Heck yeah I'll go five stars for this joint! I had me a great good time at Scandals on a Saturday night. The drinks were strong and cheap, just like the men. J/k Miss Thing. Seriously, plenty of good times to be had. I like that there are many levels for standing, perching, sitting, watching. The openness of the space was quite nice and they still manage to keep it dark and scandalous. The bartenders were "focused" but I can see how some might construe that as being rude. But whatever - drinks come fast when you are concentrating on the job instead of hitting on the patrons. At least they had some pep in their step. I very much enjoyed my time here and can't wait to come back again!

They have good beer on tap. Go with a group. I was there as a tourist so I didn't know people. The locals are all kinda involved with each other, of course, I can't really imagine any other situation being the case. The karaoke hostess will do work to fit you in if you're a late night arrival on, I think that was Tuesday? So if you're into the brand of public humiliation we call karaoke you will probably be accommodated! The actual room is set up more to sit than mingle. Like I said, you probably won't have met anyone by closing time that you didn't know when you walked in, so bring company with you or be prepared to spend your time with Jose (Cuervo) and Jim (Beam).

This place was Fun. We were there for the drag contest which was fun but I am in agreement that if you're not a gay male you're basically invisible. The people I actually came into contact with were pretty nice though and the drinks were strong. This place was great for people watching and I felt pretty safe there (which I guess as a straight female is not hard) but overall we enjoyed our time there.

Had some really great drinks here the other day. They gave us nice big pint glasses but did not over charge! Our drinks were made with care and the bartenders are very friendly and skilled. Honestly don't waste your money on any other bars downtown.

We sat outside during a Portland heat wave as we had a dog with us. It was fun people watching and we ended up chatting with some fun people. Really nice place.

Sweet bartenders, strong drinks, good vibes. Scandals is where my friends took me to have some drinks before dinner. It was a nice place to do so as the clientele seems to be in great spirits and it just really seemed like a good place to hang out at. I did not realize initially that this was a gay bar until my friend told me so as there is a good mix of different genders all having fun. This is a good place to go for drinks.

We stopped in here on a Wednesday afternoon to celebrate a friend's new job. We considered sitting outside but as the sun was still out, it was a hot day and most of the outdoor seating was taken up we decided on inside. And I'm sure glad we did because the ac felt absolutely amazing! There was a fairly mellow crowd in the bar and remixed top 40 hits played gently in the air so we were able to have conversation. Like I said, we were here fairly early in the day so I'm not really sure what the night scene is like. However I did notice a sign that showed all of their promotions so it looks like something fun is going on every night here. On Wednesdays they have a deal on craft brews from 9 pm til midnight. They had a good variety of boozes and brews and fantastic prices. I bought 3 drinks and the tab was only $10. The bartenders were attentive and quick. I like that you can open your tab but they give your card back after its swiped so you won't be able to forget it at the bar after a long night of drinks. There were a few video poker machines, a pool table and a dart board for games. The woman's restroom was very private with a locking door. The men's had no official looking door (I actually almost walked right in without realizing) but the urinals were out of sight. All in all, this place was fun, affordable and had a pleasant vibe.

Guys and girls type gayberhood bar. Great for early drinks. Not too busy in the afternoon but still fun.

If you are only looking for a good drink, decent music and a good mix of people, this may be the bar for you. However be forewarned as the bartenders are friendly and efficient but completely detached unless you have established yourself as a regular. Unfortunately this is pretty typical of Portland bartenders and bars in general and is certainly not specific to Scandals. Don't assume that the friendliness may lead to introductions and small talk. It won't. They just aren't interested.

Pretty cool spot not bad was semi pleasantly surprised too bad my Partner and I went to that seafood place for dinner (across the street before hand) otherwise would of enjoyed more drinks. Well we were in Portland for a short time just Friday evening and Saturday morning and my partner (being from Portland) wanted to try some local bar places. Found this place on yelp and glad I did. Overall pretty cool. We were staying at the Crystal across the street so yea did not have to worry abuout buzzed driving lol. Had a russian mule, I think, And my partner ordered for us and noticed semi bald bartneder guy was not too friendly. My partner tried being friendly and making small talk and he responded in a well semi bitteraly way. Perhaps he could tell we were from LA or something idk. Did not let that bother me too much because with our fast paced schedule it was like whatever ok bit%#. But yea not counting that pretty cool place and yea semi cheap and stuff so worth checking out before going clubbing and dancing. If I were a local I think I would be here pretty often... Did not care for that jealous bitter bartender but whatever he's just a worker bee.

