Awesome salad rolls. Drove by this place for years but never stopped. Excellent. I will definitely be back to try more of the menu. Great job.

The lunches Prices are great! For $4.95 I got a banh mi sandwhich (Tofu) and a iced vietnamese coffee. The sandwhich was a good portion for lunch, and had a great flavor. The space is a little dive-y and could use some fixing up, but the staff is very nice. I will be back.

We bought a groupon for three 15 dollar trips to this place, because Pho. I really REALLY wanted to love this place, because I see that it's a family owned business, but it wasn't our style. The first time we came in, we sat down a foot from another family who was very apparently suffering (as a family) from what appeared to be h1n1 (I'm exaggerating, but they were noticeably very ill). Their children continually came up to our table to stare at us an then start screaming the way children sometimes do when, well... when their parents don't care if they're annoying the hell out of a couple who is trying to peacefully enjoy their meal. This made it hard to enjoy the food, so we figured next time would be a better experience. The next time, we were in one of those "in between" pay day kind of modes and stopped in to redeem another Groupon and enjoy some pho on a cold rainy day. The food was ok, but it wasn't anything spectacular. We have a favorite pho place on ne 82nd that we frequent, so it would already take quite a bit to make us favor a new place over the old one. That didn't happen. The food was satisfying, but not superior to our already favorite place. The atmosphere was a bit stale on all three occasions. Perhaps we came in at awkward times, but it was a bit too quiet in the restaurant when we came so the girl at the register tried desperately to occupy her eyes one her laptop or the tv, but couldn't help glancing at us frequently because there was little else to focus on, making things slightly awkward. They have some good specials, and have a strong business, so I'm happy that we checked them out!

It was okay. We, Groupon in hand, decided to go and tried their pho. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't good enough to go across 205 for. One thing I didn't like was that the soda was advertised as a "fountain drink". What does fountain drink mean? What I received was a can of soda with a cup of ice, no straw. It's small potatoes and the food was ok. But I just wouldn't make a special trip for this.

The most critical aspect of a good pho is the broth, and I feel like Pho Thien does an above average job in this respect. In fact, I would say that the flavor in the broth was the second best (next to Luc Lac) that I've had. So, if this is all you are about and this restaurant is in a convenient location for you, it might be your new spot for dinner or take out on the cheap. Unfortunately, this is where the good things end for Pho Thien. I began to have reservations about this place from the moment I saw the parking lot. It is not easy to park there and certainly not to back up into the main street to get out. The inside of the restaurant is a little sad (as is the outside) and the murals on the wall do not really fit in with the restaurant for me. The Jazz music in the background was definitely out of place for a pho restaurant. The servers were both very bleh and added absolutely nothing to our experience. We were asked if we were ready to order in less than 5 minutes from entering the front door. They have something like 50+ meals, so any normal human needs more than 2 minutes to even just read through it. They weren't rude but they definitely weren't warm and inviting. Again, the pho was pretty good, especially the broth. I liked the fresh basil still on the stem that accompanied the soup. My gf ordered the regular sized soup with lean brisket and only got 3 slices of meat. Even for a 115 girl this was not enough. I got the signature dish (the Pho Thien). Definitely had enough meat but I didn't like all of them. The meatballs were downright bad, and and fatty brisket and the tripe were not my thing either. Would have preferred veggies to the meats! When we were done with our meal, we waited. And waited. And waited. Nothing. No bill. Didn't check in with us. The same thing was happening with the couple next to us, who eventually asked for a check and were told they could go up front to pay...that was definitely not made clear anywhere and I found it a little annoying that they would have just let us wait forever. Overall, I probably wouldn't even go back if I was in the area. Maybe for takeout if it was super convenient and I was craving pho, but otherwise my experience was very lackluster.

