You can skip it. They try to be an upscale deli...fail. It's disorganized and they keep asking you want you want after you've already told them twice. Menu is confusing. I don't like not being able to see what they're doing with my sandwich behind a high counter. Broccoli cheddar claimed to be good...not so much. You go to pay and they still don't know that you ordered a bowl of soup too. Go to Subway...it's cheaper, condiment selection you can see and cleaner tables.

Sarah, Nick, and Rachel are awesome! Friendly and sweet ^_^ Wish that could take tips, great customer service. Had the A Wreck, one super sandwich! Amazing crew chatted with us while we waited, made us feel at home.

Great service, affordable ordered several breakfast sandwiches and oatmeal all under $20. Wish they had in Hawaii. Staff extremely helpful.

Unbelievably delicious smoothies! I work downtown, and I pretty much get a smoothie twice a week from Potbelly. I also enjoy their selection of Pop Chips, which most sandwich shops do not carry, and their grilled chicken cheddar sandwich is divoon. The service can't be beat. Other businesses could take a lesson from them on expediting orders and friendly service. I'm happy to return again & again!

I work nearby and have gotten both breakfast and lunch sandwiches from them. If you'd like a quick hot sandwich with a reasonable amount of food (8" sandwiches) for a pretty reasonable price (around $5-6) with many options then I think this is just as good as any Jimmy Johns or Quiznos, or whatever. Ambience and service has been better on my visits than other similar chains (especially like it better than Subway). I really think their smaller breakfast "square" sandwiches are one of the best quick breakfast deals in downtown (breakfast is not available at all their locations). If I do stay, which is not often, I like to sit along the windows and watch downtown go by.

Potbelly is such a solid lunch option. I used to frequent it on the regular back in DC, so I'm happy to see it come to the west coast! From the tuna salad sandwich to the wreck to the pb&j (seriously)...these sandwiches are great. They get even better when you add peppers and pickles. It takes all the will power I have not to walk away with a shake or a sugar cookie. Seriously, this is the full deal. Extra Credit: Most Potbelly's will have live music during lunch. Sure, it might not be your cup of tea, but it's not change of pace to other sandwich shop options.

Italian with gardenier..yummm. I am super happy that this Chicago chain has made its way to Portland! The sandwich's are grilled similar to quiznos, but the ingredients are far better quality. There gardiner is a hot pepper condiment that is outstanding. Spicy peppers, carrots, celery, spices marinated in a oil and vinegar blend!

Surprisingly good! I got the tuna on wheat and I will definitely come back. I try to avoid chains or places that seem devoid of character but, like I said, this place was not disappointing (or it was in the sense that I didn't expect much and got the opposite). Sandwich and chips was $6 and the staff was super friendly.

I'd just been on a trip to Chicago and mentioned we got our first Potbelly shop - my friends were so excited that I would soon know the goodness that is Potbelly...and it didn't disappoint! I've been for lunch a few times now and I really do enjoy the food. The sandwiches are good with plenty of choices. If you have time to eat there you will most likely hear some live music which can make it a bit hard to have a conversation with others but it is a nice change up from other places in downtown for lunch.

I have been saying for a couple years now, "why hasn't Potbelly's expanded into the west coast!!!" I have been obsessed with Potbelly's for nearly a decade and since moving out of the Midwest I have longed for it oh so terribly. I feel like the city of Portland is my HOME more than ever now that they have the one thing that was missing: Potbelly's. I for one love the Wreck and the Italian sandwich. And make sure to get it with the hot peppers (aka: giardiniera) because it makes an already wonderful sandwhich even better, as does their mustard. Oh Potbelly's, I cannot thank you enough for branching out into Portland. I love you.

Be prepared to tell the Potbelly employees your order three times. Once before the toaster, then after toasting to the topping person, then again at the register. I'm surprised how unhappy other reviews are about this process. I think it's extremely efficient. You can walk in at noon when the line is at the door and get your food in no time. Great prices for sandwiches that are delicious. I love the Wreck and the Pizza Sandwich. The manager even let us in at closing time when we gave him sad eyes. He said, "you guys look like you need a sandwich, come on in." We were so thankful!

Pretty standard for a Potbelly sandwich shop. Good quick food at a reasonable price. This place meets all expectations and there is nothing wrong with it. I say that...but I want to add one small caveat...there is just something missing from this shop when compared to other Potbellys I have eaten at on the east coast. I am not sure what it is...but something just seems to be off. The food just has a slightly different taste.

Fast service, fresh ingredients. Tasty! Very small sandwiches for the price though.

Oh hell, Potbelly's had to make it over here to Portland? For why? But I guess it's good payback for sending Chicago, Taco Del Mar from the pac nw. muhahahaha. Good thing Portland doesn't have to take credit for that atrocity that is Taco Del Mar, Seattle can. Haha.. Looks the same on the inside, outside I wouldn't recognize it but i'm glad the outside wasn't demolished to make it look like a wooden middle class shanty. Anyway I came in for a milkshake cuz I needed a snack to tide me over while walking in the area and I'm not in the mood for no cookie. It was fine, like always. Obviously, it can never beat Burgerville's delightful milkshakes and ya I know there's none of that Burgerville action downtown but there's better options- food carts even. The shakes will do in a pinch. For the rest of the menu of sandwiches and sad salads, I'm not interested. You can do better Portlanders. Especially downtown.. c'mon.

