I should have known better from the name, but then again there aren't many options in the vicinity. This is the southeast edge of downtown Portland, far enough away from the shopping and services that there just aren't many restaurants or coffee shops around. I just ate a grease bomb at this place: a sausage, egg and cheddar breakfast sandwich. The square option. Yes, that's right. The square option. I'm not sure what other shapes were available. Maybe the rhombus or the hexagon would have been better. In the end the 'square' had excess bunnage on the corners. A rectangle would have been even worse. I'm blown away by how much grease dripped from this thing. The cheese. Somehow the cheese had separated between grease and solids. And the sausage. It was greasy. I was on my way to a job interview and it was a challenge not to grease up my shirt, my jacket, my pants. The decor is Kozy Kitchen Kitchy. Yes. There is a pot belly stove. That grease bomb sits like a brick in the gut. I don't think I'll be back...

Oh, how I've debated writing this review today. If you look at my reviews, you see how excited I was when Potbelly opened a store near Pioneer Square. Being from Chicago, I've liked Potbelly for a long time and was excited then AND really excited when I heard they were opening a new location two blocks from my place of employment. Today I ran across their now OPEN location as I walked back from lunch. Not being deterred, I decided to get an Oreo shake to tide me over till Wednesday, when I could actually get a sandwich. Then I watched as the first employee slowly tried to scrape out every last bit of my shake as it was obvious it was going to be short. Then I see her take it to another worker who simply adds the baby oreos to the top. Again, I wait for that realization that this isn't right. Then I'm handed my super short shake and I just stare in disbelief... two workers had looked at the shake and thought it was acceptable. I don't think its acceptable. I am not happy about this first experience. I'll struggle with returning for a future sandwich. I posted a picture of the shake. you can all determine if I'm out of my mind.

It's decent. It doesn't seem all that different from a quiznos, although I would say it is somewhat better. I like the pizza sandwich.

Gave Potbelly another chance. Still have to yell out an order due to noise. Ordered my sandwich without oil this time & it was way better; not the greasy mess I had before. So, the key is "no oil."

Oh, how I wish businesses would properly train their employees before opening. This location has been opened for a few weeks now, and yesterday I walked in for the first time. I've previously had Potbelly in Cleveland (also at a newly opened location, by the way, but that experience went way more smoothly and I was a repeat customer there). I walked in yesterday and was greeted by two teenage girls and another young woman who appeared to be the manager. I ordered the Mediterranean Sub and a cup of soup. It took (I am not exaggerating) 10 minutes to make my sandwich. Why? Because the manager took my order, put the bread in the oven to toast, and walked into the back, leaving the two untrained teens to guess at how to complete the sandwich. When they did figure it out, my soup was practically lukewarm (it had been sitting on the counter by the register the entire time). The teen who rang me out forgot my soup (and to charge me for it), so it's a good thing I wasn't in a hurry and was paying more attention than she was. This whole time, I was the only one in the store. The sandwich was fine and the soup was ok (a little salty and cold...). Overall, this could have been a way better experience if I didn't have to watch and listen as two girls guessed how to make my sandwich for 10 mins. Service was just so awkward.

I was disappointed when the Quizno's at this location had closed, but was excited when the "Potbelly coming soon!" sign appeared in the window a while later. So far, I have only been twice, trying the chili and the Clubby sandwich and both were pretty good. They have a variety of sandwiches to choose from, a build your own option, some soups, smoothies and milkshakes. They also serve breakfast, which may be worth trying out some morning. Plus, both times the staff were super friendly and helpful. Potbelly does have the potential to become one of my favorite lunch spots.

How did I not know of this hidden gem sooner? Not only are the sandwiches delicious, but the customer service was so exceptional that I had to write a Yelp review, even though I hardly ever do. I walked into Potbelly feeling stressed out and desperately hungry last Thursday, and I wasn't looking forward to dealing with any human beings or obligatory customer service small talk in the process of filling my empty stomach. My attitude completely changed when the cashier guy rung up my order. I was fumbling around in my bag for my wallet, suddenly realizing that I might not even have the cash for the sandwich, and I didn't even have to explain myself to the cashier guy before he volunteered something along the lines of, "Don't worry, it's chill, I know how frustrating it is to lose track of your things when you're on the go." He looked at me with such understanding and patience that I felt immediately at ease, and as I continued searching my bag, he asked me how I was doing and then kindly listened as I vented about my day. When I finally found my wallet and realized I actually had extra cash, I tried to hand the kind cashier a $5 tip just for being so nice to me, but he said he wasn't allowed to accept tips. I hope that awesome cashier reads this review and realizes that he totally restored my faith in humanity and sandwiches that day. I didn't think to get his name before he politely wished me the best and hurried off to make some shakes for other customers, but he was wearing glasses and appeared to be in his twenties. Oh, and the Mediterranean sandwich was spectacular!
