It was our first time eating here after reading about it on Portland's cheap eats and it sure didn't disappointing. The chicken was very tasty and the corn tortillas was da bomb! My wife loves also all of the sides specially the cabbage. The spot is fairly small and it was a 100 degree day so it was hot specially inside where It's pretty much bar stool seating. The outside had picnic tables with umbrella cover shared with Kim Jong Grillin. We will definitely come back on a cooler day.

The much vaunted Pollo failed to impress on my first outing. The thigh meat was the only part of the chicken that wasn't overlooked, but even then the entire half-bird was underseasoned. Throw in two bland sides for a massive $16 and you can see why I won't be back. Had to go to the adjacent oh-so-tasty Korean food truck to get something that actually had some taste in it.

Ok so I don't eat meat and by that I mean I don't eat chicken either. So, I've been dying to check out Pollo Norte. Yeah. I'm a weirdo but hubby and son love chicken and they devoured theirs tonight! We had all the sides most of which I can eat. Made myself a few little bean and rice tacos out of those freaking good homemade corn tortillas and I was happy! We pretty much polished off several orders of food while dining al fresco as it's finally cooled down in PDX. I suggest you get over to NE 42nd and eat some chicken et el at Pollo Norte.

Summary of this ridiculously overhyped place: white person tries to do Mexican street food, fails miserably, receives a ton of hype anyway because dude's white and male. Classic. And yep, I said it. Feel free to quote me and throw sticks and stones, but I'll stand behind that statement any day. Because let's be honest here... this place sucks. Shockingly overpriced for the teeniest, tiniest portions. Come on, Shelton -- can we talk real talk here, for a second? The chickens you're giving us aren't actually CHICKENS, right? You're serving roasted game hen, or quail... because with chicken legs the size of my thumb (and as an Asian girl, I have pretty small hands), there's no way that those things are roasted CHICKEN. Don't be a jerk; give us the real meat that we paid for. And you know, if you're gonna just serve one thing, at least serve it well. Soggy, RUBBERY, under-seasoned chicken skin with really REALLY incredibly dry meat and bland sides is your meat and potatoes. What on earth... do people here actually enjoy this??? This place is seriously like Boston Market for snotty Portlanders. But worse!!! The saddest thing is, Pollo Norte is smack dab in the middle of a pretty Hispanic strip that serves food that is par, if not better. Of course, these small mom-and-pop places get ignored though. Why? Simply because they're not headed by white hipsters with tattooed sleeves and beards who once had the best chicken of their lives on the streets of Mexico while on a 3 month long backpacking trip through Central America. Gag. The Oregonian, Eater, Portland Monthly Magazine, and everybody who is gushing about this place need to wake up.

When I was in Spanish 7-8 at age 15, my highschool Spanish class took the train from Nogales to Guadalajara. There was a group of lanky, perpetually starving teenaged boys who ate nothing but roast chicken for the entire trip. Breakfast, lunch , and dinner. Even at Lake Chapala where most of us ate the famous delicious white fish, they ate pollo asado. And often their food was better. Something about stuffing torn bits of tender, juicy chicken into a handmade tortilla with some salsa, that's pretty good sh...stuff. I think they were onto something. Pollo Norte presents an opportunity to do that, shovel chicken into your hungry, greedy mouth via tortilla with some salsa. Theres a limited menu. We tried all of it. The best parts were the chicken, the OMG potatoes saturated in chicken drippings and the tortillas. The other sides were good but didn't stand out. The cabbage under the chicken was tasty too. I got a frosty can of pop to drink while I waited and was offered a lime. Nice touch. Its a small place. Maybe 15 barstools with counter seating. Four parking spaces in their gravelly lot. Friendly people working at the counter. I liked it. For people who say the chicken was underseasoned, maybe youre used to costco rotisserie which is pumped full of salt or freddys ( which can have msg). This is very simple chicken. I initially thought oh hey it could use salt but as we ate I decided no, its chickeny self is shining through. It didnt need anything. Maybe some pico de gallo would be a welcome touch but otherwise, it's spot on. Princess declared this good stuff. I wish it was a bit closer to my part of town. The 45 min drive home with the good smells wafting through my car about killed me!

I too am jumping on the Pollo Norte rave wagon. Cluck, cluck. This 10 seat, boxcar-sized diner isn't fancy. It's just simple, delicious, unpretentious food served up fresh and piping hot, and as such, it is everything that is good about independent business making the choice to do one thing very, very well. The secret is in the simplicity. The birds are seasoned with salt, lime, chili, and maaaaaaybe some recado rojo, but that's gotta be it. It's obvious that they source quality meat and let the juicy flavor of a well-cooked chook speak for itself. And look, I know it's all about what's on the rotisserie, but it was the freshly made tortillas, salsas and slaw that stole the show. The potatoes were delicious as well. And the cabbage covered in drippings. And the porky charro beans. Plus, booze. Yeah, I'd say you should probably swing by at some point.

NE 42nd is the spot! I just love this little neighborhood. Right next to NEPO 42, Pollo Norte has a small restaurant with only 3 parking spaces. The menu is fairly simple, you order the amount of chicken you would like (quarter, half or whole) and then add some sides. For a personal order, a 1/4 chicken order with two sides is perfect. You will get 2-3 tortillas with it (and it's never enough tortillas!). You can choose from rice, two styles of beans, slaw or potatoes. Personally, the black beans and slaw are the way to go. The slaw is the perfect amount of citrus, vinegar, and that fresh snap of radish and cilantro. Get it! You won't be disappointed. You pay at the bar and take a seat, and wait for that sweet, sweet meat to get in your face. There are two picnic tables outside, and limited seating inside. I would suggest larger parties get the items to go, and relocate to the new Cully City park and have picnic. Two people can share a half order of chicken, and two medium sides, but you may want to throw in a third side ($3 extra) for good measure. As far as quality, taste, service and price point goes..I have been here twice in a week, they now know my order and I haven't broken the bank. It's just good, simple food.