We were disappointed that they don't have breakfast items (such as oatmeal) other than sandwiches. Which is a Potbelly policy. Locally they have good service and the place was neat.

This was one of our favorite sandwich shops while living in Chicago. In every store in Chicagoland the place was packed. Not in Oregon. I've yet to see the line cue filled. Come on Oregon, give this place a try. You won't regret it. My favorites are the smaller versions of the sandwiches.

  • Jillian R.

Pretty standard fare. All the sandwiches are served warm so be aware of that. I am not a fan of warm sandwiches so would've liked to know that ahead of time.

Everything they sell is savory and made right before your eyes. They use fresh ingredients and have friendly, down-to-earth servers. If you need to use the bathroom, you can use it without paying for anything. Their bathrooms are actually nice. I love their sandwiches, cookies, malt shakes, drinks and brownies! It's all inexpensive so you don't have to worry about looking for the nearest Subway or Jimmy John's when in Downtown Portland. And they have free Wi-Fi (which you can access without paying for anything). Potbelly is a life saver!

I really am a fan! I have been enjoying Potbelly for years. When the Chicago Midway Airport was remodeled Potbelly was one of the local vendors that went into the food court. I can't recall how many years ago it was, but suffice to say it's been a while. Coworkers picked up a sandwich for me along with their order, and I've been hooked ever since. Luckily they expanded and are now here in Portland. I love the fact that we have so many excellent local sandwich shops to choose from, but many times I want something fast and not in the $10+ range. Potbelly is a huge step above Subway or other sandwich chains. Their turkey is thin sliced, and isn't pressed meat full of fillers. That stuff makes me gag. The bread is soft and fresh, and the sandwiches are toasty with nicely melted cheese. I don't know about you, but melted cheese on my sandwich hits the spot. Then there is the giardiniera. The pepper and vegetable mix is what will get me here when the craving hits. It's addictive. If you ask at the register they will give you an extra little cup. All of this for $5. They have an OK selection of chips including Zapps, home made soups, and fresh baked cookies. I haven't tried the shakes, but they're hand scooped, so they should be good. The cookies are always fresh. The dream bar is my favorite of the bunch. I wish that they had a larger delivery area. With only a $15 minimum, it's a pretty sweet deal. You can also order online and pick up at the register. Even if you see a long line they are really efficient and friendly, so you can be in and out quickly.

The pros: superfast service, cheap, nice airy interior with lots of space, sandwiches come hot by default. The cons: generic sandwiches, not many customization options, tastes like Subway. I went to Potbelly for lunch and ended up eating the other half of my sandwich for dinner, so if you're looking to eat on a budget this is a good place to go. The sandwiches are big (especially if you order the uninspiringly-named "Bigs") but not big enough to make you stop and go "damn, that's a big sandwich!" I went with the multigrain bread--the only other choice being white--and it tasted the same as Subway's bread. I went with a turkey and cheddar sandwich with lettuce, pickles, onions, mayo and italian seasoning, and it tasted like Subway's turkey, cheddar, lettuce, pickles, onions, mayo and italian seasoning. On the plus side, I didn't feel like I'd let the contents of a dump truck get emptied into my guts like I always do after Subway, so Potbelly has that going for it, which is nice.

This was my first experience with Potbelly and it was good. Not my favorite, and I hear everyone rants about it so I wanted to see what the hype was. I had the tuna salad sandwich. It was good, but not the best. I like that they tell you calories (and I believe that's a requirement for chains now). The service was really fast for how busy it was. I'd go here again to try something else.

I work downtown and only just recently visited this establishment for the first time. I'm crazy to not have visited this sandwich shop earlier. The employees are helpful and I saw smiles from beginning to end. This visit is how all first time visits should be! I didn't know what to order and to not hold up the line, I ordered what I knew I would like. I saw ham and cheese and was good to go. The official name was "The Hammie" and it just so happens to be one of their lighter (skinny) sandwiches. I was totally fine with fewer calories and paying less. With the new year and all, it fits my resolutions to try something new, be healthier, and save money. The next stop was to put the add-ons to the toasted sandwich. I got the usual fixings and was ready to pay and devour! The sandwich was toasted to perfection and for being a "skinny" sandwich, I was quite content and full. Their normal sandwiches don't cost that much more (less than $6) and would probably put me in a food coma. Potbelly is spacious and is a corner street shop which makes it good for those solo people-watching lunches. I had a blast eating my meal and watching two tourists looking confused and wandering the same street multiple times.

If you know Potbelly, you know Potbelly. Little sandwiches, little price, big tastes. I have written about some of their stores in Texas, but it's been awhile since I've been to one and I was downtown heading to work and wanted to grab a bite before I started my shift. Potbelly works. Gotta have lots of their hot pepper mix (giardiniera), it makes the sandwich to me. They used to have size options on sandwiches, but I guess they got rid of that, back to the simplicity of one size. White or wheat. They also have many salad options, which I've had before. The Wreck is a menu staple. Salami, turkey, roast beef and ham with Swiss cheese. Simple and it works. Add from a list of items and it makes one good looking sub. I do believe they are a better quality sub than either Subway or Blimpie (if they are even in this area) The pepper mix sets them apart. You can purchase the peppers too for only $6.95. If you can't make it yourself, pick some up. It's worth it. Enjoy.

