I've been here three times during the summer. The patio has always been packed. I'm not really into the hoppy NW beers so I really enjoy the beer here. I've always had great service here, no matter how packed the place gets. The first time I came here, there were a bunch of people that were wearing lays and the bartender played along and wore one too. It was a good gesture on his part but I'm not sure what lays have to do with Germany. You definitely go to the food carts that are adjacent to the patio to get food before going to this place.

I went here one hot sunny weekday with a summer goal in mind: to drink the beer out the of huge glass boot. I was ready and determined as I planted myself on one of the outside benches. Little did I know that you had to have a group of 3 people to order the boot because it's 2 liters that you must pass around after each sip which you're not allowed to set down on the table! We were only a party of 2. Damn! So I just ordered half liters of the wheat beer I had last time, the Franziskaner Weissbier. It's such a nice sunny day beer to drink. Also had some curry wurst (yum!) to snack on. In the 2-3 hours I spent there, I had a total of 1.5 liters of beer. I could've easily had another which meant that I totally could've tackled the BOOT on my own! *sigh*

Awesome German style beers, with knowledgeable staff and amazing food carts right outside, which you are allowed to bring into the bar.

I like fancy beer places. I am not talking about fancy places with beer, I am talking about fancy beer in places. Every style beer has it's own style glass and the bar staff knows what's what, and they have beer knowledge which is always a plus. I had the dark Hef, AMAZING! I love getting food from the surrounding carts and having a beer, because I like having beer with food. The patio fills up quickly on nice days, and a my beer is bigger battle silently ensues. The bar actually opens up to the patio so every seat is almost outside. I have yet to try any of the food as it seems a bit overpriced, and the fact my favorite cart is right here. I love this place.

I really like the beer selection (Schwarzbier is my favorite). The building has been restored tastefully and looks great. My only complaint is for a bar being on Mississippi, this is NO Mississippi bar. The last 8 or 10 times I've been there (I'm telling you the Schwarzbier is superb) the crowd has become a Beaverton/Vancouver/West Linn stomping ground. Nothing wrong with that, just if you are in the mood for a East side chill establishment on Mississippi with casual Portlandians, this isn't it. With that said I'll still be visiting, probably earlier in the day before the bridge crowds arrive.

Kolsch. On. Tap. That gets all the stars - if it didn't have kolsch on tap, it'd get 3 stars. Food - gerkinsalaat can use some improvement but other than that, the sausages and sauerkraut are good and you get what you expect. Food is affordable but without schnitzel on the menu, it won't get the extra star. Lose a star because the bathrooms are rank. Not sure if it is indeed dirty but it be stankin like piss. I guess it's what happens when you get a bunch of dudes and a bunch of beer together.

This German beer house is a must attend. Love everything about it, especially the different beer litre sizes. If you dare and have enough drinking partners try "das boot". It's worth the $50 deposit. As long as you don't break it, you get your deposit fully-refunded. The place seems small until you realize there's outdoor seating. Can't wait to check it out this Summer. Didn't try the food, so I can't write about it. But I did noticed very few ate, mostly people were there to converse and drink. Although it's small in size it fills a great pack of people. Great place to hang and drink.

Beers. More beers. Beers in boots. Beers in mugs. Beers in funny glasses. And all quite tasty. Nice outdoor deck, even when chilly. But be careful out there, you gotta be quiet and respect the neighbors...shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Got pretty crowded on a Saturday night, which explains the spotty service- but this happens now and again. At least the bartender apologized after making me wait 10 minutes to order at the bar. The place could probably use a 3rd bathroom, just sayin'.

We have been going in consistently for a few years now and are always pleased with the atmosphere, the excellent service, and the great beers. It is usually packed with people most of which are friendly and cheerful. The staff at Probst works very hard and is always friendly no matter what the situation may be. The patio is great during the summers with an attatched flat screen. I would recommend this place to someone who wants a small bar feel with a friendly vibe. My favorite beer here is the Dunkleweizen which is a dark hefeweizen. If you have 3 of these your body starts to feel good and you may rush home to do other things...Just kidding but not really. This is also a good place to watch Soccer games...and has two bathrooms...heard this the other day on the patio...good times Hannah: I'm here to bang the hot guy who hit on me at the bar. Jacob: Jacob. Hannah: Jacob! Sorry, Jacob... Jacob: Do people still say "bang"? Hannah: I do. And we're gonna bang!

Dear Prost, You have such a warm and inviting atmosphere, especially on a cold, windy, rainy night. And you have delicious beer, so delicious in fact, that I feel it necessary to order huge tankards of it and drink it as fast as humanly possible. I then find myself trying to say Spaten Optimator just like Arnold. AHHHHP-Ti-Ma-TAHHHHHH. Get in the CHAAH-PAHHH! Enter massive headache the next day. Seriously, this is just not right. And the sick sadistic part of it is, I think you do it on purpose. I picture you sitting in the corner plotting what new gallon of beer your going to slam down in front of me next with an evil giggle. But I love you, none the less. Can't help it.

For me, PROST! does one thing and does it well: it triggers a sense of sheer glee. During recent visits, it was virtually impossible for me to ditch the maniacal grin I had on my face the entire time. Why? Our European quaffing counterparts will tell you that beer should--no, MUST--be drunk from an optimized glass shape to experience the penultimate Zymurgic pleasure. Germans assert this with a distinct air of teutonic indomitability; a Hefeweizen, they would say, is simply not RIGHT unless consumed from "zee correkt glass" (tall and shapely, in this case). For all the homogeneity we assume of the Germans, it is amazing to see how many glass designs they've mustered. This sense of aesthetic is a charming departure from the beer glass varieties found at most Portland pubs: imperial, regular pint and child-under-12 size. And, as I've experienced virtually everywhere in Europe, your highly optimized beer containing vessel must have the logo of the EXACT brand of beer you're drinking. I'm uncertain as to why this is the case, but believe it does speed up the process of re-ordering the same ("I'll have another pint") without having to mention the brand again. Lord knows we'd all be put out by that half-second delay. Just before your moment of bliss, your glass should be rinsed and subsequently be filled with the pour aimed at the MIDDLE of the glass. This (intentionally) kills some of the palate-harshing carbonation and awakens the diaphonous aromas contained therein to waft more vigorously into your nose. PROST! has and does all of these things, and on our little journey, releases a floodgate of European travel memories with many attendant pleasures. Drinking countless pints of pilsner in Prague or doppelbock in Salzburg with stoneware liter steins (free arm workout!), the combination of an ethanol-tinged tasty tipple combined with great conversation with new friends in a new exotic land is a carefully treasured memory. This Cathedral to Reinheitsgebot is the Disneyland of German bier: a very happy place, indeed! [FOOD: On Saturdays, in place of the traditional food stalls that might ring a German beer hall, one can go instead to one of many excellent carts at the "Mississippi Market", order a meal, and (gasp!) BRING IT INSIDE. Your bartender may even complement your choice! I find this sort of openness quite refreshing--and one that we should all support by carefully cleaning up after ourselves and depositing refuse in the trash cans on the deck. Also, try the pretzel.]

  • Kristin R.

I freaking LOVE Prost. The food menu is relatively small, but their beer more than makes up for it. The bartenders are knowledgeable and make sure to serve you beer in the correct glass. Not only does this enhance the flavor, it's gives you some geek cred. Beers come in all sizes and shapes - literally. They do have boots but I've heard rumors that you have to have 3 drinkers before they'll serve you one. Be sure to try the pretzel with the lighter mustard (not the "crunchy" one). It's sweet and tastes so yummy then will punch you right in the sinuses. While this doesn't sound fun, it actually is. The patio is great on the nice spring days, and is dog friendly. Major plus in my book.

I would describe this place as a distinctly Portland version of a German Hofbrauhaus. The atmosphere is relaxed and fun, the service is great, and the beer selection is faaaaantastic! I wouldn't come here to eat, unless you are going to partake in the fantastic food cart selection in the same lot. I went with a bunch of ladies and the food selection, while authentic, was not appetizing. I didn't want to be chatting away while trying to eat a brat - not that talented ;p Overall though, I think this is a great place to go to relax and hang out with a cool boot full o' beer.

I love this bar. Attention to detail on every level. First, it is beautifully done, Intricate wood working, gorgeous wooden tables, a lovely back porch that opens to the food carts in the lot surrounding it. Second, if you order a beer from Prost, you can bring food from the carts up onto their porch-- which is a great idea-- but their food is actually better than any of the carts'. Don't go to Prost looking for a big dinner, but their bar menu is yum, yum, yummy (ONLY if you are a meat eater-- vegetarians will have to get by with the Gurkensalat or pretzels.) Third, for those who appreciate their German beer-- their draught beer choices are perfect. It's not a very big menu, but I prefer that. They have exactly what they need. In addition, they have a rotating weissbier and a rotating tap. Also, they have a bunch of bottled beer, but I haven't spent much time looking at those. Full bar for those who want. I recommend the Gurkentini. The only negative is that sometimes it is just too crowded, especially in the winter when it gets too cold or wet to spend the evening outside. My kind of sports bar.

I headed to Prost for a happy-hour yelp event (UYEPT) and apparently the weather gods smiled upon us for long enough to enjoy the patio. It's a nicely-built patio, and next to the cart pod, but sadly all but one cart was closed by the time we got there, and the one holdout, the cupcake cart, closed up shortly afterwards. I was surprised to see this given they've got a basically captive audience, but hey, can't blame Prost for this. As for Prost, it's a pretty nice German beer hall. The tap selections are pretty mainstream, though. I had a couple Bitburger Pils, which is my fallback-beer at German places that don't have more obscure (and crisp) options like Jever. The table service out on the patio seemed to mainly consist of barbacks collecting empty glasses and scampering away before you can even ask for a menu or place a food order, so that was a little frustrating. I had the "pretzel sandwich" as well, and was pretty disappointed that it wasn't actually made from a pretzel, but rather from a pretty boring sandwich roll type of bread with a slightly-chewy crust reminiscent of a pretzel. It was pretty thin on the fillings, and the meat that was in it was super-bland. For the price, I was expecting more. I guess I've been spoiled by more full-service and authentic gasthaus and bierstube type places, but I wasn't impressed. The patio is the real saving grace. 3.5 stars, rounded up to 4 because the service, once you get it, is totally friendly.

I like German beer. In fact, I love German beer. But Portland has good beer and many places to get it. Not that Prost isn't a good place to get beer, aside from the beer, it just seems a bit overdone and at the same time a bit phony. I am by no means the authoritative source of knowledge on all things German, but anyone with more than a superficial tourist-y trip through Germany under their belt will likely agree with at least portion of what I have to say. I chuckled to myself how hard they were pushing the fact that their tables and benches are from the Oktoberfest. Seriously? It's a tippy folding bench. It's something to sit on. At least this is something I could still laugh at and I could appreciate the extra effort they made to have that "authentic" feel. The feel of falling on your ass when someone at your table drinks one beer too many and tips the bench over. The food is no laughing matter. The food is where any claim to authenticity flies out the door. It's a travesty to call it "German food". -Any one who has lived in Germany can attest to the quality of bread. When you get the cold cut platter here, it is served with what they call "Landbrot". Nothing against Landbrot, a good Landbrot is a solid choice for bread. However, this particular bread was stale and was missing the chewy center that a bread like this is supposed to have. Serving stale bread is a bad sign, German food or not. Their choice of cheese is also questionable. -Cooking a Currywurst with a Weißwurst. This just so wrong on so many levels. You don't fry a Weißwurst and you certainly don't make it into a so-called "Currywurst". You boil it, pull the skin off and dip it in sweet mustard. Conversely, you don't make a Currywurst with a Weißwurst. The Currywurst is made from different kinds of sausage, but never a Weißwurst. A pork Brühwurst or a Bratwurst but not a damn Weißwurst. I could get over the fact that they're trying to pass this off as "Currywurst" IF it tasted good. But the taste and the texture of the veal Weißwurst just doesn't go with the Curry. The Ketchup and the Curry and Ketchup overpower the delicate taste of the Weißwurst. Not to mention eating the Weißwurst with the skin is just weird. Whoever decided making Currywurst with Weißwurst is okay and is feeding this awful contraption to Portlanders, and thereby affronting the good name of the Currywurst, should be slapped and kicked. -Where the fuck is the butter? If I'm getting stuff like bread and pretzels in what is trying to pass itself off as "German", then I damn well expect that I will get butter to go along with it. Having to ask is already idiotic, and not having any to bring out promptly is just cheeky. Auf Deutsch: Frechheit. Die reinste Frechheit. I can appreciate the convenience of going out for beer and food. But when the food is mediocre at best and mostly a joke, I'm sure as hell not going to pay $6 for a beer that I could enjoy at home with a properly cooked and properly served German meal. If you're willing to travel a bit, there are better places around town to get authentic German food. Those are places where you won't have to deal with a half-assed menu slapped together to be a cheap and easy way to con suckers. If you like the food here, I'm not saying you're wrong. Some people like going to Olive Garden for "Italian" food and Taco Bell for "Mexican" food; it's basically the same thing. "After spending much of his childhood visiting his family's farm in Buseck-Beuern, Germany, Chris decided that Portland needed to experience German bier the way it should be served." prostportland.com Chris was likely very drunk the majority of his time in Germany and didn't get off the farm much. There is no way he could have been sober and have this stuff fly over his head.

GREAT Beer... takes me home to the Fatherland ... Germany you ask? No.. Philly!! This place has a great selection of German beer that is usually hard to find in one place in Portland, and that's one of the (few) things I miss about Philly. Super nice staff of the young, nubile, and blonde type.. if that's your thing.( and it's mine ) Great location.. not a huge fan of boiled sausage, but they're allowing people to bring food in from the cart pod next door, which is very neighborly of them.

Irate, inebriated Duck and Beaver fans were the primary contestants the night I sampled Prost's wares. Civil War was in full swing and one (very drunk) dude paraded around the bar carrying a full-size stuffed beaver. Either he's an ardent fan or a dirty pervert... It was windy and fiery cold outside, but inside was warm and friendly. I dug the decor and the long wooden tables felt just like Germany. The beer, hoppy and hoppy, came out for our crew in a stunning variety of pint glasses in all shapes and sizes. Not sure why that stuck with me, but it did. You aren't sifting through a long menu at Prost. How do pretzels, sausage or sauerkraut sound? What's that, you want soup? WRONG. How about kraut in a bowl, is that close enough? I had a great sausage with some tangy kraut and very much enjoyed it. A few people had pretzels and weren't overly impressed. Unless you like sausage, eating beforehand (perhaps across the street at Monsoon Thai?) is a good plan. All in all, a worthwhile stop at the tail end of Mississippi Avenue.

The beer is OK. Stay away from the food (get some from the carts). The best feature is the outside seating area.

  • Mike A.

The selection is... predictable. There's nothing I haven't had before which was a little disappointing. The prices are a bit steep. The food is hardly worth mentioning, which is okay because it's a bar. The crowd is, well maybe a crusty misanthrope shouldn't hold forth on his opinion of the crowd. I'm sure they're fine Americans. I will be back to Prost in the summer when you can drink on the patio and get food from the carts next door. Prost is a micro-chain with two locations in Seattle.

Great beer! Great knowledgeable bartender! Great patio! Small menu, which is fine as the food carts are just a few feet away. Can't wait to sip a beer on their patio this summer. btw. They can even recommend a beer to go with rhubarb pie.

Like this German brewery. Tasted one of their pale ales and it was good. I want to go back and sample more of their cervezas. What stood out for me was hoe knowledgeable the waitress was about the beers, PROPS to her. She allowed us to sample beers before buying but watch out they run out of their beers so get there early.

Good German leaning beer list. They take their glasses/steins pretty seriously. Grab some food cart food and sit on a bench. Generally nice people.

My husband and I met some friends here before a show at Mississippi Studios. We've been meaning to check this place out, as we love german food and beer. It met our expectations for sure. We both got the bratwurst plate, and our table ordered a variety of german beers. I got the Spaten Oktoberfest, which was malty and delicious with a beautiful dark golden color. The brat plates were awesome...came with a healthy pile of sauerkraut, a boiled brat, two different kinds of mustard, a pickle, and some german style bread. It was super tasty. My only critique might be that they could throw the sausage on the grill for a couple of minutes to brown/crisp it up a bit, but that probably isn't authentically german! The mustards were great, as was the kraut. We also shared a pretzel on the side, which was doughy, salty, and delicious. The atmosphere was pretty authentic to a german drinking hall, but 1/20 the size. It was cozy, with big wooden tables and dim lights. Service was very attentive and friendly.

