When I first reviewed this place the service was atrocious. While it is still on the slow side, it's gotten significantly better and nothing that should keep you from checking out this hidden little gem.

I love this building, not least because there's a great brewery downstairs. The Stingray manages to make most of the ground floor feel like a cool, open hangout where you can have a beer or a cup of coffee. There's a bar tucked back in the corner with a few taps, and a coffee shop more in the center of the room with full-on lineups of all your caffeine needs. You can grab a table and read, indoors or out. Very pleasant setting to be sure. The service, prices, and coffee here were all right on. Seeing all the old bikes hanging from the ceiling didn't really move me one way or another, but it's clear where the place got its name. I like this spot and would definitely not come back.

Very cool place. Prices were great. Under $20 for two yummy sandwiches.a beer and s pop. I had the Oregonian which is Salmon and cheddar on a ciabatta roll. Very fresh tasting. Husband had the tuna fish both were great. Cool atmosphere. We will be back

Sandwiches are good. Very slow service though. Staff seems to not be in much of a hurry about anything

Found this place by accident! Well, not really!!! We were going to the Blazers' game and seriously didn't want to pay for chitty over priced food at the Rose Garden Center. I LOVE THE FOOD, LOVE THE SERVICE, VERY PORTLAND so if you ain't cool like that, you might mistaken the wait crew as horrible and rude but they ain't!!! THEY ARE COOL LIKE THAT!!! We ordered Tuna Melt and Reuben sandwiches. Mmmmmmmmmmm all good, beer for only $3 (the Rose Garden is $7). Win win situation! :)

I had a really nice time. I despise parking options, but it's the location. It's very tricky to park and you must be on your toes or you'll miss it. I enjoyed a breakfast bagel and a cup of joe. $6 Batdorff and Bronson - winner! The bagel was well prepared. Egg, Bacon in a tight little package. Bagel was something of an Everything Bagel - it had great texture. The space is nice. Large, garage door type windows. The counter staff was friendly, efficient. Taps of cider and beer. TV screens. The counter/bar top can be a bit confused and it doesn't exactly flow.

Awesome open space with cool woodwork. Great place to get some work done in peace and quiet. Really nice staff too!

I have a frustrating diet that I don't expect people to cater to, but it's really nice when they do! This place has some really good vegan sandwiches and also carry a variety of milk options and gluten free pastries! I've also had nothing but super genuinely nice service.

Food is decent. Only sandwiches really. Staff are not that friendly or helpful. Orders take forever. For a spot with so many regulars there is little effort to relate to people.

I just love this place! The people behind the bar are soo friendly, feels like Cheers where everybody knows your name....c'mon sing along with me! :) This is a great place to get a beer and some awesome sandwiches before a Blazers/Winterhawks game. I have started coming here even when there's no game on.. Almost didn't want to do a review on this, coz it's one of our best-kept secrets... Portland is full of little gems like this..but figured I shouldn't be selfish. That's just not nice.

Seriously. 15 minutes for two Americanos. Why? Whyyyyy???? As a barista myself, I really wanted to get behind the counter and make our drinks so we could get going. They weren't busy at all. There were a couple of standard "bagel and coffee" orders before us, but nothing that warranted 15 minutes for basically espresso and water to go. The person working was "nice" and kind of.... peculiar. Like a baby deer staring into headlights. I felt like maybe she was a bit too flirty with my partner? Tacky. Back the freak off. She had no multitasking skills whatsoever. You CAN make coffee while a bagel toasts, I promise. It's ok. In a city full of experienced baristas, this is what you offer your customers... you know, the people who pay your bills? I give two stars because our drinks at least tasted alright. I was worried... especially after the first 10 minutes of waiting, when she asked "Did you want those for here or to go?". Yikes. To go, like, yesterday. I like the interior and if the service were better, I might even find myself wandering in for a cocktail. But if I can't even get my day started correctly here, I sure as shit can't end it smoothly here either. Someone mentioned that this place is "VERY PORTLAND" and that the service is "COOL LIKE THAT". So you are telling me Portland is mediocre at best? God, get over it. Pft.

I work in the leftbank building. And have been eating lunch here for a while. They have the worst customer service and take the longest time to make your food. An hour to make a sandwich! I will no longer support your vapid business.

With standard coffee prices and a friendly staff, it is one of the very few non-chain coffee shops within walking distance of the Rose Quarter. Stingray does exactly what you need it to do especially if you are working out of Left Bank.