I'm super bummed that I just tried this for the first time last week. I've been frequenting another unnamed sandwich place when downtown because I wanted something quick, mildly healthy, and tasty and now, I have found the perfect place! Initially, I wasn't expecting much because I thought it was just.another.sandwich.pl… . So many of them and the results vary greatly. Upon entering, I see they have a slim menu combo available that includes a sandwich (a little less bread, meat, and cheese) and a cup of soup (lentil, turkey sausage, and kale) and hope for the best. This was the perfect lunch for a rainy, dreary Portland afternoon. The warmed sandwich was just enough and the soup was incredibly flavorful, especially with the bit of turkey sausage. The only sad thing now is that I have to go downtown to enjoy it again! Totally worth it.

Killer deal for what you get. The only think I would like to see is a couple local beers to enjoy with my lunch.

Some folks seem to really crave the sandwiches here. I don't really understand it. I've only ever been to a Potbelly's twice, and both times for breakfast. So maybe the lunch fare is superior. Just so you know, here is how those 'awesome' sandwiches are made: I ordered a bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich. Square (yes, shape is one of the order options). This guy puts a pre-cooked (pre-cooked!) puck of scarmbled egg and a slice of cheese onto a square roll and sticks it into a heat conveyer belt deal--sort of like the machine Quiznos subs are grilled under. It comes out the other end and the cheese is melted onto the presumably heated pre-cooked egg puck. There is a tray full of cooked bacon shards, all crumbled into bits. I suppose for ease of uniform coverage? Anyway, the guy sprinkles some bacon shards on the dairy helmeted egg puck. He askes if I want other toppings, and I get some hot sauce and some shredded iceberg and tomato. That's it. That's how the awesome sandwiches are made. It's like that. Mechanized chain restaurant fast food style. And if that's your thing, great. But you can do so much better than that. Heck, even McDonalds cooks the eggs fresh. This is like breakfast as Starbucks (which consists of microwaving cold pre-cooked sandwiches, and which is awful). Oh yeah, the coffee sucks. Get a soda or something instead. Or go grab a coffee somewhere else.

Hot turkey sandwich and cold chocolate shake is what I like. They are very fast and efficient and the place is always clean.

A blindfolded ninja could not tell you the difference between Subway and Potbelly. The food is both similarly priced and in similar taste. Where Potbelly makes it's mark is in the smaller aspects of it's operation. I went into Potbelly after being hungry for a few hours. The location near Pioneer Square was ideal for my commute. It was such a pleasure to see their large menu, including things such as milkshakes in which I had one. After some careful deliberation, I ordered a meatball sandwich. The two items were about $9 and ready in three minutes. Quickly after, I sat down. They have plenty of tables and it's big despite the hassle of purchasing downtown real estate. As I took my bite, the sandwich was fairly competent and typical. It's meatballs were okay, but the sandwich still had that mushed feel that chains let out. The price was modest and they have all kinds of little options, including an ocean worth of soft drinks and soft drink options. Potbelly might not be amazing, but it provides competition which is good for the consumer. This is a true lunch hour place and it doesn't make for a memorable lunch. If you are about to starve, Potbelly is by your side.

good portion size, reasonable price, good quality sandwich. honestly, i haven't tried anything besides the A-Wreck but, i enjoy it so much i don't bother with anything else. their ingredients are fresh and delicious.

I had almost no time for lunch yesterday, and since this place was visibly packed from the outside, I almost didn't go in. But then the door opened, and I could smell the food... Before I knew it, I was in line. Even though the line was pretty long, I was amazed at how quickly it moved. In minutes I had my food and was back out the door. The sandwich I had was awesome, the tastiest thing I had to eaten in the last week. Hot (but not so hot that it burned) and delicious. Really looking forward to the next time, and I really hope that the second time is as good as the first. One complaint... You need to open a location north of the bridge. I will not be taking the hellacious trip to downtown Portland every time I want a yummy sandwich. Very good, but not much is worth that kind of agony!

I had my first experience with Potbelly about three years ago. I was in Chicago, and decided to have lunch at Potbelly. I ordered the mushroom sandwich, which was the vegetarian option. I ended up finding turkey in my sandwich, which was not really what I wanted, considering I don't eat meat. So long story short, it wasn't the most pleasant experience. Anyway, it was three years ago, so I gave them another chance. I got the same thing (mushroom sandwich). And this time, there was no turkey on my sandwich! And it was actually pretty darn good. Not the best sandwich, but at least you can tell the ingredients were of pretty good quality. Price wise, it isn't bad either. I think it's $4.90 for their classic sandwiches, while their special sandwiches are $5-something. It's not a big as a footlong, but it's certainly better. So yes, Potbelly has redeemed themselves.

As far as sandwiches go, it was fair. I had the chicken and bacon sandwich. I decided to write this review simply based off the customer service. I went in on Friday after driving from seattle being stuck in traffic needing a snack. I'd never eaten here before so I didn't know what to order. The young lady working the counter made a couple salad suggestions and let me know what their most popular subs were. While helping us she was very friendly and talkative. Upon ringing us up I commented to my boyfriend about how nice and what great customer service skills she had. I expected to see them working for tips based off of her demeanor. But there was no tip jar when I cashed out. I believe this young lady deserves to be recognized for her knack in customer service and made one happy customer out of me. (She also suggested the oatmeal chocolate chip cookie which she said they had just baked... So I had to get one. Delicious!)