I love German beer and as such, this is one of my favorite places in Portland. The last time me and the Mrs. were there the place got even better. I was not crazy about the food they offered due to the small size of their kitchen. Proust now lets you bring in food from the trucks parked next to it. I had the ramen and she had tofu and we both had awesome beer. Go here, especially if it is a nice day.

  • Matt P.

Meh. German beer is especially fantastic when paired with German food. Too bad this place didn't build a kitchen when they put it up!!! Brats and Wursts sitting in warm water on the counter, pre-made pretzels in a basket and 1 counter top oven. The sauerkraut was great, other than that you can get a better brat at Altengartz. Go for the beer, but get some food at the carts outside.

So anyone that knows me knows that I would not be the biggest fan of this place. I like my beer like I like my women, cheap. Offering harder to find German beers is a niche market and I am not there target audience. At $5-6 per beer per liter I am out. Also this place feels too upscale for me to feel like hunkering down for an evening. The flip side is that the bartender was super ridiculously nice. I would never go here on my own but I would go back if someone else insisted and probably have a really nice time.

Love coming to Prost! My favorite thing to do is sit on the patio on a sunny day with a pint and they allow you to purchase food from the food cart pod and bring it onto the patio so even if you aren't craving German food, this is still a great place to hang out. The German food is good by the way so give it a try.

DISCLAIMER: My 5 star review is solely based on beer. I am yet to try the food (other than the pretzel, which was.. not worth $4). So, this is the only restaurant on Mississippi that actually offers a big screen TV. Apparently, it is now setting a trend because they have been PACKED since they started airing the baseball/football/whatever-game-you-want-to-see. They also have darts, which is fun while you are sober. Scary when drunk because there is a door right next to the board that people are always scampering in and out of. Ok, but the beer. The beer is fabulous and I am not (or wasn't) even a beer fan until recently. The beer I sampled (sorry, I had a liter so I can't recall the name) was described as being nutty with a strong banana undertone. Holy shit. Delicious banana creamy foamy headed giant freaking beer. You can also order Das Boot! You have to be with at least two friends to order one of these bad boys, though. They are around 2.5 liters (around 9 beers?) and the tradition is that pass it friend to friend and never let the monster touch the table. Oh yeah - the liter was $9.50. A liter is a little over 2 pints. The perfect sized glass to last you a round or two of darts.

Have you seen Beerfest? Yes? Well, remember the scenes where the guys drink out of a glass boot? Das Boot? They have those at this place! It tripped me out when I walked into Prost and saw a table full of people passing this boot around. For a moment I felt like I stepped into the movie minus the rowdiness. Good German biers, cool backyard patio, and friendly service. I really enjoyed real German hefeweizen - it's so light and refreshing with a hint of fruitiness.

Went on a Wednesday night, arrived about 7pm and all of the tables were in use, both inside and out. Lucky for me, some friends had snagged a table on the patio and it was easy to add more folk as they arrived. Eventually my party grew to about 30, we were sprinkled around, standing, chatting, and snagging seating as it opened up. Most of us stuck with the many beer selections, and were for the most part satisfied with our choices. The food selection is very German, I noticed a lot of ladies ordering exactly what I did, a $4 Handmade Pretzel and a $4 Gerkin Salad (sliced cucumbers with a creamy dill dressing.) There were lots of Bratwurst sandwiches consumed as well as some good looking pork chops. The staff was super nice, although definitely over worked. At one point the kitchen was way backed up but it never took too long. It is a a great place to hang with friends, I ended up staying till nearly 1am so it must be an okay place.

I sat here after ordering cart food from the Mississippi food cart pod. I will admit to drinking three (3!) pints of their delicious Oktoberfest beer while eating my not-as-delicious food. The service was great - the waitress checked in on us frequently, and when my dining companion didn't seem to be enjoying her beer as much as I was (as evidenced by the fact that I had finished mine and she was only about 1/3 of the way done with hers), the waitress offered to replace it with something more to her liking. I would like to go back again & try a few more of the beers & maybe even delve into their food.

PROST is a cool new German bar that serves traditional German food and has 10 taps of German beer served in the appropriate glassware. The building and the bar itself were well done with beautiful wood tables and bar. I like the fact that you can bring in food from the surrounding food carts if you order a beer from them. This is really unique for a bar/restaurant to offer. Since the place just opened they are still getting a hang of things as the service was a little slow, but I look forward to going back soon and upgrading my review. Oh yeah and don't forget to try their tasty and crispy pretzels. Tip: If you decide to go there often make sure to get a punch card that when filled entitles you to free swag. They have free wifi and you can watch sporting events on their flat screen tv that is over the bar.

Typical German style pub. Great place to hangout for a chill night when it's warm enough to sit outside on the patio. Didnt' personaly get to experience the beer served in a boot, but the parties that had it were definitely enjoying themselves.

Great atmosphere. And though I haven't explored the whole menu, the smoked pork tenderloin was phenomenal. It came with excellent sauerkraut and mustard (yes, mustard can be excellent, and this was!) They also allow you to sit on the terrace and order drinks from them, and food from the nearby carts. We tried the mexican cart, and wished we had stuck with the menu at Prost. But I have heard that some of the other nearby carts are pretty good.

Dull had two bears the bartender was a jerk cutting everyone of myfriends off. Don't waste you time music was top hits from summer in December and beer sucked they don't have nitro infusion like edgefield in troutdale. Left with a taste of badly carbonated beer in mouth. I will never go back over priced bad beer and service.

My goodness! Talk about good beer selection, ESPECIALLY during October first. I love, love, love PROST! The vibe is relaxed. There are community tables, and a very cool, well sized patio. Their servers are beautiful and so nice! Get a pretzel, get a pretzel sandwich, get a bratwurst.. their food is delicious as well. I can't wait to go back!

Such a cool spot! Great for BEER! They have sooo many different types and so many kinda of glasses. It's great because you can get the regular size a medium size or afull boot! how fun. They have q little bit of room on the inside and a lot of room outside (which is great in the summer time) You drink like Germans so you all sit at different tables together. There are two bars, 1 inside and 1 outside. And there are also people walking around taking your order, so that's super helpful if you're small like me and have a hard time getting through to the bar. they do have a bouncer at the door so that's nice that he kinds of keeps things calm during the day time they open their back gate so that you can walk into the food cart area, you're not allowed to walk down with your alcohol but you can certainly bring food up from there!

I am beery pleased with this bar. For those of you into rewards, you're given a punch card upon request. Slowly but surely, I'm working my way towards permanent placement in beer drinking history. Reliable sources have informed me Germans not only know how to have a good time, but also make THE BEST beer. I haven't visited Germany yet, so I can't can't speak for the culture, but I must agree about the beer. I'm really happy to have found a location serving a variety of such quality brew. They appear to have a decent menu, thus far I've tried the Bavarian pretzel. I can't keep quiet about the mustard. I wish they sold it, so, if anyone with connections to Prost management reads this -- please convince the mustard wizard to sell his stash. I will more than likely continue to select this establishment as my occasional weekend watering hole. PROST! NUROC!

I really like the servers, the food and atmosphere. The bartender was super easy going and didn't mind getting us water, even bringing it to our table... But man... Their utensils are dirty... And not in the good way... It's like when you have a one night stand with a co-worker, then find out a week later he also hooked up with a girl nicknamed The Clap Carole... Yea... That kind of dirty

Definitely very hip and fun place to bring a group of people. All the German beers were poured so perfectly in a mug with foam on top with sizes like .3L, .5L, and 1L. We ordered the pretzel which was also delicious but small. I'll have to come back and try more beers!

Great beer, great vibe, but not too much food variety and surrounded by a heinous cloud of cigarette smoke on the deck. If you're a smoker wanting a beer on the great patio, it's totally your place.

So we generally love this place, but today...not so much. Sitting for about an hour or so and enjoying our beers, waitress comes up and said" do you mind sitting somewhere else so a group of three could sit in our spot. Tables all over with just two and we weren't sitting at a table, but a pub table. Yikes, what do you do?...say no and come across like a jerk? What a terrible waitress. Guess we could have said no, but what a bad spot to put your customer :(

We were really looking forward to eating & drinking at this place. But, the waitress didn't like that we wanted to move a bench to our table, other patrons were sitting as singles at the other larger tables, so there was no where for our group of 5 to sit together. The waitress was incredibly unhelpful, offering no suggestions. So, we left & will never come back.

German stye beers in big German style glassware. Light beers here were my favorites. Really good service and lots of outdoor seating.

Prosts easy-cute European package on a slow street corner on Mississippi is impossible to resist with its mature old brick building of new old school. The quiet new clean bar feels ironically homey and lived in. I sauntered in a bit blurry eyed from multiple drinks elsewhere seeking food. The late night menu offered a noveau German mix of pretzels and bratwurst. I took a glass of Rose for a decent price and a brat in curry sauce - it filled my pores with some Ortsgemeinde radiant licht und beam. Bald headed bartender was swift, attentive like the surly friend whose got your back and maybe only nice to you. Prost - you'll say it if you come here. And you should come here for a laid back evening of brats and drinks mit alle deine Stammtisch Freunden. Es schmeckt gut Von Anfung zu Ende. Yeah - Prost. Open late with an abbreviated late night menu every day. * One of the few place in this area of NEPO with late grub. Patio

I had my worst Bratwurst in my life from an impolite and rude waitress! The bratwurst was hard to cut and swallow. You can't separate the skin from the meat which means it has nothing to do with bratwurst. I shared my opinion with the "nice" waitress and she just walked away. I will never come back and I can't recommend the place at all.

I'm shocked I've never written a review for PROST. This is my go-to-local-bar. +They've got an assortment of delicious german beers at reasonable prices. They also offer hard A if that's your thing. +The inside is cozy and reminds me of a rustic cabin when winter sets in. They've got a dart board and one TV above the bar. They've got a few larger tables, great for making new friends as you join and a moderate sized bar. In the summertime they open up the doors and folks flock to the outside patio. You can lounge in the sun or find a place in the shade. They've got a bar outside as well and it's a dog friendly lounge area so its not uncommon to see a pooch or two. During the cooler nights they've got two space heaters near the covered bar area outside. There's also a TV outside behind the bar if you're interested in watching a game. +Food - I love the pretzel here, it's soft and melts in your mouth. I also find the cucumber salad refreshing and have enjoyed the spicy brats. The added bonus is you can purchase food from any of the on-site food carts or the Thai restaurant across the street and eat it at Prost while you enjoy there beer and atmosphere. +Location -- this is a great spot to start the night, to finish the night or to hang out ALL night. It's located on the happening Mississippi strip not far from a variety of food options, bars, music venues, shopping, etc. Parking can be a struggle on extremely busy weekend nights but nothing compared to NW or Downtown Pearl parking! And it's still FREE. +Rewards - drink beer (lots of beer) and they give you a punch card. You can work your way up to your very own barstool if that's your thing. +Da Boot - this place is known for it infamous BOOT, you hand over your credit card where they place a $50 deposit for the glass-ware and filler up. The rules of Da Boot is it can not be sat down, someone must always have a hand on it and you go around drinking it amongst friends. Good thing alcohol kills germs (right!). It's a fun experience to share with friends, I always recommend having 4 people but I'm kind of a light weight. If you haven't visited Prost, add it to your to-do list you won't be sorry.

Actually came here last Friday, but wanted to focus on my German date rather than type away on Yelp review :) He figured this was the perfect spot, and I couldn't have agreed more. I liked the communal seating arrangement and wooden table/desk for rustic feel. Ironically, it was quite a diverse population and my date seemed to be of only German origin lol But it showed how well this place is loved by everyone. I normally don't consume alcohol, but "banana beer" sounded intriguing. It was not hoppy and very light - loved it! First beer I liked aside from Ruby from McMin. Salad was tangy sweet with just the right amount of vinegar and sugar, all using fresh ingredients. Caramelized walnut was a plus! I tried sample of bratwurst sausage and mashed potato which was different than typical butter & salt only so it's been eye opening experience for me. I hope to return for another round and freshly baked pretzel.

Prost rocks! What a great atmosphere with the best, fresh from the tap German beer, fantastically friendly waitresses, great pretzels and fun. The best is sitting outside in the beer garden, people watching, socializing, and listening to good rock music. I am impressed.

The ambience and the beer of this place are fine, but it really is too bad that the staff here are genuinely rude and pretentious. I don't understand why, but I've been here enough to get the same bad experiences over the past year.

  • Kevin K.

This is the worst experience I've ever had in the service industry, ever. First of all, let me just say that I rarely write bad reviews on yelp and when I do, it's all about the service. We ordered drinks and of course received the wrong ones. Then we ordered the curry-wurst which was VERY undercooked and didn't have nearly as much curry ketchup as an "authentic" German one. I guess you could say it was the curry-WORST...ha. But honestly, things happen and we get that. The easiest way to make our experience. Better is good customer service. I've NEVER been more insulted or disrespected by staff anywhere in portland. The girl with short hair kept pushing my girlfriend out of the way. If she wanted her out of the way, ask. Simple And plain. Then when my girlfriend asked her politely to stop bumping into us she proceeded to get nasty with us. This place was the biggest disappointment. So for that we say, NO WAY Prost, find a better staff to work there that knows beer and knows how to be polite and courteous to customers. What a joke!!!!

Great spot, cool crowd, great German beers. What more could you ask for! Love the garage doors too, creates a really great indoor/outdoor vibe. My husband loved the collection of German glasses and 'Boots.' This place was packed on a saturday! I got to try a Dunkel and it was really tasty and it was served in a stein which was awesome and authentic. We came here after a pizza dinner at Lovely's Fifty-Fifty and it was just a short walk up the street. Perfect for an after dinner drink at a real German beer joint. Prices were reasonable. We didn't have food so I can't speak to that, but the beers were sure tasty.

I absolutely love this place. Great selection of German beers, excellent choice of serving sizes with great prices. I'd be here every week if it wasn't so far from my house. The food and drinks is German themed, and I love the outside seating area. A simple and quick review for this place that definitely deserves a visit. Now, quit reading reviews and just go get a boot beer.

Prost is lots of fun. They have an awesome selection of german beers and tasty food. It's a fun atmosphere and when it gets sunny out this place gets packed. I've always had awesome, attentive service. And who doesn't love a punch card? Get a beverage here or at Stammtish and they'll stamp away.

  • Cori W.

I've only been to Prost twice and both times it was for the same person's bday a year apart. I do love me some German beer but the atmosphere here leaves a lot to be desired. This is not the place to go on the weekends if you are not a fan of crowds or have a big group. The beer has always been great but something about waiting in line while the place swarms around you and bro dudes high five while passing around DAS BOOT isn't my cup of tea. Check out Stammtisch for some peace of mind German beer drinking.

If you're in the mood for german beer this place has more than a few. If you're in the mood for german food they can also acommodate. It's a nice place to toss back a few pints, catch a fußbal game. Very comfy atmosphere. Wood everything. Don't come here if you don't like hefeweizen. Or weiss bier. Or bros. Last night must have been an off night as there were only 3 bros total, and the misfits was playing. It was pretty chill actually. I had a currywurst. It was kind of meh. But most german food is like that anyway imo.

Love this place but last weekend we learned they no longer serve our favorite beer. Sat outside but quickly discovered the awful septic smell that we learned had scared off others before us. Couldn't smell it from other tables, but whoa was it bad at the first one! I've also learned that one should not order a margarita at a German bar. Blech. My bad.

NOM NOM NOM NOM finally BEER I CAN DRINK. yes, it is true. I don't care for this craft beer phase that has hit America, namely Portland so hard in recent years. I am an absolute freak for German-style beers, though, and by god does this place have those in spades. Great setup, AMAZING beer, good prices, and good food. The only thing lacking, like many if not all Portland establishments, is good and friendly service....but just have another beer and you'll forget about the slow and snotty waiter.

  • Darren B.

One of the best selections of German beers in town, friendly staff, and a great patio. Plus a good selection of food carts just off the deck...with a covered eating area. One of my favorite places on N Mississippi!

  • Kathleen S.

