I go to San Felipe all the time. It's close to my house so I can walk there which is great and fortunately I like their food too:) Here's the thing, San Felipe is tasty just like many taquerias in Portland, taquerias that might be much closer to you. BUT! San Felipe is run by the nicest, friendliest most welcoming family around. Imagine: It's Cinco de Mayo and you work at a Mexican Restaurant. You have been open all day selling tacos and margaritas like it is the end of days. You are exhausted, I'm sure. You are minutes from closing when 5 very hungry, also exhausted people come walking through your door. You tell them you're closed but come again, you offer take out only, NO! You sit them down, make them a wonderful meal and top it off with much appreciated margaritas! Why? Because you win at customer service and clearly really care about the people coming in to your restaurant. -I want to say here, that I would normally never show up anywhere this close to closing. We had been going crazy on rides at Oaks Park all day and didn't realize the time- Anyhow, we were treated just as kindly as if we had shown up at a normal, non-rude-as-hell time and given the same great food and service we always get. Definitely give San Felipe a try but come at a regular, polite-patron time because that's just nicer:) -Fresh salsa selection -Full bar -Daily specials -Vegan and Vegetarian friendly -Take out -Sidewalk seating

San Felipe is super casual and reasonably priced. We really love the veggie burritos. Whether you eat in or take out the staff is pleasant and friendly.

Disclaimer-I did not eat here. Recently I had thousands of United miles to cash in before they expired which I cashed in for restaurant.com certificates. (These certificates can be used at any number of crappy dying restaurants in the Portland area with the exception of a handful of one or two decent spots.) I was cold and hungry after work and drove over to San Felipe only to be told that they no longer honor these certificates. The server told me it was up to me to sort it out with restaurant.com despite the fact I had cashed it in for miles only the week prior. What the F#%*! A good business policy would be to honor the customers time and patronage and sort out your own disputes. Overall I was not impressed with the menu which looked greasy, no veggie options on tamales, and only fried fish in the tacos. (I notice most of the reviewers who seem to enjoy the food at this place live nearby it.) In future I will cash in my miles for magazines or find a way to donate them. In any case, I will not return to San Felipe.

Halibut fish tacos are nice. Have their own taste and it's quality. Place is cold and not very appealing. But the food is good for what you pay. I get the fish tacos (halibut) Or I get the Camarones Diablo and it's always tasty. Have had better tamales. But they are okay.

This wonderful, neighborhood gem is "authentic"-ish and has "authentic"-ish food. I got exactly what I expected when ordering a chicken burrito, complete with mediocre (but highly edible) chips and salsa. Plus, a burrito and a margarita for under $12 in PDX is a steal in my book. Plus, I say "authentic"-ish because San Felipe completely made me feel as though I was in a touristy taqueria in Puerto Vallarta or Mazatlan à la Portlandia. Bare minimum, but clean and well lit. While I have nothing extraordinary to say about San Felipe, I have nothing bad to say. The service was courteous and faster than expected, as our food came to the table within 15 minutes of sitting down (probably not even that long). Plus, they did not skimp on the tequila in the margaritas. My date and I left feeling full and happy on the combination of soft tacos, burritos, and tequila. If going on a date ~ I would recommend grabbing one of the booths or taking your food to go (lots of parks and a cute neighborhood make for a fun walking experience). The middle tables are all a little on the impersonal side, but we lucked out and sat at a booth. The dining area was, as mentioned, well lit, but not blinding... Even bordered on ambient. The TVs DO distract, however. I would not be opposed to a second visit, or a third, or more. I got exactly what I wanted at a price I loved.

I really want to absolutely love this place because it's so close and so convenient... sadly I can't. So let me begin with the good: the tortillas. There it was the good. The mediocre comes with the salsa. You can't run a great Mexican restaurant with good tortillas and mediocre salsa. I guess I should take a step back, I'm from San Francisco where I became very spoiled by really amazing burritos, so I'm picky... sue me! The one thing I would recommend is if you order the fish taco or fish burrito order it GRILLED (not listed on the menu). Otherwise it's like eating a crab or fish cake inside your burrito which is not the lightest of faire. Overall a decent place for burrito --- ketchup like salsa with the over-salted chips and meh burritos. But like I said I really WANT to like the place so 3 stars it is.