Potbelly is a fairly new restaurant in the Downtown Pioneer Square area near our hotel. I wanted to try it out and found an afternoon where we needed a small snack. We decided to split a soup and sandwich. The soup was a spicy bean soup, which wasn't spicy but was pretty good. My guy chose the sandwich, his favorite - the roast beef. With all that, I got one of those giant dill pickle. Sometimes just the thought of one will make me crave one. Mmm.

Yum! Getting to the point, the key is the toasty bread. We got the chicken salad sandwich on white with all the fixins. So far, I haven't had a sandwich here that wasn't good. I like it much better than Subway or Quiznos, and wish we had these in So Cal.

Potbelly is the best! I lived in DC where they were everywhere and missed them when I relocated to California. I was excited to encounter them again on a recent trip to Portland. Their sandwiches are delicious and cheap, though I always leave wanting more. Their mustard and pickles really set the sandwiches apart, as does the toasting. The prices range from $4.50-6 and they also have salad and soup options. You can get a shake (with real fruit) for a few bucks too. I noticed they had a breakfast menu, but I didn't sample it. It looked pretty cheap though! When you're there spend the extra $1.25 on their oatmeal chocolate chip cookie. This is hands down the best cookie money can buy.... it's so soft and chewy. Not too much chocolate but not overly oatmeal either- just really perfect! I ate here three times on my recent trip and about 90% of the time I had outstanding service and the other 10% it was fine, perhaps not as friendly as the other folks I saw. The bathrooms are locked so you need to get a key at the front desk.

All I knew was that I vaguely remember reading a good review about this joint. Thinking further, if we pushed MIL's wheel chair really hard diagonally from the gigantor holiday bush in Pioneer Square, she would a) get across faster b) she would block traffic so we could leisurely cross to the Pot. As I entered, I sniveled about the decor. It was a quasi-early twentieth century mishmash mixed with really loud wall paper and thought...well, no really, that really was about how things were decorated back in the mid '70s. When I got my sub, my first reaction was to say how cute...and petite. They are not really expensive. After a couple of bites, I thought it was reasonable especially for the quality that this clearly this is. However, we have got used to being huge in our quick foods. Evidently this is the size that these were in 1977. For an extra $2 you can order a larger, more...modern sized sandwich. You can also order yours with extra meat, if you want the real gluttony special. You can get it sliced "thin cut" with a third less bread, which I applaud. The roll is very, very good; the meats are excellent. Watch out for the house made peppers if you order them. These are not pepperoncini, but a crunchy spicy, thing. Not jalapenos, but in the neighborhood and very good. They brag that the chicken salad is house made also, and it appears to be so. With toppings, it is good, but without, it would be a bit bland, SO had a chocolate malted, which is handmade; no soft serv in this joint. Very good and the malt drink bling is fun. We can't comment on the salads or soups, but I suspect what we have here is a winner, so I bet they are worth trying. The Mediterranean sand with humus and roasted peppers and what-not is a special, and sounds very interesting. Leave room for the cookies. Or make a special stop in for 'em. They are all huge and the sugar cookie we had was a happy groaner. Now, in the evening around Pioneer, the choices for a cheap date night are slim to none, but during the day there are many choices for a meal and this might not be worth a stop at compared to the food stands in the area. However, if you have a lunch meeting in the office, they are equipped for lunch orders to be faxed and have deals and packages to make this worthwhile. And it would be so much better than most for a lower cost, stick-the-boss-with-the-bill lunch. If standing in the rain eating your lunch has lost its charm for you, this would be a warm, dry alternative. They have opened one in the 'Beave, too.

Today is a very important day in American history: Why, yes, I did my civic duty and voted - but also, I ate a meatball sub at the brand spanking new Potbelly Sandwich Shop in downtown Portland. I didn't do so without the gentle background that some of my friends and coworkers offered me, though. You see, my Chicago-native buddies knew about Potbelly's way before I did. Apparently it's a chain way out in the midwest, and every location has a stage with live music playing. You'll be sad to learn that the Portland location does not (yet) appear to have a stage. But they do have the main attraction: cheap, meaty, flavourful sandwiches, milkshakes, and an admirable chip selection. This is the perfect place to bring the skinny man in your life. You know the type - the kind of guy who can eat a whole pizza for lunch and weigh 115 lbs no matter what. My three other coworkers paid less than $5/each for our sandwiches. From what I heard the milkshakes were good and presentable (each milkshake comes with two tiny flaky cookies stacked through the straw). I know I will be back here and I have a feeling it'll be a popular lunch spot among my office mates. You can't disagree with a hearty sandwich that ain't even five whole dollars but fills you up until five.

I'm updating my review from nearly two years ago (time flies when the eatin' is good). Potbelly is a great reliable place for me to stop as I make my way through the city with this particular venue being easy to get in and out of and not far from my bus stops or Pioneer Courthouse Square. I think it still deserves the five stars. I've not seen a decline in quality or in service; in fact the counter folks make their jobs look easy and let their charm lead the way. There are several sandwiches I like, but lately it seems I keep returning to the Mediterranean (spicy hummus, artichokes, and other tasty veggie goodies). If I'm really in need of a treat, their malts are great and help tamp down the cravings for lots and lots of ice cream (it's hard to have control over ice cream, can't keep it in the house). I like the sandwich size which make me feel just full enough and not squealing like a piggie about to burst.