This place was interesting. Supposedly in the summer it's an Awesome place to go at night. It borders up to food carts and when it is warm opens the gate so you can bring food in. We went on a Saturday night and the vibe was a little too "uck" for me. A lot of crossfit dudes in the corner completely groping on girls that could barely walk. Some douche bags outside with overwhelming strawberry kiwi vape. And not your usual vape either, it was like these nerds were walking around with their own personal fog machines. I can see this getting more stars in another night though.

I'm an out of towner, but as far as I can tell both times i've been to this place its nothing but good times and still somehow has a European charm to is with its "beer-garden-y" patio. It's easy to come here and meet new kiddos, the dogs are allowed, the service is impeccable (even today when the US played Germany in the world cup and the crowds were shoulder to shoulder, my beer glass was never empty before the bartender/server grabbed me a new one) Mad props to this place. If I lived in beautiful Portlandia, this would be my spot.

As a native east coaster, I've never seen anything quite like the 2 liter boot beer! Like a mfing soda! Hands down 5 stars for an awesome craft beer list and the biggest single serve beer I've ever seen!

Prost is certainly the "Cheers" of Portland. Everybody is welcome there, even our four legged friends. I prefer to sit outside on the patio, where the bartenders and customers engage with each other. And I'm loving the Beet Salad and Beer Cheese soup, these days. Prost to Prost!

  • David P.

Pros: Great beer, check out the Dunkel Weisse. It's one of my favorite beers of all time, their other beers on tap are pretty solid too. Food is what you would expect from a German-themed bar: brats, pretzels, mustards, etc. Cons: Seating can be hard to find during busy hours.

  • Adama S.

This was a horrible place! My boyfriend and I (who have both been to Germany) came with the intention of having an amazing beer garden experience. Instead we ordered and first my beer order was wrong. And then we ordered a pretzel and currywurst that came and were extremely mediocre and plain disgusting. After some time we were talking to our friends and literally 10 times the waitress kept knocking me out of the way and accused me of being in her path. Seriously the worst customer service ever. At first I was going to let this place slide because I don't give bad reviews but I can not feel right about myself and not tell other customers.

Rolled in the establishment on a Thursday night around 7pm and it was packed. My friend and I sat at some bar stools near the back door, with a beer, waiting for the rest of our party to come. One of our Canadian friend came shortly after. Apparently, they don't take Canadian IDs and asked for her passport. It pretty common for tourist and travelers to carry their passports around but if you in a residency program and live in the States for the year--I doubt you would have it on you. The waitress told her she couldn't be in the bar so she just left. Five more people came and we stood around the area by the backdoor, which we were inconveniently in the way until a table opened up. They didn't have a huge selection for food, but my friends seem to enjoy their beer selection. The 2-liter glass boot got passed around. Tip: You have to drink it with the boot turned to the side, if the foot is vertically up...expect a cascade of beer to fall on your face. It's a good place to chill with your friends. It's a little noisy so difficult to hear if you are trying to have a conversation. Good place to unwind after work. It's unfortunate that they don't have staff that could recognize Canadian IDs.

Shitty service.....ok atmosphere. ....good pretzel. ...went there last night for a friends going away party....party was good but the waitress took my drink order and NEVER came back until an hour or so later ...sucks because they insisted on my credit card when i placed a 6 dollar order????really...wtf..i would have left but i needed my credit card back....I will never return ....plenty of other places to go in Portland. Ashame because the pretzel was good but 6 bucks not that good. And again the service sucked so ruined the whole experience.

  • Tess H.

I'm only giving this three stars because the servers were incredibly polite, German beer is the best in the world, and the bier cheese soup was fantastic. The bad: Pretzels were NOT Bavarian style (hugely disappointing), menu was incredibly limited, and the atmosphere was one of the worst I've experienced. It was sweltering, congested, and the bar itself is very small. I felt almost claustrophobic. If I never end up going back, I won't wind up out of sorts.

What a disappointment! I had high hopes for Prost as I've been getting more and more interested in German culture lately. On the positive side, I like how the owners definitely respect German culture and beer customs, as evidenced in their adherence to serving beers in appropriate glasses. But still, the service of Prost left a bad taste in my mouth. The service was not very friendly or accommodating. When we got there, one guy in our party (me) was 20 years old, and could not legally sit inside the bar room. That's totally fine, I understand that the law is the law. But I'm just as much a customer as everyone else and the woman explaining this to me could've been nicer. Plus, I spent more money on my food than my friends spent on their beer, so I was generating just as much revenue as anyone else over 21. As a result, we had to sit on the patio, which was nice, but seating was kind of limited though. Also, when the four of us we were moving to the patio, a waiter got pretty short with us, saying we couldn't bring the menus with us. How unnecessary! Just say it nicely and don't freak out, they're just menus! Service was also slow in terms of getting and ringing up the check, and I think my water glass was refilled once. Come on, guy! Even though I didn't get any beer, I ordered a decent amount of food. I got the pretzel and the currywurst. The pretzel was interesting. It was more like a bread in the shape of a pretzel than a traditional dense pretzel, with a crispy exterior and very yeasty soft inside. In spite of its strangeness, it was definitely tasty and the mustards on the side were good. The currywurst has potential and could be very good but it falls short in a couple ways. First, they used weisswurst which apparently isn't authentic according to my German friends, but that didn't bother me. The sausage was tasty but not very hot. Nor was the currywurst sauce drizzled on top. There could have definitely been more of it and it could have been served fresher and hotter. But for $7 it was okay. Please, put some freakin' frieten on the menu! They're the classic currywurst accompaniment.

  • Dan S.

Solid southern German food, and a great selection of the beers that I miss so much! I really want them to up their game vis-a-vis their obatzda, but maybe I just got a mediocre batch. BRB going back to find out...

  • Nick H.

I got the Oktoberfest Beer and a Pretzel. The beer was good and the price was fair ($5 for about a pint), so I'd like to try others. The Pretzel was just ok. My biggest disappointment was that the pictures I kept seeing made it look like a standard beer came in a huge stein, but it turned out you had to buy the stein separately. And to add to that, they served the beer in a trashy plastic cup, not even the self respect for a glass, which really got me doubting their true authenticity. (Maybe the owners simply realize most of the clients are preppy idiots with money to fritter, so good German marketing to the locals!) I'd only come back during off hours for a casual beer, because the way this place gets crowded it really isn't worth it. This place seems too hyped up to be as jam packed as it normally is when I've walked by.

  • Connor B.

Great place for beer. Great selection and good prices. Fun environment for enjoying German beer. Both service and food are very disappointing. Servers seemed to be lost and distracted. Wieners and sandwiches weren't very good at all. For beer, great. For food, nope.

  • Matt F.

This is my regular bar. Great selection of German beers on tap and they are often changing, though there are a good amount of staples that they always have. The food is decent for not even having a kitchen, but you can bring in food from the carts in the back as long as you order a drink, which is awesome. For good german food try their sister restaurant Stammtisch in NE. The back patio is great on a warm sunny day, but also has heaters in the back when its cold. The patio even has a bar and TV which is nice. I've always found the service to be awesome, even when its crowded. They also do a punch card for every 50 beers you drink you get a prize. It can get crowded on weekend nights as there is limited seating inside, but thats the only bad thing I can say.

  • Emily M.

Loved this bar. As a German gal I was thrilled to see authentic German food and beers. We had a blast having a few beers and snacks (pretzel, beer cheese soup, and beet salad). Wish that we lived here so that I could work on my beer punch card to earn my own stool! Good thing I already have some lederhosen, although with all that beer drinking don't know if they would still fit!

We had a great time hanging out here. The beers are on the more expensive side and the food was just okay. We really like this place because of the outdoor seating and atmosphere and less for the beers and food.

  • Vanessa G.

Not welcoming. Not warm. Not friendly. I am a football fan(soccer) and they claim to be a bar that features football but they are not. Too self conscious and the worst of what happens when "hipster" takes over. The barmaid was pleasant enough but wouldn't put sound on a EPL game because they don't do sound for anything but Timbers game. Fine except there were only two of us in the bar at noon and we were drinking and watching the game! Pass. .Big time.

Always a winner. This is the Bavarian Beer Haven. Pluses, Genuine German beer served the proper way, outdoor tables Minuses, Gets packed, acoustics make it difficult to hear conversations, family friendly--can prevent you from letting it all hangout (curse words, etc.) Summertime is killer on the patio. Excellent for out-of towners and all beer lovers. Check out their other restaurants: Interurban and I think one other

Vegans in a German pub? Heck yes... At least for the delicious beer. What I love about this place is that you can order any thing you'd like from the food carts, and bring it into Prost! to enjoy a delicious beer with your meal. Being that there isn't much for us to eat here, our go to is always Homegrown smoker and then straight over here for a beer with our food. Everyone has always treated us kindly here and the service is great...even when they are packed. Monica has served us a few times and she always kicks ass with customer service. We adore her and the rest of the staff we've dealt with. Love that there is always such a different group of people here, and always some cute dogs on the patio outside. Keep up the amazing work people of Prost!

    (5)
  • Nikole F.

We absolutely love Prost! The only complaint would be that they allow smoking on the patio. There is always the one person who decides to blow smoke everywhere and ruin it for the other 98% of the customers. The service and beer are excellent though!

  • Debbie L.

Our last stop on a day long excursion through Portland last week and it was delicious! MIssing Germany, this pub was a perfect reminder of the beer and delicious hearty food we long for. The pretzel was perfect and soft on the inside and so chewy and good on the outside! I also had a bowl of soup that I believe was some sort of jalapeño, cheeze and beer chowder. The bowl was so large I had to share which was fine and the soup was very tasty and just spicy enough. We will check out the patio this summer and love that it is attached to a small food cart area where you can enjoy many different types of food as well. Great neighborhood and area... will def return with friends and family!

Love this place! Reminds me so much of my travels to Germany. We came here for a another visit around 7pm on a Friday. It was medium-busy, so we ordered some beer and waited for a seat. After about 15 minutes, a table opened up and we ordered some food. I tried the bratwurst sandwich and it was good! I would have just liked a little more sauce, other than that, tasty & pretty cheap too ($7?)! Pro: Large portions of German beer on the cheap (e.g. 1/2 L. for $5) Delicious house-made pretzels Cozy/European atmosphere Con: So tiny! We almost always have trouble finding a place to sit! I don't mind sharing with people at little bench, but no one ever seems to want to share with me. Haha, oh well.

Great beer, lousy service. Waitresses were very rude not to mention one was basically arguing with customers.. The waitress Monica insulted my group with rude comments. "I'll treat you with good customer service, when you respect me" When I expressed to her it was my birthday and you're ruining our good time, she gave no care and continued arguing. We asked for the check and my group of 15 left. Needless to say, we won't be back

Pretzel sandwich! Amazing. Hadn't been here before, was delighted to get a pretzel sandwich that tasted like it was from heaven itself! Good beer, fun menu. The sauerkraut and potato salad wasn't really to my liking. But loved that sandwich.

I'd been looking forward to checking this place out ever since we first moved to Portland some months ago. We finally found ourselves in the neighborhood, so we gave it a try. The waitstaff was friendly. The seating was great. The beer selection is fairly limited, but still wider than it might have been for being a Germancentric joint. My real gripe with Prost is their food. We ordered a pretzel, a Brotzeit Teller (assorted deli meats and cheeses), and a bratwurst sandwich. The pretzel was fine, but nothing exciting. The bratwurst tasted very much like your run-of-the-mill Hillshire Farms kielbasa. The Brotzeit Teller was pretty bad. Well, maybe not -bad- per se, but definitely half-assed. The meat was fine, but the cheese was flavorless pre-sliced grocery store flat Muenster and cheddar. The pickles were your standard neon-yellow store-bought crinkle-cut pickles. In a town like Portland, where you can get great cheeses and pickles, there's no excuse for serving what could easily have all been Kroger brand fare. The whole experience seemed very inauthentic to me. Like some cheap imitation of German food. My advice? Go for a beer, but absolutely skip their food.

Prost is always a good time, and a spot that is both conducive to the summer days and the rainy winter nights. In the summer, you can get a pint or bigger with some friends and hang out on the patio for as long as you like, granted you can find a seat. In the winter you can feast on bavarian pretzel while also drinking plenty of beer in the cozy confines of a pub. Another nice thing about Prost is its proximity to other Mississippi haunts. Since the menu doesn't lend itself to a full meal, start at Prost and wander down the street for some amazingly good food.

Variety of German beer and food. Bavarian pretzel. Mmmm This is a much younger version of Gustav's in the NE. It can get pretty rowdy in here. Good German sausages, pretzels and lots of beer. If in the neighborhood ...

  • Rex M.

I thought this place was cool then they ripped me off and wouldn't do anything about it. I gave them a 50$ bill on a busy night and realized shortly after that they only gave me 10$ change instead of 40$. I called and said what happened and they didn't offer me anything at all. Not that I could prove it in court because it was a cash transaction but it was their fault and they didn't own up to their mistake. Maybe they don't know how to count or haven't seen a 50$ bill before. Either way I would have expected them to do something, anything, to make up for this costly mistake that hurts a loyal customer. Get your customer service in line Prost! You've lost a customer!

Wow. I lived in this neighborhood 5 years ago, & loved it. As soon as I rolled back through on a visit, I noticed a horde of idiot frat boys at the corner of Mississippi & Skidmore. Thought I'd walk through just to marvel at the spectacle. Talking to my old friends in the neighborhood, I heard accounts of the week this awful place opened. In one fell swoop, the neighborhood was made a douchebag infested ruin. They talk of this place as a rats nest that has tainted the entire neighborhood with screaming, chanting, puking idiots from the suburbs. There should be a law. Went there & had a "bier" with a few friends to confirm. And yes, bros guzzling from 64 oz. boots whilst they loudtalk at your head. Fab.

This place has a great selection of German-style beers (not surprisingly) which makes me happy as their beer is more in my flavor-profile than the typical PNW hop-bombs. The interior is small but quirky and filled with character (not to mention beer steins). The patio area is adjacent to a courtyard of food carts. Awesome that they allow you to take food cart grub and eat on their patio, as long as you buy a drink or two. Tough decision, huh!! The patio is surrounded by lovely flower beds and there is a cool outside bar area. Our server was awesome; friendly and laid-back. We ordered: Spaten Optimator (a bit heavy to start off with, but had a good malty depth) Franziskaner Weissbier Leicht - Recommended! Smooth with light banana notes. Ayinger Leichte Brau-Weisse - good We loved the atmosphere and vibe here, plus the range of beers. Add to that the food choices from the food cart area next door, we know we'll be back.

Love the atmosphere of this bar. The pretzel sandwich is amazing and so is the beer cheese soup.

Came here to watch Germany play in the world cup. This place is AWESOME!!! Great bar, great food, great atmosphere. Awesome beer selection- what more can a person ask for?

PROST PROS: Cool German Pub with plenty of options on tap, outdoor seating area, OK prices, friendly service, good overall crowd. CONS: You need 5 people to order "DAS BOOT" say whaaaaaa!? I should have done my due dilegence and read more of the reivews surrounding this....oh well. No biggie. What do you do when there is only 2 of you and can't order a boot? Order the next largest stein the size of one's head and chug away! They are $9.50 each which seems slightly spendy but is likely equivelent of 2 beers anyways. Can't believe I had never been before! I will be back...oh yes....I will be back.

A totally fun place that I'm glad I finally came to. I look forward to visiting more often. The crowd on a Friday night wasn't too big. The vibe of the entire place is great. There is an indoor and outdoor option which is perfect for those summer nights. Noise level is great, you're not shouting to be heard but the surrounding chatter makes great atmosphere. Friends ordered a Boot but I just stuck to a 0.3 L of something I forget now. We also ordered a Bavarian pretzel and Pate plate. Both were very, very good. I would totally recommend Prost for a laid back but awesome night out. A great place to blow steam with friends after a long day/week.

Thought this place was pretty cool! I love beer and will basically try any type. They have a lot German beers here which is great. Trying an actual German hefeweizen was pretty sweet. I took my girlfriend here and she really enjoyed it. They have all kinds of German beers on tap. The atmosphere and location are ideal as well. It's walking distance from a few other bars and there's lots of seating there. Great place to go with friends on a Friday or Saturday night.