We just returned from happy hour here and I have a nice mellow feeling from my visit. The house margarita for $3 is enough to get things started... and finished. Awesome. Great counter service. Nice people watching. You know a place is good when they are doing good business on a Monday night. Guac needs some substance though: really runny over the #15 Big Nachos. The chicken in our gordita was seasoned so deliciously that we wished it was all over the nachos too. Chips for openers were not that great: not warm and had a "unique" taste (like wheat?). Overall a good experience and looking forward to another cheap margarita and tacos!

San Felipe has become a staple to my afternoon lunches. The food is authentic and tasty without the grease. The food is incredibly simple, but I never leave this place unsatisfied.

I am a fan of Sellwood and always trying to find good eats there. After reading the previous reviews, I have to agree and disagree with some of the opinions. I tried the fish tacos and yes I agree it has a very Americanized honey mustard sauce that goes on top the fish, but is delicious and I think, people just don't want to admit that. The fish is fried perfectly and is fresh, also it's still accompanied, by the usual fresh cilantro, onion and cabbage. You can get the traditional "street" fish taco anywhere, I see nothing wrong with adding a little twist on it and I think the people who are complaining, secretly knew it was damn good! Your meal also starts with free chips and salsa, which is filled as many times as you'd like. I also am a sucker for salsa bars!! They have an avacado green sauce and a yummy tamatillo sauce and a a very HOT red sauce to the people who love heat and of course the traditional pickled carrots and jalapeños and some of the best iv had, they have some kick. I also ordered the tamals. I got one red and one green. I highly recommend them!!! I like this place cause the flavors standout amongst other everyday taqueria's. The "tamals" were unique with the raisins and carrot and I could taste a garlic flavor to them, which really gave them that extra flavor!! Very moist too! Okay and last, their margaritas are only five dollars and are huge! Very tasty and they are generous with their vodka!! To each their own, but I think it's worth a try, someone might have the same appreciationI did! I will definetly be returning!

I have always had this place recommended to me by co-workers, who seemed to think their burritos topped my favorite, Cha Cha Cha. I had a pork burrito with green chili sauce that was bland and cheesy. Tons of rice and almost no meat. I decided to give them another try and headed down there this afternoon. After ordering a veggie burrito, I was unhappy to see that their approximation of a veggie burrito is wet mess of rice, beans, cheese, and sour cream with a touch of iceberg lettuce and a few pieces of diced tomato. Seriously, gross. So imagine my surprise when I bit into my burrito and found a hair that ran the entire length of the burrito. Upon trying to pull it out, I found that the hair had become enmeshed with the tortilla and tore the burrito open as I pulled it out. The soggy, sour-cream mess fell apart everywhere and cost me about $7.00, for a veggie burrito. Do not go to San Felipe, their prices are outrageous and their food is terrible. Please, for your own sake, go to Cha Cha Cha or La Sirenita II if you are needing Mexican food in Sellwood/Westmoreland.

Just moved into the neighborhood and stopped in to try out this taqueria. I just wanted a couple of asada tacos and was pleased to see they were only $2.25/each. The tacos were full of well seasoned, cooked to perfection asada! Loaded with onion, cilantro and fresh chopped tomatoes. Two tacos was plenty to fill me up. Oh shoot, I almost forgot the best part... wait for it.... homemade tortillas! So damn good. I tried going back last night actually but they were closed due to painting/repairs inside. Boooooo! I will return also for their happy hour every day from 2-5, $1.00 tacos!!!

San Felipe is a GREAT find. I started coming here recently and now can't seem to stay away. I have tried several different tacos (all delicious), the enchilada, and the torta (Mexican style sandwich with meat, large slices of fresh avocado, and other fresh veggies). Also highly recommended: fish tacos. They're crispy and made with a tasty sauce. Overall, I HIGHLY recommend San Felipe. All the meat is uniquely seasoned and the vegetables are fresh. The tortillas struck me as especially delectable, so I inquired with the waitress. She tells me that they are HAND MADE at the restaurant. What an extra touch! This restaurant is family owned and very authentic. Pros: -Excellent meat -Fresh ingredients -Fair price -Fast service Con: -Not enough time in the day to try it all -I live too far away

This is a favorite lunch spot for my office. We usually get to-go, but have eaten in as well. The taco salad w/any of the meat choices is perfect for lunch and is personal fav, but others at work swear by the whole menu. Friendly and very authentic baja food, San Felipe is on the gulf of California, the fish taco is their "signature" item and is always good. One of these w/a Jarritos and I'm good to go.

I dont know what these other people are eating but I only get tacos here and I really like them! My fish tacos always are great! When the lady is working they as always the best! Carne could be less greasy but cheap margaritas which is ways nice!