I've been going to this place for years. They always remember me, which isn't entirely why I go, though it's nice to be remembered, even if I don't show up for a while. I go because not only is the service really friendly and fast, but the broth is very fragrant. I always get the number 1, which they always seem to remember. I come in and they ask, "Number 1?" I enjoy this place out of all the pho places Eastside not just because they have my order memoried, but because somehow this place always has subtle flavors that I feel is lacking at many other establishments. At this point, I've taken my family from L.A. here, and I've driven some nice, warm beef noodle soup out to my friends in NoPo, and all can agree that this place has something special. I'd say it's the charm and that they always remember me (because I'm biased like that). But my friends would probably say that it's the way the broth is spiced. It just has a little something extra! So I'd hope you'd try this place for the pho and come back time and time again and get to know the great people, too.

Pho Thien is awesome! we eat Pho 3-4 times per month and we have visited all of the top ranked usual suspects including Oregon Pho. The broth at Pho Thien is as good as any I have tasted and definitely one of the tops! and if we're closer to my home I would eat here more often. Don't be fooled by the size of the building- try it out and I think you will find what I have found.

Veggie salad rolls were fresh and tasty. They were stuffed with chewy fried tofu, rice noodles, lettuce and basil. The place was empty and we had courteous service and very simple well made meals for less than the going rate. Plus a 10 percent off Yelp coupon when we checked in! Way to go Yelp! The avocado smoothie wasn't too sweet and the owner was charming. A family run place that makes me want to be a regular,

I enjoyed the fresh spring rolls they tasted good. The Rice noodles plate (I forgot which, but it has shrimp, grilled pork, thai basil, peanuts, sprouts, cilantro, and the rice noodles - that's why I came there. It was okay, but I was really left wanting more - I miss that charred flavor on grilled shrimp and pork that I got from @pho that I was really wanting from here. I think they probably just do a normal saute in a pan (something I could have done at home). From what I said above, I would have left them with 3 stars. But then came the dreaded ban mi that I got from these guys. The bread was overcooked (too crisp and dried out - scraping the top of my mouth, unpleasant to eat), and there wasn't nearly enough meat or veggies in my sandwiches at all. I shall remain a loyal customer of Best Baguette for these. Fellow Yelper, please do not make your sole decision off of my review - this is all based on my perspective from having really awesome food and I have a very particular preference - I think I might be a food snob because I've gone off of other reviews and found that some spots that are ranked high, were total crap when I actually got there. Okay well take care.

I love Pho. No seriously, I love Pho. When I am not feeling 100% I always look to Pho to help me feel better. I stopped in here late one rainy day. I was the only person in the restaurant and the service was very prompt. The Pho was good but not as good as I'd hoped it would be. I am still trying to find my favorite Portland Pho spot.

Very friendly service! Not very impressive kind of a hole in the wall but excellent pho! The salad rolls were not the best but the fried rice was delicious!

Disclaimer: I rate on food quality, not ambience. Secondly, I'm from OC, so there is nothing comparable in all of Oregon. Some people pay for ambience. To go to a fancy place with molecular gastronomy, where you don't know what you are eating but boy does it look fancy! And sometimes you just get an interesting experience for free. That was what happened to me here. The lady doesn't speak any English, so she called another person on her cellphone to have him take the order. Then the same thing when I was ready to pay-I swiped my own credit card after she called him and wrote it down for me (Arabic numerals are universal, except in Arabia). I think having going to a place where they speak only Vietnamese makes pho more authentic, even though in OC they all know some basic English. The inside is very homey, not the standard linoleum tables lined up row after row (and with numbers on the side) that is more sterile and business-like, but the food was still served quickly and had all the standard accoutrements (hot sauce on the side, grab your own green plastic chopsticks or white ladles). It felt good to taste the Vietnamese rice noodles again. The soup was ok, the meat wasn't particularly tender, the shrimp wasn't old or tough. So the food is ok. But it definitely is a great place to go just to experience something else, something different, something like you are in another country (non-English speaking, that is).

Yum, yum, yum, yum YUM!!!!! Authentic and cozy, this feels like a little family place (I'm sure it is) where the recipes have been passed down through generations. The Pho with Brisket (#9 on menu I think) was amazing and i will definitely order it again and visit before i head back to Miami, but I could seriously have eaten everything, including the new tasty dishes that are currently pasted on the table. Don't miss this tasty little gem!

