I would prefer to have given a 3 1/2 star as a compromise between my wife's experience and mine. We arrived before 5pm as part of a group that eventually counted to 13. The first thing I heard from the bartender was that they didn't have anyone coming in until after five. Really, on a Saturday? We sat for 15 minutes before the apologetic and helpful bartender came in and got us started. Service was excellent and that is the main reason for my 4 star review. My neon burger was ordered cooked "medium" but see the photo, that looks rare. I've ordered the neon burger many times in the past at other McMenamins but this one was lacking in the blue cheese that usually runs down and all over while being eaten. As for the bacon, barely noticeable. Drinks and tater tots were great. However the order of falafel bites server across the table from me looked like mini dark brown brownies and tasted (yes I had two of them) way over cooked and on the edge of being burnt. They were awful and the woman who ordered them didn't eat even half. Again, service was excellent and the atmosphere of this McMenamins is really fun and interesting. But they were under staffed and food was either under cooked or nearly burnt. Will we be back? Yes, but I have hopes of better results out of the kitchen.

Emily, Elliot and the rest of the staff are spectacular. Service was spot on. And they served us with smiles on their faces.

It's a Mcmenamins so the food is just that. I love this location though, it's cute and atmospheric!

Cooks in the back talking about how their immune system has been improved because of the "salmonella water" in the back of the kitchen. Oh and I can't forget the spider on the wall and this place smells like dirty dishes. The lunch was meh, seriously nothing delicious. Servers are cool, but then one of them was talking about how she walked through a spider Web. No wonder there's crumbs everywhere. No thank you

Ordered lunch to go between classes at pcc today and when I got there, they told me it would still be a few minutes and offered me a drink on the house! Not your typical rude mcmenimems service from my experience!Check and food, ranch included and ketchup offered, delivered within 3 minutes of getting my free drink. Thanks guys! I'll be back!

This place was ok. I have been to this one a couple years ago and I enjoyed it. We sat outside, service was ok, and food was good. I want there yesterday and didn't have a good experience. They were having someone play loud organ music, so we decided to sit outside. Nobody came to help us for at least 10 minutes, maybe longer. We saw her taking orders and bussing tables and received no greeting. Someone in our group went to ask about getting service and then someone came to get our order. When we were ready to leave it took a very long time for the person to cash us out. Needless to say, service was lacking. The only plus in this experience was the strawberry mojito was delicious.

Like all the McMenamin's locations this one is original and fun! I like this second best to the Kennedy Elementary School.

Its a mcmenamins, so ya know the deal. Pretty good bar food if you're hungry, a range of beers, and tasty cocktails. I really like the coffee and tea here as well. The location is great for a sit down bite between classes at PCC or with a good book from the Mult Co Library next door. Also, two huge patios provide a nice place to act like a lizard this summer. The building is beautiful and historic - with a pipe organ and everything! But the wonderful thing about this particular location is the service. The servers here always seem gracious and kind, to me (in contrast to previous reviews), but I'm not a total douche so I tend to get good service everywhere. But its extra special here. I'm always greeted with a welcoming smile & served with caring efficiency. On the one occasion I had an issue with my food, it was dealt with immediately to my satisfaction. Basically its a low-key, lovely place to chill, study, meet up, or have an event (the free private room holds about 30).

Cool bartender and really good looking location on the inside. I had a timber dog to eat that was awesome and scoobie snacks as an appetizer. (Mini corn dogs). I love eating hot dogs before my hot dogs!

So, one Friday night after catching a comedy show my husband and I, along with another couple, decided to stop at this location to get some drinks. The waiter took forever to acknowledge us (we seated ourselves because we saw no one) and when he did I asked about one of the beverages. He responded "I don't know, I don't try all of the drinks" in what I would call a snarky attitude. I told him I needed a minute to decide and my husband ordered a beer. Several minutes later our server returned and informed us he would not be serving us because it was "clear that we had been drinking too much already." We thought he was joking. Not one of us had had one drink that night! I mean, NOT. ONE. DRINK. Stone cold sober. So, we had to leave. You may not believe that we were not being loud or obnoxious, but I swear it's true. Here's the good news: I contacted management the next day and received an apology as well as a gift card good to any McMenamin's. So, well done for upper management having some customer service skills!

I will not be returning to this McMenamins. I have been here a handful of times and today took the cake. Our wonderful server managed to take our order and get us our initial drinks and everything was well. When the food came our server went away to let us eat. However, our order was wrong. (No big deal, stuff happens). So we try and find our server to let her know the order was wrong and to get it fixed. We did not see our server for another 45 minutes, by which time our drinks had been empty for 20 minutes, the food was cold and we were running out of patience. Our server finally returned and apologized profusely about the order and we told her carefully what the order was supposed to be (plain burger, with just cheese and bacon) went to get us a fresh meal, we still had not received any refills on our drinks. About 5 minutes later the server returns and puts the plate down in front of us. Wrong again. At this point we had been waiting for food well over an hour and she said she would just take the burger off our bill. She drops off the check 5 minutes later. Guess I'm not going to get any food here? After 75 minutes we got our check for two drinks and we went up to another waitress to pay, so we wouldn't have to wait for ours any longer. I left hungry, thirsty, and lost an hour of my life. Will never return. 0/10

I don't understand why I continue to go to McMenamin's pubs or restaurants. In our waitress' defense, she was a great one but there was a lack of communication in the kitchen that she couldn't really have helped. We ordered our apps (took about 20 mins) and then she came to tell us 45 mins later that she was out of clam chowder that everybody ordered. Our food came out after a LONG time but it was burning hot (leading us to believe that it was literally just cooked or sitting under a heat lamp forever) Service, good...surprisingly. Food, horrible...building, even creepier. just don't go.