Great, great spot to watch the World Cup. I was traveling on my book tour (my book is Double Happiness, coming of age in China memoir, doublehappy.be ). I needed a good spot to watch the World Cup. Obviously this is very German, and it has suitably great beers, great food, great people. We need one of these in the Bay Area. Speisekammer is close ;-)

I've been a fan of the beers served at Prost my last couple of visits, but I finally ate there. DAMN! Their food is freaking amazing. I had some sort of pork chop with a gigantic mount of sauerkraut and 2 kinds of mustard. Everyone else at the table really liked their food, too. Apparently the food is as good as the beer here!

As German as German beer halls in Portland come. The motif, beer hall decor and wood burning stove were a nice touch. Seems to be pretty popular with the locals judging by how packed it gets. The beer I ordered came in a heavy glass mug that would fare well in a bar fight, so I felt pretty protected. But the beer selection was ok, but not unique. 3 stars for theme, 1 star for beer options.

Stopped in for a couple beers before dinner. Good variety of German beers on tap and many bottled German/American choices as well as a full bar. We had a fresh pretzel with cheese and mustard for a snack...came out piping hot and the spicy mustard was delish! Great atmosphere. Right next to a food cart lot so if you aren't into German food there's a ton of other choices!

As a 3rd generation German-American who has never been to Germany, I like to think that this place is what all Biergarters are like in Deutschland. Since Germany has well over a thousand breweries, and they also turn out over 5,000 beers as a country, Prost! has done a great job deciding which beers to feature on draught and in bottles. Each draft beer comes poured in it's appropriate glass (or stein, or glass drinking boot, if you wish), and all of the selections are excellent. The most important thing to take note of is that no one should come here just expecting to have a good beer and hang out with friends. If you like great German food, sausage in particular, come here with an appetite. The menu selections are outstanding. And if you don't eat meat, have a pretzel, damn it! I highly recommend the pretzel sandwich, a fresh Neumann's pretzel roll served with Cervelat and Jagdwurst, cheddar cheese, romaine lettuce, onions and stone ground mustard. Unless you've been to Germany or live there, this is a sandwich the likes of which you've never had. If you're like my family, and you think most German food sucks, this sandwich might make you rethink your idea of what good German food should taste like. For all of us who appreciate it, thanks for bringing Germany to Portland.

Pretzels are better if you go to a German bakery. Theirs are good but very unauthentic for being called Bavarian pretzels. Beer on tap is good though. I didn't eat anything else so I can't vouch for the rest of the menu.

5 star German pub ambiance, beer selection, & AWESOME service! I swung by yesterday to watch the Timber's season opener and neglected to notice beforehand that the Blazers had a game going right up to Timbers start time so they had quite a few people in the pub. Our servers ALWAYS had a smile and as soon as my stein was even 1/2 consumed they were over to check to see if I need anything-- YEP,during the game great service. (Who knew that was possible here in Portland?!?!) I am taking off 1 star just for personal preference. I'd have loved to sit outside and view the larger unobstructed TV for the game, but outside being outside, there were lots of smokers out there and that's just gross also bathrooms are unisex and you know what that means; boys watching sports + unisex bathrooms= yuckfest. That being said awesome outside bar, covered area, heaters and large TV. The pretzel was splendid.

If you've been to Germany, you know how authentic this place is. Not just the beer, but the food. Yep, German food kinda sucks unless you like grissly wieners, kraut and pretzles and Prost! serves up the legit stuff (fortunately, if it isn't too late at night there are a bunch of food carts literally feet away and Prost! will let you bring in the food). Lousy food, but AMAZING German beer.

I travelled to Portland from Sacramento, CA for the Bayern Munich v. MLS All Stars match the past week. My goal while I was there was to also find a great German themed bar that wasn't too trendy. Sure enough, Prost was everything I hoped for and even more! The atmosphere was welcoming and mellow, yet buzzing with conversations. The bartenders were very helpful with recommendations. I narrowed my selection down to the Spaten Lager and Pretzel sandwich and could not have been happier with my choice! Prices were reasonable, staff was extremely friendly, and atmosphere was welcoming. Will definitely make Prost a regular stop when I'm visiting Portland!

I love this place. I studied abroad in Munich and I miss it terribly. This place feels like home. I especially love the patio area. Their beer selection is great too and the staff is always on their A game no matter how full the place gets, and it does get pretty full!

This place can be fun and they have good food and a lot of beer to choose from. It is always crowded which can be exhausting and is usually a line for the bathroom. Good location and friendly atmosphere.

Just a quick update. I'm planning on going back into Prost after the owner reached out via email and apologized for the situation. For me, that says a lot about a place and definitely want to give Prost another try. After the good reviews I've read, and recommendations, I have to think I'm on the right track here. More to come....

I love the concept of this place and they have great customer service. The bartenders don't seem to get annoyed when I have no idea what I want and ask for suggestions. That being said, I do wish they had a bigger, more obvious menu with descriptions or something. The past few times I have been here I wasn't even really aware of the food they had, it just didn't seem that prominent. Which I guess is fine- not what they are meant to be known for. But on my last visit some people next to me ordered food and it looked GOOD!

My first visit to a beer garden was in Munich as a 19year old. I instantly fell in love with the quality beers and communal picnic tables. There's nothing quite like sipping on a cold brew on a hot sunny day. Anyway, every time I stop by at Prost, I feel like I'm at a biergarten in Munich again. Maybe it's nostalgic for me, but I think they have the best beer garden in all of portland.

  • Jessica K.

Some place that is a little different than the average Portland pub. This place is a must stop if you are in the area. On a sunny evening you can hang out on the deck with a brat and a beer that won't take you out in one fell swoop and still be good to go home and mow the lawn, grill more food, (insert task that requires most of your mental faculties and coordination), etc. Tap list is decent mix of about a dozen European beers with a rotating tap, Franziskaner is my favorite. The food is okay but nothing to rave about but does go well with the beer. If the food carts are open you can always snag something other than pretzels and sausage and eat it on the deck. Ah and the boot. Yes, you can order your beer in a boot if you wish. This will likely end with you yelling Prost! and raising your boot to anyone within earshot, but it's okay because everyone else is doing it as well. I have yet to drink out of the boot. It's on my to do list. That would require my game face which I definitely left back at Amnesia earlier that evening. Next time I go I'm drinking out of the boot. Prost!

GREAT Beer, good staff, and good food - I usually nosh on the pretzel sandwich or just a pretzel - but it really is all tasty. And if you're not in the mood for German food, just head out back to the array of food carts! Always a good time, a great place to sit, relax and enjoy great conversation with old friends and new friends!

A wonderful array of German beers! I really enjoyed this place. Every time I've been here its been jammed packed and they have a really cool outside seating area to enjoy on the few nice weather evenings we have here in Oregon. I haven't tried the food so my review is solely based on the beer and atmosphere. Next time I'm gonna have to try the pretzel and the DAS-BOOT!

Prost is exactly what I love is a pub, great staff, great beer, good snacks, great deck and it's always hopping. A bunch of my buddies, definitely not "bros" or frat boys, are regulars and have been for many years. Since when I get a hall pass I tend to head over the staff welcomes me as they do my friends. I've been approx 10 times since we moved back to PDX in 2013 and it is great huddling near the heaters during the cold months or basking in the sun while cutting out on work drinking beer and eating prezels. Honestly I have only eaten light snacks here, any actual meals I've brought in from the food court - which frankly is super cool of them. The beer, fantastic. I forgot how much I love German beer. Each time I come I try a dfferent beer for the evening; have yet to have one I disliked. Again, the staff is great. Super friendly and helpful. Even when it is super busy they are very attentive. Love Oktoberfest here too. Perfect place for an early happy hour. Think I'll go this Friday.

I don't know if I should really review this place because I didn't actually get to order anything here. I was really excited to go to this place, we came from Vancouver Canada and I'm German so when a different bartender from the night before suggested this place and it was walking distance from where we were staying I was super stoked. However, we got there and when we were ID'd we were told we needed our passports to be there. Now, we had never heard of the many pieces of our Canadian ID being 'not valid' nor had any of the other local bartenders on the Mississippi strip or people that we talked to. A few years ago you didn't even need a passport to cross the border, so what then?! It wasn't the waitresses fault, but we were pretty pissed. We went down the street and spent our money elsewhere. I should mention we are in our late 20s, well within legal drinking age. So BEWARE Canadians and other international visitors!! Don't come here unless you bring your passport. No other bar had this problem, and even the girl that IDd us down the street said she saw more BC Canada IDs than a lot of other state IDs and we laughed at getting the boot out of Prost.

B-D-B stop #2. Time for delicious German beer? Yeahhhhh! (said with a German accent... "Ja!") We came for the patio and to imbibe cool alcoholic beverages. Check and check. My initial order was a misstep, as I didn't read 'faske' and think, "Oh. Flask. Like, as in a bottle." My bad. Also, what I ordered was not in the least Germanic, so my Prost adventure started with a bottled Strongbow. Ah, well. At least it was properly chilled and refreshing. Next, I opted for the beer I should have ordered to begin with, the Hofbrau Helles Lager. Crisp and deliciousoussss. Our whole group had a great time. The waitress was great and kept a watchful eye on the level of our drinks. Good times. Oh, and there was an adorable puppy on the patio - Bonus!

This is definitely a public man cave. You know... men wanting that dark wood, das boot showcased, Deutschland themed and dart throwing escape? I walked in smelling Germany, the good part. Tables filled with men and sprinkles of women. But I love it! It's like Anchor Mans "I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany" ... Except the German version. And it's beer and weinerschnitzel instead of leather. The staff made me feel like I'd be invited behind the bar into their "home". Not that kind of "behind the bar" ... I just re-read that and I'm withdrawing any hint at gutter minded innuendos. But like you've met your long lost friend or neighbor handing you a beer and sausage (also no innuendo). Alright. So a great list of biers and drafts to discover. "Erdinger Dunlap Weisse" A dark wheat beer. The nose was sweet with a tinge of citrus, the middle was rich and the finish oh-so-smooth. "Bitburger Pilsner" is crisp, clean and oh-so-tasty. No one has been disappointed with their orders. Curry weisswurst wasn't cooked very solid. It was cooked but uncomfortably squishy. Tasted good but -eh- squishy. And not going to lie. Curry and Germans don't hold hands in my recipie book. Really great atmosphere and staff. Added perk... the crowd this joint attracts are all low key happy people. So come here, drink a bier that you've never tried, eat the pretzel thing that is apparently amazing and write a buzzed review to tell us your experience as I just did ^_^

The bier hier flows like der Rhine. How refreshing to quaff down lagers from Germany. On draft!!! The litre was a little too much for me.I love the bock bier. Brats, light rye, sauerkraut, and cucumber salad dominate the menu. I will tell you now.....I received the best service I could ever ask for. Very prompt and respectful. The crowd was raucous at times while watching overhead screen. Schone freulein frequented the scene. Drinkers of all ages . Even outside food is allowed. Cool.

Having been in both Germany and Austria for extended periods, I could see Prost being one of those places I run to when I'm feeling "homesick" (oder heimwehkrank)--just grab my old copy of German poems and run to Prost for a Halb Liter and some Brezeln. My last time in was with an old Austrian friend from college and her boyfriend. It was a busy evening and the weather was cool so the bar was packed full! I had my favorite: Weißwurst paired with a sweet mustard. Yum. I took a look (and a bite) around our group and each dish plucked at my heartstrings. The cooks know their sausage--and the sauerkraut was perfectly tart. My only qualm is that the seating at the restaurant isn't the most convenient, as I saw many men and women crawling up and over or in some cases under our long table to get out to the rest of the restaurant--there were also a good few people sitting on very tall stools at short tables as there wasn't enough proportionate seating to go around. I would definitely suggest Prost to others--just make sure you're ready to be very Bavarian and ask to share a table with others, as there isn't much in the ways of room a lot of the time!

My boyfriend took me here the other day for lunch and I can't wait to go back. We had the pretzel sandwich, the bratwurst sandwhich, and the Brotzeit Teller. Everything was delicious!! The staff was super nice. After we ordered, the waitress came back and told us that the oven had broken suddenly, but that the manager would be right over to fix it and if they couldn't she would let us know. Sure enough, the manager came through the door a couple of minutes later and the waitress then informed us that it was fixed. I would love to go to this place again when the weather is nice because they have a large outdoor patio. Like I said, I can't wait to go back and try some more of their food!

Prost is our favorite place to relax with wonderfully delicious beers (bier) and friendly bartenders. There are a plethora of beers on the menu as well as quite a few not listed. We always have the same 2 bartenders and they not only know their beers, but they have come to know us enough to recommend different ones we may enjoy. My personal favorites are the 2 "banana beers" with each on and off the menu, but those aren't for everyone. The Bitburger Pilsner is fantastic...every time. They also usually have some great music playing in the background. They know their stuff! Drink here and be merry.

In many ways, this is one of the best run businesses in Portland. Great energy, incredible, friendly service. Every restaurant owner should bring their staff to understand how great experiences can be created. Pretty simple business concept, exceptional execution. Great experience on every visit. Wish others could capture this magic.

I used to love this place. But today I gave my card to an incompetent waitress to run a tab. When I went to cash out she told me she had cashed somebody else out with my card AND gave them the card. So I have no card, and no idea where it is. Their response? They're going to "retrain" the waitress. Meanwhile I have to cancel the card and spend HOURS changing all the automatic payments attached to the card. DO NOT GIVE YOUR CARD TO THESE PEOPLE TO RUN A TAB!! You will regret it.

***pretzel review only*** Nothing says German pretzel like Prost! This was The Germany bakery's version kicked up 20 notches with a chewy crumb, salt on the side served, and slight notes of lye. Delivered with squirts of hearty grain mustard and a sweet hot mustard, providing optimal dosages of nasal clearings. At $4, this fresh, slightly toothy knot gets high rankings. As a warning, I have gone to Prost! to find their pretzel sold out. Be there early, because they are good.

I approve. Went here for the Deutschland v Italia game, apparently this wasn't a novel idea- The place was packed! And despite this, the servers were incredibly attentive with beer/food being served quickly. The beer selection was nice, and my pick was out of this world (I can't remember what I got except that it had the world "dunkel" in it. One does not forget dunkel). Dark and smooth! Just like I like them!!! As one should expect at a German joint the food menu wasn't very vegetarian friendly, although I did see some pretzels that looked incredible. However, Prost opens up to a food cart pod and doesn't mind if you bring your purchases inside. Bonus points for that. Prost is in a great location and the the atmosphere inside is really nice. Lots of big TV's for sports watching, comfortable seating, and an outdoor deck that is really lovely. Great place!! Go and get your Deutsch on!

I gotta be honest. It's hard for me not to love a place that serves German beer out of a giant glass boot. I could drink Franziskaner Weissbier all day every day. But my drinking problem aside, Prost! is a beautifully well-rounded bar. There's a big TV to entertain the sports fans, a large biergarten outside for those brave enough to drink in the sun and even a big table inside to accommodate large parties. Their German beer selection is top-notch and ranges from lighter wheat beers to thick, dark German beers. I can't speak much to the food since German cuisine isn't really my cup of tea, but I can say that the soft pretzel that comes with two types of mustard is DELISH! My husband and I have a few favorite bartenders here, but really, the whole staff is really solid. None of that hipster snobbery that is all too common amongst bar staff in NE.

I can't help myself! I love this place soooo much! Especially now that it is summerish time! Doors open, cool breeze blowing in, amazing beers!!! And the food they have their is incredible. Get the damn pretzel!!! Don't think about it,,,do!!! They get busy, but they are not slacking, the bartenders are really working hard to meet the demand, and are usually always friendly, going against the usual Portland bartender smug. congrats! Go now, enjoy summer, have great beer. and trust me, on the pretzel!

If you like beer & bro's then this place delivers. Since I don't like either I won't be back. For what it is they do a great job. It's all about what you want in life isn't it. It's also great that you can eat cart food while drinking beer & hanging with your bro's... Or looking for new bro's as I feel this may be where bro's go to meet. They have a giant boot glass that you can get filled with beer & share with your buddies while watching sports. Like I said, not for me, but it is for many. So go. Meet a bro. Share a boot.