Expensive, salty, boring. Honestly you can make chicken yourself, and it will taste better than this place and you don't have to waste $12 for barely half a chicken and you also won't have to be turned off the rest of the day thinking about how horrible the food was, how weird the service is, how much salt you ingested, or how you feel ripped off... Really?! Those sides?! They are cheap filler. Don't believe the hype, there is no love in this food.

  • Josh G.

I like it because it's close to my house and walkable. I'll keep it sweet and simple. I could do a better chicken but it's pretty good. Sides are done pretty well but the salsas are eh. The real treat are the tortillas which are best fresh! They are stingy w them tho... Order extra. I'm assuming all the hype will die down after a couple rounds of this bird! Good but overpriced... Will leave you wanting just a little more everything. Just a little more flavor, just a little more spice, Just a little more portion...

Didn't meet the hype, but still a quality meal. Chicken was decent, but a good bit away from great. For this to have become my go-to pollo spot, it needed to be great. Instead, I'll keep searching (I'm somewhat new to the area). The meat was quality and cooked nicely, but didn't have much flavor. I also prefer a crunchy and massively seasoned skin, but it was soggy and mildly seasoned. So... the flavor just wasn't really there for me. The cabbage and tortillas were a nice touch, but not enough to make the chicken [at the chicken place] great. Sides were outstanding. Had the rice and frijoles charros. A+ there. Folks complaining about the price? Sure, you can get $6 pollo and sides at a filthy and more authentic place (and the 'roided up bargain chicken may make your tastebuds sing a bit more), but $10 with sides is hardly overpriced. Still pretty cheap in my book. I'll be back for sure, but it's not a must-try spot by any means.

The chicken on the spit goes round and round, round and round, round and round. The chicken on the spit goes round and round just like it does at Costco. I will first and met that is a bit unfair to compare this chicken to that you can buy at the grocery store. The spices on the chicken itself are much better than the grocery store variety. The sides are also pretty delicious to be honest. Beyond that the biggest difference between this chicken and other rotisserie chicken is the price point. I feel like you pay a lot for really would just amounts to fairly good chicken. If your huge chicken fan, this is the place to go. The staff is super friendly, it is a cute joint and to me seems worth supporting. However it just made me want to go get some Mexican food down the street.

  • Arabella A.

Yes, I'm giving it five stars! Everything we ordered was delicious. Chicken was moist and flavorful. Not sure why some yelpers saying chicken is bland, not everything has to be overly seasoned to be good! Sides were also delicious and fresh. Having a son with food sensitivities, specifically wheat and dairy, happy to know that everything on the menu is wheat and dairy free. With exception to the beers.

Nestled into what could only be described as the typical tienda location you'll find Pollo Norté (Chicken North). Filled with friendly service, and better food they have been focused on their chicken game since opening 3 months ago. They may be experiencing growing pains along the way but are overall pretty together. The seasoning and texture of the chicken skin is something to be strived for, as is their cilantro lime sauce. The coleslaw is a nice contrast to the chicken and more significant items. Roasted cabbage was an unexpected but welcome addition to an already well prepared meal. The black beans have been subtly seasoned with onions presoaked in vinegar. They have mastered the art of tart with many if their dishes. Inexpensive and will certainly require a return.

Maybe I was just too excited to see a rotisserie chicken joint within walking distance to home. Maybe the great reviews set my expectations too high. I was hoping this would be a hands down, 5 star review. Sadly, it isn't. Popped in and ordered some lunch to go an hour after they opened. Got the half chicken meal for $16 to share. Cut up chicken atop roasted cabbage, 4 homemade tortillas, 2 small sides (we got pintos and potatoes) and 2 sides of salsa. Let's go... The chicken? Sighs... It was just ok. It was tender, however the skin wasn't crispy like some reviewers said. I also expected more flavor and a juicier chicken. Regardless, it was decent, tender chicken. Onto the tortillas... I actually liked it. Just a good, standard, homemade tortilla. Potatoes were good, but just didn't blow my mind. Pintos were tasty. I liked the smoky bacon in it, but it could've been just a TAD more tender. My favorite thing? The green salsa. Fresh, limey, hint of jalapeño and tasted great with the chicken. Least favorite was the other sauce, but it's only because I'm not a fan of the smoky, chipotle/adobo flavor. Overall, it's a great addition to the neighborhood. I think selling it as "Mexican rotisserie chicken" set me up to expect big flavors. I don't think the prices are outlandish. Its on par with similar restaurants within walking distance. It's obviously not Costco cheap, but it's a small batch, hipster joint with homemade sides, kind of chicken. Plus, you don't have an annual membership fee. *Oh! Random fact that threw me off. With the rotisserie right there and homemade beans and such being cooked, I didn't smell anything. You know how you walk into a restaurant (especially one this size) and are hit by the amazing smells?? It didn't exist here... So odd. I don't know why I thought I should share, I just am.