I love this place and we have been eating here for about 10 years now. Their Chicken Torta sandwich is to die for and their Fish Tacos are out of this world. Prior to eating their fish tacos I didn't ever want to try them or thought they were anything good. San Felipe's fish tacos are made with light and crispy Halibut, a delicious shredded cabbage slaw and a dressing that compliments the taco nicely. All of their menu items are great and I also recommend the Saturday Specials. Everything is reasonably prices and service is fast and polite.

Having just moved into Westmoreland, it would be really cool to have a good mexican place just around the corner. The Taqueria is a good place to go. I ordered a pork torta, which was absolutely excellent (although I have a soft spot for tortas), but it was a little on the expensive side and I'm not sure why; the place is somewhat minimalist. You order at the counter, the inside seemed a little aged and the people who were there mostly opted for eating on the three picnic tables outside, and there is a water cooler in the dining room that you can get your own cup at. Going to the Taqueria should be an experience mostly for the food.

This updates saddens me to write since I was so delighted to have a decent burrito joint so close to me. However after repeated visits to San Felipe, I feel it is my yelpy duty to report that while the first burrito I ate was delicious, it was apparently a bit of a fluke. Now maybe I have just been unlucky the subsequent, ahem, 15 or so visits (don't judge me) but I really think I am just chasing the dragon at this point. And it's not so much the quality as the consistency; a missing ingredient here, a slightly off order there. When I order a burrito with no meat and I get home only to discover that this sorry excuse contains only two ingredients 1) beans and 2) a hint of avocado it's time to face the cold, hard reality that it's time to find a new supplier to get my fix from. I mean seriously, no cheese? No Pico? No lettuce? No sour cream? No RICE????? Booooo.....

San Felipe is a wonderful, casual, tasty restaurant. If you want a satisfying meal where the servers are very nice and the food is tasty go to San Felipe. My favorite(s) is the fish taco plate and their delicious tacos. Their tortillas are really tasty. There beans and rice are also really good.

Ok so here is the deal, not much of a deal at all, really. I have been coming here for years, probably 5. Its always been good Mexican, but has always cost a little more than the avg taqueria. The carnitas have been crispy and well cooked. The veggie burrito has been the standard, but was always around $5. You always received chips and salsa with your to-go orders. I was always ok with the price bc the ingredients had more quality than the average greasy taqueria. About 2 weeks ago, I ordered a veggie burrito(beans, cheese, rice, lettuce, pico, and sour cream) the same I had before, but for $6.50 this time. The owner told me they used to be the owners years ago, and they had bought it back to give us better recipes and higher quality of food. I got my food, and began to walk out when I realized I didnt have the chips and salsa (that had always come with the to-go orders in the past). I asked the cashier, and he sighed, and told me that chips and salsa only come with the plate orders. Which, my veggie burrito for $6.50, was clearly not a plate order. That's fine, I understand, maybe they are trying to make some minor cut backs. So I open up my burrito, and my first bite tastes just like the burrito I had in the past for $5. I swore I wouldnt go back because it had become more expensive with less incentives. But I still like their pinto beans, hot sauces, and that its not greasy. So I went in there today for lunch. I order a bean and cheese burrito, because clearly I dont need the sour cream or the other additives. He says it's $6.50, at this point I should have walked away. But I didnt. I suggest that because its bean and cheese only I probably shouldnt be charged the same price as the veggie. I used to get a bean and cheese burrito at san felipe for $4.50. So I paid $2 more for the same burrito. I feel like I have been yet ripped off again by San Felipe. Maybe Ill still go there for my carnitas or fish taco, but I will never go there again for a veggie or bean and cheese burrito. Too expensive for vegetarian food.

I'm a very tough judge of Mexican food... born and raised in a part of California where there are more Mexican restaurants than all other restaurants *combined*. You can get better than San Felipe, but this place at least does some great tacos. Better yet, they do $1.00 happy-hour tacos every day from 2-5 pm, with $2.50 beers. Check it out! Depending on how hungry I am, I get three or four tacos of all different kinds. Great deal!

What quaint little place! From the music to the decor, it actually felt like we were in Mexico. The wet burritos were fantastic, as was my $5 margarita! And who can resist complimentary chips and salsa?? After seeing a movie at Moreland, we stopped in here for dinner. The Mexican restaurant down the street was closed - and I'm glad, or we wouldn't have thought to try this place. It was close to closing time, but we got very good service and not to feel like we were being rushed out the door. The prices were also very good, which made seeing a $5 movie and getting food here after a really great evening out.

