It's been a while since I went to Nuvrei. Since spring to give a rough estimate. The croissants melted in your mouth. The tea, invigorating. 5 stars. I always tied the word, "remodeling" with its synonyms "fix" or "upgrade". What I witnessed was far from that. The pastries - downsized. The menu - downsized. Most important of all, my respect for their bakery, you guessed it - downsized. This cafe's expectations are about on par with St. Honoré. Actually, at this point I'd rather travel out to the shitty alphabet district and spend my money there because at least I expect half ass croissants. I couldn't stress enough how you let me down. I was hoping to dig into a bacon croissant, the best option on the menu other than your grilled cheese. Instead I got this greasy ham and cheese pile of salt you guys call a croissant. I never hesitated going in on a busy day and waiting half an hour for my food. I knew your team would fulfill my expectations every time. I'm sad to say those days have gone down hill. Please give me hope that not all is lost. P.S. Your bagels are good. But definitely not enough to make a regular out of your customer. I'd rather go to Einstein Bagels for a plain taste and not burn a hole in my wallet. P.P.S. I made an account to make aware just how dissatisfied I was with my visit.

Yes. Four stars. Based on two visits spread over several years. The first time I was here the macaroons were gorgeous, tasty and just pretty. The second time, they had no macaroons. They did have a delicious turkey curry sandwich which was really well balanced. We also did have the bacon and cheese quiche which was really good.

Nuvrei has many flavors of croissant and canelé as well as other pastries. I tried the plain, matcha glaze, and sesame thyme. I liked the sesame thyme best, though none of the croissants blew me away. The croissants, which were $3 - $5 depending on flavor, were a bit pricey given that they were rather petite. I also had a bacon cheddar biscuit. The bacon was pleasantly chewy. My bf loved his lemon canelé.

The bakery is cute. The macaroons are so pretty to look at. Everything in this bakery is nice,. The only reason I gave them a 2 star is because I spent over 35$ for macaroons and they ended up tasting disgusting so I threw them all away. Now i don't know if I just got a bad batch or picked all the wrong flavors or what, but I was seriously disappointed in the macaroons. I heard good things about this place, it was nice and clean, the service was good, if only the macaroons tasted that good. I will give this place another shot... someday.

Macarons are downstairs and are 2.50 Each. There were only 5 flavors when I came so I decided to get 4 out of the 5 flavors (black licorice, no thanks) all were good but not 2.50 worth...

It's a super cute and tiny place - it has a modern, clean look. There are only about 6-7 places to sit inside. There isn't a menu so it's confusing as to what drinks they have. The people who work there could crack a smile and be a lot friendlier. There was no hi, thank you, or any acknowledgment of our presence. My husband said the guy acted as if he was doing us a favor. The cookies (chocolate chip and chewy walnut) were good. I got a pretzel sandwich with lox cream cheese. The pretzel was soft and yummy, the lox cream cheese was okay. My husband got a poppy seed scone and coffee, which he said was okay. Overall, the place was nice, but the attitude of the people working there, was not. A smile and a hello go a long way. Geez!

One of the best bakeries in the Pacific Northwest. Get a box of assorted pastries! Very pricey. Service is mediocre.

This place is a modern, clean, and hip! I love the atmosphere here and the employees are very friendly. We got the chocolate, banana walnut croissant and mango canele. We also got a rose croissant complementary of the owner which is very nice of them. The Mango canele tasted okay to us. We didn't really taste the mango flavor or liked the texture. I never had canele before so I can't compare it to something else. The croissants on the other hand were divine. My boyfriend could not stop raving about the chocolate, banana walnut croissant. If you have a sweet tooth, this one is for you. The rose croissant was lightly sweet, flaky and soft. I recommend both of them.

I used to have a 5 star front page rating for this place, and I never do bad reviews but I hate the direction they are going. They did a remodel a few months back (that looks great) but they also changed their offerings. There is no longer a menu it is simply: "what you see in the display is what's available" - trendy not very nice barista. This place used to have easily what I would consider the best bagel/sandwich in town. Now you are lucky if they have one you might like In the display...if not? Tough luck. Classic case of "if it ain't broke don't fix it" they had a great thing going and had to ruin it. I went from going here almost every weekend to wondering if I will ever return.

I am in love with nuveri. Their food was awesome and the Mac bar downstairs is wonderful. The best deal is the pick 3 macaroons for $9. He rose and the violet are by far my favorites. I can't wait till their new location in Big Pink opens up!

The dedication to quality here is absolutely incredible! Everything you put in your mouth--from a cookie, to drip coffee, to a sandwich--is going to taste absolutely perfect! Nuvrei has officially ruined me for any other baked goods. Amazing food, friendly staff, and incredible quality. Go here any chance you get.

If poor customer service doesn't bother you, then it's worth going to try their amazing food. If their employees were better they would definitely get a 5 star from me.

How does that old phrase go? "A bulldog can whip a skunk, but sometimes it's not worth it." Nah, that's not it. "A balanced diet is a cookie in each hand." Nope, that's not it either. "An apple a day keeps the doctor away, but an onion a day keeps everyone away" Getting closer. "You get what you pay for." Yes, that's the one! I say this because Nuvrei is not a bargain by any means, but the result is nothing short of awesome. I woke up in my Portland hotel room and was craving a bagel. Not a bagel from the complimentary breakfast at the hotel, but rather a bagel that oozed local flavor and that would break the norm. Gimme lox, gimme cream cheese, gimme onions, hell, gimme the works! A quick Yelp search yielded several bagel joints all within striking distance but none seemed to carry a very high reputation. I kept digging and Nuvrei popped up with a 4.5 star rating and some stellar reviews - done! When we reached Nuvrei we encountered a small line, which moved quickly and it seemed everyone was here for the bagels. I jumped all over the salmon on an everything bagel with cucumber, dill, butter lettuce and red onion and prayed that the $9.00 price point would deliver a bagel of epic flavor proportions. I'm happy to say, yes, yes it did! The bagel was soft yet crunchy, the ingredients were fresh and it didn't spill all over the place - well constructed and perfectly balanced. Truly delicious and further confirming that you do indeed get what you pay for!

This might be the most minimalist bagel shop ever, but the menu here is very "Einsteiny". You're walking into Nuvrei, congratulations you actually found the place. So far you're ahead of the game. Now what to eat?... It is a bagel shop, but there's no menu hanging anywhere and the only thing that lets you know they serve bagels, beside your handy yelp app, is the fact that there's delicious circular doughy treats being prepared in the corner of the restaurant. When you get up to the counter you finally see the menu and realize they do offer a decent variety of bagels; plain, garlic, sea salt, and the classic everything flavor. They also plenty of tasty breakfast sandwich combinations and of course the original bagel & cream cheese option. I opted for the salted (called Fleur de Sel on the menu) bagel sandwich with avocado and turkey. This was not only incredibly tasty, but super fresh and piled high with veggies, plus the bagel was super soft and pretty melted in my mouth. I also loved the fact the bagels were not absurdly oversized, instead they were about the same circumference of an english muffin and just a tad thicker. They also soared no expense on the turkey, no generic stuff, instead the deli meat was solid chunks of actual carved turkey breast. Gobble Gobble! Along with my straight from heaven bagel I also purchased a Canelé. This was ce magnifique! This sweet pastry has a hard candy crunchy outside and a very soft and doughy inside. A great way to kick start my breakfast meal. I walked into Nuvrei, not feeling it and walked out pleasantly surprised. One small suggestion would be more seating, but that's my only real complaint about Nuvrei! Hooray!

This place and ken's artisan bakery - the only places to have a fabulous croissant in Portland. Service is usually friendly and not "fast" but also not unbearably slow. The decor is modern and cute with marble table tops and bright yellow chairs. The have fabulous french macarons also, particularly in their new bar/cafe downstairs which I've been meaning to check out. Highly recommend. I kinda feel like Nuvrei is almost too good to be true. Pinch me?

Been here a few times but I always forget to yelp about them. It's only when something bad that happens that makes you remember to write about them. Last time we came here I waited and wait for our order to be finished. I noticed the people that ordered after me had already gotten their food. So I decided to go ask about my order, turns out that someone threw my ticket out and they never started on it. They tried to compensate by giving me a gift card for one free sandwich the next time I am in. I haven't been back since and I think I lost the card. I am still giving them 4 stars but their baked goods really are great even if I had to wait so long, especially their cookies.

This is one of my favorite places to have lunch in Portland. It's also one of my favorite places to take my friends for a snack. My favorite lunch item is the "Avocado Turkey." It's a bagel sandwich with tomato, red onion, butter lettuce, and cream cheese. (I get mine with no cream cheese) It's $8.25. They also sell delicious things like croissants ($2.50), Chocolate croissants ($3.25), double chocolate chip brownies ($3.00), and macarons ($2.50/each). I've had each of these items at one point or another and they are all yummy. Nuvrei also sells coffee, tea and hot chocolate so you can always accompany your meal with something nice to drink. (Coffee $2.50-$3.00; Latte $4.25- $4.75; Hot Chocolate $2.50- $5.25; Tea $2.50) Don't forget to check out their fresh macaroons. You can buy one for $2.50, 6 for $18.00 or 12 for $34. Some of the ones I've had are double chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, green tea, and caramel sea salt. They were all great but the double chocolate was my favorite by far.

[Cafe Chic] I stumbled upon this chic little bakery/coffee shop one morning after an alcohol-fueled evening. They had a wonderful selection of pastries which included macaroons (Get the Earl grey ones). Everything in the case looked amazing and tasted even better! Their latte quality was excellent and expertly crafted with designs in the foam. Fresh beans make all the difference! Service was as good as the food. Worth the trip if you need a coffe or some morning pick-me-ups. It's a little small so seating can be limited.

I was pretty disappointed with their macarons. I expected it to have the perfect shell with consistent filling but the filling was too runny for some reason. I got the rose, violet, and salted caramel and they all kind of tasted the same. Not worth my money...

  • R G.

Good pastries- tried 3: lemon poppy scone, berry scone, and raspberry danish. All fresh and tasty. Berry scone could've been bit sweeter. Subtracted 1 star bc the macarons were out.

Visited Nuvrei again on a recent trip to Portland. Since my first review, Nuvrei has expanded into an upstairs cafe space which has up the ante. What I seemed to gather from my visit is that the product selection has increased with the additional square footage. There is a coffee bar and they now offer sandwiches. The prices have also risen quite a bit that Nuvrei is now on the high end of French bakeries in Portland. I stopped by to try out one of their bagel sandwiches. If you are unfamiliar with the order process, grab one of the menus on the counter. First pick the type of sandwich you want. Then choose the bagel variety and lastly the topping of cream cheese you would like. Ordered an smoked salmon bagel sandwich on an asiago bagel with honey cream cheese ($8.50). Yes, it is a bit pricey compared to getting a breakfast sando at Brunch Box. The quality of the ingredients justifies this though. The bagel is very much artisan made rather than a run of the mill bagel chain bagel. Smoked salmon was predictably good, but the honey cream cheese is what makes this sandwich wow inducing. I did also grab a sesame thyme croissant ($3.75) for my trip back to Seattle. After popping it in the toaster oven the following morning, I found it to be as good as I hoped. It has got the right flaky texture that I look for in a croissant, but I really loved the distinct flavors that the sesame seeds and thyme offer. I haven't been to a Seattle French bakery that does a croissant like this. For that reason, I would recommend it. If you are looking for quality French baked goods and/or artisan bagel sandwiches, give Nuvrei a try.

Expensive, but you see/taste why when you're in here. The quality of ingredients is so superb, they wouldn't be making their money if they lowered their prices to "civilian level". The whole reason for this review was the ultra-friendly and personable service, and that damn Passionfruit lemonade. I mixed it with their mango iced tea. GET IN MY MOUTH RIGHT NOW, YOU COOL DELICIOUS SUMMER REFRESHMENT!

The best collection of croissants and macaroons in town. Their bagels and bagel sandwiches are consistently excellent. My favorite is smoked salmon on jalapeño bagel. You can't go wrong with that. Go checkout their macaroon bar downstairs to see all the different colors on display. And they taste delicious as well. For fresh plain and chocolate croissant also go downstairs. Nothing beats a fresh, warm croissant for breakfast. It's a small place and weekend mornings are busy, but it's totally worth the wait.

We tried breakfast at Nuvrei and really enjoyed it! I had the pretzel with wild salmon (delicious) with the mango black tea. I also had the chocolate banana walnut croissant to go...it was amazing! This was a cute shop but we weren't aware the macaron bar was downstairs and totally missed them! Will try next time for sure...

The croissant selection is pretty good and the croissants themselves were nice and flaky..the way they should be. They had a great bagel sandwich selections and bagels looked great! I would go back for a quick coffee, breakfast and lunch. They also have macaroons downstairs which I didn't get to try.

Omg! One of the best French bakeries that I've been to in the U.S.! We happened to run into this bakery and boy were we surprised! The pistachio and almond croissants were outstanding! We almost had a foodgasm from these!

The croissants, a cornerstone and metric of all bakeries, are wonderful. The dough is so barely sweet as to take off any sour edge. The last time I visited I bought a cherry torte that left me wanting another. Macarons could be better. The meringue has decent body but could be loftier. The filling is too intense, overwhelming the meringue. The raspberry that I had was simply jam. The salted caramel felt and tasted like candy, likely because it was. As long as the quality remains I'll patronize Nuvrei. It's good eats. Just get there early.

Macarons and Croissants heaven! Sunday afternoons should always be spent at Nuvrei! Always!! Cute charming place, good coffee + amazing pastries. Where else would you go to?? I've been here about half a dozen times since I love this spot and most friends love it as well. Last visit though wasn't too happy since they were out of macarons. Worried not, I had their amazing almond croissants instead. People watching in Pearl district with a perfect cup of cappucino + super flaky pastries? It's a must do in my books. I really love their croque madame and tasty macarons too. Especially the earl grey flavor. So tasty. You can easily spend your whole entire afternoon in this pretty spot without noticing the time. I totally can as long as my cup is full and my croissants are getting refilled :)

  • Paula B.

As an annual visitor to the Pearl District, we always look forward to the croissants and bagels at Nuvrei. When I stopped by yesterday to get my almond croissant, I almost did not recognize where it was because there were no tables lining the sidewalk. I was told that after they remodeled, they could not put them outside. They also removed all the funky yellow chairs and tables from inside and now there is only a small counter area for seating. It looks so sterile! No bagels for hubby either. I read in another review all you get is what u see. The best part of Portland in summer is having your eats outside and watching the world go by. Have to find another spot. The Commissary on 19th and Lovejoy bakes their own pastry, scones, muffins, cookies, and has several tables outside. There's always Lovejoy Bakers. Nuvrei, you sure disappointed!

This was finally a place that made me remember why I love Portland so much. The croissants and coffee are perfection. If I'm in this part of town, I will only come here for coffee from now on. I don't care how many other cafés I pass en route. Service was great. Seating was limited, but people were nice enough to leave when they were finished.

hmm...wasn't a fan of this place. I ordered a caramel latte with soy. Bf had a mocha. Daughter visited the macaron area downstairs. I also ordered a double chocolate cookie. The cookie was OK. Nothing that I can't make myself. My daughter liked the macarons she had- coconut, white chocolate, and rose flavors- but she said it wasn't any different from others she's had. My bf hated his mocha-said there was no taste. My caramel latte was OK. But the service was good.

  • Roberto G.

I've been wanting to come here for sometime now but finally I did today. I got their special mocha (not sure what's the name) but it was great, perfect blend of the bitterness of the cocoa and coffee. I also got their biscuits with bacon baked in it, and more bacon and egg (serving is kind small) but flavor was a mouthful. I was sad that they didn't have the colorful French macaroons but that might be served on a specific time. Overall great ambiance and friendly servers and location is great :)

I LOVE this place. The atmosphere. The quality of service. The food. I have yet to try any of their pastries as I can't seem to get past their sandwiches. Their BLT and avocado turkey bagel sandwiches are incredible. For breakfast, definitely get the Bacon Croissant. It's seriously SO yummy. Can't wait to come back and try their macarons.

Firstly- bad coffee, secondly- these guys are rude and they don't give a **** about customers and their satisfaction. Especially in Portland, there are too many places for good coffee with nice service to waste any time at this place. Bad coffee, too expensive, and crappy service. No reason to ever come back.

I've been wanting to come here for a long time... It's cool and raining here in Portland and I thought a coffee and sandwich (late lunch) would be a good idea. It was a GREAT idea!! The coffee was perfect! And the sandwich was even better! Fresh and full of flavor. Aside from the fact that it's rather expensive, I will however, return!

Dudes, these are the best macarons I've EVER had. E.V.E.R. Ever! Spot on chewy texture, a gorgeous rainbow of colors, and strong flavors. That's gotta be my favorite part about these macarons--the flavor. I'll mention the rose flavored specifically. I think it's hard to balance a floral flavor. Too light and you can barely taste it, too strong and you feel like you're eating perfume. But these folks gave my inner Goldilocks a skip in her step. Also tried espresso, coconut, pistachio, and salted caramel. Each one was just right! Service gets a lower rating because the guy upstairs was not forthcoming with information. The guy downstairs wasn't much better at first, but then he warmed up to us and loaded us down with super useful Portland tips. He ended up being great! My tips for you if you've never been to this location: upstairs is drinks and pastries but downstairs is where the treasure is. Macarons haven. Not much seating here so don't plan to stay for a casual long afternoon. Edit: I just ate some macaroons somewhere else. Meh. Just confirms my original assessment--Nuvrei is tops.

We came to visit Portland recently and my son brought us here. At first I just ordered a latte. It was good - nothing really special. As I sipped it, I kept eying the pastry case. Eventually, curiosity got the better of me and I went to get a closer look. I saw something with my name on it - a jalapeno cheddar pretzel bagel. Yum! I was really good. Next time we return to Portland, I hope to have time to try a sandwich. They looked great!

This place is fire. Soo good. When b and I came here, we got a bacon cheddar biscuit, a chocolate almond croissant, jalapeño cheddar blt bagel, croque Madame, two fresh baked croissants, passionfruit lemonade and seven different French macaroons (black walnut, raspberry, passion fruit, pistachio, earl grey, violet, and hazelnut). Everything was super tasty. Bagel was soft on the inside but crisp on the out. It complemented the blt portion so well and that jalapeño gave the entire sandwich a nice little spice up. The croque Madame wasn't the best I'd ever had but it was nice and hot when it came out with a nice addition of buttery goodness to the sandwich. It came with some chips. Id say while I did enjoy it, I think I like the croque Madame from elephants better. The passion fruit lemonade was very enjoyable. It was carbonated and that took the cake. It reminded me of a flavored San pellegrino beverage. All croissants were so flaky and buttery. I literally die. Can't even say anymore bc it's not even necessary. Macaroons might just be the best I've ever had. Each flavor was so distinct you knew exactly what you were biting into. I don't think I could pick a favorite flavor and while the pistachio wasn't bad, it just wasn't my preferably flavor. None the less, so good. Be aware, they are a bit spendy. Ill let to know how the cheddar biscuit is. It's the only thing I have left to eat.

One more shot... ooohhh they have flavored canneles. I love canneles. This one is bright orange and is Peach & Cardamom. That sounds great. Here's my $3 gimme gimme gimme. Huh. This is a good cannele. Right texture outside and inside. If I close my eyes there is no taste of peach. There is no taste of cardamom. I can get this same dessert at several other places for $2. How is it possible to supress cardamom? Why was I fooled again by the florescent backdrop of these goodies?