I am saddened that my favorite sandwich shop has closed down. I'm talking about the Big Town Hero subs near PSU. ( they were pretty basic but that's the way I like it. ) However! Change is a good thing; I'm moving on to Pot Belly! It has quickly became a favorite of mine. I've tried several sandwiches on their menu now and I'm impressed! The price for a sandwich is around $5-6 dollars. Freaking affordable right?! Perfect sandwich for a quick lunch! The sandwich portion though I'd say is lacking, so if you're a fattymcfatphat grab a bag of chips and don't complain because you've been warned! Just some quick information that I know of Pot Belly. They have a range of sandwiches you can order from such as ham, turkey, roast beef, chicken breast, tuna salad and of course some specialty sandwiches. You get a choice of white or multigrain wheat, you get a wide selection of vegetables and sauces to choose from to add to your sandwich. ( my favorite is the hot peppers ). This place also has salads which I see a lot of people ordering frequently and they also have soups; both of these I have yet to try. Don't be intimidated by the huge line that even stretches to the door. The ordering process and sandwich making is incredibly fast.

A coworker took me to this place the other day. It's your typical subway style shop where you choose your sandwich, add the ingredients on and they make it for you. The place is clean and trendy. Almost cozy. They serve breakfast and lunch style sandwiches. The service was good. I like sub shops in general, There are pluses and minuses to each of the chains, But this place is not a chain. This place is more like Quiznos, They have a few sandwiches And little to no extra ingrediants for the sandwich. They have hot stuff like chilies, And it's a mixture of a bunch of different kinds of Chili's thrown into a pickling jar. Very good. Anyway I had the sandwich called the Wreck. Salami, roast beef, ham, turkey and real swiss cheese. Their bread was really good. Kind of a cross from Jimmy John's and Quiznos, toasted as well. You can add chips and a drink. They are local style chips and you can get fresh cookies which are awesome! I had a cookie that was called the brownie cookie... Another plz!! It was a pretty good price to. I got a regular sandwich, one cookie and a bottle of Mountain Dew for $8.50. A regular sandwich is the same size as a regular sandwich at Quiznos. I didn't look over the menu too well but they do have specials daily. And what I mean but specials is it's not price it's a different sandwich that's not on the menu. On all I was really good place to go eat, fellowship with my friend and enjoy a pretty good lunch.

Visited yesterday for the Mediterranean on whole wheat with mushrooms (My first time at a Potbelly) -It will be my last. Service was fast through the line at noon, but, nothing can erase my experience of finding literally, a 1.5 inch long piece of what looked like a stick or skewer, in my sandwich. It was my last bite of the otherwise tasty sandwich, only to bite into something extremely hard and obviously foreign to a hummus and veggie sandwich. I didn't ask for a refund, nothing- just to give him a heads up that it feels like I split my tooth in half on whatever found its way into my sandwich. When I brought the item to the manager's attention, he was of course very nice, sincere, and apologetic and had no idea what it was from. Not reassuring, but I don't care because I won't be back to see if they have quality controlled their sandwiches since this.

Quiznos. But with milkshakes, coke products, more employees, and a bit more seating. And I'm being nice. I've been to the downtown and the Hillsboro location. Nothing super special about these places. But don't take my word for it. If you're a huge sandwich fan, it might be worth a visit to see for yourself.

Great place to go and sit down for a sandwich. I had the grilled chicken and cheddar with the hot peppers. That is a must brings out the flavors in the sandwich. I think anyone in the area should give this a try. I'm not a real big sandwich person but this was good.

Food is usually good, but have had two horrible experiences now in a row. I was in there for lunch today and there was a really rude woman working at the beginning of the order process, as a Downtown hotel concierge I have no intention of going back or sending anyone else there. I have celiac disease and cannot eat gluten. I asked her if she knew if any of the soups were gluten free. She told rolled her eyes and told me she "didn't know" and then just stared at me like I was bothering her. She didn't find out if the soups had gluten or offer any obvious gluten free solutions. The rest of the time I was in line and at the establishment she kept looking down the line at me as if I had burdened them in some way. Really horrible experience...