This place has a big asterisk. No, literally there is a huge asterisk over the coffee bar. What should follow is: "Note: food is made from fresh ingredients that in totality are totally delicious." I had the Oregonian sandwich, which I loved. The space is fun and collaborative as well.

Central location and nice interior. Pretty basic cafe fare. Service is pretty decent unless you get the girl who dyes her hair black. She is always rude to me and any one I arrive with in spite of the fact that I am always polite and tip her sorry ass.

  • Jenny S.

The staff was rude. The cafe was closed before the hours listed on the door. Why in the world would we ever go back when basic niceties cannot even be met? Forget about the food.

Absolutely a great pre-blazer game watering hole. The fans are friendly and the staff is fine. Downstairs is Upright Brewing's taproom. I stop here for pre game drink before almost every home game.

A friend asked me to meet her here. I was a little hesitant, given the bad reviews, but I also know that the bar is set pretty high in Portland, especially for food, coffee and ambiance. The parking in this area is paid and limited to 90-120 minutes. I easily outlived my 90 minute limit and we stood talking next to one car while my friend watched nervously as a car next to her was towed. Inside, it's not really a cafe so much as a food stand in a lobby. Kind of like the airport with hustle and bustle going on all around. Without the really annoying announcements. In the afternoon, there was sun coming in through the large windows, though, and I really enjoyed that. I got a sandwich for $6 and a coffee, bringing the total to $8. Which is not bad. The sandwich was a tuna melt on rye. The coffee was self-serve and while not outstanding, was hot and fine. My sandwich came up and was never announced. I happened to look up and see something sitting there on the counter. I got up to investigate, noticed it was a tuna melt and inquired. Yes, your sandwich is ready, the gal announced. I got napkins and headed back to my seat. The tuna had way too much mayo and wasn't especially hot but then I don't know how long it was sitting on the counter. I later saw someone else approach their food and ask if it belonged to them. They got the same cheery response I did -- as if they did their job by answering the question correctly! The wet tuna made the bread moist so that upon grilling it became kind of sticky in my teeth. But it was tasty and the cheese was good and I ate the whole thing. I was hungry and then I wasn't. Mission accomplished. Nothing to write home about but I got some work done, had a meeting and got food and drink. A solid three star experience.

Update for visit on 8/23 Gave Stingray another try since I was doing work in the building. Ordered a veggie burger....asked what was on it. Cheese, lettuce, onion, tomato, pesto, etc. When I got it....no cheese. I was too hungry to complain. I also felt it was weird that it was called the "Garden Burger" so I was looking for an actual veggie burger patty....made of what else...veggies right!? What I got was more of a rice patty. Literally a patty made of rice. Had I known this I wouldn't had ordered. I've never seen a rice patty on a burger before. At least not one that had all rice. It was weird. And too many carbs. Sad day. Also... AGAIN...food takes FOREVER to come out. 20 minutes to get a sandwich? Really? Do yourself a favor and only get something that's pre-made. Not worth it.

I recently started working in the leftbank building and gave this cafe a solid 2 week try thinking that maybe the service or ingredient availability was a fluke. The baristas think they are too cool for their job, they take 20 minutes to make a sandwich and a few can't even seem to generate enough energy to smile. I would argue that the food is half decent, but given that half the times I've gone, they don't have eggs or tomatoes I'm not sure I can even suggest they have consistent food, much less food consistently. I don't need a dose of pretentiousness served with my latte. I'm boycotting this place.

This review is for espresso service only. First visit was an exercise in extreme patience as the staff behind the counter consisted of a hapless trainee, a jaded trainer, and a "cook" who probably can't/don't have to jump in to help at the order counter. Basically, it took about 20 minutes to get a latte. And there were only two people ahead of me. If I didn't need a coffee jolt right then and there, I would've walked away after 5 minutes. Alas, I grinned and bore it, but vowed never to return. Alas part 2, I did have to come back the following day because caffeine-deficiency. Thankfully, the service was much better, as it was on several subsequent visits. I think I may have just caught them on a bad day. Anyway, if in the area, it's a good stop for java.

Worst service ever! Turned away all of us because they couldn't cook for 20 minutes. Wouldn't even let us pay and wait bc it "would be too confusing" . I was blown away by how rude the server was to us!

Stingray says it is closed on weekends but it is always open before Blazers, Winterhawks, or any event. Cheap beer 3.00 and 4.00 well!