Not sure I get the hype. I thought the chicken was good, not great. Honestly it was only slightly better than the rotisserie chicken we get from New Seasons all the time - but at 4x the price and smaller. To be fair, you won't get freshly made tortillas and two sides from New Seasons, but still - $24 + tip for a small chicken, rice, beans and tortillas seems like a lot. The cabbage under the chicken was the best thing about the meal.

Well- it was good. However, I didn't fall in love with the place. Super uncomfortable from the parking lot to the seating. Cars were strewn about when we pulled in... parked at angles, parked blocking the entrance and parked with 3/4 of a spot between them because there were no painted lines whatsoever. Where to park was not immediately clear and I ended up parking in front of a house on the lot where I'm not sure if I was suppose to or not. Ordered a half chicken for my wife, my son and I. It was good but very dry in spots and the skin was rubbery not crisp. The sides were good but small. There are no tables- only bar style seating which is hard when you have a 2 year with you. Chairs were ridiculously uncomfortable. Overall it was good but I wouldn't return.

I wouldn't know the first thing about going into a Rotisserie restaurant. Yah, I can eat, I love chicken, but a whole bird? me...? It was a bit intimidating, but I wanted to try a new place. Atmosphere is quick, white, sort of a take out feel, but eating in is a perfect option if you can get a seat. Their overhead music was agreeable to me. I felt like I was in L.A. or just a very modern cool, hip place. The service was simple, good, thorough. The menu was simple as well, Rotisserie chicken, add sides if you'd like. Soda and alcoholic beverage options. The birds are delightful. I ordered a quarter and two sides - when it arrived, I thought, I am never going to eat this all. Well, I did. I was not dainty or cute about it. The chicken was moist, buttery, and of good quality. I put a small bit on a cute little tortilla and added green sauce. The two sauces I received. One was red, one Green. Red was good and smokey. The green was my favorite - a little more zest and bite to it. The sides I chose were fantastic and flavors galore. The Frijoles (Pinto) had great consistency and a good spice. Not hot, but tasty. The potatoes --- were a nice side as well, good texture and I used the Red Sauce on them. One of the most surprisingly tasty bits was the cabbage underneath my quarter chicken----so flavorful and buttery and salty. A great stop for lunch - and yes you can finish your plate(s). Draft beer, wine and some canned beer along with a few Mexican sodas. Restroom is painted a cool---but bright blue, clean. A cozy establishment and I think they might offer outside seating in the future. First time eating a completely Gluten Free Meal! Not on purpose.

Amazing food. Very tasty, not greasy, tons of flavor. This will definitely be our go-to for a somewhat healthy takeout dinner. The cabbage and onions were flavorful, the beans delicious and of course the tortillas are awesome.

Came here and picked up a half chicken with extra tortillas beans, rice, side of slaw and potatoes. The chicken was amazing. I saved the bones and made soup stock with them. Get the habanero sauce if you like spicy. It's amazing. The chicken is succulent and the skin tasty. Portion was just right for two. I'll definitely be back!

  • Andrew A.

On its own merit the food is great. The chicken is very juicy, I love the cabbage that's used in the rotisserie process. Both salsas are very flavorable, the tortilla's are homemade, and the Frijojes Charros (beans) have chunks of bacon. The slaw and rice were average. If you factor in price, my benchmark for local rotisserie chicken is Costco's ($4.99.) The dinner package from Pollo Norte is $24, so you're paying $19 for the fixings and a smaller chicken (albeit an ever so slightly better tasting chicken.) That is, as much as I enjoyed the food here, it's just too expensive. Another star downgrade is the preparation process and wait time. I know it's a new business, but they have some real efficiency issues. A basic operations and customer service class is much needed. I'm glad Pollo is in the neighborhood.

I love this place! I order the half chicken + sides and that is 3 meals for me. The chicken is moist and flavorful. The sides are great, especially the black beans. Yum!!

I ordered half a chicken, rice, slaw and three extra tortillas. Overall takeaway was, I agree with the people who say it is overrated. The chicken was dry. I don't care how many chickens you failed to sell today, OK? Selling chicken is not my business. When I buy chicken, let it be moist!!! That said, both sides were good. Not out of this world, but tasty. I'll note that the tortillas were not as good as I hoped, based on the pictures I saw on yelp. They weren't bad. My main complaint was with the chicken. On the service side, I was disappointed that my to-go order lacked forks and napkins. I wanted to eat that in the park and I stupidly tipped 15% for no reason on a to go order, considering that I had to go get those items from a gas station on my way to the park. Shame on me! Not recommended. Overrated, indeed.

Out of this world!!! Part way through the meal I was already planning my side dishes for my next meal there. The menu is simple but the slaw and potatoes were fabulous. The potatoes had surprise bacon (!) and the slaw was incredible. I generally prefer a creamy slaw but the lime dressing was just perfect and I've been dreaming of it ever since. And the chicken!!! Cooked just right, and the veggies served with the chicken are incredibly flavorful, having soaked up all the drippings from the rotisserie. The tortillas are hands down the best I've ever had. I'm ecstatic Pollo Norte has opened in our sleepy little Cully neighborhood!! A much needed change from all the burritos and pub grub!

So I finally got a chance to try this after all the hype I've been hearing. So sad that it didn't meet my expectations or the hype. I will give it one more try though. Everyone deserves a second chance. The chicken was very dry. Which I was surprised because it was fresh out of the oven. The sides ( black beans/ potatoes) were ok. Not great, just ok. The tortillas are good..I just always hope that a resturant that only does one thing has figured out how to do it perfect.

