couple of sides. Again, a meal in itself - flash fried brussel sprouts Oregonian style with blue cheese and hazlenuts and HOLLA - bacon! I also ordered the truffle mac and cheese - the truffle poignancy was definitely a hit! To top it off, we had the chefs dessert -a shortbread tart served cool with black berries and pear and creme freche! We will be back! What a great place to make a date whether you hit the bar or the restaurant and perhaps a movie at Fox Tower or people watch in Director's Park.

Literally the best burger I've ever had in my life. I hesitate to say that, because nothing is worse than getting your hopes up about something, then having it not live up to what you were imagining. But honestly, the Swank burger was that good! You can get a lot of good burgers in Portland, but the Swank burger is on another level. The burger alone would be 5 stars, but the service was slow and the prices are quite spendy. Still though, a very solid 4, and I'll be back again for that burger!

Wow! We may have found one of the best restaurants in Portland! People need to pay attention to this one! Room is very attractive with nice design. Tonite the chef Jeremiah was cooking and if he remains here, this could be in the top ten quality restaurants of Portland! Dinner began with a beautifully played asparagus salad with Parmesan crisps on the side and a wonderful re pepper dressing. It tasted as beautifully as it was presented. My husband was the tester of the hamburger! Nope not an ordinary burger! Quality beef and cooked medium rare and slice of bacon and a truffle sauce. Fabulous!!! Then there was mine! Chinook salmon on a bed of drunken rice, ribbons of summer squash , zucchini and large blackberries! It too was like an artist's palate with halved red pear tomatoes. Truly an incredible dinner. I know hotel restaurants get a bum rap sometimes...not this time! I highly recommend Swank when Jeremiah is cooking!

Upon arriving to our hotel and spying the "Where to EAT Guide", we giggled over the name "Swank'n'Swine" and sang it in a jingley way. ...laughter turned to drooling upon navigating the menu. CAB PLEASE! Hotel dining has been making a comeback in the US, and Swank is certainly part of this trend. High ceilings, rustic wood and stone decor, stone/crystal/iron light fixtures with vintage-looking bulbs. Certainly very "Swank"y. On the Friday early evening, there were three other tables (plenty of space!). For round 1 my friends ordered the calamari! These East coast gals are selective when it comes to squid, (will West coast 'mari be spicy? will there be peppers? will they stack up to RI-style?). Fortunately this platter of fried tentacles satisfied their salacity for sea creature. The pieces were thinner than in in the East, and were slightly sweet (huh?), but still a good selection. For my main I asked if there could be any substitutions for their meats; I'm a vegetarian, and there was only one menu option that I could go with. Their cod, mushroom risotto, squash and flavored butter sounded incredible (...so long as the cod could just be left on the side). Well.......the risotto is cooked in chicken stock, and that's all that came (no squash, no sprouts, no delicious butter......just risotto, not what I ordered). What *was* on my plate was delicious.....but blamed myself for not having planned ahead better (there was a beet salad they they may, or may not, have been out of....but that was the only true Veg option and I had to looks elsewhere for sustenance). Friends devoured plates of pork cheeks (with bone marrow braised leeks $27) and maple duck (brussel sprouts and polenta $26). The plating was BEAUTIFUL - the platters were massive and the meat morsels were arranged into beautiful compositions. Drinks - - - YUM! I had two of the Dirty "1" Thirty (barrel aged belvedere, lemon juice, green teat, star anise syrup, yellow chartreuse, prosecco and "large rock" $12). .......I had 2 and was feelin' pretty good about life by the end of the night (even with a $136 bill). All in all - - - GREAT COCKTAILS and scrumptious food for carnivores and flexitarians, not a great veghead spot.

Delicious! We ordered the hamachi crudo and calamari, both were amazing! Calamari were probably the best I've had. For the main dish, I had the lobster gnocchi which was also one of the best I've had. Our server Joseph was also super nice and accommodating with our separate bills. Must try!

Wonderful place in downtown Portland! Attached to the Paramount Hotel and a really cool bar called Swine. Highly recommend both the restaurant and the bar! Our food was amazing! I had the lamb and my boyfriend had the pork tenderloin. Presentation, taste, atmosphere and service were all excellent. Will definitely go back and will for sure take out of town guest.

A hit and miss experience, with a pretentious menu and a cloying wait staff. Some of the food was excellent, some was average. The server, while pleasant at first, was far too chatty and spent way too much time at the table, as if she were a guest at my dinner party, which she was most definitely not... The amuse bouche were wasted all around after a tiny taste of what seemed to be a 'lard pudding' passed off as fois gras, oysters and squid appetizers were excellent, most of us enjoyed our main courses - my pheasant was excellent, although everything else on the plate was cold. The homemade marshmallows offered as dessert were also wasted as none of us could eat them. Not planning to return.

