I love love love New Thai Blues!! We go in quite frequently for dinner, the Pad Kee Mpi (sp?) is great! The salad rolls are phenomenal!! My bestie always has to ask for more peanut sauce because she just loves it!! The drinks are super yummy!! My favorites are the caprinha (again sp?) and the basil martini!! If Sam is working, ask him just to create something. His drinks are always fabulous!!

Totally disappointed with this Thai restaurant, especially after hearing such great reviews. Worst curry I've ever had (and I've had A LOT of curries.) I ordered the red curry with tofu. It came out cold-warm temperature, so I sent it back to heat up. They clearly microwaved it as none of the food on the plate had moved. Not happy. When I finally did eat it, it was incredibly watered down tasting. No flavor. Almost inedible. Ugh!! The Pad Kee Mao was pretty good, nice and crispy and good flavor, but the bad curry kind of ruined our meal. The waiter wasn't friendly and did not provide good service. Tip: Head down division to 32nd and go to Appethaizing. Amazing Thai food.

The food was very good, he veggies crisp! The spicy basil dish hitting all the right notes. But cleaning the restaurant while I, trying to enjoy lunch is gross.i picture dish and dirt landing in my dish, plus they were squirting disinfectants that had an acrid smell. This should be done BEFORE you open for business. The server was not particularly firendly.

When I first visit a Thai restaurant I always order the pad thai and chicken satay. I was not disappointed at New Thai Blues. The chicken pad thai was perfectly flavored and the chicken satay was even more so. It might be one of my favorite chicken satay dished I've ever had. The staff was friendly and welcoming. Food was delivered quickly. We arrived after the lunch rush so it was empty yet within 10 minutes it was full again. I guess a lot of people were waiting for the lunch rush to end before they arrived. I would patron this restaurant again.

My mother and I were driving around hungry, it was pouring out, and we saw the sign ahead for Thai Food! We stopped in and were the only ones (it was a tiny bit before noon) the server (possibly the owner as well?) was very polite and quickly provided us with menus, water, and then took our order. I had tea and pad khee mao. One of my favorites. My mother had the same. Very straight forward and what I would expect. Delicious and fast. As we were eating many more patrons filed in, almost filling all the booths. I'm not sure if this it normal for their lunch hour but at least one group appeared to be regulars as they new the employee by name and had a "usual". When I have a hankering for Thai in this area again I won't hesitate to come back in!!

Started off with a drink called ginger tears - it was fantastic and fresh with muddled ginger and lemon. I chose to have the mango red curry with shrimp at a heat level of 3 - also fantastic!! Usually Thai places skimp on the protein but I had the perfect amount of nicely sized shrimp AND lots of tasty mango slices. The server was friendly and very helpful! She gave us a copy of the Portland Mercury and offered some good advice on where to eat and drink. Excellent!

I have to update my review. The last two times salad rolls have been poorly made and haven fallen apart. They were difficult to eat. I just go a fork and ate it eat piece by piece. Now this is not a big deal in real life problems, but $5.00 for salad rolls they should be well made. I even let them know that the last time I got them they were difficult to eat. The person who took the order said she would let the cook know, but again they were impossible to eat. I roll better salad rolls and Im Not very good at it.

My guy and I procrastinated Xmas dinner grocery shopping this year and by the time we actually got around to it, every store was closed. Our fault. So we drove around Portland looking for something that was open when we stumbled upon this place. We were so grateful to find something open on Xmas and we were delighted at how delicious the food was! The kitchen was quick but not so quick to make you worry that they maybe just heated stuff up in the microwave. Everything tasted so fresh! Our server was so nice and attentive but I think he may have eventually got a little annoyed at how many times we kept saying, "Thank you!" We even joked about it "If you say 'Thank you' one more time, you're out of here!" And ... "I get it, I get it. We're open on Xmas!" It was lovely. Thank you for being open on Xmas! And thank you for a wonderful meal!

Being vegetarian, finding good food is a must! And Portland has a lot of Thai restaurants. And a lot of bad Thai restaurants. Simply put, this place rocks. We loved the puffy salad rolls, the peanut sauce is perhaps their weakest point, being too sweet in my taste buds but my partner says it's worthy of a sonnet, and the pad thai noodles can bring the house down! My favorite is the Pra Ram, and the outdoor seating in the summer. the service is fantastic and we also like that we can walk over here and leave the car. Very very good, I would highly recommend it.

My friends and I popped in here one weekend night to sate our Thai cravings. Sure glad that we did! The food is just scrumptious and the prices are reasonable. The waiter was super sweet and more than accommodating. If you are in the area, go here. You won't be sorry!

