I appreciated the other diners and the general vibe. Bummed that I waited an hour for 2 raw sushi rolls with no explanation for why it took so long. Two diners next to me ordered after me and both got their meals before mine. I thought the sushi was nice. Ok for the price. Bummed at how this stop turned out. Everyone else seemed happy with their dining experience

We swung by this place on a Saturday night when we were craving sushi after a movie and saw the great reviews, so we thought we'd give it a shot. We walked in around 9pm and the place was empty. I always feel a little awkward dining late if no one else is around - I don't want to hold anybody up. I asked what time they closed (10pm) and if they were closing, it was no big deal. They somewhat hesitantly invited us to sit down. I felt very uncomfortable - especially when I heard the waitress muttering to the sushi chef with obvious disdain we were there. Minus lots of points for bad service. At that point we'd already sat down and it was weird either way, so we decided to just try to eat quick. We ordered some sake to share (which we had to send back to heat up because it was barely luke warm). Now, the sushi was pretty good. We got a few rolls and all of them were pretty tasty - not the best I've ever had but for the price, certainly decent. The silverware and overall ambiance is not very nice. The sushi is decent. Out waitress was terrible but our sushi chef was very nice and we appreciated that. Overall, I probably won't go back, but if you're looking for quick, reasonably priced, no-frill sushi, give it a whirl.

Interesting, delicious place. Okay, so my husband and I first went here because it seemed like such an absurd place for a sushi joint. But this sushi is legit. The mojo bomb and baked salmon roll (sweet, warm honey in your mouth) is to die for. And the Philadelphia roll is smokey and delicious. We've been back multiple times since our first trip in. The gentleman who makes the sushi is friendly and definitely knows his stuff (heard from a fellow patron he used to make sushi in LA on movie sets or something?). Wherever he was trained, he sure learned the basics and added some flair. Sure, the environment is weird (TV's in some of the booths, the video poker blaring from Daddy Mojo's Cafe next door), but the friendly service and yummy rolls definitely keep up going back.

I'll agree with the other reviewers, this place is charming in a weird tv-on-the-table and sushi-in-a-bar kind of a way ... But that's what gives it character. Obviously not a fancy date night locale, but Mojo's sushi chef serves a dang good meal. We tested out the California, Hawaiian, tofu, and Philadelphia rolls and all were on point. My only qualm is that it did take a bit to get our food because there is only one sushi chef, but every time a roll was ready, he sent it out. Tips: happy hour between 4-6pm // bar happy hour 4-close (great deals on this menu!) We haven't tried the main Mojo's yet, but they literally have everything on the menu: Asian, American, creole, seafood, and breakfast until 4pm?! Kind of a mishmash, but this place is a gem!

If I would have heard "dive sushi" in the past, I would have expected something awful, but surprisingly, this is a solid dive sushi bar. Prices are on par with the experience. If you're ordering a $5 roll, your expectations should be aligned with what you're spending. My wife and I were looking for a place to watch the World Series while spending the weekend in Portland. We also wanted sushi. This place worked out perfectly.

I wanted to check this place out, because.. What? Sushi at Daddy Mojos? I mean Daddy Mojo's is wacky enough already, but to throw a sushi bar in the mix? ...What? Well anyway I wasn't expecting anything amazing but it turned out the sushi was actually really good. We ordered a number of things and they were all great, except for one called the "pizza roll", though partly because it wasn't what I was expecting. I wanted to try something 'weird', but all the same, if I had read the description more carefully I probably wouldn't have ordered it. So, certainly my own fault. My only disappointment was that I had expected cheap prices, based on the Daddy Mojo's affiliation. That's not to say it is expensive -- it is cheaper than Zilla down the street.. Basically I would say the quality and prices are about on par with a place like Mio Sushi, but with an atmosphere and service that is somewhat less corporate/sterile feeling. There was just one dude waiting tables AND making the sushi, and a kid running around. Very relaxed. I will most likely be back for more.

Not your garden variety sushi joint. In fact, it's kind of easy to call this a sushi dive. Seriously, they had none of the fancy sushi chain, black painted ceramic yackity yackity, with cool bowls, and silly waving cats. It was all just diner bowls, simple plates, and freaking delicious sushi! The whole menu had pretty fair prices with a guy (almost just a dude) who cuts and serves good, fresh, tasty sushi. There was no overdressed, puffed shirt with a razor sharp $2000 laser sharpened blade and a faux bamboo Japanese garden for a background. If there were a Ronin, who refused to die for his master, and chose to serve excellent sushi, in a small diner, he would probably work here. Great sushi, good beer, decent pricing, who cares what the booth looks like. Although the door was blocked by a bums recycling carts when we arrived. C'est la vive.