How have I ever skipped penning this review? I was a resident, living in Piedmont when the Chapel of the Chimes was converted into another brilliant McMenamins endeavor. Like the interior much.... the features preserved and accentuated, fun to roam and enjoy. The outdoor garden, a treat. Enter from two sides in. Coming to the Hotel Oregon location in McMinnville has spawned my interest to check whether I ever reviewed my erstwhile neighboring McM joint. Same food.. never terrible. never great. always sits midle-of-road for me. The charm is in the buildings! Oh.. and the happy hour prices/food to

A decent and very filling burger and fries. It may not be that much better than a lot of other burgers, but the atmosphere makes for a special vibe. Three stars: suggested if you're looking for a good bite in the area. I'll go back based on reliability of service, consistency of dishes and convenience of location.

Love the character of this little pub. It's not as loud as the other McMenamins locations I've been to, it was a bit smaller and more intimate. That could've been due to the time that I visited but we enjoyed our experience. Typical McMenamins pub food-I always love their fish and chips and order it each time I'm in one of their locations. The service was spectacular and couldn't have asked for better. Our server/bartender was really accomodating and made us feel welcome. Try the "rubberhead", mix of the Ruby and Hammerhead. Not quite as delicious as the Ruby but a different taste if the Ruby is too "fruity" for you.

My wife and I have been fans of Mcmennamins pubs for years, but last week had our first poor experience at the Chapel Pub. When we first walked in, there was a strong musty odor which almost caused us to leave, but I wanted one of their signature "hammerhead" beers so we stayed anyway hoping our noses would get used to the smell after a little alcohol. My wife wanted another beer that "they were out of", so she picked the Hammerhead also. She then ordered fish and chips with the African Peanut soup which the server claimed to be excellent. He soon came back to tell her they were "out of the soup" also. I got the burger, and both of our meals were good quality. For dessert, we ordered the chocolate cheesecake. Guess what? The server came back to tell us they were out of that too! The place was not busy, so you'd think the staff would know in advance what they do and do not have available on the menu. At this point my wife needed to use the restroom only to find that someone had thrown up in the bathroom, which we informed 3 of the staff at the bar all standing around talking with each other and doing nothing. The only reason this got 2 stars was because the beer, fish, and burger was good, but we will never go back to this pub again!

Great building with some historic character. Went for happy hour, and had a great pitcher of hoppy IPA, some famous cajun tots, and a cheeseburger. Quick, friendly service, and tasty food in a cozy old chapel.

In a nutshell, skip it. I'm new to Portland and have heard all about McMenamins, so when friends from out of town wanted to try it, I was game (plus it's walking distance from my apartment). We went at 7:00 on a Friday night and the place was empty (not a good sign), with only a bartender in sight. A waitress was present but sitting on one of the patios smoking (turns out she was a manager). She was rude and unconcerned when we (and another couple with an eight-week-old baby) complained about people smoking. We were told that only tables within 10 feet of windows are non-smoking (clearly they don't understand the laws of physics -- smoke wafts, duh.) I will give props to the bartender who was also our waiter. He was very pleasant and attentive. The food was decent and the building is very cool. But beyond that there's nothing special about what is essentially a chain restaurant that caters to the tourist set. Luckily, Portland offers innumerable other options so I won't be visiting this or any other McMenamins again.

Still like it, but stunningly understaffed at times. We walked out tonight after 20 minutes, only one waiter/bartender who we never actually saw. Poor management.

Another typical McMenamins, in that most McMenamins are typically good-to-go I stopped in here to kill a couple hours, and it felt like home. This place has the traditional "balls to the walls" decor that makes you feel completely immersed in the concept. The staff was great. There were very few people in the place, so the staff was free with their time to chit-chat and make me feel welcome. The prices were typical of a McMenns, but it's worth it for that Terminator Stout. I'm sure I'll be spending lots of time here next semester.

Your typical McMenamins food/service. Family was here from California and wanted to experience something you can only get in Portland. We suggested McMenamins and then wished we hadn't talked it up so much because our family was very underwhelmed. Chapel Pub smelled old and musty and did not have the cool interior decorations and atmosphere that most of the McMenamins are famous for. The food wasn't bad, but we all kind of expected more. No one was impressed.

  • Kayla W.

The server Jordan forgot to ring something up after we had paid and left, so she chased us down in the parking lot and made us go back in and pay for what she forgot. After we tipped her 50%. Talk about terrible customer service. Not going back. And on top of their overpriced food that doesn't taste any better than mediocre bar food. Yep. Done with this place.

  • Ginger S.

Mediocre burger. McMenamins has gone down hill. The bun tasted like it was from Franz bakery and for $10 I expect more. Service was good, however. There's a much better burger to be had at the Radio Room on Alberta just a couple miles away.

Not great. Other McMenamins are better. Their menu is very limited, and my monte cristo sandwich was cold. :/ I do like their sweet potato fries. Not all locations have them.

Excellent service here from a gracious gal who seemed genuinely happy to be at work! More hot tater tots than two people could finish, plus a kids menu for the little guys.

