Best Barbecue I have had in Portland. This place will punch every flavor button you have! Burnt ends brisket was delicious and the coleslaw was probably the best I have ever had! The pig ear cracklings were also fantastic! I will be back with my family because I know my kids will tear it up! Literally fantastic food! Thank you

I'm stunned at the reviews of this place.. The wedge salad was not crisp. You can tell they cut it a long time ago as you can see browning on the edges. It's a shame because the rest of the ingredients seemed fine. That's just lazy.. Can't cut a cabbage when somebody orders it? A wedge salad takes minimal time to make already.. Brisket was dry and looked like it too... I was a bit shocked they even served it. It was obvious it has been sitting for awhile.. You can see "dry hairs" on the meat from sitting under a hot light. What's worse is that every single piece of brisket looked like that which means it was PRE-SLICED and sitting for hours. Seriously.. That's again.. Lazy! Sausage was OK. Not great. Chicken was the only thing that tasted "fresh". Beans tasted like they were pre-made in their little dishes and reheated when ordered. If you're going to cut corners at least stir it before serving.. Potato salad.. I was wary in even eating it. Their obvious lack in fresh food made me unsure. I didn't want to get sick. I'm aware it's tough to open a BBQ place. It's tough to estimate inventory. But guess what... You chose one of the hardest genre's of food to make as a restaurant as your main dishes take hours and hours to make. Not an excuse to be lazy and serve garbage cause you hate throwing away your old inventory. Stop. Serve fresh food. Gain returning customers. It will then be easier to estimate inventory with minimal loss. Good luck but never again am I coming back. Ever. Edit: so I've gotten messages about my review... Maybe it was an off night but my review is honest. I don't review unless it made an impression which isn't often. This is my first bad review.

I've visited the Smokehouse several times now, and have always left impressed. The first thing you'll notice is, there isn't much of a struggle for parking compared to most establishments in the area. Because they have the very rare commodity called a parking lot. The staff is always welcoming and helpful with menu ideas. Which is nice, even though it seems to be difficult to make a wrong choice. Everything I've tried has been stellar. If you really want to make your tastebuds dizzy go for brunch and try the Brisket Benedict. It is amazing! Honestly anything that says Brisket there has impressed. They have a fine drink selection as well. But on these scorching days of summer I'm very happy they serve Stiegle Radler.

Absolutely the best consistently amazing BBQ I've had in 4 years here. The only issue is that they sometimes run out of the burnt brisket ends before I get here.

I have been going to this restaurant since it opened and let me tell you, this place is AMAZING!!!! I love the brunch menu here and the service. The pork rinds, even though this may not seem like a brunch item, but I always start with them as a first course. They melt in your mouth, and the honey and sauce they give you along side of the dish make it even more mouth watering. Do not pass up the brisket Benedict and the brisket hash. Dear lord I want to eat here every single day of my life and not gain 100 lbs. A must eat!!!!

Fuck yeah! I've had a love/hate thing going on with Smokehouse 21 for years now. I love it, but I hate how far away from it I live. Now this bastion of BBQ exists on my side of that infernal Willamette River (the one I so rarely dare to cross) and I can get my meat fix as often as I want. Now I don't have to battle for a parking spot to shove meat into my face in an uncontrollable manner. And on top of the convenience of location, this spot is way bigger than the cubby-hole that is 21. Smokehouse Tavern offers an awesome selection of delicious bar-b-queued meats in either sandwich or plated format. Plates come with two sides, ranging from mac n cheese to collared greens. All of which are good. The meats include brisket, burnt ends, chicken, ribs, pulled pork and various other things. The chicken is my jam. Half a bird seasoned with a nice rub and smoked up good. For sides, my faves are the collared greens and coleslaw. Top said chicken with the hot or mustard sauces, and, well, I'm in heaven. I'm so glad BJ has honored the better side of the river with his tasty-ass 'que. I'll be back, and often. Oh, and there are cocktails, but I have yet to try. And this joint serves weekend brunch, which I also have yet to try. But I will. Mark my words.