I always have a great time when I come here. Staff are so freaking sweet! Now, I have been here when I've met a lot of sexy lesbians and I've been here when there isn't a dyke to been seen. So, I am a femme lesbian and to sometimes complicate things, my partner is a very passable Transman. So we have been given the cold shoulder at other gay bars but scandals is seriously, DRINK AND BE GAY! Which is all we want, is to be treated with respect and enjoy chatting with other people who are more accepting of our lifestyle. I recommend it to all my gay friends and I take my gay out town guests here also. It's the closest vibe to a traditional Castro Bar, which is btw, where I am originally from. I love how it gives me the comfort of San Francisco and Portland :) my new home and my old home.

Review from a "straight business guy": LOL!! I'm so clueless sometimes.... I was staying at the hotel across the street (Mark Spencer) on business. Got checked in at 5:30 and headed out for a beer and dinner and such. Not knowing the neighborhood all that well, I stumbled upon Scandals around the corner. Just saw neon beer signs in the windows.... paid no other particular attention. I went inside... Wow! VERY cozy! not loud (at 6:00 PM), not many people. So I thought "Cool! What a nice little neighborhood bar!" The bartender was VERY nice - the decor cozy and inviting.... texted my wife that I found a nice little bar right by the hotel and such. Then started noticing the posters of half-naked guys on the walls... LOL!! My first time in a gay bar! But it was AWESOME!!! Terrific prices, great service, friendly customers, cozy on a pouring rainy night.... I ended up staying quite a long time. I even came back after dinner at Jakes (kitty corner from Scandals) to close out my night. Yeah, my first time in a "gay bar" but I never once felt unwelcome in any way shape or form. I'd have zero issue with coming back (plan on it, actually!). Don't let the tag line moniker of "gay bar" turn you off if you're not gay - ain't NO ONE here going to care if you come in for a reasonably priced drink to check your email and chill for an hour or two but aren't in the market to pick up dudes... please don't be afraid to try this bar just for the coolness and coziness of it just cuz it's a "gay bar". Very nice place! I will be back. Dave

Don't get me wrong Scandals is NOT a horrible place, but I question their loyalty to their customers, as well as creating a safe, fun, supportive and unique atmosphere for their guests to enjoy. I am a concierge at a hotel....I wouldnt send a valuable guest or client to this bar after the way I was, as well as my friends were treated. Reach out to me if you have questions and I would be happy to help. I have TONS of suggestions for other LGBTQ bars in the PDX area! We would be happy to help, as well as suggest bars that are also supportive of the LGBTQ cause! Cheers, and be well! Cody H

I enjoyed a Tuesday evening of "Ton Def" Karaoke. The bar is just the right size for those singing and those who aren't to be there at the same time and not annoy each other. There were a wide variety of talents on display - not all equally tuneful, but equally entertaining! The bartenders were quick, personable and professional. The KJ was fun and kept the evening moving.

Dear Scandals. To put it succinctly: You suck. Let me count the ways and I'll be brief about it. Essentially, the only customers you care about are gay men. I understand you are a "Gay Bar." I'm not an idiot. I don't have a problem with the fact that you market to a certain clientele. That does not bug me. What does bug me is that you can't seem to fucking multi-task and that means that you welcome everybody and treat everybody with respect. You have heard the saying: treat others the way you want to be treated? Don't make me use the "Duh" word here. It was New Year's Eve, Scandals. You purposely made our Barfly group wait outside in the cold during the countdown. You didn't have to play the asshole card, but you did. Do you think you made a good impression on folks that likely haven't been to your bar before? I know, I know, you don't care. I know that you don't care about my opinion as a straight woman, or even as a fellow human being. New Year's Eve is not the first time I have been to Scandals and have felt slighted. I am just here today to rant. Happy New Year Scandals. Do try and make 2014 the year that you treat all your customers with the same respect that you demand. Air Kiss Kiss 2014 - Review # 5