I would def eat here again. Burrito needs more meat and less rice, but the flavor is on point!

Honestly, this is one of Portland's best local neighborhood finds. I just started exploring the Sellwood area recently and I keep finding myself back there again and again! The service is very friendly and accommodating, the drinks are made well and the food takes me back to Mexico. My Advice: Go early because the place fills up fast. It's really great to try all the home made salsas as well because they are all so different and flavorful. I love the rojo y verde tamales and the fish tacos are great but I normally go with the enchiladas mexicanas. They are unlike anything I've had anywhere. It's obvious they put a lot of time and care in everything they make. Will I be going back again? Yeah, I'll see you soon. p.s. San Felipe has great outdoor seating so get there early, pair it with a refreshing margarita and send the cook some love.

Tacos for $1.00. Beer for $2.50. That's what the Happy Hour sign said. That's what brought us in. No, it wasn't the bright and recently painted picnic tables, though who can miss those. You could say we prefer cheap food over aesthetics, and you are probably correct. San Felipe serves up some mighty delicious tacos. The Happy Hour tacos are on the small side but they packed them with as much filling as possible. We recommend the juicy carnitas and the flavorful pastor. The carne asada didn't really satisfy our taste buds after we ate the pastor. We liked the family friendly service supplied by the mother and daughter team. The dining area is homey and far from intimidating. We can't wait to go back.

Absolutely my favorite fish tacos I've ever had! Something about the special sauce they put on them makes them more than your standard fish taco. Definitely worth checking out and its affordable!

San Felipe was one of the first "authentic" taquerias I had been to in Portland. This was back in the 90's when it was just a very small, sleepy taco joint. It has evolved quite a bit. . .now it has a larger space with a full bar and a couple of flat screen TVs. Their fish taco has been a specialty there for quite a while. I like it because it's made with halibut rather than some other generic no-name whitefish. I would have liked it even more if it was grilled instead of fried, but it's still very good. In addition to shredded cabbage and pico de gallo, it was also topped with their "secret sauce" which had kind of a sweet taste. That sweet taste was a bit unusual for a taco, but I liked it. I also had one of their "made fresh daily by hand" chicken tamales. I ordered mine topped with green Verde sauce. The tamale was large, moist, and had a lot of chicken meat in it. . .all good. Overall, I got tasty, well prepared food in a pleasant place. . .with football games showing on both TVs. No complaints!

Nostalgia can screw with your palate sometimes. I used to worship this place like a taco god back when it first opened and I lived in the Brooklyn neighborhood. I can't really say if its just that other places have arised to the occasion to rival this place, or if the quality at San Felipe has dropped, but it's not as impressive any longer. It's quite good though.

I like this place. My sister and I ended up here because Salvador Molly's (or whatever that place is called) was mobbed and we didn't have the patience to wait for an hour before eating. Glad we went to SFT instead. Complimentary chips and salsa, love the chips, though the salsa (or pico de gallo, whatever it was) served with it was just okay. however, they have four other self-serve salsa options that were awesome. I loved the avocado salsa and mixed in a spicy orange (habanero??) one. Delicious. The menu is large--it took me awhile to decide. Settled on a 'sope' (thick tortilla like thing) which was covered in beans, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, etc. Mine 'vegetarian' as I asked for beans and toppings only. I didn't ask if the beans were cooked in lard (because I don't care), but a real vegetarian might. Mine was great. I threw on some avocado/habanero salsa as a topper. My sister got the fish tacos and liked hers a lot too. We also got a side of guac which was also good. Service was crazy fast too. Their prices are good and they've got a super cheap happy hour--tacos, nachos and quesadillas for around $2. Try it yourself.

Someone once told me that I would miss good Mexican food when I moved to Portland. WRONG. There are some great Mexican joints around town, but none have given me quality, local Mexican style cuisine better than San Felipe Taqueria (which happens to be conveniently located about 50 steps from home). The fish tacos were great. The veggie tacos looked great. The prices were reasonable. The staff includes the owner and her family. The food is inspired by the owner's family recipes, which is great because she is actually from San Felipe, Mexico. Great food, good prices. Good by my book.