Where should I start? This McMenamis restaurant is my favorite out of all of them, because it used to be a funeral home (up until quite recently, I might add.) The food here is DELICIOUS, and they have a great beer selection. I always order one of the garden burgers (Last time it was the "Grateful Veg" garden burger, with a tall glass of their "purple haze" beer. It was all delicious.) The trick to eating at this McMenamins (Just like with all of the others...), is to go when the restaurant isn't completely overwhelmed with customers. Even though the food is amazing, the real reason I continue to return is the atmosphere. The place is dimly lit, air conditioned, and somewhat creepy; all the while, being cozy and welcoming... (Well, as welcoming as a former funeral home can be, haha.) But joking aside, this place is right up my alley. I love the "creepy" factor of eating in a former parlor; and the chapel pub has turned into the #1 place I bring my friends when they come to visit Portland. **Oh, and I've also never had any problems with the service, so I'm not sure why that's one of the main complaints on here. All of the waiters have always been friendly and helpful.

This McMenamins has an awesome interior. It is dark and filled with wood. It has a very 'pub' feel to it, which I love. I live nearby, so I have eaten here many times. Unfortunately, I have always had bad service. The pub is never crowded when I am there, but the waist staff will take 10 minutes to bring you a menu and then 10 more minutes to bring water to the table. If you want a drink refill, I suggest you just walk up to the bar and order. But order the refill when you still have half a drink left, because it will also take forever to arrive. Amazingly, once the food is ordered, it arrives very quickly. I have never been disappointed by the quality of the food. But the service can really overshadow all the positives. I haven't been to other McMenamins, so I don't know if this is a trend or unique to the Chapel Pub. My suggestion would be to sit at the bar and don't be afraid to speak up if you are not being attended to promptly. And try the tater tots.

We came in while brewery hopping on a Sunday and there was only about 4 other people in the place. When you walk in, you get hit with this aroma of a wood stove burning which made it feel very cozy and inviting. I was impressed the bartender knew the proper way to make an spanish coffee and the beers were good as well. The tater tots fed 3 of us and were tasty.

Was here with colleagues from 3:30-6:00 pm on a Friday. Our waiter was extremely attentive and sweet. We enjoyed the happy hour food and drinks. I'd definitely return.

I moved to the neighborhood a while ago, and when I didn't have wifi and needed to get some work done, I went to the Chapel Pub as a default, knowing they are open a little later than some coffee places and also, a beer. I went there a handful of times and each one was horrible. I don't even know why I went back. Once, I just was doing some reading for school, and wanted to enjoy a burger. I know McButtimans is not known for their rockin' food, but I was hungry and ready to settle. It came out cold. Coldy cold. The fries too. My server did not even come back to check on me for about 15 minutes (with a very empty Tuesday afternoon restaurant). I waited and seethed quietly, and asked for a replacement meal. She helped me out, ignored me for the rest of my stay there, and once her shift was up she kinda elbowed me out and hurried me to leave an undeserved tip and run. I did. The next couple times I was there, my burgers were luke warm. My server this time was much more attentive-probably because I seated myself in the bar area, where the servers will pick up drinks and slack off. I told her my burger was pretty cold, not hot and steamy like meat in bread should be! She told me it was cold because I put ketchup on it. I stared her down and asked for a new burger. After that exchange, the server I had on my first visit, was apparently getting off of her shift, and had many shots with some friends that just came in. I eavesdropped, and laughed to myself. I like seeing people have a good time. It makes me have a good time, too. But I was working on some research and wanted to be left be for a while. A few shots later, I guess the server was drunk enough to come bother me at my booth, tell me I was pretty or something slurred to that effect, and try to hold my hand and squeeze it repeatedly. It was uncomfortable and bizarre, but I tried to laugh it off and concentrated on what I was doing. Girl, if you're going to try to hit on other ladies, do it where you don't work, and don't do it so drunkenly. Just a tip. *Note* I work in foodservice, and have for many years. I have a lot of empathy for servers, bussers, barkeeps, baristas, and tip as well as I can afford in most places I go, even on my meager wages. I believe in fat tips. This place is the only place I have sent food back. Ever. I felt like an asshole. But I'm not paying stupid prices for cold food and servers that make you feel dumb for saying something instead of, "Oops, okay. Here's a new burger." It's that easy. I will not come back here-it is just not worth my time. I will actually, and have, told people to not go there. Burn in Hell, Chapel Pub!

Nice cozy oasis. I stepped out of the rain and into Chapel pub where it was warm and the beer was cold. Had a pint of the Ruby red. The service was excellent and the food smelled very good.

Nothing SUPER spectacular about this version of McMenamin's. I DO like the layout as its interesting. The decor, the feel, the vibe is all McMenamin's and thus you feel instantly comfortable and confident about what you are about to recieve in terms of service and food (good or bad is up to you). I was a little perplexed when my burger came out slightly after someone at the same table who ordered after me and the waitress didn't catch it...but par for the course for McMenamin's service right?

This was my first visit to a McMeniman's pub - this one being the Chapel Pub on N Killingsworth St in Portland, Oregon. I went on a Sunday and was surprised to find out that we were there during happy hour (happy hour on a Sunday...at 5 PM?!) Nevertheless, the menu was full of specials - of which one of the people in my party ordered the cheeseburger and Cajun tots. I sampled the Cajun tots, and they were decent - a little over seasoned. The beers on the happy hour menu were not as well priced as the food. $2.25 for a pint of PBR seems a little steep. The McMeniman's beers were a little better priced however. I decided to forgo the happy hour menu and go with the Communication Breakdown Burger. It was cooked well (I asked for medium) but the presentation was a little sloppy. It was difficult to finish my burger without dripping grease over my lap and spill peppers and mushrooms all over my hands. The fries were very good. I admit, I am not a fan of crispy French fries, but for someone who enjoys that extra crunch, these fries are for you! For dessert, I had a black and tan brownie. This was incredibly delicious and the ice cream was amazing. The best part was the tan (blondie) part of the brownie, which was gooey and very sweet. For service, our waitress was not very hospitable. She was very intent on getting her job done, but was very unpersonable (that is...until the very end, when tip was a motivator!) Overall, it was a mediocre experience. The food was decent, but the service was just OK.

