Nothing modern about this place except the beer selection. And that -- the commitment to old-school -- is why it is AWESOME. I hadn't been to Stark Street Pizza in probably 10 years, until last weekend. Oh it's sounded good for a long time, but I've lived out in the western suburbs for quite a while now and we just don't get out Gateway direction very often. It was exactly as I remembered. Dark, with red walls and kitschy decor. The pizza is the old style crunchy crust with the little pepperonis that curl up into little cups. The sauce is perfect, not spicy, and the cheese is perfect. The entire thing is just perfect. It's just like every pizza place was back in the day, before pizza became divided into either the artisan/brick oven camp or the national bland delivery chains. Back when each town had ONE pizza place, the kind of place that sponsored the little league teams and you'd have your 8th birthday there and they'd have a balloon tied to a stick for every kid and you'd play table arcade games and Mom would have an iceburg lettuce salad on a frosted plate. And they call your number at the microphone when it's ready and you go grab it and someone else, younger sibling maybe, grabs a stack of plates. Those kind of places. This is exactly what Stark Street inspires, those memories. It's perfect. Except now my fiance's a little mad at me, because in all of the years we've been together I've never insisted on driving across town for pizza. And he LOVED it. So apparently, we'll be doing this more often now... which is just fine by me.

You notice almost all the bad reviews are by from-aways? Pietro's (I miss Pietro's) and Shakey's had a baby. It has cheap beer, a non-gross salad bar, the keno, and good pizza. Is it New York Style? Don't care, NYC doesn't even have a singular pizza style. The food's good, the service is laid-back and doesn't care about unimportant crap, they make good pie, and they know how to steer around food allergies. This is Portland. We don't care how you do it in New York, and if you want it New Haven-style (i.e. real East Coast pizza) go to Apizza Scholls. Otherwise, a plane ticket to JFK and a cab to Patsy's, L&B, or Grimaldi's will be a better investment. You wanna have a good time and leave with a smile and a full belly for a reasonable price, come here.

You remember Shakey's Pizza? I swear the Shakey's people and Stark Street are in cahoots with each other. I loved Shakey's growing up and love Stark Street now that I'm older. What sets them apart from other pizza shops is their crust. Thin, with a yellow cornmeal dusting. It's delicious! Pro-tip: the luncheon special is a great deal and is available all day, not just during lunch.

I grew up in Portland and can't remember ever eating here although I've driven by it hundreds of times over the years. What a shame. I will definitely be making up for lost time. I LOVE the crust. Thin and crunchy. The cornmeal dusting on the bottom adds subtle texture. I'm not a fan of thick crust pizza. I don't like a big wad of dough in my mouth. This pizza lets the toppings be the star and there are no uneaten crusts anywhere. I checked. Everyone eats the whole pizza. The service is friendly, accomodating and quick. There is a player piano and pinball machine that I happily spent many quarters on playing. They are celebrating their 50th anniversary this month - that pretty much says it all.

One of my favorite pizza places in Portland. The pizza is always good. The prices are average. People there are friendly.

The worst pizza ever! The crust was TO crispy and the pizza pretty tasteless! Why 3 stars? Because the people were nice and the places decor kept our 2 year old entertained so our meal was peaceful!

This was my very first time at this pizza place. The pizza is very excellent. I will go back in a heartbeat. We had a half red sauce and half white sauce Winterhawk. It was very delicious. yummy

I would have given this place 0 stars if i could. .. worst pizza ever! Hard crust.. very toddler unfriendly. Almost choked my 2yo. Dirty gross place. The chairs looked like they had dirt build up from the 80's. The bathrooms were very filthy.. garbage all over the soap dispenser didnt work which means nobody can wash there hands and touching everything in the resturant with poopy fingers.. Also the games for kids ate my sons quarters and didnt let him play. The line was super long with only one person taking orders MY WHOLE FAMILY GOT SICK AFTER BEING THERE!! HIGH TEMPS

Love the small pepperonis that come on the pizza. I personally like the thin crust but I can see how it would turn others off. Salad bar has a huge variety of items so there's a plus! Drinks are reasonably priced. Always recommend getting your beer in a mug vs. the pint. Be prepared to wait a bit for your pizza though.

Stark street pizza company is just good honest pizza. Its been around for ever making good quality pizza. Its a unique place that some might call dated but i think it adds to the charm of this east side institution. $5.50 cents for a 25oz mug of microbrew. Hell no one in town can beat that pice. I dont go there enough and need to start going more

The "Holy Grail" of pizza. Nectar of the Gods. It's all about the crust. Crispy. Crunchy. And with cornmeal. Sauce is tart with a little sweetness. Stark Street has created a time tested, successful recipe. Considering current prices from other pizza joints, your wallet won't get too bruised. A Portland icon. To me, this is the best pizza in Portland. The Hawaiian is the best of sweet and savory( much to the dismay of ex-pat New Yorkers). Pepperoni is crispy, done perfectly. Been coming here for well over 30+ years. Take that, Brooklyn !!

By far and away the best pizza on the planet. It is really hard to describe how this crispy crusted pizza could be so revolutionary, but that corn meal crust is amazing. Those cute little pepperoni make each bite mouthwatering delicious. The salad bar is not a bad deal either. Used to be better when it was unlimited trip, but the large plate allows you enough to make about two trips on one plate. Gigantic soda glasses allow you to wash it all done with ease. So kick back, dont be afraid of the bear. Put a Qtr in the piano and enjoy a true pizza parlor.

I REALLY REALLY DON'T LIKE STARK STREET PIZZA. It's not because of the service, atmosphere, location... nothing. It's honestly just because their pizza tastes BAD. The crust is "traditional" made with corn and is neon yellow. I feel sick every time I eat it and the crust legitimately tastes like cardboard... well it has the texture of cardboard anyways. I would rather eat ANY other pizza over stark street. Plus it isn't cheap by all means. I don't get it...

