I'm not a Sushi snob, but I am a little bit of a cheap skate (when it comes to getting a bite to eat on my lunch hour) so I usually don't expect a whole lot from the typical take-out sushi places which dot the area. That said, Mizu Sushi was a breath of fresh air. I stopped in for lunch to check out this new Sushi Bar and found Sushi that was very fresh (a big plus!), tasty, and priced reasonably. When I walked into Mizu, I found a tiny restaurant which was decidedly "hip" in decor, so I was kind of expecting the typical "fancy decor, expensive & disappointing sushi" experience which is all too common here in Portland. This was not to be the case. Read on to see why... Taste: I ordered a spicy tuna and a Mizu roll. The Mizu roll was delish, but I should have had the Chef put more spicy sauce on the tuna. (my fault - she actually asked me if I wanted more, but being my first time at Mizu, I thought I would play it safe and keep them "not too spicy". Next time I'll know better). Side note: my sushi came with low-sodium soy sauce which I greatly prefer (not all Sushi places offer low-sodium soy sauce). I'm sure you can get "regular" soy sauce if you prefer. Portions: I'm a pretty big eater, but found out, to my surprise, that I ordered too much! One order would have been enough, but my eyes tend to get bigger than my stomach when it comes to Sushi. Ambiance: I decided to eat my meal outside on the pleasant little covered area on the side walk and people watch as I munched. Mizu is small, and the only inside seating is a short little counter with barely enough room for two, but the day was warm, the sun was out, and the outside seating (two patio tables with chairs) was inviting. Nice. =) Ordering for more than one: After my meal, I decided to be a little daring and order a party platter to take home to the wife and kids. I asked for it to be ready at 5:00 so I could pick it up. When I came by to pick it up, I was again pleasantly surprised - the platter was huge! Once again, I had over-ordered. (doh!) I took it home and we (the 4 of us) were unable to finish it off (yes, there is such a thing as too much good sushi). Side note: the platter came on a thick, sturdy platter with cover, not those cheap, thin, "gonna fall apart if you lift it wrong" platters you get from other places or supermarkets. Summary: Pros: Good Sushi, made to order, quick, reasonable prices, Cons: Being primarily a take-out place, it's tiny, so there's not much seating. Overall: I wanted to give Mizu 4.5 stars, but since the rating system only allows "whole" stars, I rounded up to 5 stars. All in all, a great place for lunch (and the occasional dinner). I will definitely be back.

I really, really wanted to like this place. The staff was nice and courteous, the restaurant was cute, and I liked that they made the rolls fresh to order. But you have to judge a restaurant by it's food, and it was... it was bad. I got an avocado roll and edamame. The rice was not even rice anymore, it was a chewy paste and to top it off the avocado was under ripe. The edamame must have been frozen, or overcooked, or just cursed. It was stringy and bland. I've never had it taste like that before, I didn't even know it could. I'd like to give it a second chance, but I don't want to risk throwing my money away.

This is the closest sushi place to my office. (Relocated in Sept. '13). This is a tiny spot, but the service is great. Its run by a mother/daughter team and you can tell in one visit that their hardworking and care about their business/customers. Their is not a large selection on the menu, but I've been VERY impressed with the quality and freshness of the fish. They also are very happy to do a substitution or change without hassle or a charge (this guy hates Salmon). For the Vegetarians out there, one look at the menu shows a much larger selection of options for you than I've ever seen at much large sushi places. There are only a few seats inside, so it really caters to the grab and go crowd in the area. However, I've never had a problem taking a seat and eating my meal in peace instead of at my desk.

Thought I would give this place one more chance. I called in my order and was told 15 minutes and my order would be ready. I got there about 15 minutes later and was told they didn't start my order yet then she said oh no I gave it to someone else. This place has the worst service and the sushi is a hit and miss. Extremely disappointed and will not be returning.