It's a Mcmenamins please.. they are everywhere and the food always tastes the same.. The reason to come here is the ambiance tho. I love the patio here.

By now, I think we all know what to expect from a McMenamin's. Chapel Pub falls right into that line. Comforting in its different-yet-the-sameness, it did have a few extra specials that we hadn't seen at other McM's. This one gets extra props for the chutzpah of building a restaurant where embalming once took place.

I'd never heard of McMennamin's before this recent trip to Portland, but I was introduced to the restaurants by a friend who wanted me to have the full "Portland" experience. The idea of turning churches, schools, etc, into restaurants is so fun, and I love that each location is completely different. We ended up at Chapel Pub, which, duh, had once been a chapel. I ordered the Ruby Ale, which had a slight raspberry flavor to it. I did really like it, but for some reason, I thought it would be more fruity... I think I was expecting a cider or something. For dinner I got the Blacksmith Steak Sandwich, minus tomato, plus fries. It was tasty, inexpensive, and just the right size (not too big or too small). The beer shakes sounded really interesting, but we were planning to head over to Voodoo Doughnuts, so I figured that would be enough of a sugar high. The coolest thing happened at this place... I got CARDED! I'm not OLD (30-something), but I'm old enough to be way past the stage of getting carded. It definitely made me feel good... maybe my crows' feet were on vacation. :) I'm going to say 3 stars for the food by itself, but 4 for the total experience (location, price, beer, etc).

There's no doubt that this location is extremely aesthetically pleasing, even to those who are not religious. However, this seemed to be the most desolate of the 4 McMenamin locations I visited during my Portland stay. Fortunately, it also had the cheapest drinks. It's a really beautiful structure, both inside and out. Vaulted wood ceilings, stain-glass windows, large solid wooden doors...amazing. And there's plenty of rooms (with fireplaces) to tuck yourself away from rowdy crowds that gather. Kind of romantic to sit and eat in front of the fireplace. That is, until your food comes. I have no complaints about the service, the two guys that waited on me and me lad were super killer, chatty, charming and one was from my hometown. However, the Brothers McMenamin really need to step up their game in gastronomy, they completely have the authority and resources to do so. The menu was really uninspiring and my meatloaf burger (special of the day) wasn't bad, but damn was it greasy! And not even the good kind of greasy, like, the bottom bun sitting and soaking in an ungodly amount of grease. Get it? Ungodly...chapel? No good? Anyway... This was my least favorite Brothers McMenamin location, which kind of explains why it was the most empty as well. The brothers are worth a whole lot, but if they were to implement some amazing, young and innovative chefs, they could be worth a whole lot more. Luckily for them, Portland is full of aforementioned chefs.

Another McMenamins sleeper. This place is cool. A restored funeral chapel (okay, the bar's not original). Lot of fun. Beer on tap is always good. Sandwiches were very good. But the ambiance is the catcher.

i usually go to the mcmineman's by lloyd and i had the cheesestake there.. it was BOMB! yesterday i went to the chapel on killingsworth and the food was terrible. i ordered a cheesesteak again thinking that it would be amazing.. it wasn't. the meat was dry and chewy. the bread seemed old, dry and chewy. they gave me 7 tater tots while my friend who got a bacon cheese burger had an over abundance of french fries that he didn't finish because it was too much. although i only had so many tater tots, they were fried well and of course you can't serve a ruby wrong. but gosh.. i was super pissed off about my sandwich and the lack of tater tots. my waitress was super nice, but i had asked them to turn on the fire pit and she said she would ask someone to do it for her because she normally does not operate it.. they never turned it on. oishfu sdhf oiusdhf !!!!!! thinking about it i came here with my boyfriend maybe 4-5 months ago and i think i persauded him to get a cheesesteak too because the time i got it from the lloyd center location was so good. told me it wasn't anything great and how i describe it from lloyd was on two different keels . if i ever come here again.. it might just have to be after 10 where i only get tots and a ruby because i know for a fact the fire pit will be on. other than that SEEEEEEE YA LATER.

I live a block from this place, I really wish that I loved it. Now I know McMenamins establishments aren't known for their food, I think mainly it's about their locations. I adore Bagdad and Kennedy school, but Chapel Pub...I just don't really know what to think. I know it's a church, but it feels like I am eating, but mainly drinking in a church. It actually sort of feels wrong. I think they maybe kept too much of the church elements. I've only been once and it was practically empty. The service was a bit slow, the food was pretty uninspired and you can't really screw up a Bourbon sour, so no complaints there. I see another reviewer played Scrabble around the stove, now that sounds like my scene. I might have to go back in the winter with my travel scrabble and hubby in hand.