Did the pizza change? Salad bar and the decor are awesome, though. Player piano is super fun! We have eaten here a few times before while traveling, and have enjoyed it so much, we make an effort to come whenever in town. After today, we likely won't return. Pizza crust was crunchy and had a slightly burned taste. And they don't cook the tomatoes on the pizza! They should really mention that when you're ordering. I assumed everything I ordered on my pizza would be cooked...

Awesome Pizza - Really Poor Service. We've had pizza three times from this place. Pizza - 5 starts. The atmosphere is awesome when you come in - fireplace right in the middle, family style booths, tons of beer on tap. The staff that work here are not really much on customer service. My husband ordered pizza for us one night while waiting in a booth to take the pizza home and ordered beer to go with it while we waited for it to cook (20 minutes). Our beers took forever to be poorer even though my husband waited at the same counter he ordered. We got our beers pretty much right before our pizza was done. I didn't deal with the guy he ordered from but my husband said he was nothing but snotty as my husband ordered. The last time I came in for take out (we decided to call ahead), it was not as busy. There was no line so we walked up straight to the counter where there were three staff members just talking and joking. The girl looked straight at us but continued to stay and listen to the conversation until it ended which was a few minutes later. Then she slowly moseyed to the register (which was like only five feet away) and then greeted us. So in summary - great pizza, but crappy service. The staff so far every time I go act like they have better things to do than to take care of their customers.

Really like the atmosphere here. There are so many artifacts that it looks like my grandmother's basement. This is generally our first-night dinner place when we come up from the SF Bay area to visit our daughter and grandson. Pizza with fairly thin style crust, but not so this that it seems cracker style. Fresh ingredients, including fresh mushrooms as an option. Open late, which is a plus, and I am really impressed that they continually replaced the items on the (very extensive) salad bar, even when they were not busy - I have not patronized the salad bar, but I definitely would not hesitate to. Running family joke- There is a taxidermy bear in a glass case near the front of the restaurant. Grandson: 'Hey bear - would you like a slice of pizza?' Grandpa (as the bear): 'No thanks, I'm stuffed.' addendum - What happened to the Pac-Man machine? This was the main reason my grandson wanted to come here. Not a deal breaker yet, but we will be exploring other options in the area.

Love the pizza, not all that fond of the decor. We get pizza from here almost once a week. The staff is always nice and the pizza quality is outstanding. Sometimes the wait to pay (we always call in "to go") is a bit long as people try to decide what they want, but it's well worth it. And it's great fried the next day!

Yum! This place is so close to home, I don't know why it's taken me so long to eat here. The crust is absolutely delish! It's thin and crispy on the edge and chewy in the center. So darn good! Not sure why this place doesn't have better reviews. If you like Pizza Baron off of 122nd and Division, you should definitely give this place a try! They have little pepperoni that are awesome because you get some pepperoni in every bite :D They also have a great salad bar. Very fresh and a huge variety. Definitely two thumbs up. It's refreshing to have some fresh veggies with the carb overload! Decor inside take you back.. Probably back to a time I could remember or was even born. Either way, I find it fun and fitting for a pizza parlor.

My review is for the pizza and salad bar. I've been coming to Stark Street for more than 30 years. It seems the quality of the ingredients used is changing, and for the worse! The salad is straight out of a bag now for the iceberg mix. The Canadian bacon is rubbery and looks foreign and the lettuce on our pizza was browning. We've noticed this decline the last 5 years and it's sad. It's been a family favorite for many years. Prices are up and quality is down. I don't know if I'll go back anymore. If you aren't a regular you might think it's fine.

If you miss the pizza parlors of the 80's this is the place! Cornmeal crust reminiscent of Pietros, salad bar, giant beers, video games, a fireplace, and tons of crazy crap on the walls and ceiling. Yeah, it's a little run down and I hate that sometimes you have to pass six unbussed tables to find a clean one, but the place isn't trying to be anything its not. Affordable, unpretentious pizza and plenty to keep the kids entertained. Bring quarters.

Think old time pizza parlor from the 70s or 80s and you've got this place. Kinda dark, not much window space seen from deep inside the restaurant. A lot of sports memorabilia and funky historic chochkies hung on the wall. Arcade video games. TV's on the walls. I've wanted to go in here for awhile, because I've heard they have a good salad bar. Why are salad bars so hard to find these days? I miss them. Anyway, they really do have a good salad bar. It's clean and a large selection. For a lunch special, you can get a small personal pizza and the salad bar for a pretty good price. I would definitely return.

The decorations at Stark Street are awesome. Giant bear in a glass case, all kinds of old stuff on the walls. Looks like they haven't touched anything on the walls in 25 years. The fireplace is best. Pizza is not mind blowing, but I think it's pretty good. It's a different crust than most places serve, so at the very least it puts some variety into your pizza diet. We really haven't deviated much from ordering the Stark Street Classic and a couple mammoth mugs of IPA. Hits the spot for my wife and myself so why venture away from a good thing? Location is great, especially for a southeaster like myself. I've never had any problem with service here. Wish the pizza was just a hair cheaper, but where can you really get cheap, good pizza in this town?

This is the pizza of my youth...literally. My dad always brought me here for lunch on his weekends. I have a lot of great memories. So, when my wife and kids and I were in the area and we were discussing lunch options, I made a command decision to come here (it's been nearly 20 years). Easy choice, and a great one. Walking in was so nostalgic. Not much has changed. The ambiance. The counters. The food. All was the same. I ordered my old stand-by (pepperoni). Awesome. I love the thin cracker-like crust and how the little pepperoni curls up into little cups. It was just as I remembered.