I decided to give this place a second chance on Friday and only the Apple Store exceeds this place in maddening frustration. It's unfortunate because I've had really good sandwiches both times I've been here, but the way this place operates is maximally stupid. I got in line. Because there's a line. Someone tried to cut in front of me and I dropped a "hey buddy, the line's back here." Except it turned out that a: the person I was lined up behind me wasn't in line (I never figured out why she was standing in the line area) and b: the mobile order taker was waving me forward when I was looking at my phone. Jesus, aren't you mobile? I know you're there, I'm waiting for you to come to me. I've been here before, I know you expect your customers to be sheep or cattle or yuppies. But whatever. I moved up and ordered and the person tried to push me down the chute. I nearly snapped at her not to touch me, which is a behavior I not only don't do but I don't tolerate. Really, go find a cave somewhere if you abhor human contact. But I'm already irritated and I know how a line works, so I don't need your guidance. Then I get in line. If there's a line, why the hell are you bothering with the tablet? Lines at counters work really well, it's a proven system. It's not like you're innovating away the line or the counter with some kind of science fictional sandwich generation stations (which, for the record, would be pretty awesome, even without the white jumpsuits), you're just fucking it up by showing off with your extraneous wireless technology. And now someone behind the counter is barking at the tablet wielder to keep moving. Way to go, Manager of the Year. She's doing her job, it's just a stupid job. Then someone asks me what I ordered. I just told someone, don't you all communicate? That tablet clearly goes somewhere, it can't give me a number or record my name? Starbucks can do that with a pen. Okay, whatever, I tell him and he finds my sandwich (which was in front of him) and hands it to someone else. Wait, what the hell? Why does that job even exist? How do you hire for a human conveyor belt? Was that originally someone's semi-moronic son in law and it got written into the company handbook somehow? Corporations work that way, I know. The person who got the sandwich says says all their sandwiches get Italian seasoning, is that okay? Look, that's what you say to someone you're collecting money from, or breaking up with. You only end a sentence with "is that okay" when you KNOW it's not okay. So keep your stupid Italian seasoning. In fact, keep your sandwich. No, no, don't be rude to the minimum wage worker. No, I don't want Italian seasoning. I don't even know what it is and if all your sandwiches get it just put it on! Mayo and mustard, that's all. This person is the only one who seems to detect my suboptimal mindset and complies in an efficient fashion. Which means impending layoff because Potbelly doesn't go for that efficiency bullshit. That's why there's fifteen people behind the counter (with only one order taker). I at last get my sandwich and go to the cash registers. "What kind of sandwich did you get?" AM I ON MISTER SHOW? IS THERE A CAMERA HERE? ARE TIM AND ERIC ABOUT TO POP OUT AND LAUGH AT ME? I HATE AVANT GARDE COMEDY. "Do you have a manager?" I actually said that. At this point I wanted to tear wide, bloody strips of flesh of someone not making minimum wage. I was that pissed at how stupid this whole situation was. I know how this works and it should never involve asking someone three times about their order. Twice is pushing it. "Would you like to talk to the manager?" No, I'm asking because I think it's funny. In hindsight this might actually be a really smart anti-complaint technique. In any event I decided that the person who deserved flensing was probably at HQ and even the store manager wasn't sufficiently senior, or seminar-addled to deserve my hate. Never mind, just take my money and get me out of here. And the chip selection sucks. Oooh, sick burn.

I'm pretty sure that I'm supposed to get notified whenever a Chicago original restaurant opens a location in Portland. They did not notify me, but luckily I had to be at the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals on Friday and saw... POTBELLY!!!! It looks like their FIRST Portland location has only been open a few days. This place is a taste of home. The service very fast and they actually direct you in an efficient leap-frog method so that even a line to the door doesn't take too long. I really like the Italian Sandwich. Shakes are good. Cookies are good. And this place is CHEAP. The sandwiches are about $5. Even with the aforementioned shake, you're dealing with about $8 for lunch. So go, and have a great sandwich, or don't go, and allow me to get my food quicker. Either way, someone wins.

The first thing that you immediately notice when you walk in is the smell of fresh bread. It is very large and it almost looks like a chain sandwich shop....but better. It's standard, however, a step up from what I am used to where I come from. It's quick, cost efficient and easy if you want something then and there. Staff need to smile more.

Dear Chicago, Thank you for sending a Potbelly to Portland for me. I appreciate the easy access to your deliciously unhealthy and toasty Italian sandwiches. I am impressed by the way the store has adapted to Portland's recycling and compost standards, even with the water cups. The decorations of Portland architecture and history pay an excellent homage to the Potbelly's you might find back in the Windy City. Yours, Ehow

Stopped by here for a quick breakfast since we didn't want the full service type diner. They have a promise that you won't be waiting in line for more than 8 minutes and they actually stay true to that. When we got there, a race or run must have ended because there were so many teens in front of us just as hungry as we were. My boyfriend ordered the Roast Beef with everything on it and said it was pretty good. Everything tasted fresh and the portion wasn't too big or too small. I ordered a bowl of Chili and you could tell it was home made. The ingredients inside were also fresh and it was a nice change to see other stuff besides just meat and beans. I also noticed on the menu there's an option to customize or build your own sandwich? That's pretty cool.

Based off the other reviews, this place is apparently packed. It literally just opened, so I don't know how you can leave a bad review solely on that - of course it's going to be packed. Everybody wants to try it! I would ignore the reviewers saying that it isn't good - this is a chain restaurant. If you want incredible, delicious food, stop picking Subway quality food and go to a local joint! I was worried that this place would be too much like Quiznos, but it surprisingly isn't. The ordering process is kind of confusing, which is why I marked down one star. You start on the right side with your sandwich, then you stand in front of the condiment people and list off what you want. It seems like that bit takes up too much time since people are indecisive and uneduated on what their options are. I think a better option would be to just order all up front (like Quiznos) and figure it out later. Anyhow, I got a "Smoked Ham" on Multigrain. It was pretty good, and you can't really go wrong making a sandwich like this. It was tasty, simple, quick. I didn't have to wait in line because apparently nobody goes to lunch as early as me (11 on the dot) I'll go again...soon.

Let's get down to it. With these dinky sandwiches, theres almost no point. Especially with all the great sandwich shops in town. Small, nothing special sandwiches. They weren't bad, just with the food choices here in Portland, theres no reason to go back. Trying it I doubt will make you a regular.

  • J P.

Good sandwiches. I feel that they are a bit small, but some may disagree. There is a lack of choices when it comes to a side. There are only full meal size salads, no potato salad, mac. saled, etc. There is soup, but I didn't have any... too hot for soup. Nice staff, the line moves fairly quick and the place is usually packed for lunch.

Wasn't extremely impressed with the food here. Counter staff were friendly and service was fast but there really wasn't much to set this place apart from numerous other sandwich restaurants I could eat at. My turkey sandwich was prepared well but the portion seemed small for the price. Given how many other places I can choose to eat in downtown I doubt I'll be back here soon as the only factor that might draw me in is that it's extremely convenient since it's across the street from my work. Otherwise, pretty average.