Completely agree with: EXTREMELY BAD SLOW SERVICE, they are friendly, like friendly to hang out with or chat. If they were present! This is a eve at mcmenamins: Sit down, wait, wait wait. Waitress comes over, asks if you want something to drink (well duh lady!) You order drink. Wait wait wait. Get your drink, & you better be ready to order food! Cause if you don't, you may not see them again. You order food, wait wait wait. Some sweaty, out of breath, must be on cocaine guy delivers it- and rushes off so quickly you cannot ask for anything else. Beer is empty. Wait wait wait. By the time you are done eating, you still haven't gotten a refill drink or water, or the condiment you may have wanted. Still haven't gotten check. Wait wait wait. I can say this with the utmost certainty because yes, I keep going back. Why? I don't know. Convienient and reliable! It will never change, menu is always the same, beer is always the same, and it is always the same horrible waitstaff! At least I know what to expect So- service sucks. But they are friendly sometimes! Beer- mcmenamins beer, overrated but not bad. Drinks- hit or miss. Food- mediocre- but reliable! Burgers, an array. Not the best, not the worst. And yes, I keep going back ha ha

I've been here a few times, and they were memorable times, which makes all the difference. One of my most relaxing winter evenings out was here, drinking hot toddies around the potbellied stove, playing scrabble with my honey. Something was in the air. Did McMenamin's have much to do with that? Well, they facilitated my positive experience. Another time, we attempted a late meal at a new restaurant that shall remain unnamed (because they later greatly redeemed themselves). We were told that food wouldn't be served, as it was 10 pm, and while we drank on empty stomachs, we watched the whole staff emerge from the kitchen and proceed to feast on amazing dishes at the bar. Needless to say, we left dissatisfied, and we found ourselves back at Chapel Pub in front of amazing Captain Neon burgers. Again, circumstances made this scenario, but Chapel Pub came through for us. The McMenamin's phenomenon is fascinating to me. I agree with the Michelle H. about keeping expectations low and knowing what you're going to get. But maybe there's some part of us that doesn't want fantastic service or adventurous cuisine... I think I want these things, but when I find myself at a McMenamin's, it makes me wonder.

3rd strike, you're out. I live close enough to be a regular, but I'm not. I live close enough to blow off the lackluster experiences, but my oh my I give up. It's always dead when I go in there, and that must be why I'm treated like a roadblock in front of a cigarette break. Do yourself a favor and keep heading on down the street to the white eagle. They serve the same Ruby ale and serve with a smile.

We booked the private room at the Chapel Pub for a birthday celebration. We needed a space that could hold 25-30 people, with a closing door. The "conference room" at the Chapel was PERFECT. They were so easy to work with - we did everything via email save one phone call on the day of the party. They let us bring in our own birthday cake and set up our stuff (we had a trivia party) however we wanted. They set us up with pitchers of water and our own server, Casper, who was awesome! I think the coolest thing was that everyone had his/her own check and this wasn't a problem at all. Casper was able to keep everything straight, in spite of having like 12 different parties and a lot of requests! We will definitely have our birthday parties here from now on!

Do you know what I love most about McMenamins? It doesn't matter where you go, which fabulous piece of architecture you visit*, you always know what you're going to get. You know you're going to get horribly slow service; it's a given. The food is consistently typical. The pints are reasonably priced. You keep your expectations low. It's what any smart person would do, and on the off chance you get something out of this world? You're bound to be pleasantly surprised. Regardless, it's usually a safe choice. Dining in a chapel is indeed a unique experience. There is a serenity, a calm, bordering on eerie that just makes it worth it just to come for that. Closing your eyes, you can almost smell the way the chapel used to be, assuming you were chowing down on some Cajun tots while taking a dip in the holy water. I do find it funny though that no one bats an eye about a converted chapel. In the 'Couv, a brewery moved into an old church and everyone went nuts. It didn't last long to say the least. Welcome to suburbia. *Unless it's the silly strip-mall ones. Those suck, but they serve their suburbanite purpose.

Never ever will I go in here again. A friend invited me to join her and with much trepidation and anxiety I did and will never return. The person who commented that no one bats an eyelash in Portland to go into a converted chapel is WRONG. So many people are completely revolted that McMenamin's has turned the Little Chapel of the Chimes into a bar, but they don't all write it on Yelp. THEY DON'T GO. The bar is in the room where the services were held and still looks too much like the old chapel for anyone I know to be truly comfortable in there. Unlike an elementary school, where the memories are often cute and fond, having a bar where many of us recall some of our most tragic memories is not somewhere I can stomach.

Not a bad place to relax and have a beer. Neat building with quite a few beer options. They also squeeze fresh juice for the mixed drinks. The service is rather slow so don't be in a hurry. The food is just ok. The tater tots are the stars of the show. The salad choices are very limited and if you get a protein you may want to ask for it on the side. It made my whole salad oily.

Quick service and great fun at the bar. Emily and Eliot were great and full of smiles. Good beer and great atmosphere.

Fun times!! Our group of ridiculous friends were treated like family here. We were on the NOPO Pub Pedal and the Chapel was one of our stops. We took over the bar, broke out our glow sticks (we were 'those' people glowing down the street!), the wait staff wanted some and next thing you know, they're taking pics with us and being just as ridiculous as we were. Good stuff!! Plus the food and drinks were fabulous! Yay!!! :)

There's George Fox University's Chapel, and then there's McMenamin's Chapel. Do I even have to announce which one is better? I love the waitress whose served me every time I've been in there studying with my chemistry peeps. The food is all the same, but I love the pita and hummus during happy hour yum yum.

We waited for almost an hour for our cold food to be delivered. Haven't ever had such poor service and cold food before! Also had a dirty knife and a small teaspoon to eat the clam chowder! Such a disappointment!

McMenamins Chapel Pub patio is the perfect place to be on a warm spring evening. Our server, Jordan, provided lovely service--she even built us a fire!

