I must have gone in on an "off day" because the food was mediocre and the service was a bit rude and slow. I cannot speak to the juices.

Being someone who can't tell the difference between Chevron coffee and hand picked beans from Hawaii, I came by this spot for something different. A friend had recommended them as an excellent local juice bar, and I have been back several times to try all of their concoctions. For some reason I tend to get their hang-over helper (I believe it has green apple, carrot, ginger, cucumber, & wheat grass). Other juices include ingredients like yam, beets, and celery. Beyond the juice, the food is one of the best spots in Portland to eat. I have eaten everything from home cooked sausage gumbo to coconut curry soup to bagel sandwiches with sprouts, cream cheese, tomatoes to .... I could go on. Been in a couple times on Friday nights, always a wide variety of musical acts - really appreciate the support of local acoustic sounds across the spectrum. Since I am not a huge 'Yelper', I am finally getting around to this review. Sitting here thirsty for some fresh pressed juice and thought to give a shout out!

Great atmosphere, nice decor and friendly staff. My husband and I came in on a lazy Saturday afternoon and enjoyed smoothies and a fresh chocolate chip cookie. We watched them use the juicer, so we knew our smoothies were fresh. With lots of seating options (small tables, large table, bar, or couches in the back), I could definitely see myself coming back for lunch and/or coffee with friends. A nice find in the neighborhood!

We had a quick and very tasty lunch at Nirvana after attending a meeting in the Weatherly building. It was a nice surprise. The soups were awesome - Coconut Chicken and Herb/Bean. I even took one to go for my next day's lunch. Panini was fresh and the side salad (costs an extra dollar) was good. At first the soup came out a little cold but I asked for a warm up and they did it promptly. It was even better hot. The service was quick and the owner (we assumed) was very cheerful and attentive. We plan on stopping there again after our next meeting.

I work in the same building as Nirvana and it is very convenient that they are in the the area much less just downstairs. I have tried there food, smoothies, coffee and juice bar juices. By far my favorite aspect of the cafe are the juices. You can get all of the other items in the area (sometimes better quality) but a healthy fresh juice is hard to come by. I do wish they would put a bigger variety of juices on the menu and maybe try to fill it less with carrots, but just the fact that I know I'm getting fresh juice is nice!

Great place with tasty soups and smoothies. Delicious fresh made veggie/fruit juices which provide a great healthy snack during day. Also the owner is a really terrific, friendly man who cares a lot about his business and customers.

I LOVE NIRVANA! Their sandwiches, smoothies, and coffee is amazing! I haven't been disappointed with anything I've had here. I also love the vibe here! It's so calming and the music is amazing! Everyone is super friendly and helpful. Best cafe in Portland by far.

The Nirvana Smoothie with spinach is as good as it gets. Coconut, dates, almond milk... amazing!

Very cozy atmosphere, fantastic pastries. Great mochas too! I've only been here a few times but it's a new regular coffee place for me now. I love it.

My wife and I walked here for a very late breakfast at noon o'clock. I ordered a smoothie with a soup and vegan sandwich. She had just a smoothie and a non-dairy cafe au lait. The artwork on the walls is quite pretty, and affordable too! I wish we knew about the interesting layout in the bathroom. Had we known, we would have gone in together and shared a moment similar to "The Love Toilet" from 1990's Saturday Night Live.

I stopped in one recent morning for a mocha and a bite to eat. Good atmosphere, good service, and good stuff. I highly recommend the breakfast panini!

I've been to the Nirvana Cafe twice now - both times I've loved the food and environment. The owner is kind and gracious, and the cafe is a great place to read and socialize. Their smoothies are the best! Get the signature Nirvana smoothie, it's wonderful!!

I stumbled in here after yoga for a truly delightful smoothie (nirvana with spinach). The owner was smiling, gracious, so welcoming. A great place to study or grab a healthy snack...I'll be back!

Love getting a dirty chai here. The owner is really nice, and he cares about the community. This is a drop spot for a charity collecting clothes for poor kids. Comfy chairs. Super-clean. I like this place a lot. Come here about twice a week.

Very nice sandwiches, to-go items, fresh juices, and salads. It's an oasis of peace in the shabby and sometimes off-putting SE industrial area. The friendly owner is a real anchor of the place. The pre-packaged music system is unpleasant. Sometimes the service is slow: I waited 25 minutes once for a salad on the specials board while they got swamped with a multi-to-go order. The staff doesn't seem to have any room to put orders together. However, they were nice about it and it was a rare event, so I'll be back!

I love this place! Greeeeeat sandwiches and the owner is a truly lovely person! I spent many lunches there (used to work around the corner) soaking in every last delightful minute before having to go back to my dreadful job. Some people many complain its too noisy because of the juice maker and whatnot but I think that the bustle makes it even more appealing! And you can't beat fresh juice! Worth a trip. Worth several. In fact go the right now and eat the Mary Mary Quite Cranberry sandwich for me because I want it!