OMG!!! I'm so happy to have a Potbelly's nearby again, after moving away from Chicago. I have been jonesing for their oatmeal chocolate chip cookies for years. (My cooking skills are not up to duplicating them.) I would seriously wait in a line outside the door in the frigid Chicago winter for lunch at Potbelly's, but it was worth it. I'm very happy to report that the Portland location gives me a sandwich and cookie that tastes just the same. A few operations management notes. First, you order the kind of sandwich you want and whether you want regular or multigrain bread. Don't bother telling this person the toppings you want - their job is to start your sandwich and put it in the rolling oven. Someone else will get your sandwich when it's done cooking and ask for your toppings. You might have to skip around the person in front of you in line to get to the toppings station where your sandwich will be completed. Don't worry, though. They might skip over you to pay if their sandwich is done. You'll get used to the line skipping, since the Potbelly's employees are directing traffic to keep wait times to a minimum. All of the meat is sliced in house, and the cookies are baked there. All of this makes for good food, quickly, rather than typical fast food. And as a bonus, you can eat inside on blustery days. (Assuming it doesn't get so crowded that the line is out the door. Which could happen.)

I had lunch with a friend today; it was fine and adequate when you are in a hurry. The staff was very friendly and efficient. We got our sandwich quickly. It was a bit crowded, so we found a place at the bar looking out the window; that was good for people watching. The price is fair; I did not feel over charged. I have no complaints about my sandwich; however, adequate is how i would describe it. If you are looking for something gourmet or unusual, do not stop here. Not sure i will hurry back, but i would not complain if someone suggested we eat there. It is quick and easy.

Until I wandered by this corner I had never heard of Potbelly Sandwiches so I don't come to this with prejudices one way or the other about sacrosanct Chi-town eating establishments. So I will say this, everything smelled good, the line moved fast, we had no trouble finding seating during a mid-week lunch hour and my buddy and I devoured our sandwiches (a Wreck and an Italian) with gusto. The prices were more than fair (and they have no tip jar so I hope they compensate the folks behind the counter well). It's a little busy and confused in its decor and menu options (why do sandwich chains seem to always have this mess of different menus on all the walls?) but we kept it simple and were happy with what we got. The live music at lunch time is a nice touch and the guy playing and singing covered a gamut, from Modest Mouse to the Allman Bros. He DID have a tip jar and I made sure to drop a bill in it. I'll be back and next time I'll save room for a malt. Damn I love a good malt.

Seems to be a chain of indeterminant origin that is clearly aiming somewhere squarely in the middle. Service was stilted, awkward, and unsatisfying. We only ended up getting some soup and it was actually worse than canned Campbell's.... No plans to return. We have so many premium options in Portland, I mean, this is a class food town: don't bother with this place.

Was looking for a cheap option for supper one night and saw this place going into our hotel. It is right by Pioneer Court House and the Hilton, convenient if you are at either. The sandwich was good, but really what made it was the hot peppers you can get it on it. Also, they have good milkshakes. Good for lunch, or a quick dinner, but wouldn't go out of my way to eat here. Ordering and paying is confusing, because the line to order your sandwich is somewhat hidden, but the registers are in full view. Staff was pleasant, though it wasn't busy at all when we went in. Worth a stop if you are in the area and need something to hold you over. If anything else grab a tasty milkshake for less than $5.

I'm not really a "sandwich" type of person. When people ask me where I want to go to lunch, I don't usually suggest grabbing a sandwich. But some friends had talked about how great Potbelly was so I was willing to try it. And I was sold! I ordered the "Italian" which has capicola, mortadella, pepperoni, and salami, and provolone cheese. I opted to have it on white bread although you can choose whole grain. The first time I went (yes...the first time...I loved it so much, I went back again), I ordered my sandwich with thin bread...meaning they cut out 1/3 of the bread from the inside so you save 1/3 on calories. I ordered my sandwich with everything except mustard...meaning it came with mayo, peppers, pickles, onion, lettuce, tomatoes, oil, and Italian seasoning. I think what makes the sandwich extra special is that they toast it so its all warm goodness and taste so yummy. I loved it so much that I went back a couple of days later and got the Italian again. I think I'm addicted!

Cute, Clean, Contemporary!! The three "C"s... But thats what I'd give it, a "C" grade. Oh, I'd eat here again, BUT, not if I had a good alternative. Parked my rig in Tigard and caught the #12 Bus, headed for "Festa Italia" @ Pioneer Square. Was VERY hungry and asked at a token booth if there was anyone serving a meatball sandwich at the Festival. This Luca Brazzi kinda guy said an emphatic "NO!", so I went across the street to Potbelly that I noticed when I got off the bus. Pretty good meatball sandwich but not "Stand Alone".. Good pickle though... More like a Goodyear Blimp pickle. So I get done kinda unsatisfied with my sandwich and went back to the "Festa", came around a corner and there was someone with a "Lamb" meatball sandwich... Sheesh!!! Thanks Luca... Sleep with the Fishes!!!

Ate here for the first time - The food was great - I got the roast beef with provolone on multi-grain. The Sweet Potato Pop Chips are amazing and they have the biggest pickles I have ever seen. However, this would have been a 5 star review if the vibe was better. The general manager seemed overly nice (like he didn't really mean it) and the other employees looked miserable. It made me want to take my food to go, which is a shame because the decor is nice.