Oh hell yes! I have driven past this place a million times in the way home and finally found myself in the rare spot of eating dinner alone and therefore being able to do whatever I want without having the influence of outside opinion! As had already been stated, this place is attached to a dive bar. Eating sushi and then rolling into the bar to get tossed is so brilliant! Like a good Chinese restaurant/lounge combo, but Japanese. My table had its own tv, so I could watch Monday Night Football. Enormous bonus perk! Oh, the sushi was top notch! I wish there were a larger nigiri select, but the fish I did have was great! The rolls were inventive and balanced in flavor. I know I'm eating damn fine sushi when I don't even touch the wasabi! Also...Mojo Bomb! Deep fried, spicy tuna stuffed jalapeno! Love at first bite! Very friendly and attentive staff! Passable coffee. Go now!

I drove by this place a few times before stopping in, but I was immediately curious since it does not look like your typical sushi place but more funky and colorful. So I stopped by to try the sushi on a whim and discovered that it's attached to a dive bar and you can also get beer and bar food (the only other place that I know of with this questionable combination is Miyamoto's attached to Romtom's on Stark). Normally I'd want a sushi place to feel cleaner than this place felt, but it seemed clean behind the sushi bar, which is what matters. The sushi chef was very outgoing and friendly, and if I'd started talking to him sooner I might have eaten the sushi there instead of taking it to go for fear of being bored eating alone. Generally the service was good and they seemed like really nice people. Now for the important part: the sushi. It was surprisingly good, excellent even. I actually worked for a while as a sushi chef under a sushi master from Japan who was very particular about quality, so when I go out to sushi I keep an eye out for the details: how loosely or tightly packed the rice is, the balance of fish and rice, the shape and consistency of the rice ball for nigiri, and so on. When I got home I was prepared to like the sushi because I liked the people, but it was still remarkably delicious and I wished I'd ordered more. In sum, this is a truly odd location but surprisingly excellent sushi. I hope to be back with a group of friends and check out the dive bar after dinner. It'd also be a good place to go with a mixed group of sushi fans and non-sushi eaters.

The place wasn't horrible, but it was definitely a hole in the wall. Hole in the wall restaurants are great when they are thai...or mexican...or chinese...but not sushi. If you get what you pay for, then I don't want to pay for cheap sushi. If you like to watch television while you eat, this is the perfect place to go. Not only is it attached to a dive bar playing whatever current sport is on, there is one table on the sushi side of the establishment that has a television ON the table...and you can choose to watch whatever you want! Weird.

Had delicious sushi at a great price. The service was very attentive. The restaurant is right next to a bar. (nice concept) very relaxed atmosphere. You can catch a soccer game and snack on some sushi. I enjoyed the jalapeno sushi it had a kick but it was good.

I didn't check on Yelp before I went to Mojo Sushi for the very first time. So I was shocked when I came back here to give a good review how other Americans are giving bad reviews for their sushi. I am from Japan, and I like their sushi just fine. This place is so perfect for us. I can eat good fresh sushi while my kids want to have American food. Their seaweed salad is great, miso soup was great (good fish stock, taste much better than what I make at home,) tuna tower sushi was pretty and delicious, so I disagree with most of bad reviews here. Mojo has so many varieties of multi-cultural dishes on their menu, so it's perfect for mixed racial/cultural family like mine. :) Their sushi is "fresh" and I love them. My kids have been here more than I have with their friends, and they love their food and services. Owners are wonderful people (Japanese wife! Such a plus for me! No wonder they serve good Japanese food!) The style they serve won't intimidate Americans who can't use chopsticks to have soup. They serve in a American soup dish. I thought it was a kind gesture of the owners. I finally found the spot for my sushi cravings in Portland where I can go casually and anytime alone or with people! They have TV screens on some tables and I can't wait to enjoy world cup soccer from there. Yay to Mojo sushi!

We just moved to NE from NW and didn't know where to get sushi but we drive by everyday on our way home. From the outside it doesn't look like a place that you would want to go and get sushi. Even when you go inside the decor is not what you would expect ... but the sushi is great. They even have a happy bar menu and a dive bar next door where you can order drinks and other items off their menu. The sushi chef is very nice and it's great for kids. Very casual and there are even TVs in a couple of booths for those times when you just want a little break from the kiddos :)