I had the best croissant of my life at Nuvrei. Their matcha croissant is amazing -- lightly glazed on top, moist, light, and buttery inside.. Ugh. I also tried their pistachio rose croissant which was heavier. Still good, but not as amazing as the matcha croissant. It is a must try. They also have mini caneles in a bag. If that doesn't warrant a visit, I don't know what does.

This review is overdue so here we go. On our way to Lan su Chinese garden we want to have a good coffee first, so we decided to walk around the neighbor until we find something attract our attention/curiosity, sometimes it's worth to take a chance and that how my family often have the most memorable story of our life. I make this simple: Do you want a great coffee? Then this is the place They have the real coffee machine here, the real apparatus My husband still dream of his cuppoccino, a month later I asked him what was his favorite coffee stop during our 2 weeks vacation (that little coffee shop in Portland) Now not to insult here: if you're just the Sturbucks type coffee drinkers, then this place is probably not going to stand out for you, this is more like an European style, not about size its about how the coffee is made and it's done well. The room itself is very small, and yes hardly have a place to seat, a few chairs looking over the street. I loved it The pastries looks amazing but I can't speak out for all, (we had the pastry with marionberries on top and that was amazing. I thought the stuff was amazing too but it could be different depending on what time you visit, we were the only customers at the time so maybe that why we had no issues. Price? I thought the price is very reasonably cheap the the quality but again, we all have some short of expectations. I will be visiting again next time in Portland I do recommend this place if you like a good cup of European like coffee and pastries.

I never went here before the remodel so I can't compare, but I love this place. It's excellent pastries, not too sweet and they really know their craft. My favorite is the canele. They don't have any menu for drinks, but they can make anything unless you're looking for a drink made with speciality syrup. It's fine, order an ice latte and grab a pastry.

Breakfast sandwiches are ballin. Perfectly runny yolk on the fried egg. Delicious scones and croissants. Just a great and wonderful surprise that we stumbled across when looking for a breakfast place downtown. My company is moving offices to a location that might be one block from this place and I can't tell you how excited/terrified (for my wallet) it makes me.

Still loving Nuvrei but I feel completely annoyed that they've taken down the prices so you can't see what stuff costs until you are at the register and by then there's a gazillion people behind you and you don't feel like you have time to think about what you want to order. The sandwiches are good, though I wish the bread had a bit more flavor (salt?) and texture. The pastry and coffee is delicious and any who can walk past this bakery, smell the fragrance of baking bread and butter-filled pastry, and not run up the stairs is probably a zombie.

You know a place is GOOD when: (1) There's a line out the door and you don't care how long you are waiting in line (2) You're enamored by the scent of food wafting your nostrils (3) Once you've braved the line, you have multiple **foodgasms** from devouring your delightful treats ..... and Nuvrei exemplifies all three! Nuvrei has been on my bookmarks forever and I don't know why it took me so long to visit this lovely place! I came to Nuvrei with fellow Yelper, Joe M. to grab a brekkie (breakfast) sammie and a couple of their delicious treats. You won't leave disappointed! [devour] *ALMOND CROISSANT ($3.25 each, **4 STARS**) - Croissants are my guilty pleasure carbohydrate. It's even better when they are "almond" flavored! What I love about Nuvrei's version is that it's texture is different, but in a good way. Kinda hard to explain. OMG, You've got to eat it to experience the texture that I'm talking about! Be cautious with the pastry as the powdered sugar can spill! For some people, it might be too sweet, but for sugar-fiends like myself, it hits the spot (over and over again with each bite!) ( yelp.com/biz_photos/nuvr… ) *SMOKED CHEDDAR & WILD SALMON PRETZEL ($4.75, **5 STARS**) - This brekkie sammie was very divine! I didn't think a pretzel would be considered as a sammie. The pretzel is sliced in half and serves as the buns of the sammie. It's slightly toasted, so your cheddar and wild salmon is also warmed up (just a tad). The flavors were amazing and blended harmoniously. I shamelessly devoured it within minutes (and wished I had more)! =X ( yelp.com/biz_photos/nuvr… ) Note = I heard their other BAGEL SAMMIES were also great. It's definitely hard to choose what to order when you see all samples of the sammies on their display case ($5.50 - $7.75). If you don't want a sammie, the bagels can be sold solo ($1.75 - $2 depending on the flavor; $1 for their homemade shmear). *FRENCH MACARONS ($2 each, **4 STARS**) - although pricey, they are made quite well and probably one of the best macs I've had in PDX. They have many flavors, but thus far I've only tried their FRUIT DE LA PASSION (vanilla passion fruit custard) and it was confectionary kindness to my taste buds! Note = Other flavors available: Framboise, Mure, Citron, Rose, Rhum Raisin, Pistachio, Noisette, Caramel au Buerre Sale, Espresso, Chocolat Noir, Chocolat Au Lait, and Chocolat Mi-Sucre. [drank] *PASSION FRUIT LEMONADE ($2.50, **3.5 STARS**) - obviously I love passion fruit flavored things! The drink was light and refreshing! Made fresh daily, it's worth trying. It comes iced, but careful with the cup as the cap doesn't hold well. So you might have some spillage on your hand. So be cautious of that manufacturer defect. FYI = -Limited seating inside and outside -Expect a line, but it moves quickly -Parking on the street (metered) -Breakfast is served ALL DAY -They also serve lunch (10 AM - Close; hot/cold sammies, pizzas and salads) -Eye candy employees (*wink wink*) -"OOOOH" and "AHHHH" over their lovely display case of baked goodies while you stand in line and watch employees slave over your order -Coffee, teas, and hot chocolate also available ($2.25 - $4.50) -Goodies available: scones, muffins, cookies, croissants, and danishes -Want the French Macs in a box? 7 count ($15) 14 count ($30) - they're really nice boxes too! I wish this place was closer to me. I would love to have breakfast here everyday! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for pastries & sammies! Yelp 2013 100+ Reviews Challenge (going for 200!) - Review #125

Proximity to perfection is a disfigured notion lacking correlation; the closer an advance to the ideal is fabricated the farther away lies the flawless. Coffee is an art featuring the cornerstones of human distaste: sourness and bitterness. However these flavors exhibit a transformation when united with the coveted fifth taste: Umami. Umami is the monk who lives in the limitless peaks of the Himalayas. His perch upon a cliff suspended above a glacier is only navigable by a winding, difficult path known by the name of mastery. A misstep on this path plunges one into the formidable icy depths known as the Starbucks Frappiciuno. As the flow of the roasted bliss enters one mouth, one could not imagine being farther away from the glacial horrors. Sip by sip the caffeinated Nuvrei explorer has finally glimpsed at the monastery doors.

Nuvrei finally! I have been wanting to try this place for months, & finally got around to it today. I ordered a coffee and a chocolate brioche, pretty delicious!! Highly recommend heading downstairs for some macaroons (cash only, and worth every penny).

I want to like this place more then I actually like it. They never make the breakfast sandwiches the way I like it and if I ask for the bacon extra crispy I get it still mooing and limp inside my sandwich. So they don't LISTEN to their customers. Also this has happened like 10 times so it not just a one time fluke. Like I said I want to like them and keep trying to give them another chance but they keep failing .... Yet I am here again trying to let them get it right for once. Lol

Are you kidding me? This place has the best croissants I have ever eaten. And I'm a croissant snob. Awesome coffee and the bagels look great (though I did not try them). I'm knocking a star because they did not ask if I wanted my croissant heated though.

BEST MACAROONS EVER!! I am madly in love with all of the macaroons. The moment you take a bite, a bold pop of flavor explodes in your mouth & you are in macaroon heaven!! P.S. Jessica is awesome!!

Bagel croque garson! What a great way to indulge for brunch! Great place, European atmosphere and good cappuccino!

Delicious bagel sandwiches. I had the salmon and chive cream cheese- yum! The bagel was nowhere near a traditional bagel, but was tasty nonetheless. The cafe is rather on the small side with only two actual tables, and the rest a series of stools against the wall. The music was loud and distracting, so as far as ambiance goes its a big minus. The pastries were buttery and tasty and I enjoyed my smallish cappuccino, which was ridiculously priced. When did the going rate for espresso and milk get jacked up to over $4.00... I wouldn't go there if you're in the midst of attempting to write the great American novel, but for a delicious pastry, a cup of coffee and a chance to do some gazing out the window- its terrific.

J' adore Nuvrei!!! Stopped in for breakfast and was instantly transported to Paris!!! Such a charming little place with some tables & a counter inside and a few tables outside as well. The pastries were as lovely to look at as they were to eat, works of art really. The owner was previously at Payard and you can tell he really knows what he is doing. I had an almond croissant because of the rave reviews and it was pure perfection!!! crispy and flakey on the outside and creamy and sweet on the inside, the apple tart was just beautiful, why didnt I get a picture of it.. darn. Also had some great cappuccino. And of course I had to get some macarons I chose the passion fruit they were yummy too!

Absolutely fantastic; one of the best bagels I've ever eaten, doughy and delicious onion bagel with chive cream cheese.

Wow Portland, is there anything you cannot do? From macarons to bagels to cookies. You've mastered it all here! I've tried both their turkey bagel and smoked salmon bagel and they were delicious. Crisp vegetables, moist turkey in between a cheese crusted bagel and toasted to perfection. The macarons were light and packed with flavor. It was a great way to wash down the bagel with some sweets.

Be prepared for a line. Enjoy your time in line by watching the staff create yummy things from fresh quality ingredients. Take a gander at the pastry case but beware, you may want to take one of everything home with you. Appreciate the friendly helpful attentive staff. Sink your teeth into something super tasty. Prices are average to high. Options are plentiful. I especially enjoyed the Bacon Cheese Biscuit, filled with large pieces of freshly cooked bacon, and the Lemon Scone, that was perfectly lemony and just sweet enough.

Fantastic lemon poppyseed scone. I'd say a 8/10 on the scone scale. My husband got a chocolate croissant and it was soooo light and flaky. Felt like something you'd get at a real French bakery. I was very impressed. Also, they serve Heart coffee, which I am newly a fan of because it's wonderful!

The fruit croissant (plum) was the most exquisite pastry I have had in awhile. The croissant seems to be filled with a delicate almond cake, with layers of sliced plums. The caramelized crust is scrumptious when dipped in an Americano! The upstairs area with bar seating at the window provides perfect people watching, and the modern coffee shop ambience is warm with soul music.

It's what's for lunch! And breakfast, so I've heard. We were headed down to the PIB in the Park Blocks and figured we had better have something substantial in our stomachs prior to beerfesting. I had scoped out Nuvrei because it was super close, and I've heard yummy things. It's a busy place, even on a weekend at 1:30, so expect a bit of a wait. First off, the ordering process is stupid inefficient. Have they learned nothing from the Subway model? If the line is along the front counter, take the orders down the line so that you can get orders out at a faster rate. They even have menus placed at the end of the counter, so the idea is almost there. But I digress. After the cluster of a wait we were rewarded with some pretty good things. If you're not getting coffee, get the passion fruit lemonade. It is a tropical vacation in your mouth. I opted for the smoked salmon sandwich (w/ crisp cucumber, arugula, cream cheese, boiled egg) on what I'm pretty sure was some of the best bread ever. My husband's prosciutto w/ egg sammie was served piping hot and on what I'm sure was also the best bread ever. Also, I had a passion fruit macaron and I hate to say it but I wasn't blown away. It was good, but I'll opt for a different pastry next time. Let's distill the experience: 5 star food, definitely less than 5 stars for the way in which they got that food to my belly.

Best croissants in town hands down. However you may need to reinterpret your expectations of what a croissant is. At present Nuvrei is serving a winter fruit croissant that is a yummy melange of shredded apple, nuts, spices, almond paste, sliced apple and somewhere in there some croissant dough -- it sounds crazy but it works. The more straight up chocolate and almond croissants work very well too. We've also tried the bagel sandwiches, a nice light bagel and carefully constructed toppings -- can recommend the veggie sandwich very highly Coffee is also excellent, a well put together latte is always on offer. On the downside the store is tiny with very little seating and when there's a queue waiting for service you are likely to get jostled. Also the bussing arrangement could be improved -- here in Portland we like to bus our own cups but Nuvrei has nowhere for you to put them! Anyway highly recommended, we always stop by when we get a chance

This is one of my favorite places, the bagels are simply amazing like a cross between a bagel and a soft pretzel with all the best qualities of each. I love their bagel sandwiches (get it toasted) and they will even run their cookies through and warm them up for you if you ask... the chocolate chips get all warm and gooey! I love them so much we ordered a bunch of bagels to have the day of my wedding.

They nailed it on every aspect at this place. So happy after both of my meals there. Turkey avocado and the Blt is perfect to share for 2, and have a taste of both. Foxfire tea, with honey and brown sugar to compliment a good lunch and a little macaroon to sweeten the tooth right before leaving. They have done a fantastic job and I will be bringing back many guests. Thanks!

I'm not a big fan of places with high reviews and then fall complacent and fail to meet expectations. We initially came here for the macarons because they were the rated top ten in Portland. Unfortunately, when we got there, we found out that they stopped making them because they were working on establishing a macaron shop. Since this place is also a well rated cafe, we opted to try some hot bagel sandwiches. We were told that we could not order any because the kitchen closed at 4. However, when we checked the time, it was still a couple of minutes before. We then asked about the premade sandwiches, in which we received the same unapologetic response. Not wanting to be an inconvenience, we settled on taking some chocolate croissants and an everything bagel to go. My first gripe with them was that they didn't even bother to ask us if we wanted our pastries retoasted. The chocolate croissants were nothing special at all; in fact, they were burnt. Looking in the bag, I realized they didn't not even had any cream cheese for the bagel, which to add, was extremely small (maybe it would have been better as a sandwich, or maybe better toasted, or yet, better when coated in cream cheese!). I mean, even if a place charged for cream cheese, they should at least ask if you were interested in purchasing it. Nurveri is definitely not going to be on my list of places to return to when I come back to Portland.

Impeccable storefront and delicious pastries. Most importantly, probably the best espresso in Portland. The staff, selection and quality were 5 stars all three times I visited this past week. Highly recommended.

Best veggie bagel sandwich I've had! The jalapeño cheddar bagel is definitely worth getting here, everything seemed very fresh and meticulously prepared. I tried the chai tea, and it was a bit watery for my taste, but the bagel sandwiches and cookies are all really yummy and perfect for on-the-go breakfast!

Used to get variety of sandwiches and salads there for lunch. All tastes wonderful. The service is extremely slow, so I called in beforehand with my order and picked it up 30 min later (during lunch rush hours).

On my recent visit to Portland, the friend I was staying with said he just happened to have the best bagel he ever had from Nuvrei. Naturally we had to check them out. Their shop downtown is small, but I loved the design! It's very modern, with clean lines and polished wood exteriors galore. After much deliberating between sweets, treats, and meats (ok not meats), I ordered a smoked salmon, cream cheese, and arugula sandwich on an asiago bagel. I also ordered a macaroon to munch on. My friends ordered a couple bagels for themselves as well. We took our food to the nearby Tanner Springs Park and ate in the sun. My sandwich was fantastic. The bagel was perfectly toasted and tasty, and the salmon, cream cheese, and arugula were a perfect contrast to the tartness of the asiago bagel. I'll definitely visit Nuvrei next time I'm back in Portland. What a great spot!

The jasmine macarons was a unique flavor but unanimously our party LOVED the passionfruit! Also had the lox with chive cream cheese, butter lettuce, red onions and cucumber on a toasted plain bagel. Four thumbs up! I'll crave that bagel all the way from LA.

I had been hearing about the bagels from Nuvrei for a couple of years. I finally made it! It was worth every bit of effort. I had an Everything Bagel with cream cheese and a cup of coffee. That was the best bagel I have ever had!! Perfectly dense, full of flavor and not to big. Highly recommended!!! A review below said a downside is "limited seating and limited street parking." I was actually impressed with what they have done with the space that they have & there are also two outside tables to enjoy. As for the parking, what place has parking? It's Portland. That's why walking is beneficial. You do not have to find a parking space and you work off your decadent treat. Thank you Nuvrei!!!

I'm serious when I say this is a world class establishment. If you visit here from overseas and could only visit two spots in Portland, there's no doubt Nuvrei would have to be one of them. There's a level of quality to all their stuff that I can't help but take notice of each time I stop by and I really can't say enough good things about them. I've been coming here for years and the quality has never wavered. You can't let the high prices dissuade you. You aren't walking into just another bakery to order just another pastry.. you're getting something insane, made with passion and precision. My only negative comment is they've set the bar so high that most other croissants and cookies are underwhelming now.

What can I say, I am already in love with Nuvrei @ first dine. We were roaming about in the Pearl district and noticed this small modern looking cafe and we went in. I saw Connele on display and I had to have it. Its not easy to find french bakeries that actually have this amazing pastry. It was perfect, bittersweet crust and soft interior. We also tried the cheddar and bacon biscuit and it was light, flaky and very tasty as well. Can't wait to be back to try - sesame croissant and the macaroon.

i am a macaron snob....therefore i am extremely picky about it, and as you should. Had the best while in France and in New York. Nuveri's macarons passed the tasting test. Texture is exactly what macarons ought to have. No stupid air bubbles on the shell. Nothing too chewy.. Filling is portion just right(yes, there can be a thing such as too much or too little). Flavour wise they have the staples such as chocolate and vanilla. Too boring for me so i always opted for exotic flavours. Maybe they do rotate flavours but I got Passionfruit, Chamomile Honey, and Earl Grey. Their macarons is better than the ones offered from Ken's Artisan Bakery! Friendly staff ;)) Will be back for more and then try other fine offerings. Price: i don't remember. It was 3 macarons for nearly $10 which to me it's reasonable when they're yummy!

Good almond croissant but not the best I have ever had, I think Bakery Nouveau still holds that title. I had ordered an 8oz. hot chocolate as well, oh...it was super rich, a tad too much. After a sip, I was done with it. The service was slightly slow because only one person was making all the drinks ordered, there was a little bit of a wait. The bagels looked amazing, I might make a trip back to try one with this honey cream cheese that I keep reading about.

Went here for late lunch on Saturday while visiting Portland, and we were both BLOWN AWAY. On top of a few sweets including chocolate macaron and oats, rum and raisin, I had granola and my friend turkey croissant. We didn't have to wait long for our foods, and they were superb. Every ingredient in my granola including blueberries, was top notch, and it was easily the best granola I've ever had. For the turkey croissant, everything was in perfect balance, from shaved turkey to cranberry cheese to thyme croissant, and the flavour was out of this world. Can't wait to go back to try their Brie and turkey on bagel, although if I had the chance, I'd like to try every single thing on their menu. Staff were sufficiently quick and pleasant, and the place was bright and clean, with limited but cozy seating. Winner!

Was in town with a couple of girlfriends and friend recommended Nuvrei. Place is a little small but quaint and cute. Came here on a Sunday morning and waited for about twenty minutes... But it was well worth the wait! Got a sausage Sammie and it was DELICIOUS. The sausage was savory along with the pretzel bun. Decently priced and the employees were super friendly. Highly recommend this place!

Croissants are still incredibly flaky! Had the chocolate croissant. Thought I'd have a Parisian experience, but the firm chocolate inside hinted I was still in Portland. I expected the chocolate to be a little softer. It wasn't as firm as biting into a candy bar and it wasn't a gooey mess, but not the texture I expected. Good service!!