We stopped on the way home and got a chicken, black beans, rice and slaw. All were exceptional. We got some cabbage and jalapeños that the chicken was stacked on and those were epic! I'm always surprised what some chicken fat can do to cabbage!!!! Super staff and great beers on tap!!!!

Save your money. A bunch of Gringos trying to sell good Mexican pollo. You're better off going to Fred Meyers and getting a rotisserie chicken for half the price and appropriately spicing it yourself, and I am not talking about hot spices. I have spent many years all over Mexico and this isn't even in the ballpark. This is way Norte. More like Canadian Chicken. Try Angels instead.

Great chicken, great sides, and your green sauce is to die for with its freshness. I recommend the potatoes and pork pinto beans on the side! This is my new neighborhood spot!

When you do food in Portland, you kinda have to bring your A-game. Pollo Norte either didn't, or needs to cut their teeth in -- I dunno, Eugene? Salem? The rotisserie chicken is damn appealing, except that there is 100% ZERO seasoning to it. The skin is blonde, not very crispy, and totally unseasoned. It's just... cooked. It's cooked well, as in it was juicy, but it's just... cooked. On the bottom of the rotisserie there are potatoes and other veg absorbing the chicken drippings. They were good, but again -- nothing crunchy or texturally satisfying to them. They taste fine, but are ultimately mush. Tortillas are fresh, and taste good, but are a little too thick and pasty. The beans are also good. Salsas are decent, but nothing crave-able. It's also more of a takeout spot. The restaurant is way too small, and not insulated. If it's cold outside, it's just as cold inside. The crew doesn't seem to understand the concept of preparing food, either. Several times, they're closed when a restaurant should be open. It's as if they're trying to create a buzz by selling out daily. Instead, they're just frustrating people. I'm thinking they're not restauranteurs, and just happened upon a rotisserie for sale and space for lease. For $30, a whole chicken and a few sides should feed four. Instead, it gives four a chance at tasting the food. The sides aren't nearly big enough, and the chickens are nothing more than roasters you can get at the store for $5. You can do better. Those $5 roasted chickens at Safeway have more flavor, and you can even pick up sides for much less. At half the cost, you're getting more food that also tastes better -- at a grocery store. I also didn't get an overwhelming sense of 'Mexican' from the flavors. A kitchen full of white dudes doesn't help. Nobody here is Rick Bayless. In fact, someone should go do a stage at his place to learn a thing or 75.

Was curious to find out what this kind of chicken was all about. It and the sides were good and the service was quick and friendly enough. Proportions were equal to amount spent. Half chicken and two sides was good for 2 although had to order extra tortillas for making little tacos out of the chicken and sides. The salsa verde was awesome. Probably wouldn't go out of my way to have it again, but worth checking out if you are curious like I was. Just don't expect to be blown away as others would lead you to believe.

This place looks delicious upon arrival, but once you taste the chicken you'll realize the potential is there but just doesn't deliver. the other thing that really irked me is they forgot a side I had ordered. When I told them about it, they looked at me like I didn't even order it which i paid $2 extra for, then the cook yells ill throw in some free tortillas, except he wasn't even talking to me he was telling the random guy who just ordered at the register. I left with semi cold chicken and soggy sides.

Alright, I want you to understand the rest . . . We didn't call ahead, just sort of came here on a whim to grab a to-go order. Luckily, we were able to buy one of the last few chickens of the evening. We were told that the wait would be about 20-30 minutes, but it was well worth the wait. The staff was busy, busy, busy and the place is small, so honestly, I'm am surprised and impressed that they were as nice and polite as they were. I think if it were me, I'd tell everyone to stay quiet and let me think. Let me tell you again, this place is small. I already wrote about about how much I liked the food, so I'm going to do it again. We had the whole chicken with two large sides and it was exactly enough for my family of four. The only thing I think I'd do differently is ask of I could buy more tortillas. I'm not sure if that is an option, but we received 7 tortillas, so everyone except for me got two. I wanted another one. Do yourself a favor an head over to Pollo Norte. Te puedo asegurar que te va a gustar!

Ordered our food in advance to eat there and when we got there they had it boxed up and were visibly irritated when we told them that we had ordered for there, this made us very uncomfortable so we said that it was ok for the food to go. There were several eye rolls. I'm from South America, I've definitely had better rotisserie chicken that this one, this one was good, nothing exciting though. Very unwelcoming place. For the people working there, it's understandable that you are overwhelmed by demand but still have to make your place welcoming and treat your customers nicely.

This place needs to get there s**t together. Good. You are very busy and have just opened. I've been in twice and been told they dont have any more chicken. Hey, 5:30pm on a Thursday and you don't have any more food? Get it figured out. The girl at the counter told me, "We dont have anymore chicken tonight". Well really cool, how about saying " Im sorry, thanks for coming in, but...." Continue to have insufficient product, being short and rude to customers who have chosen your place to grab a bite and I will tell you, you wont last in NE Portland. There are way to many solid options for you to make it. Figure it out or your honeymoon experience will fade rapidly.