We had dinner with friends at Swank the other night. It was our first time there and it was a wonderful experience! What a great location to be inside the Paramount Hotel in the heart of Downtown Portland. The space was comfortable, yet elegant. A nice blend of stone and reclaimed wood. Our waiter, Lee, was fantastic! He was extremely personable and made the experience very enjoyable. We started with Oysters on the Half Shell and the Salt & Pepper Calamari, which were both delicious. We had memorable main courses of Fresh Salmon, Peppercorn Crust Duck, and Summer Lamb Loin. All the dishes were beautifully presented and prepared perfectly. Absolutely delicious! For dessert we had the unique Rose Petal Dessert and the Deconstructed Chocolate Cake paired with yummy coffee drinks, which was a lovely finish to a perfect evening. We will definitely be back! Thanks, Swank for a great night!

We went out here for Portland Dining Month, with high expectations. Service was very slow, which I guess we could chalk up to them being super busy. We arrived prior to our reservation, and the hostess suggested it might be quicker for us to order at the bar. We decided to wait at the bar, but asked to keep our reservation. We initially thought about ordering dinner at the bar period, but the one bartender on duty was too busy to take our order. (I don't mean that in a catty or sarcastic way, the guy was literally jumping around trying to make a bazillion drinks. He tried to talk to us/get us menus, but he honestly couldn't help us because he was so busy). I take more issue with the servers/staff milling around, wandering through, walking by and simply doing nothing to help either us or (more importantly) the poor embattled bartender. I mean, I'm pretty sure someone could have jumped in and helped pour a soda or two at least. That being said, the guy did make some darn good drinks! The hubs and I were told we couldn't order/start eating at the bar or order appetizers before if we were waiting to be seated, and as a result we were both pretty hangry by the time we finally got seated. Which, I think, made it even more disappointing that I found Swank's food so... Meh. The crab and nettle soup was very good. The beet salad was typical. The burger was not worth the price (salty, soggy, and the meat was a bit overdone). The pretzel bread was a good idea, but way too thick and dense. Dessert was about what you'd expect, but not something I'd come here to eat again. On the plus side, the free bread and butter were excellent (European style butter with salt sprinkled on top). Overall, they clearly use good ingredients. The execution is about average for a PDX restaurant, but probably fantastic if you compare it to food anywhere else in the U.S. If service was a little better, I'd give them a better review.

Waited an hour and a half after reservation and still had not been served. We were comped a glass of wine. We should have just followed our inclination and gone elsewhere. It was not a good experience. Menu was overly ambitious and fussy. Service was adequate. Why would you go here when there are so many greeat restaurants in Portland to choose from? You wouldn't.

My wife and I went here on our date night and had a wonderful time. The atmosphere was nice and the food was great. The tomato salad is a worthy choice but the foie gras is amazing.

I went for breakfast and it was a disappointment. I ordered coffee and the chicken & waffle. A complimentary old fashion cake doughnut was brought to the table. It was hot and beautifully colored. Nice even crisping on the outside. Wonderful texture on the inside. Not at all greasy. BUT... there was a lemon curd drizzled over the whole thing and a cinnamon sugar drizzle as well. Totally ruined an absolutely wonderful, SIMPLE, doughnut that would have been perfect for dunking in coffee. The 2 drizzles made the whole thing far too sweet and messy. You know, simple is good. Not everything needs to be dressed or hidden. The chicken & waffle. Well. Where to start? Bottom or top? Bottom. Beautiful waffle on the bottom. Great color, great texture, crisp outside, fluffy inside, not tough, nice size. Fried chicken (2 pieces on the waffle) and the fried chicken was just disgusting. Horribly, horribly greasy. 1/2 of the skin was missing so it was just fried, greasy chicken flesh. And... to make matters worse there was, no joke, about 1/2 CUP of some whipped honey stuff on the chicken that had melted onto the chicken and the waffle making the chicken and waffle too sweet and my waffle a soggy mess. Jesus! Really?! 1/2 a CUP of that sweet stuff? What the Hell? It's a condiment NOT a side. Moderation people. Moderation! Oh man, my plate was a sweet greasy mess and that is NOT a compliment. I brought home 1/2 the waffle, 1/2 the doughnut and a piece of chicken. By the time I got home I was feeling nauseous from sweet grease. I opened the to-go box - there was literally a puddle of grease from the chicken. I gave the whole meal to the crows.. and watched them bury it in the leaves! HAHAHAAA!!! Too funny. Somebody told me "they're working the kinks out" Pfft! These guys aren't new to the restaurant industry. The atmosphere in Swank... not great really. I felt like I was in a hotel restaurant. The restaurant was pretty empty for breakfast at 7:30/8am. Never saw a Manager. My server was nice. The doorman at the hotel was nice.