This is by far the best bakery in Portland. Everything I've had here is top notch amazing. Macarons are the best I've ever had. The brioche is the softest most perfect bread. All of the pastries and cookies that I've had from there have been heaven.

My wife says Nuvrei has the best chocolate almond croissants in Portland. I think they have the best bagels. I got both this morning. Their pretzel bagels are incredible. I just put some in the oven and made a mini bagel pizza and someone should start replicating pretzel crusts for pizzas... This place is definitely worth my 20 minute roundtrip drive on weekend mornings to pick up pastries for the family...

I live in Eugene and every time I get to Portland, I find a way to eat here. Seriously, these guys have the best food. Everything is so fresh! The bread....oh my! And, the cookies are wonderful! Every time I walk by this place I tell myself to stop in and try it. So I finally stopped in today for a quick snack and I am so glad I did. I had a delicious cinnamon danish (it's like combining the best part of a danish with a cinnamon roll). It was very, very good. I missed the orange glaze on the menu description and was surprised by it. Yum, yum. Since they seem to be known for their macaroons I made an impulse buy and tried the chocolate one. Very good. It was like a soft cakey cookie sandwich. The variety of flavors was almost too much to take in. I wish I could have tried one of each flavor. Maybe someday when I get the need for a macaroon gorge, it will be here.

Oh Ho! Secret bakery indeed! Unless you look carefully inside, you won't realize that it's a bakery! It's is not a big bakery but who cares? Its pastries are amazing! My friend and I got four different macarons and one dark chocolate walnut cookie. YUM... Heavens.. I don't usually eat macarons but when I do, I prefer ones from Nuvrei.. They are so great! Not too crunchy outside and plenty soft inside, Nuvrei's macarons will disappear quickly from your plates. We took our time to enjoy them so they lasted little more than few minutes but if I were to eat them by myself, oh yeah, they will be gone under 10 seconds. Cookie was delicious too - although I don't usually like dark chocolate - but would have been better if we didn't eat macarons before we ate the cookie.. If I lived somewhere near downtown Portland, I would come to Nuvrei reallllly often.. but I don't. When I'm nearby, I will make sure to visit though!

Best bakery in Portland... and beyond. Everything was absolutely amazing. We had a variety of breakfast sandwiches (bagels and croissants) and chocolate pastries.... We loved it so much we went back the next day for more. Cute little spot. Great for a quick breakfast!

  • Carrie S.

This place is like a little secret. I almost don't want anyone else to know they exist so I can just hog all the wheat free cookies to myself. They make gluten free cookies. However, the gentlemen behind the counter was clear to state that they are not a gluten free certified bakery, but they do make gluten free cookies (they had a brownie, and a chocolate cookie,,,,both were ridiculous). For me, I can indulge in these cookies. If you are very sensitive to cross contamination, this is not the place for you. I will totally be back. Prices are reasonable, service was super nice, and the stuff was so good. You should stay away from buying that crap in the Starbucks case and run over to eat some real rolls, croissants, and muffins.

As of this week Nuvrei changed their menu...now they are serving bagel sandwiches (where I can get almost anywhere), discontinuing their wonderful ready-made and baguette sandwiches that were divine and unique. The used to be 5star, now they are only average.

Have been in before for the quality pastries ... can not ever remember a place so painfully slow with so many people behind the counter working at a snails pace at doing nothing efficient or working to assist the long line. Had to walk out ...it was too much and there were others behind us. I recognize its not fast food but ... you get the point ~

We've been on the hunt for great macarons in Portland.. Found them!! We've been out trying French macarons all over Portland. When we walked into Nuvrei, we suspected we found something good. Crisp, light pastel colored shells, flavorful and fun fillings. Just the front display will get your mouth watering. We bought a box of 7 - Rose, Lavender, Orange, Salty-Caramel, Espresso, Citrus, and 1 I can't remember, went back to the car, and ate them all there. Fantastic!! We think Pix makes darn good macarons also, so for now, we are holding these two places as our favorites.

I've been eyeing this bakery online since it opened, but living in Chicago I had to be patient. On my next visit to Portland I made my sister take me here. I had the almond croissant and coffee for breakfast....both amazing. Best croissant I ever had. I also ordered macaroons for later and a chocolate croissant for later. Macaroons I ordered: espresso - amazing, salted caramel - heavenly, pistachio - mostly good, rose - not a fan but not bad. Next time I'd stick to just espresso and the salted caramel they were that good. I had the chocolate croissant the next morning and it was still fantastic. I think if I lived in Portland I'd be here all the time. Please on please join us in Chicago!

I love Nuvrei! I used to always stop by when they sold their pastries in a little shop in the basement of their building and was super happy when they opened their Cafe upstairs. Their Chocolate Almond Croissants are some of my favorite pastries on earth. This is a great place for coffee and pastries. Very recommended!

I guess this really should be two different reviews to be fair, one for the place and another for it's products. The coffee is simply outstanding, no two ways about it. Of the various pastries our group of four tried, the almond croissant was heavenly, the scone as dry as August in the desert, and one of the other items (I forget which) so filled with orange as to be nearly inedible. I realize that with alllllll those pastries there are bound to be other gems, and with the coffee being that good, it's worth a stop on every out of town trip that heads south or west from my house. Extra: There are only 2 tables, and a counter on the window to the street where 4 or 5 people can squeeze in. It's really a take out place. But ohhhhhh baby, the coffee is swell!

  • Jenny N.

Oh, Nuvrei....you seductive little minx! Just your name alone conjures up some saucy French lingerie boutique, and as much as I like the idea of pretty underthings, I probably would've walked right by you if you didn't assault me full on with the heavenly scent of your baked goods. It was enough to make me literally stop in my tracks and lure me down to your basement-level kitchen with intense curiousity. We were greeted warmly by one of the pastry chefs and tempted to try every.single.one of your scrumptious looking sweets! Alas, we were fairly stuffed from lunch, so we settled on the berry brioche upon recommendation from the chef. And wow....I was just blown away. It was still warm from the oven and oozing berry goodness. We ate every bite and then licked our fingers. YUM. On our second trip to Portland, I came in again and ordered the berry brioche. It was just that good. Nuvrei, you are a sweet mistress. I love you.

Eh. Went for a mid-afternoon snack and drink. They had very few options in the pastry case. It was basically empty. There was an all right almond croissant, although it was over baked. I might go back if I am in the area and have spare time, but I don't see what the fuss is about.

    (3)
  • Lissa W.

I didn't dream that the croissant could be improved upon, but Nuvrei's sesame pretzel croissants are maddeningly good: flaky and tasty, but with that extra little zip at the back of the palate that drives the next bite, and the next.... Having read through the reviews, I'm headed back for the bacon cheddar biscuit for sure!

I'm from Seattle and just walked into this place because it was close to my hotel. I now try to go every time we make a Portland trip. It has been consistently delicious and I always get great service. I always get the same thing-the bagel sandwich with smoked salmon, and a macaroon. This time they gave us a complimentary hot out da' oven croissant, which was also heavenly. Pretzel bagels are just genius. The other pastries also appear scrumptious. There is no comparable place here in Seattle, so I will long for this place until my next Portland trip!

    (5)
  • Danny D.

Dang. Great service, the nice woman behind the counter looks like this is her bakery. She's really kind and was sad when they were out of almond croissant so she offered me a chocolate almond. Twist my arm. And I had a sesame croissant at the same time. Yum. A few minutes later still hungry I started wandering around looking for something else and she offered to check downstairs... A few tense moments later, to my delight, she returned with a fresh almond croissant!! Heaven. (three croissant please don't tell...) it was fantastic. Crispy, light, and not too sweet! Damnnnnn. Shhhh this place is better than Pearl :). They heated my croissant too, and the Americano was quite good. This place I will crave... As a side note, Partick (the barista when I was there) is a serious student of artisan coffee. We spent a while talking about the craft and our favorite coffee luminaries in Portland and Seattle. Although I had a simple Americano I bet the lattes are mind bendingly good consisting his appreciation of proper pour and milk frothing.

Delightful. Everything here was quite lovely, and, more importantly, delicious. We had the chewy chocolate cookie (which was wonderful, and I believe Heidi Swanson also has a recipe for these online, which I'll be trying out soon), and chocolate bread pudding. The latter was quite unlike bread pudding, actually, and more like a really succulent cupcake. I liked it, although I can see how this would not be expected and therefore could be disappointing. All of the scones looked really tempting, although I thought the savory items did not look as intriguing (maybe they tasted great though, I don't know). My one complaint about this bakery is that the labels are actually not very descriptive. For example, the chocolate bread pudding had cherries in it, but this was only evident upon questioning (and not really even upon eating - they weren't tart and didn't add much). The cinnamon danish also had an orange glaze, which I was glad the cashier randomly mentioned, because the only thing that'll ruin a cinnamon dessert to me is having citrus on it. So, make sure to ask for the full ingredient list before you buy.

Almond. Croissant. It was worth the trip into town from Hillsboro just for that. The staff was very kind and they make good use out of such a small space. I will definitely be back to try their bagels and sandwiches.

We are back in Portland after being away for 10 years. We decided on living in the Pearl and are very happy that with that decision. Every morning we walk our dogs past Nuvrei at around 5:30am. We ALWAYS stop and hover over the grates in the sidewalk above Nuvrei because the smells rising from this wonderful little bakery are incredible! Most mornings we see one of the guys loading up the van to deliver these scrumptious pastries around Portland. One morning the van was not out front but one of the bakers ran out with a complimentary little taste treat. Today, we stopped in to get some double chocolate brownies with chocolate chips and walnuts for our friend's birthday party this evening. To our good fortune a new creation was just coming out of the oven. Jalapeno, cheddar pretzels. OMFG!!!!!!! Unbelievable! As Diana L. said in her review, Nuvrei truly is a hidden gem.

During my early morning bakery tour, I originally wanted to hit up a certain cupcakery, but it turns out that not everyone is a sugar-fiend like me at 9:15AM - so I had to kill some time before said cupcakery opened. Enter Nuvrei, with their pretty pink-and-white striped street sign, AKA international sign for delicious treats! I meandered downstairs into what felt like a secret liar and popped my head into the tiny little bakery. Nuvrei doesn't make a lot of things, but let that be a lesson to all bakeries: be a master of few rather than a mediocre jack-of-all-trades. I grabbed a blueberry scone here to munch on with my boyfriend and was pleasantly surprised to bite into a soft, buttery, decadent treat with NO hint of sickly-sweetness. In fact, you could actually taste the fresh berries, something I've learned never to *expect* from an American scone (I ate quite a few scones in London a couple of years ago, and trust me, I know the difference!). Nuvrei is definitely worth a visit if you want something luscious and satiating, but if you want sugar crystals and frosting, you might want to skip over onto Starbucks to get a frozen triangle of "bleh."

Bought a small box of macarons of assorted flavors and didn't really care for them. They are expensive and bland, if you want good macarons then you need to check out Papa Haydns. This place has a long ways to go

Whenever I have guests outside town, I bring them here to make sure they have a good impression of Portland! Waiting time and finding seats can be a bit frustrating but the food is five star always! I recommend this place to anyone.

The first time I came to Nuvrei, I was very excited. Neighborhood Notes had written them up as having one of the best chocolate chip cookies in town, and it was National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day. Unfortunately, no one told Nuvrei about the write up and they were completely sold out of the cookies, as were the other bakeries that were written up. So I went back the next day and tried their triple chocolate chip cookie. It was slightly crunchy on the outside, and chewy in the middle, which always makes for a fun cookie. The varieties of chocolate made the cookie continually interesting. I personally prefer a soft cookie, but this was definitely a treat. The next time I went back, I stopped in for a quick bite to take with me to work. I asked for a Ham & Cheese croissant. Unfortunately, it took about 15 minutes to get it, even with three people working. It was busy, but I was pressed for time. My experience with other bakeries in town is that it doesn't take nearly as long - usually less than 5. Overall, I'd say this place is pretty great. The food is top-notch, and I can't wait to try the macaroons - it's just not a place for a quick bite.

Best macarons in town! Too bad they aren't doing the buy 10 get 1 free promotion anymore. Bought a box of 14 macarons for $30 as a gift, comes in a beautiful long box. I like to stop in for individual ones when I walk around town, my favorites are the passionfruit and raspberry flavors.

Great selection of pastries and sandwiches. You can get a delicious, filling meal here for less than $10. The quality is obvious and the menu has enough variety to please every palate. I work nearby and have been in quite a few times for lunch and have never been disappointed in the food or the customer service.

Just three words: onion bagel BLT. Just get one. Do it. Had one last week - freaking delicious. Bagel is not fat, just perfect with a pretzel glaze. Nueske's bacon makes this extra special.

When Nuvrei was in the basement it was warm & quaint. And charming. You could walk in and ask what just came out of the ovens and get that in a bag to go. Wonderful! I am not a fan of the new cafe upstairs/street level. It's cold, uncomfortable, awkward, and, well... "pearly". What's pearly? It's nice for snobby. Add to that one very bad layout. It's just horrible! I agree w/ what another Yelper, Rose M, wrote (I have also spent time in France) "Macarons: I speak from experience on this. First, I have tasted all of their macaroons and they are lovely. I am also a highly experienced baker and Francophile so I know my Macarons. I am shocked at the price that Nuvrei is charging for their Macarons. They are $2 a piece!!! Not even in France where you can get a perfect Macaron, would you ever pay that much for a single one!" Right now they are charging $2 a piece but I saw on their menu that there's going to be a $3 macaron coming soon! OMG, really??!! LOL So 2 BIG BIG negatives and still I give them "Yay! I'm a fan"... here's why: their croissants are killer. KILLER!!! And their customer service is absolutely fan-frickin-tastic! I may change my review over time. The new cafe really does suck. I miss downstairs. If the owner, Marius, is smart, he will keep the downstairs open for business. Perhaps hang a sign that reads "DOWNSTAIRS: pastry to go only, no coffee, exact change appreciated".

Ok, there are so many good things on the menu but if you don't try 2 items then you haven't really been there... jk but seriously try the Salted Bagel w/ honey cream cheese and the Ham and Cheese Croissant. Seriously. If it is the only thing you do today, it's been a productive day.

I have been away for quite a while....back to Portland and just got to write this teview after read all these overated reviews. I tried the Almond Croissant and the flourless brownie. They are okay, but simply NOT the best! Sorry....my standard way higher for giving out 5 stars

Nuvrei = happiness. Their salted caramel macaroon makes the world a better place and their double chocolate cookie just might be the answer to world peace. The atmosphere is sweet, quaint, and inviting. And the barista THANKED ME for leaving a tip. I almost had to ask him to repeat himself. I'd go back every day if skinny jeans weren't in style.

I was very happy a new little cafe opened up near my office. They have good coffee and a nice selection of pastries, if you're not gluten intolerant, though they do have a flourless chocolate chunk cookie that's pretty good. The staff are very friendly and fast. However, it isn't a very well thought out layout. There are tables and bar stools in a very narrow space to the side of the order counter. No one can really enjoy their treats as they have to get up in order for anyone to get past them. There is no space to wait for your order, it's a constant shuffle to stay out of other people's way. I hope they get enough feedback to rethink the set-up. That alone, makes me not want to return. I'll only venture in when they're not busy.

I stopped in here for lunch and had an almond croissant and a cappuccino. The location makes the café special; it's right off the street but up a staircase allowing you to look out at the street. The prices weren't too bad considering the locale. The cappuccino wasn't the best...but the croissant more than made up for it. This café is definitely worth the price of the menu.

Nu vrei? Ba da, vreau!! :)) I was never a huge fan of macaroons until my best friend took me here about a ear ago for the first time. We love coming down to Portland from Seattle and having macaroons at NUVREI and this little girls weekend getaway was no exception! I'd like to start the review by sharing a little story from about 4 months ago when I drove down on a random Sunday by my self because my best friend was having a crappy week at work and since she absolutely loves these macaroons I wanted to surprise her... I was the one surprised once I got to NuVrei and found out that they were out of macaroons! Zack was working upstairs in the cafe and I asked him if there is ANY way I can get some since I drove down just for these and I really wanted to cheer her up. He made a call down to the bakery which is under the cafe and after talking to Jessica, the lady making them, he said she might be able to put some extras aside from a special order she was working on. I was given instructions to come back in 3 hours and I did so... once I came back to Nuvrei I found the large box of macaroons all ready to go! I paid the $36-ish that it cost, stuck another $20 in the tip jar for all his help and offered the promise that I'd write a great Yelp review about him/Nuvrei.... Guess what, I've been slacking in reviewing places on here but I had not forgotten his name and my promise and when I was down there this past weekend I was speaking to a man I hadn't seen there before and was telling him this little story and behind him was a woman making macaroons who happened to be Jessica! This said man we find out later on is the owner of NuVrei. He was kind and courteous and engaging ...and may I say quite handsome! Of course I'm a little biased because I am Romanian as well and proudly so. :) In conclusion, thank you Zack for all your help months ago and for going way above and accommodating me. Thank you Jessica for making yummy macaroons and for making me laugh with the fact that my story is now an "urban legend" around there... and of course thank you Marius for bringing such a great team together and for running a place that I'm proud to say I'd frequent if you were to open a Seattle location... hint hint ;) p.s. the chocolate croissants are delicious, I encourage you to try a warm one! p.p.s. chic decor, friendly service, and delicious food -- well deserved 5 stars.

Our youngest daughter took us to Nuvrei after brunch for desserts. Probably the best macaroons I had in my life and I have had an amazing macaroon in Paris from the bakery that invented them and this to me was better. The outer part was soft and the interior was silky smooth and delicious. Salted caramel flavor was amazing and the mocha flavored one was delicious too. As other reviewers have stated they do a great job with everything they have and the problem is not being able to have one of everything.

Great food. We had the Almond Croissant and Sausage Breakfast Bagel on the Everything Bagel. I though the croissant was AMAZING my wife exclaimed, "This is the best croissant I've ever had!" Only reason why it's not 5/5 is that the music was a little loud for the morning. Almost like a nightclub. Hmm. And mmmmmm!

I went to eat on a Saturday around 11am. I just beat a rush, which was nice. I was only there for about 30 minutes, so I don't know how crowded they are or how fast the turn around is for a table, but the seating is limited. There are 2 tables and a bar along the window. Anyway, enough about that. I had THE BEST BAGEL of my life at this place. It almost tasted like a soft pretzel, but in a good, bagel-y way. I got the everything bagel with regular cream cheese. The bagel itself was perfectly toasted. Crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside. The cream cheese was whipped and served on the side. I liked that. Sometimes bagel places put on too much, but most of the time they don't put enough on! Nuvrei gave you plenty. I also had a house coffee - good. And their "signature" passion fruit lemonade, which is made from a fruit puree and club soda! So it was fizzy and delicious and refreshing. The pastries looked TO DIE FOR. I wanted an almond croissant so bad. And the scones. Oh my god. Drool worthy. I wanted a light breakfast though, so I will get those next time. I also would love to try an actual bagel sandwich! They looked delicious too. Very nicely put together. With care. there definitely will be a next time.