Salut! Skaal! L'Chaim! ...PROST! No matter the language, is there anything more satisfying than raising a big ole glass of fine brew, looking your friends in the eye, and saying, "Cheers!" after a long day of work, ready to unwind? Prost is a nice little place to grab a bier and a snack, and I could be wrong here, but it seems that every dude working there is a former Abercrombie model. The have a nice selection of bavarian biers and a handful of snacks (brats, pretzels, a cucumber salad), but not really a dinner spot. We stopped in on an especially frigid night last week and it was literally a warm welcome. Opening that front door, a blast of hot air sucked us in, and before I'd even removed all of my layers, we had menus and drinks on the way. Server was totally knowledgeable about the different brews. I opted for a beer that was described on the menu in some ridiculous fashion of having "notes of banana" or something like that, just because I had to try it to believe it. The description was true. Banana: that's what I call a beer? Will definitely check this place out again, and as soon as the weather warms up again, that patio will be packed, I'm sure. PROST! Oh, and they have a punch card system to work your way up to everything from free mugs to a barstool!

What can I say but this pub accepted me with open arms on Thanksgiving day. Got to Portland that day with no idea of what was in store for me and this awesome place was down the street and open. I had not had a true meal, much less a true Thanksgiving meal, yet that day. I walked into a huge surprise and this awesome free full on Thanksgiving dinner, a tradition they have had for 4 years now. The food and atmosphere was awesome. Even chatted it up with the owner and his wife that night and they are great people. They also were doing a charity donation drive for a local food bank and was more than happy to put in after walking into this greatness. Needless to say we ended up hanging here several times during our stay. On basics of the bar it has a great German beer selection, great food and an outside patio with a crap load of top rated food carts. I got nothing but great things to say about this place. I can't wait to visit again.

The only problems I have with this place is no happy hour and it's bro central besides that is a cool little joint with a nice patio next to a bunch of food carts. I think the owner realizes people don't only want to eat meat mustard and bread so they let you bring food in from the carts out back!

I went for lunch and didn't get a beer, but it looked like they had a pretty fantastic selection, which gives this place three stars. The fantastic decor also adds to the rating. The rating is a little on the low side, however, because the food was very meh. We got the soup (chicken tortilla, I believe- odd for a German place) and split a bratwurst. They were nothing to write home about and we didn't finish. The service was less than attentive and not very personable. I do want to go back again for a few late night beers, but I probably won't get the food.

Prost has great German food and drink. I stopped in for lunch on a Monday. The beer selection was great, and our server did an awesome job of getting me and my date psyched for the beers ("This is what they serve in the tent, in Munich, at Oktoberfest"). We also enjoyed a (gigantic) plate of pate, meat, cheeses, pickles and bread. Great cold weather food. My one gripe is that the outdoor patio was *covered* in yellow jackets. So was most of Portland during the time of year that we visited, but Prost was particularly buzzy.

I have to update my review simply because there are two things that have really come to shine about Prost over the past 2 years since I've written my review. 1. Das Boot: This 2-liter glass boot is a really fun way to drink beer with friends. The rule is that you can't put down Das Boot - it has to be passed from hand to hand. It's a little nerve wracking, since there's a $50 deposit on the boot itself, so if someone in your party drops it, well, you better hope it's not your card on the bar. You also have to be ready to swap spit with everyone in your party. Because that's what is gonna happen. But when you're among friends... 2. Cart food in Prost. Yes, they serve food, but they let you bring cart food from the Mississippi pod in if you want. You just have to buy all of your beverages from Prost (that means buy - don't be a douche and just roll in there and drink water, that's shitty). But seriously, I wasn't super impressed with their food (outside of the delicious pretzel) so it's crazy cool of them to let you get a Native Bowl or Big Egg sando and roll inside to quaff a beer or boozy bevvie while you chomp. Word up.

WOW! No really, WOW! What a great place. Beer is delicious and I love how it is served in proper German tradition. I love our Nortwest IPA's and such but what a great place for a change in taste. Food was quick and good, the pretzel is GREAT, and the Pretzel sandwich was equally good. The best part was the service. The staff was polite, funny, helpful and all around AMAZING. I will definitely recommend this place to anyone who loves beer and good service.

Prost on Mississippi celebrates the Great German Bier and Biergarden tradition. All of their draught and bottled beer selection is served in the traditional way and with the specifically designed glass to celebrate that tradition and to optimize the bier's flavor, Additionally they offer a limited food menu again prepared and served in the traditional German manner. Seating is German pub style throughout and the have recreated a bier garden along with an outside bar ...picnic style... On any evening that' even has decent weather...the patio is packed. And as I recall or at least at one time one could bring their selected food they purchased at the food trucks and carts next store to the picnic area,, this could be my own manifestation so just like wikipedia...you may want to validate. The bier selection is comprehensive from lagers ,weissbiers and schwarzbiers..(white and black)...and they offer a full bar. What makes Prost all the better it is based on the personal experiences of one of the owners who spent much time visiting his families' farm in Germany...check out the photos of his families' home town. Service is adequate...it may be coincidence but virtually every single time I have here I see the same 2 bartenders/servers....so I say adequate because the bar could easily be staffed with more people...it may be a space issue but I will say this, they are pouring loads of bier. So if you want a great experience , everything German sans buxom gals in dimdls ( think the St Pauli girl beer logo) I recommend this place...Prost!

Literally the perfect place on a sunny day with a group of friends. Get a boot (or 5), snag a picnic bench on the patio and bring your cards against humanity and you are in for a PERFECT afternoon.

I was in Portland visiting a few friends the other week and they dragged this kitty out to Prost - OH.MY.GOODNESS! Have you ever had beer in a boot? Well, have you?! If you live anywhere remotely near Portland and haven't been part of this phenomenon, I highly suggest you jump on the bandwagon. And not just boots of beer - it's boots of DELISH beer! The only caveats are that you're not allowed to put the boots down and you have to split it amongst at least two other friends. They have a great big seating area outside so you can enjoy the sun if it decides to come out to be enjoyed; the bathrooms leave a little much to be desired but hey, it's just a bathroom. Across the beer garden there are ample amounts of food trucks boasting all kinds of yummy treats. I will definitely be coming back here next time I'm in Portland!

German pub, refreshingly German. Beer selection is awesome, if you don't like beer I wouldn't really bother going. Food selection is limited, but very German and authentic. The meat and cheese board (or whatever it's called) is a tasty accomplice to a good beer. Atmosphere is reminiscent of a Munich pub.

The beer and food is great. However, the staff is rude. They don't seem to respect their customers. I would not recommend this place due to their poor customer service skills.

Great beer selection, friendly staff to help recommend which beer to imbibe on that fine day, as well as a great selection of soccer on TV. And did I mention the outdoor seating on a nice day is hard to beat. With some good food carts sitting just out back, you can day drink from open to close here. Well worth the trip from the west side.

YUM, i looove Prost beers, especially while eating from the food carts out back. Its just perfect.

  • Dana H.

WOW! What a great selection! I didn't eat here, but I did have a large selection of German beer in large accordingly labeled steins. I was really happy with the service and the selection. In addition, with the food carts right next door and the patio gate open, it's quite convenient to snag some tasty cart snacks without having to sacrafice the last of a HUGE beer! I will be returning, it's probable that this might happen quite frequently in fact.

I love that you can go here and get a food cart meal and then sit down for a drink. The lager I got (can't remember the name) was great with my giant bowl of pad thai from the cart nearby.

We were here for 3 hours on a Saturday afternoon and it was heavenly. The atmosphere was relaxing, beer was great, service was great. It started to get crowded around 5 and that's when we left. Will definitely return for another afternoon.

Extensive beer list, beer in a big glass boot, a fine selection of sausages and krauts - Need I go on??? This place really took me back to my Wisconsin roots. I haven't had a good sauerkraut in a long time and this place makes a mean sauerkraut that has a nice hint of beer flavor in it, like it should =) The one thing I was a little disappointed about was that I didn't see any schnitzel on the menu. A good German place always has schnitzel, in my opinion. Overall, nice place with a home feel to get a cold beer, good sauerkraut, an also a nice pretzel. Prost!

its ok. I think everything on Mississippi is way over priced and way over blown. Snobby staff when we were there. but what ever. Probably will not go back.

Prost lost my credit card after being thee for two hours on a Friday afternoon, with no excuse, but some advice: "You should probably call and cancel your card." Really? You probably should not have lost my card and ruined any chance of me getting any cash from my bank for the next 5-7 days, incompetent bartender.

Oleg H. and I arrived in Portland on Thanksgiving day. My buddy made us a delicious dinner, and after a short nap we walked over to Prost for 2nd Thanksgiving--because Prost is awesome and not only offers delicious beer in giant boot-shaped steins, but serves a completely FREE Thanksgiving dinner the day of. My buddy hadn't remembered to get pie but thankfully Prost did, and we indulged. Someday we will come back for the big beer.

Awesome summer time bar! Huge patio, great beer and food carts right next door. They serve their beers in a bunch of sizes so you can go as big or small as you want. I have never ordered the food, there isn't much on the menu that entices me, BUT they let you bring in food from the carts next door so if you aren't into german food you can pick from all the carts. Service has also been really great all of the times I have gone (both at the bar and at the patio).

  • Patrick S.

AWESOME! Very cool, sweet bartenders who are engaging in the conversation. Great beer selection. Out back there are about 7 food carts who make delicious meals you are allowed to bring in while you sip your pint. I highly suggest stopping by this place.

excellent beer selection and a prime time place for outdoor drinking warm or cold weather. they have heaters for outside when it's not summer. staff could be more friendly. but other than that, one of my favorites

Went here after a hike in WA and felt like I was back in Germany. Seriously, our big group was able to find 2 picnic benches and sat outside. Despite the larger size of our party, we were able to get our food and drinks quickly and had great service. I am not even a beer fan, but loved the drinks here and would recommend the beer and sausage over their wine any day. Delish. PROST!

Portland was the halfway stop between SF and Montana on our 2day roadie. Ill admit imma fan of the Germans and their beer drinking culture but anyone can go here and have a good time. So many differnt kinds of german brews to choose from and theyre served in half and full liter mugs like in Bavaria. They have Das Boot as we americans know it from beerfest. We managed to get three of them since we were "celebrating our friends bachelor party" $50 deposit for das boot, pass it around your group and celebrate. nice hybrid indoor-outdoor setting if its not raining. Ill be back prost, before i die.

Stopped in at Prost this weekend for a friend's birthday. It was a fun German bar! Threw back a few Hofbrau's and had a great time. Would definitely come back here to watch a game... need to try das boot next time!

I lived in Germany for a while, and while I love Portland beer, sometimes I want something different and I miss what I used to drink there. Too bad I arrived at Prost and then realized I must have lost my ID the night before. So I didn't actually end up with my own beer, but I stole a few sips (I am actually of age, ok?) of the Erdinger Dunkelweiss and was very very happy. I will definitely be back. I love that you can order beer by the liter. Some of the best nights I can't remember involved ordering beer by the liter. (Pro tip: Don't tell yourself you've only had three drinks when you've had three liters of beer. Don't follow up with vodka. Get to the bathroom before you start vomiting. If German teenagers who don't think you speak German start making fun of you, tell them you do in fact speak German and vomit on their shoes.)

The bf and I were out for a chilly bike ride with a friend yesterday and we decided to stop in and give the new place a try. I am not a fan of German beer, so I stuck with what I know which was a nice cold Cider. The barmaid brought me the bottle and a glass...Uhh the glass had so much dust covering it that I could write my name in it...gross, but o.k. I used the bf hat to wipe the glass out and carry on. We split a brat and a pretzel. The pretzel was great.I'm not a fan of brats...but hey I'm in a German beer haus...lol. The brat was good and I really liked the sauerkraut...normally I can't stand the stuff...scary part...the dish was chipped...seriously I don't know how that was missed. I got a little concerned about where that broken piece of crockery had ended up...my food maybe? I will be back when you wash the dishes better and toss the broken ones out.

I was SO excited to check this place out for eats/drink prior to heading over to Mississippi Studios for a show. The location is perfect, right in the center of the awesome Mississippi Marketplace with all the phenomenal new carts! It is just what I was hoping for: an authentic German experience in good old Portland! Having traveled through Germany a bit and attending Oktoberfest, I had high expectations. I was so happy to see that they nailed every aspect from the cozy, wood décor, to the perfectly chosen beer list (the Paulaner Oktoberfest was a nice treat), and a small menu of simple, traditional eats that are actually served at the real Oktoberfest (from plain bratwurst and pretzels, to a couple of more hearty dishes). The bratwurst was delicious, and I plan to go through the menu over my next visits! We met one of the owners, and he was a very friendly guy with a long bartending history. He was truly happy to just see everyone packing this place (and it was packed!) and he did a great job of working the crowd. What a treat this place is! This will be my new go-to bar without a doubt. It has great location, character, beers and food - what more could you want?

We stopped in as we were driving past because the place looked so darn cute and neighborhood-y from the outside. It was a cool drizzly day, but the bar was warm and friendly inside. JP leans more towards IPA beers (the hoppier the better) and I am more of a red wine fan, but we decided to give the German bier a try anyway. I have to say, Prost is totally enjoyable: really friendly service, bright comfortable interior, and look at that fantastic patio outside! North Portlanders will be enjoying themselves out there all season long as soon as the skies dry up a bit. As I said, I am not much of a beer snob, but my beer was cold, crisp, and clean tasting, and my hot pretzel was just delicious (I almost scorched off the inside of my nostrils with that spicy brown mustard though, consider yourself forewarned). JP had some of their soup du jour, which was a beef stew, and it was also really good and satisfying. The Mississippi Avenue food carts are right outside along the patio, so you can also get food there if pretzels and brats are not your thing. One thing was very clear: Prost has already become another popular neighborhood hangout on the Mississippi Ave strip.

Good beer! A friend of mine told me that you can bring food in from the carts right outside as long as you order a drink. On a hot day like today, that was perfect! Sushi and a nice light beer was the refreshing sensation I sought, all within a beautiful air conditioned setting. Good stuff. The menu does not cater to vegetarians but the food carts outside do. Ladies- they've got paper seat protectors for the toilets too.

cool room. great beers (though all the "rules" for ordering the boot are a bit over the top for a table full of adults...Yeah, I get it...I'm a grown-up, I won't break your precious boot) and the Herbst Whiskey is awesome.

This is my new favorite hangout and it's only blocks from my house! I don't have much experience with German beer but am quickly becoming a fan. Service is always super friendly and attentive and this place can get packed. Warm and cozy, love the big windows so I can see what's happening outside, good sausage but their sauerkraut is not my fave..but I'm a picky one in that category. I can buy a bier stein at a store for $15 probably but I'd rather fill up my punch cards here and work my way to my own personal stein Prost offers when you get how many punches? Way more fun! This is another great offering to the neighborhood and I plan on supporting their business for a long time.

Stopped in for a couple of .5 litres in fancy glasses. The sun was blazing and welcome on the large patio Saturday. The food court buzzed in the background as we sipped beer and ate some magic beans falafel sandwiches. An enjoyable stop with nice friendly service.

Excellent beer, German food and atmosphere. All brews are imported from Germany and poured in the appropriate glass. The patrons are in all age ranges which indicate to me a quality product. Quickly becoming a favorite of mine in PDX, which is rare for a bar without Microbrews.

we are entertaining guests from out of state and wanted them to experience prost. we began with dunkel pint, a pilsner, and a sailor jerry rum with pepsi. next we had the gurken salat with dill dressing. next we went to the food carts in the pod next door, and began with a camus crepe, at the crepe cart, tofu taco at koi fusion, a beef bulgoki burrito, and the last person had biscuits and gravy from the southern cart. all were tasty, and comforting on a cold day. the server was friendly, efficient, and we always love 1877 building with all the windows. love coming here....

If you like Bavarian brews this place is pretty cool. Not an extensive selection but decent main streams like Franz and Spaten. Had a nice Eisbock that was ok. Seating is just like the other Prosts all wood inside with picnic table style seating. There is an outdoor seating area that's pretty nice but it gets crowded. The people there were young and trendy types, not bad if you're into that type of thing. For the most part it's in a great neighborhood and it's a decent beer bar.

First of all I didn't have the food, just the brew. I'm definitely a fan, not a huge beer drinker but lo and behold quite like German beer. I had a yummy lager with banana essence or something like that in the description. Yum! This is great for a sunny day and I love how they let you bring in food from the carts next door (that have a ridiculously long wait). But drinking the beer makes it worthwhile.

have to give 5 stars here! i love good german beer and great german sausage and prost has them both. it doesnt hurt to have a couple of smokin hot barmaids, which they do! tried to go a couple times in the evening with friends but it was always so crowded we went elsewhere, had a weekday afternoon off, met a friend for lunch and could not have had a more pleasant beer experience. if you are a beer lover, you will likey!