I really like the pizza here. Nice atmosphere. Even though they have plenty of seating it is hard to find a place on busy nights. People know where good pizza is in Portland. I don't come here often enough!

This pizza is perfect. Its got thin, crispy crust and the perfect amount of toppings. Great salad bar with a ton of choices. Beer on tap Is served I'm a frozen, frosty thick glass. There is only one pizza like that I like more, and that's because I grew up going to the other place.

Let's get down to it. SS Pizza is good. It's got a bunch of stuff on the walls, fireplaces etc. Great for kids. For the pizza, man...I don't know. It doesn't do anything for me. The sauce isn't noteworthy. The toppings are fresh, and It's not a bad pizza per se. Go if you have kids and want a fun place for family. The service is okay, what you'd expect from kids and Portland. The salad bar is pretty good and they have big drinks. Gone twice, and barring any kind of family event, I'd probably hit Hot Lips or Schmizza.

I really liked the Winterhawk Pizza. It has a very pizza place feel to it. Will go back and try others. I would recommend it for anyone. The 10 inch was perfect for the two of us. Plus side, you can order a beer.

I think Yelp's 3 star "A-OK" describes Stark Street Pizza Company well. This parlour has been in business since 1965 and looks like it. The owners have not remodeled, so if you're in a wheelchair, be cautious. You'll have trouble getting in and there's no accessible restroom. I added that, because it gives the rest of you some perspective on the decor and menu for the place. The parlour reminds me of the pizza parlour where my parents took me growing up. They were teenagers during the 1960s and 1970s U.S. revival of the "gay nineties." The town where I grew up used to have a "Gaslamp Pizza" and "Gay Nineties" pizza parlor. Both were dark places with big booth banquettes and party rooms alongside. Neither is still in business, but the other parlour at home is in the same vein. This place is from the same era and has the same feel. When I was a kid, the pizza parlour we went to had video games, a walled off bar, and a fireplace. It also had a full salad bar and three counters for ordering (pizza, soda, alcoholic beverages). Stark St. is much the same in all of these. As for the food, a free refill 20+ oz. mug is $2 for sodas and beer, wine and liquor are available. The place's lounge area is walled off for the "keno" games although now keno is out in the open but Oregon video lottery (slot) and video poker games are hidden from view. We ordered a 10" pizza and it was enough for two. It reminds me of pizza from that era. It had thin, crunchy basic crust with plain marinara but high quality toppings, including odd little pepperoni pieces. The Hawaiian half was covered well in pineapple. Old Town Pizza tastes very similar, but with a thick crust around the edge. They have drink specials some nights of the week, including Blue Moon for $2.50 on Mondays. Decor is pretty random, hanging from the ceiling, mostly. There is a giant stuffed bear with hockey sticks and an old player piano that supposedly took quarters. Neon signs and antiquated "no smoking seating area" signs add to the memories.

I want to give it a better rating. Their pizza just wasn't very good. We got a daily special --Canadian Bacon and Tomato-- and it was very bland. the crust really added nothing, the sauce was bland, the pepperoni was pretty boring and the tomatoes were raw and just tossed on top. we seriously got about 2 full tomatoes on top of the pizza. The tomato's juice made the pizza cold and we picked all of it off. The middle of the pie was not even cooked all the way through. We both said we wouldn't be back. It's a shame, since it's so close to where we live. Their salad bar was impressive, though, and seemed pretty fresh. They do have a decent selection of beer and I think they have a Monday craft pint special.

This is right on par with Chuckie Cheese. Outdated restaurant from the 1960's that lost its charm. So dark inside it was hard to see. They screwed our take out order up. Wanted a extra pepperoni well done. Got an Aloha pizza with extra pepperoni. The pepperoni was more like "Pupperoni" the dog treat. It had a funny cardboard taste to it and we could not eat it. So it was a bust and a bust. Great for kids I guess. Big salad bar. I don't know why people go there other than it is cheap.

I am so sick of being treated like a criminal when trying to order a freakin' pizza! I'm not writing to complain as to the quality of the pizza at Stark Street, as I've been a huge fan of the old style thin crust pizza reminiscent of the Pietros of old. But what I can't stand is being treated like a criminal when I want to order--and pay for--a pie over the phone. I called in tonight and made this request and was told that it was "company policy" not to take cards over the phone. I inquired as to why this policy was in place, to which I was told that that's just what they do. I then inquired as to what they do when someone's card is having difficulty in the reader when someone is in front of them, do they not key in the numbers right then and there? I was told, yes, they do that, but they won't do it over the phone. So I asked them, "so what you're telling me is that you CAN help me, you just won't." The girl on the phone quickly changed the subject, telling me I can call the manager tomorrow, to which I replied that I don't need a pizza tomorrow, I need a pizza tonight. I then inquire as to what they'd do if, say, I was calling from corporate headquarters in Minnesota and wanted to order 10 pies for my field office in Portland, to which I was told that I'd have to talk to a manager again. I then asked who it was they were trying to protect? In the event of a fraudulent charge, it's the card company who always picks up the bill. There is no point to this completely pointless policy. Needless to say, despite enjoying their pizza, I'll be taking my business elsewhere. And FYI, if anyone's looking for a quality pie from a company who won't treat you like you're a criminal, Lonesome's Pizza was happy to take my order over the phone. It's been real Stark Street.

Pizza pizza!!! I looove pizza and I am now in love with stark street. This place has a ton of character and the minute I walked in I felt like a total kid inside. There is a huge stuffed grizzly to greet everyone at the door. There are a ton of old school leather covered booths with large push in buttons. There are multiple rooms. One in the back is a little smaller and more quiet. The pizza is thin crust and made more with corn than flour. You don't get that bloated feeling when you are done. The toppings are fresh and tasty. Mozzarella is bomb! The salad bar is top notch! What don't they have is the question!!! A few video poker games and video games. This place is so great! My new favorite pizza joint. Go stark street!