So we got the seared salmon pretzel bagel and I thought it was an interesting taste but not the savory kick I was imagining and desiring. The thing I absolutely loved was the almond croissant because it was sooo flaky and buttery and just plain delicious. I am sure any croissant would be just as good but this one had some creamy almond paste that just made it over the top. Nom I want some now. I had this along with Blue Star donuts and I found myself eating the croissant more hehe

Yeah, there are a lot of good, local bakeries in PDX, but Nuvrei is hands down the BEST! The croissant sandwiches, bagel sandwiches, croissants, and bacon cheddar biscuits that I've tried have all been stellar; amazing; so delicious!!! They make the perfect light breakfast/brunch/lunch snack after you've finished a nice jog around the waterfront or a workout at the gym, or as a to-go meal you can eat at home. Still skeptical about the quality? Think I'm unfairly smitten with this patisserie? Check out the 5-star reviews from trusted Yelpers like Kristen M, Anna B, Joe M, Kris H, and Tamara C and then tell me I'm wrong. The only negative is that because of their popularity and small location, a moderate line during peak hours is not uncommon, and inside seating is fairly limited (~13 people, though another ~15 more at their outside tables if the weather is good). That being said, even during peak weekend brunch hours I've never had to wait more than 15 minutes in line to order, so it's really not that bad! Bonus points for even being open on Thanksgiving, too!!!

Chamomile Honey Macaron! Salted Caramel! Delicious and wonderfully chewy macarons. Among the very best we've tried. Fresh croissants out of the oven! Head downstairs for full selection of macarons.

Nuvrei was probably the highlight of my last weekend trip to PDX. It has a great location downtown close to many other shops and attractions. The main cafe is upstairs and the Mac Bar is downstairs where all the baking magic gets done. I really love the hours of operation as it allowed me to visit multiple times over one little weekend. Everything from beginning to end at Nuvrei is wonderful. If I ever get the privilege of owning a bakery, I would love it to be like Nuvrei. Their coffee is made using Heart coffee beans. I heart Heart so it's a no-brainer why their drinks are solid. The passionfruit lemonade should not be missed. It has the perfect ration of tang and sweet with a sparkling finish to make it continually interesting. I could not get over how delicious it was. We loved every single thing we tried. The sesame croissant was a revelation. The nuttiness and savoriness from just the right amount of salt made me have an "a-ha" moment. So simple, yet so delicious. Even the more decadent croissants such as the almond-croissant were not overly sweet and struck a fine balance. The cookies are amazing. The brownie walnut cookie had the crispy crust and just the right chew. The almond cookie had the right amount of salt to keep it interesting until the last bite. My favorite macaron flavor was the jasmine-green tea. The jasmine flavor was at the forefront and not lost like in so many other jasmine desserts. This macaron would be the perfect accompaniment to any cup of tea. I'm almost glad I don't live any closer as my wallet and waistline would take a serious hit. This would be a great place for an afternoon gouter or a full on meal as they have sandwiches they make with their bagels/pretzels/crosissants. I now have a favorite bakery in PDX!

I heard of a fun little caffe in the heart of down town that caught my eye. There are plenty, but this one is known for its croissants. The croissants are amazing. Like little buttery clouds of perfection. I highly recommend the turkey croissant. They do have an assortment of teas, coffee creations, and fresh juices to complement your lunch selection. Save room because there is a small cash only macron shop downstairs. Flavors include rose, pistachio, and almond. Close to Powels as well. Downside is limited seating and limited street parking. Note: the cafe does accept credit cards, but the macaroon bar is cash only.

Food is usually a second thought at many coffee places. Coffee is often mediocre at restaurant. Nuvrei, on the other hand, has the best of both worlds. When it comes to coffee, the latte here is on my list of top three with intense aroma. When it comes to breakfast food, the selection and quality impressed me. We ordered the sesame croissant and salmon bagel Salmon Bagel: For the bagel sandwich, you get to choose from eight different types of bagels. I think salmon should be paired with something simpler, so I went with the fleur de sel. It had a nice bagel shell with soft and chewy interior. Sesame Croissant: A good croissant is not easy to find. Fortunately, I was happy with the sesame croissant. It was exceptional. The crust was flaky and crisp, but not greasy. The inside was tender and moist.

Good but not great pastries and very pricey. All the macarons are $2.50 for a tiny (albeit perfect) portion. All croissants are over $4. I got the walnut croissant ($4.25) and it wasn't very big. So I expected it to be perfect for the price though I was already prepared to be let down because it was very very brown. Not golden brown, brown brown all the way through. Very little buttery flakey dough to be tasted since it was all crisped up. Plus is was very very sweet. They must have used as much nut paste as dough. I prefer more dough so I can actually taste the croissant and not just be eating the paste. I wasn't disappointed because it was okay-good, but I did feel a little ripped off.

I'm looking for best sweet place. Used to be the ACME donut shop on Powell but they decided to call it quit. Blue Star uses to be good (when there was just one store).. yet to try Pips. Anyhow, this place has amazing pretzel croissants!!!!!! It's amazing with decaf coffee. Mmmmmmmm.

Better than average offerings of popular items. But price points (and often lines) are one of the highest in town. $4.25 for a small latte...get real. And the place feels tense and uncalm.

I used to frequent this place on an almost weekly basis, but it's gotten really out of hand as of late. Simply put, they have a bit of a volume problem -- while the sandwiches and pastries are good, the cafe is simply ill-equipped to handle the amount of people and the crowds that come through. The lines are confusing to most, especially newcomers, and there's no proper waiting area for those who've already ordered. I almost never dine-in because it's a really unpleasant experience. Their pastries and service seem to be suffering too -- they've been out of macarons for about a month and a half now, and I've had some dry/stale pastries there recently. On my most recent experience, it took about 25 minutes for them to fulfill my sandwich order. I still love their food, but I do wish they would try and control for the crowds/come up with a new system. Their food/experience is starting to suffer.

  • Amy D.

This review is for their macarons only. My friend was nice enough to bring some macarons with her when visiting the Bay Area, so I got to try: Salted Caramel, Green Tea, Orange Blossom?, Pomegranate, Hazelnut, Citron ($2.50/each, yelp.com/biz_photos/nuvr… ). The salted caramel, green tea, and hazelnut flavors were my favorites, and the rest were ok. However, the consistency of the macarons were just ok- they seemed a little overbaked and too crumbly, and almost had no chewy texture. Based on this macaron experience, I would recommend only ordering their baked goods instead of wasting your money.

  • Beverly C.

Even though the pastries are amazing the customer service here sucks. I asked for more cream cheese for my cheddar jalapeño bagel since they spread a. The manager looked at me like I was asking for a million dollars. As good as their pastries might be, they need better people representing this place. Won't be coming back.

This is a great place to grab lunch. I'm a big fan of their bagels, but just about everything else looks just as delicious. Definitely a good stop during your break. A couple times, the employees have seemed distracted when preparing my order. It's not a big deal, but last time I was worried they were going to forget my food. It's probably not indicative of any larger issues.

I think Nuvrei marks the final stop on my croissant quest of Portland. I guess saving the best for last really didn't apply in this situation. I had Milk chocolate macaron- I love macarons and rarely, if ever, have I found one that was not great. It's just two sugar cookies with sugar filling...how else can you go wrong besides serving expired macarons. Unfortunately, Nuvrei's macaron was just not good. It's actually the first macaron I've purchased that I didn't devour. The cookie portion was flat instead of fluffy and the ganache, or filling was hard and didn't taste good at all. Each macaron on display had similar characteristics. I don't know, perhaps this is the Nuvrei spin on things. I was also looking to sample the chocolate croissant but there were none left. This happens so i wasn't too disappointed. Instead I tried the chocolate almond croissant. It wasn't bad at all. A nice almond filling and a decent amount of chocolate that was at times decadent I may come back to try a true chocolate croissant, but the macaron disaster of November 4th will not be forgotten. Shame on you Nuvrei. Shame on you Liz Crain these are not how macarons should look, feel, taste, or be experienced! Summary in 3 words: Go to Pearl

My fiancé and I are not real bagel fans but cannot seem to get enough of the ones here at Nuvrei. They are much softer than your typical bagel and have a delicious flavor selection. Their sandwiches and coffee are also worth a try. And to too it off, the staff is helpful and accommodating. They even gave us a free cookie on the way out!

Sorry guys i really had great expectations on this place but after spending more than 8$ for a very dry - I repeat: really dry - walnut croissant, and a burnt small cappuccino I cannot give more than 1 star... There are way better bakeries in Portland with so much more normal prices... I could have given second chance for food and drink but really? 8$?

Came in with my girlfriend for the first time tonight and were very pleased! Got a few different macaroons, the raspberry one is the BEST! I also got a berry scone and a chocolate croissant to take with. The scone was delicious and the croissant as well as i was told ;-) but the best thing in the whole experience was the service. The barista was amazing, supr friendly and kind...not to mention, created an awesome Caramel Latte, that I will definitely be back for. Overall, this place is cute and cozy with excellent service. If your a Portlander or just checking things out, its definitely worth trying!!!

I eat one of their chocolate-walnut meringue cookies every single day. Best cookie ever - chocolate or otherwise - and not too sweet, like the European style they are. I've shared them with so many people. They're all in love with them, too. And their milk chocolate macarons are also fantastic. I didn't think I was a chocolate fan, but I guess I like only good chocolate. :) And...organic sausage in their breakfast sandwiches!! I've been terrified for so long when I get a breakfast sandwich somewhere of what, exactly, I'm eating. No fear at Nuvrei! Organic, local, best quality products they can get their hands on. Elated to find healthier, totally ridiculously delicious food choices. And you can taste and smeel the quality. Eating without fear. So, so nice.

This bakery is a money sucking machine. Because of them I carry air-tight Tupperware containers all the way from Vancouver, BC just so I can preserve the freshness of these yummy bagels. When I smell the baked goods all hell breaks loose. It's even worse when I go in there empty stomached. I love their bagels. LOVE. I love "everything" bagel, and Jalapeno cheddar, poppy seeds and more. I've had their scones, croissants, and muffins and my gosh...boy are they all good! I am not a fan of macarons but their salted caramel macaron, oh shut the front door people! If you didn't have one when you stop by, you'll regret.

Exploring Portland by Coffee: Day 5 (9/17/14) I visited Nuvrei to satiate my desire to have another cup of joe roasted by Heart. Again, I had a cup of drip, this time a Guatemalan cup. The people working at Nuvrei were super sweet, and I was again blown away by the coffee. This Heart cup was a little bit different, a tad bit nuttier, and I really enjoyed it. The cafe is really popular, and it felt a little cramped inside. They have a few barstools and a few seats which were fine for reading the paper, but this is obviously a place to take things to go. A really nice touch I enjoyed was that they had little carafes of water on all the tables inside. I'm always drinking lots of water after I've had some coffee, and this was a convenient, unobtrusive touch. I've been back a few more times and had a few of their pastries also. Their cinnamon danish is TO DIE FOR! I absolutely loved it. It's the perfect balance of carbs and sugar. All in all, pretty great shop.

This small little cafe does not have much seating and can get pretty packed. But as you look over to their glass display, it contains an array of pastries are so cute and unique and all look so delicious and irresistible! I had a cup of their mango iced tea, cheddar &wild salmon pretzel, and a chocolate croissant. The iced tea was refreshing, but could use a little more flavor -- just tasted like an unsweetened iced tea. I loved the cheddar and salmon pretzel. The cheddar part is actually on the pretzel itself, not in the contents. In between is a thick layer of cream cheese with dill and big slices of smoked salmon. You really cannot go wrong with this combination. At first I thought this little pretzel sandwich will not fill me up, but the flavors were quite heavy and satisfied me; definitely can't eat too much of this. The croissant was also great, perfectly flaky and had just the right amount of chocolate! This is the perfect place to go to alone or with a couple friends for brunch/ coffee. I went with a pretty large group of people and that did not work out so well. We planned to get our things to go but most of us just ended up awkwardly eating our things inside because it took so long for everyone to get their food.

5 years I have been goin and the cafe has aged well over time. Before they remodeled into a small cafe and expanded hours, it was difficult at times to come by to snag some of the best baked goods I've ever had. Fast forward to the current times and they made my wish come true. Open 7 days a week and reasonable hours, I can finally get my croissant fix with no worry. Their First Thursday event I attended 5 years ago essentially got me sold as a regular customer to this day. The staff works hard around the clock to make sure every customer is taken care of. The line can be long at times in the early morning weekends but it does go fast. You get to see the staff bust away on those carefully crafted sandwiches for those craving the savory side. The baked goods and pastries on display will make you want to stare all day if you could. After you make it to the front of the line, you may be tempted to order a macaroon or many - yes 1 may never be enough as I learned the hard way this past weekend. They melt in your mouth faster than an M&M could. I try not to indulge in bagels as much anymore but I couldn't pass up the freshly baked bagels on site. I tried the turkey and avocado sandwich with the jalapeno and cheddar bagel of choice. Given that they are pretty generous with the toppings, the sandwich held mostly together. The jalapeno still retains some heat even after its been baked onto the bread. Just the right amount of crunch and chew with each bite and very little crumbs were left in tact. On another visit, the morning-croque madame I chose as the next savory devourer. The fried egg nestled inside the bread looked daunting to eat. I was afraid once I bit into it, the yolk would be oozing all over the place. Surprisingly, the textures remained in tact as I ate in silence. Ham was not too salty and wasn't dry either. If you want to impress someone or feel sophisticated - order the Madame! Lastly - the chocolate almond croissant is probably my favorite pastry of choice. It is probably the flakiest, buttered, chocolate and almond bombed croissant you will find in town. I try to buy one with each visit if they are available. One of these days they will be out and I will probably shed a tear - hopefully that won't happen any time soon. The cookies are worth buying - they are soft and very chewy for those who like that kind of style. The double fudge is my cookie of choice. The coffee is made locally along with the juice cocktails they have available. Seating is plentiful outside and that is probably the best place in indulge in this heavenly spot!

Great croissants with a nice variety of toppings/fillings, but Danish pastries the Danes would laugh at - too sweet and boring. Nuvrei was a nice treat for a Sunday morning pastry. The space is clean and modern, but on the verge of being a little too full of itself. I got my croissants to go, so don't have anything to share about the dining-in experience, but our treats were wrapped nicely and enjoyed at home!

Best bakery I have ever been to-- hands down. Everything was so good that I'm getting hungry and frustrated that I have to wait to have more of it. Go. Go now. now.

I finally made it to Nuvrei, and I went a little crazy. I wanted to try everything, but settled for a latte with a chocolate almond croissant, chocolate brioche, Macarons, and the breakfast Croqiue monsiour sandwich. Everything, and I mean everything was incredible. Nuvrei was everything I hoped, with one exception, it's a very small space, 3 tables, and a 6 person bar. Downstairs is a Macaron bar. I got a few to try myself, the Salted Caramel and the Pistachio. The Macarons were light, not overly sweet, and packed with flavor. I also got a gift box with one of each flavor for my friend's birthday. She loved them and couldn't believe how stunning they are. Like little pieces of scrumptious art. I will be back as many times as it takes to try everything, plus some. Yum!

I ate the cheddar bacon biscuit and I got two other pastries I still haven't tried but they looked AMAZING and I can't wait to eat them! Picked up a bunch for a presentation but I will be back to have a bagel and some coffee or a sammie soon. Professional, hip, clean and really fun atmosphere. Will be back!

Delicious! This place serves quality coffee and desserts. The macrons I tried were the Earl Grey, Chai, Hazelnut, White Chocolate, and Pistachio. The chai macron was my favorite. It wasn't too sweet or spicy which is hard sometimes which chai flavored desserts and teas. The earl grey was also unique and delicious. I went upstairs and realized most of the Macrons are in the Mac Bar downstairs. There was no line and they serve drip coffee downstairs as well. Upstairs they have full espresso bar. The cream for coffee is behind the counter in the fridge so you do have to ask for it. I was surprised at the cost of each macron ($2.50) as they were good but $2.50 for something that tiny doesn't seem right. I wouldn't pay more than $1.50 for something that tiny. I believe the full pastries like chocolate almond croissant is a better value and tastes amazing as well.

Great place for an afternoon treat. We stopped by to try some of the famous Stumptown coffee and an almond croissant. Coffee was amazing and croissant was good. We went downstairs to try a macaroon, we went for the sea salt & caramel and it tasted pretty amazing.

Nuvrei is pricey, but very worth it. The coffee is great and the breakfast sandwiches are insanely good. They come on Canadian-style bagels, so they are a bit lighter than your regular bagels and taste very fresh. I hear great things about their pastries, but haven't tried them yet. This place is perfect, but I wish they had more of an ambiance!

Yummy macaroons! Cute little place in the Pearl. When you walk in there is an upstairs and downstairs. Upstairs is a nice cafe with some fabulous pastries, croissants, and macaroons. Downstairs is a cute little macaroon bar just like the ones in Paris. The macaroons are so good and melt in your mouth! We always go for a little treat after eating brunch nearby.

If your place uses only 2 shots in a 16 oz drink, therefore serving a very disappointingly watery and tasteless Americano, that's fine, but don't be rude and snobby about it and charge me extra after I already tipped you well. Won't be coming back!

Worst customer service ever...the owner is a jerk ! They are hiking prices up to the roof i thought they are mixing their pastries and coffee with gold !!! Overpriced.. Location is so small no place to sit and enjoy anything there...a place to avoid if you don't wanna leave your wallet there and have the worst experience...

Nuvrei is a perfect example of how simplicity is best. Its attractive coffee house/modern design brings you in and the food keeps you there. It shares it's building with other shops and it is split between 2 floors. The top floor is their cafe that has a great display of their baked goods. There isn't that much seating, so go with the mindset of only stopping by. The bottom floor is a gateway to their macaron shop. A simple window with a rainbow assortment of macarons on display will make you feel like a kid in a candy shop. There is a nice variety of macarons to choose from so good luck in choosing! When I visited, I came for the macarons (at the time, they only accepted cash so be prepared for that). When you bite into them, you will notice a perfect combination of flavor and texture. They are slightly crunchy, yet light and fluffy. The filling has a nice smooth texture that brings it all together. Eating their macarons is an experience of its own and worth the price. It's a great place to stop by while walking around in the Pearl. They have great boxes they pack their macarons in that would make excellent gifts! Bottom line: stop by if you're visiting Portland or are visiting the Pearl District.

Poor service. I have no review on the food personally because apparently I was in the service gals way while taking a closer look at their display case, Sunday, March 8, 2015. I apparently was blocking her and she suggested a menu in a condescending tone so to keep up with the snobby hipster attitude(non native), that was her way to shoo me and my party of 5 (all natives) away. So I did not buy anything.

Definitely pricey, but the croissants are the best in town. Ham and cheese croissants are addiction-worthy. Or bring home some sesame croissants for fried egg sandwiches and impress your family for brunch.

I only ate here for breakfast and some take home snacks, but it was comparable to the best baked goods I've tried anywhere. Fantastic (though very pricey) macaroons and great and flavorful sandwiches. Worth a walk any day.

Used to love and I mean love this place. I would recommend it to all my girlfriends, in fact I would run out of BAR just to see a smiling warm friendly face and FRICKING awesome coffee. Now, not so much. They changed the finishes (paint colors from bright happy yellow to drab boring light grey), they now have a crabby, stiff upper lip not friendly barista who if you ask a question regarding the coffee or forget to say nonfat, acts as if you asked him for his left arm. Who likes paying an insane amount for coffee when you leave feeling blah. Boooooo, so sad things have changed here. Bring back the young girl who would wear overalls and greet you every time with a happy cheerful hello, someone who would remember your name and coffee order, barista's that loved to talk about your coffee and how great it is and why. Learned a lot from your old barista. Please change and bring back the good people and fresh interior spirit, you've lost me as your used to #1 fan.