Went here three times, because I really wanted to like this place. First, the ambiance is really strange. I don't need to see your vacuum cleaner while trying to enjoy a meal, nor do I need the sound of the TV and the radio competing for my attention. I could live with all of the above if the food was good, but it's just "Meh". VERY bland, the salad rolls are probably the most boring ones I have ever tasted. While made fresh to order (as they should be), they're just boring and bland. The soups are equally bland. No kick, no nice spice, just "Meh". We asked for a seafood soup, and the owner told us that they don't have such thing, although a few minutes later I discovered it on the "specials". (Mind you, these are not daily changing specials.) Each time we were there, the owner tried to make polite conversation when we paid. It ended up sounding more like an interrogation: "Where you go now?!!!?" It was humorous, though it had a sad, desperate overtone. Overall an "OK" place when in a rush, but there is SO much better in the general area. (Hanoi Kitchen just being one a 3-minute drive west on Glisan). I gave this place 3 sincere attempts, but have to say for now I'm out. Perhaps the owner will read the reviews instead of watching TV all day, and improve his restaurant. He has a great location. Now give us great food and we'll be regulars and bring friends, too.

Yup, tasty pho, yummy salad rolls, hot tea and friendly people. It delivered as expected and hit the spot on a cold, rainy night.

Wouldn't think much when seeing it from the outside. But don't judge a book by its cover they say. This place offers fresh ingredients and flavorful broth. The chicken pho was phenomenal and the fresh shrimp salad roll was not only big in portion but colorful and delicious. Will definitely be back for more.

One of my stop to places when I am in the area. Family run comfort food. Today, I had a cold so the daily special of chicken soup was perfect. Curry is great too. Seasoned to your liking.

Groupon: $15 for three trips The food - I got grilled pork with rice. Portions were decent, tasted ok, except the meat wasn't grill. It was pan fried. I was very disappointed but didn't complain. My boyfriend ordered a large bowl of pho which had three or four pieces of meat. Still, no complaints. When I went up to pay for the meal, the owner was VERY angry that we only bought only two items. He said that he would have told us the rules of Groupon had he had told him before we ordered. Then he goes on to asking us how the business is supposed to make any money if Groupon takes all of it and we only buy two items. Apparently the fine print which says "must purchase one food items" really means "must purchase THREE food items" (according to the owners). If you don't like Groupon customers, how about not offering one. This was finally the tipping point for me. I filed a complaint to Groupon and will be getting refunded for the last two vouchers. Never have I had such an unpleasant dining experience - Groupon, or not.

I'm on a vision quest to try out as many pho joints as possible. This quest is something that I began many moons ago and then paused for some time as I fell in to the HaVL/Pho Oregon rut. And nothing bad has happened to either of those joints, but they say variety is the spice of life, and I like things searing hot. Pho Thien is another stop on my tour, and one that is A-OK. The space is small and seems to be falling apart. The broth is hot and decently seasoned - not too heavy on any one element. But it also doesn't stand out much. Meat and noodle portions are appropriate and overall as a bowl it's not something I'd turn down nor would it be something I'd come running back for. That said, the folks that work here are plenty nice and friendly and given the location, they provide a friendly place to post up with a piping hot bowl.

One of my favorite pho places in town. They don't have wine or beer, which is kind of a drag. But they do have wi-fi and good table service. The owner has a good memory.

Portland nearly changed its name last year to Pholand in homage to all of the excellent ethnic soup kitchens in town and Pho Thien ranks among the best. Sixteen different beef pho entries are available, along with a pho ga (chicken) and pho tom (shrimp). They also offer the spicy bun bo hue and seafood hu tieu soups. I went with the Pho Dac Biet, No. 1 on the menu, which includes slices of round steak, flank, fatty brisket, tendon, tripe and meatballs. The meat and noodles were plentiful and the broth was very tasty. A plate of basil leaves, bean sprouts, jalapeño slices and a wedge of lime accompanied the bowl of soup. I also ordered salad rolls, rice paper filled with shrimp, chicken, noodles, basil, lettuce and served with a peanut sauce. They were very flavorful. The staff was friendly and attentive. Pho Thien may be off the beaten path, but it's easy to get to just west of Interstate 205 on Glisan.