Bring some money, some of the pizzas are spendy! With that said this is an good place to hang out and eat some good pizzas! I made my own and it was like 16 dollars for a medium pizza!! The staff was friendly and the place was clean and neat! The pizzas here are good to me and you like pizzas you should try this place!!

Holy, not good Batman. I stopped in about 9p.m. on a Saturday night. The atmosphere hits you like a ton of bricks. Straight out of 1960, which would be nice if it looked like someone had dusted their memorabilia since the 60's. I should have know it was going to be a struggle when they were pushing their lunch special at 9 at night. It included an individual 3 topping pizza and the salad bar. I went for it. I got Pepperoni, sausage and mushrooms. This might be the worst pizza I have ever had. The sausage was bland to the point that I didn't realize it was on there until I noticed a different texture. And the crust, oh let us speak of the crust. People on here described it as crunchy, which can be nice. I thought it tasted like a stale cracker. I was glad I only got an individual pizza as I didn't want to finish that. The saving grace for this place was the service. They were very nice and even changed a TV to football so I could enjoy a game. That was appreciated. As for the food, swing and a miss.

We like this place, the salad bar and the thin crispy pizza, and the "flash back to the 70's"decor. Daughter does NOT like the grizzly bear, but there are places to sit where you don't have to look at him. Go thin and crispy on the crust, we like canadian bacon and black olive. We also like the BBQ chicken, hold the tomato. It's fun to go in here and remember my (cough) childhood days.

let me first admit to being a pizza snob. and i fully understand that pizza is one of those unique foods that can vary greatly. toppings, crust, sauce, etc. a co-worker recommend this place after I had complained about other sub-par pizza joints. I saw that stark street wasn't very highly reviewed, but seeing that this is in my hood, decided to try it anyway. the atmosphere is the best thing about this place. the salad bar is the next best thing. the pizza is really really really not good. lets start from the top. we got sausage, pepperoni, and onion (pretty basic). the pepperoni was those little circles that come on roller skating rink pizza, the sausage chunks were the size of peas, and the cheese was thicker than the crust (gut bomb deal breaker), and sauce....the sauce was NON existent (deal breaker #2). the salad bar was bomb, but didn't save this review.

I love this place for it's quirky decor, yummy pizza, discount micro brew Monday, and fireplace. The pizza isn't amazing or anything, but it is solidly good. And I love sitting next to the fire place, especially in the booth next to it. They have a salad bar, but I haven't tried it yet, maybe next time. Monday night has $2.50 micro brews!

This is a great neighborhood pizza place. I love the decor and the ambiance - they even have an authentic Ms. Pacman video game that you can play at the entrance! They have a huge salad bar and the pizza is quite good. We ordered the Stark Street Special which isn't my favorite but that was due to the toppings, not the quality. I'm looking forward to going back and trying another type of pizza.

Pretty neat place, lots of different things all over the walls. Really friendly service too. Just wish the food had been more than mediocre. The pizza crust was crisp, but had a kind of stale crunch to it. The pizza was also a bit more expensive than many other places, but there was a good amount of toppings which almost makes up for the price. The salad bar had a large variety of items like different kinds of pickles, potato salad, and macaroni salad. Unfortunately, they were all excesivly bland except one spicy macaroni salad. In addition to the normal iceberg/carrot/cabbage mix there was also separate mixed greens and spinige. Overall the place was fun to visit and the food was OK. Definetly not a place I would rave about, but it is worth a stop.

Stark Street is for me the only pizza restaurant in Portland, the pizza is like none other in town. Its a place I grew up going to, I remember being terrified of the big stuffed grizzly bear in the front when I was really young. The Good: -Delicious Pizza. Yes its greasy, so greasy that the pepperoni's collect a pool of grease inside them. Don't like greasy food? I probably just made your stomach sick, but if you don't mind it dine on! The crust is like no other pizza, paper thin, crispy and out of this world. -Fast, Friendly Service. Consistently good service here and it doesn't take long (usually under 15 minutes) for a fresh hot pizza. -Cool atmosphere. I love the turn of the century memorabilia and vibe. The So-So: -Spendy Pizza. Approximately $23 for a large pizza. Pretty expensive when you can get 2 medium sized pizza at Dominos for around $12. However, the quality is worth the extra price, so don't be afraid to give it a try.

1 star for service. I called in my order and wasn't given the special. After I paid I questioned the cashier about it. The reason was because I added olives. He said "Skynet dude. It's the computers". I guess he didn't realize that I was actually perturbed about being overcharged. What recourse do I have besides writing a yelp review?

I have been eating here for over 30 years. Best pizza, bar none, if you like thin cornmeal crust. I'm sure the other toppings are good, but to truly experience Stark St. pepperoni is what you want and nothing else! I like the atmosphere but the booths are showing their age and aren't that comfortable anymore.

I wanted to give no stars for this review but it makes you choose at least one star. My husband and I went in the past once and ordered the pepperoni pizza. We enjoyed it so we decided to go back. What a mistake that was. We ordered the garlic lovers veggie and added pepperoni. It has artichoke hearts, mushrooms, black olives, roasted red pepper, onion, and sun dried tomatoes. Oh yeah and apparently loads of Fresh garlic. There was nothing fresh about this pizza. It was horrible. Nothing on the pizza was "fresh". Canned toppings made the pizza tasteless. We ended up piling on the parmesan cheese just to add flavor to it. The sauce was bland and lifeless. I like crispy crust but this was a little too crispy for me, like eating cardboard. We won't be back again this was such a disappointment. We are going to just stick to the Rock Pizzeria for the better quality and variety.