The pretzel bread in the sandwiches is amazing! Well, the croissants are pretty amazing too. Yes indeed, the bratwurst sandwich I had here this past week was the best sandwich I've ever eaten. The grilled bratwurst meat was perfect - its seasonings and sweetness spot on. You can get either chips or a salad to go with your sandwich. We went with salads. For dessert, JP and I split a chocolate almond croissant. Lightly topped with powdered sugar - and containing a delicious chocolate - the flakiness and moistness of the croissant were excellent. Though this is a small restaurant with only a couple tables and a short counter, we came early on a week day and were able to snag one of the tables, upon which was already a complimentary carafe of water. If you do eat in, your orders will be served on real china, to be eaten with real silverware. If I was going to suggest any improvement, it would be to tone down the lemon just a teeny tiny bit in the salad dressing. But other than that little thing, this was a great lunch, and I definitely want another one of Nuvrei's bratwurst sandwiches. I wonder if Nuvrei is switching locations. I heard one of the staff mention something about moving downstairs.

In the 3 mornings we had in Portland we came here twice. We wanted to get out to Pine State, or Tasty & Sons, but its just so far from the Pearl without a car. I'm happy that their biscuit sandwich was delicious or else i would've been mad at myself by not getting further from the city center. Their croissants are also very good, between the almond and the plain you can't go wrong.

Croissant was excellent, but tasted a bit singed on the edges and bottom. Iced latte was really good, as was the flourless double chocolate cookie.

Beginning with some of Nuvrei's wares at Barista, amongst the half dozen selections available I opted for two, my standard almond croissant and a wild berry brioche, both from Nuvrei - the former a lackluster and soft sugarbomb loaded with far too much frangipane and powdered sugar that was only saved from the wastebasket by the richness of the coffee while the later was actually quite excellent, the only truly impressive option I'd taste from Nuvrei with a dense egg bread with a crisp and golden exterior holding a custard-like center loaded with subtle intrinsic sweetness and ripe, bursting berries bleeding deep into the core; excellent in flavor and in texture, though probably best shared given its heft. Moving next to the far-too-cutesy shop downtown and having already enjoyed a nice brunch and other quality pastries with substantial plans for dinner I decided to let my first few selections dictate whether I would order more - a good choice on my part both for the sake of cost and capacity but also for quality as my choice of two Macarons and a canele would prove to be average at best, the "Framboise - Oregon Raspberry" option featuring a gummy shell with an admittedly wonderful raspberry jam within and the "Caramel au beurre sale with fleur de sel" a nice blend of sweet and salty flavors but again lacking any crackle to the shell while the interior was almost "Sugar Daddy" sticky. Moving next to the canele, and having already had a superlative version at Courier, I found myself with mixed feelings of the version at Nuvrei largely because it was a bit overcooked - both the shell and the first few centimeters of the interior holding up admirably to the tooth while only the dead-center was the expected custard sponge. Sweeter than the average and seemingly lacking any rum, instead focusing on fresh notes of vanilla I couldn't help but think of this as an "Americanized" take on the Bordeaux classic - a suspicion that, in retrospect, seemed to plague all of Nuvrei's overly sweet and off-textured options (save for the berry brioche - something I guess I never really saw in Paris either, but definitely loved at Nuvrei.)

Solid pastries. Very flaky croissants, and rich dark chocolate. My favorite was the chocolate-almond croissant. For new parents: the shop isn't stroller friendly due to the small stairway entrance.

I'm a cheap bastard, let's just get that out of the way. That said, DAMN the chicken sandwich here was good! They're charging way more than I'm usually dropping for lunch, but on this day I wasn't paying, so GAME ON. (for the record, not that expensive, just out of my daily lunch budget for a $12 sandwich) The chicken sandwich is an amazing mix of flavors, all tied together with some sort of mayo that briefly made me forget I hate mayo. "ginger marinated currants, fennel, apple, celery, tarragon all tossed in a light mayonnaise & topped with bacon on nuvrei bread" It sounds awesome, and it was awesome. I also upgraded to the salad, which was a perfect balance for the sannich. I'm not big on breakfast or pastry, but given how good the sandwich was, I may have to check them out, too.

Delicious coffee and pastries and breakfast sandwiches. Anytime I'm in the area I have to stop by. You have to get a macaroon while you're there. Small space though so it's usually best to get you stuff to go.

going to Nuvrei is always a highly pleasurable trip! If you're seeking warm sandwiches, fresh croissants, food to go, and an array of assorted cookies to pick from -stop looking about, and come here! To Taste:] take a long hard stare at those glamorized croissants in the front case, ...now snap back to reality because you are drooling all over yourself :p Ooh on my first visit here I went a little crazy and ordered six croissants. The tried and true original croissant- was fluffy, buttery and not dry, nor crunchy, twas near perfection, a standard order in my book. That walnut chocolate croissant- a little too sweet for my liking, but tasted exactly like expected, sweet, chocolaty, fluffy, crunchy, and damn good! Read the menu, and keep re-reading, it will take you a while to decide. . . all of their warm breakfast sandwiches make me giddy with excitement The Ham & Cheese Croissant -with bechamel, swiss cheese, ham, and arugula on a sesame croissant is my favorite! I love warm savory goodness blanketed in a pastry to go bag.. heaven on the run. if you think you have had enough sensory overload, well be warned, there is still a little piece of Nuvrei waiting for you downstairs -where you will fine a kaleidoscope of Parisian macrons, and see the croissant factory, stacks and stacks of tasty, fluffy, goodness. Set Up:] expect metered street parking -it's in the pearl. located up a few stairs in a small shop with little seating along the window bar. Only two small 3 top tables and that is all -not a cozy environment and not enough room to navigate a stroller -think Austin Powers with a stroller- especially if you see a line out the door. place your order at the counter and step aside, not a whole lot of standing room once you place that order, but once it's called, head back to the bar and retrieve your amazing goodies. 4 stars:] -although everything is absolutely delicious, and I love everything I have walked out of here with; there's a few reasons why I am not feeling the 5 star review: I've seen people walk off with the wrong coffee in hand, names not clearly announced, people that act clueless about who ordered what... & the made to order coffee drinks run cold -this made us wonder if traditional latte's were supposed to be served lukewarm? at close to $5 for a small mocha, I would like to be able to drink my glamour coffee hot and without someone else walking out with it on accident. -little to zero seating if you have a stroller or child, so best to just grab and go. head to the park and enjoy. - the shop downstairs doesn't take cards, however they do have an ATM to quickly draw cash out of, however you will have to pay a further service fee.. come on with it, now my macrons cost 3 dollars more and I just wanted 2, sometimes the breaks don't break even.

A chic coffee shop located in the Pearl District near my optometrist and they make delicious macarons! There appear to be at least 3 macarons available in the cafe on the main floor on a daily basis, but when Wednesday rolls around, head downstairs to the Mac Bar. I love the Earl Grey and Green Tea. I took home a box with a second Earl Grey so the Hubz could have a taste. Will definitely go back and hopefully be early enough to try one of their sandwiches before they close. A bit on the pricey side for a petite treat, but the quality of the macaron and the flavor are worth it and top notch. A big head's up: if you don't plan on purchasing anything upstairs, the Mac Bar is cash only. There is an ATM right next to their counter, but it was broken the day I went. Luckily they allowed me to make my purchase upstairs and I decided last minute to order an iced chai tea before they closed for the day. The coffee bar space is lovely with very tall windows to people-watch from.

What a perfect Portlandian jewel. The almond croissant may be the tastiest pastry I have ever had and the breakfast sandwiches are delicious too. Most importantly the atmosphere is idyllic and watching the chef prepare the food you can see it's made with care and love.

Pastry in the morning is the best way to start the day and Nuvrei is my top choice when I'm in Portland. It was quiet at 7am in the bakery which is really nice. They had all their pastries and baked goods displayed in a glass case (just like jewels :) I got one of my favorite things: a cinnamon danish ($4) and it was a delicate and ethereal as I remembered. I also got for later a chocolate almond croissant ($4.50) but couldn't resist taking a bite. The flaky croissant pastry is everything a croissant should be and I think it is one of the best croissants I've ever eaten. The almond is subtle and smooth and the chocolate is a nice bittersweet variety. Oh Portlanders I envy you so much for being lucky enough to have this bakery in your City. I'm going to stock up on a pastry tray and taking it home as my most prized souvenir.

No joke, one of the best croissants I've had (and I won't even qualify that with in the US) and that's coming from the privilege of several trips to France trying dozens of boulangeries. It's difficult to get quality baked goods that are faithful to the motherland's and I was very pleasantly surprised to find one of the best croissants I've had the joy of eating. The pastry was light, flaky and airy, yet still pleasingly buttery. I could have easily eaten three and these aren't small. Marius, the owner, definitely takes pride in his product and I can't wait to try more pastries, macarons, and coffee.

Can a sandwich change your life? Yes. Yes it can. Like a fool, I did not remember word for word the name of the amazing sandwich but I did have my wits about me momentarily and took a photo of it and I can tell you it was a salmon affair dressed with English cucumber, hard boiled egg and a dusting of arugula perched atop THE most delicious and beautiful bread I have ever encountered in my life. I took a bite and for the love of all things holy! Angels began to sing and if my mouth wasn't so full all the time I would have been speaking in tongues and possibly frightening the other customers. By Jeebus! I understand what it is to be born again. I have never been too "into" sandwiches, but that has now changed... I am a convert.

the food is ok. chocolate almond croissant was delicious and the first time my bagel sandwich was good but the second time I went the bacon was under cooked and was mushy/greasy. I asked them to cook it a little longer, you would have thought i had asked her for a kidney. $8-10 for a basic bagel sandwich. They have the nastiest attitudes and slow detached service which has prevented me from going back even though I love bagels and this place is super close. The bagels there are small and I have had better ones from grocery stores.

I'm surprised by all of the great reviews of Nuvrei. I thought it was just OK. I had a chocolate almond pastry and it was too soft and fell apart where ever the chocolate was marbled throughout. Most importantly though, it just didn't taste that good to me. My family ordered bagel sandwiches. They were nicely presented (and everyone working at Nuvrei was pleasant) but again, the bagels were like a too soft bread, not, in my opinion, what a bagel should be at a all. The bacon on our breakfast bagels was too thick to chew and had tons of chunky fat. If you are looking for very very soft pastries set equidistant from each other on bright white plates, and served by men with good haircuts, then Nuvrei is your place. I wouldn't go there for the food.

large Breton cokie.. some wicked hybrid between a shortbread and a kouing amann...it's buttery and chewy inside. The bacon cheddar biscuit....that thing was perfect for breakfast with coffee. YUMM... still as good as I have always remembered them when living in Portland.

I gained 35lbs from eating here every morning. Everything is comparable to pastries in France! Love it! The only negative comment: the service! I can't stand how slow they are! It takes them like 5 minutes to get you a crossaint sometimes. The system is terrible!

Huge thanks to Joe M. for introducing me to Nuvrei! It's a small and quaint bakery that I'm sure I've passed a million times and never really noticed...but certainly heard great things about. Upon entering you and filled with the fantastic aroma of baked goodies. I couldn't help but ordering plenty of to-go items. For lunch I decided upon the salmon/cream cheese on a jalapeno cheddar pretzel bagel. It was flippin fantastic. Unlike a normal bagel, these were a bit thinner and made from pretzel dough. Perfectly chewy and delicious. For $4.75 you really can't beat it. My to-go items consisted of an almond croissant, a couple macarons (seriously, do yourself a favor and get some), a cookie, and a berry scone. Over the past couple of days I have noshed on these items and all were good. The macarons being my fave. The rhum raisin was mouth watering. Butter cookie = good. it was nice and soft just how I like em! Almond croissant = not the best I've had but flavorful none the less. wish it had been a bit more crispy on the outside. Scones = not overly sweet and great for breakfast The staff does a great job of dealing with the crowds and are pretty prompt on getting your food out. Also super friendly as well. There's a few tables/bar type seating inside, free jug-o-water if ya fancy, and overall great food. Next time I definitely want to try out their homemade juices and lemonade. They looked so good!

$3 for a chocolate chip cookie? $4.50 for a croissant? No thank you! I got the salmon bagel lox which had a razor thin layer of salmon for $8.75, it was just ok. I don't care how "artisanal" this bakery is they shouldn't be overcharging this much for in Portlandia and fooling the gullible Pearl District residents. Walk few block north for lovejoy bakers, it's worth it.

Some of the best pastries I've ever had!!Went here for a quick breakfast, and I must say, this place was phenomenal! The interior of the restaurant is very nice. Sleek, modern and clean. This place does get busy and there aren't many tables and chairs so be warned. Service was excellent though I do think they could find ways to make their serving process more efficient and less time consuming. The cinnamon Danish was delicious. The fruit croissant was the best croissant I've ever had, it was so flaky and light while the inside wasn't too sweet. The scones were also good, though a little dry. The coffee is great. 5 stars for a great experience!

POOR customer service. Been a regular customer since it opened but haven't been back until recently. The service now has definitely gone downhill. I used to recommend Nuvrei to friends and unfortunately can no longer do this. The simple act of ordering pretzel bagels should not be accompanied by condescension. The food is good but the service has forced me to stop going. To the owners: please reevaluate your staff for poor customer service. You have lost a long time customer and with the lack of service I witnessed towards others after me, there will be many, many more.

I've stopped in to grab a cup of coffee in the past but tried the sausage breakfast sandwich the other day. Fried egg, sausage and basil on a bagel like bread. It was excellent! Not real big and not cheap ($10.50 w/medium drip coffee) but it was worth every penny! I'll be back for sure.

I think I gained 10lbs just walking in here. I walked out with a mixed berry brioche, chocolate almond (yes, in perfect harmony!) croissant, a smoked cheddar pretzel and a ham and cheese croissant. Maybe I should make that 15 lbs. Don't worry...I am going to share.

The best Almond Croissant, EVER! In addition to the most delicious croissant is a beautifully put together almond filling. So unique and addictive. I have yet to find a croissant that compares to that of Nuvrei's. Send me to Paris, then we'll discuss. I love Nuvrei! Again, I don't have a picture, because I ate it before I took out the camera. Ugh.

So on recent information learned. Nuvrei supplies pastries to coffee shops all over Portland (call me an idiot). So, while as much as I love the little spot (love is an exaggeration because I wish it was bigger and had a sit down space) I'm happy to learn that I can find Nuvrei in many places and no longer have to worry about their business. I do wish their website would list businesses that carry their pastries though, that would be nice.

I think I am violating some Yelp rule and I shall be shunned forever because I haven't actually sat down inside yet. I've been walking past and my dreams have come TRUE! The Café portion of Nuvrei is opening in a week! or so! It looks too cute from the window outside. I called to find out what time the cafe closed but it's not yet open. I HEART Nuvrei and soon I will have the chance to sit at the cafe to gorge my self on some croissants! She said Oct 11. Count down!

Really like the simplicity of this café. I ordered the Berry Brioche and a small coffee. It was okay. I may have expected better out of this place when I saw the reviews... The coffee was good, not great, but good. I give it three stars because it's ambiance makes for a good early morning break.

Nuvrei makes my heart sing with their lovely wild berry brioche and numerous croissants. The wild berry brioche is spectacularly moist, sweet, and rich in a comforting but not overwhelming way with tart, slightly sweet berries acting as a wonderful contrast. So good!

  • Formicas F.

LIve a block away and I have slowly become addicted to their croissants. SO fresh. after just visiting France, I can tell you Nuvrei could compete and win in the motherland! Amazingly fresh and authentic goodies. MUST try. Who cares if it's in the basement when the goodies taste like they are made in Heaven...

  • Pintcho W.

For me, the definition of 5 stars is a place that serves craveable food, with genuine service, and coming out smiling, totally sated every time. That place is Nuvrei, c'est vrai! All the pastries are picture perfect and drool-worthy. (except the macarons, for which I'm not a fan, and cannot speak for them)..but the sesame pretzel croissant is expertly made, with just enough crunch and chew, without the greasiness and yet you can savor its richness, with that hint of salt. I prefer it neat, but it goes well enough with the roast turkey, and slather of raspberry cream cheese. Another favorite is the berry brioche..so rich and decadent..nice crystallization on the outside, and moist and dense with custard on the inside...accompanied with a macchiato, and you're set for the day. You can't swing a cat in the place, but that's what makes it so charming...a little touch of Paris, but with an even bigger cheerful Portland heart.

I actually like Nuvrei pastries and frequently eat them at Stumptown and other locations. However, yesterday I stopped into their bakery location to try the macarons on the advice of yelpers. As I walked into the small alcove I could clearly see four or so people busily working in the kitchen. I waited for someone to acknowledge me. And waited, and waited. At the three minute mark it became really awkward. I wasn't looking for them to drop everything, a tossed off "Be with you in a sec!" would have sufficed. But there was no greeting forthcoming, despite the fact at least two people had to have seen me as they carried things back and forth. Now, I wasn't on macaron search for me, but for an event I am throwing, and the last vendor I want to work with is one who can't expend even minimal effort on customer service. I walked out, and no one said a word.

picture perfect goodness. I always feel guilty eating bagels, but not here. The bread to veggie ratio is precise. Just an added layer.

HOLY YUMS! apparently the cafe at Nuvrei is brand new, was taking a walk around town and remembered I had bookmarked this place as a must try..and was most definitely not let down. Spent way too much time looking at the entire menu trying to not salivate and finally voted on the chocolate croissant and ham/cheese croissant with added bacon! the rumors are true about these croissants! flakey and delicious..i was sharing with the bf and we were making a MESS shoving the chocolate croissant down but savoring every flavor. Cafe was cute and nice but I just felt too messy of an eater to be allowed to sit in there. We ate the ham/cheese/bacon croissant outside and almost died of happiness. Anyone who decides to get a ham/cheese...ADD THE BACON! just do it. cafe is cute but set up somewhat awkwardly..you order at the counter where you're tempted by macaroons of various flavors then when you're ready to pay there's a wee little podium/desk/counter [whatever you want to call it] behind you to pay for your goodies. strange...why not just have the register where you get your food?...really...not that big of a deal and it's not like it really matters or changes anything about the food, or service, or experience. it's just random things I question. In conclusion...great, cute, delicious place. Nice/friendly workers who let you take your time looking at the menu, don't eat inside unless you don't mind making a mess, can't wait to try everything else!!

Bye-bye bikini body, hello Nuvrei with you mouth watering pastry case! A taste of marionberry scone here, a nibble of bacon cheddar biscuit there, a mouthful of ham & cheese croissant, and a swig of stumptown to wash it all down. If you find yourself in the Pearl and in need of sustenance, do yourself a favor and skip that awful Boyds Coffee and head a few blocks over here instead, your taste buds will thank you. And personally, I know my office monday morning muffin meeting is going to be much more pleasurable now that we will be getting our pastries from Nuvrei.

Having returned to Nuvrei several times, the macarons have improved. The texture and cooking seems more refined. I still think they are slightly more dense or heavy then they should be, but they are the best in Portland. The Bagels are phenomenal, they have a wonderful yeasty or malty taste, like you might find in Montreal---I do wish the texture was more chewy and bagel like, but the flavor makes up for this, they are also certainly the best bagels in Portland, they may be the best bagels in a lot of places actually. The Oat Currant bar seemed dry to me, I have respect for the shape of the bar, but the taste and texture needs improvement. The almond cookies are definitely one of the better cookies you will find anywhere. But, of course, the staff are dreadful. Totally disinterested in the customers, more vacant hipsters staring off into unfashionable space while you're standing in front of them. A bakery is generally an exciting place for clients to be, it is like a candy shop. When someone goes through the effort of producing such high quality baked goods they should hire people who will share in their dedication, or should at least be capable of faking it and providing adequate service. In this economy it should be easy to find employees who have good manners, or at the very least don't appear to be bothered by the presence of customers. However, every bakery in Portland, suffers from this 'employee' problem---but it still doesn't make it okay. Surely if they can provide great customer service at Dutch Brothers, they can figure it out at a fairly high-end bakery.