One of my favorite restaurants in Portland. This is a hidden gem in SE. I discovered this place just 3 years ago and have always had great experiences (whether at this SE location or the NE restaurant). Everyone who works here is so nice and provides great service. There is no attitude here either. I love the curry dishes. Try the avocado curry and the pumpkin curry. You won't be disappointed. I have taken my out of town Thai friends here for dinner and they loved their pad Thai dishes.

Another one of the kabillion Thai places in Portland. This one's not bad at all. Pretty solid pad thai and chicken satay. Lunch prices are reasonable. It's not huge and so it can fill up easily at peak hours. Questionable name though. Blues? It can't refer to the music, unless they think John Tesh musak is the blues.

I lived in Thailand for 4 months a few years ago. Thai food is my all time favorite food and I wish I could eat it everyday. That said, New Thai Blues is THE BEST Thai food I've had in Portland. It beats E-San, it beats Sweet Basil. Both of which used to be my Thai food hot spots. Sam, the owner, is super friendly and a great guy. You can tell he's taken great care if crafting his dishes, the ingredients, and his menu to offer only the best. ALL CURRIES are amazing here. My favorites are the Green & Red, but they're awesome. The Pad Kee Mao is my other favorite, and the salad rolls with tofu are excellent. Lunch prices are $7 - $8 and you can't beat that. It's cheaper to go here for lunch than to a chain restaurant like Chipotle or even Laughing Planet.. Which makes it hard to not go here every single day. Take it from a Thai food loving guy like me - go to New Thai Blues, order a draft beer, and have the tastiest Thai meal you've ever had.

Good food, nice decor, friendly attentive service, and a good lunch special. This place is pretty near to my home, so I end up walking here for lunch pretty often. Red curry is great, as is the pumpkin curry. Haven't deviated too much from those items, but my friends have said the dishes they've ordered have been really good, too. Great selection of lunch specials for $7 The place is on the smaller side with 8 booths and a couple of tables, but it's been well decorated. Pretty low key, but classy. And I dig the large curving window. You'll enjoy the food here and it's a good place to come with a couple of friends for lunch or dinner.

Our favorite thai restaurant! Our family has been here 5 times, with consistently fresh and tasty dishes--whether it is a curry or noodle dish. They actually respect vegetables, and don't overcook or smoother them in sauce. My adult son lives in Vancouver, and one guaranteed method of getting him to visit us is offering him lunch at New Thai Blues! We feel very lucky to live just a few blocks away. I also just love the space itself - smallish, clean, with a very aesthetically pleasing curved wall lined with windows, such that each booth is a nice place to sit.

Got the drunken noodles with chicken and a Thai iced tea to-go. The food was flawless and the tea was made perfectly! I have worked for authentic Thai restaurants before, so I know what the food should taste like. This is it!!!! Double yum!!!

Very nice and courteous service. I ordered a pad Thai with chicken to go but truth be told it was incredibly bland in comparison to any Thai dish I have ever had.

I went here a few years ago and wasn't impressed. On the 4th of July this year I went back for some pick-up mostly because they were open. I had my mind blown. I got the appetizer sampler, pumpkin curry and drunken noodles. Both with sea food! Amazing! My only complaint is that I have since went back a few times only to find out that their to go portion is significantly larger than what you get when you sit down. This is mostly confusing but not a big deal. I love take out.

    (4)
  • Michael T.

The service was prompt and the food came out quickly. But the drunken noodles were lacking in flavor, noodles, and overall proportion. I'm used to tom yum cuisine down on Woodstock and 43rd which is one of my all time favorites. I don't see myself coming back and now I feel even guiltier for cheating on tom yum.

If you want something dirt cheap, then look the other way. If you want a calm an warm atmosphere, friendly service, and amazing food, then look no further. Their drunken noodles are fantastic and so is the water.

This Thai restaurant was an undiscovered gem to my partner and I for too long becuase of its somewhat jumbled location and proximity to weird S.E.Division curves. Thankfully one day we decided to go in and try the food on a whim. AWESOME! All the veggies dishes are fresh and crunchy not over cooked and limp. Portions are hearty and filling. The service is excellent, and the atmosphere is almost magical. Love this place.

This is the best thai food I have had in Portland...and I have had a lot! This place has it all: quality food served with a smile. Always flavorful with the perfect amount of spice. When you order veggies you get VEGGIES! I have never seen a place load up their curry with so many delicious, fresh vegetables. In case anyone wants some first try recommendations: green curry, pad kee mao, and salad rolls. MM!!