I got the #2 combination to go, 1) I had to try the fish taco and 2) I was parked in the 15 minute spot. At $15 it was a bit steep especially when you consider it's basically a self-serve joint. The combo included a chili rellenos, a hard shell taco (my choice of meat was carne asada), a fish taco, beans, rice, and chips and salsa. A big amount of food for sure. While waiting, I helped myself to the various sauces they offered as well as some of the spicy pickled vegetable. Even though the place was packed, I got my food fairly quickly and headed for 'home'. The fish taco was packed separately so I went for that right off the bat. It was a-may-zing! I would go back just for another of those. Halibut chunks battered and deep fried in a soft shell with shredded cabbage and a slightly sweet, spicy sauce. By the time I got to the hard shell taco, it was not so hard. But again, the flavors were very delicious. Though the rest of the meal was good, it paled in comparison to the two tacos. This is a much stop place if you're in the area.

The fish tacos are alright but just not enough to pay almost $4 for one let alone $11 for a combo plate. They're heavily battered & the only thing that has flavor is the special sauce. The combo plate includes rice & beans along with chips & salsa. The rice was dry & it looked a day old. The beans were bland & the chips were stale. The vegetarian burrito... well, just don't bother. It's boring & I'm bored writing about it. Pretty sure the $1 tacos happy hour no longer exists. If it does then that's the only time one should eat here.

As good as most (but certainly not all) of the taco trucks we've tried in Portland so far. We haven't sampled much of the menu but the fish tacos here are actually quite good. Their downfall is the lack of imagination in decor but the staff are upbeat, the price is good and the location is nice for enjoying an afternoon meal while visiting the Moreland-Sellwood neighborhoods.

$4 fish tacos with a 'special sauce' that is no more than cheap CISCO honey mustard and loads of cabbage over a deeply battered piece of barely-there fish. Also: listed as plural 'TACOS', but really just one taco with one measly corn tortilla. Veggie burrito has no flavor to it and is a rip off at $6.50 given the execution and size. All jammed into a bag with stale tortilla chips, and you are welcome to help yourself to salsas, but they are all uninspired, taste the same, and could easily be premade. Randomly bought a Jarrito (for $1.75 no less) despite the fact I never really drink soda, and all of the sodas were warm in the cooler--I brought it home and stuck it in my fridge to drink later. Service staff looks like they don't want to be there and are sharply dressed no matter because of how cheaply made their food is, but how bloated and oversized their prices are--a lone cook works in the kitchen = long wait times, quickly put together and messy dishes. I will never go here again.

This place is one of a handful of legitimate Mexican places around! Great food! Excellent service! never had a complaint and I eat here twice a week at least. I suppose it can be considered to be a little pricey but for the quality of the food I can't complain. Some of the best beans I've had in town, reminds me of home in Northern California.

Breaks my heart to write a negative review about this place. It used to be the best fish tacos and accompaniments around. I had not been back in a few years and tried it the other day. What a disappointment. I can only assume it has changed ownership. The fish tacos were overpriced ($11 for a plate with two tacos dry rice and flavorless beans) and the fish was minescule and over battered. the sauce which used to be fabulous is over sweet and overpowers the tiny bit of fish in the taco. service was not bad and the restaurant looks much better than it used to, but i would trade it for the run down place with fabulous food anytime.

I've never been disgusted halfway through a meal until tonight. Until tonight I've loved San Felipe because their food was good and their location is close to home, but that all changed halfway through the chicken burrito plate I ordered a half hour ago. I took a bite and thought "This chicken is way too tough!" only to then spit out a fucking bandaid. I'm not kidding, a bandaid. One that was so throughly used the pad was completely saturated with congealed blood. That thing was in my mouth for god's sake. They did give me my money back right away, but not the $2.00 tip I left them. Accidents happen sure, but finding a bandaid in my burrito was so wildly unacceptable.

When I moved to Sellwood, I kept hearing about how this place had the best fish tacos around. I've been here twice to try them, and they are not so good. I'm honestly not sure if the batter was the problem or the oil it was fried in, but it didn't taste fresh. Having never made fish tacos in my life, I don't know what kind of sauce is typical for them, but I'm pretty sure it's not honey mustard. It just wasn't right. Also, I thought it was a bit over priced. $11 for 2 small fish tacos w/rice and beans. Not worth the $$ in my opinion. If these use to be the best fish tacos, they are not anymore. I saw another review say they might be under new management. That might explain it.

I drive by this place everyday and have often wanted to stop but didn't have time. If only I knew what I was missing out on. This place is cute, comfortable, and has best tacos in town! They come on homemade tortillas and are delicious.