I have worked in the Pearl for over ten years. I have my favorite haunts but today I had the occasion to be on 10th and Flavel and walked by this place. It smelled divine. I went in just because of the delicious smell. I orderd their special, aTuna Melt sandwich. It is the best tuna melt I have ever had. You wouldn't think a TM could be improved much but I am telling you I have died and gone to heaven. The only thing wrong was it is so large I can only eat half. Because they don't sell half sandwiches I will need to find someone to go with me next time so we can split one. I forgot to mention they also make their own potato chips which are also the best I have ever had. So glad I stumbled onto this place. I am going to try their Tiramisu next!

I really like the interior design of this place - relaxing & modern. My friend and I sat by the window as I sipped my latte (made with bold coffee and just the right amount of milk) and she sipped passion fruit lemonade with a pistachio macaron, which tasted very much like pistachio except the whipped filling was too fluffy.

The flourless chocolate cookies they make are the best thing I've put in my mouth lately. Too bad the counter lady forgot to put it in my bag. I don't think she charged me for it so we're all good. It was my first time actually at the bakery, I usually buy their stuff at one of the local coffee shops they sell to. They only have drip coffee, but that's what I drink anyways so I'm happy. There are no seats-but there is a nice park nearby, Jamison Square. The SO said that the almond croissant was a little dry, but my blackberry danish was delicious. I also had the macaroons. They were only $1.25. Pix has much better macaroons, but they're more expensive. Chocolate cookie, me want cookie.

Walking down the steps, into the basement of this building on 10th Ave, makes me feel like I am a member of a secret society. It is a hidden gem. They supply the pastries for Stumptown locations. The best scones in all of Portland can be found here. They are moist and not too sweet. I love scones, but have failed to actually find any that I like, in Portland. The blueberry scone is my favorite morning one. The chocolate orange, is what I usually get to "save for later". I just tried their bacon-cheese scone, which was amazing. It had actual chunks of thick bacon and no grease. I never usually select this type of scone because of the grease factor but these are worthy in every way.

I tried their macarons and wasn't too impressed. The salted caramel mac was way too salty, and it just overpowered the caramel instead of complimenting it. The rose and strawberry jam macaron tasted almost completely of almond extract. I have no idea why almond extract was used, especially since it masks over flavors. I didn't taste any rose and barely tasted any strawberry. The hazelnut mac was the only one that was true to its flavor, but I would have preferred the addition of chocolate to it. I was pretty disappointed overall, especially at $2 each. Their tea was good, and my boyfriend liked his almond croissant. Wouldn't go back again, though.

Price and service don't get it to 5 stars here, but their drinks and sweets are of hard to find quality, and that, deserves a standout rating. They have natural very polite relaxed service to try and make you slow down. It's not a grab and go, more a debate and savor. The hot chocolate - tasted like an artisan liquid light chocolate and was served at the perfect temperature (it's not coffee, it shouldn't burn). Best hot chocolate I am like to have in years. Now the bitter sweet, you definitely pay a premium at $4 a cup. So yes - incredible quality - but it's in the 'save up and I'm feeling good' category. Not a daily morning breakfast place.

Dismayed as we were to discover that Two Tarts was closed on Mondays, we sought out another venue to satisfy our parting pastry predilections. Enter Nuvrei. Now I'm no pastry expert, but my wife is, and most of these comments are a direct result of carefully evaluating the confections we ordered. Easy to miss, this tiny bakery is a grab and go kind of joint, downstairs in a brightly lit, but poorly ventilated basement. There's literally a small pastry shelf, a coffee pot, and about 4 square (SRSLY, Jennifer W. I feel you) feet of standing room in which to order. We sampled a bit of everything. Brioche, croissant, and scone. The blueberry scone was lacking a bit of salt, and felt a bit too cakey. Flavors were yum though. It went fast. Next up. Almond Chocolate Cwuhsohn! (in my best French accent) This was also yum. Honestly, it felt a bit too sweet. Somehow the buttery-ness didn't translate into the overall flavor profile, and again, felt lacking in salt. This butter issue also made the croissant a bit too dense and not flaky enough. Almond chocolate filling was splendid though. The winner was definitely the almond brioche. This was balanced perfectly. Salty, sweet, fluffy, moist. Just divine. If you can only order one thing here. Get this. One last comment, and perhaps the biggest reason for not giving 5 stars...the guy who helped us..and the word "help" is generous indeed, had the personality of a slug. We showed up at nearly 11 am and received nary a smile. Inquiring about more coffee/beverage options than their simple pot was met with a blase shrug. Seriously. The guy could've been a robot. Needless to say we ventured off on our own and found drinks without his "help". Meh.

Nuvrei is an awesome, cozy, fresh, delicious café with friendly service. Love the menu and the quality of their food. I had the shrimp endive salad and a skinny vanilla latte- YUM!!! Their butter croissant is the fluffiest and freshest I've had in a long time! Highly recommended!

I feel lucky enough to live near dessert cafes/places. This place called Nuvrei is 5 minutes walk from where I live. They offer around 10 or more different flavors of yummy Parisian macaroons. It is a small cafe in Downtown Portland with a maximum occupancy of around 20 people. Not only macaroons, they also have different kinds of sandwiches, croissants, bagels, and lots more apart from the food display. I personally always come for the macaroons just because I can never get enough of those. So, I haven't tried any of their other choices. According to the rating on Yelp, they got 4.5 out of 5 overall, so I'm sure they all taste amazing. give-me-more-food.blogsp…

#300 I wanted to write a five star review for my 300th, and here it is: Nuvrei. Though I have not tried everything from this tiny, almost nonexistent to the public bakery, everything I have tasted is a near magical foray into baked good wonderland. Their "chocolate chewy cookie" is a brilliant use of egg whites and chocolate,. Though I personally feel that without the addition of walnuts, the texture is all wrong, many seem to enjoy this chewy wonder all by its lonesome. They use seasalt as a seasoning in the cookie, and I approve wholeheartedly. The almond brioche was the best brioche I've ever encountered, and their berry brioche followed suit. And finally, the wild berry "danish" displayed the light, unsaturated flakiness of Nuvrei's croissant dough perfectly. One thing that separates the great from the good is using high quality ingredients in a way that makes, nay, displays their sheen. Nuvrei is great.

I have an addiction to pastries and sweets that I simply do not understand... this addiction has even lead me to Nuvrei on countless occasions, even though I've been disappointed many of those times.... Let's talk positive first... I am a major chocoholic... && oh boy does Nuvrei make one MEAN (well, technically two, one with nuts and one with choco chips) chocolate chewy cookie... it's a perfect combination of chocolate and chips or nuts in a decadent, rich cookie... my only gripe is the huge salt crystals that they use in the cookie. To me, it makes for an unpleasant salty surprise that I'd rather pass on... Other than this cookie, sadly, I can't say that I've enjoyed any of the other pastries... I failed to understand why this place is raved as having the best croissants around Portland... of all the bakeries I've tried, Nuvrei has to be one of my least favorites (for the plain and almond). The croissants weren't the flaky, or buttery, or melt-in-your-mouthy kinds that I've come to love; but instead, and please don't kill me, they were the quality of grocery store croissants :( Finally, I had high hopes for their scones because of the good reviews too... but why was my cherry almond scone super dry and unflavorful??? I fail to understand, yet again... Regardless of my own shortcomings in understanding the complexity of life, I've learned to accept that strong addictions cannot be overcame in one day... and to satisfy my cravings in the mean time, I must surrender, even to a OK place like Nuvrei.

Almond croissant was amazing, but that was it. The macaroons are subpar compared to other bakeries. Smoked salmon bagel pretzel was overpowering and I could only take a couple bite.

  • Paulina L.

I really like their croissants ( almond and chocolate). I order 5 macaroons and turn to like the rose and chocolate. :D I really like the place as well. They have a beautiful place to get some inspirations in writing. I will come back to buy more rose macaroons and enjoy the cafe.

We are so blessed in Portland to have so many fantastic bakeries to meet our daily need of croissants and cookies. We love everything on their menu and have a difficult time picking just a few every time we walk in. Their almond croissant is one of the best in town, and their flourless chocolate cookie is quite heavenly.

This should really be two reviews- I just moved to the neighborhood and come here frequently! review 1- The food/coffee is Amazing!! the macaroons are great, coffee always pleases and the atmosphere is very French! Do not expect a NY style bagel, but the bagels are good in there own right, a bit salty, soft, fresh, and when toasted nice and warm!! review 2- They are soooooooooo slow!! I dont know if I can emphasis this enough! they move at the speed of Molases in January in Alaska!! It has taken me as much as a half an hour to get a cup of drip coffee with 3 people in front of me.... seriously do you just go grow the beans, roast the beans and then brew the coffee? they almost always have 3 people working behind the counter but still cant manage to get me in and out the door in less then 10 min (thats really slow for a coffee shop)! I enjoy this shop and want to be a more frequent visitor but the speed of there service is driving me away!!

So this is were those chewy chocolate cookies come from... And they even sell the cookie mix for them. It's like El Dorado. Or something. The ham and cheese croissants are delicious. OK, the anything and anything croissants are delicious. There are some nice salad options, too. It's a pretty good place to hang out and read the paper if there's a table open, but it's pretty small and cramped. And for some reason the coffee drinks take a really long time to make. Special El Dorado coffee I guess. Anyway, the people who work here are always really nice and friendly. I like it.

Now this place almost got 5 stars & only 1 reason why it didn't. Even with the strange way it works. In case you don't know they make to order for the most part but you can pop in and buy whatever they have available. My first taste was wowwy zowwy! The almond croissant was amazing! Mike M is right you'll cry! OK I wanted to order a small box of treats for a special occasion, to do this you have to call in an order, you can not go down there and be guaranteed what you want. OK odd hurdle but I'm flexible. Why only 4 stars, well after the GREAT 1st croissant I had I ordered a couple a while later & they were all over done, almost burnt. I did not notice until I was long gone, but the person who put them in the box new & I was sent away with them anyway. Not alright. Now normally that would be worth a larger deduction but Melissa was so nice & helpful I figure it had to be a mistake.

I am writing this as someone who has no previous experience with macarons, but $2 for something so small seemed a bit crazy. Don't get me wrong, it was tasty (we had the raspberry macaron), but when you are a bit put-off by the price it makes things less enjoyable. Sort of like how things always taste better when they are free...the opposite applies here.

    (3)
  • Max Z.

Good coffee, great bagel sandwiches, and great cookies! It is getting -1 star because both of the times that I went there they forgot part of the order. Also, their music tended to be all over the place which was kind of distracting.

OH MY GOD - THIS PLACE IS SO GOOD! I love there berry/custard/crossant decliciousness (which is probably named Brandy's favorite food in the world - or it should be).

I tried this place out because it was rated so highly, but OMG, NO!! Whoever designed this place had no intention of making customers comfortable. It's cramped and the furniture is very uncomfortable. Seriously, check out the bar stools with no foot rest that literally push your bum out of the seat. As for the customer service, there's a weird mixed message... it's like they want to be nice to you, but they're not allowed to. The coffee is decent however it takes a forever to get even a regular latte. I tried a chocolate chip cookie and my friend had an almond croissant. Tasty, if you enjoy chewing on a stick of butter. Waaaay too rich for my taste. We lasted maybe 10 minutes in the place before we decided it would be more comfortable to eat/drink while walking in a rainstorm than to continue fighting with the barstools from hell. I personally wouldn't recommend the place, its spendy and frankly, not worth the time and effort.

We like to call this place "The Secret Bakery." I walked by it probably 25 times before ever noticing it. But notice it we did! I came back several times for the croissants, and treated myself to some of their cookie creations several more times. It's a good spot. Definitely a secret worth telling people about.

Holy Smokes Batman! I've just uncovered the most secret and delicious bakery in the Pearl District, if not in the whole of Portland. I trembled with giddiness after my first taste of their berry scone. I cried tears of joy after nibbling on some chocolate-on-chocolate gooey cookie which was only made better by little bits of walnut. Did I mention I don't even like walnuts? But it was so right, that I can't complain. Oh, and I can't even talk about the croissants without moaning in delight. Nuvrei offers no place to sit, it is just 100% bakery, but go down the little stairs underneath the Olive shoestore, get your goods, and spoil your tastebuds with a delightful indulgence.

  • Angelie A.

This review is only for their French macaroons. It was good but it wasn't THAT good - I've definitely tasted better. Perhaps its all a preference but it was a little chewy for me...a bit too sweet as well. Strawberry tasted like it was just strawberry jam and my fave, salted caramel, was too caramel-y. Coffee is their best flavor! I'll pass on it next time I'm in town though.

Just visited Nuvrei. They have two great dessert options for Thanksgiving. Can you think of anything better than showing up to Thanksgiving dinner with a Hazelnut Pumpkin Cake or Autumn Tart from Nuvrei??? I mean, seriously, prepare for the hugs, kisses and gratitude. You can actually win a Hazelnut Pumpkin Cake! Nuvrei is collecting entries for a drawing on November 19. Just drop by the bakery at 404 NW 10th and fill out your entry form. And, you'll get a 10% off coupon just for entering.

I first tried Nuvrei's pastries at Stumptown. Specifically their hazelnut and chewy chocolate cookies. OMG, they were so soft and tasty! I knew I would have to visit the bakery and today I finally had my chance while walking by. The Italian likes to have a coissant or brioche with his cafe' in the mornings and being that he arrived today from Milano, I decided we'd pick something up at Nuvrei. When we got there it was already 3:30pm and they didn't have anymore cookies left. CRAP! But they did have coissants for the Italian. Then the baker asked us if we wanted a complimentary lemon scone, fresh and still warm. Hellz yeah!! That was completely unexpected but very appreciated and super tasty! Next visit will be much earlier in the day so I can have my cookies. This bakery is small but it makes quality pastries. Definitely worth a visit if your in the Pearl.

  • Vince H.

Yeah, they're hidden away on the lower level of the building on the corner of 10th and Flanders. And they're literally just a bakery, with no places to sit, so you'll have to pick up something to go. But they know how to make a GOOD croissant. St. Honore's baker has the "Meilleur Ouvrier de France" award, but Nuvrei is the place to go to pick up an authentic, buttery croissant.

I'm a big fan of Nuvrei's pastries and cozy ambiance but as for their coffee and customer service.. major set back. If you're ordering a simple cup of coffee, you'll be fine. But based on my two most recent visits, anything a touch more complex (like an Americano or even an iced coffee) is beyond their staff's abilities.

I can't remember having a better croissant. I wish i had time to try everything they make. All of the following were outstanding: chocolate almond croissant, cheddar pretzel, ham and cheese croissant, chocolate chip cookie. We had three days in Portland and we went to Nuvrei three times.

OMIGOD omigod omigod this place is SOOOOO good. I used to work across the street, and they'd have this little kiosk set up on the sidewalk on Flanders, selling their delicious bakery treats. I always got the (overpriced, unparalleled) macaroons. The Rose and Pistachio flavors are particularly delish. AND THEN! On my 25th birthday, I went out with friends and they'd scored me a slice of Nuvrei's cake. I think it was a mango papaya mousse cake or something. And it was like an orgasm for the tongue. Tart and sweet and unlike anything I'd tasted before. And it was BEAUTIFUL. I've never had an occasion to buy any of their larger desserts, but from what I've tasted, this place is tops. Wander by sometime and try it for yourself. Hit up the kiosk for cookies and coffee. You will not regret it.

Nuvrei is amazing. I have been to their retail shop a couple of times- I almost missed it the first time. It's in the basement of a building with a few other stores upstairs. There is no where to sit-only to go. Most of the space is their baking area, and they have a small pastry case, coffee, and a register at the front. The ham and cheese croissant was incredible, as were the scones, and those chewy chocolate cookies-WOW! They also carry their pastries at Stumptown.

I decided to check this place out because I had heard of their macaron selection and was intrigued. Though I was disappointed to find that the macarons were overpriced and lackluster. The passionfruit macaron had good flavor but too much filling, and the chocolate macaron was too bitter and also had too much filling. I also tried a rose macaron which tasted way too floral (even for a rose flavored macaron) and seemed a bit stale compared to the other two. Definitely not worth the $2 each. I would much rather have macarons from the Pearl Bakery to be honest.

I was gifted a big box of Nuvrei pastries and it became my breakfast, lunch and dinner for the next few days! I like Nuvrei because they do traditional pastries. They don't try to mess with a good thing. They have managed to master the art of making the perfect, by the book, pastry and that's exactly how I like it. My box contained croissants, blueberry muffins, zucchini bread, apple turnovers and zucchini bread and even bacon/ cheddar biscuits. They were all amazing in their own way.

Fabulous chocolate-almond croissant - perfect blend of buttery flakiness, chocolate and almond. Very friendly staff as well. I only wish they were in San Francisco! I also tried the lemon poppyseed scone on my last day in Portland (from a Stumptown cafe) - so good. I really want to return to Portland to try more goodies from Nuvrei, especially those amazing looking cherry walnut scones.

I am a huge fan of their pastries, and the sandwich that I had there last week was great! The bread was phenomenal, and it was the perfect size, with very fresh ingredients. I wish I could give 3.5 stars however; because even though the food was great and would keep me coming back for more at least once weekly, the layout of the new cafe is very uncomfortable. For example, it makes no sense to me to order the cookie from one person who writes it on a ticket, then places it with all of the other tickets while you wait your turn, then the same person picks up the ticket, puts the 1 cookie in a bag, and hands it to you. At the same time, you are to turn 180 degrees behind you to pay the cashier, at a different station. There is no flow, everyone confused and asking who has ordered and who hasn't, people bumping into you the entire time. I know that they are working with a very small space, but please improve this layout! I would love to be able to go in there every couple days and get lunch or breakfast, but can't handle waiting in the little crowded space for far too long and the confusion of all of the other customers. Hopefully these organizational kinks will be worked out soon, as they just opened, and then I would be happy to post a 5-star review, as their pasteries, coffee, and sandwiches are phenomenal.

If it wasn't for my friend who was visiting me from OUT OF TOWN (geez, sad that it took a guest to visit for me to discover new things here, lol), I would never have known about this place. We fell in love with their wild berry brioche (first one we had was at Coffeehouse NW, second at Stumptown, and third at the bakery itself.. mind you, this was almost 3 days in a row!), and their flourless cookies. Y-U-M! I think I like their flourless ones more than the ones with flour. Just so chewy and oh so delicious. My belly is expanding just thinking about them *le drooly sigh*

Seriously the best bagels in town...scratch that...the best bagels I have ever had! I have not had a bad thing here...the almond cookies melt in your mouth. I want it all. Don't go if you are in a hurry, the staff is outrageously friendly however inefficient.

There were 6 different flavors of macaroons offered at this place and we bought one of every kind to try them. The colors were really nice and pastel like, we lined them up and took a nice picture of them, which was soo pretty but they looked better than they taste!! I was so disappointed when I tried them, they were too mushy and the cream in the middle was too creamy and not solid enough to even hold the macaroon sides together. I really didn't like the consistency and the flavor wasn't all that awesome either. Props to the beautify colors but they really need to work on the consistency and taste!