Have had dinner and lunch here and each time my friends and I were all very impressed with everything that came out of the kitchen. The space is beautiful and service is great. The food is creative, portions are perfect and the presentation was fabulous. The lunch gnocchi was possibly my favorite in Portland (Gorgonzola, zucchini, some chili oil spice and definitely some garlic), and the sweetbreads were wonderful as was the burger (up there with Yakuza). I'm still thinking about the duck confit salad and rose pedal cake dessert...I'm looking forward to returning soon to try more of the menu. Such a great new addition to the Portland food scene!

In Portland briefly, couldn't get into the "must go" places, and ended up here, partly because I know a chef here, from SF. I know it's new, and it was Sunday night, early, but should have been busier. Started with oysters, so good we ordered another round. A touch of seasoning, subtle and perfect. Fois gras was a must, coming from the deprived state where it's now not legal. Coffee cured, with red eye gravy and peaches, a generous portion in thin slices, unctuous, delicious. Shared the crisp, perfectly cooked sweetbreads next. Another twist on breakfast, served with bacon, maple syrup and an egg filled ebelskiver. Yum! Segued to a light, refreshing salad with a generous amount of good greens, pickled white strawberries, cherries, goat cheese, then shared an entree of sous vide then bacon-wrapped pork tenderloin, crisp outside, pink and juicy inside, with a well balanced white bean salad, crisped cauliflower, and apricot chutney. Wine list pretty pricy, but the bottle of Anderson valley Pinot matched well with the food. We didn't order dessert, but our friend brought a plate with the dessert of the day, and they definitely have a good pastry chef. With the meal starting with a little amuse, and ending with a little gift of house made jellies and caramel, we were impressed. Not overly costly for the quality, everything scrupulously fresh with a strong local emphasis and a deft hand with seasoning, a worthy meal in pleasant surroundings, with friendly, attentive service.

My husband and I stopped by this new restaurant after a movie across the street. We enjoy trying new places in Portland, so decided to give this one a try. The service was excellent; waiter was well informed and attentive, but not overly so. Our waiter brought wonderful, house made bread to the table (three different kinds, each one very good). We shared the mushrooms with sunflower seed "risotto" as an appetizer and it was really delicious. We also tried the pear salad, which was tasty. For dinner, my husband had the wide noodle pasta with pork ragu; it was different and delicious. I had the gnocchi, which was amazing -- so flavorful, kind of spicy and very memorable. We decided to forego dessert, so the waiter brought us four pieces of house made candy, each of which we shared and enjoyed (especially the salted caramel and the chocolate). Everything that we tried was beautifully presented. We definitely plan a return trip to Swank. We had one of the best meals there we've ever had in Portland. Prices are reasonable for the quality. And the service matches the excellence of the cuisine.

Probably one of the best dinner's we have had lately...rank it up with my dining experience in Honolulu at Nobu where I normally I am not a fish kind of gal..we shared the best Calamari, fresh, light, crisp, nice flavor and heat...perfect combo and understand that is what the Chef is known for...for main course I had the Summer Lamb Loin, and although I wanted to go for the Steak it was great, my husband had the fish, a great Salmon that was perfectly MR...and of course the amuse-bouche...Salmon, with lemon preserve with leak ash...and new Olive Oil...such a nice touch....great meal and we will be back! If Portland was an hour away we would be here every Saturday! Just saying...oh, and the wine and cocktails...really yummy!

Very nice dinner, spur of moment and they were able to take the 3 of us (with the 5 yr old). Food flavors were uniformly outstanding, portions moderate. We ordered 3 courses each, the calamari, crudo plate, Lyonnaise salad, agnoletti, duck and salmon. Both of us were stuffed after 2nd course and brought 3rd courses home. Kid had butter noodles which she loved. Nice service, nice wine list, reasonably priced. Inventive food and flavors. We'll definitely be back!

Great atmosphere, delicious food, wonderful staff. The lamb tartare, ris de veau, peppercorn crusted duck and lobster gnocchi were all amazing! Layne was our waiter and made our evening spectacular.