I can't count how many times I've been to Stark Street. I have been coming here since I was a little girl so going on 3 decades now. These days I have my own kids and the relaxed vibe is a nice change from other restaurants where the kids are more confined to their seats. There are a couple video games out front and a funhouse mirror, two of those claw machines where you try to grab toys, and a player piano which sits next to a taxidermied bear in a glass case. The player piano is a particular hit with the kids and we usually try to remember to bring a handful of quarters. I have been a fan of the pizza in general for the thin, crispy crust and the toppings--we often order pepperoni, feta and olives and the cooked pepperoni would curl into crispy little bowls. Tasty! There is an okay salad bar and there is beer. My family went here for dinner a few nights ago. Another patron was admiring my youngest child for her curly hair and gave her a $5 bill to play games. When I put it in the change machine, I only got 4 quarters back. When I told the cashier he asked me if I was sure it was a $ 5 but immediately gave me $4 in quarters from the till. My kids were happily feeding quarters to the player piano until it took one and didn't play a song. I have seen the piano out of order and it has eaten my quarters in the past so I thought it might be broken. It is old, after all. The kids ran to their dad who was at the counter and told him the piano stopped. He told the guy at the counter and this guy was SO rude! He snidely informed "it only plays ONE song" for a quarter. It was explained that we know how the machine works and it simply ate a quarter. He came out and put another quarter in and while walking past he said "Here is your SECOND song." What the heck, seriously. We had a pile of quarters in front of us and after spending $50+ on pizza and drinks we aren't trying to scam the place for a lousy quarter. Maybe that guy thought I had already scammed them for $4 from the change machine and the lost song just added insult to injury. But he just openly acted like we were stupid or liars or both. Insulting. Plus the pizza hasn't even been that good the last few times we have been there. More limp and greasy than thin and crispy. Very disappointing. After decades of patronage, I won't be back.

OMG what horrible, burnt crust. I'd heard for years this place had good pizza. Well, the toppings were ok, but the crust was horrible. Quite burnt and it was so damn thin, that it basically was about 1/5 the thickness of a saltine cracker, and tasted worse, what there was of it that wasn't burnt. I did NOT ask for an extra thin--basically nonexistent--crust. When I complained to the girl at the counter, she told me, you have to ask for light crust. So I said, well that's the first time I've been told by a pizza place that I have to ask to not get a burnt crust. She argued with me...saying, we cook it crispy, that's how we do it. I said, no, you burnt it. She wouldn't listen. She might as well of told me to eff off. They'll never get another dime from me. Ridiculous.

This is one of the last good old fashioned thin crust with yummy sauce pizzas out there. It has great flavor, texture, and an awesome salad bar too. The staff has been around awhile so they treat customers very well. Highly recommend it!

Biggups for the unadulterated blast of nostalgia that greets you as soon as you enter. It' s a little surprising (and disappointing!) they don't have the old western-style swinging "mini-me" doors ala many a Spaghetti Western-cum- re-run of the Big Valley or Bonanza. Idle question: Would saloons and denizens of the old (South) West have even known about pizza? Something tells me no, but maybe there were enough immigrants bleeding to the old west by the turn of the 20th centurey, before the old west truly died..... who knows. Again: idle question. I'm over-filled with them. Back to Stark Street:: The sign says "since 1965" and I don't know if that means they 've been in this same place since '65, but it seems entirely possible. Certainly, the decor is of a no later vintage than, say, the very early 80s. Remember Shaky's Pizza and Smoky's and even a Little Organ Grinder? Stark St. has elements of each, and it works for them. They even still have the player piano that was pumping out gay old rag-time-ish tunes since I was last there as a boy. The salad bar was classic pizza joint salad bar stuff--- I counted at least 4 varieties of Jello, and let's face it, there can never be enough of this, in any truly free civilization... The pizza itself--- well, it's true what consensus seems to say here, thin crust is where it's at . the toppings are well-proportioned and distributed, but at 15" their XL's seemed like an old pair of Levis I wore in high school that somehow are still in the closet: they're terrifyingly small...and By no means adequate for the present task at hand... Next is the price: Nick can throw down some good recipes, and bravo for the seafood combo platter, but at nearly $30 a pie--again, for those skimpy-seeming little 'zas. I guess after flying pie and Chicago style, normal size pizzas develop a hang dog (deserved) sense of inadequacy... In Sum, as to taste, and ingredients, and waitstaff, and of course the show-stopper thin crust, Stark St. is a quite good pick. But it's expensive for what you get; and it's not like there aren't competitors lining the streets! Also, Stark St. doesn't deliver---like, AT ALL. This is tantamount to pure pizza-fied sacrilege! So SSPC gets dinged a couple of well-considered points. Until they roll back their prices to 1965 levels (even adjusted for inflation)---or heck, even 1985 prices, A-OK's where the needle is sticking on their "Awesome-meter...

If only there were 1/2 star options, this would be 3.5. Went tonight with roommate to relax after a busy day at work. She'd mentioned the salad bar before and some veggies with little effort sounded like a good dinner option tonight. This place is crazy inside! It's like it stopped in my childhood and never evolved. The decor and even the salad bar itself took me back about twenty years. My food tasted good and it came quickly. Salad bar is loaded with options and some made salads like potato, macaroni, pasta, etc. Love that marinated artichoke hearts were an optional topping. Breadsticks with spaghetti sauce is the other thing we ordered. Let it be known that these things are HUGE! i'm not kidding. Our order (for $3) of five breadsticks came out and looked like there were 5 hot dog buns piled on a tray with a bowl of sauce in the middle. They were good, not amazing and could have used some more seasoning, but HUGE. The bread itself was fresh and chewy, nice consistency. I'll be back again for salad and to try the pizza, not expecting it to become a regular hangout, though.