Owner's are super friendly and make some of the best looking and tasting sushi in town. Definitely this place is a go-to spot if you're looking for sushi to eat while you work through lunch. We ordered the chirashi , Mizu roll, shrimp tempura roll, and avocado veggie roll. I'm really particular about the sushi rice and Mizu's sushi rice was the right temperature (room temp) and just the right combination of subtle sweetness with a touch of vinegar. Pretty much perfect sushi rice. Everything we ordered was fantastic. I had the chirashi bowl all to myself. If you don't know what chirashi is: sashimi over sushi rice in a bowl with topiko, furikake and shaved bonito to season. The sashimi slices were very generous and fresh (I got hamachi or yellow tail, maguro or tuna, and red snapper). Pretty much perfect chirashi. Prices are reasonable. The menu covers the basics and has a few extras that are worthwhile.

I thought I would give this a try as it was quick and had good reviews here. Fish quality was poor and tasted too fishy for sushi. Service was great, but the food quality was poor and just not worth the great price. Then again, inexpensive sushi is usually not very good. Mizu is in this category. IICCCCCKKKKKK Don't do it!!!!

I definitely have to write an update - a craving for sushi struck the last few days and I've stopped in a couple times. I wanted to give an extra star and kudos for the last couple of experiences I've had. The service is always great, all of the ladies working there are super sweet and welcoming. The wait time has also picked up the pace quite a bit. 10 minutes at the most and I'm out. I appreciate that, because I've had some pretty considerable waits. Also, the fish has been really fresh and delicious. That's a huge one. Consistency has really improved and I'm happy to give them my business on a more regular basis.

I love this little place!!! the menu is not huge however the woman has no problem doing substitutions and will do half orders. I got half an order of one and half an order of another. The fish was high quality and was simply some of the best fast sushi I have ever had. The place only has a few seats and so I take my order to go. I could not be more pleased as I ate it

I just finished the daily special with spicy tuna roll, salmon maki, and two pieces of nagiri for $8.50. First of all, something like this would cost $15.00 in NYC, so this is a damn good deal. Second, I've had plenty of sushi in my day, and while I'm no connoisseur, I know bad sushi when I taste it. This is not bad sushi. The rice is not stale or too mushy. The fish is fresh. And most of all, the service is charming and warm. The lady behind the counter made my order immediately (though it was 2:00 and the shop was empty), and she was so nice. I work a couple blocks away, and I'll definitely be back for more.

Located in a difficult to find section of a non-descript office building, Mizu Sushi is a tiny restaurant with around four seats, operated by two ladies. The sushi is nothing special, but for a cheap place to grab lunch and bring it back to the office, Mizu Sushi offers quite fresh sushi at quite a reasonable price. I came here seeking to finally complete my Sushi Sensei badge, and tried a couple rolls. The Mizu Sushi Roll has a bit of yellow tail and salmon, as well as asparagus (which was intriguing), while the spicy salmon roll was on-point, albeit with a bit too much cucumber for my liking. In all, the sushi was really down the middle average, but the price is quite reasonable, and if you like the intimate atmosphere that a tiny restaurant brings, then by all means, I would check this place out. Lastly, this is very much a lunch location. I came around 6:30, and the lady there was already packing up, and very ready to go home.

If you want quality, simple sushi that won't break the bank, I highly recommend Mizu. There's nothing fancy about their rolls, but the sweet owner/chef gives great portions at very reasonable prices for how fresh the fish tastes. I love getting seaweed salad (they serve up the standard style, which I like) and a spicy roll and some salmon nigiri. My guy and I are easily stuffed for $30, which for fresh sushi is a steal. I have yet to find a sushi go-round that I can stomach, so Mizu is my affordable alternative when the occasion doesn't call for all-out Murata down the street.

My sister-in-law and I went to this place for lunch yesterday on 11/18/13 around 1300 hours and we had the special number (A). Later that day around 6:30 PM I got a mean case of food poisoning and was throwing up. I spoke with my sister-in-law today and she also was throwing up. I'm not sure if I will ever go back to this place again. I just wanted to warn the rest of you that eat here on 11/18/2013 and you got sick, that's probably why. :-(

Went with the daily special "A' today, there was another one but wasn't interested. The daily special I had included 4 pieces of spicy tuna roll, 4 pieces of crunchy California roll, and 2 nigiri (mackerel and salmon). The fish is fresh and the rolls were delicious. I'm not a big California roll fan because it's pretty boring, but the crunchy fried onions they put on top made it good. The nigiri are big pieces and fresh. The only reason why I didn't give it a 5 star is because the rice was a little soft for me. There are 5 tables outside with a single seat-- loved it because I had my own table and privacy. My order came out quickly and had friendly service. Will definitely be back and ordering the nigiri since most of them are $3.50 for two pieces. That's a steal. I love having sushi for lunch because it's not greasy.

