I've been shopping at Mr. Frank's Market for years, and now that the Hollywood Fred Meyer is being remodeled, I will probably be doing most of my shopping here and at the Alberta St. Co-op for the next year. Some of the good basics to buy here are: spices, tortillas (not refrigerated like at New Seasons, those cretins), legumes, limes, onions, and meat. The meat counter is awesome and the papacito who runs it more than makes up for any surliness you might notice from the other staff. Hamburger is ground to order here, no pink slime or other questionable ingredients. They have dog bones. They make their own chorizo. It is very clean as well. Even though the owner has had a bad day for the last nine years at least, he has been very concerned when I've told him that he's out of things like Jarritos Limon. Also, I like their mural. Don Pancho brings barrio realness to Alberta.

Mercado Don Pancho had a good selection of spices and foods I wouldn't know what to do with, and a decent selection of the drinks and whatnot I did want. This more than made up for the cozy quarters and strange, nearly surly vibe from the cashier. If I actually lived in the area, I would definitely come back and check out some of their other offerings. It smelled great.

Whole family came down with food poisoning after eating their carne asada and chicken fajitas from the carniceria. Beware!

Good selection of mexican grocery items and killer tacos in their taqueria next door, but the checker has serious trust issues and lacks any sort of friendliness. Sometimes I buy something, sometimes I don't. It depends on my mood and whether or not I'm shopping or just walking by and curious to see what's new. The foodstuffs in here are so wondrous it's nice to just think of culinary possibilities and plan for next time. Unfortunately I don't think the word "browse" exists in in the checker's vocabulary or worldview. Is it because I'm a late 30-something white guy? Stop checking my pockets/hands with your eyes and giving me that suspicious look. I'm about to tell the guy what to do with himself.

When I moved to Los Angeles, I was a sheltered little white boy whose idea of Mexican food was dinner at Chi-Chi's. Whilst in the City of Angels, I learned the ropes. One of my favorite activities was heading out to Anaheim for an Angels game and tailgating in the parking lot. Rather than the classic Midwestern Bratwurst, my Angeleno pals taught me the value of good carne asada as a staple of the SoCal tailgate. When we stocked up for our tailgates, we headed to one of our favorite mercados in Inglewood to get really good meat. While a Midwestern boy may not feel entirely at home in such a neighborhood, the need for good grub stifled any cultural awkwardness. When I first moved to PDX, the idea of finding thinly sliced skirt steak was a joke. Then, when I least expected it, Yelp introduced me to my heterosexual life partner: Don Pancho. The Ranchera Preparada at Don Pancho's is hands down the best grilling meat under the sun. At less than $7/lb, you will find no better deal in the city... I promise. If you're cooking out and you really want to impress your friends, you would do well to go to Don Panchos. Hell, there's no excuse... this isn't Inglewood, it's the Alberta Arts District! Don't be scurred; just go!

It is a miracle! The guy at the front counter smiled at me! I still drive across town to get salsa and creama from this place. It completes the rest of my home cooked "fiesta" meals!

A small little market attached to the Taqueria, Mercado Don Pancho always has what we need when cooking up for great Puerto Rican food. It's our one stop shop for our pork and rice dinner we make. We can pick up some achiote, pigeon peas, chops, sofrito, and plantains. Their tomatillos are some of the biggest i've ever seen, and about half the price of the supermarkets. We eat a lot of mexican and puerto rican food in our home, so we're always on the lookout for good deals. They have a small butcher counter, produce, fresh tortillas, and anything you could imagine to go with it. For such a tiny spot, I'm always amazed at their selection. My husband is Puerto Rican, so we get all the good stuff Grandma used to make!

Having lived in a heavily hispanic area for years, we'd all get together and have big cookouts so my taste buds know right from wrong quickly! Don Poncho does a pretty good job of brining back my fond memories of tastey well loved meats! The prepared carne asada is certainly the best in the city by my taste! Get a few lbs, grab some tortillas, onions, limes and cilantro from the produce area and you have the fixins for a great dinner! or in my case dinner and breakfast (killer burritos for breakfast). I have also bought the carne asada spice marinade and just buy the plain carne and do it myself! Really good selection! I go often and will continue to!

Mostly everything I ever had as a kid is available here. I walked in and greeted the cashier en español of course, and she said hi as she was watching Croutching Tiger Hidden Dragon dubbed en español. I went to the back where I was looking for my tripas for the menudo. Back home I can go into any Albertson's and get it, but not so much in Portlandia. I kept getting funny looks when I asked for tripe. Anyhow, they had a nice selection of both of tripas and patas for my menudo and the butcher was a young handsome and very courteous butcher. I went through the store and ended up grabbing a lot more than I needed, like kitschy candles and candies I hadn't had since I was a little girl. This store is jam packed with everything you need if you're cooking all your traditional mexican foods. The best part of leaving with 2 bags of groceries was that I spent under $25.00. While purchasing my goods I had a conversation with the cashier about how difficult it can be to get traditional items and I told her how happy it made me to found this place, because it felt like home.