Sat ouside on a nice day, it was great the server was nice and we redeem our free appetizers from our passports. The food and beer was thr same as you get at all the other McMenamins in the area.

we've been here several times, and enjoy biking to something close with great beer, and tasty food. the ambiance is always a plus. we started with a pint of ruby, and a porter. both were thirst quenching. next we had the hammerhead garden burger with a salad, and the grateful veg hemp burger with a salad. we know what to expect, and the chapel pub met with our expectations. the server was friendly and effiecient.

Very unique building as are most of the McMenamins locations (minus the strip mall locations). Great artwork and painting as well. We have stopped in here a few times since completing our passports when we have been in the area. The menu has some great sandwiches that we are not privy to in Salem along with some other creative cocktails. Def worth the stop.

My head is still spinning a little bit from the fact that I went to a McMenamins and actually got really good service. Yes, that's right, you just heard the words "really good service" and "McMenamins" in the very same sentence. Whoa. Went to the Chapel Pub on a really hot day and the AC was blasting and it was the perfect escape from the sun for a bit. We just had beer and nachos, which were good. I love the McMenamins concept but don't love the fact that every time I go I have to weigh whether the cool setting of whichever place I go will be worth the wait and the poor service. Not so this time at the Chapel Pub! We sat in the bar area and the bartender served our table. He was friendly and efficient and acted as though he was glad to have us there. Sweet.

It's McMenamin's and I like McMenamins. The location is great and close to our house. The decor is really fun and creative like many of the locations. The servers are a pretty mellow crew, not to much drama when I have been there. There are a couple great tables next to the fire place which makes for a quiet cozy spot. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is because ultimately I want to save those for exceptional small local business who kick ass.

Come when you have some time, not when you're in a hurry before class. Sit out in the open, not in one of those creepy hidden booths. What are you, a stalker? Get a beer, buy a round. Treat your servers kindly, because they are sassy, pretty, witty lasses and hearty, happy, hunks. and come on, order more than a boring burger. You're worth it.

Ahh Mcmenimans. I love Edgefield. I love The grand lodge. Kennedy school. But this was the first mcmenimans I was really disappointed at. They have the same beer the same pretentious servers and food. But whatever you do do not go see a movie here. I went and saw some movie for 3 dollars and literally had to sit with my hands over my ears for the entire show. The movie was so loud you could not understand what the actors were saying. Go ahead ask me what the movie was about.... I dont know because I couldn't understand a goddam word they said. Plus there was some sort of service door right by the screen that some employee kept walking in and out of. 3 dollars is not worth it.

This is a McMenamin's without charm. Unlike some of the McMenamin's in which they accentuate the history of the place, here they've just put in the signature furniture and menu and called it good. Really the only appeal to this particular McMenamin's is the outdoor seating in the summer.

Normally I don't give 5 stars to McMenamin's outlets, but this one is my favorite so far. The food is always bland, but at least there are different offerings here. I recommend sitting in the fireplace room. So toasty and comfortable.

The Chapel Pub: I love this place. For a long time, however, The Chapel was just another McMenamin's to me; a place where you can grab a Ruby Ale, some Cajun tots, and sit for hours on end writing paper after paper. There had been nothing of note, other than the fact that it's a beautiful building that use to be a funeral parlor (yes...chapel AND funeral parlor). I went in on a Thursday with some family and out of town visitors, thinking it would be the same as always, and was pleasantly surprised. Little did I know, they'd stepped it up a bit and added a unique, location-specific touch to their menu. Some delicious dips and great salads can finally compliment my beer and tots! The food has always been well prepared (minus the hummus incident of 2010 in which my hummus was weirdly lumpy and cold) and I never seem to run out of iced tea. I've never had bad service at this location; however, the secret is to sit in a place where they can see you. "Out of sight, out of mind" applies to patronage situations too. The servers aren't designed in a way to be sicky-sweet nice, but they are chatty and interesting people. It never hurts to compliment a server or be friendly first and you'd be amazed what can happen when you tell someone that their frames rock or that you love his or her tattoos. But, on Thursday, just when I thought the pleasant surprises were over, a dude walks up to our booth and says, "Hey, I'm the Thursday organist. I play from requests and here's the list of songs and some sticky notes. If you want to make a request, write it down and come slap it on the organ." I may have squealed out loud from this, because I'm a music nerd and so was everyone else at the table. The list was all the classic tunes you'd want in a jukebox: Journey, Queen, Beatles, 80s, 90s, Brittney Spears (don't judge until you hear it rock organ style), and Wham! Honestly, I've never heard "Wake Me Up Before You Go, Go" sound as great as it did on that old church organ. He also rocked us some "Star Trek Theme Song" while my sister and I (loudly) spoke the opening lines ("Space....the final frontier....") and then sang, horribly (on purpose) the rest of the tune. But nothing was quite as lovely as hearing "Bohemian Rhapsody" end with the most wicked awesome chime note in place of where the gong should be. Thankfully, he's there every Thursday, so I can do it all again another day. It's still a McMenamin's, so expect a McMenamin's, but like other good locations, it's got something special and unique. Finally the food reflects that (it's about time) and now that I know there's a rock organist, I'm sold and heading back for more.