Perfect pastries! I felt transported to Paris. From the flaky croissant to the amazing macarons!

Saw all the great reviews so I wanted to see what all the hype was. Stepped in and the man who was working the register was so rude. Not helpful at all and when we asked a question he just seemed like he didn't want to help. Seriously worst customer service. I don't know how he even got hired to be the face of Nuvrei. Never coming back. Forgot to review the macarons we got... And it didn't even taste anything like the lemon, rose, raisin rum, pistachio, passion fruit, and caramel. Maybe they were selling old macarons because it just did not taste right.

it's a great space, easy to pass up if you aren;t looking for it, but impossible not to smell the amazing aromas of their baked goods. as a patisserie they totally nailed it. macaroons galore, all kinds of other yummy sweet and savory options. as a cafe/deli maybe not quite as polished. their chicken tastes like maybe it was cooked the day before, kinda tough. other than that the chicken breast sandwich had some great flavors and was very light. If you haven't tried this place out, you need to.

Cozy, industrial chic atmosphere and adorably scrumptious goods. Featuring the greatest cookies, awesome Coava coffee, spot-on croissants, delightfully simple-yet-decadent breakfast & lunch fare, and some of the better muffins to be found (in a town sadly needing a muffin resurgence; or maybe I'm just the only muffin-nut around?) Let's all fall in love with Nuvrei.

Love their almond croissant, almond cookie and double chocolate cookie. Their double chocolate cookie mix makes cookies exactly like the ones in the shop, and taste best a couple days after baking.

Unbelievably delicate, flakey and delicious pastries. I've been eating Nuvrei for a lil while now (at coffee shops around town), but just made it to their bakery this week - the space is small, and very Pearl/intense, and they've got some quirks to figure out with their service (I waited almost five minutes - watching people who ordered after me get served - for an order that literally required the cashier to reach over and grab a bagel)- but it doesn't detract from the awesome, simple perfection that is their croissants, or their flourless chocolate cookie, or their uniquely awesome bagels, or....

The best pastries in the world? Hard to argue. 1. Girlfriend says that without a doubt, her almond croissant was the best pastry she'd ever eaten. I thought it was decent, and I HATE gooey things. Really says a lot. 2. Macarons above average, totally pointless since this is spitting distance from the best macarons in the world. At least they always have chocolate though, and super cute bags. 3. The brioche with berries is super tasty, as are the cookies. 4th and most important: The blueberry muffin. The holy grail of my search for the best muffin in the world, and it's not even chocolate chip. These things are so unbelievably good that if they were running for president, they'd win. You have to go here, you have to try them, you will love them, I promise. The end.

Hands down one of the best pastry shops I've ever been too!!!! No words can truly describe the deliciousness of the pastries that are made here so do yourself a favor and head to Nuvrei and pick up one of everything, go home, take a bite of each and you'll feel your taste buds explode and then smile because it's just that amazing you can't help yourself :-)

The pastries and croissants are absolutely delicious. I keep on going back for their cheddar bacon biscuit, pretzel croissants and danishes. If you want somthing tad heavier I recommend the croque madam.A croquet Madam is baked egg with ham and cheese served with a cornichon pickles on the side. They serve Portland's own Coava coffee and espresso which is fab. On the fruiter side the Hawaiian punch that is made in house and is so refreshing, mixture of strawberry, raspberry, passion fruit, apple and a hint of mint. Basically everything is delish at Nuvrei!

We came across this yummy patisserie 2 blocks from our house, have since moved but we drive out of the way to enjoy our mornings here. Their coffee is perfect, not burnt and the Coava hits the spot. Their prosciutto panini and blueberry muffin are the best around. The bread on the panini looks coarse but is soft and lightly salted. The crew is incredibly friendly and make the trip completely worth it.

Pastries are delicious but grossly over priced.... staff was fine but the owner was arrogant & I am not the only one who thought so. My friends in the service industry have repeatedly told me as well and that he a really bad tipper.

So, this is what I've been smelling everytime I pass by that area. Granted the store is always closed when I pass by during night time I can smell something is being baked (and in a very good culinary way). I finally got the courage to pass by when it was open and it did not fail me to a bit. They have tons of pastries that are simply eye candy. A cookie/ macaron/ croissant is not enough, you have to take another one cause it will be gone after the first step. It is that good. I've had the cheddar pretzel with salmon. It was good and filling. Their coffee is from Coava which is new to me and quite frankly, decent.

Amazing little bakery. I've always smelled the fresh oven bake aroma when I walk by and I finally had a chance to try it! I had a nice 8oz latte with hot croissant ham/cheese sandwich for brunch on a Sunday morning there. The toasted croissant was heavenly. Price was also very reasonable. (I think total came to ~$8) Street parking is easy and free on Sunday before 1 there. I'll definitely be a regular from now on. See you guys there Sunday morning! PS. I'm also looking forward to try the macarons. They have so many different flavors.

Uhm, yeah. This was the first place my friend took me when I came to visit her a couple days ago. It's ah-mazing. I would be sold on moving to PDX because of this place. Is that too bold of a statement? With that said, we did speak about how we thought the ham & cheese croissant had a touch too much rosemary...but other than that it was perfect. Flaky, hot and oh so yummy. We also got the smoked cheddar pretz with smoked salmon and that was also perfect. I wanted to get everything in there!! I would suggest getting savory over sweet for first-timers UNLESS you really had your eye set on eating something sweet. Staff was friendly and do I remember good-looking or is that not a factor we take into account when searching for a place? It was just a nice perk, ha! Next time I come to PDX, I'm definitely coming back here. The only thing is that the space is tiny, so there isn't much space to have a proper sit to breakfast with a friend. I would suggest getting it to-go and finding a nice rooftop (if possible) or a park!

Nice atmosphere. Good selection of pastries. Only issue I have is they don't wear gloves when preparing bagel sandwiches and they really look like they should. Didn't notice much hand washing and noticed the people preparing the food touch their face.

Macarons and cookies are really good! A little bit pricey but I don't mind to pay a little bit more for good food. But, the service is just HORRIBLE! If you sell good food, please have an awesome service as well!

This place has great food and coffee. I've been a regular customer spending $50-$60 a month (which is easy given their prices that in my mind should reflect the quality of the food). Unfortunately, the service is not always up the par. Last Sunday, it took almost 20 min from the time I ordered to the time my sandwich was ready. There wasn't that many people ahead of me. But the two gals in charge of making the sandwiches were chatting away with each other and not really keeping up with the orders. Not surprisingly, they put the wrong kind of cream cheese on my bagel and didn't toast it like I asked. After paying $12 for coffee and breakfast sandwich and waiting 20 min to get my order, I was very disappointed. Not sure if I will ever go back.

Tasty morsels if you ask me! A cute little cafe in the Pearl --NW Portland for you non Portland peeps. I tried the Citron, Rose and Caramel au Buerre sale. 13 different Macaron flavors total. The salted caramel was my favorite ......so far! $2.00 a pop. Croissants are awesome. I must say everything in the display case looked drool-worthy. A few highlights: They serve breakfast all day, take home cookie mixes, cold sandwiches (Smoked Wild Sockeye Salmon $10.50), special event orders and French breakfast to name a few. Their fresh fruit juice was dynamite. It's a small place so don't plan on camping out for too long. Street parking.

Loved loved this place the first time I went. I would even had given it 5 stars based on my first visit but the second time I went back was not as pleasant. Ordered my food, waited 45 minutes for my order. Obviously the cashier knew I had been waiting a long time but didn't take the time out to care or look for my order. Finally I got up and went to ask whom I assumed was the manager. He said my ticket was never printed. Finally started on my order which only took them 5 minutes to make. Wasted an hour on take out sandwiches.

A very cute bakery in the pearl district. It kind of reminds me of Craftsman and Wolves in San Francisco, if you're familiar. There is a wide variety of pastries and carbs. Love carbs. Got the smoky cheese pretzel and the pear tart to go. Both were superb and delicious. You can really tell that the items were made with care.

Macaron and pastry heaven! We were a few blocks down at Deutsche Brewery and contemplated getting dessert there... nothing really sounded *just* right... so we did a quick Yelp and saw pictures of macarons at Nuvrei--jackpot! Walked over, found it -- such a cute/clean spot. Has a tiny bit of seating to enjoy the pastries (omg the pastries...) and/or coffee (pretty coffee art~). Ended up buying 10 different macarons (out of 12 flavors, I think): dark chocolate, semi-sweet chocolate, milk chocolate, passion fruit, pistachio, strawberry, lemon, coffee, salted caramel, hazelnut, raspberry... and... dude, can't remember the last one. OH EGGNOG. Eh.. My favorites? Probably pistachio (always a good macaron) and passion fruit (such a pretty orange-y color, and tasty). I think I overdid it a little bit (I was the one who decided to buy that many... basically, I was too indecisive). Service was nice but nothing spectacular... but I would say the cafe smells ammmmazing and they make awesome macarons!

I went there this morning on my from San Francisco to Seattle. In a very long time I was made to feel like a second class citizen. Now I am the last person on earth who cares what someone thinks of me, but when I stand in front of a counter for 5 minutes without as much as a greeting or an eye contact it makes me upset. To ascertain my suspicion of some baised treatment perhaps based on my ravishing good looks and perfectly tan skin tone I was passed on for even a greeting which was afforded to several others who came after me. When I did reach the counter the curly haired cashier supervising dolt said " if you want these "man" you need to go down to our macaroon bar". Hipster man, it is sir to you, secondly say hello or ask my name. I promise you it may be a tongue twister but it is not "man". Three people behind the counter cannot say hi to a customer who unfortunately, to keep his promise still spent 30 something dollars. Would have spent 3 times as much and would have stopped every month to purchase. But your sheer coolness level, expert, instead annoyed me so much that I wrote this master piece. In summation: I may be brown in color but my cash is still green. Be nice and you may get to sell me 2.50 per macaroon 100 times over. Economics 1, judgemental imbecile 0.

Came here in our Portland search for macarons. We were able to try all the flavors they had that day: passion fruit, citrus, chocolate, salted caramel, and pistachio. My favorites were the pistachio and passion fruit. Texture-wise, I am no macaron expert, but it was very nice. And each macaron was about $2, and took about 3-4 bites to finish, so I'd say pretty typical in what I've seen other macarons being priced at.

It's amazing how a good organization will take a bad situation and turn it into big win. I visited in the late morning and was drooling over the breakfast sandwiches. I ordered the bacon croissant, which isn't necessarily a meal in itself if you're super hungry, but holy moly was it delicious...that is, when I finally got it. My sandwich took about 25 minutes to come out...which for a little coffee shop cafe is a little much. My date had ordered a chai latte a got it in a reasonable amount of time. Everyone makes this item differently...nothing of note to say about this one. They checked in on me at one point, probably when they realized they forgot about my order or something, and assured me it would be out soon. I wasn't upset...just hungry. Either way, it was delicious. I can't say I would order it again just because everything on their menu looks so good, but if you offered me another one at any point, just randomly, I'd snatch it out of your hand. We had also been eyeballing their macaroons our first time through the line and decided to get a few for the road to enjoy. We picked our 2 macaroons and when she pulled them out for us she said that they were on the house, and apologized for the wait again. Wow. A small effort but a big impact. The macaroons were very good, and more importantly they left a good taste in my mouth. I definitely recommend stopping in here for a bite id you're close by.

We stopped in here just to look, having just eaten brunch at Isabel next door. Really nice people in here and very clean. Everything looks delectable. The sandwiches and bagels, especially. Even though I was stuffed, I HAD to try a macaroon. C'mon...they're small, right? I got a strawberry rose flavor. It was a total melt in your mouth experience. Delicious. I look forward to returning here very soon.

While visiting Portland back in the spring, I had the best zucchini-carrot muffin here! It was so moist and flavorful! I have tried to replicate baking some at home but they just didn't turn out quite the same. I also took home some French macarons from here, in all flavors & colors. Those were incredible as well - some of the best ones I have had to date!

This place probably doesn't need another five star rating, but I am going to add mine to the pile. On a pastry extravaganza of epic proportions, my crew ordered the chocolate croissant, the almond croissant, the sable breton, oatmeal rum raisin cookie, chewy walnut cookie, and six macrons. Every single item was superb. The sable breton was buttery and melted in our mouths, the chewy walnut cookie was devoured in seconds. Each macron had great flavor and texture (vanilla bean was my favorite). Take all the Yelp advice - get the almond croissant. It isn't something I would usually order, but I decided to see what the fuss was over and it didn't disappoint.

If there was a question before of who is slingin' the absolute best baked goods on the west side, possibly in Portland, that question has an answer: Nuvrei. These people are doing the Lord's work, I think. I have sampled many of their offerings, and must admit they have the best croissants, cookies, and macarons I've ever had. They also make some of the most soft, delicious bagels around. They make them with a pretzel dough, so they are a little different than your average bagel, but holy hell they are good. It's a small shop, always with a line, offering full service espresso and some full meals as well - sandwiches, salads. Do yourself a favor and don't leave without a box of macarons to share with your best buds or coworkers. Pick from a rainbow offered daily, and they put them in a neat little box worth saving. They're around $2/each. In conclusion: macaron, bagel, croissant. The trifecta of goods to showcase a master baker's skills. You will not be disappointed.

Based strictly on the best croissants I've found in Portland, specifically the almond filled variety. Nuvrei Pastries is an underground bakery in the Pearl District with hours that are not to be taken lightly. Forget about weekday afternoon strolls to the bakery for a cookie. If you want an afternoon coffee accessory it would have to be premeditative. I have been to Nuvrei before, having been easily sold by their bright pink and white signs roping me in for fresh croissants. After all, they are a stone's throw from my Bar Method studio and it's always great to supplement some thigh shaking exercises with butter +sugar + flour. The major sign to look for is the pink and white one outside shown above, or else all there is from the outside is this silver sign below: The only you clue you have about going downstairs is this sign (and the hypnotizing smell of baked goods). The bakery is small inside, but at 11am on a Tuesday there was an entire row of almond croissants available for my choosing. It's sort of cultish. You select your pastry and a cup of stumptown coffee and then get the hell out of that building (if its obvious you don't work there, ie. me in navy spandex and bright red back pack). You leave, stuffing the pastry in your greedy pie hole as you pass by some bewildered tourist, construction workers and those people who live fabulous lives in the Pearl that always seem to be walking their dog or going for coffee in trendy rain boots and pearls at any old time of the day. Nuvrei uses Plugra butter, a European slow-churned butter that's higher in fat and lower in moisture to create a flakier pastry. My almond croissant ($3.00) was a normal croissant size - not American obese size. The flaky crust shattered on first bite. They do not use a marzipan based filling like most places do. Nuvrei has developed their own filling based on ground almonds, butter, eggs, sugar and rum. The filling was pure almond cream heaven - slightly oozy and bursting with fresh almond flavor. The best almond croissant yet and totally different than the competition. Nuvrei scores top marks on croissant pastry having the most airy, buttery and flaky dough thus far as well as the superior filling - original, fresh, and full of flavor.

I spend WAY too much money when I go to this spot. I'm not accusing them of anything, however, beyond have crazy good macarons. They are just so perfect, and light, and colorful, and...I always buy a dozen (at least). The food and coffee upstairs are solid too. This place isn't cheap, but they don't f%&k around.

I love the French pastries here, especially the savory thyme croissant which is flakey and perfectly baked. The espresso drinks never disappoint. There is often a line here at breakfast and lunch times, but the quality of the food is well worth the wait.

Really good food, bad service. The servers always have an attitude and just generally look unhappy to be working there. That said, the food is pretty awesome. I've even gotten catering from them and even the catering side of service is pretty horrible. The good food almost made up for it though.

I live in Arizona and was in Portland a few weeks ago and stopped by this hidden gem on my way to the airport. I was craving something light, yet satisfying to keep me content on the flight back home. This place not only introduced me to the most decadent egg sandwich I have ever tasted (try the Dante, just do it) but it also gave my fellow Arizonan baristas a run for their money based on the exceptional customer service. Friendly, genuinely friendly people work here. Delicious hot chocolate is served in a ceramic mug. If you choose to eat in, your macaroon will be served on a tiny ceramic platter. If I could rate customer service alone, I would give 5 stars. If I could rate quality and taste of the food alone, I would still give 5 stars. This place may seem on the pricier end of the spectrum, but if you're sick of the generic menu at Starbucks that offers mediocre pastries and prices that have steadily crept up over the years, it's worth it to spend the extra dollar and experience handcrafted cafe food the only way it should be made. My only regret is that there isn't a Nuvrei cafe in Arizona :(

I'm still dreaming of the Smoked Wild Sockeye Salmon. It was a pricey sandwich (10.50) but the pairing of dill spread and salmon was insane. Insane! The bread looked like it'd be super chewy and difficult to eat but it only gave back lots of love. Hazelnut macaron = whatevs. But to be fair, I'm not a macaron connoisseur. In fact, I typically have absolutely no interest in them. I AM, however, a croissant connoisseur. Chocolate croissant = delightful, but I think I'll take the regular croissant next time. Or the almond one everyone is raving about. I probably won't come back because my wallet can't afford such a thin piece of fish on bread. That's what Jesus is for.

Great walkable spot if staying in downtown Portland that serves delicious coffees, pastries, and breakfast sandwiches. They have alternate milks for non dairy drinkers and I must say venture out and try the biscuit with fried egg and jam. It's very small space, so don't expect to find great seating.

This place was AWESOME! I LOVE LOVE LOVE French macaroons so I was SUPER excited that my friend found this place on our girls trip to Portland. There was a good variety of choices and so many other really good pastries there! One of my friends ordered the almond chocolate croissant and raved about it! The barista who made our cappuccinos was great too! We watched him make the drinks, and when he thought the espresso what not up to par he started all over again!! NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL SERVICE!!!

I love this place! We go here all the time and always have great service! I'm not a coffee drinker, but their chai is excellent! They even did artwork in my chai! That takes talent. We will always come back because of the wonderful people serving and the great pastries, macaroons and drinks. :)

Is it macaron or macaroons? Either way these fancy ass cookies better be amazing for $3 a piece. They are.... pistacho is amazing, green tea is a a close second and rose is surprisingly good- tastes like pink! Staff is friendly and the coffee upstairs is from Heart which is very good.

Awesome little bakery in the alphabet district, they have an amazing array of macarons, and very colorful indeed, I tried the Chocolate ganache one, and it was splendid! Also went overboard and had the almond croissant. Was the correct decision, the croissant was fabulous! Will be going back to sample some more!

The area inside is quite small and not many seats but the food is fantastic. The turkey breast was delicious. 4.5 stars. Bread is a bit chewy but not overly so. Liked the fontina and especially the light dijon mustard. My wife LOVED her roast beet sandwich. Marinated beets with chevre. 5 stars. The macaroons were decent. Tried the rose, hazelnut, chocolate, and salted caramel. Decent flavors, not too sweet. 4 stars. I really liked my chocolate almond croissant. 5 stars. My wife thought her regular croissant was just ok. 3 stars. I really liked the passionfruit lemonade. 4 stars.