Probably the best vegetarian pho in Portland. As some have stated, the broth is very good; it's flavour leans on the side of roasted ginger, which is how I like it. The quality of the noodle isn't too bad either. IMO, it is these two ingredients that really make or break the quality of the pho, and these guys know how to serve up a quality soup. Finally, the portion is just about right for the price; and perhaps leans on the generous side of value.

Got a cold? Congested sinuses? Sure, I'm sure you've heard of Pho when you're trying to clear your cold, but have you ever tried Bun Bo Hue, Pho's spicy (and sometimes wild) sister? I was craving BBH one cold night in Ptown when I called a local Viet restaurant I was famililar with. To my shock and awe I was told they didn't carry the dish... but how? It's so classic. So pungent. So meaty... So Vietnamese! When I ended up calling Pho Thien, I immediately got an answer and put in a to-go order. This place does epitomize the classic "hole in the wall" theme, since it's family owned and isn't some posh pretentious joint. I do think this place would be more well-known if the location wasn't as obscure (as it's a little hard to spot), but I'll say it's worth the find. When it comes to Viet food, I usually score it by rating whether or not the chef made the food as if it were for family- I truly believe this dish was made like it was. Generously portioned; sweet, spicy, with bits of onion, crunchy peppers, fresh vegetables... Wow, I'm starting to get hungry again. A solid 4 stars for the place that made my sinuses very, very happy.

The food is fantastic! Andy does a great job in the kitchen and I have never had a bad experience with the food. In my opinion, he has the best broth around which to me makes the soup. We usually always have issues with parking and the building is aged but Andy makes the best with what he has. Enjoy!

Best pho in Portland that I have discovered since relocating here. The owner was tentative to our needs and very nice! They gave us tea while we waited for our food. The food was delicious. What will bring us back ultimately other than the good food was the atmosphere. We felt the "family atmosphere" and it was MORE than welcoming.

  • Dave D.

Friendly owner and staff, and authentic decent quality pho. I really enjoyed the broth flavor. I got the signature pho thien soup, which had a couple fatty meats that I didn't care for, although there was plenty of good meats so I just left the ones I didn't care for. I particularly enjoyed the shrimp, so next time I'll just stick with that.

The hotel recommended this spot to us. It's next to a medical marijuana place which gave us a good laugh. I had the veggie pho and my co worker had phad thai with chicken. The veggie pho only came with tofu and none of the vegetables listed in the menu. It is kind of irritating to me when restaurants do that! We ended up asking for the vegetables which helped. We also got the vegetarian fresh rolls which came with some peanut sauce and was enjoyable. The pho here was $6 which is cheaper than Seattle pho. It was ok but I have had better pho in Seattle.

I work up the road from this place, and it is TASTY. As I've mentioned before, it's difficult to find great food in this part of town, but this is about as good as Pho gets! East side, west side, doesn't matter the side, this is the spot for the best Pho in town. The broth is amazing, and I've even branched out to their Pad Thai, which I also consider to be among the best I've had.

  • Lee S.

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because I don't think I've tried enough other Pho places yet so I can't judge it the best there is, yet. But so far, this is one of the best I've been to. I'm new to Pho so the owner, Andy, is super helpful in guiding me on what to order and new things to try. The spicey noodles soup is The Best I've had so far. And I've tried that at every Pho place I've gone to. I would definitely recommend this place. Super good!

Groupon visit. Guess broth was pretty good but unfortunately that was the end of the highlights. Perhaps 5 pieces of meat and bland service. Can tell nice family run business so do wish nothing but the best. Not a trip I would make again or recommend to others. Again many other choices in the city. Oh and the spring rolls were not very fresh.

Pho was so-so. For a place with "pho" in their name, I expected better. Salad rolls were plump but missing a couple key ingredients and they use chicken instead of pork. Less favors. Peanut sauce was smooth and creamy but kind of bland. I think their star dishes are probably the less common noodle soup like bun rieu (rice noodle with crab paste), canh bun rau muong (like bun rieu with water spinach) and bun bo hue. Their canh bun rau muong was exactly like the way I remember my first bowl of it at a friend's house. The "crab paste" was fluffy and melty and the broth was rich and deeelicious.