After living in Portland for three years, it's worth noting one of the still-standing gay bars in the city. I adore the fact that Portland is the type of city where LGBT clientele can feel comfortable anywhere they go, but it is nice to have a venue that is primarily dedicated to our community. When I first came to the city, I thought "Oh, this is gay Cheers! Everyone comes and it's laid back and happy." That has since changed. This is my third visit in a row (over a course of around 3 months) where the atmosphere is so toxic and slightly trashy that I've quickly departed. Aside from the fact that the general space really needs an update (and I love dive bars, but Scandals is caught somewhere in limbo).... The staff has been generally rude. Today's most recent visit was absolutely delightful. Upon entering, I ordered a margarita (85 degree day and I was told he made them nicely). I got an eye roll. (I'm very sorry to make you do your job) After enjoying those for a few moments, the bartender began a screaming match with a long-term client of the bar. Not one of those situations where the patron deserved to be kicked out, but an absolute embarrassing moment for the staff and owner of the bar in which the bartender yelled profusely, at the top of his lungs, for approximately 5 minutes. He slammed glasses and doors and I'm surprised he didn't break anything or scare anyone away. I was embarrassed for him. Prior to that, my experience was with another bartender (who's always incredibly unfriendly) yelling at more clientele. In the bartender's defense, this very drunk group should have been made to leave the premises. However... still unprofessional behavior. I'm not sure why I've bothered giving them additional chances recently, but it's likely I won't give them another. Part of me is sad to say they may be the last leg standing of what (I hear) was once Portland's gay district.

My neighborhood gay bar. Love The bartenders Michael and Davey. Strong drinks and a fun vibe. The new 2am closing time sucks, though.

  • Troy D.

Scandals is a chill gay bar that is devoid of the drama one might find at a more club-like establishment. I like to hang out there if I'm wanting a quieter space to socialize, etc. The bartenders are great there and pour good drinks.

  • Mark S.

I haven't been here for quite sometime and was pleasantly surprised. Went out clubbing and needed a bar mid-partying to regain my senses and stumbled here. You know you're in a gay bar when you look around and every one has perfect hair and stylish clothes... especially, perfect hair. The bartender's here actually know how to make a great cocktail and are very friendly! Great atmosphere from the bartenders to the patrons.

For the most part it is a fun place to hang out but tonight was one of my worst experience at Scandals. A bunch of rowdy people in costume masks decided to take over Scandals and make it their own. I don't have a problem with it except they congregated in our sitting area and one dude rudely bumped into me while dancing with his gal. Scandals is slowly turning into CC Slaughter. Told the bartender but he gave us a weird look. Thanks a lot Scandal...anything for a buck.

Love the darts. Move the board to the old location. Great staff. Friendly place for happy hour

  • DL L.

This club sucks. There is nothing to really see but a bunch of old/older men staring at each other or sleezy men looking to pass STD's. The vibe is very feminine with no real personality & the drinks were watery. Good note: The music & sound system are pretty decent & the 1 pool table is in very good condition.

  • Brendon S.

First time at Scandals. Busy Labor Day weekend. Good drinks. Nice people. Choice of music was questionable for a gay bar. A live DJ would have been much better. Too many "trade" strippers working the room. Try featured performers. (Yea Sterling!) All in all it was a really fun time. I'll be back.

My new favorite bar. I especially love Monroe & Perry who always remember my name, what I drink (a shirley temple) and they always have something going on. Im never bored there and I especially enjoy the themed nights or movie nights! Plus you can get The Roxy Cafe food delivered from next door! Score-

  • Steph B.

I love this place. It's exactly my speed. A bit of neon, open plan, low key patrons all congregated in their spaces, happy but still allowing room to walk by. The bartender, Michael, is amazing. Quick service, good prices, comfortable ambiance. What more can you ask from a late bar?

    (4)
  • Bill F.

It's entirely laid back at Scandals. I'm sure this is probably an after work destination, but I didn't find very much about this place to be interesting. Oddly, I started forgetting about it the moment I walked out the door. Maybe that says more than I can?

    (2)
  • Nikolas B.

Great ambiance, nice music that isn't too loud but is mixed well, large number of beers on tap, friendly staff, pool table, outdoor seating... yet it's half empty?? I dig this place.

I've started a review for Scandal's many times and I'm usually torn between 2 & 3 stars, then end up erasing it. +The atmosphere isn't bad. Clean, plenty of natural light, pool, games, outside seating. It's fairly modern and nice. I would give it 4 stars for these qualities alone. -Make no mistake. You are in a bar for gay men. I don't know if the bartender still asks women for their license to hold to get the bathroom key, but that was the practice for many years. There is (was) an overall vibe that you're an outsider if you're female. It doesn't piss me off, but I do usually choose to take my business elsewhere. YMMV. This is strictly the experience I have had. I'm not trying to offend anyone, or scare them away from this bar. I probably go once or twice a year. +This is a good place to mingle if you're an older gentleman looking to mingle with other older gentlemen, or "twinks" looking for a daddy. There is a larger age disparity in patrons than in most other bars. That's cool, because everyone should have a space where they feel comfortable. They have a pretty loyal following of regulars.