  • Emelie G.

This is my favorite Thai place in Portland! I've tried a variety of menu items- from their Pad Siew to their curries and rice specials, and I have never been disappointed. They also always have some exciting new mixed drink concoction up on the special board for the drinkers out there. Lunch specials and happy hour is a great value! Plus I love that they make everything gluten free for me. :) Service is always excellent and the guy who's usually there is so friendly and has a great attitude!!! Love New Thai Blues!

hard to believe this place isn't more well known. I've both eaten in and carried out and all experiences have been great. the service is prompt and friendly, quiet atmosphere, and good food. definitely my go-to, even with the multiple Thai restaurants in the area.

The last time I wrote a review for this place was 3 and a half years ago. I was really disappointed this time. My friend ordered the yellow curry with fresh tofu, not fried. I ordered drunken noodle, and we got papaya salad to share. The waiter brought us salad rolls--which we did not order. When we told him we didn't order them, he said that we did. And he became really surly. Weird. So, finally, he takes them away. When my friend's yellow curry came, it had fried tofu. So, we're thinking that when he heard fresh tofu for the curry, he thought we ordered fresh salad rolls with tofu. But, those things don't sound anything alike. He was clearly irritated with us--he never came back to fill our water glasses, he didn't speak to us when we paid. He was mad at US--because he misunderstood our order. And the food was mediocre. Division has a plethora of Thai restaurants--Authentic Thai four blocks from here is excellent. We won't be going back. Too many great restaurants in Portland with nice people in them to put up with pissy service.

I love this Thai place! One of my boyfriend and I's "go-to" places. They infuse their water with lemon slices which makes the water that much more refreshing. Its usually a pretty quiet and calm scene when I've gone in (usually a later lunch time) and staff has always been pleasant. Food is delicious. Love their stir fried spicy basil meal with chicken. So good! And love that you can change the spiciness level of your plate so if you are feeling like having that extra kick you can go up to a 4 or even 5 for that fiery hot taste or tone it down to a 2 or 3 for just that hinted kick of spice. They also have thai iced tea (with coconut milk as an option - yum) which my boyfriend and I love. Totally recommend this place.

My wife and I have been coming here for years and absolutely love it. Sam the owner is the best! He has remembered us and greeted us with a smile since day one. Super warm and hospitable, the food is great and service is always perfect. I've had so many things on the menu and have never ever been disappointed! I really can't recommend New Thai Blues enough, a local, honest and delicious place to support. The real deal folks.

Some of the best Thai I've had in Portland where there's a TON of Thai already. We've tried so many and finally landed on this one, just a few blocks from our house. Good portion-sizes, taste, presentation - all relatively solid.

I love this restaurant! the man I always see there is so nice, he always remembers me and my boyfriend and makes the most amazing drinks! Their pad thai is great but their pad kee mao is THE BEST I'VE HAD! I always bring my friends and family there, absolutely amazing! Lemon Drop martini and tempura pumpkin is where it's at!

I grew up around the corner, and watched a parade of lesser establishments set up shop in this building - but Thai Blue's is the one I'd love to see stay. I stopped for some family dinner, on my brother's recommendation, and was impressed by everything - coconut juice drinks served in a real coconut, an appetizer sampler plate that was a fantastic deal and included delicious food, and a curry bowl that was oh-so-tasty. I snuck samples of my dinnermates' plates and was equally impressed. I'm not sure exactly why Portland seems to be such fertile ground for Thai restaurants, or why a particularly good one always seems to spring up after I've already moved out of the immediate vicinity, but Thai Blue is exemplary, and I'll surely be making a return trip sometime soon.

  • Spencer L.

I'm only surprised that this place isn't busier. The food is excellent. We often get "Red in the Jungle" or Pad Thai. We get take-out and eat there (the latter with friends, usually). The cocktails are interesting and delicious. The service is spot-on: friendly and prompt.

  • Amy P.

Meh. Always wanted to try this place, and have to say - I was disappointed. I walked in to two people standing behind the counter looking at me like I was in the wrong place. When I said I was here for dinner, the man who seemed to be the owner pointed me to a table. I asked if they had Internet and he looked irritated, saying that "I have it for my assistant, but not for you." So, I went to ordering. When my food arrived -pad see ew, it was bland except for an uncomfortable feeling in my mouth, which I now recognize after reading other reviews - it is soaked in salt. Ew!

    (2)
  • Jack R.

Nice lonely location with fantastic service and top of the line Thai food. The happy hour menu has dishes like pad see ew for $6 or under! The cocktails are also mysteriously strong. There are a lot of options in Portland for Thai but this place really won't disappoint

  • Sara M.