For a girls night, 4 of us girls decided to go to Swine for a few cocktails and then over to Swank for dinner. We inquired about a seat and was informed of a beautiful private wine cellar room and booked it. Once we arrived it was so gorgeous at both places we already felt like queens. Once we went into the wine cellar at Swank for dinner they greeted us with delicious tasters of something the chef was working on and the most soft yummy bread...we all were amazed at how amazing the tartare was! YUM! Then we ordered several oysters that were by far the best I have ever had. The oysters had a champagne mignonette and a touch of spice, really good! The tomato salad was incredible and fresh from the saturday market! Delic! For dinner the Lobster Gnocchi, The Pork, and the tuna was all shared by us four ladies. We couldn't get enough. The dessert was just as amazing and even though we were so stuffed we ate it all! After several glasses of wine we didn't want to leave because we were having the best time. The service was just incredible! Ben our server and Greg the GM took care of us and made sure we were happy all night. It was a very VIP experience and we will definitely be going back again. I would highly recommend the bar before dinner, the appetizers at Swine was also to die for. The ambiance of repurposed would combined with gorgeous upscale modern fixtures made our experience there more amazing! Can't wait to go back and try brunch! Thank you Swank and Swine for such an incredible experience!

I went to Swank for Portland's Dining month last night. The restaurant sits at the base of the Paramount hotel and is split in two by the hotel's lobby; Swank which is the more upscale dining side and where I experienced my dreamy divulgence, and Swine the whiskey and moonshine bar. The decor of both sides is rustic, industrial and warm. Dark wood floors, large metal ring encased chandeliers and earthy tone details. Their cocktails are unique and expertly qwerky. The food was absolutely fantastic; I started with the beef bone marrow, which even included a little escargot; has been on my bucket list and I can say i'd have it again. Then I had the beet salad with smoked goat cheese; total sweet, smokey vinegary heaven. For the main course I went with the seared duck breast with creamy polenta and roasted Brussel sprouts; rich, succulent and to die for. Dessert was a butterscotch custard with whipped cream and a salted sugar cookie. Holy crap. My taste buds are still in shock. The restaurant manager came by at least 5 times to make sure everything was satisfactory. Customer service all around was 5 stars, as was of course the food and atmosphere. I really felt they appreciated my business and did everything they could to ensure my return. And boy did they! The cherry on top is the fact that my entree alone was normally $25, but the special dining month pricing put all three courses at just $29 (plus a $10 upgrade fee for the duck since it wasn't on the dining month menu). I will go back and pay full price because of their excellent attention to detail and quality in all categories. Thank you Swank for your exceptional hospitality. Until next time. God I love Portland.

We (my wife and I) have been following Daniel Mondock around a multiplicity of venues for the last several years, starting with Carlyle and progressing through Sel Gris, some place in Dundee, Block & Tackle and a variety of one-off dinners where it turned out he was manning the kitchen (including a memorable new years eve dinner at Roe and a wine affair at one of our local wineries.) There was a burger place in there somewhere but we never made it. Daniel changes jobs more often than a diva changes clothes but, wherever he is at any given time, you know what you are going to get: impeccably and imaginatively prepared dishes leaning in the general direction of seafood but focusing mostly on perfect execution, presentation and quality at a level at which it doesn't really matter what the ingredients are -- you are going to be blown away anyway. Swank (and its lower brow adjunct, Swine) do not vary from the template. Both establishments are located in the Paramount hotel in downtown Portland, the former being a restaurant with bar and the latter (so we heard) being a bar with food. Daniel is the executive chef for both and was very much in evidence when we visited Swank last week. The restaurant had just opened so both Daniel and the manager were obviously nervous about how it would all work out. For us, it worked out spectacularly. For die-hard Mondock fans, the fare is not surprising but the quality is right up there as expected both in terms of the food, its preparation and presentation and in terms of the imaginative (should I say inspired) way in which the various ingredients are combined into a delicious and intriguing whole. If you like to go out to dinner to get food that you can't make just as well at home and that you probably would not have thought of anyway (sweetbreads with poached egg?), this is a must visit establishment. We started out by sharing a plate of classic Mondock calamari, an offering that has been on the menu everywhere he has recently worked. OK, so fried calamari is not exactly an unheard-of dish but it can't be done better than what we had. As an "amuse-bouche" on steroids, we were treated to the foie gras appetizer that, to say the least, is different from what one would normally expect and just has to be tasted to be believed. Presumably this kind of spectacular generosity will not survive the opening period but we were most appreciative anyway. Our actual selections (too amazing to actually describe) were, as anticipated, beautiful to observe, delicious to eat and absolutely unique in conception. We dug in with gusto and were richly rewarded for our effort. Our daughter, who accompanied us, works in the restaurant biz and we are therefore treated on a regular basis to discursions about the need to balance the creative urge with economic reality. Unlike some of his prior efforts, we think that Mondock may be well placed to do this at Swank/Swine where he can combine the growing army of his loyal followers with a reasonable assortment of walk-ins from the Paramount, several other nearby hotels whose restaurants do not come close to matching Swank in either quality or creativity and the upscale business community from the nearby office towers. To do this, however, we think that he is going to need to address the dietary preferences of the business exec on an expense account who thinks that a good steak, grilled and served with the usual accompaniments, is the highest form of culinary expression. We love the menu as it is but, in the interest of our being able to return frequently to the same stand, we hope that it will expand to include a few of the old standards that keep the non-foodie world signing all those lovely credit card slips. In the meantime, Swank can count on at least two loyal followers.