I love Portland zoning laws. Chapel Pub and the Florida Room across from Jefferson High School and the North Portland Library. It's fabulous, and so unlike anywhere else I've ever lived. Chapel Pub = place to go when you've got the family in tow and don't feel like waiting an hour to eat at Kennedy School. I've been here about four times now and have never ever had to wait. Even on Valentine's Day, although the place really doesn't scream romantic dinner, does it? Typical pub food, cozy booths and fireplaces, really nice servers, family-friendly, plus it's the typical impressive renovation/revitalization project you expect from McMenamin's. A three-star place really. Fourth star for the keyboardist who plays soft rock on the old mortuary pipe organ on Thursday nights. And the fact that they support the neighborhood schools with benefit nights. That's just cool.

So I don't generally like McMenamins. I am not a huge fan of blah pub food, don't have a thing for beer, and prefer local taste that's a bit more fine tuned, however I have to say my dining experience at the Chapel Pub was THE best I've had at one of these PacNorthwest chairs thus far. We sat by the fire on a cool rainy evening, our server Juan was friendly and helpful. I was with my lover, so we wanted to be left alone, maybe that's the difference, but I thought all in all the staff was very attentive. I also liked the menu. It seemed a bit less ambitious than the Kennedy School which I appreciated. You don't go to McM's for amazing food, you go for the feel of the place, which is what you can always count on. I ordered the Big Veggie Salad which was delish, with just the right amount of dressing, and great veggies. My dining companion ordered the Jamaican bowl and it was really good, nice and hearty and the flavors were actually better than I expected. It wasn't exactly packed for a Saturday night, but for a cozy pub meal, I was satisfied and the play-list was spot on!

Super cute place to get a drink or eat... Went there with the fam right before Christmas. Had no complaints about the service really... (probably because the Portland-ers we were with said, "don't expect much... the service in Portland sucks. It's best not to ask for anything...") Okay, so... based on that assumption -- the service was pretty good. The food was typical bar food... I got a veggie burger that turned out to be pretty good. Really, the stars go for atmosphere. It was just cool to eat AND DRINK(!) inside a renovated chapel... with fireplaces!

Downside: the bloody marys tasted like vinegar and ketchup. So bad they made my friend sick to her stomach. The menu is slight and uninspired. The sandwich was dry, bland and barely holding together. The staff was dependably rude. Water glasses the size of thimbles. The soup of the day was gone at 2pm and the back up side was 7 tater tots (that I'm guessing they count). Meh coffee. The table next to us lamented that they just wanted to pay and escape. Someone had to run to the bar to get the staff's attention. The culinary experience was half the quality of Subway but three times the bill. Did I mention the bloody marys tasted like vinegar and ketchup? Upside: pretty interior. Too bad it's wasted on a horrible restaurant.

There are certain appeals to a Mcmenamins that not many other pubs can pull off. This one in particular: 1. good, reliable beer. It may not be the best, but it'll get you drunk good. 2. decent greasy food everyone needs after a night of drinking. 3. cool renovated building. 5. strange waitresses who lose your money/credit card or forget to bring you a check... but they are still nice enough to warrant tipping. 4. your friend can throw up in the parking lot after drinking far too much, and yet you aren't too ashamed to show your face there.

The food here is standard McMenamins, but the service is always lacking. There's something about the layout where there are too many nooks and crannies for booths that make customers invisible to waitstaff. I go here pretty regularly, and am pretty much always neglected by whoever is working. It takes way too long to order, get a refill, the check, etc.

Is there less then one star I could apply here? I don't know why I have to remind myself every couple of years why any McMens is just plain awful. Okay, they have really neato keen art and we should all give our thanks to the mcmen empire for salvaging all of the historical buildings in the area, but man their food has gone from merely adequate to just plain sucks. (I'll blame this on my wife) On a weakened moment of common sense I agreed to take my father out to the Chapel Pub for F-Day. Dad's a pretty easy guy to be around and figured he'd enjoy this place. Man was I wrong. Where do they find their staff? My wife ordered a standard Martini and we got this blank stare as if we'd asked for a Sasquatch, I guess he figured it out and acted as if he should be commended for pulling it off. Dude, it's a friggin Martini, read the book! Their beer is never anything special and they failed to change my opinion here. IPA was adequate, though I would feel raped if I wasn't getting their swill during happy hour $4.50 for a pint of their stuff is just not worth it. But now the food, OMG, the food. Fish and Chips my parents got to split was a flat out embarrassment. I cannot believe they thought it appropriate to put that in front of us with a straight face. While I couldn't expect a large portion of fish given the cost of fish now-a-days, the fries were cold and limp, we couldn't tell what frying process the fish had gone through to get to the state that it had become, the salads were overly drenched in some sort of unidentifiable dressing, limp and room temperature. Hammerhead was better then the IPA (TG!, Still glad it was happy hour). Okay, my sandwich, though not memorable, wasn't as bad as everything else. Guess I was lucky. But what damage could one do to a chicken sandwich anyway? Maybe I'll experience that disaster when I let my guard down again in another 2 years. But hey, nice ambiance.

What's not to like? Good beer, good pub food, and the feeling that you're alive in a place that once handled the dead. This is McMenamin's at its most melow and service was unremarkable which I think is a good thing. (Though I just remembered, we once went in and asked if someone was going to stoke up the fire so we could sit by it. Cutting to the chase, they might need some fire starting training courses.)