Whoah! Where did you come from Pollo Norte!? After seeing this place on the "new places" Yelp banner, I knew I had to give it a whirl. I've been so sadly disappointed by El Pollo Loco but the concept of the Mexican roast chicken has always intrigued me. I mean the concept of ANY roast chicken intrigues me, let's just focus on one nationality. I came in on a Sunday and was ready to order when the lady behind the counter informed me that they had sold out all their chickens and the next round was an hour away. Luckily we weren't totally famished and decided to go for a stroll around the dog park while we waited. They even conveniently took my phone number to call when our food was ready! Fast forward one hour and let's get to the nitty gritty! The menu is real straight forward. They have chicken. They have about five sides. They have handmade tortillas. They have cabbage. And they have a choice of beverages. The chicken- My girlfriend said it's the in the top five best she's ever had. She wasn't far off! It was SO good. The outside was all salty and peppery and crispy skin and the inside was so soft and pouring out juices. It was divine. The tortillas and cabbage and salsa- All these things come with any chicken order. The cabbage cooks under the roasting chicken and all the delicious juices drip on it while it roasts! Really tasty, but could have used some salt in my opinion, which was oddly absent from the tables in the dining area. The tortillas are made fresh to order and are the corny doughy rounds of perfection! I just wish there were more or the option to purchase more, we ran out about half the chicken through. You get two kinds of salsa, a red and a green. Of the two the green was the favorite for both of us. So zippy and fresh. The red was a chipotle based one and just wasn't of the caliber of the green. Our sides- We had the charro beans and the slaw. And holy cow, I'd order both as a meal on their own! The slaw was the epitome of fresh and snappy. Lot's of lime. The beans were full of crispy little nuggets of pork and were just so good! The people running the show here were about as nice as you can get and understand what good service means. One of the owners and I chatted for a bit after we were done eating about his chickens and the roaster( all the way from Mexico and a customs scandal to boot!) and his vision and passion for his work. That was a good experience! Oh yeah, and only $16 (pre-tip of course) for enough grub to fill two hungry eaters! I wish these guys the best in the coming years and hope to see more of them around the city!! PS- The place is SMALL inside. Don't bring a big group, get it to go!

First time at Pollo Norte and wow! Super minimalist menu that made me slightly hesitant, but after the first bite, all worries melted away. Incredibly seasoned chicken that made me eat skin and all! The side of pinto beans added loads of flavor along with the dripping absorbed potatoes! I loved every bite! And get your beer with lime juice and salt! Super interesting and delicious! Will definitely go again!

Welcome to the neighborhood Pollo Norte! I am so glad you have arrived here in the lovely Cully hood! I have ordered here for take out and was soooo impressed. There was a 20 minute wait for food and when we showed up there was a line out the door. Great to see the business is coming the this little joint. I am guessing there is a lot of word of mouth as I have heard a few people mention how great it is. Ordered the half chicken with a side of pinto beans, black beans, and rice. You start off choosing the chicken. Quarter, half, or whole chicken. All done rotisserie style. Chicken comes with homemade corn tortillas, roasted cabbage, onions, and salsas. The side options are pinto beans with bacon, pork shoulder, and chilis, black beans with epazote and pickled onions, rice, potatoes, and slaw. If you order a quarter chicken you get two small sides included for $10. A half chicken comes with two medium sides for $16. A whole chicken comes with two large sides for $24. The chicken is amazing. It is super moist. Full of flavor. The seasoning with sea salt, chilis, and lime is perfect! Of the sides we ordered I enjoyed the pinto beans the most. The soupy broth they come in is just full of that home-cooked comfort taste that really stuck with me. The black beans are a little on the salty side. The rice is good typical mexican rice. The cabbage was a major plus for this restaurant. Best cabbage I have ever had! The price for what you get here is spot on. I am so glad to have this place in the neighborhood. I will be back again soon for a nice cozy sit down experience. Thanks!

Straightforward and delicious. You don't have a lot of options here, the small array of menu items are all you need. Simple, delicious free range Chicken on a bed of perfectly (not too crunchy, not too soft) cooked cabbage & onions that have been baking in yummy chicken drippings. Tortillas are made in-house. Amazing fresh tasting salsas. Well priced for a filling meal, and you can pick up whole Rotisserie Chickens to go as well! A few good beers on tap, micheladas and all! The beans with pork are so good. Comfort food. Satisfying. You like Chicken? Check it out.

Fantastico! Simple elevated! If you just get the chicken you will miss out on the real gems that make this a great meal. Well...don't' miss the cabbage!! The sides are great and the salsas are fresh! How can you go wrong with potato's roasted in drippings. ;) My wife thinks if they added a just few more options like soup it would really be really balanced! Enjoy!!

When I saw the liquor license posted in a semi-abandoned garage on 42nd and Killingsworth, I was excited for more business to come in, but wondered if we needed another bar. Then on day, this cute rotisserie chicken place opened. Pollo Norte is a small rotisserie chicken joint, with great sides, and a solid draft list. It's natural, healthy, affordable, and quick, perfect for eating in or taking out any day of the week. I shared a whole chicken with sides of rice, beans, cole slaw, and potatoes. The chicken came with homemade tortillas, was nicely brined, crisp, juicy inside, and didn't need any weird spices or rubs to be outstanding. The pinto beans were brothy, spiced perfectly, the cole slaw was fresh with a light dressing with no mayo (woot!), and the baked potatoes had smoky bacon bits. Everything was outstanding! Meat eating neighbors of NE 42nd and farther afield: You can't miss out on Pollo Norte.

Ordered takeout from this little rotisserie joint and was pleasantly surprised! We ordered a whole chicken & 3 sides for $28 Chicken was definitely the best part of the meal. Cooked all the way through yet still tender, juicy, with great coloring and flavor on the skin. Comes on a half-bed of really delicious cabbage that has been cooked in chicken drippings (i wish they were a little more generous with the cabbage). Also came with awesome handmade tortillas that were a great texture - fluffy, semi-thick, and hearty enough to support a mountain of toppings. We ordered rice, potatoes, and frijoles charros as sides. They were all OK. Rice was pretty ordinary Spanish rice, roasted potatoes featured skin on, large chunks and whole baby potatoes with bacon (flavor wise, bacon is the dominant flavor, the potatoes had all of the seasoning pretty much only on the outside skin); the frijoles charros were a bit salty but my favorite side (soupy goodness with beans and bacon).