I spontaneously stopped by this bar on my way back to my hotel to grab a drink and get a small sense for the scene in Portland. The bartender was very friendly and approachable, and there was plenty of seating and entertainment (pool table, dart boards, etc.) to be had. The environment seemed pretty casual with no real prominent cliques. Drink prices weren't half bad, either. I'll definitely stop by again, especially if I end up moving to the area.

  • Jasmine O.

Drink and Be GAY! I should have bought a t-shirt.... The patrons were all men but this was where we chose to have our first adult beverage in Portland on Friday afternoon. Not a bad choice at all. Two pints of Pabst and two shots of Jager for only $12. I canNOT get over the booze prices here! And it was across from our hotel... we followed the rainbow flag. I bet this place gets more pretentious at night but the afternoon crowd was super sweet and the bartender paid enough attention to me so I could complete the transaction (not always the case in a man's gay bar). I liked! Very cute.

    (4)
  • David B.

I stopped in for a happy hour drink, and this place was great. It's bright and friendly, and the $1.50 PBR doesn't hurt either.

    (5)
  • David H.

The owner or manager went really out of his way to look out and print out on his computer some information on a camp ground he had stayed at. Their service is good, and the place is clean and tastefully decorated. Because in Portland you have to serve food, they have a kitchen, but ordering food is not really something you want to do at Scandals, as their kitchen consists of a freezer and a deep fryer, I think. So, if you are looking for a restaurant, find a restaurant, but if you want a good gay bar with a good mix of people, Scandals is a winner.

I used to come here often when I was younger. Then a friend and I wandered in here for a drink or three and had a ball. It was early enough that the club part of it was not going yet and the bar section only had a few of us in it. The bar tender was a doll and made good .....very good drinks for us. I used the restroom and have to say the ladies room is very well done. Still wondering why there is a tiny dog above the door and wondered how many people actually notice it.

  • Mindy P.

I don't want to say mean things because I like what this wonderful place usually represents but tonight I would have to give 1 thumb up and 1 thumb down due for the fact of not being served when friends choose to go to silverado.

    (3)
  • Mikhail H.

Not a bad space at all and the women's rest room is all sorts of swanky. The bartenders make an excellent cocktail and I highly recommend karaoke on Tuesday nights.

    (3)
  • Eric S.

My guy and I stop in pretty frequently if we're in the area for a cocktail or two. The people are friendly, the drinks are pretty good (though the pours are inconsistant) and the prices are just fine. I do appreciate that drinks are served in tall glasses as opposed to short glasses which are overflowing with ice (really Portland, this is an epidemic). I've yet to find a gay bar in Portland that really feels like home. I guess coming from San Francisco such bars as The Mix and Pilsner spoiled me. Don't any Portland gays just turn to the people around them and start chatting?? Come on fellas!!

    (4)
  • Tyler C.

This was my first gay bar experience after moving to portland. Can always count on friendly bartenders/patrons for a fun. It's a tad older crowd but the alternative is wayyy too young! Drink specials what you expect from homo's. we like to drink cheap. Weekday nights are good for a quiet drink and weekends start your night here.

  • Jessica D.

Nice little spot to meet up with friends for a cocktail and enjoy the sun.

  • Bettina B.

Found this place here on yelp as well, not my scene at all. I dont mind gay bars, but I think this is more of a guys gay bar...not sure we didnt stay too long. There is ONE bathroom for women here...and it nasty(Clean but smelled very bad!! I know its a bathroom and all but at least some air freshener) or something good lord!!)....and you had to get the key from the bar....

  • Jc R.

    Nice and kool atmosphere.

  • Mark B.

One of the few gay bars in town that has an inviting aura. You can actually look inside the windows and see that a gay bar can be as friendly and " normal" as a non gay bar. Good music, drinks, and service. Unfortunately no appetizers or grub if you want to munch with your drink. We visit primarily by day and the clientele is loyal, meaning a lot of the same faces. They are dog friendly, and plenty of outlets if you want to whistle while you work. Internet isn't always reliable so have a back up plan.