Holy cow! And pig! And of course chicken! Those deviled eggs are purely Satan's work...my 13 year old son ordered 4, and then asked for two more for dessert! My 10 year old loves this place so much...he gave the waitress an extra tip with his own money. As for me, I have never figured out why Wedge salad is such a big deal (not a fan of iceberg lettuce), but here they use butter lettuce (with plenty of green), perfect light dressing, and those bacon bits are pure pork heaven. Our new favorite place! We will be back soon!

Tavern is just as delicious as Smokehouse 21, except waaaaay bigger. Bring the whole fucking family for some yummy barbecue, and don't be afraid of the jalapenos, they aren't too spicy, even for tame PNW palates. I checked the place out last week, and besides it being a well-designed, beautiful space to enjoy the A/C, the staff was attentive and friendly, and well-humored. Jason the bartender made me a good mocktail, and I stuffed myself on deviled eggs, wedge salad, jalapenos, steelhead, and a ton of other things, until I was unbuttoning my pants and wishing that I could take them off. I'll be back!

The church of smoked meats in PDX has opened a spot on the eastside. Let us rejoice. About me: I live in NW. I should be perfectly satisfied stuffing my face with burned brisket ends in close proximity to my place--but we ALL know how frustrating it is to find parking in the Alphabet district. That said--I'll happily drive to SE Morrison for the good eats. WHAT WE SCARFED (in order): hot link devilled eggs (the absolute highlight of the meal, even above the famed brisket), smoked oyster shooters, pulled pork poutine, and the brisket plate with collards and potato salad. LOCATION STANDOUTS: the space is warm, inviting, and 3x as big. Parking is ample. Apparently they do brunch on the weekends, which will require a whole new review once I make it. STAR OF THE MEAL: those devilled eggs. Holy shit. Who knew a classic appetizer our grandmas were fond of making, could be transformed into something smoky and creamy? I'd like 5, please. For myself. Round of applause for the brave move to the eastside, Smokehouse. Your faithful patrons thank you.

Good (not great) artisan BBQ, Portland-style. Ate dinner at 5:45 (yeah, getting old) and they were out of the spareribs or they weren't ready yet. On a Friday night? Oy. We opted for the smoked steelhead instead and it was buttery and delicious. The brisket was tasty (not chewy) but a little dry. The sides were the highlight of the meal: a flavorful, chunky potato salad, good mac n cheese, great greens. The squeeze bottle sauces were all decent enough but the hot lacked kick. For the price (pretty cheap, actually) I would go back and try and few other dishes for the hell of it (the ribs for sure). But like Southland Whiskey Bar the food at Smokehouse is solid but lacks a certain something---it's just not distinctive in anyway. Nothing grabbed me. One last thing: the booth seating is pretty uncomfortable, as you sink and tilt back. Who designed those things? Grab a chair if you can!

If any douche bags ruin this place for me I will be very very upset. This is Texas barbeque with Portland sophistication. Get the burnt ends, but not on a night that I'm coming in lest they run out. The steelhead sandwich is ON POINT. Their deviled eggs reinvented the wheel. Brunch = put an egg on their greatest hits ... what more could you want? The greens are gold. Mac and cheese, tater salad, cole slaw collect all the sides! Service is awesome. Not gonna lie, I am developing an unhealthy obsession with Smokehouse Tavern. If any douce bags ruin this place for me I will be very very upset.

**This is just 4 stars because I haven't had lunch or dinner yet...if as good as brunch I will change to 5 stars** Let me start off by saying I am not really a brunch or breakfast person...I just like the day drinking. Went here for brunch a couple weeks ago and had the best time. We arrived shortly after they had opened on a Saturday and surprisingly, no line out the door, and were warmly welcomed. Ordered a cocktail (little Honda - Tequila drink with lime and cucumber) and decided on the brisket benedict. If licking the plate wasn't faux pas, I would have done it...maybe I did anyway. I can't wait to come back and try dinner!

I originally came here because I wanted to try the chicken skins, which to my disappointment were recently taken off of the menu. The main seating area has tables which are very close together, which isn't usually a problem unless you happen to sit next to two of the most pretentious, self-indulgent, pseudo-intellectual men in Portland, which unfortunately was the case when I ate there. I had the chicken, brisket, and burnt ends, which took about forty-five minutes to arrive, which, again, wouldn't have been so bad if I didn't have to listen to these two guys talk about the deep tragedy of the majority of Americans not being as good at math as they are. The claustrophobia started to seep in at around 20 minutes. The chicken was the worst aspect of the meal. It was dry, and poorly flavored/seasoned. The only way I could describe the taste was "farty." The brisket was just ok, and the burnt ends were another disappointment. I ordered fries and vegetables with my meal and the fries had a similarly off-putting seasoning/taste. The service was not the best, and the only part of the experience I truly enjoyed was the nineties hip-hop that was playing, which was probably the least favorite aspect for the majority white crowd in there.