Nice little place with delicious Rotisserie Chicken served with fresh made tortillas, choice of yummy red or black frijoles..

Handmade tortillas! Roasted well seasoned chicken! Roasted home style potatoes! First time at this place and love it! Habanero sauce was good and perfectly spicy. The only reason this place doesn't get 5 stars from me is because the other salsas weren't spicy but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Will definitely be back! So glad to have found you in Portland.

Saw this place pop up on new places to try in PDX, its a bit of a drive from downtown, but I had some work in that area so gave it a shot. And boy is it worth the drive. Its a tiny place, and they have only rotisserie chicken. But they make it well. As in really well. Lip-smackingly good..Give this place a try out.. you won't be disappointed.

  • Jasper J.

That rotisserie chicken grill hanging over a huge bed of cabbage that absorbs all the yummy drippings front and center tho. Juicy perfectly cooked rotisserie chicken served with two sides of your choice. For those health conscious eaters concerned as much about taste as where their meat comes from. Free range, organic, and delicious w/housemade tortillas. Definitely coming back here.

Food was very tasty. That being said it was expensive for what you got and if you don't like Hip Hop then don't plan on eating in. The ice tea was $2 PER glass. And it was just plain iced tea no flavors or anything like that. Can purchase 4 cans of their sodas for the cost of one tea with a refill.

Chicken: GOOD! Tortillas: GOOD! Beans/rice/cabbage/slaw: GOOD! Salsa: Not good. The raw tomatillos in the green salsa have a really strong chlorophyll flavor and no heat of any kind. The red salsa is one note smokey with no heat and a notable lack of salt. They don't have to be hot (that's probably not what they are going for) but they do need to have an actual...taste.

Oh, Pollo Norte, how glad I am you exist. I'm from the southwest and have been missing good Mexican food. This place is now my saving grace! I'll stop in every time I'm in Portland. Sometimes the wait can be a bit, but the wait is worth it. Hurry in, they close when they sell out of chicken!

    (5)
  • Don D.

Ahhh... what a breath of fresh air Pollo Norte is. Simple offerings, done well. Really well. The pollo is perfect. Wonderfully succulent chicken surrounded by a perfectly crispy skin. My partner and I each had 1/4 Chicken meals (they come with two sides). We sampled the roasted potatoes, slaw, frijoles negros and rice. The frijoles were a little toothsome for my tastes (read: not tender) but everything else was excellent with the slaw being a standout. Well done Pollo Norte! Count me in as a regular.

    (5)
  • Yum E.

The sides are way better than the chicken. Nice slaw, beans, tortillas and cooked cabbage, especially. The chicken was pretty dry, lacked crispy massive skin, not particularly flavorful, and pretty small for $18 (a la carte). New Seasons makes much better chicken at half the price. I think I'd have to be forced or starving without options to go back for more. I'll give 'em another try in 6 months after they've had a little time to iron things out. It would also be very nice if they allowed customers to choose white or dark meat, like most pollo places.

This place is f*ckin' good! I was visiting Portland and had no idea about this place. Thank you, Yelp!

  • Julia B.

I feel duped. I drove all the way up to Pollo Norte, only to find yet another ethnic cuisine "gringofied". I ordered half a chicken for $16 and two sides, and the portion was tiny, as were the sides .I wanted potatoes but I don't eat pork and they roast them in pork drippings as well as chicken drippings, so that was out. The sides were tasty, but I can't help but feel that if there were an El Pollo Loco in the 'hood, the food would be just as good, bigger portions ( there's barely enough chicken for 2 in the 1/2 chicken for 2 people!!) and more reasonable. Malo! There's got to be an authentic pollo asado place in Portland, no?

    (2)
  • Cheryl Z.

Meh. Count me in the 'over-priced and bland" group. $18 is ridiculous for a rotisserie chicken and while the herbs on the skin were tasty, the meat was boring. The salsas were okay but didn't make up for the dull chicken. No way I'll go back, not at those prices. It seems like typical Portland hype. There are delicious Mexican restaurants nearby with lovely tacos at reasonable prices, so consider going there if you want genuine south-of-the-border flavors. And they'll be friendlier, I bet. Or pick up a rotisserie chicken from New Seasons ($9.99) and add sides from their deli case. Plus, I'm not sure why it took 15 minutes to take my (whole) chicken out of the case and put it in a box. There were no other customers.

Holy smokes, this place is good. My husband and I split a half chicken with two medium sides for lunch. The coleslaw was outstanding, and that grilled cabbage they serve under your chicken is magical. It was inexpensive and absolutely delicious. The owner was so nice and chatted with us while we ate our lunch at the counter. Cool environment with a simple and perfectly executed concept. I suspect these guys will be around for a very long time.

    (5)
  • J H.

I read the Oregonian article about how great and reasonably priced this place was, so we decided to try it out. We split the half chicken with two large sides, thinking that would be enough. It not only wasn't enough for two people, it was barely enough for one person. And for $18, seems like a bit of a rip off. One of the four pieces was a "drumstick" as big as my thumb...and I have dainty lady fingers. The flavors were ok, but I feel like for the portion size and the drive, I easily should have stayed home and made the same dinner myself.

    (2)
  • Bud R.