Took a friend here for lunch the other day to use the half-price deal certificate I purchased online. The place is clean and simply decorated. It can probably accommodate about 30 people. The guy cashier is okay but doesn't seem to be in the mood for smiling, just going thru the motion of getting our orders. It was a little past lunch hour and since we were the only guests at the time, the food came quickly as expected. Dishes are reasonably priced. We requested for an extra plate, bowl, cup, and shared the food together. There were a couple of lady servers and they were both nice and polite. Fresh salad rolls : It was okay and the peanut sauce is tasty. Pho #1 (with beef/pork/meatball) : My friend said she liked it well. I also liked it although the broth is a little salty to my taste. Chicken /Shrimp Pad Thai (mild spicy ): Surprisingly delicious, and that's saying something because I'm not really a pad thai fan. Chicken/rice dish : I can't remember exactly the name of what we ordered but it was good. Fresh avocado shake : Thick and creamy and so good. I will be back and can't wait to try their durian shake and jackfruit shake next time.

This is the best pho I have ever had in my life. I asked my server what he would recommend, he pointed me toward the house special, which seemed it included a little but of each meat option. The broth was stunning and each of the meats were tasty and fresh. I don't know what they do to make there broth so flavorful but all other pho restaurants should take note!

Yummy pho, close to home. I'm just bummed that my husband isn't a fan of pho and was not impressed with their pad Thai. I just go with friends when I'm in the mood.

So many Vietnamese options in Portland and this one is pretty solid. Not the best, but far from the worst. The staff is SUPER friendly. I waited to take my order and the owner chatted it up with me the whole time. I drive past this location every day on the way home from work but never noticed it before. Plan to stop by again in the future!

Love it here. A nice FAMILY run business. Sometimes you will be greeted by a child who is doing homework at the front counter. They remember who we are, and always ask if we want our usual. I'm glad they remember what it is, because we don't. Yet it is always brought out fast and taste great. I wish I could remember what it was (Maybe the #40) so I could recommend it. In my opinion, they have the best fried tofu in all of Portland. Something about the taste and texture that no other place has. It's great. They also serve Thai Iced Coffee. Only downside is the lighting and decor could be a little better.

I love supporting local family restaurants BUT came here for first dine-in experience with a Groupon(had purchased to-go orders previously which is why we kept coming back) I ordered the infamous Pho soup and my husband ordered pad Thai. We were disappointed, when we told him we had a groupon because he seemed upset we had purchased one and said we needed to order more than two meals( but there was two of us) unfortunately we never saw him again, non the less did he check in with us to make sure everything was tasting good or our drinks were filled(only people in the restaurant) Compared to the to-go orders we had before, this meal was sadly smaller than the "large" we ordered for our to-go's than our "large" dine in. I don't want to say our customer service and portion sizes were due to our groupon but it's unfortunate it seemed that way. If you don't like your customers to use a groupon don't put one out there to purchase. I hope the customer service and family restaurant does better than our dine-in experience.

Pho Thien does the best broth I've had in Portland so far. I'm a fan of their Bun Bo Hue and haven't tried much more from the menu. I predict that when my workplace relocates to Gateway in a couple of years, I'll probably start working my way down the list and I'm looking forward to it.

A dive bar of pho restaurants.... small place, pretty friendly staff, cheap prices. Broth was decent not too disappointed until we went to pay and could look back into the kitchen. They had 2 large bins of onions stacked right next to the bleach and other opened cleaning supplies including rain x. Would not go back and hopefully the health department makes a stop.

It had been about 2 or 3 years since I ate here. I went here last night for some veggie pho; it was yummy; lots of veggies, tasty broth (don't think it was vegetarian broth), just the right amount of noodles, and most important of all it warmed me right up.