I love Stark Street Pizza! Been a fan for a long time. It's not fancy, but it's always very, very consistent. I like to get canadian bacon, ground beef and tomato pizza. It's a build-your-own type deal. Keep the tomatoes cold and sliced on the side while the pizza's cooking, please. Slap a slice of tomato on each hot, thin, crispy slice after you've dusted it with parm and some dried chili peppers and you've got a winner! The salad bar's hit and miss. Sometimes it looks like it's right out of a magical nearby garden and sometimes it looks like it's from a bag. Sometimes it's spotless, sometimes it looks as if they've been blowing up M-80's on the counter. I've tended to skip the salad bar recently, sadly. The interior is bizarre. There's the bear. There are the various sports memorabilia which are local. Unless they've fixed it, there's a half-functioning TV in the upper (?) portion of the dining room that will have some barely visible sporting event on display. Taken individually, each of the various aspects of the dining room may some unpleasant. But, in my opinion, the sum of the parts is fairly charming.

I drove past this place for years without ever stopping in, passing it off for a cardboard box establishment. Turns out this place is the ideal pizza parlor, replete with many offerings on delicious thin crust, a robust salad bar, great booths and tables, a couple TVs, several beers on tap plus wine. We ordered a 22" pizza and pitcher of Ninkasi for about $40. We'll definitely be back!

  • Adam C.

Pretty good, thin crust, pizza. The sauce is not the best though. $2.50 micro's on Mondays was pretty awesome, along with "the bear". Definitely a place worth checking out and probably going back to.

  • Valere B.

Love, love, LOVE their thin crust pepperoni pizza. We order ours cooked "extra done" so the crust is crispy and the pepperoni is cooked around the edges crisp and bacon-y. Mmmmm. The place is decorated with all kinds of antiques and there is a huge stuffed (real) bear (?) Hmmmm. Probably a story behind how the bear ended up here. So many unique collectibles though it is probably just one of the owner's finds that he/she stuck there. Good NW beer's on tap to go with that crisp pizza too.

This place is decent. However, for being a supposedly iconic spot in Portland I would have expected more. The pizza, though not exactly the same as your typical Portland pie, was really no better than anywhere else you would go, even a chain pizza parlor. They did not even have good deals on beers, something which most pizza places of this caliber offer. I would go back here IF I was in the area AND craving pizza that I knew wouldnt suck AND wasn't intent on getting a good deal for my food. (The pizzas are really rather small). Anyway, go if you never have, I guess its something you gotta try if you live on the East side.

The pizza and subs are not that special I have had much better other places. I actually like this place for its salad bar. The thing is huge and has tons of choices. The decor is outdated and just plain horrible.

I've been going to SSP since 1980 when my family moved to Portland. The pizza tastes exactly the same now as it did then. No matter where I've lived in SE, Gresham or Troutdale I always get my pizza at SSP. The service is good, staff is friendly & I haven't found a better pizza anywhere I've ever traveled. The price is a bit high, but worth it every time.

I have been a frequent customer of SSP since they opened in 1967 - not because there aren't many, many alternatives, but because having sampled all of them, I usually prefer SSP. For the uninitiated, this is not New York, or California, or Santa Fe, or vegan-style pizza; you want sun-dried tomatoes, peppers and fresh-sliced mushrooms, go to California Pizza Kitchen and live your dream - don't go to a steak house and complain about the spaghetti. SSP's offerings encompass family-style pizza in a family-style surrounding (and why that bear is so disconcerting to everyone is beyond me - you get a chance to have a stuffed grizzly in your place, you take it - simple as that. No statement, no higher meanings) full of antiques, pedal-cars hanging from the ceiling and a healthy serving of local sports pride. There is at least one big-screen TV spouting sports ad-nauseum, and a jukebox with some of the best music on the planet playing just loud enough to enjoy. The service depends upon the size of the crowd at the counter where you order your food and drinks. The drink selection is excellent, representing all of the usual suspects as well as some of the better local micro-brews. The salad bar was recently renovated and is big, cold and, in my experience, fresh. The banquet room is great for groups of 30 or more (at which threshold it's free), and there are video games and an antique player piano for the kiddies. Because it is a family-oriented place, there are quieter places to contemplate the universe, but they don't serve pizza like SSP. The pizza selection is huge and offers the opportunity to design it yourself if you don't see exactly what you want. It will generally cost a bit more, but what doesn't? I swore I would swear off pizza when it cost more than $20, but I have found that impractical. SSP's pizzas are slightly more expensive than their competitors, but they are not competing with Pizza Hut or Domino's - more like Shakey's when Shakey's was at its best.

The crust kicks ass, the salad bar is huge, and the have a fucking grizzly bear in the place! What's not to love! Friendly staff and good prices compared to all the shit artisan pizza places around Pdx! Will return for sure "maybe a little to often".

  • Barb R.

The pizza was ok, but just didn't do it for us. There didn't seem to be much cheese, although plenty of the other toppings we choose. The salad bar needed freshening and wasn't appealing with bits and pieces of ingredients all over. I wouldn't say the decor is 60's or 70's, just lots of older stuff that is looking quite old.

SSP is home for great pizza. I've been going there for 20 years and have never had a bad slice! They have a nice variety of pie options. Or you can create your own. Thin, crispy crust, just the way we like it. Their red sauce is good, but their white sauce is awesome. Nice salad bar, but nothing spectacular. The same options as you see at other pizza joints. They have a variety of sandwiches as well but I have never tried them. When I go there, I want PIZZA. One of the best around. I only wished they delivered. Oh and they have a banquet room for parties and stuff if you find yourself in need of such place.

This is the best pizza ever, by far. The establishment is dark and quirky, with antiques and oddities strewn about, which some people love and others hate. The staff is efficient and usually friendly. Don't bother with anything but the thin crust (though the pan is good, just not superb), and, if you like pepperoni, or pizza, you will never want to go anywhere else EVER again. Our family goes there several times a week, no kidding.