I love Thai Blues. I go there once a week practically. They know me by name there. And my two usuals. I love the food and service there. Its always fast, its very reasonably priced, and I always have left overs to eat later.

  • Abbie H.

This has been our go-to Thai spot for a couple of years now. The owner recognizes us and knows to make our food extra spicy, and does not disappoint! I love the eye watering, nose running, spiciness. We frequently get one of the fried rice dishes with beef or chicken, a yellow curry, and/or a pad thai with chicken. The portions are huge and we always have leftovers! The drinks are okay but nothing special, although they are usually pretty strong. The noisy atmosphere is the reason for 4 stars and not 5, but really it is great food and friendly service and it's highly recommended!

    (4)
  • Sarah C.

Thai restaurants are a dime a dozen in Portland, so it's hard for things to really stand out...unless they suck. What I liked about this place...A full bar with good $6 cocktails! I had the Mussaman curry and and my go to noodle dish, Pad se Ew. I requested that they both be extra spicy and neither were not but that was okay because it was extra fresh and the waiter was extra nice. Come to think of it, I've never had a bad Thai server.

Excellent Pad Kee Mao! I highly recommend. Other dishes that are very good are the green curry and the pad thai.

This place should train their wait and kitchen staff a little better. I'm upset because this used to be One Thai which was great. So the waiter took our order, did not write it down... And sure enough got BOTH of our orders wrong! Then instead of Immediately taking it back he asked us if we wanted to eat the dishes, which we politely declined and asked if we could please get the dishes we ordered. So he brought us our food which was mostly ok except my girlfriend ordered sticky rice with her meal which usually comes in a wood basket type thing with a plastic bag inside. This rice came in a wooden basket but without the bag. Needless to say the rice tasted like nasty wood. Had to send that back. We were kind of laughing about it because it was so bad. I would not recommend this for restaurant experience. Food was a decent but Thai noon also on alberta is much better. One Thai used to be my favorite and now its sadly gone along with all their staff :(

  • Nick M.

Well, I don't know. I mean, it's not bad. It's really not, but it doesn't stand out. Doesn't really differentiate itself from the other pretty good Thai places in town. I'm sorry. I don't dislike it, I really don't, it's just, well, you know...

    (3)
  • Lauren B.

The fact that this place is always empty is a travesty. The busiest I've seen it is maybe 2 or 3 other tables. First: It's a buck or two more expensive than some other Thai places, but the portions are HUGE and the food is amazing. Full Disclosure: I'm one of those people who usually goes into a place, figure out one or two things that I like, then stick with those things. Not so at the New Thai Blues. Every time I walk in I try something different and every new thing is always just as awesome as the last thing. Green avocado curry on the special board? Sure, it turned my curry life around from an existence of staunch loyalty to red curry with mangos to a beautiful, enlightened state... but how do they pull off Pad See Ew (perfectly, btw)? They have great spring rolls, but how is the fried shrimp appetizer? The food is so good. If you ask for spicy, they will give you spicy. A lot of Thai places are afraid to do this because it can obscure the flavor, but their cooks execute deadly heat without sacrificing the core of the dish. Try a Basil Mojito if it's on their specials, heck, ask if they'll do it anyway. They obliterate the day's heat and manage to balance being stiff with being refreshing. My only gripe about this place is that it's too far away from home base to go more often.

Saw some great reviews and figured it would be worth driving over for a dinner here. Ordered chicken sate -- it was fine. Ordered salad rolls with shrimp - Very fresh but think they cut up one tiny shrimp in each salad roll and I had so much trouble finding the shrimp that I asked the waiter if they forgot to add them. Peanut sauce was fine . Ordered a Peanut Sauce stir fry dish with chicken - it was okay, not a ton of chicken, vegetable mix was interesting in it, but the flavor was missing some spark. Ordered a duck curry - flavor was really nice but they should have just been honest and called it duck skin curry because there was VERY LITTLE MEAT but plenty of duck skin. Server didn't offer more rice until we were finished and when we said no she accidentally brought it anyway. We would have liked extra during the meal as the amount supplied for two full entree portions seemed a little small. Definitely have had far better rice elsewhere. Husband and daughter had Thai Ice Tea and were both happy. Decor a little oddball but that kind of kept it interesting. Spotted a cobweb hanging on the window we were seated at. Staff were pleasant. Easy parking close to restaurant. All in all, it just wasn't good enough to merit a return visit.