My girlfriends and I stopped in here for a mid-day drink. The place appeared very nice and seemed to be the perfect spot to have a nice drink. My girlfriend and I ordered Pear Bellinis and my other girlfriend ordered a different drink. When our drinks came, our "Pear Bellinis" looked like orange juice! When we tasted them, they tasted like Mimosas! We brought this to the attention of the waiter who confirmed they were "Pear Bellinis" and when we asked why they were full of orange juice he needed to check the menu. We told him that the description in the menu said nothing about orange juice. He proceeded to tell a "Supervisor/Manager" who came to our table with the TUB of pear purée telling us this is what he used. He said he added a splash of orange juice. No where in the description did it say anything about orange juice. They clearly came up with their own concoction because there wasn't anything "pear" about this drink! They stuck to their guns on telling us these were pear! Apparently common sense isn't required to work here, and thankfully we weren't allergic to ORANGES to enjoy a PEAR Bellini!

went here for PDM. the menu on the PDM website was different than what the restaurant was offering once we got there. after some discussion with GM he agreed to honor the menu listed on the website. boyfriend really liked his food, mine was just meh. i wouldn't go downtown to eat here specifically but if we happen to be downtown i would consider it again.

It's a testament to how much Portland has become a veritable mecca of fine dining that there's a cozy little restaurant like this proficiently providing an upscale French-inspired, farm-to-table, Oregonian menu of food and beverage in the hotel district of the city, and that it complements such similarly great places as VQ and Little Bird. The scrumptious pork belly starter was exquisitely plated with a marrow vinaigrette, a puree of roasted garlic, and escargots. The ribeye steak, from a loin masterfully dry-aged on premises, was presented with an ethereal carrot puree, roasted baby root vegetables, and a buttery marrow lurking beneath a shallot marmalade in a little tower of bone. To make the whole meal perfect, a delightful pinot noir from the nearby Yamhill-Carlton AVA had enough structure to stand up nicely to the rich and rustic meat dishes as well as the heavenly flourless chocolate cake that we had for dessert.

Nice, friendly new place. Bartender was very friendly, but most of all knowledgeable on all of his concoctions. We shared the braised rabbit and had several of Johnny's expertly made adult beverages. Nice decor, in that it is all brand new. The place is confusingly next to Swine, the Paramount hotel must only allow one name bars that start with S? Never the less, nice spot. We would definitely return.

What can I NOT say about this place! Absolutely amazing food! Presentation was beautifully done, every flavor of every dish melted in your mouth! One of the best restaurants I have ever eaten at! This place is a must! It is definitely going to be right up with there with the best restaurants in Portland! The service was outstanding and the chef came to our table to ask us personally how we liked everything.

While the menu can be described as "imaginative", as one reviewer put it, other appropriate descriptors might be "alienating", "obscure", "self-indulgent" or "pompous". Maybe it just isn't my style, but I regularly eat out at excellent restaurants and I found there to be very little on this menu to be appealing (or even understandable 50% of the time). Worse, I was shocked at the service. We went with a large group (16) early and were the only people there for a long time. When we ordered drinks the 4 of us that ordered a simple glass of wine or sparkling water had to wait almost 25 minutes to be served. First the bartender had to prepare the 12 special, magical, intricate cocktails that our table mates ordered, which could apparently only be served at together. When I settled on the steak and asked for it to be prepared medium to medium well the waiter looked at me disapprovingly and told me that the chef would likely not do it because he recommended medium rare. It was only after ordering a salad and seeing the disapproving looks of the other guests that he said he would "ask" the chef if he would be "willing" to prepare it that way. Excuse me? Pretentious much? (I get it will affect the tenderness and flavor of the meat. That's the point!) Fortunately, he indulged my personal preference, but he made us pay for it. It was 1 1/2 hours before our appetizers came. I did enjoy my steak, and the speckled hen salad was delicious, but I will not go there again. I can find more variety and better service many other places in this town. If you like game, you may fare better.