I was very disappointed with my birthday dinner here! Especially after being to their NW 21st location about a year ago. I had pork ribs, pork cheeks and burnt ends. They were all covered under the same very SWEET sauce, so much that I almost couldn't tell what is what, I might have as well had oven roasted tofu with the same sweet sauce on and I would have had the SAME overall taste and enjoyment. I expected so much from this place based on the Yelp reviews and what I experienced 1+ years ago at NW 21st location. I might as well have gotten BBQ sauce from Trader Joe's and baked tofu in the oven , and I'd have 95+% of the overall satisfaction for 1 / 20th of the $$$ we spent there. Our service was pretty good (~7pm Friday night) . The side mac and cheese was tasty, braised greens and pickled veggies had again too much sugar in them though! In summary, most of the stuff I had here were so overly sweet that I didn't need a birthday cake after the meal! Sorry, too much sweetness without any outstanding underlying flavor is an EPIC failure me for the money and hype of this location. But the service was OK, no complaints about that (our waitress had denim overalls to make clear that whom I'm talking about ... And kudos to her for doing a great job) !

This was pretty mediocre BBQ dressed up in a space that is trying really hard to look like Teddy Roosevelt's den. Could do without the mounted heads and the server's boxers in my face- pull'em up, dude. Nothing traditional here, for starters there is no bbq aroma to be detected ANYWHERE in the area or dining room. A very hipster looking crowd-sloooow service as servers chatted with each other at the bar. Loooong wait for a deviled egg appetizer. Despite 4 sauces on the table, the brisket was slathered in sauce and tough enough to need a knife. Same for the ribs, which were tough on the outside and undercooked near the bone as if they'd been rushed along for service. Greens were good but beans and mac & cheese were dry dry dry. The whole experience was so uneven it's hard to believe they're an offshoot of another place. Not even close to the best 'que in town, and a long way from Texas.

A barbecue place that is going for the higher end. Unlike any BBQ place I've been to in Texas, Alabama, Louisiana, Georgia, North Carolina, or Tennessee, Smokehouse Tavern is kind of upscale. Better ingredients, nice building and decor, and good service give it a nice feel, but it has a slightly weird, slightly pretentious undercurrent. Prices reflect all of this. Food was very good. I haven't been to Smokehouse 21 to compare the two, but the Tavern is worth visiting

Great Meal, we tried a little bit of everything, our waitress was really helpful and knowledgeable, we had a great time, everything was good. Brisket, ribs, pork cheeks and Poutine.... the drink selection was good and loved the new Tavern.

Still some of the best BBQ in town. Smokehouse 21 in my opinion is still better but a close in east side option is never a bad idea. The deviled egg at $1.50 seems steep at first but if you put it all in perspective it's a steal.

I keep seeing the pic of the deviled egg with sausage and wished I ordered it, dammit. My hubs and I shared a wedge salad and mixed plate (3 meats & 2 sides). I ordered the wedge salad with bacon ($2). We were not impressed with the amount of bacon that was sprinkled on top but the salad was nice and refreshing. We got pulled pork, chicken and brisket burnt ends. Out of the meats, my fave was the chicken. It was fall off the bone good. My favorite thing however was the greens. I could have eaten 3 bowls of it. Smokey and so flavorful - delicious. We also got the mac and cheese which I didn't like - not creamy, too dry and a bit grainy. I wasn't a fan of the bench seating against the wall - the bench is tilted higher in the front. Felt like I was sitting in a rocket seat. Overall, an a-ok dining experience. Food was pretty good, service was decent.