Nirvana is the ultimate café. And I say café, not coffee shop, for a good reason: It's got coffee, yes. It's got espresso too. And a plethora of milk choices I've never seen before (and I'm a coffee snob!) including coconut milk, rice milk, soy milk, and the whole gamut of cow's milk if that's your scene. But what I didn't discover until my second visit is that there's also a juice and smoothie bar, and all the fruit and veggies come from local organic sources. When I last went, on Saturday, the barista had made an early morning foray to the PSU Farmer's Market just to get Oregon strawberries and other goodies. The friendly barista behind the counter sweet-talked me into a coconut latte - which was delightful even though I typically don't like lattes. It was just espresso and coconut milk (not to be confused with its cloying, near-unrecognizable derivative, coconut-flavored syrup, favored by Those Coffee Chains That Will Not Be Named) and it was so tasty I didn't even have to add sugar. I also had the world's most delicious pesto Panini, crispy and gooey with fancy-pants cheese - and sampled my vegan friend's vegan curry, which he wouldn't shut up about. If I lived or worked around SE 12th/Morrison, this would become my neighborhood favorite - as it is I'll be making weekend treks to hang out in the cozy space in the back - giant comfy leather chairs, a couch, board games, a lending library and friendly staff make for the perfect lazy afternoon hangout. Next time I'm going to sample the wheatgrass shots!

This is a really sweet comfortable cafe with great service and really good food and coffee. We're from San Francisco and were on a road trip with two kids. We're used to eating vegetables and fruit that have not been previously frozen and meat that's not fried, so the rest of Oregon and Washington had thus far been pretty painful for us food-wise. We found this place on Yelp as we were approaching Portland and decided to stop because they had salads, sandwiches, soup, and smoothies--something for everyone. Wow. We hit the jackpot. The smoothies are fresh and the paninis are awesome. The beet salad was enormous and delicious. To top it all off we were treated like royalty by the owner, who was helpful in suggesting items, letting the kids taste the soup before ordering (loved it), and bringing us extra goodies after we sat down. It seemed like we had ordered one of everything, but he kept coming over with new tasty creations. We were all completely happy. I would be a regular if I lived here.

I come here often, but this is my first review. I dig the beverages (especially nirvana smoothy) and the staff is super friendly, patient, and informative. The only reason I am not giving 5 stars is because I've noticed just a little something strange. The owner, though super nice, when in shop, the staff seems more tense, less friendly (of the genuine kind) and the overall experience is just a little more uncomfortable. Myself being a business owner I noticed this and even started being present in my place less frequently. Came in today and had another one of those wonderful experiences and everyone was smiling and efficient. The owner is definitely a nice nice man though so don't get me wrong, not a knock on his character at all. Just kinda at ease when absent. :) def recommend this place though. Cheers!

Very friendly folks here, particularly the owner and Joe. Knowledgeable about teas, awesome awsh, tastny hot chocolate, and yummy breakfast cookie. This unassuming and consistent place is my favorite spot for a treat in this area. Must take 1 star off as things could be a leeetle more affordable and some of the counter staff (the ladies in particular) seem to move a little slowly sometimes.

I really wanna give 'em a 5, but I can't...for one unfortunate reason: Really loud "inoffensive" pop is the exact opposite of the concept of nirvana. These folks don't seem to get that. Well, at least in my view. But, if the Beach Boys, and the Monkees--and the worst--Glee covers of Christmas songs, is your idea of nirvana, you're gonna love this place! I, unfortunately, had to find another place to grab lunch. (steps down from soapbox) The people, the coffee and teas, and the food are wonderful and help support the name of the establishment.

What's up with this coffee shop space? It changed three times in the period of two years. It was Grand Jete (which I missed dearly) then it was Parker's (just meh), and now it's Nirvana Cafe. Which was surprising for me considering there aren't that many coffee shops around this area so supposedly they will survive slinging coffees at this spot. So far, I only went once about 9 am and the service was a bit slow. The guy who was the cashier also the barista and he even forgot my Mocha. He wondered why I was still stood there and I said that I was waiting for my Mocha. I also ordered a plain bagel with Sundried Tomatoes. I spent about $5 for my breakfast which was a pretty fair price. The good news is, the Mocha was delicious. It wasn't too sweet and that's how I like it. The bagel with sundried tomatoes was awesome. It wasn't just sundried tomatoes cream cheese, but it's an actual sundried tomatoes with chunks of them on my bagel. I browsed around their board menus while I was waiting and looks like they also serve paninis for lunch and extensive options of smoothies. I hope they will stay in business for a while because compared to previous tenants, Nirvana Cafe serves better options for breakfast, lunch, and solid espresso drinks. Now they just need to remember to make their customers' drinks...I think they will do just fine. :).