I love this place! We had a terrible experience at another Thai restaurant earlier. So my mother and I tried this one even though it was unfamiliar. We felt relief as we were greeted by a sweet host/waitress, and felt comfortable. The food was soooo good. I ordered the yellow curry with chicken and salad rolls. The flavors, textures, aroma, everything was perfect. I'll be going here for my Thai fix.

    (5)
  • Emilee H.

New Thai Blues has THE BEST salad rolls ever! I have never had better pad thai or green curry chicken and I love that you can choose how spicy you want your dish from a scale of 1 - 5. The waiter was very friendly and knowledgeable. Over all, a great little hole in the wall and I will be back.

  • David J.

I've been to New Thai Blues twice now, so I guess it is time I write a review. I love the curved location (the old Kalga Cafe, for those who have been around for a while), and the food and service have been great on both my visits. The last trip I got a margarita (yes, in a Thai restaurant - it was a 'challenging' day) and even that was well put together. The server on the first trip was friendly and prompt. I got the impression she just works there. The server on the last trip was equally friendly and prompt, but had an extra air of concern about our level of happiness. I gather he has a hand in the business. In both cases, there was nothing to worry about - the food was fresh, hot, and tasty. I echo the sentiments of another reviewer here in saying that the place deserves more business. I think it's proximity to 39th may be a detriment - as 39th and Division is more of an obstacle people try to navigate/avoid, as opposed to a destination. I recommend it - I think you'll like it too.

I live a mere 3 blocks away, but it took me nearly a year before I set foot in this place. WTF was I thinking? In a city that has more Thai restaurants than Glenn Beck has conspiracy theories, New Thai Blues has become my go to place. Their pad see ew is delicious, and I get the craving for their panang curry at the most inopportune times. It's the best I've had in P-town so far, and that's saying a helluva a lot. The owner is extremely personable. Like another reviewer noted, he always recognizes me whenever I call in a takeaway order, and pretty much knows what I'm dying for. I think I've found a new home.

    (4)
  • Liz G.

I love this place. The owner is so kind and personable. Whenever I call to make a to-go order he always knows who I am and calls me by name. I am deathly allergic to peanuts, so for me Thai food can be kind of scary. The owner makes me a special pad thai with cashews! So nice! I feel that giving a restaurant a lousy review because of bad acoustics and the fact that kids were in there is unfair. I love the food, think the service is great, and think the atmosphere is pretty okay....plus the orange makes everyones skin look good. So check it out, and if your allergic to peanuts have Sam make you a cashew Pad Thai and tell him Liz sent you:)

We were quite surprised to walk into what we thought was Kalga's and find a new Thai restaurant. They're so new that they haven't replaced Kalga's signage, though the interior is much more bright and cheerful than Kalaga's was. The service was friendly but not well organized. We were a party of four and our food came out over a prolonged period, presenting us with that awkward "you go ahead and eat, I'll just sit here and look hungry" situation that we dread, and we had one dish brought to the table that wasn't ours. The food wasn't particularly hot when it did arrive. As for the food itself, my Tom Kha (coconut soup) was very tasty, but every other dish we had was very sweet and too salty. Overall, I'd say "disappointing." We have lots of Thai restaurants in town so there's really no need for a mediocre one. Perhaps things will improve after they have been open for a while.

I really liked this place. I've been twice and both times the food and flavor were great! Nice blend of heat and spice where you could still taste the distinct flavors, not just the same chili spice which, in my opinion, can make every dish taste the same. I had tofu as my protein and it was done beautifully, not dry, but not soggy. Staff were friendly and non-assuming. Nice break from the sometimes elitist Division food scene. Not sure why Blues is in the name, don't go looking for a themed atmosphere, but the food is great and the setting relaxed!

If you need some spicy thai goodness in the division area of se portlandia this place is super bomb. The guy who runs the show is really nice and remembers my name and stuff. The curries are most tasteful and you can get a side of steamed broccoli for like two bucks. Two chopsticks up!

  • Eliza Jane H.

Great Thai Food. Salad rolls came with chicken, which is rare and they were huge and delicious. I ordered a stir fry shrimp, basil fried rice, and a green curry all three dishes were good. I was happy with the portions and the price. You can't really go wrong with this place.

    (4)
  • Emily F.

Oh man, so good. The red curry with a 4/5 spiciness almost killed me. In a good way. Service is great, atmosphere is nice, spring rolls were insane. Also the only Thai place we could find open at 11 a.m. on a Monday. What more could you want?

    (5)
  • Willow W.