Impeccable! From macarons to bagels to croissants, Nuvrei's menu is heavenly. I have eaten many bagels in my lifetime and they all tasted the same (thick, bland and sometimes hard), until I tried Nuvrei's bagels; chewy, soft, moist, flavorful, and NOTHING like any bagel you have eaten in the states. You will leave wanting another. To cure the 'sweet tooth,' the chocolate chips cookies are impeccable - large in size, soft and chewy. One can taste each ingredient, the chocolate chips, sugar, butter, and all of the additional goodness a chocolate chip cookie entails. The cookie is cooked just enough to where you can taste the cookie dough, yet in cooked cookie form. If you are a croissant lover, whether you chose the plain croissant, chocolate croissant, or almond croissant, they are all fab - flaky, moist and buttery. I have had croissants in Paris and these are very close to what I ate in Europe.

Have yet to try their bagels and Almond crossiant. I've tried: Macaroon: They were ok, my favorite is still Pix Cannele: It was hollow when I bit into it. I've never had a hollow cannele before. The filling was custard flavor and flat on the bottom. It wasn't chewy and nothing stands out. The center was a bit too sweet. I will go back to try their baked other goods and update

Best fancy sandwiches I've ever had, and at breakfast at that. I had the turkey croissant breakfast sandwich and it was served on delicious thyme-overload flaky goodness with currants, red onion, and cream cheese. I also tried the cinnamon pasty which had a delicate glaze and hint of orange zest. The passion fruit lemonade was great, the coffee solid, quick line, the atmosphere clean and bright... can't wait to return.

I went here one day to finally try out some macarons. I've seen them around the internet forever but never got a chance to try them for myself. So one day I found myself downtown selling books to Powell's and decided to make a stop at Nuvrei. I got five different flavors, the passion fruit, lemon/coconut, rum raisin, salted caramel, and strawberry/rose. I wished that the flavors were more pronounced but aside from the salted caramel, they all tasted very similar to me. I really wanted the passion fruit flavor to taste like passion fruit, but I really couldn't even find an obvious hint of the flavor I love so much in other items. The rum raisin had a raisin in the middle, which was a nice touch. The salted caramel was obviously salted but I didn't love it as much as other reviewers, probably because I was holding out hope for the fruit flavors. The rum raisin had a slightly rummy flavor if I looked for it real hard, and the raisin helped that out, but otherwise all of these just tasted like sweet. In sum: these were okay as a first go. I've never tried another macaron, so perhaps I am not just a huge fan in general, but hopefully as I try others (I'm looking at you, Pix) I'll have other reviews that allow me to compare. Also, I went here on a hot July day and I don't know if they just don't have A/C or something (this is Portland, after all), but it was sweltering in here when I went. Like, hotter than outside to the point of being makeup melting hot (not mine, but the poor employee). Just a warning for summertime, it would probably be better to snag your things and eat them elsewhere.

Sometimes 4.5 stars gets me all hyped up for a good melt in your mouth delight. Sometimes the stars ring true. Sometimes the stars miss their mark. In this case we were left disappointed having been lured in by yelp reviews. Bought six cookies including three macaroons. There was a distinct difference in freshness across our six different cookies. The rose strawberry macaroon was clearly the freshest of the bunch. Followed by the ginger molasses, the caramel macaroon, the shortbread cookie (some fancy french name I can't spell), the pistachio macaroon and finally the chocolate chip cookie. The chocolate chip was either very dry or overcooked to begin with or at least a day old. I hate stale baked goods, especially when I just paid $12+ for six cookies. We thought everything was just barely ok. Definitely not worth the $ and so not an oh my gawd 5 star bakery. Staff was very polite. Sandwiches looked beautiful but we were there for dessert.

Dear Nuvrei, I still love your almond croissants that are packed with almonds. I still yearn for your thick, gooey, moist, chocolatey flourless cookies that tastes so so yummy after how many days. I still love your lovely scones. But the macarons? They were a bit too sweet and the almondy cookie was a bit too dense. You might learn a thing or two from the Pearl Bakery. Don't worry. I am still your devotee. No one does a chocolate flourless cookie like you!! Love always, K

Nuvrei has really grown up. The first time I came in here, they didn't have seating. You just bought your food and left. Now they have tables inside and out. The sandwiches are amazingly good. I had the breakfast size Croque Monsieur. So delicious! I must go back and try some of the other lunch items!

A few years ago when I moved to Portland, my friend lived in the Pearl. We'd spend long nights downtown, and always walk past a bakery on the way home. The smells were amazing, and I would often drunkenly shout down how I wished they were open. Fast forward to a few years later, when my friend was in town and we wanted to try out a Macaron bar. The lady that helped us was very personable, responded to my cheeky friend's jokes well (she asked if they took Euro's because they only took cash) , and asked us if we were from Portland or just visiting. She gave us a great recommendation on what type to buy (The Earl Grey, since we only had enough cash on us for two, and forgot our debit cards), and overall gave a great customer experience. We walked around the flower shop next door eating our earl grey delicacies, making what I'm sure would be considered as sexual noises by some. They were somehow both light, airy, moist, and crispy, as well as the perfect amount of sweet. The bergamont stood out beautifully in the macaroons. I have been back three times since then. I am addicted. No other macaron will ever compare. (The Sauvie Island Strawberry and Cream, and the Rose macarons are pretty delicious too). I have not even been upstairs yet, because I'm so in love, but I saw them making croissants while I was purchasing my macarons, and their technique was flawless. Note- the m bar only takes cash and has limited hours. There is a atm with around a 2 dollar surcharge (I cannot remember the exact amount) adjacent to the bar.

Let me preface my review by saying I really liked the food. However...I came here for lunch, and it just seemed like the system they have is backwards. You wait in line for a while and then you finally order. Then you wait for your food to be cooked and/or put together. They should have a system in place more like subway, where you order your food, then they make it, then you pay for it. The waiting time would be much less, and it seemed liked the woman making the food would be more productive. The food was very good. I shared a Croque Madame with my husband. It came with chips and I got fruit punch. We also got macarons, which were good, but sort of the same as everywhere else. There were a lot of flavors, but mostly average. I think maybe breakfast would be better as it looked like the pastries were amazing.

Excellent macaroons, comparable to Laudureé. The croissants are flaky deliciousness.

This place is an absolute treat! A chic cafe on the pricier end but worth it. The coffee is good, but what makes this place amazing is the food. If you're feeling sweet, the chocolate almond croissant or blueberry muffin is the best I've ever tasted. If you're feeling savory, a breakfast sandwich or bagel.

In a city with plenty of delicious food options this small, authentic yet modern patisserie stands out. Between the full macaroon bar with flavors like Earl Grey and Green Tea, and the wide range of melt-in-your-mouth croissants you can't go wrong. A perfect, decadent breakfast spot. Try the sesame croissant - you can thank me later!

Just thinking about their almond croissant is making me drool. Every single bite is heaven. *drooooooooooooooooooooooooool* I'm so glad this place is near my apartment. My waistline on the other hand feels otherwise.

Best croissants I have had in Portland. The coffee, from Heart Coffee Roasters, is also superb. Ambiance has improved since the move up from the basement.

What a find. Literally. It is located at the bottom of the stairs of a dingy business complex. We were a little disappointed that the farthest we could've gone inside was an entire 4 square feet because the rest of the store is occupied with a slew of pastry chefs in training. But do not fear for their gastronomic creations are sold at various coffee shops across town like Stumpstown. The brioche was great. It lasted throughout the week as it sat on the desk going unnoticed. It was still spongy when I finally ate it.

Not only do these guys do it right with the food and coffee(espresso!), but they are genuinely nice every time we go in there! 5 stars hands down!

This is an awesome place. It had desiccant croissants and other choices. Some of the best pastries I have ever eaten. We also went downstairs and bought some macaroons, which were delicious. I recommend the chocolate ones! The staff was professional and friendly. This was a sure find in my trip to Portland. Delish!

I got a box (7) of macarons from here. I work off 6th and Stark, so it was like a 15-20 minute walk to get here. Upon my arrival, the workers were very attentive and very friendly. They had a very nice selection of macarons as well. I kept them at my desk at work from 11 AM to about 5 PM, and when I took them home to my girlfriend, they still tasted fresh, chewy, delicious, and very very worth it. My girlfriend loved them, and if I'm craving macarons.. I know where to go.

I went to Nuvrei Patisserie & Café in order to purchase some macarons to share at work. Macarons are one of the items Nuvrei is famous for (some have called their version best in all of Portland), and these Parisan style flourless almond based treats are filled with a variety of flavorful creams and custards. What I didn't expect was how utterly sweet and charming the storefront cafe now is, and how inviting it is to want to linger over coffee or tea. I chose to get an assortment of macarons. Their variety of flavors include their Caramel au beurre sale (salted buttery caramel! My fave of what I tried!) Italian pistachio with light vanilla butter cream (my second favorite of the box) Framboise with oregon raspberry preserve Fruit de la passion with vanilla passion fruit custard Citron with lemon lime and orange zest folded into buttercream Rose et Fraise with pure rose and Oregon strawberry preserve Espressio with Coava espressio and white chocolate custard Chocolat with Valrhona chocolate ganache As I was waiting to select my macarons, my eyes kept being drawn to the other wondeful baked items they had showcased. And so that's how I "accidentally" also ordered a Bagel Sandwich. It starts with a choice of bagel here as part of a Fried Egg sandwich that includes fontina, tomato, frisée and dijon butter and cream cheese. I went with the asiago cheese bagel, but other options of their bagel, made with home made pretzel dough, were cheddar jalapeno, honey oatmeal, everything, onion, sesame, salt, poppy seed, or plain. I took a bite and just couldn't put it down and stop until it was all done and maybe shook the sandwich bag for any crumbs or smears to lick the paper clean. There are a variety of other bagel sandwiches, as well as various croissant sandwiches be it for breakfast, which they serve all day, or such as one for lunch that caught my eye that has avocado and Oregon bay shrimp, apricot creme fraiche, dill and butter lettuce. They also have just "regular" croissants (regular, chocolate, almond, or chocolate almond), scones (blueberry blackberry, lemon poppy seed with lemon glaze!), muffins, danishes, cookies, bacon cheddar biscuit or berry brioche, not to mention a whole bunch of other hot and cold sandwiches varying from your croque monsieur or madame to one with roasted and pickled beet with chevre arugula and truffle oil on their bread... My goodness the menu is big enough for a whole tri-fold menu that would rival any restaurant, not a tiny cute cafe with only a couple tables and lovely window counterbar for people watching. And each option is irresistible you will be so torn what to get. Everything is clearly thoughtfully created with love and high quality and European craftsmanship.

Wow! My partner suggested we stop by here for a quick breakfast, and I'm so happy we did! Everything was so delicious, and reasonably priced for the high quality. I had a breakfast ham and cheese croissant sandwich. Fresh baked sesame seed & thyme croissant, filled with ham, swiss, dijon butter, bechamel sauce, and only $4.50! Great deal, and so amazingly delicious. Partner had the egg bagel sandwich topped with frisee, tomatoes, and provolone. Also super tasty. The Americano coffees were made proper too. I highly recommend Nuvrei.

Stopped in here for breakfast on a Saturday morning. My husband and I asked if they had a croque madame that we had seen in one of the Yelp pictures. They said they'd taken it off the menu, but had something similar with a ham on thyme sesame croissant, and they could add an egg to it. We ordered that and it was pretty good. We also had a pain au chocolate, croissant, and a triple chocolate brownie cookie. The croissants were pretty good, the cookie was overcooked and flat, and too crispy on the edges. After breakfast I spied some macarons in the case, but they only had tea flavors I didn't want, so the guy directed me downstairs to their bakery where they "featured all the macarons". I thought it was going to be some big storefront type bakery, but it was the actual area they bake in with a table in the front that had their macarons. I picked up a strawberries and cream macaron and was unimpressed. It lacked any crispness and didn't have much flavor. Maybe another flavor would have been better?

Cut it OUT with your delicious Chocolate Brownie Cookies! OMG. They are sooooo good. Also, their bagels are my favorite. I don't eat any other bagels. They are pretzel bagels but come in all the normal flavors, such as sesame seed, poppyseed, etc. They aren't the fat, big, bready-type bagels. Those are gross. These are what all bagels should be. Good job Nuvrei. I love you.

Wow, Nuvrei really won me over with their chocolate croissant! Not only is it chocolate, it's ooey gooey rich dark chocolate. Complement it with a buttery flaky croissant, it is like a food orgasm in your mouth. The almond croissant was just as scrumptious! I liked how it didn't taste like they doused the pastry with almond extract and it actually had a natural almond flavor. You can actually see the microscopic bits of ground almonds in the almond paste! I love macarons and sometimes I think I order them just because they look so dang pretty sitting in the array of colors. I decided I would taste the rainbow and ordered 7 macarons, including one of their current specialties which is a champagne with strawberry filling. Let me tell you, that specialty macaron is seriously one of the best I've had in Portland. You can really taste the ground almond in the cookie part and the delightful sweet strawberry filling. The pistachio was all right and it was a bit chewier. The raspberry framboise was really good as well. Also, I wanted to mention that the barista accidentally made me a cappucino instead of the tea I ordered. He ended up giving me the tea and the extra cappucino! I thought that was a pretty kind gesture! Nuvrei definitely made my 8am Saturday drive to PDX worthwhile! :)

review is just on macaroons. no chocolate or vanilla macaroons?!?? those are staples! the only flavor that stood out was the passion fruit. i also tried the strawberry, jasmine green tea (think bathroom freshener), raspberry, pistachio, earl gray, and espresso. 52 bucks for 18 macaroons... I really thought they would be good like laduree status especially for that price!! sheesh. go elsewhere! its nothing special for 3 bucks a pop.

This place came recommended by a friend. Upon entering I was immediately enticed by their dessert case. Wonderful presentation. My only suggestion is to have your macaroon flavors displayed. The young man helping me behind the counter ruined my experience here because of how annoyed he looked when I asked him twice what the flavors were. I took the macaroon's home and enjoyed them. The salted caramel and hazelnut were my top two favorites! The macaroon's had the prefect blend of chewiness and firmness. $2 per macaroon is on the expensive side as well.

I've been trying to eat at Nuvrei every week for lunch pretty much since i discovered it over the summer. Their sandwiches always hit the spot; their salads are delicious and original; the macaroons are a great treat. I loved that I could order a half sandwich/half salad for the same price as the whole sandwich. My boyfriend loved the fact that when I first took him in there and he asked about mayo on the sandwiches, the lady at the counter said very firmly and proudly, "Oh, there's no mayo in this kitchen." Their mayo-less tuna sandwich was up there among my favorite sandwiches of all time. But we stopped in today and things was different. The menu wasn't displayed on the board, and the paper menus were altered. No more tuna sandwiches. No more prosciutto salad (they now only have 2 salads at all!). My boyfriend was alarmed to see "light mayonnaise" as one of the ingredients in the chicken breast sandwich. They didn't advertise a half sandwich/half salad option, although they did let me order it. But the salad vert was just arugula and grated cheese. No tomatoes or anything. Definitely not worth the price of half a sandwich. Are they trying to cut costs? Focus more on coffee and baked goods instead of meals? I don't know the answer to that. I just know I'm disappointed.

The first time I went to nuvrei with friends, their service was snotty and the coffee was average. It had only been open for a few months at that point. Fortunately, the second time around was a vastly superior experience. I would say the first visit was a 3 star and the second a 5 star. This second time around I ordered an ice tea and a grilled cheese sandwich. Easy, simple, basic. But! That grilled cheese sandwich is one of the best I've ever had. Nuvrei has wisely stepped away from the overseasoning, overcoming that so many Portland restaurants do and opted to let high quality ingredients speak for themselves. If your ingredients are solid, you don't need to complicate things. My humble grilled cheese was just that; a perfect, simple, grilled cheese sandwich. I'm so glad that Nuvrei has improved not only their service (much nicer and more professional this time around- not the sulky hipster chic who stared us down the first time we came here), but embraced the concept of 'less is more.'

I've been waiting and anticipating for the past year on Nuvrei to open their cafe store.....Oh they were soooo worth the wait! In my journey to find the best croissant on this side of Paris, I finally found it! Hellllooooo Nuvrei!!! Their cafe is above the underground bakery in the Pearl, it's very cute and small. When you first walk in, note the yellow arrows on the floor and follow them! You will be taken to their sandwich prep area where you can drool over the menu and try hard to decide on what to order, hot sandwiches, cold sandwiches and salads...a few steps over you will see the pastry case filled with gorgeous, flaky, pastries. How can you choose just one, or even two?? We took more than a few to go! In our assortment of pastries, well they were all good, I can't pick a favorite! The Chocolate croissant was the BEST ever, I mean ever, I have had! You can see all the layers of the pastry, the taste is so light and flaky, not to greasy or buttery, just perfect! We also got to sample mini macaroons the owner was giving out as we waited for our sandwich order. They were also very tasty, perfect, not to sweet, just right! Their flourless chocolate cookie was also off the hook! Chewy, nutty and chocolaty! Everything looked so good, I can't wait to come back for more! They also offer sandwiches and salads. A little something for everyone from PB and J to Croque Monsieur. They also have breakfast that is served all day long. We opted for the smoked salmon on mauricette bread and a prosciutto endive salad with walnut sherry vinaigrette dressing. This was just right for two people to share, the salads are huge and the sandwiches are big too. It's a good thing I do not work downtown, cuz my ass and hips would be ginormous and the bank account empty!!!

Love this tiny cafe. It is tiny however so don't come with a group in winter and expect to have a place to sit. During nice weather they have cute tables all along the sidewalk. The pastries are divine and I'm addicted to their morning croque madame. Lastly the staff is super friendly.

Love at first bite is how I would describe my relationship with Nuvrei. I absolutely love this place! It's only been a few days but I can't imagine my life without this bakery. Hands down the best almond croissant I've had in the US. Their homemade bagels are super delicious too. Moist and fluffy goodness made out of pretzel dough. Nuvrei has ruined it for me because I don't think I'll ever be able to eat another grocery store bought bagel again. Tried a few macarons too which were pretty good and my favorites were the espresso and salted caramel ones. The only downside is their coffee is too acidic for my taste, but I'm willing to overlook that minor detail because I'll just bring my own coffee in the future.

What happened to your macaroons? It's the most disappointing thing I've tasted 4x in a row. First 3 times I thought it was coincidence but now the macaroons are hard to chew, rubbery, crusty enough it squeezes the filling out all over the place. I have to believe this can't b coincidence anymore. Oh, and the croissants have been slightly burned the last few times I ordered them :(

  • Jillian F.

I couldn't wait to try their macaroons but when we got to the bakery there were none in sight. However, I can't say I was disappointed due to their amazing selection of pastries. I ordered an almond croissant and Carmel latte, which was extremely delicious. I'm not particularly a fan of almonds but you know it's good when a French woman before you orders the same thing. I love that they make their syrups in house. My Carmel latte was delicious and not too sweet. Everyone is extremely friendly and I will definitely be back.

Wifi & bottomless coffee makes this a great study spot. Perch yourself next to the window and people watch over a nice book. The place is small but the ambience is perfect for someone looking for a sanctuary from Starbucks & Pete's in the Pearl.

Exceptional coffee, great staff, very good pastries, horrible atmosphere. I'd love to give this place 5 stars but their atmosphere is so bad I contemplated only giving them 3 stars. I highly recommend anyone to visit, just advise them to get their order to go.

Super adorable design (minimal, bright, clean). Good almond croissant. Kind of dry sharp cheddar pretzel. Really cool water carafes. Basically, a 3 for the pastries but a 5 for the design so it averages out.