Even though I live across the street for a year and a half, it's my first time coming here and I ordered beef drunken noodles and my girlfriend ordered chicken pad thai, both about medium in spiciness, the food came out fast with 10 minutes and it was cheap and filling. Wish I came here sooner.

Best vietnamese food I've ever had, which is why I come back. I phone in my orders and just by saying "i'd liek to make a to-go order" the guy who works there goes "number 35? i'll see you in ten" I've always had it, its always fresh, i've tried their pad thai as well which is good, their pho soup is amazing, its a family run business and they make great everything. its all cooked in a kitchen like a house, and you can tell that the lady who makes it knows what she is doing always fresh, always tasty, and i always tip a large amount.

Pho was not bad, could be more flavorful. The teriryaki chicken and rice not bad, didn't really have much with it (as far as veggies, egg patty, etc...) Not much to say here, got it buy one get one free with Entertainment book coupon. But wouldn't go back as it didn't stand out at all in comparison to other places, but for BOGOF it worked.

This place was a little depressing because it was so damn empty.. Super authentic food and no frills in the decor, but really tasty. I had the tofu noodle soup, which came with a whole stalk of fresh basil, giant pile of bean sprouts, and jalepenos. I ate the whole bowl even though my stomach was ready to explode. Boyfriend had the blood soup (sounds gross but all meat has blood in it, ya know?) I had a bite and it was spicy, delicious and flavorful. Please go there so it's not so empty and depressing.

Good quality food but a limited selection. No seafood pho, a major disapointment for my San Jose/ Westminister, CA taste buds. (Ann L. I am educating the folks on the campaign how to pronounce "pho." Think like "fa" people.) Anyways, the meaty, flank filled pho I did get was very good by most standards and the place was clean and had polite service. It was a little slow but sometimes Americans need to slow the lunchtime eating down a little.

This has been a regular stop for my co-workers and I for the past 3 years. We are all in agreement that this is the best Pho for your buck in this are of town. We nicknamed it "The Pink Place" because of the color of the building. I think internet searches will still show that...but, they recently painted the building and it is far more aesthetically pleasing. OK, on to the inside. Also recently remodeled, lots of windows, plenty of seating, an area that is somewhat separated from the main dining area. Each table is set up with the standard sauces, chop sticks, spoons etc. The staff, well, after a couple of visits, they knew what we ordered and didn't even bother bringing the menus. They are kind, courteous and welcoming....never a problem with the service here...EVER!!! Sometimes there are up to 6 or 8 of us. The meals usually arrive at the same time. While I stick with the Super Bowl, some of my colleagues order from the lunch menu. Not once has anyone complained about their meal...that is why after three years...we keep coming back.

Tried this place for the first time today. The owner was very friendly and obviously proud of his food. Had the pho with tai (round steak); really enjoyed the sweet flavor of the broth and the homemade sriracha-type sauce. The $5 lunch special is a great deal. I'll be back the next time I'm in this part of town.

Authentic Vietnamese food at good prices. The pho was tasty, lots of noodles and meat. The broth has a sweet flavor, cinnamon or star anise? The vermicelli bowl also was loaded with meat, bean sprouts, basil and noodles. The building is old and pink; looks like it was previously an old lady salon, but the inside is clean and soothing. Service is a little slow. I'd come back for more.

Very good! Had the tofu spring rolls and the tofu pho. Spring rolls were excellent. Everything was very fresh. My boyfriend (Viet food LOVER) had some vermicelli noodle & meat dish and he liked it a lot. Came with a sweeter version of fish sauce. Service was great- guy was very nice. Food came fast. The Vietnamese coffee taste just like what I had in Vietnam-- STRONG. Clean interior. Just moved to that area so we will defiantly be back for more. They also offer take out, although he didn't have a take home menu. We had two entrees, an appetizer and two Viet coffees for $24, so cheap too.

Good food and extremely good and friendly service. I asked if I could sit outside at the one table. She said "Sure, but be careful." "Careful of what?" I asked. She pointed out a little nest on the rail near me, with a few wasps buzzing around. "But they are friendly," she assured me. Sure enough, they were. The warm heart of this restaurant rubs off even on wasps.