Delicious. Quick service and very nice customer service skills. The good was good and the ambiance is nice for a late lunch.

I've given this place 3 shots. That in itself is telling, since 1) I LOVE sushi and 2) This place is literally in my building. I just have to go downstairs, and I'm there. So, if I love sushi and there's a sushi place so conveniently located practically in my home, why have I only come here 3 times? It just isn't that good! It really breaks my heart to say that, because I truly want to like -- no, LOVE -- this adorable tiny sushi joint. It looks promising; the logo design, the website design, the minimal decor in this teeny shop, the two tiny patio tables right outside the door, the very sweet lady behind the counter, the daily specials. Every time I try this place I tell myself this will be the day I LOVE it, but it never happens. I always walk away thinking, huh, that was mediocre. Actually, today, I ordered one of the daily special options, which (as far as I've noticed) always includes 4 pc California roll (imitation crab, of course). I normally stay away from California rolls because they're boring and I'd rather eat real crab anyway. But, today I just wanted a little bit of a few things. Well, I'm disappointed to say that the California Roll was actually my favorite of the selection (there was also a Spicy Tuna roll and 1 pc each tuna and snapper nigiri). Spicy tuna was just generic sriracha-flavored mush, and the 2 pieces of nigiri weren't BAD -- just soooo underwhelming. The rice didn't taste fresh, but sorta stale. Verdict: after 3 tries and being unimpressed every time, I guess I'd still totally stop in here just for a California Roll when it's really convenient and I don't want to leave my house. This place just charms me! Otherwise this would easily be a 2 star review. Since most people reading this review don't live where I live, I don't really see a compelling reason to tell you guys to eat here. Sorry!

Decent. The sushi isn't bad, but it isn't great either. I may go there again just because it's convenient and it's reasonably priced. The rice is very mushy and freshness of the fish is just mediocre. I think this little shop is run by a mother and daughter who both are really nice.

This is a pretty good spot. Its not much of a place to sit down and eat anything but great to grab some good sushi on the go. While I usually enjoy sitting down for my sushi meals this place is extremely convenient (being right across the street from my work) and quick to boot. The fish is always delicious and fresh and I have never had any complaints (except for the fact that they take credit cards using an iphone device and they have to swipe it several times to get it to work. This always gives me a heart attack though and doesn't say a thing about the quality of food which is fantastic.)

  • Beric D.

The sushi here is better than most trains, but is worse than most restaurants. The nigiri is usually packed with too much rice, and the fish itself has an average thickness with mediocre quality. This is definitely a 'to go' type of place since the seating area is non existent. Calling ahead for your order is recommended.

It was my first time to Mizu and it was truly underwhelming. I've experienced great sushi before so my standards are really high. However, I enjoy the round-about sushi places as much as the next person. Quick, easy sushi is a-ok with me. That being said, I had a spicy tuna roll at Mizu and I won't order it again. It wasn't bad. It didn't smell or taste funky. It was just...well...super underwhelming. The fish was bland. Everything was bland. The flavors weren't well balanced. I might go there again if I'm pressed for time, but I'd rather go somewhere else if I have the time for it.

I don't go out for sushi as much as I'd like to anymore. Many reasons, but most notably: Portland is tragically skint on delicious sushi. And the recent arrival of my daughter has put the kibosh on expensive meals out. I like that I can stop by Mizu and satisfy my hankering for spicy tuna without making it a date night and hiring a babysitter.