Honestly peed my pants a little when I found out they were opening a Potbelly here. I grew up in Chicago and have eaten these subs pretty much once a week since the day I was born. So I finally get to go for the first time in 6 months with stars in my eyes. Probably ran a few people over to get home to eat my sub. HOWEVER, I open my sandwich to find there was NO GIARDINIERE which I definitely asked for. What a bummer. I still love you Potbelly but please, a Chicago girl needs her GIARDINIERE.

Cheap decent sandwiches. The place has a really lame system ( there is someone holding a tablet that walks around down the line to get your order...but I don't even know what I want yet.) The people at this place has no communication, the topping people and cashier ask 'what's your sandwich'? This place was pack, no seats were available and long lines.

Brings me back to Chicago! Excellent sandwiches served on the cheap. Most options come in under $5, which is a steal. So glad they ended expanding out west. Give it a try!

I have only had the wreck and the chicken salad sandwich. I had the chicken salad when I was attempting a "healthier" option, but the wreck was just too good to pass up the other 10+ times i've now eaten there. The service is fast and the menu is very simple and basic. The prices are also very reasonable given the location and surrounding competing options. I would highly recommend to anyone who enjoys a delicious sandwich.

It was OK. I don't know about the layout. Seems overly complex, but I guess they need the time to toast the sandwich. I didn't find the sandwich to be so great so I am "meh" about coming back. Too many other great sandwich places downtown.

This place reminds me of a fancy subway. There is a limited menu, but when I'm in a hurry I like that. I ordered the Italian and a bottle of ginger ale. The sandwich was very good and so was the soda. On the plus side, my meal was free because Sterling Bank was buying lunch as a random act of kindness. It was a bit more than I spend on lunch, but I am a cheap grad student. I will return here is the future but it won't be a regular lunch stop.

Tried this place for the first time today and loved it. I had the Chicken Salad on multi-grain bread with no cheese and a cup of chili. Both were very good. I've seen the other comments about the ordering system here and I liked it. I was in a hurry but the line order taker was very polite and helped speed me through the ordering process. There was a long line but I was out of there in less than 10 minutes. I'll definately go back.

My hubby and I stopped in here while we were in the area last weekend... All I can really say is, the quality of ingredients was really sad. I ordered a basic sandwich and really was not expecting anything extraordinary. But what I got was uber-processed lunch meat - No, seriously. The kind you would expect out of the cheapest of cheap packages at the grocery store. Ground, pressed and salted. EW. The worst tomatoes that have ever crossed my lips (the gray, grainy kind) and brown-ish shredded lettuce. Pay them a visit if you're starving your a** off and can't afford more than 5 bucks for a sammie. Otherwise, I would stick with subway. P.S. They charged me .75 cents because I asked for "extra lettuce". Woah.

I love this place so happy that they came to Portland. It's like Quizno's but way way better, yep 2 way's. I love any of their sandwiches with mushrooms, they have a great variety on the menu and the people that work here are nice and fun. I have already been twice and they just opened.

Oh Potbelly... what can I say??? I can say our office has ordered from you 3x in the last 1 week period (Wed to Wed). It's a great deal at $5 a sandwich & you deliver for a small $3.50 charge. People have commented the sandwiches are small but they are at least 6" long. Possibly the amount of meat in the sandwich but when you add the condiments, it's a filing sandwich. I get the wreck with no cheese & salami. They have a "thin-cut" bread option which is nice (i don't know why more places don't offer something like this, more than half of us get this). They use a nice brown deli mustard & the hot peppers are a homemade veggie blend that is spicy but if you like some heat, not hot. But if you don't, you might want to get them on the side. They also have great pickles! I've gotten one each & every time. I tried the chili yesterday, it was good, not great, I probably wouldn't get it again. It was extra to add onion & cheese & by the time it got to us, you couldn't tell anything was added. Ordering for us was easy, you print out a fillable menu that has each person puts their name & order (the sandwiches come with your name on them!), you fax it in & call to double check they got it. It's usually an hour for delivery but we also order 7+ items. I haven't been inside the actual store so I can't comment on ordering inside. I was surprised it was a chain by the flavor & quality. I'm not a sandwich expert but I really like these sandwiches. They also have a nutritional list online that you add the sandwich & what you got in it & it calculates all the stats. So it's good if you're trying to be health conscious.

Not being a fan of these kind of sandwich shops in the first place should have been a clue. But, I thought maybe this would be the one to change my mind. I was wrong. This is like a cross between two other chain 'sub shops' that have soggy mediocre sandwiches. I had the turkey and swiss on multigrain. I will say the bread was good, but the meat and cheese were typically paper thin, overly salty, super processed, and bland. (Fresh sliced in store daily! does not mean it's fantastic. it means you sliced it. just today. that's it.) The vanilla shake had good flavor and texture although it did have an odd 'greasy' feeling which while probably an indicator of real cream, made an odd sensation in my mouth. The whole store interior had a cookie cutter fake feeling, sort of cartoonish or doll house feeling. Like the signage and counters had been punched out of pre-printed cardboard. The employees seemed to have been trained to be super cheery and friendly, possibly loaded with catch phrases. I was half expecting some kind of cheer about my order like the mix in ice cream shop does when you tip. Two stars because at least it was edible, and the shake was good. But next time i'm craving a fast sub style sandwich i'm sticking with the double initial store.