I saw that a previous reviewer referred to this joint as serving New York style pizza. All I have to say in response to that is that she's never had New York pizza. Stark Street reminds me of a Shakey's with admittedly kitchy and entertaining decor. However, I'd much rather eat a Shakey's pizza and I don't much care for them anymore. Stark's functions similarly to Shakey's in that you order your food and drinks at the counter, pick up your drinks and wait for your number to be called so you can pick up your pie. They do offer a salad bar as well. Now you must wonder how I even ended up in a place like this to begin with. A couple of friends and I were staying in a nearby hotel and wanted to check out local restaurants. We asked the girl at the front desk and she gave a glowing recommendation so we thought it sounded like a fairly safe bet. So the first thing that greets us as we walk inside is a giant stuffed bear in a glass case. That absolutely horrified them, though I did secretly enjoy their reactions. I don't care much about that one way or the other. I accept that as something I'd eventually see while being in a historically logging area and northwest in general. We cruise by the salad bar and things did not look good at all - not fresh and definitely not appetizing. So my friends decided to pass on the salad and we ordered a large mushroom to share. When we pick up our pizza and start eating, the first thing I notice is that the crust is so hard that my knife can't quite break through to cut it. The sauce is so so, kinda tasted canned/bottled. Despite the guy behind the register referring to it as fresh mushroom topping, it was not. It looked like the mushrooms you see in a jar of garden style spaghetti sauce. It was all uniformly shaped and definitely had a "manufactured in some way" look. I've cooked with fresh mushrooms countless of times and these did not look it. Overall, this is one place I will not return to.

Ah, the venerable Stark Street Pizza Co. It has probably got one of the coolest interiors of any pizza place I have seen. One thing you will notice is a giant glass case with a taxiderm-ed bear. It is a lot of fun looking around. You order your food and drinks at a counter and find your own seat. Even when it is busy it doesn't seem to hard to sit and the wait for your pizza doesn't seem to ever be very long. The pizza however is not that great. I think it might be the sauce that holds this pie back. There never seems to be enough of it and it isn't that tasty to begin with. I have gone back a number of times because the decor is worth another look but the pizza has impressed any of the three or four times I have gone there.

This is the craving fulfilling pizza you have been looking for. It's not fancy, the ingredients aren't organic, and there are no foodies in sight. This is straight forward pie. Thin cornmeal crust, pepperoni cups (you know the kind that act as grease holders), and the just right amount of crust to sauce, to cheese, to toppings ratio. Are you listening Flying Pie? This non-pretentious pizza is my favorite in town.

As Jimmy Buffett or Richard Buckley would say, "that's when I first saw the bear". Anywhere not trying for old west or hunting lodge decor. a rather large stuffed bear does a bit to set the stage for eclecticality. The rest of the decor pretty much lives up to it, though with some emphasis on sports. The pizza is excellent; I can't think of anywhere I like better, and while I may not have a discerning palate I do taste a lot of pizza. The salad bar is large and I love it. That wasn't a huge problem when I weighed 350 pounds, but post bariatric surgery the salad bar is so tempting that I don't often get much of the pizza I so love. Better for me but not why I go to SSP. I gotta get back up to PDX to visit the ex-laws just to host another get together at Stark Street.

I'm guessing any reviews that are above a star or two are employees, relatives, or people with a childhood attachment to the joint. Two words can sum up the pizza experience here: CANNED MUSHROOMS. Not good pizza.

I was expecting better, although I don't really know why. I really enjoyed the salad bar, but you hardly go to a pizza place for the salad right? The pizza was just okay. Kind of greasy, and a little bland. I've had much better pizza from the freezer section at my grocery store. I don't think I'll ever be going back here.

Great pizza. It is just like the pizza you got as a kid with the corn meal crust. It's my favorite. The one down side is that the pizza is very expensive. Don't get me wrong, I love it, but the cost is prohibitive.

Wow, I've been eating here for years and on June 21st, I think I had 2 of the best pizza's of my life! They were just so cheesy and tons of toppings, excellent! We always get the winterhawk and a peperoni fresh mush and olive family size so we can take some home. Please never change!!

It's not gross, but it's nowhere near my top 10. Slightly below average pizza. I'd go somewhere else whenever possible. Theyre good for big groups, however...so if you have a group of more than 10, they're banquet room is pretty fun.

Love that is a local owner !! Love they take care of theri emplyees and even have christmas parites for them. Love the back room for parties. They don't even charge for it. They have a DVD player that they let you use too. Love the taco pizza!! Say hi to Rick from Me.

Yummy pizza joint in southeast This is a fantastic pizza joint and luckily still a bit of a secret unless you live in this southeast neighborhood. They excel at thin, crispy crust pizza or as more formal eaters refer to it, New York style. The pepperoni is the absolute best I've had and so good that I can't imagine ordering anything else, although they have a dozen other good choices. If you're a vegetarian, you'll love their Garlic Lover's. It's got so many good toppings like sun dried tomatoes and roasted red peppers that we'll sometimes order that and add the pepperoni to it. You definitely have to love garlic, though, because they pile it on! They also have a huge salad bar that takes up a good portion of the restaurant floor with lots of green options if you're looking for a healthy alternative. Tip: Order the Big Bopper Ice Cream Sandwich. It's way better than the ones we had as kids.

This place has the best pizza in Portland. I like the crispy thin crust and the generous toppings. The salad bar is ridiculously long. Pizza costs more than the average chain, but you get much better pizza. To say the decor is busy would be an understatement. There are trinkets and pennants and photos....even a stuffed bear. There's a banquet room you can reserve. I've been there for everything from a work party to a wedding reception.

I wouldn't give this any stars if I could. I saw all the good reviews for this place so I figured I'd try it. Ugh! I didn't even finish the pizza. Overpriced bland cardboard with sauce cheese and toppings. Go to Safeway and get a frozen pizza for half the price and it will taste the same.