Wow, I'm surprised at the low stars. I got take-out here, two curries, and I loved it. They were both loaded with fresh vegetables, and still had ample meat/tofu. Red curry had perfectly green beans, tender eggplant, onions, and peppers. The pumpkin curry had lovely chunks of pumpkin (kabocha) with other vegetables as well. The spice level was pretty good, and although I ordered two similar curries by accident, they were both fabulous and different enough to notice. The person who helped me was kind and friendly, the atmosphere very inviting, and I would not hesitate ot go there for dine-in instead of take-out, at which point if I still love it as much, I might add a star. Maybe they are still young and working on consistency. Let's give this place a chance for what it is, not for what it replaced.

My friends and I decided around SE 74th and Division that we wanted Thai food. Now. We started driving and this was the first Thai restaurant we saw so we decided that even though we did not understand the name, we would try it out. Sometimes being spontaneous pays off! My PadKeeMow was steaming hot and loaded with yummy vegtables and generous portions of beef. The veggies were just done to crispy perfection, but the beef was a bit on the chewy side. It had good, strong flavor but next time I am going to try a 4 on the spicy-scale because the 3 barely registered for me. I snuck a taste of my sisters Chicken Pad Thai and the chicken was still quite juicy and the noodles were refreshingly un-Ketchupy, Best of all we the lunch special ($6-$7) is a very generous portion-- the waiter actually said, "I was getting ready to bring you girls boxes... how did you eat all that?" Oh ye of little faith :) The decor of the restaurant was a fun combination of eclectic SE Portland and traditional Thai styles. It's fairly clean save for a few mysterious things scattered about on the floor; the bathroom also had some room for improvement and was INEXPLICABLY cold. Also, it is just me or does Brian McKnight frequent a lot of Thai restaurants in the Portland area? Maybe the name of this restaurant has something to do with the slow jamz they play all day? Overall it was a satisfying Thai experience. Not the best I've ever had, but if I ever find myself in SE with a raging craving for a huge plate of cheap Thai food-- and some seriously powerful air conditioning-- I know where to go.

Totally D-E-A-D on a weekend night, I thought to myself walking in, huh, something has changed. Turns out, it's the prices. They are higher now, and the bargain tasty dishes, now don't seem quite worth it. The service was impeccable as per usual, but the seafood we added to the curry, amounted to two small shrimp.

Hmm, it's just very much a 3 stars kind of place. The food wasn't bad nor was it especially good. I like the orange walls! They do all of the common Thai dishes fairly well! But really this place just falls into a category of somewhat "meh" Thai food with many other places in Portland. There are just so many places that do all of these dishes, that you've got to either be really good at making them, or have something unique and different on the menu to really stand out.

As a frequent Thai food eater, I have been able to cut through the facade of a new spot, and get to the heart of the matter. How do their curries measure up, how's the papaya salad, what's the spiciness factor, how does it measure up? On all of these accounts, New Thai Blue's is.....pretty weak. Their location couldn't be more convenient. A mere two blocks from my house. Believe me, I WANT to like or even love this place. But now having eaten their food on three occasions, I've gotta put my two sense in. It's a pass. The manager/owner is pretty nice, but he seems to be the only person manning the scene, which is usually pretty sparse. The food takes a bit longer than it should, and while presented fairly well, it just.....droops. I've never been able to use this phrase with any literal meaning, but they have 'weak sauce'. Flavors fall flat, the fish sauce is lame, and the veggies are boring. In a city with GREAT Thai options, the weak places need to be skipped over. Sorry, New Thai Blue's, I won't be coming back anytime soon. Even if you are 150 feet from my doorstep.

Right off let me say that the food was actually pretty good. I had the Musaman curry and my partner had the pad thai. Both were quite tasty, as were the little egg rolls we had as an appetizer. The service was fine, too. The 3 stars comes from the terrible, awful, horrible acoustics. I spent the entire meal straining to hear my partner speaking in a normal tone of voice. Every scrape of a chair, sizzle of the grill, and clang of a plate was amplified by about a million, and it ended up being cacophonous. Add to that NO LESS than 12 children running around, tearing up the plants, lying on the tables, shouting and playing, and boy oh boy, I couldn't wait to get out of there. The prices were good, though. I'd return here for take-out only, but we won't be back for sit-down service.

It wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't such a FAR cry from the restaurant that used to be there. Maybe it's not very fair, but the food was mediocre. We went there last night to check it out and see if the new place was anything like the old, and we were really disappointed to discover the only thing that was the same was the building. The drinks (a thai iced tea and a "Captain&Coke")were good, the appetizer combo sampler was mostly burnt-ish and would be "okay" even in a bar setting. We weren't hungry enough (and a little too disheartened) to try any of their entrees, but I can say I'm a peanut sauce fan and their peanut sauce was delicious. The atmosphere is kinda cool considering they were bold with the color palette, but it's sparse and unromantic. The soul is just gone from what used to be a really fantastic place.