I work nearby, and I was craving chile relleno. My first instinct was to go to Iron Horse, across the street, but I decided to change it up. I waited for my food order to go, and when I arrived back to my work I was very disappointed. The To-go box my meal was in was soggy to the point of the bottom and sides collapsing in. What appeared to be the chile rellenos was a pile of "broth" or what was supposed to be sauce. It leaked over the inside of the bag. Both pieces were soggy as well which made it a pain in the a$$ to eat.hardly any cheese, or breading on the outside, since it was all mushed in with the broth. I ended up pouring out the liquid and eating the side of rice and beans instead. For $10.99, it wasn't worth it. I should have gone with my first instinct and gone elsewhere. Save your $ and go somewhere else.

The menu tricks you a bit.. It says Fish Tacos (plural) @$3.95. I ordered the fish tacos and was charged $7.90 without being informed or asked how many I wanted. I let it slide... I was hungry so two sounded perfect. Let's just say... the batter on the "fish" was extremely thick.. not a lot of fish if you ask me. The only thing I could really taste, was the crema they use to mask this poorly executed taco. Really sweet... too sweet for my taste. But hey, some people prefer it. Loads of cabbage a bit of pico de gallo, and two dry tortillas. Zero complexity. I generally think $8 for two paltry tacos is too much. $3 per taco sounds more like it to me. I miss RUBIOS! I'll try this place one more time and order something else on the menu, but I have a feeling it's going to be an all around meh experience. p.s Their chips are kind of horrible. Really dense, hard, and feel stale. ANY mexican restaurant should have edible chips and salsa in my opinion.

Last time I was there I wait 20 minutes to get my food, we order chips and salsa while we're waiting for our food, the salsa taste like can tomato sauce and they just add some spices to it, they have one lady cooking which is very slow, and one guy at the counter which also was making drinks while other people wait at the door for 7 minutes without saying "I'll be right with you in just a moment" as soon as we arrived my wife notice a really bad smell in that place, the bathroom is disgusting and smell like urine really bad. So I order tacos al pastor very disappointed I got a something else instead I was so hungry that I did not say anything because I did not want to wait another 20 minutes to get my food fixed. There was no flavor too bland. If someone read this and they want really good tacos ROBO TACOS is the place they have authentic tacos al pastor.

There's a tiny fish-themed restaurant (not Mexican-themed) in No Po that bears a superficial resemblance to San Felipe--- The Fish Wife. That, along w/a long-standing love-affair w/comida Mexicana predisposed me to liking San Felipe's Taqueria from the get-go. This love turned out to be of the strictly unrequited variety. The Black-Eyed Peas had a song about this very topic: "Where is the love?" and that is what I ask of you, San Felipe: por todo lo que es Santo, " ¿Dónde está el amor? "

we ate here after a wedding yesterday, and it was very tasty. no host bar for the reception, and we began with a bottle of pacifico, and a cadillac marguerita. both hit the spot. i had the guacamole, fish tacos, and beans/rice. it was very delicious. my partner had the above, plus chicken tamales. she was very happy. the staff was very friendly and efficient. thx

Would have been alright but I don't like restaurants that smell like the elephant pen at the zoo...Can't get past it! Kinda dirty too. Had to ask 3 times for my beverage....won't be back.

Fish tacos are yummy This is a tasty Mexican spot to hit for lunch in the Sellwood neighborhood but leave your calorie-conscience mind behind here. I've been here a couple of times for lunch on a Saturday after some shopping and it never disappoints, although my pants always feel a bit tighter when I go. Maybe that's because everything I love here is either fried or just plain fattening. My favorite is the fish tacos made with fried halibut. But if you're really up for something tasty and are skinny, I'd go for their Tortas. Their Mexican fried sandwiches filled with everything you love but try to stay away from on sandwiches. Tip: Margaritas are darn good too.

San Felipe is the home of my favorite Fish Taco in PDX. Refreshing with a tangy sauce. Also they Mole is top notch(only available on Sat. usually) The rest of the menu is good as well. It would get 5 stars if it was cheaper. It's like $11 for a Fish Taco Combo meal which is pretty steep.

I used to couch surf around the corner from San Felipe Taqueria when I first moved to Portland, OR. You're probably surprised to hear that people couch surf in PDX. Frankly, I didn't believe it myself until I moved there. Maybe things have changed, but I always had a good experience there. The sopes and fish tacos are great. I don't remember the prices being too high, but this was 7 years ago. Everyone seemed to be friendly, but then again, I'm a friendly guy. This is a counter joint, not a sit down restaurant with waiters. This may be the cause of what some reviewers deem to be bad customer service. If you're looking for a good, authentic sit down Mexican food restaurant, try El Ranchito in Lake Oswego, OR. SFT is one of my top three Mexican places in Portland, OR (Taqueria Uruapan and Super Burrito Express-which may or may not now be Burrito King).