Ehhhh.......Not horrible. It has some ups and some downs. I think the last time I was at this place was 28 years ago for a little league pizza fest. Pizza was good, with lots of crushed red pepper and parm, to give it some zing. It looked good, and was hot. I'm not a fan of thin crust (which they have). It feels like you're getting a lot less food. Also, for a thin crust, it could have been larger (I mean WIDER). The staff seem kind of grouchy (I'm talking 4 of them), like they didn't enjoy being there, or serving people, as if to say, "crud...I'm stuck here on a stupid Sunday! Maybe they all just had a big fight amongst themselves before walked in???) Ordered a large 1/2 and 1/2 pizza and 2 rootbears. The total came to just over 25 bucks. I tipped 2 bucks and shortly after wished it was only $1 - due to high price and some turned down mouths..... I like the fact that you seat yourself in a big comfy booth. You picked up your pizza when you see your number on TV monitor. (might have been nice to have it brought out to the table though) We ate until we were (not uncomfortably) stuffed. There was 3 pieces left over and they didn't seem very big. The atmosphere is nice, and not much different than I remember it (does anyone know how long ago this place was PIZZA BARON??) And because it's independent and not a chain with a one-of-a-kind ambiance, I'll give it 3 stars instead of 2. And maybe next time I'll try a sandwich.

I would give this no stars if I could. Terrible, terrible, terrible! Spent $26. on a half/half pizza and got the worst pizza I have ever had. Although I ordered a family it was the size of a medium. Very light on the sauce and toppings. The crust was thin, dry and hard. Driving home I kept smelling a burnt smell. The bottom of the crust wasn't burnt but had black areas on the bottom. In tasting it it was like a frozen pizza. The crust had a burnt taste, as if they do not scrape down the ovens, it was so terrible and what a waste of $26.00!! I am going to call the manager today and see if I can get my money back (I saved the pizza to have him try) or get a decent pizza remade for my money.. I will repost the outcome here, but either way if this is the way they make pizza, don't waste your time or money here. Yes it's been around forever and is a landmark, but when your hungry for pizza and get a pizza like this, it's really disapointing.. . Stay tuned on info on how the manager handled the situation!!

Food of my Youth, Chapter 37. The dark environment and man-killing, thousand pound community benches cause a star to fade away. Not to mention the bear. Makes it a bit difficult to navigate. I'm absolutely certain that my difficulty has nothing to do with the fact that I'm older than dirt. Nope. I think the pizza is pretty good in the old school way. It's a thin, cornmeal crust that comes out pretty crisp. The tomato sauce is effective yet unobtrusive, the cheese is adequate and not too greasy. The meats are lean and not too greasy and the veggies look pretty darn fresh and taste fine to me. This is how every pizza in my little world was when I was young. I think the crust is a little off-putting to some. They seem to find it too dry. As for me, I'm all about the 'cracker crust' or whatever it's called. If you've read this far you've been warned. They have what I think is a pretty decent salad bar. It all looked good and tasted fine to me. Aside from specialty places, it seems like pizza joints are the only place you can find salad bars any more. It's not cheap. Nothing is any more and IMO, there's nothing more god-awful than cheap pizza. There's enough games, kitsch on the walls and whatnot to keep the young ones occupied for awhile. Mind the bear and you'll be fine.

Been our favorite place for years, tell our last 2 visits. We drive all way across town to have BURNT pizza. Took back up said this burnt, they said what do you want me to do . For the price I said I want a new one we are hungry. Today, pizza was fine, but ordered a 7$ pitcher of soda. It was flat. After waiting 10 mins for someone to ask what I needed I explained it was flat can I have something else, I chose coke. IT WAS FLAT ALSO. MEANS THE CO2 IS OUT! Went up again told another worker, he said well we are busy and it will be awhile. WE NEVER DID GET OUR SODA, OR MONEY BACK... NOT EVEN A APOLOGY. This will be the last night we drive 30 mins to burnt pizza and the worst customer service, sad I grew up going there my dad even worked there as a kid. I now take my children there, tell today we will never go back.

I loved this place so much until my experience today. I gave this place a 5 star rating years ago. Over the past 15 years my family has come to this establishment numerous times spending thousands of dollars. This was a place that I was more than excited to have additional family come in from all over the state to celebrate my daughters first birthday. After putting in a reservation last Tuesday with a name and phone number for 20 guests everything was set! When we showed up this afternoon we noticed a sign on the door stating that the power was out so the establishment was closed. With all of our family arriving we had to end up driving up last second to Vancouver to a local family members house. I understand completely that power loss is beyond the establishments control but my problem happened when I called to ask why no one bothered to call us to let us know that the establishment was not going to be open since we had TWENTY people showing up from hours away and we gave the business our phone number and name to hold the reservation. The manager that I talked to just kept saying we are sorry the power loss was beyond our control. My problem was never about the power loss which I explained. My problem was that no one bothered to let us know. The manager then told me there was no reservation for me, and then he kept acting as if I was making the accusation up. The final straw was when the manager hung up on me. You should never treat your customers like this, especially as a manager. Well losing my business in the future may not hurt your business at all, but maybe others that are thinking about reserving a party will think twice.

We have been going to Stark Street pizza for years. There is no comparison to the taste. Except maybe Pietro's Pizza...yummy!! I love the decor, vintage toys and signs. great for families or parties. I have had several birthday parties here for my kids as well as a baby shower. Anyone who doesn't love this pizza is totally missing out and I have to question your mental state.

Pizza

Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.

Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza is also the most preferred food whenever a group of friends is hanging out together. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.

Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. Whether you prefer thin or thick crust pizza, you can find a pizza of your preference at the best pizza restaurants in your city.