We went here late on a Friday night and were pleasantly surprised, both a- that they were open and b-how delish the food was. We tried our hand at the Pad Thai with salmon and Mango curry, two specials that sounded like they could be contenders for a bit more rare Thai combos. The food was made ON THE SPOT, meaning we could hear the lady cutting up veggies and stir frying the deliciousness feet away from our table. Then in no time at all we were thrilled to be served, by the very kind and attentive waiter/owner?, a beautiful array of food. The portions were way too big to finish, but we walked away with big smiles and full bellies and will certainly be back. This was a pleasant Thai food surprise in a city with lots of hot and cold Thai spots!

We went here today for the first time. I give you an extra star for being open during the winter snowstorm, but I doubt I'd go back if I had another choice. The tom kha soup (which they can make vegetarian) was quite good. I was thinking about Mark H's review and thinking that he rated them too low. Then the green curry came out. Almost five hours later my mouth is still dry from the sodium a-SALT (haha, I'm so funny) it suffered through. I simply couldn't finish my meal because it was getting painful. More than just over salted, it wasn't thick enough. The curry was closer to soup than well, curry. The service was fine. Nothing great, but the food got there in an acceptable time. The coconut rice was pretty good. The ambiance was nice too. The kids meal looked good. Still, the SALT. Ugh.

Sam is one of the most welcoming people in Portland. The food is good, although the selection seems a little light. I notice in other Thai spots, the menu can be a book, but anything on the menu here is bound to be tasty. My wife judges Thai restaurants by the Pad Kee Mao and New Thai Blues does it well. I am a wimp when it comes to heat, but they are able to tone down the spicy without sacrificing flavor. All I can say is, "Yum"!

Coming from the SF area to SE Portland I was worried I may not find decent, cheap Thai. I tried one other place when I first got here and they were alright (I reviewed them too) but it was the same ol impersonal experience I usually get in SF where there are about a bajillion Thai joints. However, when I called in an order to Thai Blues I was greeted by a sweet man with a Thai accent (usually a good sign) who helped me order what I wanted. I didn't even have a menu in front of me and I was calling in mid-afternoon for an order I wanted picked up literally at closing (10p). He basically said, tell me what you like and I'll make it. Come 10p not only was there no problem picking up the order as they were closing but they got everything right with the perfect level of spice (I ordered a spicy and a medium spicy to try out their idea of what spicy actually means). I was so NOT disappointed! I enjoyed it so much I ate till I couldn't take another bite. It's not the best Thai food I've ever had but it's fantastic for price, location and service. I'm definitely going back (maybe this time to actually dine inside!!) PS I ordered Thai tea with my meal and had to drive to where I was eating before trying it out. They gave us a carrier for the 2 drinks and they must have just filled the cups because they weren't watered down in the least when I finally got to sip on it!! Great move!

New Thai Blues has been a favorite of mine for the past 2 years. The owner Sam is awesome and gives friendly and efficient service. He uses organic veggies and the meat is always good, not creepy like a lot of thai places. The atmosphere is nice, clean and relaxing. They definitely have THE BEST SALAD ROLLS in Portland!!! Good good good!

My experience at New Thai Blues was so bad as to be comical. They had obviously underestimated how many people would want to eat out on Jan. 1st, and were understaffed. We had to wait for 20 minutes even though tables opened up, because the one waiter was so busy. That was forgivable, but it all went downhill from there. We were eventually brought water and menus, and ordered our food. Then we waited and waited as the waiter rushed around taking to-go orders and the cooks took long mysterious breaks from actual cooking. After about 45 minutes I asked when our appetizers would be ready. We got them shortly after. The vegetarian tempura was good, but we got chicken pot stickers instead of the vegetarian ones we ordered. About 10-15 minutes later we finally got our main courses. The two pad thais were fine, although the waiter mixed up which was the spicy one and which was mild. The tofu was literally rancid and inedible. The "peanut sauce lover's" dish was more coconut milk than peanut, and just tasted like sugary meat. I received white rice after ordering brown, and never got my green tea. We left very unhappy, and got stomach aches. This was my worse restaurant experience EVER.

I tried New Thai Blues because it is right between where I live and where I work, and I am so glad I did! The food is delicious, large in portion, and really reasonably priced. Sam, the owner, is friendly and helpful. By my third time back, he remembered my name! A friend and I have become semi-regulars (can't help it!) whenever we are in the mood for Thai. Our favorite dishes: Peanut Lovers with tofu or chicken and the Chicken sate.