That was probably one of the best deviled eggs I ever had! I came here one afternoon with my girlfriend. Started off with some very tasty deviled eggs. Totally worth the price. Make sure to get at least 2 a piece because you'll be fighting for them. Wedge salad was also tasty and fresh . My girlfriend had the brisket which was perfectly delicious. The coleslaw was a nice crisp compliment to the smokey brisket. I had the pulled pork sandwich on Kens bread which made it nice and crunchy. We tried the Yo Mamma's Apple Pie cocktail which was great and I had a local beer. Overall Smokehouse was super homey and comfortable place to eat. Loved the beer coozys! Will hit next time in the mood for some BBQ.

The ribs were the only thing that was good. The brisket was disappointing. So was the mac & cheese and the potato salad. I'm not a fan of the poutine.

Although the meats were incredible, I have to say what made it for me were the appetizers! They were unique and delicious! The service was wonderful and the price was reasonable. I loved everything about this place. I will be back time and time again!

Good food, good service, friendly staff, funky/fun décor, good selection and decent prices. Best BBQ in Portland by far. I had the Brisket Benedict and my husband had the brisket burnt ends with greens and potato salad, everything was spot on! Two thumbs up for parking lot!

Some of the best ribs I've ever tried. A must get appetizer is their deviled eggs. And it you are a hard boiled egg fan, you get a pickled half with their blood Mary's. It was delicious!

Amazing brunch spot!!! Brisket eggs Benedict was to die for. Bread on the bottom, topped with tender juicy brisket, collard green cooked with bacon, and poached eggs, and then finished off with smoked hollandaise sauce. Amazing. Great service too. This place is going to be packed with a long line in no time.

Quite possibly the worst food service in Portland. And that stinks because I just moved to the neighborhood and would love to be able to recommend some great places here! I wish I could give them a decent review for the brisket because it was very good however the horrible and ridiculously slow service cancelled out everything having to do with the food. Everything. First we had to deal with an indignant male server (maybe the owner, no idea) asking us in a condescending tone "did you check in inside??". And then we had to deal with him begrudgingly taking our drink order, and then bringing our drink order... like he was doing us a favor. After our drinks it took another 20 mins for our female (VERY NICE and I feel bad she has to deal with this) server to take our food order and then another near 40 minutes to deliver it to our table. Its like they're running a contest to see how long you'll sit there before you complain and then VOILA! there's your cold food coming to your table. Dear dude who owns this place.. is the brisket cooked to order? NO? Slice it and bring it to the table already! Serously, sliced brisket x 2 orders and one chicken breast with mac n cheese. 40 minutes WTH? No one likes smug and pretentious when they're spending money and I realize you have another restaurant with decent reviews but come on... care a little.

If you're a fan of Smokehouse 21, you're going to love the eastside Smokehouse Tavern. It has parking and a lot more space inside, including a full bar with excellent cocktails. You can't go wrong with deviled egg w/spicy sausage, pulled pork, spareribs, brisket, smoked chicken, collards, and mac & cheese. Podnah's has some competition on the eastside now.

We waited for almost an hour to be seated because we were a party of 7. Other parties of 2 walked right in and sat down. It's a small restaurant that doesn't really have the space to accommodate parties of more than 2-4. That being said, the food was worth the wait! The staff was very friendly too once we were seated. Everything was delicious; from the molasses corn bread, to the poutine fries, the burnt brisket ends, ribs....everything! Will definitely be back! Excited to have good BBQ in Portland.

This place needs some work. BBQ is good, service is bad, and sides are OK. Food: The BBQ was spot on, A for the BBQ. We tried the spareribs and brisket, very nice and top notch stuff. Comparable to Portland's other BBQ spots. My only gripe might be the cost of the sparerib plate, $19. I am a big eater and struggled to finish the portion, maybe cut the price and the amount of ribs down. We had: fries, mac-n-cheese, greens, and potato salad. All were pretty good, nothing amazing, a solid B. Service: Terrible, a D. We sat at the bar on a semi-busy Sunday evening and received just terrible and indifferent service. This is the kind of service you would get in Portland maybe 10 years ago. I typically enjoy sitting at the bar to get food and drinks faster and watch the action. Totally disappointed here. We just wanted a light app, so we asked the bartender if the deviled egg came with one or two portions, to which he replied "two, its an egg." Well it came out and it is one half of an egg. If you list something as an "egg" on a menu, no one expects to get one half of an egg, especially for $1.50. The pictures of the sausage on top posted by other reviewers are deceptive, its a dinky little one bite piece of meat. My other gripe with the service was the pacing. After our app, it too nearly 45 minutes for them to plate our two BBQ plates. I was about ready to leave when the server unapologetically dropped off our dinner. I was watching the kitchen, they were lazily serving up the food like they were working in a michellin starred restaurant. I didn't see any foams, tweezers, liquids suspended in liquid nitrogen, etc...though. Guys its fucking BBQ. Its all cooked already and so are 90% of your sides. Bottom line: This place could be good but the service and the kitchen's pacing needs some serious work. The sides are fine, nothing amazing. I enjoy the sides more at Podnahs, then again they have had some time work refine their offerings.