Stopped by last night and spent a few hours watching a soccer game. The wifi router had to be set up for connect. Beers are great and all sizes (I mean up to massive boot size). Great snack. Feels like Germany! Great service. Fantastic deck with plants, picnic tables, its own bar, overhead canopy, deck TV screen, and garage door setting for sunny days.

The decor/renovations are truly stunning. As a lover of refinished historic architecture, I waited anxiously through the summer to see what sort of splendid business might add to the bustle of the street. The people that work there are nice enough, some more than others but it breaks my heart to say that I hate the energy of the place, mostly because it is now the closest bar to my house (I still trek down to Liberty Glass, just not when its icky outside). Being in Prost reminds me of why I was as far removed as possible from Greek life when I was in college. Meathead central. Don't get me wrong, good selection of beer, but being there made me feel like I was in the 'burbs in a bad way. I have been a couple of times in the evening and am thinking that it is better as an afternoon spot when the creepy frat boys that are too drunk to realize or care that they are pissing right in front of me, in the sidewalk aren't off work yet. The pretzels are a ripoff, but the sausage is good. I look forward to giving this place another shot because their arrangement with the food carts is commendable and I really like the back patio.

I really enjoyed my first time at Prost! The server was very helpful in helping me pick out a beer. I told her what I usually drink and she paired me with an exceptional beer! I was in a group of 6 so we got a little chaotic, but it is certainly the right place to let loose and have a great time!

Happy 4th! I showed up when the doors opened, greeted by Kim, got a table for 12+, nothing but amazing, fast, and friendly service from one of the sweetest gal we've ever met! Definitely recommended! If Kim is working on the patio, she will woo you with her uber friendly attitude!

First I would like to see L'Chaim to Prost. I should end my review there, but I won't. Prost was near the top of my list of places I had yet to go to in this fine city we call Portland. A friend called me up last night and asked if I wanted to go. Yes. Yes was the only answer I could come up with. I had not had a Hofbrau since I was in Germany for Oktoberfest back in 2002. Oh how I had missed you my 1 Liter Hofbrau Helles Lager. Served in the proper glass with the Hofbrau logo on it, the last time I had one of these, I walked out of the tent with the glass under my jacket. Don't judge me. Like I'm the only person who has ever stolen a glass in the history of Oktoberfest in Munich. I won't say Prost reminds me of Germany per se, but they certainly have the goods. So many German beers, so little money I have left in my wallet. This is not a place I could go to very often, but $9.50 for a liter of beer is actually not a bad price. It is almost the equivalent of 3 12oz beers. Plus this isn't beer you pound. Or at least not beer I pound. It is good sipping beer. I honestly can't wait to go back. I look forward to coming here in the summer when the weather is beautiful and the beers are flowing out on the patio. Man, that is a nice vision.

Echoing what Don said about the food carts.......how cool is it to have that diverse of a menu attached to a German pub??? We came by today for brunch at the Big Egg, only to discover the final of the Woman's World Cup game going on. No seats in Probst while we ate (Big Egg very good, BTW), but I hung around the outdoor bar with a a few of my newest friends...especially Zoie, the beer-drinking black lab. Being a freak about customer service, I would be completely remiss without saying how cool the staff was. The bar was paaaaacked during the game, but hardly ever did anyone pass me without making sure I didn't need a beer or something else. Once the game was over and we found a table, Emily was awesome for our small group!! I like Probst, I like the little food cart alcove there, and I liked the Mississippi area we discovered just south of there.....spending more time there soon!!!

Walking up Mississippi today looking for some non-hoppy beers and a food cart burger we hear the wailing of the damned, the incessant caterwauling of unclean spirits. Oh, wait, that's an accordion. Oh, fsck, Oktoberfest. Damn. We go in anyway and once again wrap ourselves in the warm, fuzzy embrace of the part of Germany that isn't Prussian militarism. There are faux Eurobags in leather shorts, fetish fuel Pauli girls and lots and lots of beer. I'm going to focus on the beer. In a world where the bittering wars have reduced the Portland area to a hop-ravaged wasteland, finding a spot where you can have a, well a freaking LITER of beer that won't make your tongue try to swallow itself is more than an oasis, it's a patch of heaven. The pseudoscience of each beer having its own glass* is easily ignored but has the solid benefit of the waitress not needing to ask what you've been drinking. The place is almost always crowded, and it's WAY noisy, even when you're not being subjected to the Deutsch Hee Haw (srsly, unless you're Weird Al you have no business with an accordion in public). It gets a bit fratty/woo girly at times but you won't mistake it for the Barracuda. There is one significant drawback, the kitchen is sorely limited. You're allowed to bring food in from the adjacent pod, if anything is open. But it's no thing to pound a few liters and stumble down Mississippi for some Thai. * yeah, the krauts swear by it, but they're into homeopathy as well, so....

Not sure how authentic this place is (haven't been to Germany yet)... but... Great selection of German biers, and bartenders are quite friendly!!! I really liked their Pretzel Sandwich, the sausages, and the sauerkraut (which is the best I've had so far). The only thing that I was a bit disappointed with is that Das Boot is only for parties of 3 or more... On my visit I was able to down 2 liters, PLUS a pretzel sandwich, AND the Landjaeger mit Brot... Would definitively go back for more quite soon...

Prost is a great german pub. Plenty of various german beers on tap. Ordering in .5L or 1L stiens are the way to go. If you're with a group of friends, you can order a 2L Boot, but be careful not to break it, as it's $50 to replace it. Friday and Saturday nights are very busy. The rest of the week, this pub makes for a great place to enjoy a delicious beer in a friendly, comfortable setting.

  • Chris M.

The servers here are really great, the german booze is expensive sooooo, don't make the same mistake is and leave the tab open for the whole night, my wallet had a nice fat bruise when it woke up the next morning. Go ahead and get a boot just to make it official, its worth it and you can get some sweet pictures! This is one of the "frattiest" bars in portland(The Gypsy will forever hold the title), not that thats a problem, just saying. One great thing about Prost!...an older crowd so the thirtysomething's (Portland's lost children) feel right at home here.

Beer (B) Service (S) Atmosphere (A) B= 5 (Great selection, great taste) S= 5 (Nice bartenders, knowledgeable, accommodating) A= 5 (The building is sweet, inside is comfortable, back porch rocks) One of the best experiences in Portland. The beer is great, the atmosphere is awesome, it's a one stop shop for a great time with a group of friends. Definitely go check out Prost. The only downside....only two solo-user bathrooms, and the lines can get long. But that is nothing in comparison to how great this place is. Go. Do it. Now!

  • Captain C.

All joking aside, this is the greatest place ever. The staff is SUPER friendly and knowledgeable of every beer, the fact that if you're not feeling German food, you can snag some food from the food carts right outside and bring it in, all the beer is DELICIOUS, and that a 1/2 liter only costs (generally) $5 where as a pint of beer will cost you $5 anywhere else. Greatest. Pub. Ever. In all honesty, they all deserve a raise since they not only deal with drunkards, but they make everyone of those drunkards feel welcomed and taken care of. Prost!

  • Wayne B.

OK, I love German beer and food, Prost has it going on. I just wish they could have a better lunch menu. Maybe the 11 food wagons next to them have something to do with it. Anyway supper time is great, a better menu. I'll still keep coming back.

I went here on Saturday night around 11pm. If you can fight through the wades of college guys carrying gigantic glass boots full of beer, and wedge yourself into a tiny space left by the dozens of hipster girls living up life, then you MAY be able to buy a beer here. I must say, I loved this bar when I looked it up online. When I arrived, I was a bit turned off more by the crowd than the bar itself. The bartenders were nice and obviously trying to rush through service. I ordered a pilsner and it was good, not fantastic but good. Then we immediately escaped to the outdoor patio. Here it would have been heaven, if we could have been able to ignore the large group of college students screaming at one another randomly. I got the feeling that this place get a lot of broken glasses, as the minute we set down an empty glass it was taken away. I wish I could have transported this bar away from the college people (and I am in my 20's mind you). It is a brilliant bar, but I cant do with the jostling jocks/hipster mix of people crammed into a sardine can.

Visiting Portland for the Women's Softball World Series, had heard of the amazing food carts on Mississippi, so a few of us headed there for breakfast and saw this cute little place called Prost! on the corner. After scarfing down our food, we noticed that we could take the food into Prost! and enjoy a beer, but didn't have much time because we had to rush to a game. A few of us ran in ordered a quick bloody mary, which was great, downed it, and said we need to come back here later! On our way out we noticed a laundry mat across the street. Later, the next day, we were all in need of some laundry for our stinky jerseys so we recommended that we head to the laundry mat by Prost! and drink some beers while we wait for our clothes. It was the perfect evening, great atmosphere, fun quotes on the walls, great beer, great glasses, and great brats! The pretzel was really good too! A must try spot if you are into brats, dogs, and beer!! Yell Prost!! a few times and the locals will certainly cheers with you. My new favorite word. Prost!

I could give this place anywhere between 2 and 4 stars depending on how much I weight the food in my score. At the risk of arguing by authority, it's worth noting that I lived in Munich for over a year. If you ignore the food at this place, you have a really awesome little beer garden and bar with a great selection of German beers. By that I don't just mean the brands you can find in any place that serves a German beer, but also some real gems that are much less common (Ayinger, for example, while not turbo-rare, is not that common to find and is one of my top 3 favorite Weissbiers). The atmosphere was charming and mostly accurate. It's a great place to sit outside and have some giant glasses of great German beers that you may not have seen at every other place you had a German beer. Unfortunately, the food was a travesty. I ordered the bratwurst roll/sandwich without fully reading the description on the menu. I figured "oh, it's a German place serving a bratwurst roll, I know what I'm going to get." Way off. What I expected was one of the classic, hard, German bread rolls, cut open wit ha brat inside, with some spicy, yellow, German mustard on it, and maybe (maybe) kraut. What I got was some kind of soft hoagie containing what seemed to be a Weisswurst which was covered with kraut (sure, I can dig it), not very spicy (but also not the classic Bavarian sweet) brown mustard (eh, ok), and curry ketchup (er, that doesn't really go with mustard and kraut but whatever). Now this sandwich would have probably been fine to eat albeit terribly unauthentic if not for the sausage. First off, as another reviewer commented, Weisswurst have a delicate flavor and are not supposed to be covered with kraut, mustard, and curry ketchup -- they should be eaten on their own with a little bit of Bavarian sweet mustard -- but that's minor compared to the second issue. The sausage still had the skin on. That would have been fine if it were a bratwurst like the menu said, but Weisswurst have very thick skins that I now know are extremely unappetizing to eat. I never learned that before, because every other time I've had one I've taken the skin off, because, you know, that's the thing that everyone that's ever eaten a single Weisswurst in Munich knows you're supposed to do. I mean, the sandwich was basically inedible with the skin still on this sausage. Aside from the simple physical difficulty in eating a sandwich where you can't bite through the sausage, it was also just really, really gross to be eating that skin. Halfway through I gave up and took the sausage out, skinned it, and put it back, and then things were better (I could actually eat it) but it was still iffy. Anyway, I was just visiting Portland for the weekend and I kind of regretted having the food at this place and taking precious stomach room away from the much better options in town. If this place didn't serve food at all, I would give them four or five stars. I've given bars with mediocre food five star reviews based on their drinks alone before, but those were bars with food that was ok and just not impressive (and still edible and decently tasty). Judging from what I had, this place falls way below that bar and has food that's just gross, random combinations of things that someone thinks are German.

I LOVE PROST!!! I moved to Portland a year ago from California. I know I know...I'm a transplant. Before you all get out your fiery pitchforks and try to run me back out of town, please take my newly planted butts advice and GO TO THIS PUB!!! The atmosphere is great, the food also great and the beir is even better!!!

Excellent selection of german beers, I love that they try and match the glass and the beer. Germany creates so many wonderful beers, this is a great concept. I love that it's super casual and doesn't have the cheesy oktoberfest feel that so many german eateries have.

I like this place for the actual german bier and the patio.

Good selection of on-tap Bavarian beers that you can drink a) by the liter b) in the sunshine c) with a plate full of brats and kraut, OR anything from the next-door cart pod. What more do you want from a german pub? Food is decent Bavarian beer hall grub. Nothing special. I wish they used Altengaartz sausages, Fressen bread, etc. Have not been late at night. For an afternoon or evening, this is one of my favorite drinking spots in PDX, and I wish it was along Division instead of a 45 minute bus ride away from me.

Make sure to turn the boot before the air bubble splashes beer all over you! Yes they have boots here, a good beer selection, a beer club that have some great prizes as you get up there, delicious German food, and some fun patrons and stuff. Plus if you really want to get in the spirit make sure to stop by for their Octoberfest celebration! Plus during nice weather there's a good patio and several surrounding food cards providing for some additional enjoyment and options.

I was excited to find a late-night place with character that stays open long enough for my husband and i to stop by after working Swing shift. The decor has character, the beer list is definitely German (a plus) and the bartender knows his stuff. The barkeep was able to tell my husband quite a bit about the beers they had in stock: which ones came from craft brewers, microbrewers etc. He also made a recommendation ready at hand after my husband ordered a brew that was temporarily out of stock. The food was delicious! I had the pretzel sandwich and my husband had the Curry Wurst. Probably not the most veg friendly menu as they feature a lot of sausage and didn't even have a green salad on the menu, but this carnivore isn't complaining. My other hangup was that the portion sizes were on the smaller side for dinner portions, but they were quite tasty parings for the beers we ordered. This is definitely a place we will visit again for a German pint or two and a light meal.

This place might be getting too many good reviews because it was simply packed when I was here and a lot of people couldn't get seating. Anyway the menu is pretty simple, you have you beer in various amounts, you have your food and you have a few cocktails listed. If you order the beer then it it comes in a glass marked with the brand of the beer that you ordered (cool) and if you get the food then expect a gut bomb because the portions looked huge. The staff was friendly, the spot was clean and they even have a frequent drinkers club with rewards for completed stamp cards should you need incentive to become an alcoholic.

Had a very positive vibe and experience here. It is definitely very German. Share a boot with some friends, but here's a pro-tip: don't set it down on the table. Bad juju.

I really wanted to like this place, I did. To start off we sat outside where all the chain smokers seem to sit. I thought Oregon restaurants were trying to stop the smoking frenzy, obviously not here. Next our server was rude. When we eventually wanted our check after waiting 15 minutes, I went to track her down. I simply said, "we're ready for our check whenever you are", and she replied "I"m not on anymore, sorry. Go find your server and have her take care of it." All right, as if I knew she changed with another server considering she was taking care of us the entire night! The beers had weird tastes to all of their heads, as if their carbonation system was screwed up. Our food was luke-warm and the pretzels were horrible! To all that say the pretzels are amazing, you need to learn how to cook true pretzels from scratch, because these are some of the worst I've had in a restaurant. Their bathroom was full of kegs, packed full of them, wtf? I guess Prost is too small for both an industrial sized kitchen and a place to store their empty kegs. We went on a Monday night and they were completely out of Spaten beer, again wtf? Not worth the drive, nor the money. My friends and I will not be back.

This place is fun. They've tons of German beers on tap with all the right glassware to match. I've never seen that many styles if mugs anywhere else in Portland. I only tried the pretzel, but it was damn good. They also have a pretty good spirit selection. I wouldn't mind trying thier brawtwurst too. The space is cozy but oddly large feeling, considering it's footprint is so small. The patio is huge, which will be very fun come summer.

Spaten. Optimator. Huge. A couple of them. mmmmmmm We had the cucumber salad, the meat & cheese plate (sans meat for the veg girl), the brat with kraut & the pretzel sandwich. All delish. Server at the bar was quite friendly. Not sure if they do this all the time but they had the doors open to the back/side and it brightened up the place with fresh Portland air.

Um, pretty much a favorite hangout. Excellent selection of many delicious German beers. Lots of German type "appetizers." The patio is a great place to hang out on sunny days, and if the wursts or braunschweiger aren't your thing (which is too bad) there's a great selection of tasty food carts located just off the patio, which you're welcomed to bring back inside. I love coming here with friends most any night, or afternoon for that matter, of the week.