I've lived in the neighborhood for over a year and never stopped in, but last night I just had to have some mexican food, I wanted fresh made tamales or fish tacos. So as I was making my way home I hit the brakes made a hard right into a parking place and walked in to my first San Felipe Taqueria experience. First, I have to say that I'm from SoCal, so I'm a Pacific Coast Fish Taco kinda Gal. I love fresh made salsa, soft tacos with mystery sauce and cabbage, and of course Tito's Tacos in L.A. Next I have to share that a few weeks ago I made tamales from scratch with friends, and although everybody oohed and aahed, I didn't think they were very good. You've got to try Mama's daily prepared Tamales Rojes, mmmmmmmm!!!! Then grab a plate of fish tacos or some other yummy thing. I noticed that they cater to most everyone, maybe not vegans, but the Vegi's among you will find plenty of options. I know some folks have mentioned that they think it is overpriced, but I walked out with way too much food for less than $9. Yep, I had leftovers for today. So meet me for some Tacos on a Tuesday, and you can find out for yourself.

Not really sure what to say other than I was pretty disappointed. I came here strictly for the fish tacos on which I've heard great things and was hoping for an epic taco. Unfortunately, there was much left to be desired. The tortilla was a little soggy, couldn't taste much of the fish and the slaw' was a bit much. And for 3.95 a taco, that really irritated me. Something like what I was served should be no more than 2 bucks a pop. It wasn't disgusting by an means but was hoping for a little more. I've had my fair share of great fish tacos and this isn't even in the top 10. Maybe I'll give it one more try and if things haven't changed, bye bye San Felipe.

Yuppie taquerias have their place. Some people want to have a burrito w/o any of the inconvenience of hearing spanish or seeing something as confusing as "lengua" on the menu. And if that's what you're after, San Felipe is a great place. You can pay $10 for a plated burrito, or enchilada, and the floor is super clean. I, however, do not care to wait 30 minutes for a burrito in miniature. A hint of carnitas at a 30% mark up over my favorite burrito joints is not really what I'm after. Oh, and has anyone had the pleasure of meeting the owner?? What a douche.

Terrible fish tacos with barely any fish! 8 dollars for two and I was still as hungry as when I walked in. They are tiny. Disgusting secret sauce that tastes like sugar; ew, and tiny strips of fried fish covered in chopped onions. If their fish tacos truly are the best thing on their menu then they have a real problem.

Really good. I have searched portland and been disappointed in joints like Por Que No, Cha Cha Cha, etc. This place is the bomb. very good food, great prices. The chips & salsa aren't great, but everything else is.

I don't know if they read my review or what, but I have to say that the girls have not been working there the last several times I have gone. The guys working there now have been incredibly nice and even remember my order. It's a world of difference and I'm back to going there pretty frequently now. The food consistency has also improved - no more crunchy rice! Great service, great food - 5 stars!

I'm very mixed on this place. I've been twice in my year in Portland and had relatively the same experience. Food is decent. Service is a little lacking. Salsa is yummy. I like that they have outdoor seating ... nice for those warm summer days. Will probably go back since they are in our 'hood ... but overall ... I'm not a huge fan.

In my futile search for a SF style taqueria in Portland, I came upon San Felipe. I had fish tacos in Hawaii the last time I was there and i really enjoyed them so I tried them here. San Felipe's are pretty darn close and very tasty. They aren't good for you because the fish is fried in batter and the sauce probably contains some sort of mayo, but hey that's not what I was looking for anyways. They have a great selection of salsas and pickled carrots/jalapenos. You can eat outside on a sunny day and enjoy your fish tacos. I wouldn't recommend the fish burrito, it loses something compared to the tacos. And I really don't think tacos should cost this much, so I took off one point. But it does fill a need, a fish taco need.

We always get our fish tacos to go, which are delicious and highly economical to say the least. We went in over the weekend and actually sat down and ate. Yes, the fish tacos were just as good as eating them from my couch. Yes, my husbands burrito seemed to be pleasing to him. My favorite part of the experience was the mango margarita. I could drink so many of those tasty beverages. The last time I had a mango margarita was in Mexico, and you can imagine, or infer from my expressed excitement, how happy I was to see this on the menu. I had a flicker of doubt, wondering if it would be as good as it was when I was soaking up vitamin D by the ocean. While I can't exactly replicate the ocean part, or even the vitamin D part lately here in Portland, the margarita was divine. Apparently they do other flavors, but I only had eyes, or taste, for mango. I may frequent here more often just to get my mango margarita fix.