I came here to get coffee, meet up with a friend, and hang out for a couple of hours. Here is what i found: Upsides: Nice place, very well kept up. They serve Stumptown coffee. It's a good place to hang out and get stuff done or meet with people. They have a variety of food and drink (some of which is more pricey) The place seems to appeal to 9-5ers who work in the area. Downsides: The music they play is terrible. The person, who I assume is the owner, kept trying to get me to buy food in this weird passive way (in all fairness, I just got a coffee + refill) They also don't give you free refills with your coffee (not the end of the world, but it's an incentive to come back) Also, vegetarian options are rather limited beyond pastries and bowls of oatmeal. Nirvana is a nice place, I'm just not quite sure if it's my cup of tea.

Of all the wonderful cafes & coffee shops in PDX, this is the one I end up at most because it has everything I could possible want in one place: coffee, fresh juice bar (wheatgrass!), kombucha and excellent food!!! The friendly owner and staff are the cherry on top!!!

Clean and very well spaced reading area. I think wi-fi is free. The barista girl who helped me is very nice and patient when I couldn't immediately decide what I want. If you're in the area, definitely check out this little cozy place. The arts on the wall are not only relaxing, but also interesting. The music and ambiance is most definitely for mellowing out and enjoying a good cup of Joe. There is a small bookshelf in there, with actual books in it, not just magazines. Plenty of seating. Choose between modern chairs and comfy leather ones.

When I was in high school (over 10 years ago) I would always hang out at a local coffee shop for hours a week. I can safely say this is my adult version. Ridiculously comfortable chairs that I could fall asleep in, board games, super friendly service, solid artwork for sale, great location, etc etc. Floor to ceiling windows provide tons of light. The juice bar looks tasty, tho I have yet to try it, and the food looks good as well. I'll be coming back here on a regular basis for sure.

Great ambiance, relaxed atmosphere, sincerely friendly staff, and good sandwich options. And being a non-coffee drinker, it's all about the food for me. I ordered today's special, which was a BBQ chicken sandwich. The pulled chicken was moist thanks to the tasty BBQ sauce, and melty cheddar cheese is always a welcome addition. My only two complaints: 1) I was surprised at how small the sandwich was. Both the actual dimensions and the amount of "stuff" on it were disappointing. (Note: I am small and have a small stomach. 99.9% of sandwiches end up being two meals for me. This did not.) 2) I was hoping the sandwich would've been on a ciabatta roll, panini bread, or crusty sub roll. Instead, it was one of those super spongy, sesame seed-topped "hoagie rolls" that are really just oblong generic burger buns. That being said, I work nearby and will be back soon to try another lunch. Probably one of their regularly-offered wraps and some soup. :)

I'll preface this by saying this is not a review of the entire establishment, but of one staff member in particular. I've gone before and had very nice female staff who made me very yummy smoothies. However, I've now gone in twice and gotten an older male staff who doesn't really seem to know what he's doing. The 1st time I got him he made me the worst smoothie I've ever had that was extremely watered down because he put in so many ice cubes that it was too thick to blend so he put in water to thin it out. This wouldn't have been so frustrating if it hadn't taken him 15 minutes to make this nasty smoothie. Then I decided to give Nirvana Cafe another try today but to my chagrin it was the same man working. He made me an americano that he over-filled and proceeded to spill all over the floor. And what was really frustrating was that he put so much water in my oatmeal that it ended up being a watery slush. The man was very nice and I'm sure he's a great person but he's really bad at his job. This has turned me off from every going to Nirvana again in fear that he'll be working.

This place has killer smoothies. While I am not an avid coffee drinker, I do love my smoothies. Their signature Nirvana smoothie might be the best one in town. They always use fresh fruits, nothing packaged or preserved. The owner is a sweetheart and the food is very good, (excellent breakfast sandwiches). Since I found this place I make it a point to regularly go back.

In the city which is dominated with coffees from all over and flavors...this place stands out. Some really great coffees and sandwiches, I just loved this place. Very nice people behind the counter and very friendly too. The "whipped cream over the frapp" here is the musical Friday nights with local talents performing. This is a must go!!!!

Great changes here! I also went when it was Parkers, but was less than impressed. I love the new staff. They are friendly, warm, and welcoming. I've had three good lattes. The food looks pretty good coming out of the kitchen. The atmosphere is comfortable, just what I'm looking for in a local coffee shop.

i stopped in today for the first time. I have to admit that it took some doing to find parking, but it was worth the trouble. I was greeted by the friendly owner who was ready to answer all my questions. My friend had a great sandwich that came with potato salad and a cookie for $6.50. i had a juice that Hussein made up fresh to order. Yum! I loved the comfortable yet contemporary coffee house decor. The classical jazz that was playing just added to the overall ambiance. I will definitely be back.