I'm so glad this place has opened. Before, it was this nasty building, so big props to the owners for making this place feel like home. The bartenders have all been nice the 4 times I've been there and they have this punch card thing that has become my nemesis. First, there are 50 punches per card. 50! And in my experience, they will only punch for the drinks YOU consume, not the round you bought for your friends. After the first card is turned in, you get a golf tee. For 50 drinks! After you turn in two, you get a patch. It just goes on and on until eventually you get your own bar stool and then a customized jacket. Not sure if I'll ever get those elusive rewards but the patch is mine, godammit. I will drink myself into a coma over the next year to obtain a PROST! patch - one I will wear gladly.

I bike by here on my ride home from work, and every day, regardless of the time (ranging from noon to one in the morning), the place is packed. I went here once and couldn't help but find most of the people there to be a bit on the loud and annoying side of things. I may have been distracted by one group in particular downing glass boots of beer, shouting "chug, chug, chug" that just brought weird frat boy associations into my head. I think the place just seems a bit too representative of certain aspects I really dislike about Mississippi St, mainly its "stuff white people like" qualities. That being said, they do seem to have some cool beers on tap.

Ladies!!!! If you feel like getting harassed by douche-bag males, then this is the place for you! Just went to see a friend from Germany and was ready for a few good drinks and conversation but wow! I was not prepared for the level of female degradation I was to experience. In all of my years living here in Portland and in all of the neighborhoods I have been fortunate to have a good beer in, I have NEVER been treated like this... let alone have I ever experienced the bartender joining in! Usually the bartender is your ally in these circumstances, the person that tells those tools to get lost. NOT AT PROST. Forget common decency. FORGET IT. Oh yeah, and their toilets were swimming in piss, great work guys. You really give evolution a good name.

Having recently been in Germany, I was so happy to go to PROST and see how they truly honor German "Bier." The beer is poured with care, served in its proper glassware, and they offer true euro-sizing (0.3l, 0.5l, 1l, and the infamous boot). The building itself was beautifully restored and the interior has a warm German vibe without the kitsch typical of many "German" establishments here in the states. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable, though they were clearly still figuring out how to deal with a chock-full bar. I took one star away because the pretzel, though good, did not hold a candle to the pretzels in DE, and the curry-wurst was far from authentic. Minor issues because ultimately, my visit was about the beer. Fun fact: the tables and benches on the patio came direct from Oktoberfest '08 in Munich. Pretty cool. Grab some friends, go to PROST, grab yourselves a boot, and have a blast.

Confession: I'm a reformed beer nerd who has "reviewed" over a thousand beers. Now I only have a couple a week, and often get more excited over a super sessionable beer than the flavor of the week Double IPA. I think the older me might have not dug this place but this one does. Very pedestrian taplist, honestly, for a German-exclusive bierhall style place. That doesn't mean they aren't good, they are, but I wondered about the freshness of last year's Octoberfest. I was hoping for at least a Mahr's, Aecht, or Weihenstephaner, but no dice. More of the "German macros" (See why old me would have hated the place?). The bartender was great from what I could see, kept our glasses full, and dealt with an onslaught that did not look fun in the slightest. I'm always a sucker for proper glassware, so it was fun that everybody in our group had a different beer and a different shaped glass. As mentioned in previous reviews, a little too spendy, and I wasn't intrigued enough by the menu ($ ratio considered) to order anything. I'll be back though.

The beer was great and should be since it's a German bar, but I was disappointed with the food. First and foremost if you go to a bar that is supposed to be German focused, the food should be too. Mixing Indian flavors into German food should be outlawed. I am a sour kraut aficionado and the sour kraut at Prost is lacking that original timeless flavor... I don't want to taste curry in my kraut, keep it original.

What's not to love about a beer garden with lots of tasty German beers on tap and located in an awesome food pod? Prost is great for either a quick beer in between rain showers (they have heaters on the patio when it's cold out as well as a little tent to block the sprinkles) or a sunny afternoon of extended weekend drinking. If you're not going to eat at the foodcarts, I recommend trying their homemade pretzel and/or one of their sausages with sauerkraut. Any mouthful of German beer would be lonely without some mustard and salty goodness to help it make its way down the hatch, right? Prost!

It has been a long time since I have seen a great German Beer Stube. I would not suggest it if you are expecting a "Gustavs" experience because this place is much cooler. You are not going to get a refined meal, but if you are going to drink great German beers and have a good time, this place has got it. The food is what is to be expected, sausages, pork, pretzels, etc. But the atmosphere is great and the staff is awesome Additionally they have a card club that rewards you with T-shirts, etc. After your fourth card, they give you your own stein that they keep at the bar for you. It has been awhile since I have see a well done beer club.

Prost! $9 for a liter stein of amazing German beer. It's like Oktoberfest all year long. Great patio. It's right next to the food carts and they're totally cool with you eating food cart delights on their patio. Fun people. Great location. And they have Das Boot! OK - it's not the giant Das Boot I'm accustomed to because apparently Oregon law somehow prevents serving beers that large, but it is a boot.

My favorite bar in Portland. Prost! Great beer, also adjacent food cart pods are always a plus. Gets slammed on weekends so know and be patient. You can buy beer by the 2L.

Big selection of German beers on tap. They serve them in litre size glasses, so be prepared to feel good. There are many kinds of beers, each of them pretty tasty. I ordered something off the menu which was out, but I had a brautwurst that was decent. Service is pretty friendly. Setting is nice with an inside bar, and large patio bar as well.

eh..I dunno, the service was lackluster, I was disappointed that they didn't ask if we wanted curry ketchup on both things we ordered, both the weissewurst and currywurst were doused with curry ketchup which was very one dimensional. brats should always be grilled by the way, boiled then grilled. that being said, the sausage was well flavored, the casing had a nice crunch to it, loved the stone ground mustard, the bun was squishy. altogether the service was slow and seemed ultra focused on the regulars. I get what their doing with having only German beers, but in a town with so many excellent brewers that do a great job of German style beers? not giving homage made me shrug my shoulders and go eh. It's just not my style, it's trying too hard to be a neighborhood joint but doesn't have that cozy feeling to it. it was ok, I didn't love it, if someone wants to go I'll go but i won't seek it out.

This was my first experience in the Mississippi district! We walked the entire street then sat down for some brews! I enjoy all of the picnic tables and community style seating outdoors. Just like Austria and Germany! Although it's probably not all that common, I was happy to hear some German speakers. Fun atmosphere and good beer. Looking forward to going back!

Good spot for some good beer. They have plenty of German beer options and a full bar. I like coming here because it's not a typical bar with the same old same old bar food, cheeseburgers, fries, wings, salad. They have a variety of options here mostly different types of brats. This in itself is a reason to mix Prost into your general happy hour rotations. This place has a nice patio so when the weather is nice, it's an even better place to be. When the weather is not so nice, the inside is fairly small for a bar so it can be crowded.

Between the lively buzz, the attractive wooden deck, and the food carts, how could you NOT like this place? Ole Miss, you've come a loooooong way, baby. Just a few short blocks away I got mugged for my lunch/bus money as a kid (by grown-ass men! Men! I was 10, 12 years old. I hope it made them feel really tough).... I have to pinch myself a little bit, recalling that this is the same neighborhood. Though clearly imbued through and through with a hipster, trend-bot vibe, Prost is a fabulous spot, there's no denying it. The douche-baggenstance was somehow refreshingly subdued, I found. Hats off to the planners and investors in this ambitious little project. This is SO much cooler than Gustav's or Rheinlander, which have been hitherto the most visible representatives for Deutschland in Portland. With all the extra rental moolah they must be drawing in from the food carts, they must be "makin' it rain jah so schoen" Self-disclosure: I'm not the biggest fan of German food on the planet. Though I very much enjoyed traveling there, and love a good brat and beer, gotta say for ethnic foods, it just doesn't crack my top ten. That said, this is the second Germanic eatery I've been to so far in '12 (the other was Grüner), which is way ahead of the going rate of about once every ten years or so for me.... I stuck w/the appetizer menu, which was plenty good enough. Betwixt the brat sampler and the curry wurst, I didn't even have the gumption--let alone the space-- to polish off the big soft mustardy pretzel. The Beer flasks were a little spendy--- $6-8 per 12-16oz...... but it's great stuff! German beer hardly needs any introduction or high-falutin encomiums from me.... My only recommendation for the brilliant minds behind the curtains @ Prost: if you open (another, Deutsch-themed) restaurant, go with a FUN German name. Like Günther's. GÖÖÖÖÖÖÖÖNTHER's! Or better yet, HËLMÜT's. "Prost" is so stiff, so formal. Much too similar to Proust. I love classic, world lit--- but Proust, Lieber Gott! What a fargin' wind-bag. Do us all a favor and cut the next 500 pages of 'sickness with life' (Lebenskrankheit) navel-gazing and hand-wringing, and get to the friggin' POINT, man! When Tolstoy and Spenser (he of 'Faerie Queen' fame) complain about your verbosity, you know there's a problem. "Prost" is also too similar to "Faust", and again-- not only is von Goethe's version long-winded, it's in verse, just like Faerie Queen. Insufferable! Marlowe's original is so much better for its simplicity... (Regrets if the above is in any way utter blasphemy to you (blasphemische worte). I'm just another bozo w/a keyboard and an opinion, after all.....)

What a great little place. Upon entering, it was pretty full. But the bartender still made eye contact me and said hi. I met my group outside on the patio. It was huge! All the food carts were closed so I wasn't able to get anything from there...which turned out to be a good thing. I ordered the pretzel sandwich from the bar. Warm, toasty, melt in your mouth goodness, followed by another beer or two. Now how these kids can remember all the names of the German beers and the notes and hints is simply amazing. The beers are all served in the correct glass. The prices are great. Food is great. Servers are awesome. Even the customers were all nice. Definitely will be back.

We all have a "happy place" - a memory, thought or fantasy we retreat to when life is projectile vomiting slings and arrows our way. For some it might be a simple recollection of a sun soaked beach, a day out in the garden, or the smell of freshly baked cookies. For others it may be a more elaborate fantasy featuring transsexual latex clad midgets, jello shots and a 40 foot slip n' slide. For me, it's memories of Oktoberfest. When life gets complicated and I long for a reprieve I find myself thinking back to the excitement Oktoberfest. There I was in Munich with the TLB, fighting through the throngs at the opening parade as we lustfully watched the brew houses marching down the street, with their decorated horses pulling ornate wagons packed with copious quantities of beer in gigantic beer barrels. The crowd followed like mice to the pied piper, eagerly waiting for the clock to strike 12, the official start, when the first keg is tapped and a cry of "O'zapft is!" is heard across the tents. At Oktoberfest beer is not ordered by the pint; when you find a spot on a bench in one of the riotous beer houses, your first stein is a liter and you quickly learn to order another because the sheer quantity of revelers requires a little advanced planning. Once finished in the first tent, you realize you have just drunk a 2 liter bottle of beer, and not just any beer, something special brewed just for the occasion. The oomph-a bands play familiar songs designed to make you raise your glass and give a prost to nothing more then the fact that, yes you are in Munich, yes this is Oktoberfest, and yes you are in the midst of the biggest party in the world. After your first couple of rounds, you take the edge off with pretzels the size of your head and a handful of radishes as you watch beautiful blonde German girls wearing their best dirndl outfits, which seem to have been designed with the sole intention of pushing their soft breast up and out of their blouses...truly the perfect compliment to a day of drinking and debauchery. Moving on, you continue with your drinking and find time to enjoy the carnival rides and other revelers, your only concern is how long can I continue doing this, and why would I ever want to stop. The beer continues and you have blurry memories of the fun house, apple strudel, upside down pictures beneath the on looking statue of Bavaria and more drunk happy Germans then you ever thought were possible... Standing on top of tables, swinging your stein to the music, doing large powdery white lines of snuff off of your hand, you quickly make friends with people from all parts of the world, singing and drinking together as if you were long lost friends. For a beer drinking, debauchery fueled man...this is my happy place. This is where I retreat to. Which is why I was so happy to discover Prost. Granted, this small German bar doesn't have the no holds barred party atmosphere of Oktoberfest, nor are their cute blonde waitresses wearing boob accentuating outfits, but they do have a fantastic selection of German beers, which are served in authentic LITER STEINS. We sampled their meat and cheese plate, which was alright, but we were really there for the beer. Besides once you throw in a few hot pretzels, radishes and share a table with some equally imbibing strangers, if you close your eyes and let the beer take hold of you for a brief moment you just might think you are back in Munich and in your own personal happy place. Prost!

The bratwurst sandwich is a revelation. The sauerkraut is fresh and biodynamic. The mustard is spicy and pungent. The balance of flavors is exquisite and pairs nicely with any number of the available beers. Plus, they serve late and have free wifi!

The pros about Prost is that they have great beer and the place is classy and authentic. I don't really know how hard it is for them to get some of those beers (I'm guessing not terribly difficult) but they are really good and everyone likes having the specific glass that goes with that beer. The bar area is great with the TV and makes for a pleasant experience. The shitty thing is the beer is minimum $5 a pop, most are more. I would gladly go here more if the price wasn't so steap. I mean just 2 beers after tip costs at least $12. It's just not a place to overindulge in one night I guess. For now, I'll stick to $2 PBR at most other places.

I love Prost. If my boyfriend and I are ever in the Mississippi neighborhood and the baby is being looked after - we always come here. Last weekend we came to Prost with a ton of friends - many of whom were visiting from out of town. It was slamming busy but the bartenders (a guy and a gal with short hair) were extra nice when we ordered a Boot to share. When I explained I didn't really know what to order, girl bartender helped me choose from the vast selection of beers on tap by offering me samples. If you're in the mood for a busy bar and you want to impress your out of town friends, go to Prost. When the weather is nicer, we'll choose the patio which is awesome. And complete with heat lamps for those who can brave the cold. Amazing selection of German beers on Tap - not sure if there are other Nationalities available but everything I have had there has been great. We will definitely be back again and again and again.

Prost!! Love the place. This is without question the best german themed beer-garden/restaurant in the US. Being from Munich/Germany the only thing I've been missing has been an authentic beer-garden and Prost delivers. They not only have proper beer serving (using a "Mass" ie 1liter glasses) but also have a great selection of food. Their tables/benches are actually imported from the Octoberfest in Munich and the overall ambiance is very nice and the closest to beer-gardens in Munich. I do live in Boston but will consider traveling to Portland just for Prost ! :)

I have a good friend who is German. From West Berlin, to be exact. He is suspiciously tall (more on that in a minute). He likes Prost, and I drink there with him regularly. The atmosphere is fantastic on a warm summer evening, and the people watching is really first rate. My only problem is the tall German. You see, I'm not sure where he puts all that beer. He can drink copious amounts of the stuff and remain completely unfazed (and un-drunk). Meanwhile, I am a slobbering ingrate after 3 litres. I'm beginning to wonder whether that crafty German is smuggling beer out of there in a hidden reservoir somewhere. That, or perhaps the movie "Beerfest" is a documentary. We'll never know.

Prost! is amazing! I had the pleasure of going to Prost! while helping a friend move to Portland and, hands down, it is one of the coolest places I have ever been. Their food is amazing. I had the special (chicken salad) when I was there on the recommendation of the bartender (I am so glad I listened to her). I was amazed with the quality of food that this place turns out with the smallish 'kitchen' that they have. I also had a pretzel with mustard, which was out of this world. The beers, while unpronounceable for me, were great! When you are there, don't forget to get a punch card, and your punches, so that you can work your way towards earning a bar stool! :) Now, I am not a whiskey drinker but I tried their housemade shot (whiskey with spices) and it was great. If you have a chance, check it out. Last thing I am going to say is that the bartenders are super nice and helpful. And that Prost! is right next to a food cart pod! Who doesn't love food carts???? Check out Prost! it is awesome!

The beer was excellent, and sharing a giant boot full of it with the entire bar on a Monday night is a fond memory, if not an entirely good idea. Loved the outdoor area, and the servers, who were practically sitting with us by the end of the night. The lack of a dessert menu was a huge bummer though! It was a moment where I was desperate for anything with flour and sugar, and my craving went unfulfilled, much to my dismay. They allow outside food, but it was too late at that point. So, I just had to drink more beer! Pity!