All I can say is: Gordita con carnitas sin frijoles. Or, if you rather, stewed pork in fried dough with cheese inside and out. Yum. Yum. Yum. Well worth the trip to Sellwood/Westmoreland. Plus, there are chips, tacos, tamales, and everything in between.

Although the fish tacos and carne asada are quite good - particularly if you order the handmade tortillas - the prices are just too high.

San Felipe's food is okay, pretty much what you'd expect at your usual taqueria. On food alone I would give them 3-4 stars. Instead I'm giving 2 stars because of the a-holes they now put behind the counter (service used to be much better). I don't care if it is a family business. The last guy we had didn't acknowledge us for several minutes, though we were the only ones at the counter, and he was practically glaring at us while we placed our order. There are so many other places with better food and friendly service that there is very little reason left to go here again.

Yummy. The BF and I stopped in here when the menu at the Limelight seemed pretty boring and overpriced. Our decision was a wise one. San Felipe was fun, welcoming, and the food was tasty. We ordered a tofu burrito that was pretty awesome. The tofu was cubed in small pieces, was perfectly marinated with lots of flavor. In my experience, this is a rarity in tofu-burrito land as they usually come with bug hunks of under cooked, under flavored tofu. We got free chips and salsa, which the staff happily refilled. They weren't anything special, but were a tasty snack while I sipped my house margarita and we waited a very reasonable time for our meal.

San Felipe Taqueria provides the Westmoreland/Sellwood neighborhoods with good and standard taqueria fare. On the menu you'll find the old standard tacos, tortas, and burritos, and the family that runs this place is friendly--it's no wonder it's a neighborhood favorite. Furthermore, they've recently expanded their menu and licensing to include drinks, so now you can get a margarita with your burrito.

The food's pretty great, but the prices have gone up. Also, they used to run these coupons that were basically a buy 1 meal get one meal free (minus beverages, naturally) and those were great. However, I still had one saved from last year and last time I went in they informed me "oh, we don't take THOSE anymore," and gave me some sort of snotty attitude about it. I was with a friend from out of town, so it was slightly embarassing, too. Here's the rub: there's NO EXPIRATION DATE on the freakin' coupon. HEY! Don't run a coupon with no expiration date on it for over two years and then refuse to accept it when you stop running it. That's some terrible customer service right there. Zero business acumen. All they had to do was accept the coupon and I'd have been perfectly happy with them. Instant smiling customer. Instead, I now see them as just another so-so restaurant with bad customer service and no idea how to really treat people. Lame, lame, lame. I probably won't go back. The customer service used to be great when the restaurant opened years ago--but now it's impersonal, unfriendly, and full of attitude.

This place is pretty unremarkable. I just ate there for the first time. On the menu they mention that Saturday they have mole specials. Since we were here on a Saturday we tried to order mole and they told us they didn't have any. Bummer. I had the tamale rojo. It was just OK. Since it wasn't served with any sides, I ordered a side of rice. The rice was pretty dry. My husband had chorizo. He said it was decent. I tried his side of beans and they were creamy and good. You don't get chips and salsa without paying for them as an appetizer. The quantity of chips and salsa they gave us was pretty small. One thing I particularly didn't like about this place was the soft drinks. We each ordered soft drinks from the fountain. The server brought us drinks that were in small cups like a child would get. Since they were filled with ice, there was not very much to drink. It just seemed stingy. Anyhow, next time I'll just go down the street to ChaChaCha.

This place isn't terrible but after 3 tries I see no reason to go when la serenita is just down the road, cheaper and WAY more delicioso.

Great deal!

Great deal!

Really good. I have searched portland and been disappointed in joints like Por Que No, Cha Cha Cha, etc. This place is the bomb. very good food, great prices. The chips & salsa aren't great, but everything else is.

Amazing chicken soft tacos and they don't use lard in their beans. I love this place. I don't live close to it anymore, but if you do....TRY IT!!

Tip: Margaritas are darn good too.

been here a few times since my first review and I have to say that the customer service is definitely what hold this place back. The food is good , but the general attitude towards customers is disdain rather than appreciation. Too bad!

Best fish tacos around. Some stuff seems a little over priced, but I still love this place.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