I don't really understand all the bad reviews. New Thai Blues has good food....it may not be super authentic but none of the Thai restaurants in Portland are (other than maybe Pok Pok, but who want's to wait an hour every time they have a craving for Thai food). As far as American Thai food goes- New Thai Blues is as good or better than the rest of them. They're not afraid to make it spicy if you ask and the employees and owners are very nice. The ambiance beats most of the other Thai restaurants in the neighborhood as well.

Friendly, fast service matters & New Thai Blues does it well. Portions are standard, as are the prices. I'm on the hunt for the best Pad Kee Mao in the city, and while their version was tasty and well-flavored spice-wise, it did not actually taste like Pad Kee Mao. I might try another dish in the future.

This place always seems pretty slow which I think is odd. Nice, clean, well decorated place. Average prices & serving sizes. Nice beer selection for a Thai place. Service is excellent, very friendly. Highly recommend.

This is a tough one to review for a number of reasons...the first is because I liked the cuisine...it was fresh, tasted good and was a nice size serving. So whats my problem, you are probably asking....well, quite honestly, I expected more. with a name like New Thai Blues I somehow had visions of Muddy Waters mixed with Mick Taylor going to Bangkok but what we got was Kenny G wailing away on an old CD (true story, Kenny and his wailing clarinet played for the entire meal), amidst an ordinary backdrop of uncreative interior decorating (classic jar of old peppermints stationed next to the toothpicks and cash register)add to this a relatively ordinary menu....and well what I felt was disappointment...yes, I said the food was good and it is but it lacks the punch, the pow, the shazam that many of us have come to expect in the wonderful world of Portland Dining. Perhaps I'm jaded and maybe if I was in the middle of the Ozarks (nothing wrong with the Ozarks~been there and liked it) and I was pining away for some Pad Thai then New Thai Blues would have been great but like everything in life, it is quite simply relative to its surroundings. I enjoyed the Fried Basil Chicken Curry and my daughter enjoyed the Pad Thai...both dishes were nice and my curry had a great deal of flavour. The service was good and the prices reasonable but in Portland do we really need to settle for ordinary when other restaurants are pushing the boundaries of atmosphere, dining and creative cuisine? I for one think not and we should not settle, at least not in Portland. So go there and be impressed with good service, an average menu and ordianry fare but do next expect anything beyond that...to paraphrase a Muddy Waters song title "I Ain't Satisfied"~ (with New Thai Blues).

After moving to a new part of town, we were afraid that we'd never find a good Thai restaurant again. We were wrong. Food was fantastic! Prices were reasonable and they folks were very friendly.

I don't know what earlier reviews were all about, seriously...why would you review a place when they just opened? This place is great! I will come back again and again.

In a town where good Thai is a stones throw away I think New Thai Blue survives simply because those of us in this neighborhood are lazy.

I love this place and really dont understand the low ratings at all. The vegetarian dishes I have had are always fresh and delicious. The owners are so nice and attentive. This is a wonderful local business, give them a try!

This is the best Thai food I have had in Portland yet. The recipes are unique, well prepared, and very generous in size, enough to take home for tomorrow's lunch. The staff is professional and attentive, the ambience homey. If I take the time to write a review, it's because I feel a place is really special. Hope you'll give it a try.

We walked in around 9:45 and I guess they close at 10. The place was completely empty but they were very welcoming to us and invited us to sit anywhere. We definitely didn't get the walked in just before closing, get the hell out of here treatment. In fact, when our waitress brought the check, she made sure to say, no hurry on that. Very, very nice service. The food: We got the fried veggie rolls which were unremarkable but not bad. We went for the classics on entrees- Pad Thai and yellow curry. The Pad Thai was remarkably good and huge. Like 2 left over dinners huge. Veggies were fresh and tofu was done just right. The yellow curry was thick and very tasty. It's rare to get yellow curry that has that nice gravy thickness that is so, so good. they have that here. we've only found it in this town at Baan Thai, so it was great to find a place that had the same nice curry consistency. The spice: We ordered a 4 and a 5 out of 5 on the hot scale and got a 1 for each. We let our waitress know that we were disappointed in the level of spice and she advised us to order Thai spicy next time and they would knock our socks off. We'll remember that because we will be coming back.

My husband and I, and another couple went to Thai Blue a few weeks ago. The wife of the other couple is Thai. She recommended the restaurant and ordered for us. The food was excellent. We're going again for Valentine's Day!