    (3)
  • Brian H.

I give this place 5 stars for one reason: bartenders. These are the best bartenders in town. Always happy, always on task, always strong drinks. I heard a rumor that Scandals is employee owned, maybe that is why they are awesome. I've gone to other gay bars and had to stand around and wait for a drink. and regulars take precedent. Never at Scandals. They take care of you with service and good strong drinks. The beer selection is also good. The outdoor area in the summer is good people watching.

    (5)
  • H M.

I'm surprised to see a couple women saying they did not feel welcome in this gay bar. The last time I came in here with my sister, the bartender was like "Hellooooo Ladiiiiiies!" and helped us right away and chatted with us when we sat at the bar. I've always had a pleasant time here.

    (3)
  • Evan G.

Good layout. Pool table. Friendly smokers outside. This is a decent bar as far as gay bars in Portland go. The bartenders are friendly, but kinda sleazy, as in mildly (but harmlessly) lecherous. A good place to go with others, but not necessarily alone.

    (3)
  • Sara G.

Last time I was at Scandals, it dawned on me I was playing darts to a Beyonce song. With Oprah on the TV. Suck it, sports bars! I don't think I've ever been here past 7 pm... or if I have been, I don't remember it well enough to comment! But I love coming to this friendly gay bar for happy hour, just to relax, have a few (strong!) drinks, and indulge my inner Grace Adler. The patrons are older, chill, and smile warmly rather than roll their eyes when this straight girl walks in the door. I've almost always had someone strike up a conversation while I'm ordering a drink at the bar. The bartenders are quick and heavy with their liquor-pouring. They take credit cards now, too, and a tip for the ladies: there's a secret ladies-room key at the bar. You don't have to brave the open bathroom with its potentially awkward layout. Thank me later.

Wonderfully refreshing place after being scared that places were anti-lesbian... We went on a Random Thursday night.. This was a very chill, friendly bar. Bartenders were great, music was upbeat -a little old school a little new.. Thank you Michael for being such a great bartender.

Love the atmosphere, although sometimes can get a little loud.

  • David S.

Pretty fun gay bar. I was tired from three days of heavy drinking when I was there, so I probably did not enjoy as much as I could have. This seems like a good place to meet for a few drinks with some friends (a lot of tables, seating, corners etc), but I'm sure it's possible to meet new people as well (and in fact I did strike up conversations with a couple of strangers). The music is pretty good (there's a DJ, or at least there was one when I was there), and the drinks are strong! I hear it can get really crowded on some nights, but it was just about right when I was there. Cool place, I'll definitely be back. PS: I can wait for the smoking ban to come into effect... I left the place smelling like cold cigarette smoke, eww!

  • David M.

If you live in the general Scandal's vicinity, then you would probably be all over this bar. There's a pool table, a dart board, a DJ booth, slut machines, and a cash-only bar. The ATM machine is as shady as the men that frequent this bar - my friend and I swiped a combined total of 8 swipes just to get that hoe to take our plastic. Sadly that was only the beginning of the rejection for us that evening. You will definitely be overwhelmed by the mature older crowd of fine gentlemen who frequent Scandals. I've found that the older crowd is the only decent crowd to interact with, as the younger ones who come here tend to take on the typical ADD stance on life, asking lovely questions like, "OMG is he seriously wearing that OMG 4REAL BRB!?" I like to go into Scandals looking like fresh hell, clad in baggy zipups, shorts, and caps. Nothing scares the youngins away faster I tell you! Ho hum.. if you're looking to show your out of town friends a good time this may or may not be a great place to take them. It's kind of a standard locale if you're showcasing all that is gay about Portland. If you're not careful though you could spend a good portion of the evening checking your watch and/or chugging down beers as fast as you can order them. Scandals gets one thumb up.

I am not sure if I like this place, I think they just really need to do a renovation and paint again... the bartender was a bit weird and cocky. Good price drinks and always strong.

Every time I go to Scandals I always think, "Why don't I go here more often?" Heavy pours, friendly gay guys, and decent bar food. Win!

We sat outside with our drinks and took in a free show of people watching. The downtown area has its fair share of transients, and they do not fail to entertain. I liked that the staff didn't make any attempt to chase away the crazies. Dear Whomever with the face paint wearing ribbon necklaces and carrying multiple bags: you, queen, are awesome and know how to put on a show.