Great spot for really nice BBQ Big fan of Smokehouse 21 and super happy to see them in a larger location. It was warm and friendly. Great service, nice cocktails, nice simple menu with everything you would expect from exceptional bbq house. We had the deviled eggs with smoky and spicy sausage, nice way to start, on to a wedge salad, simple but it always shocks me how people can mess it up. NOT the case here! the iceberg was super cold, the bacon crispy and the dressing was great topped off with some great pickled onions, yum. We shared a half order of ribs, mac and cheese to die for and some incredible`coleslaw. Oh yea a cornbread muffin that was de-lish. The restaurant was comfortable, stylish, and ran like it had been opened for years, not 5 days. It is now our new go-to spot for bbq in Portland. Totally worth a try.

So all in all our meal and service weren't the worst ever but definitely disappointed with my first visit. When we arrived we stood at the door for about 10 minutes before we were greeted. Then a guy greeted us, we told us to wait a few minutes because a table was paying their check. I asked if we could sit outside and was told no because they were short handed, even though there were lots of open tables. We waited for about 10 minutes then we were seated by the same guy and he was apologetic about the wait. We sat by the front door. Within 15 minutes of us sitting down we had watched them sit 4 tables outside by the same guy, I believe he was the manager. The food was just ok. The Mac and cheese and slaw were good. The corn bread was definitely the best thing we had. The meat was the big let down. We got a 3 choice plate...pulled pork, pork cheeks, and burnt ends. The pulled pork was ok. The pork cheeks were very dry and over smoked. The burnt ends were pretty tasty but they were different then any other ends I've ever had. Not sure if they were true burnt ends or not, they kind of looked like chunks of brisket that had been cut before smoking. I was going to give a less score but the two servers were nice and were working their asses off. So not sure if I will return. I'll have to try some other BBQ spots before I do.

Multiple visits, multiple tries. It's pretty good but service is kind of slow. Sometimes here's a feeling of desperation in the air, and I usually don't feel so great after eating here. In a town where you can find much better BBQ options, I'd pass on Smokehouse and head over to Podnah's or Russell St. The breakfast options have proven better than the dinners.

Ah, I knew this place would be good after parking and getting out of my car! The smell of barbeque filled the air! I have to give props for a handful of items: Off street parking; Location on the east side of the river; and an immediate greeting and direction upon walking in the door! There is seating both inside and out, and the waitress was very enthusiastic about the bartender's abilities. That said, my friend and I ordered a sweet tea and a lemonade (both house made) and finally I asked my friend if he even recalled ordering a drink (due to the time it took to be delivered). I was going to admonish the support staff in the small-ish restaurant for not helping out their co-worker and simply delivering her drinks - but honestly, I'm thinking she never ordered them. After about 15 mins. she came by our table and told us our drinks were on the way - implying that the bar was backed up (which is was not w/2 people behind it) and once she got there, the boys were Johnny on the Spot and our drinks finally produced. Not long after, my amazing brisket, and 2 sides - mac & cheese and potato salad arrived and were quickly gobbled up! My partners ribs did not appear to be falling off the bone, but he didn't really complain. I tried his greens and think that all sides were very delicious! The food and store deserve a higher rating, but poor service can ruin an entire meal for me.