Another McMenamin's joint, which means you have to in the mood for the McMenxperience. I often am, because I appreciate their establishments' antique wood accents, robust booths, old-time-hipster playlist (not too loud) and fine beer. Chapel Pub is a particularly lovely renovation of a neighborhood church. They retain some of the 50's flavor of the original building, throw in a few wood stoves, and soft lighting. But most importantly, BOOTHS. Lots and lots. Comfy and intimate. Great for hiding and writing. Worth the drive, and if they have it, order a cream ale whilst typing away.

i rate it highly because i have only gone here to drink, and i have sat at the bar, and the bartenders were good to me. had i been looking for food, or waiter service, i probably would have come away with a 2-star experience, because, let's face it, it's a mcmenamins. this one, however, does have a catch: there's an organ built-in! and they had the decemberists girl playing it one evening when i went. free show from an awesome musician, in a former-chapel/funeralhome-turned pub? ok, 3 stars and solid.

I come here frequently because it's where my knitting group meets. I have seen a lot of changes over the years, some good, some bad. First, there are gluten free options. They can make a decent bun-less burger if you want low carb, and they have a GF bun as well. I was really disappointed when they took the bowls off the menu, because that used to be my go-to. I hope they bring them back! The service is hit or miss. The veterans are AWESOME and have always treated our group very well. Sometimes we get someone who seems a bit newer and has trouble with the big table. The ladies can be finicky, but I try to give anyone a break who deals with us knitting all evening. The space is cool and people seem really into the organ. It's the kind of place I would bring my parents when they visit from out of town.

I am a tripster. This is not my favorite McMenamins, but is it close to home. The service is generally pretty darn good because this place is never that busy. The food is McMenamins general menu. We did show up with a group of about a dozen people and took over the bar. The tenders where fantastic, patient and super friendly. We ended up having a super great time. The outside seating area is nice - and dog friendly. This location is kinda odd, until recently it was funeral home and some of the local neighbors had their loved ones memorials and funerals here. Maybe that is why it is not that busy...

We've been to Chapel Pub a few times in the past and it's super cute. Probably the slowest or most quiet of all the McMenamins we've been to but sometimes that is kind of nice. We seem to always eat and drink out on the patio which is nice. Stopped for a beer and snack a few days ago and hubby had the pretzel which he liked. I had the hummus plate, happy hour size and the hummus was tasteless so I added salt. Think they forgot the cumin, the garlic, etc. It's ok, we'll still go back. It's McMenamins for gosh sakes. The beer was nice and it's a great little stop over when we are playing tourist for the day.

Came here with a large party of people and only had one waitress, but she was great and quick. The food wasn't anything to brag about. We came during happy hour and only ordered happy hour food and drinks. I got the hard black-cherry cider (which was really good), a mini burger, and tots. Not bad but they mostly taste like bar food. The ambiance here is like a old chapel, dark and haunted feeling. Overall, I will probably come again (only during happy hour) because prices are good and service was efficient.

Ooef. This is a beautiful building but the service was ridiculous. There were less than 15 tables and one large party and we waited over 40 minutes for food. The bartender and the waiter were not to be bothered and very nonchalant when we asked to cancel our order. We left without receiving our food and will not be back again. At least I got the stamp.

11 of my fellow school mates went here last Sunday after class & we all sat down outside & ordered happy hour food & a beer. We were told we couldn't order 2 beers at a time from the server/ bartender, so 3 of us got up & went inside to the bar to order 1 before our food & original beer came outside. We soon found out that our server was the bartender and was confused about us wanting to order a beer "off the original outside tab" and started giving us attitude & acting like he hated his job... Maybe he was mad that we were trying to get happy hour prices since cut off was in 10 min. Of trying to order a beer from the bar I don't know.. Needless to say, he continued to show attitude and disgust at us 3 so I asked him to calm his fucking attitude " in those same words" and he snapped back by saying that beer was on the house & he was canceling my order while walking away. Great! I didn't want to come to this establishment in the 1st place so I walked across the street to get actual SERVICE. Soooooo..... My 10 classmates were sitting outside not knowing what went on inside & waiting for their food & beer for over 45 min. I heard one of them went in to ask what was taking so long & he said, "your whole order was cancelled" Who would do that!!??? Thee most horrible service I've ever had & would not recommend this location 100 thumbs down plus some

This McMenamins is located in a former wedding chapel and funeral home. The transformation into a bar/restaurant was done well and there are lots of nooks and crannies to find yourself tucked into. Their Black Widow Porter was the crowd favorite and at $11/pitcher - our family from Hawaii was very impressed with the value offered by the food and drinks. The food itself is standard McMenamin's fair with burgers, sandwiches, fries, and tots - the cajun tots are the best with ranch. Yummm! Service can be spotty but no bad attitudes, so that's nice.

This is by far my favorite McMenamins to go to! We always get seated IMMEDIATELY and get great service. If the one on the Columbia has a wait we drive over here and are done eating by the time we would get seated at the other. It's wonderful!

With all the hipster trash and flotsam that frequents this area, I'm glad Chapel is still around. It's a McMenamins. It's not a Pearl location brewery. Do you need a quick bite and beer? This is your place. Do you have a giant group of people that need to convene in one location, without calling ahead first? This is not your place (and also rude). You know what you're getting into when you go to a McMenamins. For better or for worse.

  • Chris E.

Another good McMenamins experience. I bought my first bottle of McMenamins Cabernet, the Queen Anne sandwich was good, and the clam chowder as well. Kayla, our server was pleasant, attentive, personal and knowledgable. The only reason I'm Giving 4 stars is because I asked for cajun fries and ranch, and when I didn't receive them, I brought them to our servers attention, and literally all they did was over season the same fries I got with the cajun spices, no new ranch. It's was so laughable I couldn't even be mad, and Kayla WAS super personable and sweet. One more stamp down, plenty more to go :)