I love Mizu! This is a teeny tiny little sushi joint lost in the facade of a tacky, godless building in SW. Seriously, don't blink or you will miss it. I like the expression "good things can come in small packages." And Mizu Sushi is a fine example of why that saying exists. If you happen to find yourself outside of this tiny gem, please go in. I think this place caters mostly to the amazing office workers stuffed in the boonies of the SW downtown office complexes, and they would probably appreciate some other clientele that wasn't so takeout orientated. The gals that own/run/work at this place are all very sweetly efficient because of it though. For those inclined to dine in....The tiny dining area is spotless with stools facing a window so you can check the foot traffic. That's pretty cool, because no one really knows that you are spying on them. Other tings I like: I like that they use biodegradable plastic ware. I like that I get hooked up with extras from time to time. I like that they serve Fresca. I like that I can use a debit card. I like that this exists because getting to the food cart pods and back during lunch has been proven to be a gamble with undesirable results. And although I cannot vouch for the freshness of the the seafood, I do I do I do declare that the cream cheese vegetable Veggie Rolls ($5.95 for 8 and a combo with tasty Miso and Fresca for an additional $2.50) are as fresh as a randy Southern Gentleman on a Sunday afternoon in Springtime. How can I possibly say any more?

3.5 stars from me. I went for happy hour... it was totally fine. I spent $30 bucks (on two people... no booze). The sushi was good, the miso was great, and the thai iced tea was delicious. I would for sure go back to this spot. I really liked the sweet potato roll.

Didn't have much time for lunch since I was swamped with deadlines for the day, so I rushed to this nearby sushi joint. On first glance, place looked sketchy and unappealing. It's a teeny tiny sushi joint with tacky interior decorations. I ordered their daily special - 4 spicy tuna rolls, 4 california rolls, and 4 potstickers (potstickers with sushi?!) - and it turned out decent. It's not hard to mess up california or spicy tuna rolls since they're generic. Gave this place 3 stars cause the owner's really friendly, and the packaging is efficient for busy work people like myself. Grab and go's the mentality. Overall, Mizu's an average eat... I'd probably go again!

The most difficult thing about this great little sushi place is finding it - if you blink while you walk by you will miss it. Try not to blink - they make great sushi. The place is the size of a closet, but a nice closet, without any seating inside - this is strictly to go, although they did have some tables outside. A buddy and I were at a conference at the Marriot Waterfront a couple of blocks away and had Mizu Sushi for lunch. Both of of decided it was one of the best two or three sushi places we'd experienced. No, eating sushi on a plastic tray isn't the most glamorous way I've had it, but the flavors were wonderful. I had a tuna and salmon roll and my friend had the eel - both were terrific. The service was great, as well. They encouraged my friend to try a special sauce for the eel and set him up nicely. I highly recommend Mizu.

When it comes to sushi, there's not a lot of in-between. I find it's either ecstatically good or veering into gross. It all seems to hinge on the quality and freshness of fish that goes into it. The first time I stopped at Mizu Sushi I was in a hurry and coming back from a late appointment so I grabbed a boxed roll from their refrigerator and took it back to the office. it was decidedly blah. The rice was going gummy and the fish was tasteless. But I didn't rush to judgment because it was pre-made and it was 2 in the afternoon. Today we went back for fresh-ordered rolls to go. My office mate got the Philadelphia roll and it was as tasty as you'd expect cream cheese and lox to be. I had some tuna nigiri which was a little thin on the fish, but also fresh and good. I also got a dragon roll, which has crisp cucumber and eel on the inside, with fresh slices of avocado on the outside. All but the eel was great. But the eel was chewy. That's right: Chewy. Eel. You just don't want those two things in the same phrase. I actually had to give up on masticating the eel skin and pull it out of my mouth. That's pretty much all it takes to ruin a roll for me right there. So...Note to Mizu: pony up the extra dollars for really great eel and/or don't be afraid to toss the borderline bits. Make it great - there's no in-between.

Not great. A diverse selection of off flavors (ginger? Bleach? Sea funk?) In just 2 items, a creamy scallop roll (not creamy) and cucumber salad, which was not properly dressed, missing the difference between cucumber salad and a pile of cucumber slices. Weak wasabi. I'll go a block further next time I want sushi.

This is a hole in the wall place (literally), but don't be discouraged by the facade. I am kicking myself wondering why have I not been here before. A colleague and I went here for lunch as we had a craving for sushi and didn't want to walk to far from our office. Wow, what a pleasant surprise! The rolls are BIG and tasty, the service quick and friendly. A bowl of miso soup, a big roll and drink set me back a mere $9. Do yourself a favor and don't miss out on this gem and give these ladies a chance. My colleague and I are new regulars; very happy to ave found a new lunch place! Thanks for a great meal!