THE STAFF IS BEYOND RUDE and provided me with the worst customer service I have ever received. Look, I get it, it's a trendy NE Portland Coffee stop in the morning. That does not give their staff the right to belittle their customers. Walking into the place, we were greeted with a glare, not a smile. When I went to order I asked a question about one of the drinks and I was interrupted mid-sentence with a rude explanation of the drink. I proceeded to look at the menu to find another option and the barista was loudly tapping her pen and glaring as I decided on a menu item. Keep in mind, there was no line behind me. After 10 minutes, the barista came back up with my bagel sandwich and slammed it on the counter in front of me. Not the way you treat a customer let a lone anyone. How management allows this type of customer service is beyond me. We won't be back, and I could encourage others to do the same. There are far better options up the road where customer service is not lost for the trendy Portland coffee vibe. To me, a collaborative space is not worth being treated poorly.

This place does a mean mocha. It is light and sweet. It is also fairly cheap. It had a wonderful tuna melt. It was almost akin to a grilled cheese sandwich. It was delicious and a bit oily. But then again it is fast food. It is right there. I enjoyed the meal. It was fairly cheap. It is in easy walking distance from Broadway Bridge near Lovejoy. You walk in. You walk out. There is limited parking since it is located on a 'Y' shaped street.

I don't know much about their coffee, and the sandwiches seemed pretty dinky, but... $3 pints and $4 well drinks before games - can't hate on that!

Attended an all day workshop at the Portland Public School building..a break for lunch and we started wandering...this place was about across the street but we didn't go in at first...looked more like a bar or something, we couldn't really tell and not very inviting for a lunch crowd in a hurry. HOWEVER we wandered around for the next ten minutes and never found another place so we went back. I am really happy. Even though several of us found our way, they managed to get food out quickly. I think the secret is that the menu is very simple, but very, very good. I had the Carolina pulled pork..and it was one of the best I have ever eaten (serious!) I had the other half for breakfast the next day and dreamed about it for three days. My friends had the tuna sandwich (can't remember the cute name) and another one she said was wonderful. So next time you are in the area look for me...I will be the one in the corner with bar-b-que sauce smeared over my smile!

Woody Allen once said, every time a gentile orders a pastrami on rye with mayonnaise, a Jew dies. This pastrami on rye also had thick cuts of romaine lettuce, thick cuts of tomatoes, and thick cuts of onions. The pastrami was microwaved. The sandwich was put through a panini press after which the saturated rye bread had the thickness and hardness or corrugated steel. I'm afraid this is not the place to go for a pastrami sandwich.

Went to Stingrays a few times and was impressed with the service that I received each time. Had ordered a sandwich that was good and healthy and they had it made in time for me to get back to work. The lady behind the counter was very nice and friendly with good suggestions. Wish I could remember her name. Anyway, I've been referring everyone at work to come check it out

To me Customer Service is everything. If the service stinks then there is no way I can eat the food. I went in for a a Reuben and I don't know what that is that they made but it was not my definition of a Reuben. It had one slice of meat, mayo, tomato and onions. And I can understand if they put a twist on the Reuben, but to me they were way off the mark and the Customer service was awful! I could not eat the sandwich and the vibe in that place was all wrong for me. Thanks but NO Thanks!!!!

To have a bad Cafe in Portland is almost impossible, but the Stingray Cafe has managed to do just that! What type of cafe is not open when people want coffee in the morning? I strolled in there today at 9:30 AM and they were still not open. This has happened to me several times. Do not waste your time with this cafe, if you could call it that..

The service is not good. Super slow every time I have been here. The sandwiches are very mediocre. The inconsistency is the worst. Sometimes they have soup. Sometimes not. Sometimes bagels. Sometimes not. Inconsistent food, very mediocre food and poor service make this place a MUST NOT on my list.

I've had great things (beef & mushroom pasties) and mediocre things (reuben sandwich) from this cafe. I've tried several of the pasties and they have always been very good. They're easy for to-go lunches and are filling. The sandwich board on the other hand seems hastily put together (like the sandwiches themselves). I've never had anyone ask me if I want pesto spread on my reuben before and it was unsettling. The breakfast bagel sandwiches I've tried have been good, although any food order here seems to take quite some time. They seem to be somewhat understaffed, with only one barista to make all of the drinks and the food orders on any given day. I've also had great espresso drinks from here, and awful ones. It seems to depend on the barista - one of which I saw training with another employee a few weeks back. The new barista hasn't made me a good espresso drink yet so I stay away from them when she's working. It's a shame that the this place can't be more consistent because I live so close and the staff has always been friendly.