Authentic German Fare. You can get bier by the liter. They do have smaller portions if you can't handle a liter. They serve all German bier and have the bier glasses or steins to match the bier you are drinking. Food there is good too, they have a verity of wurst as well as my favorite, curry wurst! If you are a beer fan this place is worth checking out. It can get a little crowded on Friday and Saturday evenings, but it has a good atmosphere. There is a large patio that connects to Mississippi Marketplace, it's a food cart location. Prost will let you purchase food from the food carts and bring it to their patio to consume. I think they may require you to purchase a drink though. The food carts close early. I showed up at right before 8 pm on a Friday night and all were already closed or in the process of shutting down. (Not a Prost problem I guess, but just throwing it out there) Not a big deal, the food at Prost is good. My only problem with this place is I love my bier and can easily put back 3 liters, if I throw back some brats and tip I'm looking at close to a $50 tab for just myself. Bier is about $10 per liter.

DAS BOOT DAS BOOT! Your typical rowdy crowded bar that could use an extra heat lamp outside and maybe a bathroom or two more, but otherwise a fun place to hang out with friends!

Stumbling onto this place was a humble surprise on a sunny Friday pub crawl. My friend that was with me loves German bier and German food. She was quite impressed with the selection of beers available and also the type of food offered on the menu. Gotta love Pretzels and Bier! Next to a small lot of food carts as well..... so there is options for food. Or walk down to the end of Mississippi for some Por Que No? Why not?

My girlfriend and I love this place. We try to always sit at the bar. Bartenders and guys doing the food are cool as can be. Great beer for $5 and good German snacks considering a limited menu and space. The smoking allowed on the patio warrants a 4 star instead of 5. Girl was smoking cloves last time we tried to sit outside. Not sure why they allow it.

Great patio to have a beer. Had food from the food trucks right next door . Kids welcome on patio too which was a bonus.

Great pub atmosphere with a nice outdoor space. Definitely a Pub with German beer not food. The food is a vague Americanized interpretation of German food. Family style seating is cozy and lets you get to know Mississippi District folks.

Did I ever tell you about the time last fall I stood at the bar and waited 10 minutes for the bartender to acknowledge me? Or minutes later, my back was turned with my friend facing me, when the waitress took the entire length of her foot and pushed on my calf and back of my knee to buckle it to get my attention to move? This without her saying a word to me or my friend to move. Lovely. Couldn't even tell you whether the drink or food was good because the customer service was so foul. Haven't gone back since, and have no reason to recommend it.

Prost is a really cool place. Genuine german beer and food. What really gives this place five star status is its location. It's a beer garden like place surrounded by a bunch of food trucks!! So you can get a couple of beers at Prost, then get some awesome food truck food outside, and then go back and drink more beer!

Great Chili. Excellent service. Delicious beers. Fantastic food. I have gone to Prost twice and have not been disappointed either time. The menu is small but what is offered is amazing, as a group we ordered and shared most of the menu. The people are attentive and personable, couldn't ask for better service. German beer, need I say more. I recommend Prost to everyone.

Finally made it to Prost for the first time last night for a friend's birthday celebration. I'm impressed! I used to live within walking distance of this place, and now that I know that it's a goodie, am a little sad that I moved away. I feel like a list today... -HUGE steins like one gets at Oktoberfest -I wasn't in the mood for beer, so ordered a whiskey soda, which was a little pricey but sti-i-i-iff so all's well that ends well there -nice decor, very cozy, mountainy, warmly-lit feel to the interior -the space is nestled right up next to the Mississippi food carts, and if you buy your bevs at Prost you can bring food in -nice outdoor patio that I'd like to check out next time -a friend got a big, fluffy, nommy-looking soft pretzel with two kinds of mustard and coarse salt, which looked awesome -nice bouncer that welcomed us in when we got there and wished us a good evening when we left -good-lookin' bar staff, both girls and boys (I know, call me shallow but it's a plus :) ) -nice mix of 20-through-50something crowd -everyone singing along to Rocket Man and waving their steins around Wow, that was a long one. To sum up, I'm going back, and you should too! I'd like to try this place on a weeknight...

Nice place. A little disappointed in the 80's/90's music instead of German though! Good brats, beer and kraut. Exactly what I needed from a German joint.

Really great deck space! All the beers are from germany. Atmosphere is great! There are many good bars on Mississippi but this one is my favorite. They have a loyalty card where you get punches for each beer and you can get rewards each time you fill up a card! They also let you bring food from the carts into the bar and the carts next to Prost are really good!

Really cool bar with HUGE reasonably priced drinks. I came with a party of 8 and we initially sat outside, but the staff was really accommodating with moving us inside when it got too cold. The liter beers are reasonably priced and next time I want to try DAS BOOT!!!!!

it's bier, not beer. Gosh, get it right. Although I haven't been around Portland too long, I think this is one of few places that actually serve German biers. They are delicious and if you want, you can get a liter of it to completely satisfy your alcohol cravings. The food is not that great; and I wished the nearby food carts were opened when I went there on a Tuesday night. Regardless, I will come back here when I feel like I want to be a German.

The Food: BEER! BOOT! and the german pub food is good too...I had the currywurst which is perfectly complimented by curry ketchup (those who know--know) and a german pretzel. Both were very good but the pretzel was excellent! Das Boot! serves at least two and you can't let it touch table...fun times! The Service: Good, friendly... The Atmosphere: Very laid back! patio surrounded by food carts-which you are welcome to buy from and bring back to your table.

I lived in Germany for 3 years and found this place while exploring Portland. Great authentic German bar/ restaurant. Staff was friendly and food tasted great. My only complaint is they should have used a pork sausage instead of a veil sausage for the currywurst.

I love this place! It's fair prices for Great German beer. Their menu is limited, but everything I've tried is really awesome. Well worth the money. The staff is very friendly and once you've been in a couple of times, they treat you like old friends. Also, this place has a punch card...for BEER. Hell yes. I reccomend the german pretzels (made fresh!) and whichever rotated Weiss Beer they've got that week. Franciskaner (fruity hefeweizen) is also a great option for something they keep on tap all the time. It's great on weeknights, for a quiet place to hang with a small group of friends....and great on weekends for the "packed bar" feel. AWESOME.

Writing this review reminds me that I should make a list titled "places I go for the beer and nothing else". I really should. Last Sunday, oh about 7 o'clock, my entourage and I burst through the front doors at Prost! like outlaws at a ghost town saloon. Bartender takes one look at us and shouts "BOOT?" We nod, "Boot!" He pours a giant glass boot of Franziskaner, and we rush outside like greedy children to gulp our treasure down from the comfort of their awesome new (heated) deck. When flying solo or only able to down a liter on my own I'm partial to the Scharzbier, cuddled up to the bar, cradling my beer-specific chilled glass, enjoying the happy chatter of the other equally beer'd Prost! patrons and watching whatever game they've got playing on tv. The beer is stellar, the atmosphere top notch, of course it's going to be packed + crowded sometimes when you go in. Shove your way (politely) up to the bar, order, and try to find a foot or so of space in which to enjoy your beverage. It's worth it. So worth it. The food is decidedly "whatever" (though I suspect that's the way it is with places that are really good at something). If you can wait to eat elsewhere, do so. Or just have another beer.

Prost has a very impressive selection of great German beers and I love that you can get them in liters. Their food is satisfying and their patio is hopping in the summer. They will even let you order food from the food carts ( in their parking lot) and eat it on their patio as long as you order a drink. Just a fun place to gather with friends.

I was feeling a bit under the weather and my first stop wasn't Prost. In fact, I had ordered a very spicy Green Curry to go, at Monsoon Thai across the street. While waiting for my food I decided to have a beer. I figured if the extra spicy green curry didn't cure me, at least the beer would make me feel better. I crossed the street and entered Prost. I recognized many of the liquor bottles behind the bar, but then I looked at the beer taps.. Holy Moly! They were all very german! WOW! I ordered my beer and told the bartender I had to run and get my food from Monsoon. I cam back with my order, grabbed my drink and proceeded to the picnic tables outside. It was a humid day and a bit warm when I started eating my thai curry and drinking my german beer. It was almost as though I were in Bangkok, which of course brought a smile to my face. THe food was excellent, the beer was great, the memories made me laugh and though I was not cured by any of it, Prost did make my day happier :-)

Not even a place to stand it was so busy and there was no waiting list. We couldn't even get up by the bar to grab a drink and the line for the bathroom was 15 minutes long. Some people might think this makes a place better, but we were just uncomfortable and were shoulder to shoulder with weird smelling strangers. If they were gonna be so cool, they should plan to accommodate the crowd or get a waiting list going. We left without a beer and not very happy.

Prost is all about raising a glass and giving some respect to Deutschland and old world tradition rather than the new era of micro beer bliss we know as Portland. Whether you're a fan of Hefeweizen, Pilsner, Lager, Kolsch or Doppelbock, Prost is sure to have it. I was immediately impressed as the bartender explained every beer on draft as soon as I approached the bar. Anyone especially a wine guy can appreciate that! While he elaborated on some very interesting choices I was already looking for a bier called Köstritzer. It's dear to me because it was the first bier-filled boot I ever finished by myself (see my pictures). Yeah go ahead and judge but this Irishman like the rest still drink more than Germany! If you're a fan of black lagers I totally recommend you check it out. It'll deceive your eye with a dark, rich color that drinks light and leaves your mouth with that just brushed clean feeling. Of course it was on draft and although I did not reconnect with it in true Das Boot fashion it was just as enjoyable. Also like Pete L. so eloquently explained I applaud Prost for their usage of appropriate glassware. As Americans who've grown up on aluminum cans and glass bottles I feel we've lost some of the experience in all our consumption, because no amount of super cold mountains or spiral vortex bottles will make up for true beer enhancement. I actually have a collection of stamped bier glasses at home but I'll probably never drink out of them so Prost can now offer me that satisfaction. Inside the space has a long wooden bar up front which is flanked by tables and one lonely cork dartboard. This I question as its placement next to the doorway outside makes trips to the bathroom a risk with inebriated fellows throwing pointy objects near passersby. Although I think outside is where most patrons choose to sit as the patio is quite large complete with a small bar. This makes Prost a great place to relax with your favorite bevy on a nice day or night. We indulged it from sundown to night and the only thing that threw me off was around 9pm when they put out a sign that read: Shhh please be respectful of our neighbors and keep it down. Hey I can appreciate respecting thy neighbor but who's ever heard of a popular bar that's also quite, especially one serving large quantities of beer in shapely glasses! Regardless, don't let this deter you from going down and raising a glass at Prost where every hour is happy hour.

No matter how many reviewers have already mentioned this, it's worth repeating: Prost serves beer in a giant glass boot. I don't know how many liters that is, but basically, bring friends. Three of us polished off one of these fairly quickly, but our tummies were brimming. Two would be hard pressed to kill one of those bad boys and not have stomachs stretched beyond the feel-good point. That's all I've got. We stopped by on an ad hoc pub crawl along Mississippi, drank a boot (the waitress, for what it's worth, was friendly enough), and left.

Whenever I see/hear the word 'prost,' I immediately think Dutch, not German. Blame my Dutch friends and my two trips to Amsterdam. Blame my heritage if you want. You know that feeling that generally surrounds a toast? Y'know, warm, fuzzy, happy feelings? That's the vibe here. It's usually bustling. It's usually full of happy people. There's a big patio to let your fuzzy feelings spill over to the sunshine and fresh air. There is just and overall good feeling surrounding this place. The interior is cozy, fills up quick--a bummer when most of our weather isn't patio weather. This is the place to get your German beer fix. There is no doubt about it. I don't really care about the origins of my beer as long as it tastes good. I do love expanding my horizons and trying new things, though. There are a handful of things on tap, all of which I know nothing about. Thank god for descriptions. I've gotten to the point to know the kinds of things I like and don't like. The bartenders seem pretty good at helping you out, too. Choose your size. Hell, throw down the deposit on the boot if you want. The food is definitely of the snack variety, so it's probably best to time your German adventure when the food carts are open [which we all know is hit or miss, and definitely not late into the evening]. Go forth. Drink German brews. Enjoy the patio.

Mein Deutsch ist sehr schlecht. So bad, in fact, that I'm almost embarrassed to admit my genealogical tie to such a noble homeland, and I've completely disregarded my brief, and unsuccessful, attempt to learn the language. I suppose the lack of a proper tutor, and the harsh, almost angry dialect never sat well with me. Angry is just not my style. Big surprise, right? But great news! There's nothing angry about Prost! or the folks who run the fine, cozy establishment on Mississippi. It's actually the total opposite. Walking in to a bright timber interior, the place just feels welcoming. The friendly faces behind the long bar don't hurt either. Within seconds of grabbing a stool and opening the menu we were greeted by a couple of different bartenders. After mulling over the small, but hardly lacking beer list, my sister and I settled for the Spaten Lager, because one, we could pronounce it, and two, it sounded pretty tasty. It's a solid choice, and at $5.00 for a hefty .5L of light and crisp beer, you can't go wrong with it (especially if you're new to the German brew scene.) The patio is great. Removed from the street traffic, and facing south, you're able to quietly soak up every bit of sun that falls on the wooden tables, benches, and deck. The perimeter plantings are a nice touch, and the ornate detail on the building's side makes it feel like you're chilling out behind someone's house, rather than on a busy avenue. There's just something über relaxing about being here. Maybe it's the humid weather, or perhaps it's the chance to kick back with friends for a few hours with no push to close a tab and move on. Whatever the case, Prost has jumped to the top of my list for new watering hole. And who knows? Maybe if I stick around I'll finally get that proper German lesson. Although you can't argue with the the simple truth, it'd be cool to learn verbiage a little more advanced than: Ja! Prost ist gut!

Okay, sometimes when I write a review I am nagged with guilt that I am unable to give a place a better review than 3 stars, even though I really liked the place. This is one of those such cases so keep that in mind. Ahhh, the sweet relief of a neighboring Food Cart area Honeybuckets when there is a 10 deep line for the two bathrooms inside Prost! Rarely am I so happy to use a Honeybucket but after a few beers at the NAOBF (Thanks Don!), they came in handy! We could no longer tolerate the music at the NAOBF yesterday (review to follow) so decided to head to Prost on a friend's recommendation. Walking into Prost brought immediately transported me back to many pubs I have libated in throughout Europe over the past 25 years. Welcoming interior and a fantastic outdoor seating area! I don't know where the owners of Prost found their servers and bartenders but they should all be cloned and evenly distributed throughout the McMenamin's establishments and other places with scowl faced or indifferent servers. These are some of the best wait staff I have EVER encountered anywhere! Attentive without being overbearing, happy without being sickly sweet and phoney. It is like these servers all woke up and were told the sun would now shine for the rest of the summer in Portland and there really is an Easter bunny! I truly appreciate the service. And did I mention all the staff are very nice looking? Beautiful people not in the model sense but just nice features with great smiles! ALL of them! They don't have a large food menu but kudos to them for allowing people to bring in food from the food cart lot next door. This is really ingenious as some who may have only stopped by for food will bring it into Prost and wash it down with a cold one! Yes, I only gave it a 3 star. I vacillated between the 3 and the 4 and although this may not be fair, there are not many German beers that I love unless I am sitting in Englischer Garten in Munich or another bier garten in Europe. There are a few German beers I do enjoy but they are not on the menu. Give me HOPS to the umpteenth degree and I am a happy girl! If they had even one beer for hopheads, I would be back tomorrow! Also, the bathroom situation is not ideal. Only two stalls or head to the buckets of not so sweet smelling honey next door. I realize this is a German style beer joint but there are many hop heads in Portland so PLEASE put on some good old hoppy IPA's and gain a star from me. Another bathroom and I would give it a 5. All in all, I like this place a lot!

I like this patio. German beer is a good thing, too. Plus you don't have to eat nothing but bratwursts when the carts next to Prost! are open. Unfortunately, none of the carts were open when I was there other than The Sugar Cube. Not Prost's fault. Their pretzel was pretty good though I put a bit too much mustard on it. (The burn!) Anyways. The real reason anyone would go to Prost! is the beer. I got a Spatzen dunkel, whatever that is. Whatever that is was good. They have the option of letting you buy a giant boot glass of beer. This thing's crazy but I just got a small glass. Good thing the option for a giant boot's there if you wanna do that. I wish there were more to the menu than just sausage. Yes, that's German beer-drinking food, but the carts aren't open all the time. I forgot to mention that the potato and leek soup I had was good, but a pretzel and a bowl of soup don't a dinner make. However, beer on a sweet patio was what I was there for and Prost! delivered.