I generally buy a whole chicken to go. It seems that they always choose the smallest one they can find and cut it into unrecognizable pieces so I'm not really sure I'm getting a whole chicken. The chicken is way too salty and probably not real good for your blood pressure. In addition it is way over priced, twice the cost of Whole Foods roasted chicken. It's not worth a trip across town.

    (2)
  • Patrick W.

Based on the amount of publicity this place has gotten, I left feeling a little disappointed in the quality of the food. The chicken was tiny, under seasoned and dry. The beans and potatoes were similarly bland. The only parts of the meal that i really enjoyed were the tortillas, along with the fresh tomatillo and adobo sauces. I'll assume it was an off day for them and probably give it one more shot. Otherwise, Ole Frijole is right across the street and is far more affordable.

i was really intrigued by this place when i read about it, i love rotisserie chicken so i figured i'd give it a shot. walking in, i had high hopes... chickens browning on the rotisserie, finished ones stacked high ready to serve, cabbage & potatoes sautéing underneath cooking in the drippings, looked really promising. unfortunately, the taste just wasn't there for me... the chicken was pretty bland with little to no seasoning that i could pick up. potatoes were ok, but pretty soft and overdone. the best thing i had here were the black beans, which just aren't enough for me to make a return visit. maybe i'll try again down the road, we'll see.

  • David I.

I was able to secure some chicken. It's really nothing special. It's what you get from Fred Myer but with some dipping salsas and some tortillas. If you don't mind paying $12 for half a chicken go for it. Otherwise go elsewhere.

Oh boy, get here quick. This lil chicken shack is about to go boom. I can already see the lines forming with pollo-seekers frothing to get their hands on a bird before they run out for the day. And with such a cozy little establishment, they will run out daily I'm sure. My colleague and I were able to get our bird on, and it was delish. But the sides really shined. The pinto beans in bacony broth was utterly fantastic. I lapped up the liquid heaven like it was soup. I do wish that the sides were bigger-the medium seemed like a small. The house-made tortillas are also of particular note. The chicken itself is good, but I would still say that El Inka in the 'Ham has the corner on rotisserie chicken. The interior is small with counter-only seating. They have some beers and sodas to wash down your grub. I like when a restaurant does something right, keeps it simple, keeps their menu focused and delivers the flavor. This gem does that.

I really wish Yelp did half stars because they deserve 41/2. Went for lunch around 2 to avoid any possible crowd since the location seemed very small. We enjoyed lunch with the restaurant to ourselves. We ordered the whole chicken with 2 large sides and 1beer($29.00). It was a good amount of food but $29 seems a little high. Chicken was tasty but the legs were dry. Black beans, rice, and corn tortillas were very good. It comes with a red sauce (ok) and a green Verde sauce that was delicious! Cabbage was a very nice addition as well. Bottom line, its really good simple food. I thought the chicken could use more flavor and mousture. But good. I'm from Tigard and we rate places by would I come back. I think I would for this place.

So, went we went here this afternoon and the rotisserie chicken would be something that you would find at Safeway did have light seasoning could have had more we got the pinto beans which were very good we got the potatoes which were roasted underneath the chicken and had the drippings made potatoes potatoes like a potato goulash and they were good . The tortillas were the bomb the bomb.com . Com don't expect the cole slaw to be slaw. It's more like a parsley red onion carrot radish and cabbage limey zesty salad which I didn't mind but I want more chicken for my half ass kickin chicken..... Go here try it out and see for yourself. Yo boy youngin NB

Finally Rotisserie Chicken in Portland! Great sides and salsas to go with unbelievably good rotisserie chicken and fresh tortillas make this place a must if you are in the area. The frijoles charros are amazing and full of bacon! The potato's are cooked in the drippings from the chicken. I plan to grab a to go order on my way home for work when I don't have time to cook dinner.

The best new restaurant in Portland. I'm a vegetarian because I don't like meat, but I was convinced to try a bite of the chicken and it was delicious. Pair the chicken with some incredible sides, killer homemde tortillas, and great micheladas for an out of this world combo. The place is small, so come early but the staff was incredibly nice and courteous. Will definitely be coming back and receommending to my friends.

The cabbage with drippings and the tortillas are a 5. So good! The chicken though, not bad, not great, white meat pretty dry and bland, drumstick was better but nothing to write home bout. Potatoes and green salsa were pretty good. The brown sauce didn't make sense. Too bad they were out of the charros beans. Wish I could say I'd be back to try some other menu items, but that's about it. That's some good advice to Pollo Norte, expand the menu please.

We've lived in Mexico and have had awesome rotisserie chicken wirh fantastic sides and delicious home made tortillas... i was super excited to try this place. That being said.... it was 4 pm and it was one of the first days open. But they were completely out of chicken and I had to go back 45 minutes later to pick up the food I paid for... other people on here seem to like the cabbage but my daughter couldn't stand the smell in the car... and, sorry but those were the smallest and driest tortillas I've ever had. The girl at the counter was nice enough but the other people seemed to be stuck up... unfortunately we won't be returning.. good luck..

I would love to give a review, but did not get the opportunity. My friends and I showed up at 2pm on a Saturday for lunch, walked in and were told they would not have any chicken until 5:30. I'm not saying it is a bad place, and would be open to trying again. Maybe some better planning may help on their end. Looking forward to trying.

The flavor and the seasoning of the chicken was really good. The potatoes were also delicious. The slaw was bland but the cilantro in it made it a bit better. I'd go back here again if I wanted to pick up a chicken for dinner but it's not gonna be my go to spot for Mexican food.