The inside is pretty nice, I love the decor, I love the fact that you have different options in the menu for you meat. However, coming from the South, BBQ is not the best I've tried... It was good but a little disappointing for a BBQ place. Waitress was at first very friendly and nice, then... she kind of disappeared, we didn't even have forks and knives, we had to pick some on another table, she just show up to bring the check and take things away from the table (bottle of water and bbq sauce bottles), because they were probably closing and we were part of the last table left... You can nicely say that the restaurant is going to close soon instead of making the customer uncomfortable by taking everything away... Not sure we will come back which is sad because I really wanted to love the place when I first came in.

Where should I start... I was real excited to see a Smokehouse East location, but after my arrival I was severely disappointed as there was no lunch menu and it was priced for dinner and since we were the only ones eating lunch it would behoove the proprietor to at least get a cheaper lunch menu to drive a lunch crowd or go to dinner only. I ordered the pulled pork sammich and it was good but not great I would say it's comparable to every other BBQ pulled pork sammy in town but just a little more expensive than everyone else. The sauces were terrible at best... The original tasted like peppered ketchup and the hot tasted like peppered ketchup with a slight hint of cayenne. The sides... I ordered the corn bread and it was ok, it was hot and fresh from the oven but the pesky cooking paper cup stuck to the muffin and was difficult to remove as it was slathered in a maple syrup concoction and the chunks of bacon were a bit much and may a little too much going on. The Mac and cheese was a little bland and it needed a little something like a smoked Gouda and again the bacon bits were a bit much. Simplify your recipes, change your sauces and get a good reasonable lunch menu and you'll pack it in daily. The down and dirty is this won't make my regular rotation with people's pig and Russell street around. Good luck!

We were looking forward to trying the new location but were very disappointed. At 5:30 on a Wednesday the server seemed distracted and not happy. Beer selection was weak and limited. We ordered the burnt ends, ribs and sides. The burnt ends were 90% fat and the ribs were ok. Slaw, beans and deviled eggs were good but not remarkable. Too much great BBQ in this town to go back.

at 6:15 p.m. on Saturday, they were out of brisket and pulled pork. They said they ran out because lunch was busy. Really? Service was lousy. We waited way too long for our drinks, which just sat on the bar until another server brought them over. Our server never asked if we wanted another drink and was generally unfriendly. Not sure I'll go back, and I won't recommend the place.

Food was decent, service was horrible. A few of us had been wanting to try the "new" east side location so stopped in last night after work. We started with beers and a corn bread muffin. The waitress comes back and tells us that they are out of the beer two of us had ordered, okay fine, so they pick a different beer. In the meanwhile we order food and still the others drinks don't come. We finally ask as we get our food and she brings them, 15 mins later. When the food comes, all but one persons food comes. They say his is on the way. We try to do the polite thing and wait but he insists we eat. They first bring him his sides then say his brisket is on its way so we all start to eat. We are all but finished once we realize he has still yet to get his brisket. Our server had not checked on us once so I walk up to the counter to inquire about his brisket. The server just replied, "sorry, we just want to make sure his meal is of the same quality so we don't want to rush it." Wtf? We all ordered at the same time, where is it okay to not serve everyone at the same time? Anyways they bring out the rest of his dinner as we all are asking for to go boxes. Thankfully he's a bachelor and took it home with him for later. Overall food was good but jeez Louise did we have some bad luck or bad service or both. Probably won't go back, there's just as nice at reverends or podnahs and better service.

Loved the food! Finally, great barbecue closer to home. We'd love to bring more of the family, particularly our school age granddaughters, but the music included language like "mother fucker" and "nigger." The site says, Yes, to kids, but I'm glad ours weren't with us.

Been a fan of Smokehouse 21 for years and their new venture has taken a small neighborhood gem and turned it into a bigger neighborhood gem. They have worked hard on the interior ambiance building it out almost all by hand and the love and attention shows. It's a fun and interesting place but warm and inviting at the same time. The food was as good as always. Delicious cornbread, Mac and cheese, and slaw and of course the tender and meaty ribs. My husbands favorite was the wedge salad. A nice generous helping of crisp iceberg, delicious blue cheese dressing and great smokey bacon bits. Our servers were attentive and seemed very happy to be working there. There was a great energy to the place and although they have only been open 5 days, you would never have know it. Everything came at a great pace, hot and delicious. Large outdoor patio area will be open for summer dining soon. It didn't hurt that we had a Michelle Lesniak sighting too!! Highly recommend visiting this fun addition to Portland dining.