Super tasty sides, delicious tortillas, and chicken. The menu is simple, like this chicken shack. I've already been three times, and it's a crowd pleaser: the kiddo loves it, I love it, and my visiting food-phobic mom loves it. The salsas are flavorful, the charros beans are stupid good.

I showed up w/a friend for lunch on New Years eve day, only to find them closed. So, tonight went for dinner (called first to make sure they were open). It's a very small space, maybe 15 seats, which makes it cozy, try to sit along the kitchen area (warmer in the winter + you can watch the action). We had 1/2 chicken + 2 medium sides. The chicken comes with amazing onions & cabbage cooked under the rotisserie chicken, soaking up all the chicken drippings. Also included are handmade tortillas and 2 salsas. Chicken was moist inside, crispy outside, perfect. We choose potatoes and rice as our sides Our sides seemed on the small side to be called medium. Both were ok, the potatoes have bacon, so if you don't eat pork ( my dining companion), don't order these. It would be helpful to have that listed on the menu. Also, the menu description of the rice mentioned tomatoes, carrots, garlic and oregano. They must be cooked down, because there were no chunks of these, just what's often called "Spanish" rice. Coleslaw looked great. Friendly, busy staff. 80% of their business is take out, so, when you get there during peak dinner time (5 pm & after) to dine in, you will wait 30+ minutes for your meal because there are take out orders ahead of you. So relax , have a beer and watch the rotisserie go round...

Delicious!! The chicken was moist and fell right off the bone. The sides are great, the slaw is the best! Call or get there early because they run out fast!

Quality and Quantity is good. Taste is great. Homemade tortillas are fantastic. According to the staff they are expanding their fridge space so they can cook more chicken since they currently run out on a daily basis. I'll make sure to get this place into my regular take-out rotation.

A better name might be el Pollo Gringo.... The chicken was pretty good, the sides were tasty but small (we got frijoles charros and potatoes) My husband is from Mexico and I have lived there and eaten many roasted chicken dinners in different parts of the country... this is not an authentic experience, and that has a lot to do with two foundational components of the meal: the salsa and the tortillas The tortillas are quite simply some of the worst I have ever had, I am not sure what happened there but they are dry and doughy at the same time... it was clear these tortillas had not inflated while cooking, which is very important in order to end up with a well-made tortilla! From what I could tell the tortilla is simply grilled for too long on either side.... The salsa was ok, but rather bland. Overall, the meal was alright, but for the price ($24 for whole bird, 8 tortillas and two sides) we will probably not return...

Love this place! Count me in as a regular too:) We decided to eat there.. ( there were lots of take out going out the door) We each had 1/4 chicken with both beans, slaw and rice.. Oh, and the cabbage!..all excellent! Especially love the sauces and the tortillas were also great. I can see an addiction happening.. Glad its not far from home.

  • Sheila J.

I was really excited about this chicken shop and the menu looks great. The chicken is good and tender but honestly I agree with several other reviewers... underseasoned and the white parts of the meat is dry. The price is good for a whole roasted chicken with tortillas, cabbage, salsa but it underwhelmed me.

  • Joanna B.

Wanted to pick up dinner on the way to get out of town guests. Called my order in 2 hours ahead. Wasn't ready when I got there. Then they didn't have the side I wanted, it would be another 10. Explained that I was on way to pick up visitors. They subbed with potatoes & didn't comp. poor form Pollo Norte. That's how you lose customers.

  • Eric O.

Very good food and very reasonably priced. The one main menu item is rotisserie chicken and then a small variety of sides. It's exciting to see this kind of place come to 42nd. Will definitely be a regular now. And everything but the beer is gluten free!

  • Hapless C.

So FAWKING good! Portions served on a bed of grilled onion and cabbage cooked under the rotisserie so as to soak up all the drippings. I highly recommend the coleslaw side and the tortillas are the quiet star of the altogether quality meal. Its so cozy inside, it will be a shame once this place is discovered and it will be standing room only, but this place is definitely worth the inevitable wait in line.

I'm not sure that I have any advice about how to improve this new restaurant. I ordered my chicken ahead of time, a whole chicken with 2 sides: black beans and potatoes. My food was ready on time, the staff was super friendly. The food was excellent. I loved the little tortillas it came with. I really like the straight forwardness of the place; when they are out of chicken... they are out of chicken. Awesome addition to the NE 42nd neighborhood.

  • Asher J.

Whoa! This place is a hidden treasure - I had no idea on how good this was going to be. The chicken is incredible and potatoes spectacular. I eat a lot of chicken so it takes a lot to impress me and this place did the trick.

  • Wendy G.

Really great food, will definitely go here again. Great service, good people. It's a small place, so there isn't always room to stay. Also, the chickens are somewhat small, but I like that they aren't processed food and was super tasty. Loved the side dishes. Highly recommend!!

Amazing local business! Love the food and the staff is great. You won't find chicken this delicious (or even in this style) anywhere else in Oregon.

  • Lauren C.

Good luck trying to even get food here. First time they were out of chicken on a Thursday around 5pm that's fine a little strange though considering they close at 9pm. Second time to avoid going when they are out of food I came in a little after 11am when they open and to my surprise the food was not ready it took almost an hour to get food I find this so ridiculous. The food was ok but such a pain to get I will not be coming back and when people are waiting for food the cooks making it should not brag about how pretentious they are good luck with your new restaurant!

Great place! The food was excellent and service impeccable. The place is small so it is better if you order take out in advance.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
